A:BitDefender Antivirus Free vs Avast Antivirus Free vs Avira Antivirus Free

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM): draw, with the indication of Avira, since BitDefender takes overall a little bit less of CPU time, but consumes much more RAM.
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker): Avira has more features, configuration options and is generally more effective when it comes to the malware detection (Proactive and Reactive).
Overall Winner: Avira.
Edit: I've just noticed, that you've added Avast - as the third contestant - to BitDefender and Avira. Still Avira is the winner here. Avast is not too hungry for PC resources and perhaps has more features, but its engine is not so good, and its detection ratio usually lags behind both: BitDefender and Avira.

Sophos Home Free Antivirus vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016. Which one do you pick and why?

A:Sophos Home Free Antivirus vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016

I have to say that I haven't tried Sophos until now. But my opinion about Panda goes like this.

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM)?Panda is efficient in both of them, but during scans it may use more CPU resources

Real World System Impact?Quiet Low

User Friendliness? 5/5

User Interface? 5/5

Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker)?4/5
Overall Winner? Since i haven't tried Sophos I cannot give verdict for the best between the two.

Thankyou And Happy New Year.

I've tried many free antivirus over the years, but these two have always consistently been the ones I liked the most.

After some issues with Windows 10 last year, I had to briefly switch to Avira but after the issues were fixed I got back to Avast because it was the one I had learned to rely upon in the last few years. However, I'm open to reassess my position between these two excellent products. Something that has also spurred me to reassess the situation was the fact that LifeHacker has recently changed their recommendation from Avast to Avira as the "The Best (Free) Antivirus App for Windows".

On one hand Avast offers a more complete feature set:

File System Shield
Web Shield
Mail Shield
Behavior Blocker (DeepScreen)

Still, I disable the E-mail blocker because I solely use Web mail. I also disable the Web shield because:

It seems to slightly slow down my browsing
I don't like to have all my HTTP traffic analyzed by the AV or any other program
Sometimes it doesn't play well with HTTPS because it internally to scan the encrypted traffic which changes the original website's certificate (I know I can selectively disable the Web Shield for HTTPS only)

So, in practice, I have been using the File System Shield and the Behavior Blocker at default sensitivity settings (no Hardened Mode) to avoid too many False Positives and issues with less known software. I've had no problems with this set up for a long time.

Regarding Avira, it lac... Read more

avira is anoying when detect some " infecction". run quick scan then many times ask fot reset pc not really good deleting real "dangers".
another thing is " the cloud " based.. oh common without internet cant do nothing really ?..
Abouth resources 50/50 both are good in this, ofc more " shields " u active and more " grade of detection " u activate more cpu/ram uses.

A:F-Secure Internet Security 2016 vs Panda Free Antivirus 2016

If a security soft ranks amongst the top performing AVs, it won't matter much if it does function correctly or causes problems on your specific system.

From lab test results F-Secure has an edge over Panda during testing the past few years in terms of detection (although higher false positives).

From users, it seems more prefer Panda - which is one of Neil Rubenking's (PCMag) favs (that don't mean much - but that is just my opinion).

I'd say, in terms of overall protection, Panda has a slight edge; it might protect your system in a few instances that F-Secure will not.

Hi, all!
With interest I have read the Emsisoft Blog article about free anti-virus vendors that bundle PUPs with them. Here, 7 out of 8 tested free antivirus suites bundle with PUPs. A bit further down the article, an important fact is stated, and I quote:

...Bitdefender Free is one of the only clean antivirus vendors that does not come with any PUPs.

I therefore would like to know: Which more free anti-virus suites than Bitdefender Free do not bundle PUPs?
Thank you very much in advance!

A:Most free anti-virus suites now bundle PUPs except Bitdefender Free?

Well, Emsisoft Anti-Malware offers a 30 days trial of their program and doesn't bundle PUPs. Emsisoft doesn't bundle any PUPs at all in fact.

I am deciding bewtween Panda Free 2016 and 360 Total Security. I know 360 has really good protections but have also heard that they tend to quarantine Windows system files. I do not know much about Panda except that it is heavily reliant on cloud, which is fine and they do decent in independent testing. I would like your opinion on which one you think is better for a reliable, effective, and light antivirus experience.

A:Panda Free 2016 vs 360 Total Security

Qihoo has one of the best detection, the downside is a lot of false positive, if you use all the engines in real time it will use a lot of memory.

Effective Malware Blocking
Panda scored very well in my hands-on malware blocking test. When I opened a folder containing my current malware sample collection, it didn't do anything immediately. That's because Panda waits for a significant event like file creation or modification; it doesn't scan just because a process accessed the file. When I copies the collection to another folder, Panda got to work, quickly wiping out 86 percent of the samples.

It also caught some of the remaining samples when I launched them. Overall, it detected 89 percent of the samples and earned 8.8 points, the same as Kaspersky. Among products tested with this same collection, Trend Micro has the best scores, with 93 percent detection and 9.1 points.

Results from tests with my previous malware collection aren't directly comparable, of course, but you have to appreciate what Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus (2015) did with that bunch. It detected 100 percent of the samples and earned a perfect 10 points.

My malicious URL blocking test doesn't rely on a pre-set collection of samples. Rather, I take the very newest list of malicious URLs supplied by MRG-Effitas and attempt to download real-world malware samples. The antivirus gets credit for blocking access to the URL or for wiping out the file during or immediately after the download. I keep at this test until I have results for 100 very new malicious URLs.

As I proceeded with the test, Panda's stats stayed remarkably... Read more

360 Total Security Essentials is all that is needed. With Avira and Bitdefender engines enabled, RAM usage is high... but only when interface is open or scanning. It will only be a real problem if user always has interface open.

Protection far outweighs the RAM usage. Plus, 360 Essentials is very user friendly.

Can you open the Bitdefender program/interface, then take a screenshot of it to post it here so we can see what you're seeing? Also, many free Antivirus products will ask you to registry in order to use them. So they are free, they just ask you to register yourself in order to be able to use them.

So, I'm choosing a free antivirus software to use on my daily driver (I'm a vary advanced user) and I'm trying to decide between Bitdefender free and avast free.
First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?
Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything).
So which do you think I should go with? Thanks

A:Avast Free or Bitdefender Free?

Hi Robo11 First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?It's false. Bitdefender is still actively developped and have quite a good share of the Antivirus market. About the buggy part, it's down to the user's experience. Personally, most of the experiences I had with Bitdefender were quite bad. It was buggy, hogging resources, hard to uninstall, etc. But for some, it might just be the "best Antivirus" they ever used. Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything). It's false as well. There's no reputable Antivirus company that would do such a thing. Also, avast! forums offers malware removal assistance in the same kind as BleepingComputer, and there's also UNITE members helping on its forums, so I really doubt that this would ever happen. If you're torn between these two products, since both of them are free, I would suggest you to give them both a try (one after the other, not at the same time) and see for yourself which one you like better. My personal choice goes to avast!, but that's just me. I thought it would be a good idea in keeping with the overall goal of this site to start a thread to give people a list of legal and secure sites for downloading free or dirt-cheap movies, music and software/games.
I believe this would helpful in terms of not just telling people not to visit/support pirating websites,
but to also give them other alternatives so that there wouldn't be a temptation to go there anyway
(And also for people like me that Don't want to steal, but also don't want to pay more than I have to)

As such, some of the music may be considered "pirated" in countries with longer copyright periods.
For example, The longest copyright period I know of is Mexico (100 years after the author's death).

-No additional settings to configure it for yourself.

I'm trying out Panda Free 2015, and it seems pretty good so far. I've been using Avast for years, but noticed that it seems to slow down my boot up. Also, the nagging popups are a bit annoying. Anyway, I see that the latest version of Panda has done very well in most reviews and independent tests. How do you think it compares to the other free products, particularly Bitdefender Free?

I would just buy an AV product, but they all seem to be yearly subscriptions. I'm not into that at all. Especially when there are good options for free.

A:Panda Free vs others

BitDefender Free is not configurable, and not being updated. Panda Free 2015 is faster and has higher detection rates. If you want a solid Free AV, go for 360 Internet Security, but sometimes it has false positives. If you want a better one and a lighter one, which offers very good detection and very good web blocking, then ESET NOD32 or ESET Smart Security will do.

I dont know however if ESET offers a lifetime license or just a yearly subscription. Among all that I have tested, Emsisoft and ESET offer the best protection, but ESET is lighter and faster and has very small signature updates. But Emsisoft gets lighter the longer u use it (same with almost any AV).

If you like another tight free AV, another choice is Comodo. But, you have to configure it properly and it has lots of pop-ups.

Hello Malwaretipsers!
Just heard about Bitdefender free antivirus and downloaded it.

I am very happy with the low system impact
but I miss an exclude feature, and a way to remove things from quarantine to be able to use it.

My question is:
If I use this purely as my only security product will that be enough?
OFC, windows firewall is still enabled.

I use google chrome with adblock+ and scriptno & ghostery.
sure, I might download stuff on utorrent, but will bitdefender free protect me?

Also, the most important thing for me is that it's secure enough to make my banking business on the computer.

Thanks for the help!

I have been using AVG free and I really liked it. It did however steal focus a bit too often for me causing my games to minimize and getting me fragged. That really was a bummer.

I have downloaded and installed bitdefender free and was wanting some opinions from the security experts here. I don't see it recommended often, and did a search of the forums with not many results.

I see the paid version recommended, but not the free one.

A:BitDefender free, any good?

I had it on my PC as a backup. So it was not running all the time. It is a easy and simple one I like. But I did a upgrade to there newer version but it was only good for 30 days. Don't know why it happen like that because it says right at the top I had the free version.
Anyhow I did get it all uninstall and reinstalled like there tech said but had the same trouble still.
Then I unistalled it and went looking around and cleaned up other files and folders and cleaned up the registry.
I want to install it again but was waiting for the 30 days to pass before installing it again.

But I liked it and it was good till that newer version came out and I installed it and what ever bug in it was putting a time limit on the free version.

Hey guy. I installed BD Free on a new install for a customer and everything seems to be running fine. It updated and is scanning , but when I tried to register it I got this message, " the connection to the server failed, the product can not be activated". I tried installing it on an old xp I had to see what turns up and got the same error message as the other computer. Any ideas on what is going on ? I went to the BD forum but that seems useless.

*Moderator Edit: split from ~ Queen-Evie*I'm jumping into this topic with a query and a comment.  My comment relates to Bit Defender.  I have been unable to completely remove all files even using the BD tool.  It trashes my internet connection, and I have tried a myriad of recommended actions in conjunction with experts in another forum.  I have reached the point where BD no longer interferes with my computer, but many files remain in a folder that cannot be removed, as BD refuses to acknowledge my administrator access.  I have grown to hate BD and would never recommend it to anyone. My query relates to using Malwarebytes concurrently with Panda free version, which seems to be infinitely preferable to BD.  Panda tell me that it will probably be OK to do so.  Does anyone have a more definitive answer?

A:Panda Free and Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes is designed to run along side your antivirus so you can use it with Panda. The best thing to do is try it.

Had to use refresh install to get the bugger back on so it wasn't a pleasant tour but I doubt it will be that way in win-7 ?

Hi all!

What do you think I should use as a second opinion scanner?

Until now I use ESET + MBAM. I never used EMSISOFT but I always hear good things about it

A:EMSISOFT Anti-Malware free or MBAM Free as a second opinion scanner

Why not both using MBAM and Emsisoft Emergency Kit? On demand scanners should help you to track down potential infections as possible with various tools available.

Emsisoft AM is a full blown AV but it can be experimental on other security products as combination just use at your own risk as possible.

This is a mini-review of BitDefender Free. ** See illustration below in thread and next post for important infos **

Virtually 0 % resource usage on my W8.1 system (even when running full scan).
Essentially requires no user interaction; virtually "set-and-forget."
Requires virtually no user knowledge/experience to quickly learn to use properly.
No cost (but not free).
Signature database identical to paid version (but local signature cache is tiny, so detections may take a long time until BD Free cycles through entire signature database during its continuous scan).
Malicious URL blocking that does work equivalent to paid version.
User can manually perform full-system scan.
Real-time protection (Virus Shield with heuristics/Active Virus Control).
Can Quarantine, Restore and re-Quarantine detected files.

No firewall.
To be effective, system should not be turned off so as to always have continuous scan running.
Scans are so slow that malware may be on system for far too long.
No way to increase scan speed.
Essentially no support (but there is a PDF manual).
Online offers when register product.
BD Free will auto-delete files without user approval during installtion; it deleted Emsisoft's a2hook32.dll during the initial installation scan (see posted screenshot in thread with reason why BD Free did it).

BD Free is the minimalist AV taken to the absolute limit. It is so extreme I consider it "Experimental." A curiosity... Read more

I have used this free antivirus on a number of machines for quite some time
I upgraded on machine to Windows 10, and installed Bitdefender with no apparent problems.
I was told a few times that bitdefender was not compatible with win 10, but I persisted.
Upon opening a topic here in BC dealing with a damn annoying "freeze' that this particuolar machine will do.....I was advised to uninstall bitdefender, as that may be one of the possible causes.
Fair enough...I did that....allowed windows defender to take over. (it did nothing to alter the 'freeze" still exists to this day )
Just today, I have gone on a concentrated search and......Bitdefender is NOT....repeat NOT compatible with Windows 10
From the Bitdefender website....

That's the question. MSE works pretty well but it seems BitDefender gets high marks (everyone is assuming the free version is using much of the same engine found in the pay version - I hope that's true). I'd like to give it a try if they can work together without stepping on each other.

A:Can free BitDefender and MSE live together happily?

I do not recommend having two anti virus programs on one computer at one time.
It doesn't matter which two brands. Just install one at a time.
I use MSE and many have good luck with Avast but still just one at a time.

2) Product User Manual (PDF direct download):

3) Wilders Security Discussion (complete with one of the designers): Bitdefender Antivirus Free - English GUI - Wilders Security Forums

BD Free AV was just released for the english market (it has been available for Romanian users for quite a while). I installed this on my W7 x64 machine this morning and it has been working flawlessly. It is very much a set it and forget it AV that is cloud based. It uses about 100MB of RAM on boot for a couple of minutes and then fluctuates around 30MB and below. It has very little disc I/O, especially when compared to other cloud based AVs like Panda Cloud. The UI is as simple as anything I have seen, and there are no settings to configure. It will auto update itself hourly, do an auto quick scan daily, and an auto full scan weekly.

I recommend using the BD product page that I linked to in this post (#1) to download the product, as some of the direct downloads in the Wilders thread didn't want to install the english version. The user manual is very well written, and gives a ton of info on the design philosophy as well as how to install, manage and uninstall it. This could very well be one of the best new AV releases in quite some time.

I have already installed avast! anti-virus 5.0.

For extra protection, I have installed Bitdefender 2009 free which is just an on demand scanner (no real-time or on-access scanning). It offers free automatic updates and allows scheduled scanning. It also shows an icon in the system tray.

I was thinking that by doing this I would have the benefit of scanning with 2 different antivirus engines. But does Bitdefender antivirus 2009 free interfere with other antivirus software installed? Although Bitdefender 2009 free is just an on demand scanner, yet I see its many processes running all the time.

A:Bitdefender free 2009 + other antivirus ?

Even when one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves into the operating systems core and using more than one can cause instability, crash your computer, slow performance and waste system resources. When the stand-alone is actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, they both may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior. When the stand-alone is running, the primary anti-virus may interpret the activity as suspicious behavior or vice-a-versa and there is a greater chance of them alerting you to a false positive. If one finds a virus or a suspicious file and then the other also finds the same, both programs will be competing over exclusive rights on dealing with that virus or suspicious file. Each anti-virus may attempt to remove the offending file and quarantine it at the same time resulting in a resource management issue as to which program gets permission to act first. If one anit-virus finds and quarantines the file before the other one does, then you encounter the problem of both wanting to scan each other's zipped or archived files and each reporting the other's quarantined contents. This can lead to a repetitive cycle of endless alerts that continually warn you that a v... Read more

Some ppl saying its alrdy not delovement anymore. But i dont think so, u still get every 1-2 hours signatur updates, the Forum for the free version is still opend and the detections is as good as the paid version. Sometimes the detections is even better(maybe because its more cloud based than the paid av from bitdefender). If u have a emsisoft key, use EIS9. The behavour blocker is top notch from eis.

In 2013 I tried Bitdefender Free 2013 on my WinXP computer.  I chose to uninstall it and thought I had using their own uninstaller program.  Now.... 1.5 years later I found Bitdefender again on my computer.  I was running Pitiform Speecy (nice program) and saw I had 2 antivirus programs running..... Avast! and Bitdenfender.  Wow... was I surprised.  I uninstalled Avast! because of an iastor.sys BSOD problem and that seems to have solved that problem.
Now, however, I have tried to uninstall Bitdefender but can't find a way.  It doesn't show up in Revo and I used the Bitdefender uninstall program again.  It appears to have worked but it still on the Virus Protection tab in Windows Security Center and also on Speecy.
Any help to remove Bitdefender completely is appreciated.

Sometimes the uninstall works more effectively if you first stop and disable the program's service (and associated processes) or perform the removal in safe mode so there are less processes which can interfere with the uninstallation.

Does anyone know what on earth is going on with Avira?? It hasn't updated for the last 2 days...consequently nothing running on the computer. I have windows xp, by the way. Commodo is on here. I have run malwarebytes..nothing. Spywareblaster..nothing. Obviously no scan from avira. Superantispyware...nothing. This is getting retarded. I uninstalled and reinstalled yesterday. Still no updating. What gives!!

I've used Avira Free for a few years now and never encountered a situation as you describe.

There is no reason for Avira to become hung up on any file type or file.

There is the possibility that malware files may be detected by Avira which cannot be handled...although I have never experienced such and would not expect this to be the case.

By default, Avira Free will automatically update in every 2 hours, while the paid version (Avira Pro) can be configured to automatically update in every 15 minutes. It will also update immediately when the PC is connected to the network.

I hope this is the correct place for this post as I don't need help removing anything.

I had Avira Antivirus (free) on my PCs - gave it another chance - and just the other day it popped up a window reporting that Superantispyware contained a trojan and subsequently quarantined it. (Happened on 2 computers I have). Because Avira admitted - about a year ago or so - that on some systems it had a memory leak - and that was true because one of my PCs would completely freeze up after a while - I replaced it with another antivirus program.

Has anyone else had this trojan alert ? I presume it's a false positive because Superantispyware has a good reputation in it's field.

I'm becoming increasingly put off with Avira - even tho it's highly rated on many sites/forums.

A:Avira (free) problems

I would assume that it's neither an accidental detection nor a sign that SAS is malicious.

The more likely issue is that Avira detected the signature files which SAS uses to detect malware. I've seen this once when I accidentally ran a scan (I think it was MBAM though it may have been SAS) at the time my Avast scheduled scan was going to begin. It didn't happen unless they were scanning at the same time, but Avira may be different.

My daughter rang me after she tried to plug in her new mobile dongle into her laptop - Avira flagged up a trojan -, sorry don';t have details and wouldn't let the software install. I got her to do various scans with Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, everything came up clean, so in the end I got her to uninstall Avira Free and install Bitdefender.

Lo and behold I plug in a brand new camera tonight into my desktop and get the same problem - Tr/Crypt.XPACK.Gen Trojan - I've also run Malwarebytes and Superantispyware scans and both clean. I also use Avira free.

Daughter's is a laptop running Win XP

Mines a desktop running Win 7

her's could have something on it - but am pretty sure mine doesn't, as I know this pc inside out, what are the chances of Avira flagging up false positives on two separate computers?

I downloaded and uninstalled the free version of Avira AV (was using Microsoft Security Essentials). It would not update properly, so I decided to uninstall it. I used Revo Uninstaller (advanced mode). After the uninstall I rebooted and Avira is still there. It does not appear in the Control Panel/Programs & Features and it is not in the list of programs in the start menu. I also downloaded and ran the Avira registry cleaner, which removed some registry items but left several others.

I could use some help in getting rid of this.

A:I cannot uninstall Avira Free AV

I think I solved it on my own. I re-installed the Avira AV over what was on my computer. This gave me a screen that gave me the option to remove the program, which I did. UI then ran the Avira registry cleaner again and was able to delete the remaining Avira related registry items.

Does Panda Free Antivirus ever receive product software updates like Avast and AVG?

Ex: Avast just got upgraded to Avast Free 2015. AVG did as well.

A:Panda Free Antivirus Question?

It should get some sort of updates. But the best way to find out is probably to go to their site and take a look and see if there is any info on that.

Updated to 5.2 .

Supports AFD drives, I understand.

It works very well for me, even recovering ext4 partitions. It can make a winpe disc for you - but like most of these things, you need to d/l waik for that.

Surprisingly, it also is free for commercial use
