mistaken type bcdedit /delete id, instead of /delete value id...

Q: mistaken type bcdedit /delete id, instead of /delete value id...

So fist i had some problems after some crashs, and then i enable safe mode though windows it self(msconfig) but then for shit reason win ask for passwords, it doesn't ask for PIN of other options when on safe mode....so i got stuck at that.....cause i never use psd, neither have used hotmail, on gmail for years....so i tryed to disable that dam thing, but by a mistake i type "bcdedit /delete {id}" instead of "bcdedit /deletevalue {id}" Now i have no boot for sure....of course....right after i press enter, and restart i realize it... i feel that on my nuts right after that hahaha

So, can i fix that? After that i'll need more help, but a diferent topic/post for sure i think....(some system files are corrupted, how to repair them and stuff like that) ...but fist this problem...

I use Windows Vista, and on my USB stick, I had a folder with photos. As I was deleting them since I no longer need them, there were two files added into that folder that were surely not created by me (I'm guessing the system made it).

They had a file type I have never seen before in my life. JG file type (no it's not any form of jpeg file types).

I can't seem to delete this file for some reason. Could anyone help me?

Photo attached of what message I receive when I try to delete them:

PS:
I was also wondering what this file type is and what it's used for, just to cure my curiosity.

See if your admin first go to properties, security, advance and put your pc name in the text field and then try. If that doesn't work then this should.
Go to safe mode and then the path and delete it

I have accidentally associated a number of file types with Notepad. I'm trying to delete their association so they go back to having no program that they open with, but Windows does not seem to have this ability integrated into Default Programs > Set Associations. I tried deleting the registry values for the file type in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts, but that didn't work. Any other ideas?

You should be able to unassociated the file extensions using an option in the tutorial below.

When I type in the address bar in Firefox or IE whatever I type disappears after a few keystrokes. Same thing happens in the google search box on IE but not Firefox. After a while IE appears to become unresponsive (but seems to still be running ok). Sometimes I can not click on the windows menu (flashes up but then disappears immediately). Typing in an open office doc is ok but sometimes the control buttons don't work (eg bold/underline ect)

If I hold down the backspace key the problem seems to go away.

I have tried using Sharpkeys to disable the backspace key but this did not resolve the problem. The ?presskey? function appears to detect at least one more function of the backspace key that it doesnt recognise. Also tried doing a system restore.

Very frustrated with this problem ? all help appreciated.

Hello all,

Totally baffled, twice now I've set up parental controls for my daughter but she ends up using an admin account which won't delete or downgrade to 'Standard'.

I was changing the account via Start Menu - Admin Tools - User Accounts (Home premium has no proper local groups and policy control) I go through the steps but account remains as admin account and won't delete either.

Have also tried deleting in Safe Mode (command prompt)

NET USER <username> /DELETE

I get the error 'net user system error user is not a member of group'

Now I have actually disabled the account so it's not available for login

net user <username> /active:no

But really have no clue why vista is acting this way and how my daughter is able to 'switch' to this account without even changing/knowing the password (it's the 2nd time it's happened and I actually changed the password the last time.)

Any ideas please or known bugs?

We are running SP2.

Thanks.

I have several Type 1 fonts that I installed manually and now want to uninstall. When attempting to delete through the Control Panel route to Fonts, the error message is that the fonts are in use and cannot be deleted. No programs are open. When attempting to delete or change permissions through the CMD window, the error message is access denied. When attempting to change the read/write permissions on the Fonts folder, and clicking ignore on the many system fonts that Windows installs by default, I still cannot get access to these three fonts. Interestingly, this r/w permissions approached worked several days ago for several other Type 1 fonts that I installed manually.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I am trying to delete songs from my itunes that I do not like anymore to make some space on my laptop. I know that sometimes when I delete songs it pops up saying "delete from hard drive?". I want that to pop up always, but for some reason it doesnt sometimes. My friend said that it will only do that if you have itunes organizing the folders. So i deleted my preferences and made it so itunes will organize my music. However I still delete songs and they dont delete off my hard drive. I was told that the songs have to be in the itunes music folder, I had alot of songs in there, but some in a different folder. I thought maybe I could move the other folder into the itunes music folder, and then it would work. However now when I go to play some songs it says the file cannot be found. Anything I can do? HELP ME!

A:How do I delete songs from hard drive when I delete them from my Itunes library?

Because you moved the songs from where iTunes was used to looking for them they will not play - when each song comes up and the error message you described comes up you can click yes to find them and browse for them (you should know where they are if you put them all in one folder). This will re-establish the link to the song's new location in iTunes.
If you have lots to do, it may be faster to delete all your songs from iTunes (not your computer) and set up the folder on your computer properly - one My Music folder with all your music in there - they can be further sorted into subfolders if you want to. Then open iTunes, set the Preferences to "Keep iTunes folder organised" and "copy files to iTunes folder when adding to library" and import all your music from your My Music folder again.
When you get new music by whatever means and import them to iTunes it will automatically place a copy in the iTunes "iTunes music" folder for you and always know where to look for them.

Hello all,
This is the second computer I have experienced this issue on... I am not sure what setting I may have unknowinlgy enabled to create this fiasco.. hopefully you all have an opinion.

All of the sudden, my backspace key will not delete text that I have highlighted in Word 2002. My delete key will, but my backspace key won't.... this is a pain in the rear since it takes a lot more effort to use to use the delete key than the backspace key, and using backspace has been ingrained in me since childhood.

I did not change any settings or turn on any features (unless it was unknowingly)... I was not messing with options or settings recently at all, as well. I am completely stumped as to how this happens... as mentioned before, it is the second computer to do this to me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a ton!

Gentlemen [and Ladies ?]

I have three questions.

My Operating System is Windows XP Professional SP2.

1. I read the reply to PURE TRAGEDY's post of the 7th April 2005 and immediately uninstalled my AVG7 anti-virus scanner. Norton System Works antivirus and AVG7 antivirus had been running side by side for six or seven months and nothing untoward had happened, but when I read the dire warning in the advice to PURE TRAGEDY, AVG7 got the chop.

I would like to scan with Norton in SAFE MODE but do not know how to do it. When I had Windows 98SE, my computer used to jump into SAFE MODE without me doing anything positive to cause it to do that. I had no idea how to get out of SAFE MODE so a neighbour helped. I cannot remember what he did. My computer was in SAFE MODE for two days on one occasion because I did not dare mess about with it.

So, an explanation, in 'dummy' language, exactly how I can get into SAFE MODE, and scan my computer for viruses with Norton, and how I can get out of it, will be appreciated.

2. I have Norton System Works, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster. Spyware Guard, and 2-Squared in my computer. The programmes are updated and used every day. Norton detected a virus which AVG7 did not, so I feel happy with the Norton security.

I have considered installing Microsoft's Beta Anti-Spy and malware application but my friends throw up their hands in horror when anything with Beta is mentioned. "Don't do i... Read more

A:XP queries - SAFE MODE; BETA, and delete or not delete

I too am a tidy person, to the degree I can be, oldsoldierThe reason you had no untoward results having both Norton & AVG running was probably due to how they were configured to run.If both were set to to scan continously and be auto-updated constantly, then some problems may have surfaced. You may simply delete the Grisoft folder. You need not open any of the files before you do.That folder was essentially for backups to what the AV software did for you.Without it's presence, or in light of your decision not to re-install it, those files in that folder are useless.I should mention I uninstalled Norton in favor of AVG because:1. Norton updates less frequently than AVG, and isn't effective against as many new variants as the Grisoft has been in the last couple of years.2. Norton costs more.3. Norton, when uninstalled, is also messy. It seems to me to require more system resources to do less for me. An opinion based on a couple years of observation, and reading countless HJT logs where it is installed and serious malware problems also co-exist. 4. Norton offers several products. I've had most installed at one time or another.I bought the System Works Suite in 2002. It deeply embeds into winXP when you use all the features of it, and slows the PC down considerably doing so. If you do not use a similar product, then you will not have similar experiences. The anti-virus aspect of it alone did prove IMHO to be marginally adequate.Microsoft Beta 1 is not anti-vir... Hi, I think all my problems started when I installed a new McAfee security program three days ago and now I can't seem to get anything to work. My Yahoo mail acount will not delete any unwanted messages although I check the box and click on delete, nothing happens. I also lost all the names in my browser. Nothing appears when I click on it. I have to type each www. name in each time. I tried to send and E-mail to [email protected][/email], but it would not go. Maybe it would be better to uninstall the McAfee and restore my computer back to before I installed it. Please advise.

A:delete button will not delete unwanted messages

Well...I would agree about dumping the McAfee but since you paid money for it you will simply have to start reading the HELP files on how to use and configure it. Your problems are all because McAfee is not configured or over configured for your needs.

The program can be overwhelming to a novice computer user. If you want good anti-virus protection with a firewall, then see this: www.my-etrust.com/microsoft

Hi there
Be careful with IMAP and Outlook 2010 as the DELETE really does DELETE stuff off the server.

In Outlook 2007 you got a line through the items and had to do EDIT==>PURGE to delete stuff off the server so be careful if you really DON'T want to physically delete mail from the server when using OUTLOOK 2010 - especially if you still need the email and are just testing OUTLOOK 2010 on one machine and need the email on other machine(s).

There might be settings to change this but I've basically used the defaults -- there is quite a bit of change from Outlook 2007 to 2010 (it's actually much nicer - more in keeping with the rest of Office 2010).

Cheers

I am trying to delete a large file that was used by PC Tools AntiVirus. I have uninstalled the PC Tools software, but a file remained. I have tried to delete it, but nothing I've tried has worked. The file is

c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\PC Tools\Temp

For some reason, the file is very, very large, and I don't understand what is going on with it. When I try to delete it, some members actually add space believe it or not (I have watched this happen). One went from a few K to 11 mb when I tried to delete it! Is there a "hard command" to delete this thing? I have "fired all my bullets". I am running AVG antivirus now to determine if a virus is involved. AVG runs for over 2 hours because of the size of this file. I need a "strong" command to get rid of this thing. Help would be greatly appreciated.

'Wise Registry Cleaner' suggests ok to 'fix' by deleting certain registry entries per the following message...

Reason: Type Library does not exist:{188a4c39-df85-4881-8c94-29b69c307ecf}
Safe to fix.

I know you officially dont recommend 'registry cleaners', but if we do use them, is there a good place to find out what some of these messages mean in terms of ok to delete such entries (besides asking the WRC people) ?

A:Registry Cleaner ok to delete if "Type Library does not exist:" ???

Hello and Welcome to TSF

After Wise Registry Cleaner analyzes your system for problems, you can individually view each of the problems found and call up a detailed description. If you wish, you can also have all problems corrected automatically.
All changes to your system are monitored by Wise Registry Cleaner and can be undone with a few mouse clicks.

A:Done with a variable .. how can I delete it from memory ? -- delete in C++ ?

It's really not advisable to try to manage memory for scalar variables. It's generally done more for data structures such as arrays and linked lists.

Keep in mind that any variable declared within a function exists only for the duration of that function's execution, unless it is declared as "static." So memory management for a variable declared within a function (unless it's the main function) is something you don't worry about.

However, if your heart is set on managing memory yourself, "new" and "delete" will do it for you. These are C++'s extensions of C's malloc() and free().

So,

new int i ;
...
delete i ;

Don't try to delete a variable you haven't allocated with "new."

I cannot get a delete query to delete; it keeps saying "Cannot delete specified records", and the 'Help' button doesn't bring up any help. It should be simple. Have two tables with the same fields, except that tbl2 has one additional field called [Delete] that contains an "X" for the records I want to delete from tbl1. Each table has an ID number, but in tbl1, it's a primary field while in tbl2, it's only a number.

I first created a query that selected only those records in tbl2 where there is (a) an "X" in the Delete field and (b) the Contribution field is null. I used that query in the delete query where I inner join it to tbl1 using the ID number. I put the "*" from tbl1 in the first column of the query, and it correctly puts "From" in the Delete row. If I do a View of the result, it displays 234 records, which is the correct number of records to be deleted. But when I try to run the query, all I get is the error message.

What's wrong with the query?

By whatever demon, the folder structure now says something like:"\..\uploaded\errors\uploaded\errors\uploaded\errors\uploaded\errors\uploaded\errors\.............\"792 folders deep.I have no idea how this occurred since there's little to no activity in these folders at any given time. For the moment I don't care why but nevertheless, I can't delete the folders at all (because they far exceed the 255 character Windows limit). In factthe folder structure goes so deep, that I can't even tell whether the structure ends at a file OR a folder since I can't "see" down that far. More criteria (note this is in NTFS and I have ownership and full rights of the entire structure):-I do NOT get a "file is locked by another program" error-I can't delete it from a command prompt-I can't delete it in 8.3 mode-I can't delete it in Safe Mode-I can't delete it in Safe Mode with a command prompt-I did run a virus scan in safe Mode on the folders but it comes up clean (assuming the scan saw that far down but it seemed to terminate properly)-if I... Hi, for some reason I can no longer use the Delete key to move files to the recycle bin, delete text, et cetera. I can still use Shift+Delete to permanently remove files et cetera, but using the Delete key by itself does not do anything whatsoever. This also doesn't appear to be a hardware issue, as using two different keyboards as well as the on-screen keyboard yields the same result. Using a program that checks for keyboard inputs, it also clearly shows the Delete key being pressed, but nothing happens.

Anyone know what is going on? I tried closing down any programs that could possibly interfere, for example programs that might use the Delete key for some shortcut or macro et cetera.

A:Delete key non-responsive, doesn't delete

Right click on the Recycle shortcut on your desktop and select Properties from the context menu.

Once the properties window appears, select the option named:
Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted.

"OK" your way our of that properties window.

Use Windows (file) Explorer to delete the folder* named $Recycle.Bin

*If need be, set Windows (file) Explorer to show protected operating system files.

Open the Recycle bin's properties window again and select:
Custom size

"OK" your way our of that properties window.

You should now have a new folder** named $RECYCLE.BIN

You might need to refresh Windows (file) Explorer.

Hopefully, this rebuilt recycle bin will work for you. If not, then we have some more hunting to do.

Can someone please supply an answer to enable deletion.

Than you.

I have been working on a document for elementary math. I have developed ways to insert math problems, equations and pictures. I may have inadvertently changed something in the program to cause this problem. I know just enough about computers to royally screw things up.

If I highlight a sentence with the intention of deleting it and begin typing. Instead of deleting the highlighted sentence, my new sentence appears and just pushes the original to the right but doesn't remove it. Then, if I hit the keyboard delete, nothing happens at all.

I tried to be all smart and go into the Edit Menu and Tool Bars and check stuff. I don't even know what I might have checked or unchecked. I also did the fix and repair thing but it didn't fix this problem.
I called the tech support where I bought the computer and they told me to call Microsoft. So, I called Microsoft who told me to call the tech support where I bought the computer.

Now, I'm appealing to Bleeping Computer who has always solved my problems in the past.

I am currently using WINDOWS VISTA BASIC and I want to free up space on my Hard-Drive. My Hard-Drive currently has been partitioned 3 times by default: Local Disc (C 28.6GB FREE OF 65.8GB
HP_RECOVERY (F 2.93GB FREE OF 3.86GB
OS Tools (E 1.31GB FREE OF 1.55GB

(I will also continue to remove the rarely used applications to free more memory on (C )

Also I have 3.23GB unallocated because I shrunk the HP_RECOVERY and I know that you can only extend the unallocated memory to (C if the unallocated memory in continuous after the (C but the HP_RECOVERY is currently in the middle. e.g |-------(C------|--HP_RECOVERY--|-UNALLOCATED-|---OS TOOLS---|

I would like most of my memory to go to the (C.

Then I will add another partition to use another OS once I am happy with the memory I have freed up..

I would like to know if removing the HP_RECOVERY partition will seriously effect my VISTA BASIC OS. I am focusing on removing the HP_RECOVERY because I am currently stuck without the 3.23GB which is unallocated because of it being non continuous with the (C

I know how to remove it but I need to know if my laptop will operate correctly once it has been removed.

Also, what would happen if I get a serious system error, will i still be able to recover my files?

Will SYSTEM RESTORE still operate?

Would it be better to create a back-up with Norton Ghost BEFORE and AFTER?

Hi all
I have another hdd that I call, (E:Storage Drive and I use this for storing my photo albums. While sorting things into order I noticed that the storage drive had gained lots of extra folders, some I have managed to delete, others just will not delete, and when I do try to delete the folders the warnings like " this is a systems file, do you want to delete it " always make me cancel.
The extra folders are > RECYCLER > Program Files > ntldr > System Volume Information > desktop.ini > hiberfil.sys > pagefile.sys > and Windows.
I don't know how they got there, and I don’t really want extra files taking up space on the storage drive if I can avoid it, the recycler, program files, system volume, and windows files are all on my C: drive and I presume that they are duplicates from the C: drive, and it's ok to delete them, or is it?? Can anyone explain, regards Robert.

Yes, you can fix that line. It does not appear to be a bad entry.

With all windows closed, rescan with HijackThis, place a check in that line and click Fix

It does appear to be a file from hp.com, should you ever need the file again while visiting hp.com, you will be given the option to download it to your computer again.

I started out with the two previous posts about macros (post 1, post 2) that move rows into columns, but I'm having a little trouble getting it to work for what I need. First, I'm trying to do a data merge into Word, but in order to get the data merge to work/look the way I want it to, I need the XLS data to be in columns.

I'm attaching an example file that has one worksheet of the sample data (though my "real" data has about 300 rows) and the other worksheet is an example of the outcome I need.

Is there anyway I can do what I need? Exporting into another file or another worksheet within this file would be fine.

Thanks in advance.

I?ve got a file that seems to exist, but I can?t delete. I created it as a.txt with a long-ish file name (76 chars) as a reminder, but it now has no extension & is zero bytes. When I try & delete it I get the msg: ?Cannot delete ?. Cannot find the specified file?. I can?t open it and the properties doesn?t give me much info.

It?s on a drive (h:) that?s sync?d to a network and only appears when I?m not connected to the network. This makes it difficult to use things like ccleaner, deletefxpfiles, chkdsk etc.

I?ve tried deleting it from a command line (tells me it doesn't exist) in safe cmd mode (couldn't log on) deleting the folder and a bunch of other things ? but no joy.

Any ideas?

I want to use Find and Replace to delete all the links in a document. All the links are as text (e.g. http://...). I don't mean that the word Yahoo is a link to http://www.yahoo.com.

I want to use wild cards to select the Whole link.
I thought find http://* would select it all, but it only selects the http:// part of the whole link.
I have checked the Use Wildcards checkbox.

How do I select the whole link so that I can replace it with a blank space?

I'm using Word 2003.

A:Delete all links, delete all that begin w/ http: | "Find and Replace" Help

Try using something like this in your search field for Replace:
http:?*?*****************************
Edit:Oh, you are in Word - what I suggested works in Excel.
In Word, you will have to do something like this:
(http:????????????????) - but that will only find names that are 21 characters long that start with "http:". If you have one that is 20 characters long, you will need to remove one question mark, then another, then another....
e.g., to find http://www.google.com you need "http:" followed by 16 "?" but to find http://www.yahoo.com you need "http:" followed by 15 "?".
It might be easier to export your data to Excel (if it is in a table, at least) and do the work there.

Good Day Everyone a few hours ago, I just finished installing Windows Professional x32 and had a problem with deleting the windows.old because of the permission bug.

Well I managed to delete the Windows.old by editing my security and user however when I log-offed, I saw another user account that I think I've mistakenly made while editing the security in the properties of a folder in windows.old.

My problem is, the delete function GONE!

The mistakenly made user is Administrator.
When I logged in Administrator, a pop-up appeared saying that it is a temporary user account.

I really want to delete it, It's a nuisance every time I log-in and takes some space.

Can anyone help me regarding this? I will appreciate it greatly.

I have scanned several documents to edit and as I am a dummy, they and the messes I made of them are all in the 'My Documents' folder. When I try to delete them, I just get more copies of them. I have a folder full of hundreds of copies of files now and I don't know what to do. I can't figure it out. As my other computer is being worked on I am on this old one and it has, I think Word 97 on it. I have documents still showing when I open Word and this folder jam packed with copies. What do I do?
Help me, please! Thank you in advance.

A:Can't delete Word documents and they keep copying back to My Documents when I delete.

There are utilities that enable this, but unless it has been specifically installed it is not part of Windows.
How many buttons does the mouse have and which button are you using.
When you open My Documents - does it look like the screenshot.

If so, highlight the item with just one left click and then click on delete selected item in left pane. It is not showing on my screenshot but when you do select the item with one left click, then left pane will then include the choice Copy, Move and delete the selected item in separate lines., as well as other choices.

If you do not have this view of My Documents click the Tools tab, click folder options and on the general window click show common taks in folders and then click apply and OK.
The same procedure with delete can be obtained by clicking the File tab, top left and then clicking delete on there.

If you have a three button mouse post back and I will give you further guidance as to what may be the problem.

Make sure you are using left click on the procedure I have described, as right click on the item and then choosing delete may activate the auto move.

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

A:To delete or not to delete, that is the question?

That depends on the upgrade software package.

1. Is the software upgrade a full version or just the upgrade version, if upgrade, you can't delete the initial install. The upgrade installers don't install the whole program, just the upgraded components.

2. Some upgrade installers check first to make sure the initial program is installed, if not, they won't let you proceed.

It depends on the software

Fist off, your HJT log shows you're not running a firewall. If you're not computing behind a network firewal-embedded Router then you need to asctivate ICF immediately if not sooner:

To turn on the WinXP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF):

- On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Control Panel.

- Click the Network and Internet Connections category. (If the Network and Internet Connections is not visible, click Switch to Category View under Control Panel on the left side of the Control Panel window.)

- Click Network Connections.

- Right-click the Dial-up, LAN, or High-Speed Internet connection that you use to connect to the Internet, and then click Properties from the shortcut menu.

- On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select Protect my computer and network, and then click OK. The Windows XP firewall is now enabled.

i've been relying on going to "internet options","general" and "delete" then ticking all the boxes on that page..i found out that by doing this,my temporary internet file swere NOT being deleted.is this a vista problem? my pc came to a complete sludge of a slow down today and i found that my internet files folder had files going back a year that hadn't been deleted as i've been relying on ticking those boxes..i had tons and tons of and tons of files.i'm wondering if this is the norm and also is it possible that other files are not being deleted when using that method? if so,then i probably have folders that are totally loaded with trash.

I've spent the last hour or so looking over several pages of these activation threads and haven't found one that addresses the problem I've recently had with my Win8 x64 activation. My copy of "8.0" Win8x64 has been activated since I bought it direct from Microsoft in January for $39.99 and burned the iso to DVD and installed it (This post does not concern "8.1" as I installed that on another partition entirely just to play with until it is ready for prime time.) I also got the free copy of Windows Media Center with its separate key. For the past six months I've had no problems at all relative to activation. I've actually never had any problems with activation (that I couldn't fix pretty quickly) ever since Microsoft initially started doing its activation bit with its OSes several years ago.

Yesterday, (I've listed my system specs) I'd been experimenting with using my UEFI bios to push the clock rates for my cpu with an attendant .15V rise in power to the cpu core--standard clock is 3.5GHz with Turbo to 4.1GHz--and I incrementally moved the cpu clock to 4.515GHz and turned off Turbo mode (of course), and found that my idle temps while running AMD's Cool 'n Quiet mode (through a UEFI setting) averaged 38C-45C; and ~55C under load (@4.515GHz), which is not much different at all from the standard stock-clocked temps. OK, that's as it should be for a well-binned, good-yielding chip, etc. It overclocks well with very little resistance... Read more

A:Mistaken OS requests for activation

Hi waltc,

Wow, you really know how to write a book with no stone left unturned! Anyway, since you have had 0 responses from the forum, I decided to just throw in my two cents. First off, my reactivations have been much more simple than yours; however, I can tell you that I have been successful every time. Some of these reactivations have included major components and the phone reactivation has always worked for me but the key to success in this area is, when they start to ask you questions, always respond with "one" as the answer. Now, since nobody knows for sure what information MS collects to identify an installation configuration, you can probably expect more of the same down the road but since Win 8 Pro is actually a retail license you should be able to get through a reactivation time and time again (if necessary). Remember, the answer is always "ONE." Cheers.

Hi guys,

an idiotic accounting good friend of mine ran a system recovery on her computer last night
she has no backups and is really worried about getting data back

i dont know what the laptop is,she is dropping it to me tomorrow and what os it is...but im assuming its win 8...anyway

she is running thesaurus which is a payroll system and quickbooks
i have got recovery software but its more suited to finding .doc .pdf .xls more standard files etc
it would be nice to recover the entire partition to how it was before the recovery took place

can this be done using system restore? (though i really wouldnt have thought so as it is a clean install from scratch)

can anybody give me some pointers or recommend a good recovery software to recover her partition (she has basically told me to recover no matter what,if we have to buy software we will

any help or tips appreciated

A:Recovering from a mistaken recovery...

You can't, the data has been partially overwritten and you will never recover the entire previous state.

That's assuming she ran some sort of recovery and not System Restore which can be recovered from but it definitely sounds like she ran a system recovery. System Restore gets wiped out with everything else in a system recovery or reset.

Try to recover her data with whatever tools you have, then sell her a backup and configure it. If it's an option, disable or uninstall the system recovery.

It blows my mine that an accountant wouldn't make backups, most accounting programs even give notices about backing up.

I used Box but then switched to another cloud service.

I uninstalled the Box desktop app but in my Event Viewer I'm getting this:

The server service was unable to recreate the share Documents because the directory E:\backups\My Box Files\Documents no longer exists. Please run "net share Documents /delete" to delete the share, or recreate the directory E:\backups\My Box Files\Documents.

I tried searching Google for Please run "net share Documents /delete" to delete the share but there isn't much.

Could someone tell me how I can do that? Is it simply clicking Start and typing that text in the search field?

A:How to run "net share Documents /delete" to delete the share

No, you should type cmd and press Enter. That will open a command prompt window. In there is where you should type this.

You can then type net share /? if you want more information about that specific command and its parameters.

Hello. I recently reformatted my hard drive. I've installed all of the updates and now have everything set up just the way I want it. However, the Safely Remove Hardware icon continues to pop up on startup. The option it gives me is a disk device at Bus #1. When I look at the device components, it says that Generic volume C: is a part of it. So I'm guessing it wants me to remove my hard drive.

Is there any way I can get rid of the Safely Remove Hardware icon on my toolbar? It's not a huge deal, just kind of an annoyance. I'm also worried if this could be a potential problem in the future? Thanks.

This is an intermittent problem:

Win98SE
IBM Thinkpad 600E laptop
Dlink DWL-G650 wireless adapter (installed properly and functioning most of the time)

Sometimes on reboot however I get the "Install New Hardware Wizard which claims the card is a new "PCI Serial Controller".

If I cancel out of this and unplug the card, and re-insert it it sometimes is correctly recognized as the D-link wireless card, and sometimes not -- if not, I have to go through the PCI Serial Controller Installation (cancel) routine and unplug card again.

I can dual boot this computer into Linux, and the card is ALWAYS properly recognized.

I have gone to the Dlink site and looked at their driver page for this rev. of the card (B5), to see if I can load a new driver.

At the top of the page is the ad blurb about how great the card is and how it will work with W98SE. Below that are the Driver types -- no Win98SE drivers. Not even an empty category for them. I still have the CD with drivers, but none from the site. They have Win2K and XP etc.

This is getting irritating.

Dear Seven Forums,

I just mistaken install windows 7 Pro 64 Bit OEM CD in customer PC and already activate it.
I want to change it with Windows 7 Pro 32 Bit OEM CD(I have the cd and license) and Activate it .

The question are :
1. Can I just reinstall the Windows 7 Pro 32 Bit OEM CD and Activate it ?
2. How about the License of Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit OEM ? can I re use or Sell it to another customer ?
3. The procedure for my problem ?

Sincerely,

Johan

A:Mistaken Install Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit OEM‏ and already Activated

Hello Johan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Q1) The product key (license) can be used to activate either (not both) the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7 Pro, but only on that exact same PC the key was originally activated on.

Q2) No. Once an OEM key has been activated on a PC. It is permanently tied to that specific PC and it's motherboard. It will not activate on any other PC. There's no need to worry about the product key since you can still use it as you wanted with Q1.

Q3) You could just do a normal clean install of the 64-bit Windows 7 Pro on the same PC that you activated with 32-bit, and activate it with the same product key.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

A:Windows 7 not booting after mistaken converting partitions to dynamic

Did you create a System Repair disc? If so can you boot to it? If not I'd download a Linux LiveCD or LiveDVD .iso file to a computer and use a CD/DVD burning program to create the disc then boot to it to save your data files, anything you created or that exists nowhere else. Plug in a USB Thumb/Flash drive or USB HDD/Hard Disk Drive before booting Linux and copy to it.

I've been running the disk defrag here and there and it found some files that were 1gig each. So I figured I should get rid of those, but i wanted to make sure what was okay to delete.

C:\Documents and Settings\*username here*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Is Anything in that folder okay to delete? There is a subfolder of Content.IE5

Also C:\Documents and Settings\*username here*\Local Settings\Temp

and two more..

C:\Downloads
and
C:\Temp

I just wanted to make sure what was okay to delete. Please be as specific as possible, meaning if I can just highlight everything in those folders and delete them, or only delete specific things.

Running a Dell Dimension 4550 with Windows XP if that helps.

Thanks!

A:What Can I Delete?

A good rule of thumb is to save anything of value that you have in those temp folders first. Then you may have to boot into safe mode to get them cleaned out.You could just download and install a program called CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) by clicking HERE.The download link is in on the upper right hand corner of the page, "Download Latest Version". Save to your desktop. After download is complete, go to your desktop and double click ccsetup to start the installation. During the set up you will be presented a page called Install Options. UNcheck everything except Add Desktop Shortcut. Installation of CCleaner will now finish and you should now have a CCleaner icon on your desktop. Double click the icon to run the program. It will clean out your temp folders for you, but, again, you may need to run it while in safe mode.

So I use Limewire to download songs and pictures, etc. And then one time I looked in the folder that contains those downloads and found that there was this picture with pornographic name. The actual picture was nonexistent (it was a blank screen when I pulled up the preview). However, I can't figure out how to delete this thing, delete is not an option when I right click, it won't let me move it to the recycle bin, or even just another folder. Any way to fix this?

A:How Do I Delete This?

Boot up in SAFE mode from a cold start,,,,not a restart.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file in question and see if you can delete it from there.
Highlight it with your mouse and hit the Del key on the right side of your keyboard.

Limewire is a well known problem child, as it comes with Spyware attached.
I'd not have it on my PC at all.
I understand from my own Software Guru that the Spyware can be removed, if you know how.

Good Luck to you and Happy Computing.

NO. All those files and folders are all part of Windows, integrated. If you fool with the XP system without knowing what you are doing you could lose the whole thing. You could create a backup of the files and folders and compress it to reduce the size and transfer it to the laptop. Is your aim to reload Windows?

I have installed xp home twice and i want to Delete one of them.
When I start up I get to the screen where it asks you to select your operating sysyem and if i select the first one I get an error message and it does not load.
If I select the second one on the list with the down arrow it loads up with no problems.I know I have to edit the boot.ini file but I am worried that I may select the wrong one, I have attached a copy below. Would the boot file be in the sama order as the start up screen? If so I can delete the first entry.
Please advise if it does not work how I can recover it.
I have backed up the file to my hardrive shoul it be on a floppy or Cd?

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home

A:Which xp do I delete

The last one you installed always shows up first in order and becomes the default.
Here is a little trick for you just to make sure in yourself which to remove.
Edit the decription of the two versions of XP call one first and the other second, so your boot menu will come up like,

1 Windows XP home second
2 Windows XP home first

choose number 2 and see what happens, if it fails to boot, reset and choose the first in the list, now by description you will know which one to delete.

BTW all you really need do is make the one that works the default and then change the show boot menu time to 0 then you wont see the boot menu it just boots straight in.

I am using Windows XP

My delete key randomly reverts to a backspace function deleting from right to left instead of from left to right.
Also when attempting to insert the curser within text such in a box frame in 'Save Favorites' often the whole line is highlighted instead of setting the point from which you want to edit from.
Also when scrolling along such text the numerals 66 or 44 are regularly being randomly inserted withing the existing text.

I fear I have somehow activated a command change that is causing these effects and have been unable to find any assistance in Windows Help and Support.

I have however found that aplying the Shift & Delete keys in unison appears to have some effect but unfortunately this is not permanent.

Is there a remedy for my problems.

I made a list of some executables that i think are a bad, is it safe to delete the following?

-svhhost.exe
-alchem.exe (name: www.clickalchemy.com)
-vxpvwp.exe
-befgjgj.exe
-edit: twaintech.dll (name: www.twain-tech.com)

I'm mostly worried about deleting svhhost.exe, i've never seen it before, i'm not sure if its bad or not. the others seem to obviously be malicious, but i just want to double check.

A:can i delete these?

Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download and save the file to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

The log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

Hi folks.

Just thought I'd drop in and let all you tech types know about my latest and last DOS based toy.

It's called DOS Delete.

It could prove quite useful for those folks that are still using Windows 95/98/ME.
It's main purpose is to delete active trojans, spyware or other hard to remove programs.
It will in fact delete anything except system files.

http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html

http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/DOS-DEL.zip

As always, it's made available as freeware.

Enjoy.

rmbox

Ps.

Thank you Rog for checking it out.

A:DOS Delete

Thank you Ron for providing it.

Just a note to others on why I find this tool particularly valuable. While it is not hard to restart to DOS and delete a file, it is a chore to determine and advise people on the proper path to the file and convert, where necessary, folder and file names greater than 8 characters to their DOS shortname equivalents.

Ron's tool simply automates this from a right click menu. If the file is active and windows cannot delete it, you are prompted to restart and the process is accomplished before windows loads in the same manner as if you were doing an uninstall or update of configuration files.

Ad-ware 6 or HijackThis cannot fix this:

Started registry scan
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Aureate Object recognized!
Type : RegKey
Data :
Rootkey : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Object : Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{EBBFE27C-BDF0-11D2-BBE5-00609419F467}

I tried to delete this entry with regedit, but there were "deleting errors". (see jpg file).

How can I delete this entry?
