I have a limited wifi issue. Toshiba states update KB3114149 may solve the issue. I can't determine if this update was included when I upgraded to 10586/1511 as it is not listed in Update History.

After repeated problems with the update failing I did a clean install and installed kb3200970 manually from the windows catalogue and it shows as an installed update. Windows automatic updates wants to download and install it again. Is this really necessary? Any way to make it stop???

Hi all,

I use Linux and CUPS to provide free and stable networking printing shares for our community centre. Its easy to connection windows xp clients to the linux printer server, windows 7 is a pain, I have a work around, but would like to make it more streamlined.

I can get some older printers that do not have official windows 7 drivers working by using windows update during the driver selection phase of the printer set-up procedure. And selecting a slightly different printer from the list of available windows update drivers.

While this method works, there is a delay of between 5-10 minutes after clicking the windows update button before the list of drivers appears.

I would like to know if its possible to do any of the following 2 ideas:

1. manually access these driver files on Microsoft website somewhere, and download them for latter use.

2. Find where windows 7 saves the downloaded driver files and package them some how so they can be re-distributed.

I don't think there is a way to do that I would recommend that you set up a domain and be the system administrator for all fo the Windows 7 pcs, so you can install all of the updates on all of the computers at the same time.

I'm trying to download updates through Windows Update, it shows that I have 139 important updates, and 40 optional ones. I selected them and clicked the install button but it got stuck at "Downloading updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)". I cancelled and retried choosing only 24 important updates and the same happened. I tried the check for updates option but it also keeps checking forever.
I already ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, disabled my anti-virus and firewall, but nothing works.
I cannot install the SURT because it also keeps searching for updates.

I need to update so I can upgrade to Windows 10 - the setup also got stuck while checking for updates, so I was hoping that updating beforehand would do the trick.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are appreciated.

How do I manually download a podcast and have it appear in iTunes (to be synched with my iPod)?

I already know how to subscribe to podcasts.

I tried manually downloading an MP3 for a podcast and then put it in My Music fold that seems to contain all my music and podcasts for iTunes. However, then the file didn't t seem to appear in iTunes.

Does someone know what I am doing wrong?

Hi I'm a university student having a bit of trouble, for a project I have to install Windows 8.1 64 bit on several machines including updates.

As you can imagine updating each machine individually can be extremely time consuming. I was wondering if there's a way to manually download all the latest windows update files and put them in the Windows 8.1 ISO, so that once Windows is installed on the machine it will be up to date.

sorry if I haven't explained myself correctly

I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1.

I want to manually check for updates, make Windows download them if there is any, but wouldn't install at that moment, instead make Windows install them next time I shut it down.

In Windows XP, it was easy. You just selected the option to download. And when you attempt to shut down Windows, it asked if you want to shut down normally, or you want to install updates while shutting down.

However, in Windows 7, I couldn't find a way to do this same behavior. Can you please tell me how to, if there is any way to do it?

in the right hand corner theres a search box, type in your windows version
then find the specific files you want\need
then save them wherever you want

Stop Windows Update in services first
then START WU again and check for updates

Hi guys,

I've just put my Dell Studio back to factory settings after having it for two years and deciding to give it a rebirth. I maintain my laptop very well but always like to do a reset every so often.

The problem I'm having now is that the damn thing wont update from Windows Update. It will identify that there are 76 important or critical downloads, but hangs at 0% downloading.

I went to the MS catalogue and tried to download manually, but even though I had the updates selected in my basket, again, it just hung on 0%.

I've ran Kasperskys TDS, the Malicious Tool Removal MS thingy-ma-jig, ran an sfc check where it did note there were corrupt files but it couldn't fix them. The Fix It link to the MS Update Not Working thing found no problems either.

So, I'm scratching my head and going to do a restart and see what's going on.

Any help greatly appreciated as this is doing my nut in.

Cheers!

-Update

Interestingly, I've just reset and it's telling me the system had to be restarted to finish installing updates, but when you click on it for more info, there's no updates listed. Bloody liar.

Welcom to the forum
If you'r facing a problem in WU then use the tool provided by MS to resolve this problem:

If after that the problem persist and you say that you reset every so often, then consider to dowload your same version of your OS from:

I have a Toshiba laptop running Win 7 32bit. It was current on updates until July 2015. Then WU went crazy hijacked my cpu & kept trying to download Win 10. I know alot of people were having similar problems. Anyway its been worked on remotely by 2 different techs and I've spent most of the last 4 weekends researching and trying different fixes and nothing has helped. I think WU is completely screwed up now.

I just want to find and install the updates that I need from last July until now. I've tried MS catalog also the download pages at MS website but I can't seem to get the information I need. I read about a program called Belarc that among other things can tell what updates a system is missing. Has anyone used it for that purpose? Are there better programs? I really don't want to go thru 120+ pages of downloads at MS and try to pick out all the ones that I need. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

New to this forum so bear with me, I'm just desperate for help! I bought a laptop off of craigslist today because I was in desperate need of one seeing as my desktop has died. Only thing is I had no idea XP was no longer supported with many things. Is there a way to update it? It's in pretty good shape, just old. I tried to update the biois on the dell website but apparently the battery doesn't hold a charge well and it keeps telling me to charge it (It's on the charger but still not working.)The specs aren't so great from what I understand, Not fun going from my alienware to this, but I'm broke and can't afford anything else. Is there any hope for this to become a better machine?Microsoft Windows XP Home EditionVersion 2002 Service pack 3Intel(R) Celeron(R)MProcessor 1.40GHz0.99GB of RAMThanks in advance!

A:How to manually update my XP?

If you just run Windows update as normal you will get all the updates that are available for XP.  Not being in support just means that Microsoft will not be making any more updates, existing ones will still download. As far as making it better, I can't really think of anything unfortunately.  It's certainly not worth the cost of a more modern OS and that CPU will be a major limitation despite any upgrades you try.Of course, you can always create a thread on this forum about why your desktop "died" - We may be able to help you get that up and running again.

First off, I am using Windows XP SP2.

I am trying to update my modem drivers. They are not an auto install package. I go into the device manager and find the card. Neither right clicking and selecting update driver nor going into properties and selecting update driver from the driver tab launches the hardware update wizard. So, I cannot tell it where the drivers are. Nothing happens at all in fact except when i select it from the properties screen, the Cancel button greys out.

I have tested several other devices and none of them launch the wizard.

- never have I seen "update the updater"

I do not want a total auto-update of Windows

Once the updater is updated, how would I do a selective manual update of Windows by each KB in turn ?
MS tute Install Windows updates in Windows 7 is not clear enough for me

This is just an update to the updater. It will not change your manual settings to automatic. You can continue to apply manual updates once the updater is updated.

Win 7 Update keeps trying to install a driver, even tho I did it manually.

Here's the driver issue, you can see it "Failed" repeatedly. So I went directly to Intel and downloaded the appropriate driver and installed it manually. But every time I shut off my computer, I still get a message "Don't turn off computer, Installing Update 1 of 1" and it attempts to install the driver that I already updated. I did Google this issue, but no joy. Some help would be much appreciated.

Here's system info:

A:Win 7 Update keeps trying to install driver, even tho I did it manually

It's trying to install a newer driver version more than likely as Windows Update does use the versioning number (not the date) as the qualifier as to whether a newer or older driver is installed. The only thing you can do is hide the specific update (right click, Hide Update) - if you still get any issues then you're probably going to have to flush the Windows Update cache which isn't terribly difficult to do:

I figured out how to put Windows update in control panel without any secondary software. I used Brink's Add Group Policy to Control panel registry hack in the sevenforums.com as a template.

I modified to look like this.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
@="Windows Update"
"InfoTip"="Starts Windows Update (With Shortcut Key)"
"System.ControlPanel.Category"="5"
@="C:\\Windows\\System32\\imageres.dll, 74"
@="control /name microsoft.WindowsUpdate"
@="Add Windows Update to Control Panel"
The only thing I can't figure out is where the default Windows update icon is. I created one for my system but.. I don't know who would like it. Just change imageres.dll to your icon file with the number or just change the ",74" to another icon in imageres.dll

I've been experiencing with Windows Update KB976902 causing printer spooler errors and repeated blue screen system crashes on multiple hard drives for this one system.  The printer spooler errors first occurred
back in 2010 right after an automatic download and install of Windows Update KB976902.  I personally have done extensive online research over the years to source a permanent resolution to this problem and the final conclusion is to permanently delete/
remove/ uninstall Windows Update KB976902.  Problem is, once this update is installed, it cannot be removed.  Now I have made many aggressive attempts to remove this update like executing command prompt "wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976902"
will not uninstall the update.  A system restore to an earlier point will not remove the update.  Complete deletion and fresh reinstall of the Windows OS will not remove this update either.  I even attempted to tinker around in regedit to find
and remove, as you expect, my knowledge of navigating around in the OS registry is extremely limited thus I'm incapable of removing the update using this method.  I made several exhausting attempts to locate the file destination via command prompt and
really couldn't figure that out.  Cannot locate the folder/ file location of this update anywhere on the OS other than the Programs and Features location.  View Installed Updates does not provide any option for uninstall.

Hi,
According to the KB below information, there is no way to uninstall this update. Because it's a hotfix used to fix system problem, this hotfix would replace plenty of system file with new edition.

For your problem, we can try to fix printer problem by upgrade its driver edition, etc.

Second, all the update links lead to a page that signs me up for a Microsoft Update service that gives Microsoft even greater access to my PC.Unless it's absolutely necessary, I just have no desire to provide more access to my computer to a bunch of strangers.Does anyone know if there's a way to update these programs without signing up for a service? Even today, not all computers are hooked up to the internet -- I figure there must be a way to just get the updated files. Thanks!Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

What operating system are you using? If it is Windows XP...time is almost up.MPC Threat Research & Response Blog: Microsoft Extends Antimalware Support for Windows XPMicrosoft has announced the Windows XP end of support date of April 8, 2014. After this date, Windows XP will no longer be a supported operating system. To help organizations complete their migrations, Microsoft will continue to provide updates to our antimalware signatures and engine for Windows XP users through July 14, 2015. This does not affect the end-of-support date of Windows XP, or the supportability of Windows XP for other Microsoft products, which deliver and apply those signatures.

Hi there

Two computers - 1 Laptop, the other a desktop (Actally a "Cube type" HP Proliant Gen 8 Micro Server) updating to anniversary edition. Both connected to my internet via LAN from the same workbench in my "Lab".

1 updates automatically (the laptop) while the server says "Your system is up to date" so I had to do it manually.

Both computers running identical Windows edition (1511 with latest fixes) X-64 Pro GB edition with Icelandic Lang packs installed and Office 2016.

Any idea why the laptop received the update while the server didn't and had to be updated manually.

Cheers

Hi:

We have Norton Internet Security 2004 installed on our computer. We are fully subscribed to it. We cannot run Live Update manually (by pressing the Live Update button)... it goes on like it's downloading the virus sigs, etc, but at the end it says "everything is up-to-date". It is not!!!!! Our virus sigs are outdated. It will only update if it runs Live Update automatically.

I had to re-install Norton the other day because I upgraded our system, so now our virus sigs are rolled back to 2003. I hate being online even to type this question for fear of a virus attack.

So basically I am just waiting on Norton to decide when it's gonna run it's Live Update automatically so we can get some new virus sigs....

Oh - we run Windows XP (we had this same problem when I was on Windows ME .. so it can't be the OS)

Hello everybody,

I need help on how to install manually a patch which seems to be quite essential to upgrade my
16gb tablet to the 1511 build of windows 10:

the patch is KB3124260 and I downloaded manually the .cab file from the official support site, but I have
no experience about this, and no clue on how to install it. Is there any tool or script available?

thank you very much in advance!

A:Infos on how to install an update patch manually (.cab file)

You can install a .cab file using DISM like this from an elevated command prompt (you'll need to update the path in red..)
Code:
It should however install automatically anyway (according to the release notes) so do check windows update first.

2 problems.

1) I disabled Windows Update in Services to avoid having to deal with the bullsh* updates. Later I put it on "manual" instead of "disabled". Today I find that my computer is "installing updates" WITHOUT a) my permission and b) without notifying me that there were updates to install. This thrashed my hard drive with near constant 100% usage from something called Windows Modules Installer Worker. I killed the process, rebooted after some Adobe Reader issue (unrelated....I think). Upon selecting "restart" Windows informs me that it is updating my system WITHOUT my permission. It continues, updates, says finished, restarts to 0%, finishes, reboots.

Upon restart--which takes FOREVER by the way without the "updating" message, when it used to only take a few seconds to boot up--I go to Services where I find Windows Update is set on "running". Even though I manually stopped it, and set it to "manual trigger" start....

2) After restart when I am in Services to kill Windows Update and set to manual--again--I see something called Update Agent, set to run automatically. I do not remember this service from before, and I have no idea what it does different from Windows Update. I set it on manual as well.

What does Update Agent do differently from Windows Update? They are listed as separate services

What happened to make my computer update without my consent??

I couldn't remember this login, so I created a new 1, hamluis said it's best to post on old account and he would try to link them or just delete the new 1, which is DumbBlonde1. Gringo assisted me last year during my ZeroAccess Rootkit Infection, and my PC ran like a charm after that until now.

But here are my current issues:

Randomly I get a rotary dial from the PC, usually that happens when the PC is in SLeep Mode and doesn't want to revive.

Malwarebytes no longer updates automatically and neither does MSE.

When trying to run Windows Update I receive a error message, trying to correct it I can not, because the BITS is missing. Although in MTB it does not show a BITS issue

Had been running Emsisoft anti malware on deep scan and found following results :four (4) fake av attempts, and trojan exploit java/cve -2010. Attempted to remove same, and was unble to do so. Keyboard and mouse froze had to unplug from power to shut down.
Ran scan again this time took more than 5 hours (normall full scan ~2 hours) reported trojan still present and again froze up as above.
Since then I have removed and reinstalled java (latest version) and uninstalled emsisoft anti malware program.
Attempted to run Dr. web, system became unstable (even in enhanced protection mode) rendered both mouse and keyboard ineffective, again had to power down.
Rebooted in safe mode was able to run Dr. web in quick scan, which reported no malicious activity. However, when exiting message came on saying part of application was disabled and did not run.
All of this came about because I am unable to install MS security patches. Virus or malware is blocking same.
I have had experience with running GMER program in past and tried several runs each time system either rebooted or shut down, with out indicating any root kit activity.
Will attach GMER log and DDS log as requested.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. As of now I am missing four possibly five critical MS security patches, and have to click mouse 3 or 4 times for any actions to occur. Prior to the blocking system was running without incidence

I tried to run Windows Defender Offline 64 bit on a friend's laptop using WDO installed on a USB stick, but it refused to scan the disk because it insisted on getting Updates to its definitions before scanning.

So either the definitions on the USB stick were too old or not present at all or WDO couldn't find them. I had not run WDO from that USB stick before.

But the laptop had just a Wi-Fi connection and WDO doesn't work over Wi-Fi.

I have successfully used the 32 bit WDO USB stick on my own Desktop without such a problem, probably because my Desktop is connected to the Internet via a LAN.

I checked another thread on this subject on SevenForums, here:

Defender Offline on DVD failed because no internet connection

I disagree with the statement by karlsnooks that WDO does not need an Internet connection. This was confirmed here:

defender offline cannot update no internet connection - Microsoft Community

However, if someone knows how to manually download the virus definitions and copy them to a USB stick, I would be very interested.

I suppose I could download and create another WDO ISO file on my hard drive and see what's in it, try to identify the definitions and update the equivalent files on the USB stick... but that would be very much trial and error. If someone has actually done it, please let me know.

Hello there,This is my first post. I believe I have a virus issue - Win32/Alureon.A exists on my PC. I understand that this may be responsible for the re-direction issues I am experiencing when using Google. What happens is that I select a particular website from the returned Google search list and Google redirects me to another website. In trying to fix this I went to windows update to make sure I was up to date. I was unable to manually execute Windows Update. Then I realised that I had not been getting the relevant updates.I then activated Windows Defender. I had it turned off as I use the AVG Anti Virus software protection (free version). I then did a scan using a Microsoft product "something scanner" which took hours to run. It did identify the presence of Virus:Win32/Alureon.A . When I looked this up I could see it was related to my "re-direction issues" with Google.I am unable to get the Windows update to work properly. The windows system advised me that some infected files, as a result of the Virus:Win32/Alureon.A, could not be fixed. As a result of my inability to fix the problems, I went searching for answers on various web forums. I noticed on "Bleeping Computer"a number of users were experiencing the "re-direction issue" when using Google. So here I am hoping that you will be able to help me solve my PC problems. My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition SP3 and my browser is Internet Explorer Version 7.0.5730.13Kind Re... Microsoft/Windows Update works when you let it "automatically" install updates - i.e. Click on "Turn Off".

It fails when I try to do it manually.

I have tried a number of ideas posted here and elsewhere. But, so far, nothing has resolved the issue. This is not a result of a repair, serivice pack update, etc. I tried Dial-a-fix also, but it did not work either.

I reinstalled Windows recently, but it used the same boot partition from my old installation. I got rid of the old partition (it was on the wrong hard drive) and created a new one with the repair disc. Windows boots, but won't install updates. Bcdedit outputs

I think it can't find the boot partition. Is there anything I could set so that it knows where it is? Thanks.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... It's rumoured that Win 8.1 - Update 2, should be available sometime in August ...

A question ...

At home we have a Win 8.1 laptop (ASUS X54C), plus a Win 8.1 Desktop PC

Both machines currently run 8.1 64-bit Pro, with their own Microsoft key (... they are both legitimate / legal & registered OS's)

Here in South Africa, data is expensive, and slow .. (or at least it is in the small town I live in - my Max ADSL speed available is up to 4 Mbps). Our ADSL package from our monopolistic, Government-controlled, service provider is a capped service, and downloading the Windows 8.1. update 2, will put a serious dent in our monthly data allowance

So, my question this:
Is there a way I can download the upcoming update once only, say to a disc or USB, and then use it to update 2 different devices (i.e. the laptop, and the Desktop PC)?

A:Win 8.1 - Update 2 (One download to update 2 x machines?

Trying to help a friend remotely

Basically they have XP, Norton, and pretty nice system.

Suddenly Norton reports its been switched off, and they cannot get it back on again. They try to update Windows, Norton, Spyware Doctor, Office etc and even though PC can access sites, when they try to install it just crashes.

No obvious viruses or Trojans seen but Windows seems totally screwed up.

Can anyone suggest a reason for PC being unable to apply updates ???? They also reported that when trying to access SWD, Microsft or Norton sites they get a "Page cannot be found" message, but other sites None Security" access OK.

I am stuck between a Reload of XP and a reformat.........because its tough to get to the bottom of their problem especially as most of their stuff is in German /French and English. System Repair, System Restore just made Windows worse.

A local guy tried removing Norton and Office, but it has not made much difference. I am pretty confused and apologise if this is confusing as well. Distance and lack of clear info is difficult.

These are symptoms of an infection - I'd either suggest going through the advice at these links:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/Or going with the format and reinstall to start over fresh.

Help!! I installed SP2 for XP and had a problem with connecting to the internet. So after some checking, I undid my changes with system restore. I now am back with SP1 but can not download anything. I run Avast, and it can not download updates. I tried downloading a file off the web and get an error stating, 'UNABLE TO DOWNLOAD INSTALLATION SCRIPT. MAKE SURE YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET.' Here's my setup. Again I run XP SP1. I have Comcast ISP with a Motorola Cable Modem with a broadband wireless router. Now, I also updated my laptop with SP2 with no problem. I can still access internet and download files with the laptop. So this limits my problem to my home pc, correct? I tried looking to see if there were any firewalls blocking, but I could not tell. Any suggestions? All help is appreciated.

I cannot update or download files from Internet (for Windows update, Sophos antivirus, any programmes with .EXE files). I get these messages:

* The setup files or the source file is corrupted (example: C:\Program files\GIMP-2.0\bin\freetype6.dll)

* Unknown publisher. Digital signature missing.

* Error codes for Win update Vista SP2: 80200053

I have a desktop HP Vectra 500, Vista 32x SP1, Sophos antivirus. Wireless.
Sometimes small Win updates work, one at a time. I can install programmes from an USB memory with .EXE files.

I have tried these solutions, with no luck, found in web forums:

2. Dont use wireless router, use network cable to computer.
3. Rename folder ...Windows\software distribution..
4. Cryptographic services start automatically
5. Rename folder ...System32\Catroot2
6. Register DLL files associated with Cryptographic services....
7. Delete files in folder ...Windows\SoftwareDistribution
8. Run Superantispyware
9. Run hard disc check in BIOS
10. Write in command prompt: fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\
11. Create a new user account
12. Disable Windows defender
13. Purge folders C:temp, C:windows temp
14. Before using a .EXE file, right-click=> choose properties=> Unblock
15. Uninstall and reinstall Adobe flash player Active X. Deleted a damaged file {E2883E8F-472F-4FB0-9522-AC9BF37916A7} in ....Downloaded program files.

Hello, I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit. I am unable to update or download any software from websites. I just ran avast and have run malwarebytes and AVG and all have reported and removed affected files. But I still have the same problem. PLEASE HELP!!!

I try to update malwarebyes and receive the following, "An error has occurred. Please report this issue to our support team (include the content of all error message(s) and code(s) in your submission). PROGRAM_ERROR_UPDATING (0,0, Host not found)
I can't even check for windows updates! Here's the message I get,

Before i begin i have used the search tool on this site.

Is there any way you can download the latest Windows 7 updates as an actual file? Rather than "Check for updates". I currently get an error on a few machines and it would be easier to just go around and install the updates from a file... And if so, would it be possible from a Microsoft website? I've searched for sometime and i cannot find any such thing.

Again, sorry if this is a silly question.. but it has been plaguing my mind for a while now.

hi sysprep, and welcome to sevenforums,

I made the mistake of clicking on a link in a message that I think infected my computer with a virus. Since then, my AV (Avira) won't update. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, but same thing happens. Also tried to download Avast!; connection fails. Downloaded a trial version of BitDefender, and attempts to update it also fail.

I have done online scans with TrendMicro (found nada), Kaspersky(found Trojan.Downloader.JS.Gumblar.a in my OE Inbox.dbx and SentItems.dbx, but did not remove them. BitDefender didn't find that, but did find Trojan.Exploit.Iframe.D, and supposedly zapped it.

But something is obviously blocking any attempt to get an updated AV back on my PC.

Here's the log from HiJackThis. I don't see anything suspicious, but am not an expert, so need you help. OS is Win XP-SP3.

Hello,
Yesterday, I was on my computer (distracted) and I got a little icon to update. I thought it was a Windows security updage and clicked it to download. After it downloaded and restarted, I realized it didn't look like a Windows icon. After that I could not get anywhere after the homepage of any sites in my links I have saved. It is hard to get anywhere and computer is slow. I use Firefox mainly, but IE is doing it also. I checked the scan disk and it said it didn't need defragged. I tried System Restore to day before yesterday and it told me I could not restore to that date, so I tried the day before. Same results, then tried the 9th and still said I could not restore to that point. I ran Malwarebytes and it found nothing.
I have attached a HiJackThis log.

Here are links to the two best programs for finding and removing malware.http://www.superantispyware.com/http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.phpIf you have either of those programs downloaded, find the .exe for it and rename it by right clicking on the file and choosing rename. Name it lastchancescan. Then click on the file and run it. If you don't have either of those then you can use another computer to download them to a CD or other medium and use that to place the programs on the infected computer. Be sure to rename them before attempting to install. Both programs can be manually updated by getting the updates for them at the time of download. http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html (link to SAS manual update installer)http://www.gt500.org/malwarebytes/database.jsp (latest database)

Both of my Windows 8.0 computers (desktop & laptop) have Windows 8 installed. And the Microsoft Store shows that the 8.1 update is available to me on both computers. But they won't download because I believe my ISP is blocking this update. I keep getting the error 0x80240031 when attempting to download.

Is this 8.1 update available as an ISO or on a DVD from Microsoft ? I think this is the only way that I will be able to get the 8.1 update if my ISP continues to block me.

A:I have 8.0 but can't download 8.1 update. Need ISO or DVD.

Hello in2jesus,

Check to make sure that you have disabled or uninstalled any 3rd party AV/Firewall program, and installed the KB2871839 update in Windows Update to see if that may help. In addition see the links below to see if anything else may apply to you.

This is such an old issue that all the previous threads have been ended. So here is my problem: I have Windows XP SP3 on a Dell PC with a Pentium 4. I tried to update earlier this week and downloaded about 10 or more updates, they all installed except for four. But here's the deal, my update history shows a successful installation, of these four, by indicating a green check mark, however the gold shield in my tray reminds me that I have uninstalled updates. Also, when I shut down I am reminded again that I have uninstalled updates waiting. When I run Windows Update again it reminds me that I have four critical updates needed; the same four that show the green check mark.

I have tried Microsoft "Fix It" and downloaded Microsofts' new installer. So far no good.

And when I use my Quickbooks there is a run-time error "0" in one of the drop downs that I like to use. I would really like to get my Windows system working correctly again, I am so careful about downloads & attachments and I have Kaspersky Pure Internet protection.

Hi there, I'm hoping that someone can shine some light on a problem I'm having.

The most recent update (kb940510) via Windows Update gets stuck at 3.0 MB (21%) when downloading, then times out and gives me one of two error messages, either 80072EFE or 80072EE2. I've done all the research I can for these errors or similar ones and tried every related fix from stopping WU and clearing its cache and restarting it, to resetting the ip stack, disabling my router's firewall and the default Vista one to even doing a system restore to a point a few days earlier... nothing seems to work, always frozen at the same place. The funnier thing is that I was able to download and successfully install OTHER updates such as Silverlight and a Defender definition minutes before, and even uninstalled and reinstalled them while kb940510 won't budge after the others have installed.

Any ideas? I'm getting very frustrated as nothing else on my PC seems to be affected at all.

Thanks!

it a number of times but still get the same answer ,I do all this online, Can you help me get the updating.
Thank you

It's likely your firewall is not configured to allow it to connect.
Please post a HijackThis log so I can see what you're running.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hey so I just got a brand new Lenovo Yoga and I love the laptop/hybrid feel. I downloaded one game and all worked well and now I can't download any apps or update any either. They all just stick at "pending" Any ideas as to what could be the problem? It's awfully early to be having problems!

I downloaded the full 400+ SP1 for Vista Ultimate but wanted to wait and see if it became available through Windows Update. Today it showed as being available but when I tried to download it (64 megs) it failed. Not the install but the download.

Does it make any sense to just install the full download that I already have or do I start the process of finding out why I can't get the Windows Update download to work.

It seems to me it would be better to just install what I already have. Would sure appreciate any and all suggestions.

What type of error are you getting. It took me 4 attempts to download SP1 through Windows Update. Kept getting knocked off with an error I don't remember but after restarting it resumed at the place it left off. Evntually it completed the download and installed.

You can do it either way. If you ever have to reinstall Vista it is better to have the standalone package and not have to reapply all the updates prior to SP1.

I have just reinstalled windows 7 using HP recovery DVDs and I want to download service pack 1, but it is not on the list when I use windows update. Microsoft has an option to download it on its own on their web site but it is a much bigger download than using windows update and it downloads so slowly that it would take many hours. I could order the disk, but who knows how long that would take. I just want to download sp1 using windows update, is there any way to get it to work?

Hello
