Basically the title. Almost every single time i move ANY file or delete any file, the window im in freezes and the progress bar freezes. Now when i create a new folder the window im in freezes also, but i'd say its only 50% of the time. The temporary solution i found was to go to the task bar, end explorer, and restart it using run. Now when i check back on that folder, whatever action I did (ie delete file) does do what i wanted, its just the freezing. I'm looking for a permanent solution to this and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

A:Create New folder, move file, delete file. Explorer Freeze

Hi erod49, try looking in your error logs. You have given a good discription of the problem. Tel us your system specs as well.

To get into your error logs,

Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Other things to look for are updates, has an update caused this. Has your computer autoupdated any of the motherboard drivers.
Have you tried to restore the computer before the error started or has it always been like that.

It's definitely not a virus. Also no bad sectors or anything like that.
I tried deleting it in safe mode. Didn't work.
Any ideas?

Good Day!

I downloaded a video file from Youtube using IDM. It was downloqded successfully and then I moved the file to a different file location. After that, I opened the file and then my laptop lagged. Then I decided to delete the file. Unfortunately, I can't delete it. And then, Windows Explorer gives me a hard time after I moved that file. Every start up, it will just respond once and when I tried to click something (ex. My Document) It will just load and then not respond. If I close then reopen, I just a Window without anything in it. So I can't open a file anymore. Then, the Perormance Monitor shows 100% CPU usage everytime I open Windows Explorer.
Other installed application like Nero are still usable so I can open a file there. I tried to delete files and then it worked but that video file I downloaded, I still can't delete. It will just show "Recycling (2.3MB) 0 bytes/sec" (something like that) then will not respond.
I assumed that if I was able to delete that file, maybe everything will be Ok again.
So, please help me.
I'm not good in explaining so I hope you get my problem and help me solve it.

Thank you very much!

That smells like a virus. Scan your system with all the scanners you can put your hand on - especially Malwarebytes - the free version. If you cannot download it normally, try safe mode or download it on another system and put it on a stick. Then run it from the stick - best in safe mode.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here we go.
So, my brother's family has been visiting in the past couple weeks, and my nephew spent pretty much the entire time on my computer. Anyway, he set a couple torrents to download, and now, when I try to delete one of his downloaded files, or access it, or go into the folder where it's located, I get a message saying that windows explorer is experiencing a problem and needs to shut down, or I get something about an exception priviledged instruction, (0xc0000096) occurred in the application at location 0x04350001. Click okay to terminate, or cancel to debug. Cancel doesn't seem to do anything, and I have absolutely no idea what to do.

Um, so, anyway, if anyone has any information or advice, it'd be greatly appreciated, and thank you in advance!

Hi guys.

My Windows 8 laptop has been playing up a bit recently, most notably with the green ribbon of death problem and a couple of other things to do with indexing. I seem to have fixed the issues, but one thing that is still causing a problem is this one file in my Downloads folder. It is a .wav file which was a free (legal) download from soundcloud. When I first downloaded it (September last year), from what I can remember, it worked fine. Somewhere between then and now it seems to have got corrupted or something. I know it is this file causing the problems because not only will the song not play, it crashes Windows Media Player and crashes Windows Explorer when I try to delete it, move it, rename it etc. I've tried deleting it using Shredder, no luck. I have also tried the Unlocker program to attempt to delete it and it crashed that too. All of these things also happened in Safe mode, so no luck with deleting it there. I also tried deleting it with Command Prompt with no luck. I think that file may have been causing the majority, if not all of the problems I was having before. Earlier today I opened Task Manager and kept it as the first window, and then opened Downloads, clicking on each file one by one while monitoring Windows Explorer's CPU usage. For each file it remained low, well under 10% but then AS SOON as I click on the dodgy file it's CPU usage shot up to 50-70% and caused the green ribbon of death to come back above it. Even after closing Down... Read more

After noticing the many hundreds of reported errors of this type I have just got to ask:
Why isn?t there a fix for it?  I figure it started happening after Windows-8 became available, so MicroSoft now has a patch to cause the system to go into a wait state for 30-60 seconds, every nth time you right click the mouse.
So how do you disable it?

This is my first time on the forums, so I hope I don't screw this up. I have searched the forums and not found an answer to this problem, so I hope I'm not re-asking an old question...

I am running Windows Seven Professional 64-bit and Windows Update isn't showing any more possible updates.

My computer is a Dell Precision M90 laptop with a Intel Core2 Duo 2.0GHz processor.

When I use Windows Explorer to open files that are associated with the program SolidWorks I receive the message: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

I am running SolidWorks 2010 Professional SP0 which is a 3D modeling program for mechanical engineering. The program ran under XP without this issue.

I only receive this message if there is not an instance of SolidWorks running. Even after I receive this message, SolidWorks still loads and opens the file I selected through Windows Explorer.

This problem occurs no matter where the file is located (network or local).

This problem doesn't keep me from getting my work accomplished, but it is a bit of nuisance. Any help that anyone could offer would be much appreciated.

I'm including a screen capture of the message.

A:Error when opening a file in Windows Explorer

Hey. Nicely laid out explanation. Refreshing.

You could very well try installing the software again using compatibility mode for XP SP3.

To do so, right click on the installer's .exe file and choose properties. There's a compatibility tab to go to. I trust by my estimation of your intelligence that you can figure out the rest.

If it is on CD or DVD, copy entire contents to HDD first. Then do as I've outlined.

After, run the .exe and install. Might be better to uninstall original attempt prior to new install.

Good luck and let us know if this works for you. Hopefully you make some great designs. heh heh

One of my excell files was opened by another computer on my network, and incorrectly saved (i think). This file has vital information for my small business, so i need to access it quite often. It was locked for editing, and everytime i moved my mouse over it, the "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" popup appears.

i copied all the information out of the original file itself and saved it to a new name. I then deleted the original file(that was locked) with a program called "unlocker"; this was one of the first programs that came up on a google search.

however, when i move my mouse over this file, the same popup keeps appearing.

Hi All

In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

My mom has an HP Mini 210-1044NR laptop. It no longer boots up right. I've tried to get the desktop screen to load in normal mode and safe mode, yet I keep getting the same error message.

It says Windows Explorer has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem the next time you go online.

If I click close the program, it gives her a black screen and nothing happens. I cannot get to the start menu, even. Ctrl + Alt + Del brings up task manager, but it doesn't really give me much to work with.

I did have the desktop loaded at one point, but then it all froze up and shut down.

The problem details are:

Problem Event Name: InPageError
Error Status Code: c0000010
Faulting Media Type: 00000003
OS Version: 6.1.7600.
Locale ID: 1033

Is there any way to fix this? Maybe bring the desktop back up? Or even get to the start menu to run something and fix it? I am going crazy trying to figure out what to do. Please help!

I realize there are many posts on this issue. When I click a Word 2007 document in Windows Explorer, I get the message "Windows cannot open the file (path\name) make sure...etc." Word opens but file does not. With Word open, clicking brings up another instance of Word (without file) and same error. Same as other posts on this issue. Issue does not occur with any other files (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Acrobat, etc.) Happens with only Word extensions (docx, etc.) If I open Word and open the file from inside Word, all is fine.

I tried saving documents in different Word extensions, saving to different locations, but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop. I have repaired Office 2007 (Ultimate Version), uninstalled Word, reinstalled Word; tried the registry fix posted here and MS site (removing Data reg entry under Word). Used tool posted here to unassociate/reassociate .docs with Word. I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago, but apparently it started before that, because I still get the same error. I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate. I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried, but these are the ones that come to mind.

It is a three-week-old Dell 1545 laptop, 64-bit Vista. Not impossible to live with, but has me stumped. According to all the posts in networld and here, fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution.

If anyone knows of new tips, I'd sure appreciate it.

No matter how many times I reset file explorer in Windows 10, browsing through folder will open multiple windows and not keep the same windows at all. WTF? Is it this hard to get a basic god damn app to behave normally? Browsing through my D$ drive will spawn multiple windows. Or browsing through C$ will open the same window for the first folder then pop open a new window for anything else.

Anyone else having this issue? Any fix? Restoring defaults does nothing. I just want to keep the same window open for everything. I don't want to have multiple instances of file explorer windows while browsing. There used to be a target shortcut you could place in the shortcut of file explorer that would help out with this. Can anyone help?

A:Can't delete corrupted file on desktop -- Freezes explorer.exe

Hi Zorai

Did you try deleting it from Safe Mode? If you haven't tried that yet, give it a go.

If that doesn't work, perhaps the easiest way to delete it would be to boot your PC with a Linux Live CD (or DVD) and delete the file using it's file explorer. Easy to use versions are readily available (and free - since they are "open source") ... some of the more popular versions are from Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Knoppix, SUSE, Scientific Linux ... etc. Your favorite search engine will yield many results.

The desktop will be listed under the Users folder --> Users\username\Desktop -- since the file is on the Desktop, you should be able to delete it permanently from there.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

P.S. ... might have Kapersky run a full scan, too.

Okay, here we go. Computer (sony-vaio desktop, turning 4 yrs old next month): Windows XP Home SP 2, IE7 and latest version of Firefox, Norton AntiVirus 2003 (I mention my AV software in case any of your solutions may conflict with it).
My index.dat file under Content IE5 (which in turn is in the Temporary Internet Files folder) is bloated. I believe there are several Internet Explorer dat.files around besides the one mentioned. I ran ATF Cleaner, but it does not clean index.dat files. I was told NOT to run ccleaner, as it is said to be aggressive and can destroy computers. I do NOT want to do anything with the registry by the way, only clean out the index.dat files.
Since the index.dat files are protected by the systems, I can't get at them manually. I don't even know where the remaining index.dat files (ONLY for Internet Explorer) are located.
So...How do I SAFELY delete those files? I am not at all well-versed in computer lore and do not want a solution via DOS either (and I remember that XP has an equivalent of DOS but not DOS itself).
I'd be really happy if someone could help me out - the dat files eat space.

This is the strangest problem I have imported folder.reg and directory.reg but I still can not start explorer.exe.  If I type explorer.exe /e it will launch ok.. If I launch it from a shortcut it launches fine.  But I can not get it to launch by clicking on explorer.exe.   All other executables work fine but for one other which I try to run which is Windows7UpgradeAdvisorSetup.exe it gives me error "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."
I have checked local security policies and there is none in effect.  I have ran software to check for policies but I can not find any policies to cause the above two problems.
Ran Drweb nothing found
Adwcleaner nothing found
Malwarebytes nothing found
So I thought ok let's try an upgrade install to repair my Windows 7 OS but I get message that Windows Vista SP1 has to be installed at mininum so I am not able to do a repair install either.  Except for the two problems everything is working fine and giving me absolutely no issues at all.

Maybe some kind of virus corrupted your windows file association in registry. Download this reg file and unzip it and than run the reg file that was inside. But i strongly suggest that you backup you registry first just in case.

During a TrendMicro virus scan, it found an archive that was infected. A quick check of the archive (Which I'd grabbed months before, but never ran) showed it was actually an application, so I went to shift+del the file (No sense dumping a virus into the recycle bin), and poof it's gone.

Then I went to delete the folder it was in, but... it wouldn't let me. Told me I didn't have the permissions to do so. A quick check of the folder's contents revealed the virus/app was back, as if it had never been deleted.

If I try doing a regular delete, it tells me Destination Folder Access Denied.

So I started poking around the file's security properties.
"Unable to display current owner."

I tried changing the owner, but it wouldn't let me do that.
I downloaded Unlocker, right-clicked on the file and unlocked it, but nothing seemed to happen, and same results when I try to delete it.

I'm running Vista 32-bit, not connected to a local network (Just one computer), and I'd really like to delete this virus/app off my machine. TrendMicro was unable to get rid of it, and I can't seem to get rid of it either.

A:Solved: Cannot delete file / No Permissions - Unable to display current owner of file

Ha, nevermind. Unlocker just took an enormous amount of time in actually starting up, and turns out the virus scanner had a process linked to the file. So, problem solved. Nothing to see here.

I am wondering if anyone can provide the equivalent to this linux script. When run against a text file with one entry per line being the name of a directory, it deletes the named directories.

On linux, I run this against the text list.
while IFS='' read -r line || [[ -n "$line" ]]; do
rm -R $line
done < "$1"

I am not sure how to make it do the same for Windows. I can do this, but I'm hoping there's a way to delete based on what's in the text file. Also, wouldn't want it to prompt for deletion of each, but to just delete.

@echo on
cd \
dir /D /N 0
for /D %%f in (XX*) do rmdir %%f /s
%comspec% /k

Thank you

A:Batch file or command to delete directories named in a text file

It's easiest to clean out the files before removing the directory.
echo Y|del *.* will clean out the files in a directory as long as there are no hidden or system files, you need to remove the attributes of files with the attrib command before the bat will delete the directory.
the echo Y| simply answers yes to any confirmation messages

Problem: A while ago I emptied the recycle bin. After emptying, a folder remained that had 4-5 files in it. I don't recall exactly what the files were.

I tried to delete the folder, and got the message in the title.

No problem I thought, and I got out a handy file shredder and shredded that file to pieces. It was gone.

Except it's not. When I use CCleaner or other aps to clean my system, the "cannot delete file:..." message in the title pops up.

If I go to the recycle bin and empty it, I get the message. When I look in the recycle bin, it is empty, but if I tell it to empty itself I get the message.

So the folder is in the recycle bin, invisible. It was "shredded", but still remains.

I have entered safe mode, but is still get the message when I try to empty the recycle bin or use CCleaner.

I have read things that reference deleting the entire recycle bin (which then recreates itself), but am not clear on this or if it is a good idea.

My system runs fine, it's just an annoyance.

Any ideas from the experts here (you solved a big virus issue I had a while ago, and this is nothing in comparision, but hopefully somebody has seen this issue before...)

Yo. This is my first post lets see what happens...

Here's the deal.

My buddy accessed a shared folder on my PC and uploaded some production tools to it. He uses a MAC.

So now I have this file called "._spooky tambo shake "

The problem is, if I try delete, rename, move, or do anything for that matter to the file I get an error message "Error deleting file or folder: Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk."

I've tried using command prompt to delete the file but it doesn't even show up if I type "Dir"

Properties for the file are zero everything.

I've tried a program called KillBox but even that can't do it.

Hi all... Recently my laptop's startup kept popping out this message:

Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk

A:Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk

Hi lostinspac and welcome to TSF !

Good registry cleaners have a way to restore the changes you made. Try that and see if it helps.

Check the start => all programs => startup folder for related shortcuts, move them to another location and see if it helps.

Go to start => run and type msconfig. Check the items you'll find in the startup tab against bleepingcomputer's database. If you make changes there (and each time you'll make changes there) you'll get a warning about being in selective mode when windows restart. Tick the box and click ok so that it stays in that mode and doesn't bother you again. Make sure you don't untick your antivirus or firewall.

We're not big fans of registry cleaners at TSF. See post #2 here. you don't always know what they do, there's no way they know everything about all entries your programs need and they can do worse than good. Cleaning minor problems in the registry won't speed up your compter noticeably anyway.

Whenever I try to delete my temporary internet files in bulks or by selecting all then deleting, it gives that "cannot delete file bla bla bla" message. HOWEVER, I'm able to delete them if I delete them one by one (ANNOYING!). I could also delete all the files the other way: choosing "delete files", but that's irrelevant.

I use IE 8, Windows XP SP 3 Media Center Edition.

A:Cannot Delete file: Cannot read from source file or Disk

First off why are you attempting to delete temporary Internet files manually? Internet Explorer has built in tools to make this easy. Windows XP has disk cleanup which also makes removing Temporary files easy.Should those two methods not suit you, I'd recommend this free utility pick what you want, and it will do the rest. The reason you receive "Cannot delete file" is the index.dat file is always in "use" by Internet Explorer and can only be deleted on reboot.

Hi all. I searched this but found nothing that is the same as my situation or recent either.
I have over 37000 files of duplicate songs I would love to rid my pc of. I did a search using *(2) and all the files show up but i get the 'cannot delete file:cannot read from the source file or disk' error.
I searched duplicate music files this way once before and it eliminated a ton of dupes in seconds but now it wont work.
I have a dual boot system. XP and 7 and since I couldn't get the search to work like xp in win7( every file with a 2 in it in any configuration or location in the file name, dupe or not, was listed) , I copy and pasted the entire music folder(317gbs) to the xp o/s hd and tried the search there and am where I am now. My search page with all the files listed with a (2) and ready to delete...
I haven't tried a safe mode attempt because I have read from many who've tried it didn't work.

It's driving me crazy seeing all those duplicate files just sitting there and I can't delete them!

Reports owner unknown. I can't change ownership, remove file properties, any of that stuff. Can't rename or delete. I'm logged in as administrator but it keeps asking for administrator permission.

Another question about file ownerships - I tried to do a backup once, during an OS re-install, many files came back garbled, with file names switched around, many picture files had a file size but would not open, even if I changed the extensions, etc.

It seems easier to just copy files to an external, then copy back, than doing the windows backup. Is this what other's have found?

2. Tried to scan the file for a virus. Got the error message "Scan was completed with error. Error:The system cannot find the file specified."

6. Booted in Safe Mode and attempted to delete. Same result.

Alright, so what I'm trying to do is list all the shortcuts & folders in the start menu and list all the shortcuts & folders on the desktop and put this into a text file. The reason is to get a full list of programs our teachers use before we re-image their machine and not all of their programs are listed in add/remove programs and not all programs make a folder in Program Files, that is why I'm trying to do it in this roundabout way. What I have so far is this:

@echo off
mkdir "p:\Program List"
DIR "c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\*" /S/B/OD > "p:\Program List\%computername% Start Menu.txt"
DIR "c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop\*" /S/B/OD > "p:\Program List\%computername% Desktop.txt"

This works perfectly but the only problem is the file has these:
c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\
c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop\

before each entry in the text file. Is there an easy way to remove these lines so the text files are easier to read? I've checked other sources and can't figure out how to get this to work...

A:[SOLVED] Delete text from .txt file in a batch file

Open the files in Notepad, click Edit, then replace, and enter the string C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ and replace it with nothing (no entry).

I am going nuts here. I downloaded a file for work purposes last night & have been having problems ever since. I downloaded a .mov video off of a site. I wasn't able to download it directly, so I used RealPlayer recorder and saved it to my desktop. The file is 164 MB. I haven't been able to open the video with any program (they freeze up when I try). I downloaded the video because I wanted to convert it to an .MP3 so I could transcribe it easier, I was unsuccessful with that.I can't delete the file. It goes through the motions, saying it is sending to the recycling bin, but it never completes it. I tried going into command prompt and deleting it that way. It shows up in the directory, but when I type the request to delete it, it says the file is not found! I also tried deleting it from the desktop in safe mode. That didn't work either.I have scanned with McAfee, MalwareBytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. Those haven't picked up anything. I used ATF Cleaner. I did a System Restore, hoping that would solve my problem. That just seemed to make things worse, because now McAfee is disabled for computer & files, it won't fix the protection items because it says some components are missing (this might possibly resolve itself with a reboot, as I have had it do that before). Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to say that this seems like a swell enough forum as is and I am frankly out of ideas. About a year ago I had backed up a rather large series of files under one name for my roommate who was in the process of doing some "spring cleaning" on his computer. Fast forward to now and he is out of Hard-drive space damn near and has been unable to find the reserve file himself. Below is the directory under which I named and saved the around 200gb file of games and old-ROTC documents. Regardless the file needs to be found and even after un-hiding all files from the control panel, I have yet been able to locate it. It would seem to be simple enough, one would think that you could see the file name sitting above Program Files but it is not. Any one have any ideas, we would rather not have to reformat/ system restore if we can avoid it.

Hello All -

I've been around here a couple of time in the last couple of years with my Vista machine and you all always seem to have the answers for me. So here I go again.

Now I'm sure there is a simple fix for this, but I can't seem to find it. ....

I happen to have two files now that I can NOT delete. I keep getting the message;

Could not find this item

This is no longer lacated in C:\Users\RoyBoy\Favorites.
Verify the item's location and try again.
Now, you know I'm looking right at the file (both in Window Explore - the shortcut, and in it's file location) and the item is there. What's the deal! I'll tell you that these are both Favorite Folders file types and they both have files that I'm trying to delete. You see, I tuned up all me favorites & reorganized things alittle and I did this with Chrome. BTW Then, wanting to sync those newly organized favorites to my Favorite Folder, I created a folder caller "Bookmarks Old" and moved all the old favorites into that folder. I opened IE8 and imported the the exported file from chrome and thus repopulated my Favorite folder. Now wanting to delete that "Bookmarks Old" and it will not let me.

Come on - there has got to be a simple fix for this. Please don't even go to the 'complete re-install' line

Thanks All!

It?s on a drive (h:) that?s sync?d to a network and only appears when I?m not connected to the network. This makes it difficult to use things like ccleaner, deletefxpfiles, chkdsk etc.

I?ve tried deleting it from a command line (tells me it doesn't exist) in safe cmd mode (couldn't log on) deleting the folder and a bunch of other things ? but no joy.

A:Windows 7 64bit unable to file missing file in Hijackthis log file

It's doubtful those files are missing. More likely a bug still present in HijackThis where it cannot correctly enumerate some entries, so it gives a (file missing).

I would not put any faith in online analyzers such as that one. Much better to use these online databases

There's nothing wrong with any of those entries. Please leave them alone.

Analysis logs are only to be posted in this section of the forum, not General Security. I've moved it here.

I see no sign of infection in those logs. If you think the machine is infected...

I'd appreciate it if anyone can help solve this problem.

When I left click or right click on an MP4 file, Windows Explorer encounters a problem and needs to close.
Explorer closes and restarts. If the MP4 was left clicked, Real Player will start and play the file. If the MP4 was right clicked, right click menu will open and error window will open immediately after.

The error report shows:
Error signature
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512 ModName: quicktime.qts
ModVer: Offset: 002d12b5

This problem started today, after I tried to copy a folder containing MP4 files while viewing one of the MP4 files in the folder. Yeah, I know....I remain my own worst enemy.

Recently I've been getting this message. Originally a game started crashing when it was opened, I tried uninstalling it, but certain files couldn't be removed due to cyclic redundancy. I then tried deleting the files/folders manaully but it just stalls (and causes computer lagging) and eventually comes up with the message in the title.
While it stalls I can hear the hard drive trying to access the files. I have previously gotten this message when trying to access files off a DVD but this is the first time its happened with files off the hard drive.
I also had to reboot my PC because the lagging was so bad, when it restarted windows had reset to its default settings, i.e. desktop pitcture, sound settings, folder settings etc. Luckily all folders except my desktop folder have not been affected.

What can I do to fix this problem?
I've reset windows to the way I like it, but I want access to these folders so I can sort them out.

A:Problem: Cannot delete 'file/folder name': Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I rebooted again and my old windows settings returned, but I still can't access the file and folders because of the cyclic redundancy.

Hello. I am using a POWER USER account, Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 /w all the latest patches availible via microsoft update. I was trying to create a .zip file of a folder within the primary directroy of a backup hard drive I use.

For Example:
D:\stuff - I wanted to make a zipfile of the folder "stuff."

Then I get the following error "Cannot Create Output File."

However, if I move the folder to the destop or a subdirectory i.e. stuff/more stuff, then the .zip file is created with no problems.

Also, because user accounts [at least in my experience] have a tendency to decay, I created a freash power user account and the same problem persist.

Is this a standard security feature for power user accounts? Is there anyway I can "disable" it if it is?

Thank You.

I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
The funny thing is that windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago ... can I somehow set this back to the normal winxp picture and fax displaying thing?

In windows Explorer files of the extention .avi will have an icon that is that little film strip with a screen shot from the video file. Matroska files (.mkv) only show a generic icon in explorer? How can i fix this so that the Matroska file will show the screen shot from the video file as is does with avi files in windows explorer? I have Home Premium? Thanks:)

A:Matroska File to show screen shot as icon like an avi file does in explorer

I wrote a similar post about mov files in here
Have a quick read at it (to understand what you're doing and why it's the way it is), then grab some matroska directshow filters. There's a list here:

P.S: Keep in mind the filter sparses the mkv file only (aka the container), it does not decode the audio or video stream inside of it. If you're only getting a filter but can't see the video, it would be because you're missing the codec (compressor-decompressor) for the video stream. I'm mentioning it because mkv files are usually encoded using codecs for which the avi container is not suitable (for example H.264 or AC3). If that's the problem, be sure to get codecs too (for example ffdshow-tryouts for H.264, or AC3filter for AC3).

Anytime I drag a file(s) in a folder window, a translucent, oversized icon follows the mouse pointer, partially obscuring up to 4 nearby items.

Can this effect be disabled? I'm sure somebody at MS thought it was slick idea, but it just gives me a headache. I haven't found a setting that controls it -- maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. (Am guessing, while this isn't an "animation" per se, it's in the same general category.)

Thanks a ton for any clues.

Well it happens to both of my video files (mkv) right after i've extracted the file. What puzzled me is that it says windows explorer is using it which i ddn't even play the video. I tried looking around in task manager trying to stop the process but stopping explorer.exe would end up closing everything but leaving just the wallpaper.

A:Can I delete this file under the windows directory.

Just to be on the safe side leave it alone for a bit and run a HijackThis as shown and let one of our HJT experts diagnose the system.

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following:;dl=item5
Filename = 1137518044HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A security expert should take a look at your log - please be patient.

[unlocker fixed it]

A:Windows 8 File can't delete with cmd prompt

That might mean, the file is being loaded into a Player and running, so it can't be deleted while it is being accessed, and it's locking up in the CMD prompt cos of this as well. Stronger Measures are required.

Google "Malwarebytes File Assassin" and use that to delete the file, it will kill any processes that's related to it and make it vanish.

There is also a Program called "Unlocker" that you can get at Major Geeks, does the same thing, but be careful the installer has a bad toolbar, you have to tell it not to install that.

Hi, my partner reinstalled his bro's computer and put a copy of his hard drive on my computer for "safe keeping". It's 3.2gig and now I want to get rid of it but I can't. Whenever I try to open or delete any folder within it I get "D:/Peter/games is not accessible - Access is denied" I am administrator and I guess somehow his folder permissions have been transferred over but I don't know what to do next. I'm running win XP. We've tried DOS prompt, Nortons System Works, windows Safe mode and another random little DOS program. None will even allow me to look at the folders - which are games, fat32, windows, documents and settings, should of, and program files.

When I try to delete the file, I get an error that tells me another process is using it. All other files on the drive work just fine. Here's what I've done:

1. Safe Mode with Networking - same error
2. command prompt - same error
3. Unlocker either isn't running right or doesn't detect that it's locked as I get no unlocker options when the right click menu FINALLY come up. It takes a REALLY long time to get the menu to appear after right clicking on it
4. Malware Bytes File Assasin just reports that it's in use by another process and tells me to quit that process.

I was working on my PC last night and it suddenly rebooted. When it had booted up I found that my C drive was approximately 9GB smaller than before. I did a check with WinStatDir and found three new files (3GB each) in the Windows folder, E, 0 and another one the letter of which escapes me. I tried to delete them through WinStatDir but was told they couldn't be deleted as they were in use. I rebooted in safe mode to try to remove them but still no joy. When I navigate to the Windows folder I can't see the files at all!

Does anybody know if this is a known virus and if so how to remoive it?

Many thanks for any assistance that you can provide.

Not sure if this is an annoying bug that everyone knows about by now, but I'm hoping there's a setting or registry value I've overlooked.

Here is how to reproduce and some loverly pictures.

1. Open File Explorer to a folder with multiple files and select one with left click.
2. Right click on that same file and you'll get your normal context menu.

3. However, if you right click any other folder or file besides the already selected ones, you will clear the selection and not get the context menu for the file or folder that you right-clicked on.
In previous versions File Explorer behaved rationally and a selection event was presumed when right-clicking an unselected item.

Are we out of luck until MS fixes this or is there a remedy?

When I click on the Explorer icon on the desk top, it returns the following messge: "the file or folder 'Explorer.Ink" that this shortcut refers to cannot be found". What does this mean? How do I fix it?

A:Explorer.Ink file error message

hey, did you drag the icon from the start menu to the desktop? usually thats why that happens:

- Right click the link on the desktop
- Click properties
- Find the location it points to and see if it's in the start menu folders
(e.g. "C:\Documents and settings\All Users\Start Menu\explorer.lnk" [or your username])

If it points to the start menu then change it to the program menu's entry, or re-copy the link from the start menu to the desktop (maybe you changed the name of the one in the start menu)...

Hey all!

I came across the programs Delinvfile and Unlocker, but they did not seem to work for me.

Appreciate any help!

A:Can't delete file due to invalid file name

Try this: Open an Elevated Command Prompt. Change to the directory (folder) the file is in. You do this using the cd command.
For instance, if the file is in your Pictures folder, you would enter:

cd C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\Pictures (xxxxxxxx is your account name)

Once in the right directory (folder), use the del command as follows to see if you can delete it. If, for instance, the file starts with asdfg0000....... etc,

del asdfg000*

That will delete any file that begins with the letters adsfg000, so be careful. Make sure you use enough of the beginning letters so the del command will only delete that file.

I'm about to tear out my hair. First Windows Explorer keeps stopping, searches for solution then restarts. About the time this problem, I noticed that Windows Explorer will change the original creation date on some of my files. It might be all files in folder or just certain types. I've yet to make a connection with when this is happening or what is causing it. Not necessarily when Windows Explorer stops. It's difficult when you can't tell which is the oldest/newest file in a folder.
