Sound distorted and stuttering in windowed mode.

Q: Sound distorted and stuttering in windowed mode.

I recently reinstalled my Vista Home Premium 32bit. Everything seems to work, except the sound. It's choppy, distorted and crackling when I listen to music, watch videos or play games.
The peculiar thing is, that when I enter full screen mode in either a game or a video, the sound becomes normal and I also my FPS in video games also goes back to the normal 60-120 it was with the last installation.

I have a C-Media sound driver and ATI HD 4600 series graphics card. Both should be running latest drivers, AFAIK.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just wanted to check- have you installed SP1, SP2 and all subsequent updates?

What is the driver designation for the C-media audio?

So lots of applications that are not in fullscreen mode start stuttering and they also experience intermittent freezing. This only happens with certain applications however, it does not happen with Google chrome but happens with every single game I have played (I play all games in windowed mode as I have dual monitors) and it also happens with Skype and Teamspeak, and I assume many other applications that I just haven't run since the problem started occuring.

When the problem started:
The problem started roughly 2-3 days ago while in a game (Arma II if that helps) - I do not believe I updated or downloaded any new software shortly before the problem started.

Detailed description of the problem:
The entire screen goes grey for a millisecond (as if it is about to say 'NAME has stopped responding') and then for another millisecond the desktop flashes through the window (as if the opened application quickly disappeared and re-appeared) and the icon for the application in the taskbar will disappear and then re-appear shortly after at the end of the taskbar (after the other open applications) as if the entire application has reloaded.

When the problem occurs:
The problem seems to occur when left clicking in these windowed applications, but it does not happen all the time and it may happen repeatedly after one left click. It is as if it is conflicting with something in the background, I use rainmeter, windows dreamscene and circledock for my desktop, and other than that have noth... Read more

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.Press Scan button. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from. Please copy and paste log back here. The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Hi all,

I have 2 XP machines, both dells, 1 a laptop (inspiron m140) the other a desktop (dimension b110) that distort all sounds playing if the computers are running or loading anything. It doesn't matter if it's music or a video saved to the machine or if it's something I'm streaming, it all gets distorted. It's to the point where I can't listen to music at all anymore without it stuttering constantly. I don't think it's a hardware issue as both machines didn't always do this and I've checked and updated the drivers. I believe this may be some reaction to a setting I've affected, but can't be sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much

When is the last time you did a disk Defrag? it sounds as though there is a great deal of disk activity when you do anything, and that could be why your sound is getting distorted. You can check to see if it needs it. It will tell you whether or not it needs a defrag.

My Media Center refuses to play in windowed mode. When I hit the center button (windowed mode) it acts like the minimize button. In the setup settings I do not have the media center in front setting checked. A while back the windowed mode did work, and then one day it stopped working. Can anybody help me on this?

A:Windowed mode

Actually it doesn't act exactly like it is minimized. When I right click on the Windows Media Center tab on the bottom of the screen, it gives me the "size" and "move" options. When I select one of the the cursor appears in the top left corner in the four directional format, but the cursor returns to the arrow when I left click it, and nothing else happens. Basically it acts like it is windowed, but isn't. If I select cascade windows, or stacked, it behaves like Media Center is windowed right along with other windows, but it doesn't display.

(apart from the odd bug-out and shutdown of the game)
but i'm sick of having to minimize the game and have myself ejected from the multiplayer just because i wanted to surf youtube or talk on msn..
i NEEEEED a windowed mode and so far nothing i've tried worked..

Here's what i've tried...

putting a "-windowed" "command.txt" file in the install directory
"H:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -windowed"
In the Target Section of the shortcut that's on my desktop
Neither of these work... Neither!!
so if anyone could get gta 4 working in windowed mode.. that'd be great.. cause it's a game i'm playing quite regulary and wanna be able to play it comfortabley in window mode..

I have a monitor that has run into some kind of problem, and the screen has become stretched out so that the icons and all content on the extreme right and left (like the Start button and the system clock) are no longer visible. The monitor's buttons at the front which allow you to adjust the placing of the screen don't work. Some of them do, and I can scale the screen vertically, but not horizontally, and I can shift the screen entirely to the right to see the Start button but then a large part of the left side gets cut off. Its a hardware problem, I think due to moisture. Its an old one, I don't use it much, and I can't find the time to get it repaired. My question is, is there any way to run XP itself in a windowed mode? We can run games that way, or a virtual PC. This is how I want it to be, the XP desktop itself shrunk:Thanks.

I haven't found any games that you can't temporarily get out of by using ALT+TAB. That's not a feature of the game programmer, it's part of Windows for switching applications

I read some tutorials that say to add "-window" to the end of the Location address, but in this particular case with the game "Tony Hawks Underground 1" I can not.

Here's a screenshot:
Also, the game uses a "Launcher" if this is any help:

I have given myself full control of the program in Security to see if it helps, and it does not.

A:How do I run a game in Windowed Mode?

First of all the shortcut would need to see the "target" line while many game installers tend like Steam create a url type desktop shortcut. That's when you look in either the Start>Programs for the game folder if view setting for it is set to appear as a folder or in the Program File(x86) game folder for the main executable in order to create a new shortcut that offers the target line.

That's where the "-window" switch is added in and then you click on the apply button for that shortcut's properties screen. But will a particular game title run in a windowed mode? is another factor entirely! Many games will simply stall if the mouse clicks on anything outside of the full screen mode's own menu or while in a game map. Older titles going back roughly 8 to 10yrs. tend to fare better in that regard overall.

For many real old titles hitting the Alt-Enter key combination will automatically switch from full screen to a windowed mode while much newer titles seem to go into a hibernation. For each game title a separate test is needed to see if this will work.

Hey guys, I like to play Age of Empires II/III and Empire Earth II

However, I don't like playing in fullscreen. Is there anyway to force them as windowed mode? (I am aware that AOE 3 has that option built in unlike the others)

Many Thanks.

A:Force Games into Windowed Mode

If you right click on one of the icons, like on your Desktop, go to Properties. There will be a "Target:" text box that should have the directory map of the actual install location... after the end of the default text, press Space twice and type "-w." This may not work for all games due to different "Argument Recognition" inputs from different Publishers. Diablo, Diablo 2, Warcraft - Warcraft 3, and Star Craft all become "Windowed" if you use the "-w" argument.

Try it, it may work.

Hi, I'm having an issue with most of my games. For some unknown reason the programs will flash white and say that they are not responding, this only seems to happen if I use my mouse and click on the actual window. Considering most of the games this happens with require the mouse to use, this can get really irritating.

Another problem, which I'm sure this is related to the flashing windows, is when I click out of a game. It doesn't show up, it will still be in the taskbar but I will be unable to play it.

This problem doesn't work with any other programs (i.e. Google Chrome, Steam).

If anyone has a solution for this, that would be brilliant!

Thanks in advance!

So I recently upgraded my computer from:

Radeon X800 XL 256MB AGP

some sort of ASRock mobo

Same gfx card
AMD Athlon 3200+
1x 1 gig ram
new ASRock Dual Series "939Dual-SATA2" mobo
Windows would not boot under old install, so I installed it to a new location on the HD. However, all is not well. When I try to run a game (namely Oblivion, ZSNES, AoE3, Galactic Civ 2) in fullscreen mode, nothing displays onscreen. Sound will play, and if I hit escape it will move to main title music, but the screen just stays black. If I manage to get the game into windowed mode (either through the pre-game config screen, or in some cases alt+enter), the game will run, and some games even look like fullscreen if I set the resolution to the same as the desktop.

I have tried: updating drivers (including CPU, graphic, directx, sound, and AGP), every possible permutation of settings in games, patching games when applicable.

I have considered: maybe installing Windows XP 64 bit (I can get it relatively easily), or maybe installing on new partition.

Any suggestions?

Oh one other anomaly: when I try and play HL2 (or any of the mods), the game will run fullscreen, but if I go into options and turn on either AA or Vsync, the screen will go black as above. But if I force quit the game and go back into it, it works fine and it says the options are still on.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a separate Video card lower in the case, or do you plug your monitor into the onboard VGA?
First try a System Restore to a time before this happened. If that still fails
Go to the Computer/Motherboard Manufacturers support/download Drivers site, type in your make and model # and download the Video/Display driver for your model. ,

Okay, so I've got two problems here. The first is that my windows keeps randomly deciding not to be genuine. I run notepad or any other default windows program and a box comes up saying windows isn't genuine and gives me a link to go make my windows genuine. I go to the link, (which takes me to a microsoft web page, I don't remember the exact url, but when it happens again, I'll make sure to note it down so I can post it here, if you want) and I download a windows activator program thingy, which then makes my windows genuine again and all's well. I've noticed that, when the problem happens, if I pull up system information (windows key + pause) I see that windows activation status is not available and my windows key is not available, but once I run the activator, then they both go back to normal. It's happened about 4 times, now. It doesn't cause any major issues for me, but it does worry me greatly.

My second problem is really confusing and I've asked a few other computer savvy people I know for help, but none seem to know what's going on. When I try to run any games in windowed mode, or even when I watch movies, I get triangular shapes on the screen. The shapes seems to be sections of the video that lag behind by a frame or two. There's nothing visually there, it's just that sections of the screen seem to lag behind, kind of like when you try to run a game on a really old system that can barely handle it, but the games don'... The first one today which appeared was a message DIsc D is Corrupt, I shut down my computer right away and ran CHKDSK on startup, and it now seems to be fixed, but I'm not even sure what this means. Yesterday I scanned my computer with Malwarebytes ( Entire computer ), and found around 10 viruses. Then I had to restart computer because malwarebytes said so, and I clicked restart, and I believe this appeared on startup because of the problem I got some time ago. When I turn off computer, or switch windowed to full screen ( full screen to windowed ) I get black screen, but only if computer was been running for some time, if it's like 10-15 minutes, it goes fine. To explain more, computer keeps running, aswell as my monitor, but screen is black like when monitor is off, I also tryed shutting off and on the monitor. So because it turned black when restarting, I was going to sleep anyways so I shut down computer instead of restarting using the button on computer ( There is no other way than do that ). And I'm not sure did this appear because of shutdown like that after virus scan or because of an virus. So help with these both problems would be helpful. I'm still not sure do I have an virus, but I remember right now when running second scan with Malwarebytes, I forgot to turn off antivirus, and antivirus has seen vcredist as an virus, I said antivirus ignore it and turned it o... The last thing I did is scan my computer with Emisoft and there was around 20 viruses, I qarantined them all except one which was a false-positive ( Even checked on virus scan website ( I think it's virustotal ) it was voted as false-positive by other people. ) So I'm not sure if I don't have any malwares anymore
I'm not really experienced with posting on this site so I think I need to post FRST scan results here.

It isn't always comes and goes, but it's pretty ugly. I thought it might be a sample rate thing, but I changed those settings in control panel.

Anyone use that card with vista successfully?

A:distorted sound in vista/createiv x-fi titanium sound card

I had a Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic in my rig and I constantly had distorted audio - manifesting in the form of 'crackly', echoing sounds. Really frustrating, I tried all kinds of solutions including a clean uninstall of the audio drivers, replugging the sound card in a different PCI slot, etc. For a while everything would be fine, and then back into crunchy-sound-land...

My rig used to have Windows XP Pro as the OS, and the sound card worked perfectly. It was only after I changed the OS to Vista that the woes began.

This is probably not the solution you want to hear, but after 2 years of despair I flogged the card on eBay and bought myself an Auzen X-Fi Prelude 7.1 card. Although that is still an X-Fi it works beautifully in Vista, absolutely no problem with the sound since.

I am having distortion issues with my HP Pavilion ze4547wm laptop.

My audio from the laptop speakers seems to sound good, but when I plug the laptop into my home sound system, my music sounds very basse and distorted.

I checked the device manager, but the sound card( ALi Audio Wave ) seems to be working properly

The same with the codecs, or do I have too many? IMA ADPCM Audio Codec
Microsoft ADPCM Audio Codec
Microsoft CCITT G.711 Audio Codec
Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio Codec
DSP Group TrueSpeech(TM) Audio Codec
Windows Media Audio Codec
Sipro Lab Telecom Audio Codec
Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec
Microsoft PCM Converter

Thanks for your attention to this matter. I use this laptop at youth sporting events for sound effects and music.

runing XP with service pack 2

any help gratefully recived , the pc is hopless without sound

A:Sound Problem , Crackely And Stuttering /built In Sound

Try uninstalling Voice Buddy. If the sound is OK, then you know it was either a corrupt install of Voice Buddy or a setting in the program needs tweaked

I'm having problems with my sound, i am getting a stuttering sound more and more frequently when watching videos online/dvds.

I have tried going into the device manager and updating my drivers in the sound section, but apparently they are up-to-date. Really don't know what to do next!

I have a Toshiba laptop, satellite series. I've had no joy on that website with support. I am using Windows 7.

Any ideas?!

A:Problems with sound when watching dvd, stuttering sound

Hmm well first of all Id make sure that you are experiencing this problem while watching dvds as well as online. The reason I say this is because if its just online it could be bandwidth and if its just the dvd, it could be the damaged media.

Assuming you are consistently having sound issues watching videos online and via dvd my first guess would be overheating.

Do you have the ability to play sound files without issues? Is the problem only with video?

When I start XP my PC has a problem drawing the Welcome screen. It is distorted - not wavy, but blocks of pixels out of place, sort of like a Picasso. Through this distortion I can see my login and pw field. My mouse pointer is visible and moves fine but XP doesn't "hear" me typing into the pw form. About every 30 seconds the screen goes black for a half-second then redraws itself distorted again.

Sometimes after the first attempt to draw the welcome screen my PC will go black and reboot itself and then it gets into a rebooting loop.

I can only get into XP by booting into safe mode.

Prior to this happening I have made no hardware changes in months.

This happened to my backup PC months ago but I thought it was a fluke. I fixed it by reinstalling XP. I'd like to avoid that.

I am running though a KVM switch but I switched my monitor to come directly from my PC and still have the issue. My mobo has no video out but since my card outputs video just fine when i nsafe mode, I don't suspect my card.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - I really want to avoid having to reinstall XP.

My Specs:
AMD Athalon64 3200
Win XP Pro (32bit)
nVidia GEForce MX 4000 256MB

Let me know if you need anything else.

A:Distorted Welcome Screen - Can't Login - XP only runs in Safe Mode

Try going into safe mode and uninstalling your video card drivers through the device manager, and then reboot and see if you get the same thing. If you can get into Windows normally reinstall your video card drivers, and reboot again and see if it comes back. I would recommend stopping by and checking if there are any newer drivers before reinstalling them.

Also have you installed any programs lately that deal with video or your monitor things like that?
Because they could be starting up with your machine and it could be as simple as turning it off in msconfig.

Hope this helps.

Hey, i'm using windows xp service pack 2 and something odd has happened very recently...

I restarted my computer, about 2 hours ago, and the sound was very distorted... Sounds inverted, volume low, metallic and just plain wierd... I noticed by D drive (Windows drive) was only 120mb's left on it and figured that might be a problem so i deleted random folders i had lying around (of back up jpg's, bmp's and vids i stored) and it went back up to 624mb's. I restarted my computer, hopefully to restore it, and it hasn't gotten fixed...

I use a USB Headset Logitech 350 Model and i have tried connecting it into each of my 4 USB ports along with inspecting the wire and there isn't even a twist or bend on any of the wires. The physical condition is really good (Parts of it are still in it's protective plastic without holes), so i doubt it is because of ware & tare or physical abuse... It sprung out of no where..... Any Ideas?

I use the E-MU soundcard and sound system. I recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and now my sound card sometimes works OK and sometimes gives very badly distorted sound. If I go to Control Panel > Systems and Security > Troubleshoot Common Computer Problems > Run programs made for previous versions of Windows, it fixes the problem. But as soon as I open Cubase or open Premiere Pro the sound goes distorted again. I tried updating the driver and that cured it, but again opening Cubase makes it bad again. What is going on?

A:Distorted sound

May be time for an upgrade of the recording interface unit. I see posts of problems with old XP hardware on the recording forums I visit. Vista/Win7/Win8 handle some audio functions differently than XP and some functions that were available on XP are no longer there.

I have a recording studio with Sonar X3 and a USB connected Roland Octa-Capture for recording interface.

Not sure if this is the right place to be putting this thread but i am gonna go ahead and give it a shot and see if anyone can help me. For several months my sound has sometimes just gone completely away and will come back after awhile for no apparant reason. It did this every few weeks or so at it goes away more often out of no where and when it does work, it sounds distorted or just not right. Like if I am listening to a song the instruments will play clear but the person singing will sound far away. Or it is just plain distorted sounding. I have tried doing the help and support thing on the computer and that was no help, I did everything they told me to check. It isn't the speakers or anything like that either. I also updated the drivers. Could it be that I need a new sound card or something, I don't really know much about that kind of thing, if things like that need to be replaced sometimes. I could do it myself I am sure if I knew that is what was wrong with it. Any suggestions?
I have windows XP.

I'm having trouble with the sound when I play a DVD. When I play a CD or an MP3 or anything else, the sounds fine. It's only when I play a DVD, that the sounds distorted, and sounds 'wobbly'. Also, I've also got problems with monitoring sound when I'm recording. I can't hear anything.
I've had to reinstall everything on my PC because of a virus, but all the settings for the sound are ok, the mike volume is up, and nothing is muted. I used to be able to monitor what I was recording. I'm using Magix Audio Cleaning lab, to put some tapes and vinyl to CD. Anyone got any suggestions. Thanks.

I am using Windows 2000 and have a sony dvd drive. Suddenly, whenever I try to play media from this device, either dvds or avis, mpgs, audio cd's etc, the sound is distorted, with clicks and cracks. The images are ok. If I use another cd-drive, or copy the files to hard disk, the sound is ok. But every sound played in this device is distorted.

A:Dvd sound distorted

It may be there is a loose connection or a little corrosion on the pins connecting the drive to the sound card. The cable is small and usually is on the end opposite the power connector.

If you have a set of headphones try plugging into the front of the drive. Most drives place to plug in and a volume control for the plug along side it. If the audio is ok there then the problem is most likely somewhere other than the drive.

I have a Compaq Microsoft Media Center Edition computer running windows XP. Lately not only has my computer been booting up slowly and running slowly, the sound on my computer has been distorted and slow. It happens when I play anything that is on line (video, sound clips) and sometimes when I play iTunes (usually after the computer has been on for a while).
In attempting to fix the problem I have opened up all sound drives to check that they are on the correct mode. I have attempted to update the drivers (they were up to date), so then I uninstalled the Realtec AC'97 Audio driver. No progress after doing all these things.

Restore to a restore point before the problem started. If the distortion is still there that would point to a hard ware problem more than a software problem.

This isn't the first time it has happened. My computer is about a year and a half old. For the whole time I've had this computer (Averatec laptop) it has always had okay sound, as long as I didn't go into Standby. If I ever went into standby then brought my computer back out of it, the sound would become distorted. The next time I would restart or turn the computer off, then brought it back on, the sound would be okay.

Well today, when I got home, I turned on the computer as usual. I was browsing the web and noticed the little click sound that occurs when I click on links sounded funny. I figured I knew what it was so I went to listen to a song, and it was distorted just like when I go into and come out of standby.

The warranty is expired (was a year) and I don't think Averatec will help me any longer. Has this happened to anybody else? What can I do?

I think my sound driver is a Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver. If you need any other information from me please tell me what it is and where on my computer I can find it. Also, if anybody can show me a site where I could host a .wav file then I could record the sound and upload it for others to hear.

Thanks so much in advance for any help, and if I posted this in the wrong forum then please move it.

It was fine 3 days ago but I dont know what happened.. I also tested it with my headphones, and my headphones did the same, making some weird mosquito sound whenever I watch youtube vids or anything that requires sounds.. I tried my Dad's gaming headphone and it also does the same thing..

Anyone know what might be causing this? All my drivers are up to date. Anytime the DVD-ROM is spinning, all audio on my PC is VERY choppy and often slowed down also. I first noticed it during Itunes imports, and thought it might be specific to that program, but the same thing happened during a game installation, and DVD Playback (though to a lesser degree).

Here are my specs:
Athlon64 3200+
1 gb PC3200 RAM
VIA Integrated Audio - Analog Devices Soundmax

A:very distorted sound while reading from DVD-ROM

Choppy sound usually means that the audio application is not getting enough resource to operate properly. Sound of the applications you mention would use heavy processor and/or HD resources. If you are playing MP3's off of the HD this could be a problem.

If you have 2 HD's try separating your music library from your work HD, where you may be compressing or loading large files. Also depending on the activity, which controller the DVD is on may make a difference. likewise splitting 2 HD's to separate controllers may help. It just depends....

I'm leaning toward disk activity tho, since game installation is going to be mostly data transfer from CD to HD...keeping the controller(s) and the HD pretty busy.

I have logitech speakers and subwoofer which appears OK. Would welcome any suggestions. So called "geek" in local pub suggests installing sound card and switching oft builkt in audio set up Any views? Welcome suggestions/advice please. dave

A:sound distorted and crackling

That is a pretty old system; at least 3 generations of intel cpu. As to what is causing the problem, it can be a failing audio chip on the board, corrupted drivers, etc.

You can remove all audio drivers and install the driver from realtek and see if that helps.

I assume you have already checked speaker connections and tried the speakers on another system to see if it is a speaker problem or a problem with your system.

As for buying a sound card and disabling the onboard sound, that is fine however I would not be putting too much money into that old of a system. Do not buy one of the expensive creative sound cards; just get a basic one from newegg.

I am having a bit of a nightmare with my Dell PC - I am running Vista and recently reformatted it as the internet clock had stopped working, it was losing up to an hour a day - unfortunately the reformat has not solved that problem and created a new one - now all the sounds my PC make are slow and distorted - from the 'welcome' sound when the PB boots up to mp3 and CD playback - even the images on WMP are slow and distorted. I have tried downloading new drivers etc. but nothing seems to work, everything is slow and distorted on speakers and thru headphones - even the 'test' sounds are the same.
Can anyone help??

A:Sound slow and distorted

My first thought was that you need a new CMOS battery on the motherboard.

Did the Dell do this right after your reformat on some time later? If the former, you may have to do a backup and a clean format, if the latter, then try performing a system restore to the earliest point available.

Is it still losing time too? Replacing the CMOS battery may not be a bad idea.

First of all, I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to put this kind of problem ^_^; It's a little confusing.

Secondly, my problem!

My laptop (HP Envy dv6t-7200, with Windows 8) suddenly has a strange problem! It all started yesterday - I had a cheap pair of headphones accidentally break, but the headphone jack was still stuck inside the laptop! So I had to get tweezers to grip it and pull it out. Then I used a new pair of headphones and listened to some videos for a bit before I turned my computer off and went to go do other things. An hour or two later, I'm back on here and suddenly the sound is not working properly! When I play a video, if it has background music, that's pretty much all I hear. I have to turn the volume up on both the video and the laptop to be able to even understand what they're saying, and I still can't hear quite well - the background music or noise overpowers it. It's the same with music that has voices, too. I dunno what caused this, but I really hope someone can help me fix it!

I know it's for sure the laptop because I tried it with 3 pairs of headphones, and then used the headphones on my phone and 3DS and sound worked perfect. Also - this is just with headphones. When I just use my laptop's speakers, the sound is ok.

I appreciate you guys reading this, thanks.

Hey all! Ive been having this crazy issue that if I put my master volume over 50% it starts making this high pitch squelching noise and it only goes away if you mute it. Im using a Creative SB X-FI sound card but thats not the issue. Ive replaced it with 2 totally different sound cards with the same result. Went in and completely removed all drivers and reinstalled with the most up to date drivers with the same result. Ive even placed the different cards in different slots on the board. I dont understand. Plus to make issues worse my mic doesnt want to work either. Maybe there is a conflict on my board or something? Im at a loss. Help!!

A:Sound is distorted when over 50% volume

Time to remove the software, then use something like RegEdit to take off all remnants of the old install, and THEN reinstall the drivers... that will tell you if the issue is elsewhere requiring a reinstall of Windows... or a Repair install.

XP Media Edition

Just got a new hard drive. Installed all the software, drivers, and updates. Everything ran beautifully for a week. Last night when I tried to stream Pandora, I got this God awful distortion, like someone had messed with a mixer. The instruments are in front, the vocals in the background. I tried YouTube - anything streaming, same thing. Chrome, Explorer, Firefox same result.

Here's what I've done:

Checked the speaker connections and volume controls.
- The sound is fine as long as it's stored media.
Downloaded and reinstalled the audio drivers.
- No change. Still distorted when streaming.

What's next? Codecs? As if I *really* know what they are, I just know it's listed in device manager and I haven't messed with it yet.

Thanks in advance.

For reference, I'm using the PCI version of the Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer.

Lately my sound has randomly become distorted with a buzzing-like tone to it that gets progressively worse until I restart my computer. Also, at times the sound will just randomly mute until I use the Creative Console Launcher or Creative Audio Control Panel application to switch sound mode (presumably resetting the sound).

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

A:Sound garbled/distorted

Try reseating the Soundblaster card and see if that helps.

Reseat - with the PC powerd off, open the case and remove the Soundblaster card then reinstall the card making sure its fully and correctly seated.

I have been using my laptop for the past 3+ years without much problem with the sound system, but today it began to have rather scratchy/distorted sounds. For instance when I play music on Windows Media Player 10, or when the computer first starts up with the Windows sounds - in both cases the sounds become scratchy and/or distorted, and sometimes are played very slowly.

I'm not sure why this is happening. Could someone please advise me on this? Er, I am unfortunately quite bad at technical terms, so please explain as simply as possible *sheepish*. Thanks!! :)

Alright, so a few days ago, my laptop started to make a sort of crackling noise whenever a sound is played from it, whether it be a movie, a song, whatever. The noise only happens when I play something though. I've already tried reinstalling the sound driver, and that did nothing. I thought it might be my sound card, so I tried my roommates usb sound card, but the problem is still there. I know it's not the speakers, because it happens on my speakers, the built in laptop speakers and my headphones. Anyone got any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Well i have an Asus A7v8x motherboard with on board Avance AC '97 audio.

I hooked up a mic to my comp and it didnt work. After some research on google other people were having problems getting the mic to work with this motherboard aswell. They said the XP update messes up with mics somehow so just uninstall avance 97 and then reinstall it from the original asus installation cd.

I did that and the mic works, however now the sound from my speakers is distorted. Music always echos.

I have ati radeon 8500 all in wonder and the tv works fine. The sound works perfect. When i uninstalled somehow the sound for the tv went to AUX but after i changed it to LINE IN, it was all good.

Can anyone help with the audio? If i plug headphones to it mp3's sound perfect but once the headphones are taken off the normal sound has an odd echo.

Someone help please, this is getting annoying. I feel like im living in a cave with all this echo.

Hope someone can help and this is one of those stupid questions.
I am using XP and have not had any audio since installing broadband last September. However I found out I was in the wrong jack for that yesterday! I have just had my hard drive wiped and re-installed XP. When tested at work the speakers worked through headphones. Re-installed box at home with new TFT screen with inbuilt speakers and all was working fine but the system sounds seemed to go on forever! Logged out and re-logged in and since then all the sound is just a series of crackles be it CD/games or system. I know that my sound card is supported and digitally signed, the only thing wrong on the device list is a question mark on the Video Controller but this doesn;t appear to stop anything working. I've run the DirectX checks and some noise is heard but not the correct ones. Can anyone help me please.

A:Distorted Sound PC speeds up

Hi Bob, welcome!

Not sure how competant you are but take out the sound card or disable it in system manager.

Now use the PC as you have been to see if you get a repeat of the problem. This will help isolate the problem.

Hello. The sound is my Vista Bus. ed. is horrible. About 2 wks. ago it was working fine. I installed some Vista updates & it has been down hill every since then. I have googled for help, but nothing has helped.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks In Advance
P.S. This is Vista on Apple's BootCamp. The sound on the Mac side works just fine.

A:Distorted Sound in Vista

Apple's Boot Camp audio drivers are not generic or realtek audio drivers. If I were you I would put your Mac OS X install DVD into the DVD drive and reinstall Boot Camp on Windows to make absolutely sure the correct audio drivers are installed (also after reinstalling check Apple Software Update).

Another general audio tip is if possible to have the device transmitting the audio to the speakers (PC) volume very high and then have the speakers own volume at a level you are happy with to maximise sound definition.

I am getting bad distortion from all sounds coming out of my PC.

Ages ago I had to plug my speakers into the front panel headphone socket otherwise I would get speaker hiss, quiet sound & right speaker practically muted. This worked so I accepted it rather than trying harder to fix the problem.
I then realised that although the sound was good the stereo channels were switched, so I just switched the L/R speakers round manually, which was fine unless I used headphones which I can't wear "backwards".

Recently I added an Audigy2 value pci card to replace the onboard Legacy audio thinking that would solve it. Well the stereo is the right way round now, but I am getting bad distortion on all sound, as if the signal is being amplified twice. I can keep it under control by lowering the system volume and bass sliders, but the output is both very low & rubbish quality.

I have disabled the onboard sound in BIOS although I can't uninstall the drivers. Right clicking on "Legacy audio drivers" in device manager only gives options for "update driver", "scan for hardware changes" & "properties" whether it is enabled in BIOS or not.
The front panel connectors were still plugged in to the motherboard so I pulled them out, no effect.

I have all the latest drivers/BIOS & am getting no yellow !'s in device manager.

I am currently fretting whether it is a hardware or software problem, I would normally presu... Read more

there seems to be some problem with the mp3 files.whenever a mp3 file is played with winamp the sound seems to be skipping(fast forwarded).
i recently downloaded a file from the net and it contained an two .exe files . i ran one of them .but it suddenly disappeared and was nowhere to be found.
as a habit i always scan all the files that i download before running them .i have ESET smart security business edition but it did not detect any threat in them.since then the pc began to act strangely.i have windows XP sp2 and since then the shut down process had a problem.the series of events that take place during a normal shut down took place except that at the time when the pc must shut down a dark blue screen with the error message was read "windows logon process terminated unexpectedly with status of 0x00000000
the system has shut down"

i was desperate to solve the problem and ran SD fix.that solved only one of the two problems .the error message wasnt seen since then.but my audio still remains distorted.the twist in the tale is that when i play the audio with media player classic ,windows media player it seems to be ok.but when i transfer it into my portable mp3 player the the sound remains distorted.the windows environment seems to run fine except during the first two minutes.

hope someone looks into this matter at the earliest .

thank you
