To speed up mouse scrolling speed in Firefox in Linux VirtualBox

Q: To speed up mouse scrolling speed in Firefox in Linux VirtualBox

I was told by somebody here with VIP badges that I should not post here how to make Firefox run more smoothly in a Virtual Machine in Linux. It should be in a Linux forum. So I moved it there.

Hi All!
I have a problem with the scrolling speed of my mouse. It's a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0A model 1008. It seems to scroll more than the top 3 lines at a time, although the setting is at 1 line.
Another thing is that when I scroll down, the page seems to return to a previous position, so it momentarily scrolls back a bit.
Any ideas?
Looking forward to your enlightenment.
Cheerio pallies.

I have a very strange and annoying problem. I bought a new mouse A4tech Bloody V7, I installed the software and everything seemed to be working fine. Then my PC went into the sleep mode and when I woke it up I realised that the mouse scroll doesn't work. I restarted the PC and it was ok again.. I thought it was a one time bug but then I found out that everytime the PC goes into the sleep mode (often) the mouse stops scrolling.
Now, the mouse software has some very specific features. There are 2 cores that you can switch between and each of them gives the mouse some new features. (such as specific button features, etc.). When the mouse stops working and I open the software and change the core (from 1 to 2, or the other way round) the cores "reset" and the mouse starts working again. So you might think that the software is bad. Well, it isn't.
I deleted the software to see if the issue still persists and it does. Regardless of the SW being installed or not the mouse gets bugged after the PC goes into the sleep mode. So I tried to test it on my notebook to see if the mouse if faulty. But it works perfectly fine on my ntb. With the SW not being installed on my ntb the mouse works, even after sleep mode. With the software installed it works too. But as soon as I plug it to my PC it gets crappy. But this would still be sufferable, but now (since a few days back) whenever I boot the PC after it has been turned off, the mouse DPI settings are set to the minimum, which ... Read more

I have an eee pc with xp on it. I usually like using firefox but for some reason the touch pad (two finger scrolling) is horrible with it. The page barely moves at all. I tried opera and while the page scrolls, it goes too fast. Simply twitching my fingers a little can cause a whole page to go by (compounded by the eee pc's small vertical screen size).

I was wondering if there is a solution to either of these problems. Ive tried fiddling with the touchpad settings (elantech touchpad drivers) but they really dont help. Scrolling regular windows for file browsing is excellent so I was wondering if there's a setting in either of the browsers for this. I wont use IE btw.

I moved into a city that has 1gbps fiber and I got it. I set my computer up to run Ubuntu or Windows 7 in the Ubuntu OS I have full speed, like 980mbps but in Windows I can only get around 370mbps, they informed me that it was a know issue which is why they carry around laptops with Ubuntu instead of windows to troubleshoot there system. Anyone have any clue on this, I cant even imagine where to start looking for the setting or fix. Thanks

1gbps is fantastic. I suspect the Windows problem is a driver problem. Did you check the Windows 10TP. Maybe they fixed it. But then, the really big chunks you can always download with Ubuntu. I envy you, LOL.

Hello. Happy Holidays!
I have a question regarding Mozilla Firefox 2. I notice when I click on the Firefox icon (whether in my Quick Launch Bar, my Start Menu Shortcuts listing, or on the desktop), it can take up to 15 to 20 seconds for the application to open. Now, I have heard that installed extensions can slow it down which makes sense. I have installed 35 of them as add-ons. However, I have disabled (NOTE: NOT un-installed) all, but 11 to still run. The ones running are: Adblock Filterset. G Updater, Adblock Plus, Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper, Ask Toolbar for Firefox, Forecastfox Enhanced, Locator, Mouse Gestures, Speed Dial, Split Browser, Test size toolbar, and WOT. I find these still useful. Now, when I say Firefox is slow to load, I do not mean the loading of the web sites, I mean the loading of the Firefox 2 application to come up on the desktop. I have seen a lot information on the web about increasing the speed of loading of web sites by going into about:config & about:cache and changing things like the pipelining and adding a new integer, etc. ...and even changing the memory cache size to a bigger size. Now, this is not going to have any impact on how fast Firefox 2 application will load. ...or will it? (It only affects the web sites speed for loading up, right?!?) I also notice the first time after a reboot/restart of the system, it can take up to 30-40 seconds to load Firefox 2. Then after I close the Firefox window and reopen it at a later time, it ... A:Need Solution to Speed Up Firefox 2 Application for Loading, NOT URL Speed Up.

Hi, welcome to TSF

Firefox has always been slow to open compared to IE, because IE is so deeply integrated into the Windows operating system and has most of its components loaded when you boot into Windows.

The about:config tweaks you mention affect various aspects of how Firefox loads pages, but as far as I'm aware they can't improve the program's loading time.

Try creating a new profile with no addons or themes, then reboot the computer and load Firefox with this new profile to see how its start time compares to your normal profile with all its extras.

Two-button Mouse with scrolling wheel ... name's wore off Mouse, and don't have box, but it is a PS/2 compatible-type that plugs into the USB port.

The scrolling, no matter what program I use, or on the net, has became slow and jerky -- I can spin the wheel 5 or 6 times (often more) and the text will move up or down 1 or 2 lines.

Anyway, does W98SE have a setting of some type that handles wheel mouse speed, or is the Mouse just getting ready to quit? Its about 2 years old.

The only issue that I have with it at the moment is the touchpad scroll speed as I feel it is too slow for my liking. I can't seem the find the touchpad settings in the control panel, nor can I find any relevant drivers for the model that I have.
Is there a way to increase the scroll speed?

Hi guys

There is one thing that has annoyed me for a long time in XP.
Lets say I have a folder with 277 files and I want to remove the first 95 files. My window shows only 57 files.I start by marking the files with left or right mouse button. Everything is ok until I come to the edge of the window. Suddenly the scrolling speed to mark the files is very high. This make it almost impossible to mark only the files I want to remove. Whats normaly happens is that I suddenly end up with over 150 files marked before I manage to stop the scrolling.

I hope there is a solution to this annoying problem. I will be gratefull for any help.

I push my system hard, and have the hardware to handle it (for example, 24G memory.)

From time to time, I'll have an enormous amount of windows open. Right now, I have about 100 chrome windows open, with multiple tabs on each.

Once there are more windows open than Windows can display vertically on my 1050px height monitor, it shows an up arrow at the top of the list it can display, and a bottom arrow at the bottom of the list it can display.

If I hover over either of these arrows, it scrolls at about 3-4 windows per second, which can take forever to scroll to the bottom of the list (which is where the most recently opened windows appear.)

Besides learning how to close windows when I'm done with them, rather than on an every couple days basis, how can I switch more efficiently?

Sometimes ALT+TAB is a good alternative, and sometimes it isn't.

Can I decrease the delay between scroll, so the window would scroll faster? I have a 1680x1050 monitor, not a 560x1050 monitor -- can I have Windows display three columns of lists?

A:Speed up scrolling on Windows taskbar's open window titles

Excellent question, for which I too would love to find an answer.

Also, changing or diminishing the height or space occupied by each open window/line that is stacked on top of or out of the taskbar would be fantastic, along with changing the font perhaps.

When comparing speeds, remember to divide your speedtest result by 8. 0.89 mbps is around 101KBps.

Download speeds depend on many factors, inclduing the modem/router, traffic through your ISP at the time, and the type of download, just to name a couple.

What type of download is it? Are they torrents? These can often be slow.

Are downloads slow from everywhere?

You mentioned video buffering; Do you have downloads going at the same time that you are trying to view a video? Are there other people sharing your connection (eg other family members)?

You didn't say if you had tried rebooting the router/modem, or if you had been in contact with your ISP. These would be among the first things to try.

As you haven't stated what you have tried, I'm going to assume none of the following have been tried. Apologies if you have tried/tested the following.

If you plug a phone into the same wall socket at your modem do hear any noise/static or is is sound quality very poor or low... Read more

I recently installed the latest version of Firefox. Upon using it, I found out that vertical scrolling using the mouse wheel does not work. It works in IE and any other program I use.

I have the latest drivers installed, and have had no problems with the mouse. I went into Firefox's Tools>Options>Advanced and switched the mouse options around a bit, but it still doesn't work.

It's getting very annoying and makes using Firefox nearly unbearable. I'd appreciate any help.

I even got it right now when I tried to scroll down a tiny bit to this text box. I scroll all the time with the mouse wheel, probably around 90% of the time, and it's very frustrating when it actually doesn't do anything. I've had times where I've just sat there and scrolled for about an entire second, and the page just sits there. I never had this problem in XP, and it is not the mouse going bad, or the mouse wheel going bad. It doesn't matter if I "spin" the wheel as fast as I can, or just move it one groove down. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

It's a Logitech MX518, and I've installed all the drivers for it from the website.

The lag becomes very apparent if there is some sort of animation on the screen, particularly flash, however, even these small animations to the right (the smiles emoticons) seem to lag it, if that has anything to do with it.

Any ideas?

Hi, I may be missing something pretty basic here as my tech knowledge is pretty poor. I have recently paid my internet provider to increase my connection speed from 1meg package to 4meg as I need a faster connection. Ive done a speed test and it says that my speed is pretty much what the service provider has promised but when I use the wifi in my place (which I used with the original 1 meg connection) it doesnt seem any faster at all. I thought I'd be flying from one website to the next but its not happening that way at all. Someone said I should consider buying an aircard to increase my computers ability to recieve more data from the router but then someone else said that is not what an aircard is for. Anyway, Im stuck and would appreciate any help i could get as at the moment Im paying alot more cash each month for no improvement. Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers

My computer was running just fine til about a week ago. I am on a secure network that was before yielding 1/mb/sec download speeds on wireless router. I have tested the network on my laptop and it still runs just fine, however my desktop has become sluggish, the download speeds are down to 30kb/sec and the search function has been taken over by "" that Malware Bytes has failed to find. Today the internet would simply die and not reconnect, or my browser would redirect to dead sites. Hello, I just got this x360 Spectre i7 15.6" laptop and I love it, except for the speed at which things load on the browsers. I have high speed internet and ran a speed test and the speed is as it should. I've tried multiple browsers, and even though I have a very strong connection to my high speed internet, it takes forever to open up even a single website. Last week I have purchased a WD 2TB Green Drive as well as a non-raid capable raid card Rosewill RC-212; since my older PC (WinXP32, Celeron D, 1GB RAM) does not have SATA ports. I have installed fresh drivers form Rosewills? website even though they are not needed for non-raid configurations. The PC recognized the card right away as well as the HDD. The write speeds are as expected, however the read speeds are between 300KB and 2500KB. I cannot figure out why the read speeds do not exceed 2.5MB? I have plugged the HDD as an external drive via USB and the read/write speeds are as expected. Anyone knows why and how to fix it?

I have tried 1TB WD green drive (1.5-year old) and it works as expected.

Update 2:
I have just spoken with Rosewill tech and he said that using PCI card and such a large drive it is expected to be slow. Personally I believe it is B.S. You?

P.S. for moderators: I have similar thread under storage and networking, but it no longer applies as such issue. Please delete it.

A:My 2TB WD Green has fast write speed but slow read speed

The Rosewill card's transfer rate is "up to 1.5GB/s." The WD hard drive's is 3.0Gb/s. Perhaps if you set the jumper on the 5-6 pins to activate the 1.5GB/s rate per this instruction: Western Digital.

I'll also ping test my computer with no packet loss, a ping around 20 and jitter around 1-3%. It all looks great and dandy (Pics below). Except, after about 15 to 20 minutes, my download speeds will dropoff to about 20-50 kb/s and my ping test goes through the roof to about 70-90 with jitter near 70%... Not good at all.

Now, I have the suspicion this is being caused by my internal wifi adapter (the Realtek), because when I use another external usb adapter (TP Link TL-WN722N) my speeds never fluctuate and I have no problem, ever.

Hi all,
I want to connect my VCR to the computer to transfer old home movies to DVD.
The Analog to DV device requires a 1 GHz processor. Mine is 498 MHz.

Regarding the speed, will the device work only slowly or not at all?

A:Solved: Video capture device speed vs. processor speed

It is not a matter of slow or not at all. It is most likely a matter of dropped frames. If you have a cheaper video capture card [one without hardware decoding] it will probably work however you will not like the result.

Video editing / encoding is cpu intensive. I would hate to think how long it would take to encode the video file after you capture it [with that cpu]

To give you some idea, it takes me about 15 min to encode approx 1hr of video with an intel dual core cpu. With yours it will be hours.

Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

However as soon as a laptop is also plugged in also via ethernet and streams videos, the internet on my Windows XP computer is so slow, web pages can barely open.
Is there anyone to somehow make both of them at least able to both use the internet? What's the problem? Thanks in advance for any help

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a evaluation:

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

Just a preface: I know how to change mouse speed in control panel and that different mice have different speeds. I've looked up other mouse speed questions and they all seem to revolve around this.

My problem is that I have a diablo 3 mouse permanently plugged in to my computer. Whilst playing, it will randomly change speeds. To counter this, I keep going into the control panel and altering it which corrects the problem until it changes again (There are 11 marks in pointer options and I have to change it to either 2, 4, 7 or 11 depending). However, my in built laptop mouse pad does not change speed and it gets very annoying when I have to switch between the two - sometimes the laptop mouse is very slow and sometimes it's hyper-sensitive due to the speed in the control panel.

Is there a reason that the mouse does this? Is there any way I can stop it or alter it's speed whilst leaving the mouse pad at a different speed?

Thank you in advance!

Hello guys!

So I bought this kick-ass laptop from MSI. It is pretty good. These are the specs (in case they aid in finding a solution to my problem):

Name: MSI WorkStation Series GT60 2OKWS-674US

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

CPU: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7-4800MQ

Hard drive: 1 TB 7200 RPM, 128 GB Solid-State Drive

Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro K3100 with 4 GB DDR3 VRAM

Hard disk description: SATA

Optical Storage Device: BD Burner

Cache Memory installed size: 6.0
Problem statement:

I am trying to copy files from a DVD disc (some 3 GB of data) using the CD-ROM on this laptop. The transfer speed is EXTREMELY LOW! It starts with almost 3.5 MB/sec at first, but then after 10 seconds or so, it gets down to 500 KB/sec! The transfer was going to take approximately 6 hours, which is a lot for a laptop with specs like mine.

I tried to copy the same DVD to another laptop, which had much lower specs than my MSI, the approximated time was 10 minutes.

I tried to update CD-ROM but it told me that it was up to date.

Please help me guys!

I use burn4free and always use the same Memorex brand DVD+ 16X Discs. Yet most of the time they will only burn at 6X and every now and then at 12X and sometimes at 8X. Never at 16X even though I always have it set to Max speed as this is my only option. It doesn't seem to matter if I have any other programs running or not since I always close everything while burning. I failed at finding any info on this anywhere online as this is quite a difficult thing to search up. Help me please?

A:The same brand dvd's burn at max speed sometimes and a slower speed other times?

Poor quality media. Try a different brand type of media.

Quality media is recommended. For SL DVD, this would be Verbatim or Taio Yuden. For DL DVD, Verbatim only. Anything else is trial and error and will vary based on your burner and firmware version.

Hi everyone,
At first I noticed a slow down with my ISP (Verizon FIOS) from 15mb/s to 6-7mb/s, but the upload speed is unaffected. So, I called my ISP they told me could be an issue with the Windows that I am using.
Then I called MS regarding the network issue, however they told me that my license has expired is not under warranty for technical support. Here I am asking for some help.

Some of the thing that the ISP done was conducting some test:
Buffer size:261360 bytes
Receive size: 66608 bytes
Their ISP network technician told me that the Receive size was too low and causing problem to the download speed, but the upload speed is still good.

So, anyone who have any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months.

Other sites like that are about the same, or just time out and give me errors - such as Youtube. I recently got that "We're Sorry..." page on Google, so I'm thinking something is up and there may be something on my computer sending crap out.

Here's my results:

I've scanned the computer with ad-aware, spybot search and destroy, panda anti-virus, avg, malware bytes, super anti spyware - the works, and I'm not getting anything. Everything says the computer is clean. This just doesn't seem right to me however.

If it's any help - I used a different computer with the same modem and was able to upload fine.

Hello, how we all doing?

I however am not so good, someone told me that ones psychological well being is connected to the state of ones comp. Slow computer, a lot of irrtation. Obviously this is true.

But I digress!

Have an issue with high CPU that only occurs when internet/network card is involved. This makes my computer laggy.

According to asus liveupdate application I have the latest drivers for everything. I even updated my BIOS through it and it installed in windows, somehow. I did flash it via floppy or usb. I have read that this software is very unreliable and buggy.

If someone can give a link to where ASUS posts BIOS revision history/bugfixes I would appreciate it. I can't find it on this link.

I start OS, everything is fine.

Fire up latest version of chrome, 16.0.912.77 (my laptop has been connected on and off today and I have google update, so it should be this very latest), download anything (I think anything, at least from FTP) and CPU load increases as the download speed increases. It takes about 30-60 seconds for CPU to reach 100%, then the download speed decreases (I think my comp can't handle that high hd write speed while CPU is 100%). If it gets up to 1/2/3 MB/s (megabyte) this happens. Close dl/finished/paused → CPU goes back down to normal levels of idling (which I suspect is unusually high in my case). Windows is not very snappy, but not all too laggy either. I get maxed out to 12MB/s with ubuntu ftp, CPU rises, dls... Read more

Please visit this site to measure the real speed of the connection. When done please post the results here.
Internet providers (who gives you the internet) usually make an offer of x speed internet but they only guarantee you to get much less. So the speed might change up and down sometimes. So, sometime ago, around about the start of November, my internet speed dropped out of nowhere, and has remained at the constantly lowered speed since then. Usually, I would have a download speed of 4/5 mbps, however, in recent days that's more like 1/2mbps. When trying a bandwidth test, that would usually have been about 3.6/3.7 mbps, however that is more like 1.6 mbps now. (A way I used to scope what my bandwidth was, was using the website where when you watch a video on it, it will tell you your bandwidth rating before hand. That, as I say, has dropped from the 3.6mbps to the 1.6mbps mentioned. This is normally an okay speed to do things, however, whilst my father is using Netflix, the internet becomes so slow, that it is basically impossible to do anything. Normally, on my 'old' internet speed, it would have not been a problem.

Now, I've done all the tests that are normally mentioned to do, as I have been searching for an answer since the internet speed tanked. It is not a computer specific problem as it is exactly the same on all devices connected to the router. I have rung my ISP, and they have said that my line should be receiving around 5/5.5mbps, as we run on an ADSL connection. However, doing a line test through the same provider says we should be getting 2.27 mbps. My ISP reports no problems with the line, and there has been no change at my end either.

When the internet suddenly dropped (as I say, it was a sudden speed decrease, i... Read more

My wife has a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop running Windows 7 Professional, 64 Bit, 3.00 GB Memory with Intel 2.16 GHz.
Our ISP provider installed a new Router about four months ago and tested up and down speeds before they left.
Downloads were in the high 20s Mbps and uploads in the 5s Mbps.
I began to notice a couple of weeks ago that Internet access with either IE or Chrome seemed kind of slow. I ran and the best download speed is 12 Mbps but usually around 7 Mbps but the upload speeds are still around 5 Mbps.
I have an iPhone, a Kindle Fire and a Toshiba laptop and have run on them, (right next to the Dell laptop) and the speeds on all three are fine.
We use Norton Security and I ran the Power Eraser with nothing found. Ran Malware Bytes and nothing of concern showed up. Updated the wifi card driver from Dell as well as the driver for the Marvell Yukon Internet controller.
No Joy. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have for me to try to speed her laptop.

Ok I'm new to the forum but have loved having the resource here, so time to ask some questions and contribute myself. So, after extensive reading I decided to upgrade my trusty T530 to the W. Just a little background as to use case: I needed at least 32gb of RAM for the GIS work I do, but more so for the remote sensing aspect where I'll have several satellite images open at once and man do they eat RAM.I swapped out the motherboard, got a nice quad i7-3740, SSD main drive, 2TB ultrabay spinner, and mSATA ssd for other quick access data. Before I swapped the motherboard from the T530, I benched the mSATA card at SATA III speeds. I know that it is only supposed to be SATA II, and I am sure that I didnt mislabel the drives or anything. Below is the test. It is basically on par with the C drive SSD. Does anyone out there have any idea HOW that is posible? A:W530 mSATA speed oddity, was SATA III speed!

Something is wrong with your numbers. SATA3 max speeds is 600MB/s or 6Gb/s. You have that T530 mSATA measurement at 2657.9 MB/s???? That puts it in NVMe territory not SATA3 territory (where that is absolutely not possible.)

I'm looking to buying a wireless router. My desktop however will be directly pluged into the router. So will my download speed etc... be faster on the draft N rather then then the G? or will they both be the same exact speed?

A:Wired speed on wireless network G and N...any speed difference?

depends on what models your looking at. If they are both 10/100 then you should get the same wired performance from both animals.

I am using a gaming mouse which has a maximum setting of 3200 DPI. I have it set to 3200 DPI. The game I am playing has a slider to adjust mouse sensitivity and that slider is maxed out. With that said, the sensitivity/speed is still too slow for my liking.
Is there anyway that I can speed up the mouse sensitivity/speed in game. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Speed Up Mouse Sensitivity?

Razer? You could try a firmware update, but I don't think it's going to make much of a difference. 3200 is 3200.

I've got 8.1 on a Dell Inspirion 5738 laptop, I have a generic usb mouse attached. My problem is the mouse pointer slowly starts speeding up until it gets so fast I have no accuracy. I mean I move my pinky and the cursor moves from one side of the 17" screen to the other. I go in Control Panel>Mouse>Pointer Options> and set the speed to a slower speed. At this point I only have one more notch to go down, and it's still a little faster than I want it. How do I control the speed, you know, how do I keep it from speeding up? Is there a way to keep it a set speed other than the above mentioned procedure?

I have a weird problem.

I have a toshiba satellite m40 laptop, and wanted to replace my (kinda broken) mouse with a new one. My old mouse is a Microsoft notebook optical mouse (model 1020), and it worked fine but the wheel got all gummed up so it needed to get replaced. I went and bought a nexxtech laser mouse with retractable cord (model 2616542, i think), and plugged it in. The mouse speed went totally crazy, going about a dozen times as fast as my touchpad or my old mouse. Went into the mouse settings in the control panel, no dice, nothing worked. If i slow my mouse down to a reasonable speed, my touchpad slows to a crawl. It came with a driver (supposed to be installed only under windows 98), but eventually i tried installing that too, didn't work. If i slow the mouse down, can't use touchpad, and if i speed it up, can't use mouse. With my old mouse back in, it works fine. Any ideas on how to get the new mouse acting sane?

A:mouse speed problem

Are you sure you only were given drivers for 98? With my logitech mouse there was a connectivity suite that can be used to adjust setting ONLY for the attached mouse. Give another look at the CD to see if there is something else.

I know this works because my wireless mouse is much faster than my USB mouse, and that is even faster than my touchpad.

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:
1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves. If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

A:Speed Up Your Firefox

Yeah, been using this for a long time now. Although that network.http.pipelining.maxrequests is going to kill the internet if everyone uses it, lol. I have mine even higher than 30... OoOoo.

I didnt have that delay one though, thank you.

As if Firefox wasn't fast enough, here's a way to make pages load even faster.

This presumes you have Cable or DSL, not sure how it will work with dial up :?
(don't type in the quotation marks, put spaces just as I have them)

1) type "about:config" into the address bar, ENTER. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2) Alter the entries as follows:
(to toggle "false" to "true" just double left click on that entry, to change a value, right click and select)

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to a number like "30". This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3) Lastly, right click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set it's value to "0". This is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. That's it! Enjoy!

I set my network.http.pipelining.maxrequests, to 60, seems perfect.

You want Firefox to RIP do exactly what this guys says!!

He's a Senior Editor from C|net and Knows his Sh1t!!

Everything he says makes Great Sense, and if your like me,

you learn best with a Visual, example (vid)

I'm leaning FF very Well now, and it is a Memory HOG!!

But you can fix that, watch this vid do what he say and you'll

be flying!!

c|net Vid :: YouTube - Speed up Firefox

Enjoy!! One thing I do is not have FF save your Downloads,

have FF save them to YOUR desktop then you decide which

to keep and which to Ditch, saving a Million Downloads bogs down FF Big time.

IMHO also Go Lean as you can with your Add-On/Extensions, also a Memory HOG.

PS:: I use v3.09

He is such an expert that he does not even know that Firefox Safe Mode appears in the Vista Start/All Programs/Firefox listing; there's no need to type in the safe mode start-up the way he demonstrates, just use your mouse to get to the appropriate menu entry.

Be very careful about accepting advice from so-called "experts" about how to improve Firefox. For example, here and elsewhere, some of these people advise changing Firefox settings that actually have either no effect or a deleterious effect on Firefox's ability to work.

As for memory use by Firefox, here's the advice that actually makes a difference:

When I start up my computer or come back to it after a while and go to open firefox it takes forever to open. A:Solved: Mouse Speed Reseting Itself

Don't know if you use Setpoint, but if you do:
A little research turned up that the KHALMNPR.EXE startup item is used to “change [mouse] sensitivity on a per program level using [Logitech's] profile manager inside SetPoint.” Well, my problem is in regards to the mouse sensitivity so I decided to click the Remove button in Windows Defender. After restarting the issue was gone!

If you’re a Logitech SetPoint user that is suffering from the same issue it is easy to fix. Here are some quick instructions for using either Windows Defender or MSConfig to make the change:

* If you have Windows Defender installed go to Tools -> Software Explorer and then find the Logitech entry that points to the KHALMNPR.EXE file. Click the Remove button.
* To use MSConfig press the Windows Key + R to get the Run dialog. In the box type msconfig and press Enter. Click the Startup tab and find the KHALMNPR.EXE entry, and uncheck the box next to it.

In terms of missing features I haven’t noticed any. I can still do everything that I did previously with my mouse, but now my pointer speed remains the same when I restart my computer!

I have a really minor problem, well its more of just an annoyance than a problem.

For some reason when I set my mouse pointer speed in Windows it never retains that setting after reboot / logoff.

I am using a old and basic wired USB mouse but wouldn't have thought that would be an issue as its a OS setting.

Any thoughts or ideas why this would be the case?

So, I've always kind of had this issue (not something really new). However, after testing my wife's PC to see if it were a router issue or something, I realized I'm in a bad spot. My speed test had my D/L at like .6 Mbps and my U/L at like 1.14. Both spiked during the test around 2.0. Comparing to my wife's PC when I did the test was 14.2Mbps D/L and 3.22 Mbps U/L. Her PC has the hard line into it, while mine is directly connected to the router. The provider goes through her PC, etc.

Is there some tests I could do to find out if it's 1.) My PC 2.) My Router or 3.) Just some settings.

Good day to all. I am using AT&T(sbcglobal) dsl. My plan is for the speed of 1mb and under. Now, I realize I am not going to get 1mb, the speed will be under. But the tests I am running are showing speeds around or under 1/4 of a mb. All these tests were run one right after another, at 5 different times of the day, from 8am to 11pm for 3 consecutive days. I have 2 computers running XP that I ran the tests on, and there are no problems with either computer, other than the internet speed. Here are the results. download: 0.24mbps / upload: 0.32mbps download: 0.24mbps / upload: 0.32mbps

McAfee Internet connection speedometer: 200kbps

CNet Bandwidth Meter: line speed 224kbps

Now, when I run my ISPs speed test AT&T Speedtest, the test shows my speed is: download: 1.58mbps / upload: 0.31mbps. I don`t understand the large difference in speeds I am getting from independent speed tests, and the speedtest from my ISP. Now if I am to believe my ISPs speedtest, they are going to try to tell me I am receiving more download speed than I am paying for. I find that very hard to believe.

Since this is the first time I have looked into this, I am kind of in the dark about how much speed is expected exactly, but 0.24 seems on the low side to me. I know I will have to contact my ISP to look indepth into this problem, and that is why I came here first. I don`t want to sound like a complete idiot when I contact them. I've been told before that download speed is independent of how fast your Internet connection is. Is that true?

A:Download Speed v. Internet Connection Speed

Short answer = no. But on the other hand yes. Depends on how you mean the question.

Internet connection speed is defined by download speed and upload speed. - The Global Broadband Speed Test

It's probably an issue of semantics, i.e. what they meant when they said "download". Your "download speed" is dependent on how fast your ISP's download speed, but also how fast the downloading server us uploading the data, be it a file or a web page, or whatever. You can't get something faster than someone is sending it to you, however you can get it slower.

I am going to be buying a new computer in the near future and was wondering if backups, file copying, and defragging will speed up very much?

It seems like that at some point, the drives would not be able to keep up with the processor and faster processors would not be needed for many or even most applications.

I am using a 1 ghz Pentium 3 computer now and am going to get a new 3 ghz computer next.

Also, recently, I read an article about the new dual core Intel chips and that sounds like something that I would like but do not know if they are out yet, and if so, do not know what they are called.

A:Processor speed vs hard drive speed

The main point of having a faster processor is that it runs games smoother, compresses audio and video faster, and so on. These tasks are not particularly dependent on hard disk performance. Nearly all applications will benefit from a faster processor regardless of the speed of the hard disk.

Problem - My internet speed is beastly, I get a very good connection speed but whenever I try to download something the speed drops to almost nothing. The usual speeds I get for downloading are around 30 kb/s which should not be happening on a cable connection.

What am I to do to fix this issue? Please someone help me.

A:Internet Speed good download speed bad....

you can try a download accelerator like IDM or DAP something like that

after dealing with PCI usb hub. i went and got external usb hubs and yes it worked on windows 7, but only FULL speed, my cam went from fast to laggie, iphone connect to usb hub had a message " it can perform faster if connect to a high speed port" , i check under device manager and it says " the device is operating on FULL SPEED "

i have check online, full speed = 12 mb/s , high speed = 480 mb/s

are there any ways to change this?

First question... Are they high speed hubs?
I have an older 4 port Dlink here that's never run 480... looking into the chip on the internal circuit board, it turns out to be a 12mbps chip... you can slow them down, but you can't scare them into running faster.
