Unable to download updates automatically/manually, download hangs

Q: Unable to download updates automatically/manually, download hangs

I'm trying to download updates through Windows Update, it shows that I have 139 important updates, and 40 optional ones. I selected them and clicked the install button but it got stuck at "Downloading updates (0 kb total, 0% complete)". I cancelled and retried choosing only 24 important updates and the same happened. I tried the check for updates option but it also keeps checking forever.
I also tried downloading updates from Microsoft Download Center but when I try to install them it hangs on "searching for updates on this computer".
I already ran the Microsoft Fix It tool, disabled my anti-virus and firewall, but nothing works.
I cannot install the SURT because it also keeps searching for updates.

I need to update so I can upgrade to Windows 10 - the setup also got stuck while checking for updates, so I was hoping that updating beforehand would do the trick.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem are appreciated.

Hi guys,

I've just put my Dell Studio back to factory settings after having it for two years and deciding to give it a rebirth. I maintain my laptop very well but always like to do a reset every so often.

The problem I'm having now is that the damn thing wont update from Windows Update. It will identify that there are 76 important or critical downloads, but hangs at 0% downloading.

I went to the MS catalogue and tried to download manually, but even though I had the updates selected in my basket, again, it just hung on 0%.

I've ran Kasperskys TDS, the Malicious Tool Removal MS thingy-ma-jig, ran an sfc check where it did note there were corrupt files but it couldn't fix them. The Fix It link to the MS Update Not Working thing found no problems either.

So, I'm scratching my head and going to do a restart and see what's going on.

Any help greatly appreciated as this is doing my nut in.

Cheers!

-Update

Interestingly, I've just reset and it's telling me the system had to be restarted to finish installing updates, but when you click on it for more info, there's no updates listed. Bloody liar.

A:Will not download Updates automatically or manually via MS Catalogue

Welcom to the forum
If you'r facing a problem in WU then use the tool provided by MS to resolve this problem:

Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

If after that the problem persist and you say that you reset every so often, then consider to dowload your same version of your OS from:

I'm using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1.

I want to manually check for updates, make Windows download them if there is any, but wouldn't install at that moment, instead make Windows install them next time I shut it down.

In Windows XP, it was easy. You just selected the option to download. And when you attempt to shut down Windows, it asked if you want to shut down normally, or you want to install updates while shutting down.

However, in Windows 7, I couldn't find a way to do this same behavior. Can you please tell me how to, if there is any way to do it?

A:How to: Manually, download updates but not install

Use this address to find the updates you want
in the right hand corner theres a search box, type in your windows version
then find the specific files you want\need
then save them wherever you want

Handy for reinstalls without having to download everything again
Stop Windows Update in services first
then run your updates
then START WU again and check for updates

Hi I'm a university student having a bit of trouble, for a project I have to install Windows 8.1 64 bit on several machines including updates.

As you can imagine updating each machine individually can be extremely time consuming. I was wondering if there's a way to manually download all the latest windows update files and put them in the Windows 8.1 ISO, so that once Windows is installed on the machine it will be up to date.

sorry if I haven't explained myself correctly

So I find myself occasionally checking optional updates, seeing what they did, and downloading them each and every time. Now, I know that there is no way to automate this process in Windows itself, but is there some registry hack or download to enables you to?
Thanks!

A:Automatically Download Optional Updates?

You can open the Windows Update in the Control and under Important updates you can use the option to Download updates but let me choose whether to install them or not.

This will give you the opportunity to check out the updates and decide which ones you wish to install.  When you view the updates there will be a check box in front of each update, you can place a check for each update you wish to install.

I am a computer tech. I use a lot of the programs that are available on this website. I am looking for a program that will go out and download a copy of the latest versions of said programs and copy them to my flash drive. For instance I use adwcleaner and I have to go out and download the program about everytime I need to use it because the version I have is out of date. So if I had a program that would automatically download adw without me having to visit bleeping computer and download it that would be great. I can click on a button that basically updates all of my tools that I use.

As opposed to other tools, Ketarin is not meant to keep your system up-to-date, but rather to maintain a compilation of all important setup packages which can then be burned to disc or put on a USB stick.

On a fresh install it takes my laptop 12-15 hours (honestly, no kidding) for Microsoft to say hey you got no updates, here is the list what ones do you want to install. Then many hours more to download them and install them.

Is there a way to download all the Windows 7 64bit updates manually (by a program), not one by one searching for them on google and have them all installed automatically by a program?

I have seen some older programs that did this but they don't seem to be current and I still have a about 100 updates after they installed the updates.

I would like to find a way to batch download and install all the updates to a fresh install of Windows 7.

Thanks

Hi everyone, I have a nasty virus on my computer and whatever I do I can't get rid of it as my security bar has disappeared and I cannot download anything from Micsrosoft updates/Rkill/or any other anti virus type of program. At the very top of my IE screen there is a blue bar with the Microsoft E in the left hand side. I have no access to any other buttons that used to be there. Neither can I open Internet Properties from anywhere, including control panel. I have done a Norton scan , but all it found were W32.Ramnit!html types, but it couldn't delete or quarantine them. I have run MBAM and Spybot, but they found nothing.

Is there an anti virus program I could use if I got a friend to download it onto a CD?

Hello and welcome. The reason for this and the touble in the other topics you have here is the Ramnit infection. I'm afraid I have very bad news. You must wipe the drive and reinstall.RAMNIT = VIRUTTrojan SHeur3.AQRA (AVG)TR/Spy.Gen (Avira) Win32.Rmnet (Dr.Web) Trojan-Spy (Ikarus) Mal/SillyFDC-A (Sophos) W32.Ramnit!html (Symantec) Your system is infected with a Win32/Ramnit.A!dll, a file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .dll and .HTML files and opens a back door that compromises your computer.Ramnit.A!dll is a component injected into the default web browser by Worm:Win32/Ramnit.A which is dropped by a Win32/Ramnit.A infected executable file. Ramnit.A also infects .exe, and .HTML/HTM files, downloads more malicious files to your system, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. The infected .HTML or .HTM files may be detected as Virus:VBS/Ramnit.AIn many cases the infected files cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus. I am having several problems with Vista, on an Acer Aspire 5100. First, when I turn it on, I receive a message "ATI External Event Utility EXE Module has stopped working" I have reinstalled all of my ATI drivers, still nothing, and cant I find any working solutions anywhere online.

The other problem is that I cant download any updates through Windows Update, with an error code "80246008". This points to a problem with the BITS service. This service refuses to start, with an error message "1068". All of its dependencies are working though, except COM+ Event System, which, when I force it to start, it stops again, saying it isn't needed. I have checked several Knowledge Base articles on this, and according to them, BITS should be working, I cant find a reason for it not to. All of these services I have set to automatically start, and restarted my computer, but they still don't start, or stay running.

I am posting these two problems in the same thread because they started at the same time, for apparently no reason. I think they are connected, but don't know how.

From comments on other forums this problem affects a number of users and the workaround that seems to work is to change the get DNS server definition from automatic to manual, but the question is why?
I first took my notebook with W7 starter on holiday where it worked perfectly downloading updates without changing anything. This suggested the problem is not on my PC, but external.
Back home I had to change the DNS settings to manual using 4.2.2.2 for DNS server, after which the downloads worked fine (I have another PC at home that runs XP without any such problems). This hints at a problem with the DNS server or the update server that the DNS points to, but another user found the DNS server used when in automatic mode, changed to manual, defined the same DNS server and that worked. This suggests the problem isn't external either.
Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Ok, so here we go. I recently had an issue where my sound went out on the computer and i recieve a message saying "no audio output device installed" or something like that. After trying to fix it for weeks, i have come to the conclusion that the sound chip or whatever is destroyed.

~REASON FOR POST~ (windows vista home premium, 32 bit)

After a reset to factory default, i procedded to run the windows update. The first few updates went smoothly (roughly 80 over a 3 day period). Recently i recieved a notice that 4 updates were ready to be installed (security update for microsoft office 2007 KB951550, security update for microsoft office 2007 KB951994, the 2007 microsoft office suite service pack 2, and update for the 2007 microsoft office system KB967642). Everytime i try to install these updates they fail, and i am not recieving any new updates from microsoft. Also when i go to log out (please bare with me on this description) the button that looks like a circle with a line through it (log out button im assuming) has the icon signaling to log off and install updates. When i try this the computer logs down, begins installing updates, but it fails because when i log back in the icon is still signaling me to log out and install.

I have tried to use microsoft fix it and i recieve this error: Fix it troubleshooting cannot continue because an error occured, we're sorry, but the diagnostic solution encountered a runtime error. please try again later.

How do I fix error code 0X80200010? I've used auto-update for years with no problem, but have not received the last 10 security updates. I'm running XP home SP3 with Avast! antivirus, Threatfire, and PCTOOLS firewall. I have not reinstalled Windows for a couple of years. My last security update was on 3/11/10, after that I received an update on IE8 on 4/1/10. Now when I go to the update site, the new ones download okay, but do not install successfully. I've followed the instructions to stop auto-update, install wups2.dll and restart auto-update (indication was, this was successful) however this hasn't helped. The other cited examples of the causes of the problem don't seem to apply to my situation. I think I have looked at everything MS has listed as possible causes and solutions. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Somewhere, probably on one of these forums, it was suggested I use Microsoft Fix it to clean my Windows update queue, but its not working. I let it run for over an hour and a half. It never moves past 'Installing PowerShell please wait'. Update sits at 'downloading 0%' and never downloads the updates.

When I do get Windows updates to download in the past, the Sound chip/RealTek Digital output produces no sound.

I've checked the HDMI cable, its fine when I use my monitor as a television. Plug the cable back into the computer; no sound but I get a picture. Also, not currentl;y getting sounds out of my computer. None.

Sometimes deleting all of the sound devices in Device Manager brings the sound output back, occasionaly it doesn't.

Any suggestions on how to fix these two problems ?

No, getting another computer, nor upgrading the OS, aren't options.

For the past 18+ days I've been unable to download and install updates on Windows7 x64. I've tried all the trouble shooters and the update readiness tool, I've sought and received advice from windows answers to no avail, 14 days ago it did allow some updates but now its insists that IE9 on IE is not downloaded when I can see it is and all the time I keep getting Error Codes 80073712 and 9C48 , I've attempted and failed on at least 21 times now and every time it looks like it may make it but then it fails. Please if anyone has any info please let me know as the the response from Windows is pathetic.

Hi Nigel,

Have you installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7? Also, could you please try the following, if you haven't already done so:

Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working

Also, could please post you full system specifications using this tool:

Within the past few days, I noticed that every time I was shutting down my laptop, it was telling me that it was downloading updates and not to shut down.

Also, whenever I would boot up, I would get the message box saying my computer might be at risk, because my anti-virus software was not up to date.

After 3 or more days of this, I began to get suspicious, so I decided to access Microsoft online help manually. That was when I got the error message: Server Error in '/' Application Runtime Error

In short, I am unable to receive updates or even access Microsoft online Help.
I tried to find a simple fix by searching on Google, but the fixes that came up were very confusing, and I didn't feel comfortable, after reading through their steps, that they would actually fix the problem.

So far, I have run Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy without success. I have also reset my computer to an earlier date, but it did not fix the problem.

I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A WINDOWS INSTALL DISK OR BOOT CD.
Attached are the first reports you requested.

My anti-virus software is Microsoft Security Essentials.

My OS is Windows XP Professional, Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600

I was trying to download the updates to Ad-Aware and scan the computer (like I always do) and it gives me this message: "The downloaded definitions file could not be read, please update again." It get's to like 5% of the way done, then stops, and after I click finish it says "Webupdate Complete" when I know it's wrong. What can I do, or is it just a slight error for now and it'll be fixed later.

I assume you've restarted your computer a few times since you posted. Any changes, or are things still stalling?

It looks to me like you've got a firewall blocking outgoing access there (possibly as far as blocking all outgoing connections).

I figured updating all the windows updates would help solve this, but i'm unable to. I keep getting error code 800B0100 when I try to DL them. It was suggested I get the x64 Windows Readiness Tool download. I downloaded that and even that has failed to install. I'm not sure what the issue is. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello!

What error message did you receive when you attempted to install the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). Can you please try it again and note down the error message and code if you can't remember.

After that, let's jump in with the big guns logs!

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, copy the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file into your new CBS folder on your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Thanks a lot!

My friends computer was very slow so I took a look at it. Installing and running malwarebytes + microsoft security essentials and it had hundreds of instances of worms, trojans etc.

After scanning with them once and removing them and rescanning them nothing shows up but I still can't download any updates from windows update. It gets stuck at downloading 0kbs/0% progress but downloading things from the webbrowser works fine.

MSE found Trojan:Win32/Bladi!rts in the file c:\program files\Tencent\Adplus\Adplus.dll

And malwarebytes found: worm.KoobFace, trojan.BHO and some other trojans, rogue virusremover and some other stuff.

First of all, let me say thank you! Honestly, any help at all that you provide will make a huge difference.

Essentially, I think that I very stupidly downloaded a false anti-spyware tool... winguard I think it was called. Now it is as if there is a proxy that is blocking access to anti-virus/anti-spyware upgrades (I even tried to download mbam as I saw in another topic and I wasn't able to).

Anyhow, due to the fact that I am essentially computer illiterate, I don't know what the virus could be. I'm sorry to not give you more information, but I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks again!

I have two computers running Windows XP SP2 [one is Home edition, this one is Media Center Edition]. Anyways, somehow my father has gotten the same virus/malware onto both computers. I can't download any files from anywhere [my uninfected vista PC was able to download everything I tested], and I can't run any online virus scans because they require downloading components. Ironically, both computers have Symantec Antivirus 9 Corporate [I got it free from school]. Both of them won't update. I had to do a manual virus def update and still came up with nothing. I tried spybot too, and it found some stuff but
the problem is still there.

My friend advised me to try ComboFix on this PC, but with no luck. In fact, System Restore is broken too. It says 'System Restore could not restore to your selected date," blah blah blah. Because Combofix would NEVER complete, my system clock also says the time in 24h format instead of 12h format and won't change in the control panel.

Here's my DSS log:

For almost a year I haven't been able to download a single update for Windows 7 (Have around 75 pending important updates to download). Sometime ago, I recall stumbling across a backdoor virus on my PC. It prevented me from accessing any of my programs, including the internet. I had to go into safe mode to remove the virus. A few days later I had pending operating system updates. When I went to update, it was unable to even gain access online (my internet connection was fine). Microsoft Security Essentials also, was compromised and unable to update itself. I was able to correct it, though Windows Update has remained the same.

I have attempted to clean-boot up Windows, in hopes that it had been Malware Bytes that was blocking the updates all along. The Updater was able to find out that I had 75 pending updates, though when it went to actually download them, it was unable to and gave me an error code, 80246008. I have seen another post from a user here that had a similar problem, but I'm not sure him and I have the exact issue. (Windows 7 cannot check for updates & error 0x80070002)

I've had problems with Windows XP, 7 before. But nothing this frustrating or difficult to figure out. Any help you can give me would greatly be appreciated.

Hello All

I did a fresh install of Win7 Pro 64Bit yesterday from an OEM disc to a new Samsung 850 Pro SSD.

2 sets of initial updates, which included SP1, went without a hitch with Windows Updater set to let me know when updates are available so I can choose to download etc.

Today I got an alert that there were 200+ updates available for download, I went through them and deselected KB3133977 which can mess with Asus MB's, then hit continue... an hour later my system was still "Preparing to Download."

I changed the Updater settings to Download but let me choose what to install, rebooted, and a short while later I was told there were 173 updates ready to install.

I checked again to make sure KB3133977 hadn't made it back onto the list and hit continue... 15 minutes later my system was still "Preparing to Install."

At this point I figured something must be broken, so considered rolling back through the Restore Points, trying a Repair install, or just nuking the drive and starting again.

But before trying any of the above I've included the CBS file, a screen grab of the SURT tool after 2hrs, the sfc Scannow results, and the results of running the Windows Updater Troubleshooter.

I hope you guys can help... thanks in advance!
Paul

Hi. Not sure this is the right forum...if not I apologize. I have a new (2-weeks) HP computer with Windows 8.1 installed. I have tried to install two programs via CD, both successfully. However, when the new programs check for updates (both say there is one available), I get a message that the update was not successful, as I am not the administrator.
This is baffling, as I am the only user, and when I check, Windows shows me logged in as Administrator. (There are no other user accounts active at all).
I asked for user help for one of the programs thru their website, and they had me doing all kinds of different things: Clean Boot, "manually" download and install their update, etc., but nothing works. They, too, are baffled. Now they want me to create a separate "user account," and try that. But a "user" is not "administrator," and if it doesn't recognize me as administrator, it sure won't recognize an administrator in a user account.
I thought all this was the program/website fault, but when the same thing happened when I installed the second program, it got me to worrying that maybe there's something "off" in Windows 8.1.
Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
PS....I hesitate to post the names of the companies involved, or the software I'm installing, but I will if you all think it is OK. Both are fairly well-known companies; not fly-by-nights.

A:Unable to download updates to newly installed programs.

Try right clicking the program and click "Run as Administrator" then try your update.

We have 2 computers, 3 smartphones an Xbox and a Wii.  1 computer, 3 smartphones, the Xbox and the Wii all connect to the internet just fine.  Other computer cannot connect to the internet.  I can download Windows updates and I can access my work computer remotely using Remote Desktop Connection.  When I try to connect to the internet, I get the message, "This page can't be displayed." I then click the "Fix Connection Problem" button and it says, "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem."  The computer was infected recently with Malware which TdsKiller removed but the internet access on this computer has not been the same.  Initially it was very slow and then it would not connect and then when I tried again, it would.  Then I had to reset the router to get it to work.  Now resetting router does not work.I tried to install a new browser on the computer (i downloaded it on other computer and then saved it to a flashdrive) but when I tried to install it on the problem computer, it said I needed to connect to the internet to install.  Not sure how to fix.

Whenever I attempt to retrieve Ad-Aware updates I get the following message:

No connection to download server. Check your Internet connection.

Is anyone else having this problem? I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help me. (By the way, my Net connection is fine.) Could either Comodo firewall or Avast AV be interfering with the download process? They are both new on my system since I dropped ZoneAlarm Security Suite a few days ago.

I have used Ad-Aware for years with not problems -- until now.

Thank you very much.

My computer is unable to successfully download the windows updates for quite some time and whenever I attempt to download internet explorer I would receive an error message. Also I had an older version of MSN messenger on my computer and when I attempted to upgrade it, a message would pop up saying I already have it downloaded which I know is not true.

I have researched online for various methods on how to fix these issues, however none were successful.

I have Webroot Spy Sweeper (the paid version) installed on my PC. And today, I was told that I should download a new version and I did. I was subsequently asked to download the updates and I tried to but when Webroot tries to communicate with my PC, the program freezes and the updates cannot be downloaded. I also have Norton anti-virus and I tried to disable it to see if that was the reason I could not download the updates, but nothing changed. Any suggestions on how to fix the problem or how to get in touch with the Webroot Company?

Hi I've been struggling to remove some kind of virus from my computer. It redirects browser windows and won't let me download or update any malware removal tools. I used my laptop to download malwarebytes (not up to date b/c of update issue) and ran it but got no threats. Since the problem continued, I ran malware bytes in safe mode. It found 4 threats and I deleted these. Afterwards the problem remained and I now cannot enter safe mode.

I also tried booting from an AVG recovery CD, scanned and found one threat, deleted, problem remains. I can get into windows explorer but it will no let me edit All Users/Application Data.

Here is my hijackthis log.

Hi Guys ......... I'm new to the site. I apologize if this post is in the wrong section.

Backstory: I purchased a Gateway NE56R47U shipped with Windows 8 in late 2013. I attempted UNSUCCESSFULLY to upgrade to 8.1 in December 2013 with an 0x80070004 error. Prior to this 8.1 attempt, I was receiving all the windows updates. So out of total frustration, and a lack of a technical fix, I gave up and ran the laptop as is. I researched Microsoft Community, but I never saw a solution to my problem. I ran across your site my accident, and I'm glad I did. Now with the upcoming Windows 10 free upgrade on the horizon, I NEED to upgrade to 8.1 to comply with the upgrade requirements. But first I need to get ALL the Windows 8 updates I've missed since 12/13 installed on this laptop, and upgrade to 8.1 from the Windows Store.

In the past week I've tried numerous attempts to receive the win updates with limited success, I'm able to get Office 2010 updates, but nothing concerning Windows 8. I've ran the SFC scan and the DISM tool to the degree where they both come back clean with no errors. I've ran the Microsoft (FixIt) Windows Update trouble shooter numerous times where it says it has fixed all of the errors it finds. Looking at the Windows Update log, it states the 'Window Update Agent 7.8.9200.1694 failed'. This has produced two errors (8007371C and 800703F1), from subsequent tries.

So, I haven't been able to get any 8.0 win updates to download, either automatically or m... Read more

I'm having an odd problem. When I goto the Windows Update site, it scans my computer for updates I require. After choosing from the list I want to download, I start the download process. However, I keep getting the message that download failed for each of the files I try to download.

I can manually download updates by going to the downloads section of the MS site. I was able to use the update site about 6 weeks ago, however I have a feeling that by using AdAware, I might have deleted something inadvertently.

I have no problem downloading from other sites. I have disabled my firewall to see if that was causing the issue, but it didn't help.

Your assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

go into the device manager (right click on my computer and go to manage.) once there go to device manager, click on view (up at the top) and click show hidden devices. On the right hand pane you should now see a section that says non-plug and play drivers. Hit the plus sign and look for the thing that says TDSserv.sys (might be minor spelling but you get the idea). Right click on it and disable it (dont uninstall it).

Reboot the computer into safe mode again and attempt to update malewarebytes, and this should fix your problem (but i would definately download another program superantispyware and run it also just to be safe.

hope this helps if not let me know.

Hi i just bought a lenovo thinkpad t430 (this week) that came already with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit already installed and i'm having issues installing updates.

all the automatic updates would install but on reboot the install would fail (even with antivirus disabled and on safemode) reverting back to original settings.

i then went to do manual downloads and updates from the microsoft page. i managed to successfully install all of the "security update for windows" but all of the "update for windows 7 for x64 based systems" are the ones im having trouble with along with a few others.

on the manual download page for the KB2647753, KB2522422, etc (there are 10 of them total) i run into the validation required when i try to download. the actual download link for the windows activation tool (genuinecheck.exe) is "no longer supported. please download the newest version and ensure that your system clock is accurate".

i then went and manually downloaded MGAdiag.exe to run a manual diagnostic and this is what i get.

Hey guys, I recently changed my motherboard and cpu and was forced to reinstall my upgrade for vista home premium. Now that it has been reinstalled, I am unable to install any of the 54 required updates that are necessary for me to install the service pack. I would like to install these updates and service pack because frankly my Vista experience will suck without it. I've been on the phone with the microsoft guys for hours and have accomplished nothing. Here are some specs:

Intel Pentium 4; 3.4 ghz
2gb RAM, I have another 2gb stick that i'll install after the updates are made
Vista Home Premium Upgraded from Home Basic

Please let me know what you think-- or point me in the right direction if this question has already been answered. Thanks guys.

Hi there,

I wasn't sure where to post this, but ever since upgrading to Windows Vista, I've been unable to download from the download.microsoft.com website.

This means I'm unable to download software or Windows updates. There's no firewall blocking it or anything, the links just seem to time out. This happens in both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

What could be the problem?

Greetings,

I have been unable to download anything from microsoft.com, always get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpagepage" message. I cannot successfully ping download.microsoft.com, microsoft.com, etc., getting "request timed out message", and 100% loss of packets.

After many days of trying things including MTU's, examining the host file, run malwarebytes, CCleaner, HijackThis, and finally ComboFix, I am reaching out in this forum for help. I was scared to run the combofix as I am not a combofix guru, but I ran the scan and am posting the log file, which i don't know how to interpret. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I just cannot resolve this issue, and need to download stuf for software / database development.

Hi all,

I use Linux and CUPS to provide free and stable networking printing shares for our community centre. Its easy to connection windows xp clients to the linux printer server, windows 7 is a pain, I have a work around, but would like to make it more streamlined.

I can get some older printers that do not have official windows 7 drivers working by using windows update during the driver selection phase of the printer set-up procedure. And selecting a slightly different printer from the list of available windows update drivers.

While this method works, there is a delay of between 5-10 minutes after clicking the windows update button before the list of drivers appears.

I would like to know if its possible to do any of the following 2 ideas:

1. manually access these driver files on Microsoft website somewhere, and download them for latter use.

2. Find where windows 7 saves the downloaded driver files and package them some how so they can be re-distributed.

As always your comments/suggestions are very welcome.

I don't think there is a way to do that I would recommend that you set up a domain and be the system administrator for all fo the Windows 7 pcs, so you can install all of the updates on all of the computers at the same time.

Hello,

I am hoping someone here can help me out. The problem started when I tried to download GMATprep, free software from the MBA.com website. I think the download was taking too long with my slow internet speed so I cancelled the download halfway through.

I have since deleted the folder that was created and made sure that there were no GMATprep programs in the uninstall list for me to uninstall. Well, when I go back to MBA.com website to attempt to download again, the download link does nothing at all. No window pops up asking to save or run, nothing happens. I have tried it with IE and with google chrome and still nothing.

I have contacted GMAT Tech Support but all they advised me to do is delete my browsing history in IE and try to download again. I have done this and still nothing.

Any suggestions?

I was downloading Custom Content for the Sims, and since they're all .RAR files, I set the notification that comes up, to open in WinRAR and then clicked the automatically do this from now on box 'cos I was downloading quite a few. Is there a way to undo this since now all my .RAR files are being saved in the Temp folders and are opening in WinRAR. I've looked on google, and it only describes how to click the 'automatically do this from now box' and not how to undo this. Can anyone help? (Happy Saint Patrick's Day)

A:Firefox: 'Automatically Download'

Right click the file again. choose "open with" then uncheck the box.

Hi:

I am trying to download the Win 7/64 bit OS ISO, but it is hanging at 105 MB. The download is using my computers NTI CD & DVD-maker to download the ISO. The download says it has 5 1/2 hours left, but if hanging it could take days. So what's up here? Or what should I do to get the download to download?

I've stopped and restarted several times, but it just gets to a certain point and stops.

Thanks.

A:Win 7 ISO download hangs

By choosing during downloading to open the ISO with that program, it downloads it to a temp file that is hard to find, plus that DVD burner will not work since the ISO needs a special ISO burner to burn it correctly.

For this reason cancel the download and download again choosing this time to Save the ISO (normally to Downloads folder by default) then after it finishes use ImgBurn at 4x speed which works to burn the DVD every time.

If it hangs again try another browser. I recommend Firefox which installs easily and works perfectly with rarely any issues.

Hi!

There's this site where I usually generate and download a CSV file from - and the download is usually automatic. However, I tried doing this for the last couple of days but the download didn't start automatically.

I've tested this across multiple browsers on the same PC (Chrome, IE, Firefox) but the problem remains. Any ideas on what to do? Is it possible that my antivirus or MS Defender are blocking it?

I've also checked with the site admin and he said that there's no problem on their part. I've also verified this with other users who didn't seem to have the problem.

Thank you!

Karen

In our domain, we recently updated from IE9 to IE10. After reconfiguring the GPOs we stumbled upon a problem with the starting site. The IE automatically opens the URL http://windows.microsoft.com/de-de/internet-explorer/download-ie .
If I close the website, it reappears after resetting the IE settings.
I would like to configure my IE-GPO to not open this website - ever. Since it already became problematic when some users updated to IE11 and we had to roll them back since it is not supported atm.

Can you please advise on how to do it?

Hello,

My father has Verizon DSL for his ISP. He uses AOL 9.0 for email and AOL now lets users read their AOL email using Outlook. He has Outlook 2003.

When he opens an email with an attachment in Outlook, it seems like the attachment automatically gets downloaded, because it takes a long time for emails with attachments to open. After the email finally opens, when he clicks on the attachment, the attachment opens immediately and doesn't ask him to "Open, Save or Cancel". It just opens. (I guess into a temp folder).

Does anyone know why attachments seems to automatically download into a temp file when he opens an email?

Thanks

Heya,

I've just made the jump back from Mac to PC . I used to use Mac's automater to download an e- version of my free to distribute daily newspaper, start my mail program, attach the file to an email and send it to my Kindle. It was all quite easy to set up.

I'm looking for a way of doing this in Windows 7 but so far I'm not getting many hits on Google. Task Scheduler doesn't seem quite as flexible. Could anyone help me with how I do this?

Thanks!

Hello,

Have you tried to run a HJT log, and post it in the Virus and Mal ware forum.

That normally does the trick in pinning the problem down. Instructions on how to use HJT is a stickied thread in the section.

Hope it Helps!

For about 3 to 4 weeks now, nearly everytime I get online (using Juno speedband) my service starts to get really slow, so I logoff only to find that an unidentified update is downloading while I surf. I can't see if the download is happening untill I click log-off. Once I click log-off I get this message:

We are downloading additional features of our software that will enhance your user experience. You will be automatically logged off after the download is complete.

Beneath that is a progress bar, that shows it is downloading part I of II.

I thought this might be connected to windows, so I set windows XP to notify only but not automatically download AND then downloaded every windows update I require including SP2. No change though, I'm still getting the phantom download.

I have a 2-month-old Compaq Presario with Office professional. Only other software I've added was Norton Internet Security (which I've set to update automatically, but they always identify their updates), Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Spyblaster. All are up to date yet the phantom returns.

Any thoughts? How can I stop this? I got so frustrated one day, I decided to let the damn thing completely download, but once it did there was no install program, and the next time online it all started all over again.

I was doing routine computer work on the evening of 8/19/15 when I started getting warnings from Verizon Wireless about my JetPack data utilization. (I am on a 5GB/month plan, and 3.55+GB were used in that one evening.)

The tech at Verizon said the usage occurred in the "Communications and Device Services," which includes Windows updates and stuff I don't use (such as Skype).  My computer's update history shows only one update on 8-19-15, and that is

"Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3087985).
Could that update possibly have used 3.55 GB of my data allowance?  What is the maximum it could have used?

From time to time, I get a random pop that I see on my desktop and it randomly downloads something, which takes less than one second, before automatically disabling my default anti virus. The pop up box interface looks like it was from windows xp( chunky box, dull color, unlike windows 8.1 enhanced design). I couldn't read what the box was for in time.

I then have to go back to action center to set my anti virus back on as default AV.

Funnily enough, when I open my anti virus program for a split second, it says that "Your computer is not secure!" and then quickly changes to "Your computer is secure!" I'll include the .png file down below to show you what I mean. It does this every time I open it.

My security programs
Anti virus - Avira (Free)
Anti malware - Malwarebytes Anti-Malware(Premium trial)

I scanned with the anti malware and it came up as nothing and scanned with the anti virus as well.

Hi all.

I recently installed RealPlayer 11 on my dad's laptop, so he can watch and download video clips from sites like YouTube (he likes watching police chases, funny videos and the like).

He's running Windows Vista SP1, and Internet Explorer 7, if this is relevant.

Now then, before RealPlayer was installed, when he wanted to download a file, it would ask whether he wants to save the file or download it directly, as it usually does. But afterwards, when he selects to download a file, it bypasses this and downloads automatically, and I have to search for it in the Temporary Internet Files.

Does anyone know what might have happened with this, and how to get it back to prompting to save? Thank you in advanced.

Hi,

I know this one is dead simply, but it's elluding me. During a click on a link for a download of a zip file, I accidently clicked on open file and I think maybe there was an additional ? about not asking again, etc.

So now when I try to download a ZIPed file it automatically opens it with WinZIP. Any know where the setting adjustment would be for this. I want automatically assume that I am saving it to a drive and not opening it.

Thanks

A school I help at has a lab full of students who watch the news at www.ChannelOne.com every day, and then read related articles. The problem is that the whole school shares one DSL connection. This causes the rest of the school practically lose Internet connectivity while the lab full of students watch the news video slowly buffer.

One possible solution is to show the video on one computer (using a projector) and then have the kids read the articles on their own (obviously, a lab full of kids reading articles doesn't hurt like a lab full of streaming videos).

I once wrote a small script to automatically download a video to their local server, so that all of the kids could watch the video from their local server instead of over the Internet. The problem is that I can't figure out where to download the video from ChannelOne. They're not opposed to us downloading the file and then letting the kids use their site after watching the video locally, but they don't support actually doing it.

I could use a screen capture program to record it, but that would require a teacher actually playing it (and recording it) first. It would be so much nicer to be able to just download a file.
