Alright. New here. Never been too tech savvy so hoping for assistance. Also, my apologies to the staff if this is in the wrong section.

This problem that I'm having happens with every disk I purchase. Oddly enough, I can download software via websites just fine. And yes, in Hardware & Sound, it's set to "Play CDs or other media automatically".

Sooo, can I get somebody's 2 cents?

A:Software disks refuse to execute

Hello VLR, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Are you opening the disk from the Computer window and clicking on the program's setup.exe or install.exe type file to install it?

Could you give us some more details on exactly what you are trying to execute and how?

What should be a routine installation for AMD's GPU drivers now only results in this instead.

That is a screenshot from the latest 16.11.1 drivers right from AMD's site, yet the video drivers themselves won't even show up in the installer!. Potential problems with video drivers are usually solved by using Display Driver Uninstaller, followed by a fresh install. However, not even use of DDU is helping this time around. I have also attempted to use AMD's own Clean Install Utility, but this has not helped either.

I've tried installing as Admin, did not work. I've disabled Microsoft Security Essentials before trying to install, still didn't work. I've even disabled my Intel HD Graphics before trying to install these, with no improvements. I don't understand what's going on, and the only thing I can pick up from what the Install Manager is doing (or NOT doing, in this case), seems to be that it doesn't even think my video card is installed.

If it helps, my current AMD drivers are 16.9.2. I should say that while newer games do work with this version with few to no issues, a particular weekend closed beta test is asking that I update to the latest AMD drivers, hence the thread.

I can't figure it out but for whatever reason, my computer won't read any disks other than music cd's and movies. I spent over 2 hours trying to install TurboTax onto my computer the other day only to find that I can't load ANY of my cd-roms.

Hopefully it's just something wrong with the settings but I can't tell.

If it helps, when I open Device Manager, I see this:

Disk Drives
-ST3160812AS

DVD/CD-ROM drives
-HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GSA-H21N

I tried updating the driver for both and got nowhere. Thanks!

a 'work-around' you might use though,
from 'my computer' > right-click your cd / dvd unit > choose 'explore' > and in the right pane of the window that opens > choose 'install.exe' or 'install turbo tax.exe' [whatever it may be called] and double left-click it, then follow the prompts as in any install

Hi !

I am wondering what is the best database software able to do this specific function.

for exemple if there is 4000 entries or cards... that have an information regarding schedule and time of operation and non operation... the database will be able to sort or signal the entries that are suposed to be ON at 3 pm, 30 mns before, for exemple in function of there field of activity or location or any other details.

Just mainly the database should be able to run automaticaly with the clock and sort differently in function of the present time or another detail.

Sorry if my words are weird or unprecise, I'm not anglo native and not really programmer ...

But in advance thanks for your help
Frederic

Hi, can anyone link me to some software that will read my GPU's temp as i'm gonna overclock it and need to know when enough is enough, lol.

Thanks.

A:Software to read my GPU's temp????

if you're overclocking your GPU you're best to see when it starts causing screen artifacts not by how hot it is. Motherboard Monitor might be able to read the GPU temp if it has a sensor but it really depends on whether the plugin has been coded & whether your GPU has a sensor on it.
Also it would help to specifiy which card you have or even if its a Radeon or GeForce based card.
I use ATiTool for overclocking my Radeon. It is very easy to use & has some very good features (like Find Max Core & Max RAM speeds) and it has a built in Artifact Tester.

I was wondering with newer SSD's if it is correct or not that programs can read the temperature of an SSD.

Like you can with a HDD.

I am using a program called AIDA64 notice at times my two internal SSD's read 44c.

Two i have are:
Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive
Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive

Most say they do not get too hot or not really hot at all, due to no moving parts and less power consumed.
Never remember my HDD reaching past 37-38c

2.5" to 3.5" bracket i have fits 2 SSD's and makes them sit close to each other, one above the other in a 3.5" bay.
Pretty open around it, i have two case fans, nothing else it getting too hot, but it is summer time here and i do notice a difference compared to winter with rest of the components.

A:Can software read temps on SSD

They have a sensor built-in like HDDs that software can read. Speccy reads my Adata SSD. Always seems cooler than my hard drive, does warm up a tad if doing some intense read/writes. As long as S.M.A.R.T. reports it is within tolerance then shouldn't be anything to worry about.

I put a hard drive that was not accessible into a USB case an I can now see it. I'm guessing that something is corrupted on the HD rendering it unreadable. In the past I had software that could read a drive in this condition, but I can't remember its name.

Anyone know of anything free that can do this?

When I try to access the HD I am prompted that I need to format the drive. If I quick format the drive, then use an scanning/un-delete software will I then be able to see what is on the dive?

I would do what I was told to before but I cannot remember what i have to do again :/ I know it is in regedit some where but not sure on where to go after, Any help or advice would be great thank you. It will play cds but not dvds :/
thanx in advance

A:DVD will not read DVDs or DVD software but will play CDs

Do you have a Windows Vista or 7 install disk? Or even a restore disk if its a branded PC. All of those should be DVDs, so see if you can boot the computer from that disk (you won't actually go through any of the install process, just see if it boots from the disk). This will ensure that your dvd laser didn't die. The laser for cd and dvd reading are different, so it is possible that one could die while the other is still good.

You may be exactly right with it being a registry thing, but if you have a bootable disk that is a dvd we can easily rule out a hardware issue.

For some reason, my cd/dvd player has stopped working. Now my dvd player had always been finicky about which things it liked it play--after several years i found the need to reinstall windows, and then i installed the latest firmware from sony style, and, presto, everything worked fine.

i was able to install adobe creative suite no problem. that was a few months ago. in the meantime, i can tell you that i had a nasty hacktool.rootkit infection--which i seem to have gotten rid of. although i still have some issues (such as my symantec antivirus is running but wont show up in the taskbar, and i don't always get the required pop-ups when putting cds or usb drives in). i've also recently installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled iTunes.

so since i noticed yesterday that out of nowhere my cd/dvd drive wasn't working what so ever, i checked the device manager. no problems. i then uninstalled the hardware, and scanned for hardware changes. that led me to the yellow exclamation point on my cd/dvd drive, and this message:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

I googled this error message and came up with this thread:
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/35761/
--which says iTunes may have caused it. and it recommends deleting some registry files to resovle it.

So I go open regedit--to:

I've had this read-only problem before but this is different.

Usually turning off the UAC does the trick

This time I added Phtoshop Lightroom to my system. For a couple days everything was working fine.

For some reason today when I went to use it an error screen appeared saying it couldn't use catalogs that were in folders that are read-only.

Since then I've tried everything under the sun to get them to not be read only but nothing works.

The frustrating thing is that people keep saying that it doesn't matter that the folder is read-only because the files are not read only. This is true but as long as Lightroom thinks it is it won't load.

What do I do? Why would this happen suddenly? Do I change the folders? If it's a problem with LR how do I get around it. It just won't load without a catalog, and all of my folders are the same (read only).

Thanks in advance.

A:Software won't accept folders because they are read-only

Hello Daniel,

Welcome to the Vista Forums.

Have you checked to see if you have proper permissions to make changes to the folder. Sounds like somehow, I haven't a clue how, the folder/s may have gotten there permissions changed. If you want to check right click the folder/properties/security tab. What I would do is to try taking ownership of the file first. Info here if needed: Context Menu - Take Ownership

Hope this helps,
Gary

I'm trying to get some old software called Larson's Middle School Math to run on some newer computers in a computer lab, but it does not work. It will run sometimes, but will always give the following error when entering the program, or after using it for a few minutes, but sometimes will run just fine after going through the error a few times. Here is the error I get:

MSM232: MSM232.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c910cae" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

If I click OK or cancel, it closes the program.

I have some other XP computers with less memory that this runs perfectly fine on. So far I've tried messing with the virtual memory settings, also tried turning off virtual memory, but then I get a different Director error saying machine requires at least 3MB of virtual memory that won't even let the program run. I've tried setting virtual memory to 3000, still didn't work. I also tried the various compatibility modes with no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions to try?

Thanks for your help.

Hello and thank you beforehand.

The story goes like this: once I had to submit a school project and required VMware to emulate Linux (since I was given a Toshiba laptop with the condition of not messing up with it beyond installing programs), and first VMware DID NOT work at all, and then the CD/DVD drive stopped working. I know it has to be VMware because I installed it in a desktop PC and the same thing happened, that, until I uninstalled the damn thing (which turned out as such a blessed remedy!). When I tried to uninstall in the Toshiba laptop it won't allow me to do so. I even entered into safe mode, but as you may know, Vista does not allow permission to use the uninstaller... in safe mode.

I've been trying everything, but I can't mess around in the system since it's not mine. By the way, if this helps as a hint: every time I get a disk into the drive, nothing happens until I reboot, kind of like it only reads BEFORE Windows is fully running.

That's all and thanks to everyone again.

installing a reputable software app failed and now my c drive is read only and although i can use most of my original programs, i cannot change anything, cannot choose a restore point as it say the administrator (me!) has stopped me doing this.

I cannot start my acronis to get my latest backup (on external drive), yet i can access my email and other programs.

The windows system is actually on a small ssd drive for speed although my C drive is on my normal harddisk.

i get the fault code 0x800704b3 when trying to access programs such as Wise 365.

My Hyper drive manager will not work either

I can copy and paste and am copying all of the files in My Documents to an external hard drive (where all my Acronis backups are.

I have a sinking feeling that the only option left to me is a complete reinstall somehow as all the options seem to be blocked to me (Restore, Refresh etc)

Getting C unlocked would be a bonus.

I know it's a long shot, but if anyone can help i would be grateful.

Thanks in advance

Paul

A:C drive read only after software install fails

Ok lets give this a shot...

disconnect from the internet

disconnect the external harddrive

uninstall the software that started the problem

if you are unable then reboot and start the computer in safe mode then uninstall that program

restart the computer with internet and external harddisk disconnected

do you have access to your system now?

Create a restore point

reconnect to the internet

reconnect the harddrive if you wish

Check operation of your system, make sure everything is ok now..

If you want to try to re-install that software, go ahead.

Ok,
So i've just changed my cpu cooler and thermal paste from the ocz tempest to the zalman cnps 9500 nt with some nice smoooooth as5. Before my readings in Nvidia's "ntune" were 51/52c were all i got out of it, i tried "Everest" it reported the same, i then checked the readings in bios, this revealed my cpu was actually running at a much more believable 31c. I failed to realise it could have been a software problem.

Now that i've changed my cpu cooler, the software still reports the same 51/52c reading but the bios reports a more nicer figure of 25c...what's going on? is it a software problem? if it is what can i do about it? how come the bios reads a more believable figure? thank you for any help provided.

A:software failing to read cpu temps correctly

Sounds like the software to me. One logical explanation is that while your OS is loaded and lots of processes are running, your processor would probably be doing a lot more than it does while in the BIOS (when no OS is loaded). However, twice the temp is definately a big difference!

Hey folks,

So many devices these days come with a driver on a mini-CD. My laptops (Acer and Toshiba) take forever to access them, then think they're blank and ask to format them.

In Googling this I found a guy who said he fixed this problem by reinstalling Roxio. Said his computer came with it but he'd uninstalled it cause he never used it. That it must "turn on" a feature in W7 or something, cause after he reinstalled it, his computer could read mini's.

When I got both my laptops I wiped all partitions (including the hidden "recovery" one), re-partitioned the way I wanted, and reloaded all drivers and W7 (64 Ultimate). The DVD players in both laptops have a central spindle, so they are designed to read mini-CDs. They DO detect them, but again, think they are blank.

Anyone heard of Roxio or other software being required to read mini's? Thanks much.

PS I have a lot of media software installed but not Roxio. (Nero, ImageBurn, Handbrake, Ashampoo, etc.)

A:Is Media Software Required to Read Mini-CDs?

Windows should be able to read your mini-CDs . You might want to eject the CD and place it in the middle . It will take a few seconds to read the disc due to it size. I never had an issue with mini-CDs being read.

I have a CD-RW that is formatted for the InCD program that is bundled w/ Nero... it formats the CD-RW so I can add, move, and delete just like a floppy disc. I was mvoing some files off my HD onto the CD-RW -- it moved the 1st file and most of the 2nd file. Then it stopped and said it couldn't find the correct path for the 2nd file. It looked like the file had already copied to the CD, but it was also still on the HD. So I assumed it had a problem deleting the file on the HD after it was moved.

When I tried to access the files on the CD-RW to make sure they were both there, the computer crashed. I rebooted, and now it won't read any of the files that are on the CD-RW It appears to be a blank CD. When I try to open it thru InCD, all it does is ask me if I want to format the blank CD. So my guess is that the program isn't reading the header on the CD becuz the header was corrupted when InCD was trying to re-write it after adding the 2 additional files.

So how do I gain access to files that are on the CD-RW? I had a lot of stuff on there I don't want to lose... I'm sure it's all still there, it's just a matter of getting the program to recognize that the files are there.

A:InCD packet-writing software from Nero won't read CD

ISOBuster may give some access to the CD, but this is one reason why you should never use packet writing unless the data is of no consequence.
http://www.isobuster.com/

It is the most unreliable form of data storage, one for which the CD was not originally designed. A CD-RW means ReWritable (erase and re-use) not Read-Write. They are OK in that latter mode generally.

I suspect you are quite right in your diagnosis that the TOC is corrupt, which means there is now just a heap binary data on the CD with no easy way of determining the start and end of each individual file.

I spent a while searching for such a software on google and downloaded and installed over 10 applications including Microsoft's Sysinternals Suite, Crystal disk info, IOmeter, OpenHardwareMonitor, Process Explorer, and several more, and none of them seem to have this function. I was surprised that I wasn't able to find any such function over many google searches but it's possible I was just using poor search terms.

Does anyone know such a software\program\utility that will monitor my disk read\write usage and break it down per drive so I can monitor it during backups, transfers and other disk operations?

Thanks

Hello to all

I am hoping that someone here can help me with my problem. I have tried other sites and did a search in Google and I have not found an answer to the problem at hand.

My system:
I have a clone computer with:
ASUS motherboard A8N-SLI DeLuxe
2GB Corsair RAM Memory
2 Nvidia 7600LS Video cards
2 Western Digital 250GB hard drives set on a RAID 0 configurations.

The problem:
Some time ago I purchased Acronis True Image version 8.0. I never had the chance to use it until this week. My computer slowed to a crawl and then it crashed. Days before, I had made a backup of my OS so I decided to restore it from the backup that I stored in an external HD. I have two Western Digital 250GB hard drives configured as RAID 0. The program restored the image successfully so I restarted the computer after it finished. Unfortunately now the computer will not boot up. The hard drives are okay, no problems at all, however I keep getting the following message:

?A Disk Read Error Occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to Restart?

My questions are these: Has anyone encountered a situation similar to mine and if so, what did you do about it? Can anyone tell me if it?s possible to purchase two new HDs identical to the ones I have, recreate the RAID 0 and then plug in the two hard drives that I have problems with? Will my computer recognize them and allow me to get my data? Or can I reload Win XP Pro on a new HD and then use a program like OnTrak Data Recovery to recuperat... Read more

Run your Windows disk, selecting R for Repair Mode, not Repair Console. It will replace the Windows stuff without touching your files. You will have to reinstall some Windows Updates.

I have a high end HP that came with Vongo installed, which to me is a virus b/c I didn't want it and when I went to uninstall it, it ruined my computer. I have Norton anti-virus and absolutely no viruses on my laptop.

Here's what happened...I logged in to my account in XP, Vongo instantly starts trying to install itself and it says it needs "Flash 8 in order to work." There is a cancel button and when you hit that, it starts to reinstall itself AGAIN and you're stuck in this endless loop. As I was trying to uninstall it, my computer froze up and when I re-booted, my computer is now locked in safe mode or some kind of "MODE" that I can't figure out. THe XP login screen looks normal and I can login in fine, but once I'm logged in, the taskbar at the bottom looks like windows 98 and none of my "Services" work - I can't remove software, I can't access the Help and Support, I can't get online, I have no sound card, I get that "Beep" sound like it's an old 80's computer.

Under "Device Manager" nothing shows up...NOTHING.

When I run msconfig and click on "Normal Startup" the computer loads the same way everytime...like its in safe mode even though during the boot sequence everything looks normal. My resoultion is normal, the screen icons look normal, but I have no sound device, no internet, no "services".

Hello all, this is my first post here. I've been looking for a good solution to my problem for a long time and I've scanned the internet high and low looking for someone with a similar problem to mine, though it seems my problem is... unique.

I'm running with Windows XP Media Center Edition on a Dell Dimension E310. It's not the best of computers, and one that I intend to replace soon. But I've generally had good luck with it and have encountered no issues that weren't fixable. However, this problem is different. It's been affecting my computer or a while now, and I've been able to ignore it for some time.. but now it's beginning to get on my nerves and I decided it was time I address it.

My problem is pretty much stated in the title. Except it's unique in that... it appears that .EXE files I have before a certain time and date (That I don't know of) Work perfectly fine. World of Warcraft, Firefox, Winamp- they all work completely fine. But that's where it ends. Any new file I download from the internet, be it a program or installation .EXE simply does not open. When I double click on the file, I will get an hourglass and then it will disappear as if I never clicked anything in the first place. I've tried several methods of fixing it, but to no avail so far. Tried fixing my registry, tried to add .EXE as a valid file but nothing works.

I've recently done a virus scan and my computer is clean according t... Read more

The following 5 games (among others) will no longer run on my computer:
-Diablo II
-Warcraft III
-Unreal Tournament
-Unreal Tournament 2003
-Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Recently, my friend gave me a Midnight Club 2 demo but my computer refused to run it when the game was about to begin. I assumed the problem was graphical so I downloaded the newest version of Direct X (9b) from the microsoft webpage. This did not solve the problem, however, but it started a new one... without warning, Corel WordPerfect 6.1 decided not to work anymore. My friend suggested that I get new drivers for my graphics card...

So I went to nVidia.com to get the newest drivers for my nVidia GeForce 2 MX200. I specifically downloaded the drivers that were directly compatible with Windows XP, but as I ran the install program Windows said that the product was not tested for compatibility and warned me to stop. I continued, knowing that XP is full of crap.

When the new drivers were installed, Midnight Club 2 and Corel WordPerfect 6.1 started working but the games listed above stopped working properly or not at all - but each of them had their own distinctive errors. I'll get to that later.

Everytime I booted up my computer after getting the new drivers, I got an error from a program that I identified to be "Wild Tangent" but I didn't know what it was or where to find it. After searching around some tech support sites, I found that I could safely uninstall "Wild Tangent"... Read more

A:5 games now refuse to run

Well, I see you're all as stumped on this problem as my tech-y, computer-whiz friends were. Their advice was ultimately to reformat everything.

I hate that word... but it seems like I had no other options. However, I began uninstalling programs that I didn't want in a last effort to get things working again. A few of those things included Global Ops, American Army, Rogue Spear, some crappy internet games, some crappy games from my "1000 games CD," and some drivers from my "Creative WebCam." With a sad outlook, I then double-clicked the program file for Unreal Tournament 2003...

And wouldn't you know it? It friggin' worked! I then tried Unreal Tournament... that worked, too! Then I tried Jedi Outcast... my god! It works!

But the goodness ends there. Corel WordPerfect 6.1 started acting up again (sometimes it exits out with a critical error as I open the program) and my Blizzard games still have the same error from before. I investigated the problem further by trying my StarCraft CD... but that game worked fine.

So I assume my problems are now mostly limited to "newer Blizzard games." Of course, the trouble-shooting files for Diablo II don't offer much help for XP users and the WCIII guides felt every bit as worthless (at "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" select "PIO only" or "DMA if availiable"? Which do I select? Does it really friggin' matter? You suck, Blizzard).

Yeah... anyway, thanks to everyone who thou... Read more

Have you tried using Windows Update to install/update the latest driver from Microsoft? Also if that doesn't work, you could try running a program called Driver Sweeper (as an administrator) to clear out any old drivers.

For no apparent reason, it seems.

The majority of websites i visit work perfectly fine, ala this one. But when i attempt to access certain sites; Youtube, or RugbyDump for an example; The site either won't load at all(Youtube) and gives me 'Problem Loading Page' message, or only half the site will load(RugbyDump).

It's not a problem with my Firewall. I've ran a few anti-virus programs and found nothing malicious. I've also looked around the net for people with similar problem and seen replies suggesting it's a Java problem.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I will post one of those 'Hijackthis' logs when i return in a few minutes.

Hi there

Win 7 64bit
Aspire 5251-1513 laptop
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250

I downloaded Catalyst drivers 11.1(1/26/11)
I removed the display adapter and related drivers in the hardware panel
(reboot into safe-mode)
I ran Driver Sweeper and selected ATI
(reboot)
I ran the Catalyst executable as administrator.
(reboot)
I have no driver.

I have tried this many different ways(both the individual driver and the whole shebang), but the end result is the same. I am now running on the stock Win 7 driver.

I'm not sure what else to try and would love some suggestions on how I might get some drivers installed for this card.

thanks,
json

A:ATI drivers refuse to install

In device manager, under Display Adapters, is it showing your ATI card correctly? If so, when you right click it and select properties, what driver is it showing?

I've used ATI cards for years, and from time to time a new version will be borked up. I haven't downloaded this latest one yet so I don't know if it's got problems.

A possibility is when you select properties, then check "Roll Back Driver" and see if it will take you to the one you were last using. Unless you use the Catalyst Control Center, you could just download the driver itself and try installing that.

When I'm installing new versions I don't remove the display adapter or drivers. I run Driver Sweeper, as you did, then run the new download.

Hello all, I'm having some weird problem - probably caused by a virus or something. Anyway, I have scanned my computer, with 2 different Anti-Trojan applications, both found many infected items and removed it. now everything seems to be cleaned. Thing is, while trying to load google.com or bing.com - both sites wont load - it just hangs. I tried from 3 various browsers. When I put both sites IP addresses in the host file - it works! How can I get rid of this hassle??? Thanks in advanced. Nir.

A:Websites refuse to load

It might be a DNS cache error. Copy the following into Notepad, and save to the desktop as "Flush.bat" minus the quotation marks.

Quote:
@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Right-click the bat file and select "Run as Administrator". Your computer should automatically restart. If not, restart it.

Never hurts to check to be sure that no viruses remain. If yuu have not done so already, download, install, update and run Malwarebytes Antimalware.

A:Firefox and IE refuse to work!

Try uninstalling/re-installing IE and Mozilla, if not try and get the latest versions of those browsers and see if that helps. If not go to IE, then go to tools, then go to Security tab, and set everything to default. Also try deleting any temporary internet files, caches, all that sort of stuff. A good software to do that is CCleaner, it's available for free download, or you can just do it manually by going to Internet Properties (right click on your default browser on your start menu) and clear all the cookies and saved files and temporary files.

Let me know if this works or not

Hello.

I recently installed a copy of Windows Vista Home Basic and I'm now trying to wrestle with the system drivers. After the Nvidia card magically started working, I moved onto the audio. There currently isn't any so I followed some instructions and uninstalled the UAA then installed the latest Realtek audio drivers.

However, after each and every restart, the computer will place the UAA, ignoring the RealTek Drivers I'm installing. Please could someone help? I'm at a loss. Nothings co-operating and I'm not enough of a trouble-shooter to force harmony.

Specs:

- Windows Vista Home Basic
- AMD Turion 64 X2 duel core TL-62
- Nvidia GeForce 9300M G (is currently changing it's mind everytime I boot up about working correctly).
- 4GB

Lastly, I cannot get hold of another copy of Windows Vista or Windows 7, right now. I'm stuck with this and have to figure out how to fix this computer as is. Changing to another OS is out of the question too unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks. Good luck.

A:Audio Drivers refuse to do anything useful

Download Windows Vista drivers from the PC manufacturer's website if it's a brand-name PC. If they don't have any Windows Vista drivers for your PC model you won't be able to get all the hardware working with Windows Vista installed on it.

Hello everyone!

I got a very strange problem which nobody else seems to have had before:

Some programs cannot be started normally. If I open them, they usually close themselves within a few seconds. The cursor indicates some loading, and the current explorer windows loses focus - it looks like a new window is opening any second. But nothing happens. The process is shown in the Taskmanager, but only for a few seconds.
Now, if I use Windows 98 compatibility mode, and only on this mode, it suddenly works. All other modes don't but, Win98 does - the programms now start correctly, but the programs think they are running on Win98, so some features don't work.
These programs aren't working in that manner so far:

Google Earth
Teamspeak 3
Mumble
Origin

There are probably more. Origin is interesting: Some months ago, I used Sandboxie to launch it, which made it work even without compatibility mode. But after some update of Origin, I cannot run it that way anymore. Win98 mode works of course - but then I cannot install or play Games which require Windows 7.

It's really strange that these programs all show the same symptoms. I guess I have killed some driver or something, but sfc /scannow says all is fine.

So... anybody got an idea?

A:Certain Programs refuse to launch

Welcome to the forums! Well, I was going to suggest a sfc/scannow but I see you're already ran it. How long have you had this problem? Is it "new"? If so, have you considered a system restore to a point before this started? Have you tried uninstalling the affected programs and reinstalling them?

Hello,

I am on Win 7 x64 with 16GB installed RAM. The whole amount is recognized by the system with no issues. Resmon only shows 80MB as "hardware reserved".

The problem is when I get near 8GB usage, I start getting low memory system warnings, then apps start crashing and so on. Resmon still shows at least 6GB as "standby" at that point.

It does however show very low amounts of "free" memory, altho from what I managed to google, standby and free shouldn't really make any difference in terms of what's available to the apps, as standby is just unused memory containing cached data which may be freely replaced at any point.

One thing to note, I have pagefile disabled completely - not sure if that matters.

Other than that, the system is perfectly stable. No indication of issues with RAM or anything else.

I've had some tough days with malware the latest day.

I use three scanners: Avira AntiVir, eScan (MWAV) and HouseCall. The stuff found by HouseCall and AntiVir doesn't seem to come back, because these scanners come up clean when I scan with them again (after a computer restart). However, some stuff found by eScan keeps coming back after I restart the computer. Some of the stuff found by eScan are Possible Fujacks-type Worm, zlob Trojan-downloader, gain.gator Spyware/Adware and look2me Adware. Even though eScan says that it has removed them, at a new scan after a computer restart, it finds the two last-mentioned things again and again (and says again that it has removed them!).

Do I notice the presence of this malware? Yes. The computer makes a lot of noise like when it is preforming a heavy task for no apparent reason (probably contacting daddy and/or download new malware). It tries to unprotect spyware sites/cookies which Advanced Windows Care has listed under spyware, and thus blocked them. It tries to change my standard browser from Firefox to Internet Explorer. Norton AntiVirus doesn't seem to autostart anymore (obviously the malware doesn't know of Avira AntiVir). These are some things I've noticed for certain, there are some other "suspect" behavior, as well as there probably are things I haven't noticed.

So what can I do to get rid off this? It seems like my computer is deep in the grip of the malware, so I gotta win it back! ... Read more

I use Windows XP and I know I can only use ico files for icons. Here is my recurring problem:

Sometimes - maybe 50% of the time - when I download and, when necessary, extract ico files, they will not display. For a long time, I just quit trying - but this morning I came across some icons I'd really like to use. I downloaded them. Some open, some do not. The collection I liked the most will not display (neither did some of the others).

If I choose Show Tumbnails or Icons from Windows Explorer, I just see the hated generic Windows icon. If I double click on the file, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer gives me the "No preview available." message. If I drag the ico file to the desktop - nothing - same little generic icon.

Probably, I am doing something wrong but I have no idea what it is - OR - I wouldn't be posting here, now would I? Can anybody help me out?

Thanks.

A:Ico Files Refuse to Open

I would try Irfanview. I used to be able to open and resize or simple edit and save as .ico again. The ones that don't display may be off-size or be non-conforming in some other way. I think most .ico files in windows should be 32x32 or 48x48.

If they won't open or aren't viewable in Irfanview...I dunno.

I recently bought Spyware Detector and it is now finding two Trojans which it calls Trojan.Backdoor. Whilst I can quarantine both Trojans if I then scan again they are both back. I have repeatedly quarantined them but they keep coming back.
The references are hkey_local_machine\software\classes\scrfile\sh and hkey_local\machine\software\classes\regfile\st.

I have done a HiJack scan and I would appreciate it if someone could have a look at it and tell me how I can eliminate these Trojans. AdAware, Spybot and Spyware Doctor do not show either of these "Trojans" which makes me a bit suspicious.

Hello,
Okay I have two hard-drvies both with OS's both with XP SP2. I do lots of images work and stuff on one harddrive and the other for programing.

On my Second System (the one I use for Imaging) it has a problem. There are about 8 images on the other hard-drive and I need to access so I try to copy them over.. doesn't work I go on to my first system (programming system) and I copy the files over to second system.

I get on the second and I still can't view, copy, rename, or move. So I grab one of the images (first system, programming) and put it on the other harddrive and rename it to "123450789" and get on the second system (imaging system) and FINILLY I SEE IT.

I get this error message when trying to copy those certain files...
Windows XP (Second System said:

Cannot copy Windows Grass: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

And NO the files are not in use and NO there not write-protected and NO the disk is not full.

I hope someoen can give me ideas on this one I tried everything from rebooting to everything possible and my computer is virus free!!

I'm confused on this one totally!!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or anything,
Michael

Leboblond,

What model computer are you having a problem with?

You can try the second option (that has the tools icon) and see if there is a way to refresh, perform some sort of start up repair, or get into safe mode to perform a system restore to before you installed McAfee and the issue presented itself.

I still havent got SP1 on my laptop! Its a Toshiba A660, Windows 7 home premium. 32 bit.

I have tried to download it and found it has jacked up my data usage through the roof, so it must have downloaded something, but it then shows it 'failed'. (about 100 times, no kidding!) Iv tried the 'stand alone'
download but dont understand which one I should get, it seems the numbering system doesn't actually say
'windows 7, 32 bit SP1' but a coded version.

A:Windows 7 refuse to download SP1

Have you worked your way through this KB article.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2498452

The download link is at the end. I think it is a combined download with all versions of win 7 SP1, so it is quite large if you are worried about your data cap and one of the fixes on the page may fix your windows update issue so could be worth trying first.

Some drivers are not signed and Window 7 will refuse to load them.
What to do? Turn on test signing which allows Windows 7 to load unsigned drivers. To enable this you have to open a command prompt as administrator and type the following command:

Code:
C:\>bcdedit -SET TESTSIGN NO

I recently upgraded to firefox 2.0, only to find that the new version absolutely refused to open any pages, instead displaying the usual "unable to connect" error. I've looked at the connection settings, and they're identical to how they were in the old version (direct connection, no proxies). Unable to fathom what might be causing this, I downloaded Opera (V9.0, I think), only to find the same problem occurred, no matter what I did.

All the while, IE6 has worked fine (as did Firefox, untile I upgraded it), so I've ruled out a hardware problem, I've disabled Norton IS and double checked the default firewall to make sure they had nothing to do with this problem, but it's made no difference, so I'm trying to think what other processes might be blocking it. All I can think of aside from that is that it might have somnething to do with my router configuration (something I know very little about), but I'm rather doubtful.

The question is, how can my connection selectively be blocking certain browsers, while allowing others to connect without problems?

A:New browsers refuse to work

In fact, can someone first point me to a program that'll show me what's blocking outgoing connections by web browsers?

So i just got myself a 'netis wf2412' router and set up my local network .

A 3g modem is plugged into my pc, so i can connect to internet using it. My 3g connection is also shared to my router via a lan cable. My router is set up to work as a wifi access point, so i can connect my laptop to it and browse internet on it as well.

The problem is, i cannot load any website on my laptop(pc is fine), excluding these two:
google.com
youtube.com(videos don't load tho)

I can ping any website, but when i try to load one, it just timeouts. I've found and tied a lot of ways to fix this, but nothing helps.

Can anyone help me?

So im running Windows 7 64bit Home Premium and mostly playing games and such things on Steam and Rockstar Social Club (GTA)
I was doing a pingplotter test for my ISP along with TCPoptimizer which i usually do on all my computers without problem.
After tcpoptimizer ran i needed to restart the pc and in the same moment Firefox were automatically closed by windows
After that these issues appeared. First mozilla firefox icon were gone so i ran a Icon cache rebuild script and that fixed the issue on that part..
ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
del "%iconcache%" /A
However
1.  Firefox were not fast....   could take 2 minutes before google appeared when Google Chrome loads google.se in 1second  (100/10) connection
2. Firefox.exe   does not close when the browser is exited. The process remains in taskmgr
3. Whenever i close firefox and need to start it again i first haft to delete the firefox.exe instance in taskmgr....  wtf
I tried:
Clearing CCleaner temp/prefetch and uninstallting Firefox and all related files
Deleted all firefox related files in both folders, %appdata%  and Regedit  without any effect
because of this i strongly think ive been infected somehow but i ran Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro and they came up empty so what can cause this strange behavior suddenly

I ran Hijackthis in Safe mode, and I even tried to maually delete the registry keys but regedit gave an error saying it couldn't delete!

I have run full scans with adaware, spybot and AVG 7 free and they all come up clean (spybot keeps reportiong a DSO explit but I think thats another issue).

The computer is Win2k with all critical patches applied.

The specific irritation I am dealing with at the moment is the fact that I have not opened Outlook (2010) on my laptop in ... well, a long time. So, now I have a tonne of new email notifications pouring in, and they will not shut up.

First, I tried setting the Windows New Mail Notification to 'no sound': no effect. I restarted Outlook with no effect; I restarted my PC with no effect. Next, I tried disabling all the system sounds: no effect. Again, I restarted Outlook and the PC with no effect. Then, I remembered to check Outlook's localised settings and unselected 'play a sound': no effect. Once again, I restarted Outlook and the PC with no effect. (Also, this problem is not isolated to Outlook because, after each system restart, other system alert sounds have made noise).

I am at a complete loss. I could simply mute the sound, but I am trying to watch some DVDs. This is, in fact, an old problem that I could not be bothered resolving previously, but now I want it fixed.

A:System Sounds Refuse to be Disabled

Disabling (no systems sounds) should take care of it. That is how I have my PC set as I also use it for my recording studio. I have Outlook 2003 and I don't get any incoming mail sounds, or any other Windows sounds.

This is my setup:

When this happens I have to reboot up to 5 or 6 times before things work. Once things do work then they don't play up till I shut down again.

this problem has 3 progressive stages;

originally , closing and restarting both browser solved the problem.

but recently, restarting still had the problem, the only apparent way out was to reboot the computer.

and as of yesterday, even rebooting doesn't work, neither browser will access the internet, although pings both by name and ip still work. also all servers shown in ipconfig/all are still pingable.

this makes me wonder if it is time for COMBOFIX... I used that on friend's computer to get rid of all the spyware malware etc that had accumulted on her system, with no antivirus running.

further details are below - I would really appreciate some assistance with this!
I do have access to the internet as you can see, at my work computer.

Question: for some time I have had a browser problem, where after some time of operation, both firefox and ie do not respond.
this in spite of the fact that my OE email works fine, I can ping from a dos box by name and ip, DHCP, DNS, GATEWAY, are all pingable.
each browser behaves differently; with firefox, when I click on a link on an existing page, the cursor goes busy for an instant, and ff returns an empty window, with 'done' at the bottom.
ie returns 'cannot access this page, try the following', also with 'done' at the bottom.
in firefox I CAN access some secure sites; research shows this is because secure sites use port 443, instead of port 80.

now this problem used to be a minor ... Read more

A:ff, ie, intermittently refuse to access internet.

Combofix is certainly worth a try, and three others that are top notch are Avira Antivirus, Malwarebytes Antimalware, and SuperAntispyware.

Just having surfing blocked is very virus-y sounding though it doesn't always have to be that.
One clue is to go to your windows hosts file (just called "hosts", can be edited in notepad) and see if it has references to sleazy-sounding websites.
It should be fairly clean with just some commented stuff and a localhost entry.

When you google, try "browser can't surf", I think can't surf is the magic phrase that brings a lot of possibly helpful google results.
As a techy person you probably already thought of this but make sure you either aren't running any firewall/internet security software, or make
sure your existing antivirus/security software didn't get a firewall feature enabled by accident.

I'm having a strange problem playing back videos from CDs that I've burnt.

(I am usually trying this with Windows Media Player 10, but none of the other programs like VLC or XviD work either).

Usually what happens when I try to play the videos on the disc I get "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file could not be found." (Error Message C00D109B - the Web Help page tells me that either I am missing codecs or the data is corrupted).

What confuses me about that is:

* I can play the videos perfectly well when they're on my computer before I burn them, so it shouldn't be a codec problem.

* The burnt CDs, that my computer wont read, work perfectly on other people's computers that I try, so it shouldn't be a problem with data corruption.

* My CD drive reads all other discs perfectly well - ranging from audio CDs and computer games to CDs burnt by other computers - and repeated uses of CD Lens Cleaner discs make no difference; so I can't see it being a problem with my CD drive either.

On rare...very rare...occasions it'll work. However 90% of the time it does this, and I'm wasting a lot of CD-Rs burning things that my computer won't read.

I've run out of ideas as to what the problem could be, or where it's coming from. If anyone else has any suggestions then I would be most grateful.

A:Burnt CD-Rs refuse to play; where does the problem lie?

Try another brand of discs.

Hi, all,

I'm using a PC with windows XP and Firefox as my browser. Yesterday I started seeing a pop-up ad on any site I visited where the firefox add-on AdBlockPlus was disabled that linked to adserving(dot)cpxinteractive(dot)com/[String of Characters]. It usually said, "you are missing a plugin to play videos" and had an update button. Two or three times when I tried to open a normal link to a new tab, I was taken to an incorrect page that web of trust marked as dangerous and I left without getting a look at it (this hasn't happened before and one of those instances was on this site). When AdBlock is activated, the pop-up is present on most sites but invisible and inactive (the cursor recognizes it's there and if it happens to be sitting on a proper link I'm trying to click, nothing happens until I scroll it out of the way). Here's a screencap of the ad with it's scrollover link displayed and one of its silhouette on a darkened page with adblock enabled:

I was trying to fix a hardware issue with my computer (was getting BSODs). Now all my audio drivers are uninstalled and so are my CD/DVD drives! And guess what? Windows refuses to reinstall them! (all fail to install on a restart)

And I quote: "Device driver software was not successfully installed. Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed."

List:
ATAPI DVD A DH20A4P ATA Device
TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H652M ATA Device
NVIDIA High Definition Audio (x5)
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 (8851)
Realtek High Definition Audio-failed
MS Streaming Clock Proxy
MS Streaming Quality Manager Proxy
MS Streaming Service Proxy
MS Streaming Tee/Sink-to-Sink Converter (x2)
MS Trusted Audio Drivers

Note: Currently both drivers are showing as "CD-ROM Drive" in Device Manager, and all audio devices currently have the yellow exclamation symbol.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers with no success. Any way that you can think of to help me out will be appreciated.

A:Audio drivers refuse to install?

Drastic - but

In 'device manager' > 'system devices'
Uninstall/delete 'PCI Bus'

reboot

Don't worry, coz it forces Win(7) to find/load majority of it's device drivers again!

See if that works. It will need to connect to the internet too to download latest drivers etc!

Do not load older drivers from CD - unless they are for SATA/Raid hard drive at new install.

Are you sure bios settings are correctly set up and haven't 'glitched' and reset?
