Lightly OCing an i5. Is it worth it?

Q: Lightly OCing an i5. Is it worth it?

Hi all,

I have some questions about overclocking the i5, specifically a 2500k.

Firstly, i don't want to get a massive overclock, I'd like to keep my PC as quiet as possible.
Is there any point in adding just a few hundred mhz as it'll turbo upto 3.7 ghz anyway?

Will any overclock to the base frequency also add a corresponding increase to the turbo?

Is there any way to only increase the turbo limit but leave the base frquency at 3.3ghz?

A: Lightly OCing an i5. Is it worth it?

Most overclockers will just turn the turbo off, 3.7Ghz isn't much considering the 2500k can get to 4.5Ghz pretty easily.

If you are thinking of moderate OCing (or even if you're not OCing) then get a cheap aftermarket cooler, it will be quieter than the stock Intel cooler which is useless.

Hi all,
RAM PROBLEM: I want to SLIGHTLY overclock my RAM. Its 512MB, DDR2 533Mhz.
But I am confused, how to do it.
Let me tell you the options available for RAM is my mobo's bios:

1. DRAM Timing:
a. Auto
b. Turbo
c. Ultra
d. Manual
DRAM CAS# Latency [DDR/DDR2] 2.5/4(current setting)
DRAM Bank Interleave 4-Way
Precharge to active (Trp) 4T
Active to Precharge (Tras) 7T
Active to CMD (Trd or Trcd) 4T
REF to ACT/REF to REF(Trfc) 25T
ACT(0) to ACT(1) (Trrd) 3T
Read to Precharge (Trtp) 2T
Write to Read CMD(Twtr) 1T/2T
Write Recovery Time (Twr) 4T

2. DRAM Driving: Normal
High

3. CPU PnP Setting > DRAM Frequency:
200
266
333
400
533
666
Auto(current)

Now, which of these settng I need to change to overclock my RAM?? And by how much???

Problem With CPU:
My Processor is Pentium D 2.8Ghz.
200(Bus Speed) x 14(multiplier) = 2800mhz
Now, when I slowly increase the BUS speed from 200 to 223, everything is fine. Under stress too, there is no problem. But as soon as I change the FSB to 224 or higher, my whole harddisk becomes corrupt. I need to reinstall Windows again after this. One time, even WinXP setup was not running by booting with setup CD. That time I installed win2k(it ran) and then installed XP. After that incidence, I have never OCed my CPU over 223 Bus speed.
Now, can u guess what may be causing this problem??

Thanks in advance

A:Help Needed: RAM OCing - Confused and CPU OCing - Problem

To slightly overclock your ram you'll need to set the dram timings to auto for now. As you speed up your FSB, your BIOS should automatically increase the memory timings to ensure stability. Set the dram frequency to 533 and then slowly increase the front side bus. After you have the FSB set you can then set the dram timings to manual and tighten your memory timings one at a time and then test for stability.

As far as your hard drive is concerned, it sounds like when you increased the FSB frequency your South Bridge frequency also increased. South Bridge devices (like your hard drive controller card) don't usually respond well to an increase in speed, so the card scrambled your hard drive. There should be a South Bridge lock in your BIOS. Your South Bridge should remain at 100MHz if it's a PCI-E based SB or 33MHz if it's a PCI based SB.

Now I may be completely wrong about your hard drive problem. Your processor could have over heated and caused the same thing; your memory could have spazzed and caused the same thing.

Honestly there are far to many variables to be able to help you at your current level of knowledge, and I don't know much if anything about overclocking DDR2. You need to read as much as you can about overclocking. Then start slowly and overclock you processor. Pull back and overclock your memory. Find out what will be your limiting factor (either your processor, memory or motherboard) and set up your BIOS to run as ... Read more

I did better in terms of score on 293 one than 291, but I found it much harder. Wordings of questions are difficult like the rest, but the DNS and CA scenarios were very tough to figure out. Take your time on the questions. Make sure you know exactly what they are asking for and think it through. You will not pass unless you have experience with the product and have done a lot of prep work. Read the deployment guides for PKI and DNS before writing. Do not take it lightly. I used Microsoft training kit and ucertify product for preparing and i can say its good enough.

Other than using View>Text Size, is there anything I can do that may cause the print to be darker? I know that my eyes are beginning to grow weaker but perhaps someone knows a trick for me to use or an answer. The light print seems to occur on most web pages and very bad on my ISP webmail account. My signature will tell you I am using WinXP Pro and SP2. If all pages were as clear and dark as the print I am seeing while typing this thread, I would not be asking for help. As always, TIA

Hello,

At my work, I use Now-Up-To-Date calender to keep my schedual. Different event types are color coded. Some are red, yellow, orange.

My printer (hp 4050) is a black and white printer. It has always printed all the different colors as solid black. I just reformatted my computer (XP-Pro) and reinstalled my NUTD calender, but when it prints, the yellow and orange entries are almost impossible to read.

Does anyone know what the setting is to get my printer to print it all the same shade black?

I have a x800xt agp from sapphire, and I cannot really overclock it at all.
I can get to 530 core and 590 memory, but it's at 500/500 stock and it's running at 40C. If I run it any higher, the video just shuts off. Not that whole computer, just the video. I can hit the power button and hear the HD spinning closing apps and stuff but no video. At 40C I am perplexed as to why it isn't going faster. I have a x1600pro 512mb agp also from sapphire, and at 600 core it also shuts off. At 470 memory it starts having artifacts, but I think that's just 'cause the 512mb model has crappy ram. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey guys Im just newly registered, and I have read the rules and stickeys... I was originally hoping to find a chat area but am happy to post here so long as Im in the right area xD

Anyway, I have a couple Video cards im fiddling with in my system and am curious about any firsthand experience any of you might have had OC'ing any of these bits.
I am a tech student, and quite literate but am relatively new to overclocking.
I have done my homework, reading much on the parts im using, the software (monitoring and Control)
but have only been able to get "so far" by reading or talking to tech supports incall operators xD

I've been getting some results before I started any hardware adjustments that are well, damn mind boggling, im happy to attatch reports upon request but here are some short but sweet overview of some results listed after my rig specs:

Asus P4C800 Deluxe w/P4 3.4ghz HT
2g DDR2 @ 400mhz
ThermalTake PurePower 420watt max PSU
Win Vista 32bit no Service pack(also have XP sp3, and Ubu 8.04 on other partitions but been only using vista for continuity sake)
mainly Ive been getting crazy temps on my Nvidia 7600gt agp512 (stock fan)
after much reading about others with similar setups some of the highest temps I've read about are 80-85 celcsius under load... That being said these are my temps:
54 celsius at idle(reported by rival tuner and speedfan)
95-100 celsius under load!
as far as I'm aware, it shouldn't even be able to run at that... Read more

Ok, so I've had the core 2 duo E6600 since it first came out, and Ive really been debating on whether or not to overclock it or not and I have decided to do so. I do play alot of games and would like to speed things up a bit.

I overclocked my card and it's working fine so far. However, I've only used UT2k4 to "test" it so far. I got it at 300 core and 435 memory. It's a 5200fx, I'm only gonna use it for a few more months, and I'm broke and desperate, so lets no discuss the fact that my card is a 5200fx. When I start up UT2k4 with my new settings, it works fine, but the intro takes 5 seconds before it commences. It starts with a golden nvidia circle, then a character pounds through it with a minigun starts shotting and gets blown up. Normally it just goes, but with the new settings the logo shows up, then it "freezes" for 5 seconds, and then it goes on with no artifacts. Is that a sign that I should lower the frequencies? Also, I've played about 10 games, well the first time I loaded one map I had a small artifact problem, but the second I didn't. What do I do about that?

One more question, if it runs UT2k4 with no artifacts does that mean it will work for most other games too? Is there a betta way to test it?

Thanks for your help in advance.

This is just a little experiment I'm trying. I have some spare Super Socket 7 CPUs (Pentium Pros at various speeds) that I'm attempting to squeeze the highest clock speed out of. Using the Asus board on my second comp (see profile), I can get up to a 4x multiplier and 125 FBS. However, even with slot speed locked and a RAM divider in place, when running at 83.5 Mhz FBS, I suffer from frequent restarts until I raise my VCORE to insane numbers (like 3.5 volts). Does anybody have a way I could push this processor any further?

Well to make things easier

My cpu is a 3800+ amd64, my Mobo is Gigabyte brand with nforce3 chipset and I have 2 sticks of 1gb PC3200 Ram

I've been able to take it from the default 200/12x to 203/12x but anything after that, it freezes in booting. I know it's not a temperature problem because it's watercooled and is 35C under a load, even with the little 36mhz OC

But thats a pathetic OC, and I had planned to at least hit 2500

Anyone know why it could be doing this? After reading a few faqs and such, Ive seen than ram fsb can limit you if it's not fast enough, I've read that increasing the voltage may let you increase the fsb more, and I've seen some stuff about changing Ram timings - but I really dont know much about changing ram settings

Any advice here?

A:Having trouble OCing my 3800+

If you use a ram divider, then your ram speed won't matter. It should be a setting like setting your ram speed from 200mhz to like 166(or another speed between 166 and 200). Have you decreased your htt multi? Move it down one notch(if it's 5x to 4x, or if 4x to 3x). I'd think you should be able to get much more oc than that even with no more vcore. Do you have your agp/pci locked, so they don't increase with the fsb speed? It can be called agp/pci asynchronous in the bios, among other things.

now i've tried with EasyTune5 gigabytes OCing software... soon as i click go to make the changes my PC crashes.

what's wrong?

A:Problem with OCing (1st time)

Firstly, alot of times the in OS OCing software is unreliable and is prone to cause crashes. Ive had a few my self (actually they were more freezes than crashes).

Have you tried smaller increments, like instead of 1066->1333 try 1066-.1200?

Also i remember my bios had a glitch were if i set the ram and fsb to "linked" mode, i crash. Try resetting to default and chageing just the fsb to 1200 or 300.
Im not sure whats wrong but thats a big power supply...what graphics card are you running?

MSI k7t Turbo2 motherboard
512MB pc133 ECC RAM
300 WATT power supply
9200SE
dvd combo drive

The processor never goes above 40 degrees.

So today I was changing my AGP arperture size down to 64MB, when I noticed something in my BIOS called something like "Core voltage and clock speeds" and I went in. It turns out all my Overclocking thingies were unlocked. I figured that there could be no harm, and googled my how overclockable my processor is.

It turns out you can raise the FSB from 133 to 143, and I did this, attaining a speed of 1920 something, from 1800. I was very satisfied with this, and I left it be. It turns out that I didn't change the core voltage, however, so I was still at 1.65, whereas most guides suggest 1.7.

So I'm playing this game, and it just crashes. I figure it's a fluke, and go on firefox. It crashes. I know what has happened, so I boot back into BIOS, and change the FSB down to 135. Everything is fine, and I have a mild overclock of 20 megahertz (big whoop).

Then I stumble across the OCing guide again, and I realize that I was supposed to bump the voltage up to 1.7. So I do this, and raise the FSB to 143. I boot back into Windows, play my game, and it crashes. So I figure "no big deal, I'll just make the core voltage 1.725" LIKE AN IDIOT.

So now whenever I turn my computer on, I can hear it running, but nothing displays on the monitor. What shou... Read more

Does this mean I can raise my htt to 250 without testing in increments? And if i do have to test in increments, how many mhz increments and how long would i run stress prime for during the increments? What are acceptable regular temps for an OC? If you are not 100% sure of what you are doing then overclocking isn't a good idea. Especially if you only have stock cooling.

A:Solved: Problems with OCing GPU

Integrated graphics and it's a Dell, you may indeed be out of luck. Overclocking integrated graphics is just a bad idea in general; you risk overheating as the cooling solutions are not adequate which can result in motherboard failure. And it's a Dell, Dells are not overclocking/modding friendly. Lastly the performance gain from overclocking basic integrated graphics will result in little gains that won't make a significant difference in gaming.

My question is.. if I OC it to, say, 2.5ghz and runs stable, would it be at the same speeds as an A64 4000+ since they have the same L1+L2 cache, which would basically make my A64 3200+ have a performance rating equivalent to that of an Intel 4ghz?

Just curious.. I've always assumed it worked this way but I'm no tech guy so I want to just get it clear.

Hi people. Can anyone help me with this? I'm trying to overclock my E4400 Core2 which supposedly overclocks very well. I'm running one of ASROCKs DUAL MOBOS (the hybrids with AGP/PCIe support.) Problem is whenever I increase the mobos system clock and get the processor to 2.5Ghz (runs at 2 standard) I get freaking artifacts in my games and they randomly Crash to desktop. Oblivion especially doesnt even get to the title screen. Now these games work absolutely fine when the CPU is at standard BUS its only when I increase it is there any problem! This is BEFORE even touching the graphics card. Rest of the time the computer is perfectly stable except graphics-wise.

My system:

Standard clock is 200 with a 10x multiplier. if I increase it to 220 I get SOME graphical instability and at 250 lots of instability. Does anyone have any idea why the increased FSB is having this effect on games? I know its not the temperatures because I monitor them regularly in Everest and the graphics card isnt really running any hotter than normal and is idling at around 42 up to 47-49 when I can get it under load. Just because your cpu temps is low doesnt mean that you dont need to increase stock voltages. And every mobo is different. I'm sure that many people that oc'd that cpu didnt have the exact same setup as you. Increase the voltages, then run a stability test, and get back to us.

I am trying to overclock my P4 2.4.
I can get it up to 2.69 with no problems, but after that, I get errors and such.
How can I find out what voltage it's running on at the moment, cause all it says is "default" then it has a list of the different indevidual voltages I can choose.
PLease aid me!
Thanks

So i have increased the FSB from 200 to around 225 or so and i am at 3.6GHZ atm (3.2GHZ stock). Everything boots up fine and played SC2 with maxed out settings for 15mins in a semi-huge battle and these are the temps. i got.

(SpeedFan)
---------MAX-------AVG-------MIN
GPU: 53.0C------47C-------24C
Temp1: 50C------39C-------36c
Core: 47.5C------40C-------27C
Core: 53.0C------47C-------23C

That's only 15mins of gameplay so i guess over 4hrs it will go up... So not sure if i should continue OCing to around 3.8 or even 4.0 or stop here.... Don't wanna damage my CPU or anything.... So yeh just wondering if i should keep OCing until it becomes unstable or keep it like it is.

Also i haven't increased anything else apart from FSB Frequency so not sure if i should increase voltage and stuff or not...

PS:

Just wondering i am using GTX460 1GB OC edition and i would like to know how do i turn on DX.11 since i would like to see if its big improvement in FPS and visually. When i ran dxdiag in CMD it says its 9.0.c atm...

Also been reading through OC guides kind of so learning lot ^^ Need to learn more before i go off do CCNA next year in Sixth Form

Thanks in advance ) (I am very knew at this hehe)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but XP does not support DX11, or 10/10.1 for that matter. You will have to get windows 7to use DX11.

Thats up to you and if and when you become satisfied with the performance. A couple things though.
1) becoming 'unstable' whilst finding the furthest you can push it, is an intregal part of OC'ing. You should expect to lock up, freeze, BS, etc many times during the OC'ing process.
2) you may need to (more likely than not) need to add voltage to other areas once past 3.6-3.7 GHz on an AMD system ie north bridge, memory,HT etc.
3) watch the temps always! If you do not have an aftermarket heatsink/fan, now would be a good time to do that.
5) the absolute upper limit on Vcore is 1.55v without exotic cooling. I can already tell from your temps that anywhere near that will get over the thermal limit.

This is a good guide for AMD CPU's and voltage levels and limits, you might try AOD as well before you enter OC values into the bios.

I messed up my computer trying to OC it, looks like nothing permanent,
but I got the dreaded BOOTMGR not found dealio. I already fixed that and am
running again; however, I was hoping to get some advice on what I can touch and
what I should just leave alone. My specs are in my .sig.

My OC options are:
External clock (MHz)
PCIE clock (MHz)
CPU Voltage (V)
DDR RAM Voltage (V)

My stock system is a 4400+ X2 (2222) MHz, stock settings
200 MHz, 100 MHz, 1.35V, 2.60V (in order, from above)

I got it stable to:
235 MHz, 115 MHz, 1.45V, 2.8V for a CPU speed of 2585MHz instead of 2222MHz.

When I went a little higher: 245/120/1.475/2.8 the system gave me the BOOTMGR is missing error.

My questions: Is it ok to change all 4 at once, or do you usually change one thing at a time upping the ante' gradually until it freezes, then go on to the next? Is there something that's smarter to OC than the others?

TIA

A:New to OCing, trying to breathe some life into a 4400X2

You remember to lower the DRAM clock? If not that would be why it becomes unstable, as without lowering it the ram is running at the same speed as the CPU/FSB (1:1). Unless you have some really good PC3200, I doubt that it will run at 235. It doesn't show in the manual what options are available (frequency or divider), but lower the DRAM clock down to 133 or so. If it is dividers (1:1, 2:3, 5:4, etc), post what is available.

Also is that 2x2Gb or 4x1 GB sticks? If it is 4x1 make sure that the command rate (should happen by default, but still check) is set to 2T and not 1T. It is a design limitation on the memory controller when all ram slots are populated.

Edit: Couple of things I forgot,

1. Lower the HTT to 3. Try to keep it around 1000 or less; lower won't affect anything, but too high will definitely make it unstable.

2. DO NOT up the PCI-E speed, lock/leave it at 100 MHz.

here is a nifty little utility for playing around with the numbers without actually changing anything,

A64Calc.rar - FileFront.com

With it here are your settings at stock speed,

and with the settings you used,

sorry to say but there is no way that it will run stable at all with those settings, not surprised you had trouble.

Try to keep the memory clock close to or under 200; better is to set it as low as it will go until you get the CPU as high as it will stably go, that way it takes the ram out of the picture (and don't forget to lower the HTT multi accordingly as well). Once you have fou... Read more

A:Crashing in games after OCing: what should I change?

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

Please attach the DMP files to your next post not to post one.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

Hey guys i know that there is already a thread that regards this topic but I wanted to start a new one givin my situation.

I just got done reading the article on overclocking the Intel PD 805 to 4.10 speeds. http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores/index.html

I'm pumped but I have to get a new motherboard thats supports this proc and the overclocking im going to be doing. Also new DDR2 memory (2 gigs). I got a little confused with the tomshardware article when they talked about what memory and mobo would be ideal for at least overclocking to 3.8 (That's what im shooting for with a ZALMAN CNPS9500)

I'm trying to fit the Mobo, the RAM and the Zalmen fan into a rough $300 budget.

I just wanted to make sure that this mobo and mem (I'm not sure if I chose the right speeds for the RAM) are ok for overclocking this cpu to at least 3.8

Yes Iv read the sticky and Iv read all sorts of peoples experiences and guides on this. The new drivers do not work ocing my card. This is my first time trying to oc. If I move the memory or core at all Ill crash in 3dmark01. Others have had this problem and the 76.44 nvidea driver has worked for them. I just tried it and it didn't work for me. Does anyone know a proper driver or better program than riva tuner I can use to oc my card? I only have pci slots btw. Yeah I know I can get a new mobo n card n all that. I know you can clock this card, I followed the steps, I must be having the same problem a lot of other people are having. Or heck if anyone knows how to unlock the other 4 pipelines that would be nice. But the only thing close to being able to unlock this card that Iv read is a theory on flashing the bios, which I have no idea how to do, but will do If told how and its not to hard or dangerous. Out of the 4-5 hours I spent reading forums only 2 sources said its possible. Neither told exactly how 1 was wikipedia and the other was a 2 yr old post.

This system will actually be for my mother who has an eBay store which means loading pictures, etc. She also does web surfing plus Windows Office applications but as the tile says there certainly won't be any gaming or overclocking involved.

I have been looking into AM2 boards simply because you can decent AM2 dual core chips at reasonable cost. I must admit I am less than impressed with the AM2 offerings but I am sure someone here can enlighten me otherwise.

I am not adverse to Intel either, but I haven't kept with either the boards or chips until just recently thus I certainly could use direction.

So there is no need for the cutting edge, just something good and solid for the years to come.

Thanks and if you want to give your cpus suggestions as well I would cerataqinly appreciate it.

Oh, yes, I am trying to keep this system between $500 - $700 which is not including the OS; she already has monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

A:Need Mobo Advice for Non-OCing, Non-Gaming System

Intel, FoxConn, Gigabyte, Abit, and some ASUS

If you are not looking for a gaming board, there is no reason not to included AMD, which are as reliable as any, and much lower in price.

Look at the board reviews at www.tomshardware.com and www.anandtech.com

Shop for combo deals of motherboard and processor from www.newegg.com, www.zipzoomfly.com, www.tigerdirect.com, www.directron.com and other such sites. You can save a great deal, if you know your boards from reading reviews... but if you have never built one before, a plain stock board of a good name such as the above are more important. Some of the Combos are returns that are other people's mistakes.

Don't forget that a decent power supply and CPU fan/heatsink, as well as first tier memory are just as important... and a Seagate or Western Digital hard drive.

Be sure the board and the hard drive are both SATA or both PATA.

if any of you know the right voltage, Timings, or any other clocks on my other components that i should change to get to 2000, please explain and ask others if they'd know as well.
I know if you say "whats the use for Ocing that DDR3? you wont get any performance benefits due to the bottlenecking of the old and ancient FSB bandwidth.". I am only doing this to see if i can actually reach 2000 mhz without having a memory error/BSOD that screws up my system.

I've finally got around to overclocking my i5 2500k automatically within the BIOS, but ever since, it's been giving me BSODs at random intervals. There is no set trigger for it that I can tell (it's happened during gaming and during random internet browsing). As of right now, I've set everything back to stock levels. I have an ASUS MIVE-Z, and I was using the auto-OC settings within the BIOS (CPU to 4.6GHz, and RAM set on XMP profile where it runs at 2133MHz).

Just to note, I had put my RAM at those levels with NO problems before, so I suspect it has something to do with the CPU. I've also had NO problems with my CPU at it's current level (3.7GHz) EVER, so that just helps solidify that the issue is caused by the bump from 3.7 to 4.6.

I did a little looking around on the web, and I saw a few posts that seem to say it might be a CPU voltage related issue. Also, this isn't the first BSOD I've had, and I compared the output of all the dumps I had via BlueScreenView. All of the related files for each crashdump are identical, so it's definitely the same problem over and over.

This system is about 4-5~ months old, and the OS installation is not even a day old, I had just done a full reloading of the OS last night.

Just a note, the attached tests/reads were with my CPU/RAM at stock/auto levels, NOT the overclocked levels at which my system was BSODing.

Hello Plazzed,

* Is your "new" computer under Warranty?

* A stop error of 0x124 is a general hardware error.

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Some generic advice.

If you are overclocking STOP. return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

A:Help OCing Q8400 on Asus P5NE-SLI mobo

I have a Q8200, which is basically the same CPU with a lower clock multiplier, running at a stable 3.01GHz. With your higher multiplier, you should be able to get a higher overclock. However, you might be limited by your RAM to 3.2GHz (400 X 8) unless you overclock it too. By the way, you would probably need to increase the CPU voltage to achieve that overclock. And it would be advisable to do this all in the BIOS.

And yes, any PCI-express graphics card should work on your mobo.

Vista has been available for the past 14 months and DX10 for the same period. In fact, SP1 for Vista has also been released a few weeks ago. There will come a time when game makers stop making games for older versions of DirectX, but this is no different to what it has always been. If you do want to upgrade to Vista, I would advise you to go for a new system that supports the PCI Express standard for graphics as opposed to the older AGP standard. At the moment, I am using a GeForce 7600GT PCI Express graphics card and, although it doesn't support DX10, it is giving me good enough performance for what I use my machine for. A graphics card update, however, might be on the cards at a later date.

I am asking again for a friend again, that has 256 mb pc133 double sided ram, already installed in his machine, now he has a choice of buying another 256 mb pc 133 double sided ram for $107 or for an extra $30 he can have the 512 mb.
I have been told that with a pent 3 - 512mb of ram is enough and any extra over 512 mb is really only a waste of money, i would like to hear your opinions.
Thanks for any advise

I am trying to figure out if picking up another GPU to run in SLI is really going to be worth my time and/or money.
While playing video games I usually run capturing software in the background. I usually switch between Fraps and Bandicam. When I start to record in game footage my FPS will usually drop down to the low 20's. When I am not recording I average 35-55 fps. My question is, if I decide to run another card in SLI will I notice FPS improvements during normal gaming sessions and/or when I'm capturing footage.
By the way I am running at 1920x1080p resolution.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:SLI Really Worth It?

Depending on the game/SLI profile driver support - yes, you will notice a definite improvement.

There will be a few games here and there that won't benefit that much, or will cause glitches due to lack of game engine/driver support - but for those that are supported your framerate will increase and allow you to potentially run at even higher settings.

SLI (or multiple cards in general) are not glitch free and can cause headaches of their own; but when it works - it works well. If you've already got a 550ti, it would be worthwhile grabbing another one.

As for recording, you should see some improvements in certain titles. Fraps pretty much halves your framerate when recoding as is (as you've noticed) so an increased framerate will also result in smoother recording.

Hello, this is my first post here at Vista Forums. Before I begin let me post my specs.

OS: Vista Home Premium x64
CPU: Intel Quad Core 2.66GHz
RAM: 4GB Dual Channel
GPU: eVGA 280gtx
MoBo: eVGA 750i
PS: 750watt

I was wondering if you guys think it would be wise to run an additional 280gtx? It seems like it wouldn't be with how fast new graphics cards are being churned out. Thanks in advance.

i do have 4 gig of ram currently in it but its only seeing 3.25
do you think think that its worth it
the computer is still good and can run all of the modern games such as BCBF2
i am running a gt220 graphics card at the moment but will upgrade that in time
what do you think?

A:is it worth it

you have not said why -
why do you want to upgrade ? - if its doing all the things you need

i do have 4 gig of ram currently in it but its only seeing 3.25Click to expand...

This is quite normal and a limitation due to 32bit software. so the only upgrades that will fix that is to use 64bit software
And then the question is what programs do you want to run that will use a lot of memory

Your safest bet would be to search online for your items second hand and see what they go for, unfortunatly I dont believe you will get to much for it. The main problem with pc is also the beat thing, they change every day, so you can have the best today and in a month it may be replaced by something new. So Id say go on ebay or a similar site where your from and see what others are asking, youl get the best idea that way.

I am currently running Windows XP Pro 64 BIT but am having difficulty obtaining drivers that will work with some of my hardware (printers/scanners etc).
My question is really what difference would it make if I was to revert back to the old XP pro (32 - bit)?
I am only currently running 2GB of RAM so no issues with the OS not recognising it but would I notice any difference performance wise?

A:Is XP pro 64-bit worth it?

You will hardly see any difference except if you make extensive use of some applications, generally professional applications, that are customized to work better on XP 64bits.

On the other hand you'll have less compatibility issues with XP 32bits if you're a regular user, and some apps will simply not work correctly on the 64bits version.

If you're not in any kind of cpu intensive apps, like video encoding or 3D studio apps for instance, go with 32bits. You can find lots of benchmarks or general conversations about this if you search XP32 vs XP64 in google, that should give you an idea of the difference in performances.

As i understand, Windows vista/7 are the way to go, especialy if you got a dual-core processor. My system easily supports vista, but i would like to ask: if I am usually using 32bit software, is it worth going on vista?

A:Is it worth?

If I were you, I would skip Vista. Windows 7 is just better in many ways. You can download the Windows 7 RC for free. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win.../download.aspx
And then "upgrade" to the final Windows 7 later. If your computer can handle Vista, then it can handle Windows 7 better. You could either dual-boot your current XP install with win7 or just do a clean install. Thats up to you. (also, they do have the 32-bit version of Win7)

I bought 4GB memory, but it doesn't work with my 32-bit, apparently because 32-bit can read up to 3/3.5GB. However, I want to use my 4GB to the full, whereas now I'm forced to using only 2GB! Is it worth it, then, changing from 32-bit to 64-bit? I also heard that many programs that are compatible with 32-bit aren't with 64-bit, as 64-bit is more for business and companies with big requirement of memory. I don't want to lose my data and programs just because of that. What are the pros and cons for a move from 32-bit to 64-bit?

A:is 64 bit xp worth it?

No, there are too many compatibility issues and there's really no benefit if you're not running 64-bit apps. There could be a security benefit, but you'll need to download all new drivers and it's not worth it.

I ran across several (36) Dell Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit reinstallation DVD packets with manuals in boxes that some Dell laptops were shipped in. I asked the IT guy who ordered the laptops if the DVDs were being thrown away, could I have them to sell. He had no use for them and said yes. Now my question is, are they worth selling? What do they usually sell for? I want to know if it is worth my time and effort? Thank you for any help and comments.

A:Is It Worth It?

I don't see why the DVDs would be of "no use" to him. They could be used to fix problems that only the Recovery DVD would fix.

Anyway, I don't know if those DVDs are for re-sale. I'd imagine they're not.

And depending on if their branded by Dell or not, they may just be for those specific laptops.

4 gigs DDR2 ram
ATI Sapphire Radeon 4830 512 mb 256 bit

I'm running 64 bit Vista Ultimate, and I was thinking of switching back to 32 bit Vista or XP. My question is would there be a huge performance gap as the 32 bit Vista/XP only detects 3.25 gigs of ram.

I'm mainly switching back for programming reasons (Dev++ and Java SDK doesn't work on 64 bit, or at least for me) But I am also thinking of playing a few games.

Thanks.

Lack of Dev C++ was a real bummer for me when I switched to x64. Most games require .5 - 1 gb or ram, so you should be fine. Go to Can You Run It? to test your games.

Hi, my system has a pretty good boot up time atm with a normal HDD, ranging from 17 to 20 secs from "starting windows" but i think it's bottlenecking my quadcore, i think i can get more out of my system, start up 15secs all the time and programs like photoshop cs5 to open allmost instant. I have seen all the vids on youtube, the intel x25m g2 mostly, i am aiming to get the 80gb version as they are very expensive and this is what i can afford, and will pay for a hard drive.

Questions:

Because i am only getting an 80gb (normal HDD will be used for data, ssd for os and aps) will it slow down because it will be about 35-40% full when i have put the aps and os on it?

What do i have to do to keep it's speed? i heard of trim? Does this work good and how is your ssd overtime?

Thanks for your advice.

When the CEO of Microsoft admits Vista is a "work in progress" you know that it will have problems lol, that sounds like a pretty serious rig, I was thinking of upgrading, but realized a new OS will more than likely be out around 2010, so I may wait, Your rig could probably handle those games running on good settings, but if you want the extra bang and have some cash to burn, may as well go for it lol

Hey guys. First off thanks for all the advice. I saw these forums and it has helped me get a good idea of my first computer I want. That being said, I have a friend that's willing to sell me his computer that he built recently and I just wanted to ask you guys if you thought it would be worth it?

He wants between $600-700 for the computer and these are the stats:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6400+, 3.21 GHZ
4gb DDR3 Patriot RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS X2
Corsair 750 watt power supply
500GB Seagate HardDrive SATA 7200 rpm

Also comes with 22" HD Acer monitor, G15 Keyboard, and 5.1 Creative Sound system.

I'm trying to avoid using websites to buy parts and put the computer together, so I trust my friend since he's done this several times. Would you guys say that this would be a good buy for around $700?

My first post-pls forgive it it is in the wrong forum!

I have a Gateway GT5674. Yes, it is a bit old! Question: Is it worth upgrading or should I just buy a new tower!

AMD Phenom 9500 64 bit Quad Core Prcessor
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE chipset
3 GB DDR2 memory (can go to 4 GB)
500 GB SATA II hard drive (can add another hard drive)
300 watt power supply
NVIDIA GForce 6150SE Video Card
Vista Home Premium 32 Bit

It came with one video monitor port.

What I really want is to run two monitors (at least one DVI), and maybe increase the RAM.

My son likes minecraft, I run normal wp programs and Adobe programs such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. My husband loaded all of our CD's (8K songs!) into iTunes but keeps it on a removable hard drive.

Is a computer this old (2006) worth paying for a video card, power supply, and RAM upgrade or should I just cut bait and go for something new. I use it 6-8+ hours a day for both work, school, and graphics. My son is on it the rest of the time for Minecraft. (Recently loaded the Aether for him).

I could probably budget $400-$700 for a new tower...and I am a sucker for fast processing (when I can get it).

So sorry if this is not an appropriate question for you guys...just don't know who else to ask!!!! Thank you so much for any help/advice...suggestions for a new tower....I will send homemade cookies!

A:Is this PC worth £200?

I think that is high for 6 year old tech. It is near the end of it's life span anyway.

Hi folks,
I'm in the process of updating my new build with a couple of bits and I am trying to get my base score in the Windows Experience Index as high as I possibly can. 7.9 in all sections (I hope).
My processor is 7.6 clocked at 3.7Ghz (goes to 7.8 at 4.0Ghz)
Memory is at 7.9
Graphics is at 7.8
Gaming Graphics is at 7.8
And Primary Hard Disk is only 5.9

Would an SSD set as the primary drive improve on the 5.9 score ?
&
What size and brand SSD's are the most reliable ?

I think it could reach 7.9 in 4 out of 5 sections.
My processor will be overclocked to about 4.3Ghz and I will be getting another HD6870 Graphics card in a week or so.
I have just got a Corsair water cooler but not yet installed it. I am also upgrading my PSU to a 750watt unit so I can run both graphics cards in CrossfireX mode.

And would an SSD be able to have games installed on it ? cos they would be super fast.

Thanx for any and all help in advance.

Since it was released I have been desperately wanting to be liberated from Me and upgrade to Xpee. There are a few slight things that held me back (a few grudes and hassels) but I think I will do it now... especially now since it has had over 5 months of consumer testing for security issues and patches to be released. What my question is... in the opinion of anyone who would like to give me their two cents... is Xp worth a clean install on a hard drive that is 45 GB full? Xp Pro upgrade is last I checked... somewhere around $200 or maybe it was more, I don't really remember. I can get the full version from the guy I bought my motherboard and processor from (he told me I could have the option to come back to him for it after it was released) for $80... but he has no upgrade version to offer me, as it is for new computers. I am planning to buy that from him, but I have 45 GB used on my HD now, and it will be a hassel moving everything over to Xpee without the upgrade. Does anyone think the hassel is worth the benefits of a clean install and saving a lot of money, or should I just fork over the $$ and buy the upgrade? There is only about 20 GB or less of program files that will need to be reinstalled on Xp... the rest of the drive is data... but still needs to be backed up. What would my least expensive and most effective backup solution be for saving the data?

hey guys, i have a 5 year old HDD here i'm thinking of upgrading. i did a scan on it and it shows up as healthy. no bad sectors etc. i'm strapped for cash so i dont want to upgrade it right now.

do you guys think it would be okay to use for a little while? it's just that it's so old i don't want it to die on me. i'll only probably use it for a few weeks before upgrading.

what do you guys think?

thanks

A:Worth getting a new HDD?

You can't predict reliability. I have systems more than 5 years old with their original drives that run perfectly, and I have had I DOA drives.

If it works fine, your probably OK for a few weeks, maybe months... who knows.

Just ALWAYS have backups of the information you need/ love.

Hello there. I have curently built a computer to sell and I am wondering what you guys think I should sell it for. It has the following parts.

Case: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/174463
Motherboard and CPU: ASUS Intel Atom 1.6Ghz Dual Core
RAM: 2GB Crucial 800Mhz
Hard Drive: 500GB SATA 16mb cache
Disk: LiteOn 22x DVD-RW

Thanking In advance Jack-O-Bytes

A:How much would you think this is worth

Hey, Jack...can you explain the Atom processor for me? How fast is it compared to a pentium 4? I was looking at the benchmarks at passmark, and I was a little stunned at how low they are. How can this be for a dual core? I've been looking at similar systems, but I don't think the Atom processor is what I'm looking for if the benchmarks are accurate. I will probably spend a little more for an all in one with true duo core speed. I am, however, very curious how the Atom performs. What would you say are the best uses for the machine?

I like this case you have...very nice. Sorry I am not expert enough to help you with value. I would guess on the higest end of p4 value + some for the nice small size + some because it's relatively new=>$400. The only drawback could be the sound aspect. I can't tell where your sound comes from from the specs on ebuyer...

I was considering putting another chunk of RAM in my system but am finding some slightly mixed reviews on if it is really worth it or not. I do a fair bit of gaming (MMOs, FPS etc).

Currently running the following:
Core i5 680
4Gb DDR3 (2x 2G)
GTX460 1Gb Graphics
1Tb Sata HDD
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

What are peoples thoughts, would it improve overall performance or would the impact be negligable?

A:Worth getting more RAM?

Well, if you play very large graphic loading games locally, you might notice smoother transitions between level loading, at least for some older games or less well written ones that don't handle that transitions as well as the better written ones.

For MMOs you probably wouldn't see any difference at all since it will take more time to load the communication stub over the Internet than the local graphics level install being called.

So in some instances it will help but if you're looking for a more constant performance gain, that's not likely.

Hi,

Im just generally really fed up with this mess of a hard drive. Theres various partitions and OSs and corrupt segments and its full of crap and I just really want to back up some media then just format the bugger and start afresh.

However, I figure, if I'm going to starting afresh, why not fix a few things which have been bugging me.
First of all, I'd install a 64bit OS instead of 32.
Second, with Christmas coming up and all Im considering buying a SSD.
Now Im not expert in hardware, but I think that at the moment its my HDD which is the limiting factor for my PC and that using a SSD would amend that. Obviously I'd still use this drive for storage, but I'd install my primary OS and core programs on the SSD.

So how much do SSDs actually aid performance? Would I see a noticeable difference in overall performance?
And how do I know what to go for with regards to a SSD? Im hoping to spend between £100-200, but preferable on the lower end, so something around or under £150 would be nice.
Have you got any suggestions or advice?
Thanks alot,
Gavin

I have a bit of a question.....Im upgrading right now to a XP2100, and purchased 512MBs of pc133 to go with that. It cost me $40. 512MB of DDR is 3x that cost....but how will it affect my performance? Like a great deal, to where its notice able when using my PC, or a fair bit where I'll get 5+FPS than using my PC133. I never really thought DDR was worth it, just because its 2x as much when buying a 256MB stick, and 3x as much when buying a 512MB stick...It just doesnt seem like the memory clock being 2x faster is really going to help...its ram, not a CPU. I know it plays a key part to diliver data to the cpu, but still, would pc133 be just fine? Im starting to regret getting the 512mb pc133, and thinking I should have got 256MB DDR for $20 more...

<PS>
This is my 100th Post!

A:DDR worth it?¿?

I didn't upgrade to DDR until late november this year for the same reasons you state...
But now that I've upgraded I've noticed quite the difference... Not just in games, but in windows too...
It "feels" more responsive...

If I were you, I'd go for 256mb DDR now, and get another 256mb later...
