When trying to view my disks in Computer Management>Disk Management, I get "Connecting to Virtual Disk Service" for several minutes, then "Loading disk configuration information" nearly forever. After about 20 minutes, some information appears, but I can't scroll the window to see all the data.

Also - I'm now having trouble creating and re-naming new folders in Win Explorer. It "feels" like it's related. Has something else got control of my drives? Any suggestions welcome.

A:Disk Management hangs at "Loading disk configuration information"

Same issue except no problem with renaming folders.

Following services are running:

Virtual Disk set to Manual
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Plug and Play

Logged in as administrator account. Drives check out OK with manufacturers diagnostic tools.

Running MMC and adding the Snap-in for Disk Management(Local) does not fix the issue. I'm guessing there's a problematic registry setting for a drive that use to exist or is now having an issue. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm so glad found you, maybe you've seen this before:

When I turn on my computer it starts a normal bootup cycle then goes to a black screen with white typeface saying;

"Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A07
Dell DM051 Series
BIOS Version A07

Driver not found: Parallel ATA, PATA-0 (PRI IDE Master)
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup utility"

Striking F1 gives me a look alike screen saying;

"Which operating system do you want to start:

Windows XP Media Center Edition [High-lighted + Enter does nothing]
Windows XP Default" - [This takes me to a normal Windows XP Media Center boot-up cycle.]

With the knowledge that the two front USB Ports with headphone & mic input jacks [I think it's a bad modual that I can not find] are unhooked from the mother board.
Can someone tell me how to configure the set-up utility so I have a normal bootup sequence?

A:Computer Disk Configuration Problem [I think!]

To help you troubleshoot a problem, your computer has four diagnostic lights labeled "1," "2," "3," and "4" on the front panel. When the computer starts normally, the lights flash. If the POST portion of system boot completes successfully, all four lights display solid green. If the computer malfunctions during the POST process, the pattern displayed on the lights may help identify where in the process the computer halted.Click to expand...

I suspect that all four are green? If not, please clarify.

If I read your specs correctly, your boot drive should be a sata drive, not pata.
This may mean that your system cannot find your sata drive and so is looking for another alternative.
Have you attempted the following?

Starting the Dell Diagnostics From the Optional Drivers and Utilities CD

1. Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD.
2. Shut down and restart the computer.
When the DELL logo appears, press <F12> immediately.
If you wait too long and the Windows logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer and try again.
NOTE: The next steps change the boot sequence for one time only. On the next start-up, the computer boots according to the devices specified in system setup.

3. When the boot device list appears, highlight IDE CD-ROM Device and press <Enter>.

Do I get best performance by installing win xp on SATA hd and also installing the game on SATA hd? Or is installing the game on IDE hd good as well?
Is it different when I install win xp on IDE hd and install the game on SATA?

I'm having a problem.
It started when I downloaded Windows xp(Home) onto a laptop (IBM ThinkPad) Well, I didnt realize at the time that I misplaced the product key, and when I got to that point in the downlkoad I could go no further. I found another windows xp version(Student and Teacher) that I did have a key for, but I couldnt stop the previous windows installation from restarting EVERY time it rebooted. It had windows xp (professional) on it when I began , but it was not working properly, hence the download. It is a used laptop and I dont have access to that original disk.
So I went searching on the web to find out how to stop it. Well, I am not too savy with the inner workings of a computer and took to trying anything to stop it, since nothing I was trying was working.
The last thing I tried was changing the boot.ini file and that has only made things worse!
Now, I am only getting the error message: "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem..." I'm sure you know the rest. So it will reboot whenever I hit any button. I get the IBM screen with the F1 & F12 options then back to the error screen. NOTHING ELSE!
I've gone into BIOS and and tried every boot option, and none have worked. I'm completly lost at this point.
I cant get a command prompt, or any kind of access to the boot.ini file to change it back.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You'll have to get into the BIOS, change the startup drive to CD/DVD, and boot from your Student/Teacher CD. Once you boot from the CD, you may (slight chance) be able to use the recovery console, but you're better off at this point to do a fresh install. You'll jusst have to go through the hassle of knowing which drivers you need (unless you know all the computer specs):slurp:

This is a bit complicated! Prior to installing Windows 8 my computer went through the following "Evolutionary steps"

1. New motherboard fitted
2. Windows XP installed (baseline full install)
3. Windows 7 upgrade installed on a new disk drive, which then became drive C: - I created a dual boot system
it was also possible to boot Windows XP from what then became drive D:
4. Installed Windows 8 upgrade onto drive C: (also created a bootable USB dive with Windows 8 upgrade on it)
5. After installation, deleted the Windows.Old (Windows 7) because was running out of disk space
6. Deleted all files off the Windows XP Drive C:

In terms of hardware ID's the Windows 8 drive C: is hardware ID 0
The Windows XP disk drive D: is hardware ID 2

Now I am trying to "reclaim" the old Windows XP drive and reformat it for general use, I don't want to use it as a system disk.
The system will not let me!! Here is the status from DISKPART:

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.

Once that's done do a clean install, deleting all partitions on the hard drive so it's a completely un-allocated, then click Next. Let the install create the partitions it needs.

I have bought a SATA HDD, to replace my old IDE drive, but cannot get it to work! I have followed the instructions in my mobo manual, but the result has been that my machine is now unusable!

I have a Jetway V600 DAP mobo, and am trying to install a Samsung Spinpoint 80gig SATA HDD, with Windows XP.

So far I have taken the following steps;

I removed old HDD and installed new drive, inserted Windows XP cd, and pressed F6 key at the system prompt for SATA driver. I inserted Floppy Disc with driver, which seemed to load ok.

System installed some files, then started to format HDD, this seemed to stop short of a full format, and system the rebooted.

Upon reboot the message "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem, could not read from selected boot disks, check boot path and disk hardware"

I don't know what to do next, please help, I'm desperate!!!!

This sounds straight forward, but I can not figure this out I am new to this. I have a Etower 500 MHz with 192 mb's of memory and 4 gig hard drive. I used partition magic 3.5 to partition the drive inorder to try and install DOS and win98 and maybe linux. I am following the instructions from this web site here>> I am using the disks that I made from downloading from this site referring to REUEL Boot disk this disk took me through the entire process. It all went great until I rebooted and I keep getting Non-System disk or disk error I have no disk's in the drives. I even installed win98 and all it did was go straight to windows. With in windows I could see the drives I partitioned all of them except the one that windows was actually on. I have done this again and again trying to see if I did anything wrong. Anybody know what is wrong?
Also can anyone tell me how to get free dos I can not figure out what files to download. The one that I am trying to install now is suppose to be mini dos 6.22. I am really new to dos so I am doing a lot of guessing.

Hi all,

I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to fix my computer. The problem started today and goes as follows: Whenever I try to start my machine up, it gives me the message "windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem". I have tried formatting, reformatting, and doing that some more. I have tried using the command chkdsk /r in the XP recoverty console. I don't know exactly what's up with my disk. I believe I cought some sort of virus or something that modified my hd perhaps. But, anyways, I can't even install XP (Home or Professional) because after it finishes formatting and copying the necessary files to the HD, it reboots and just goes back to this same error. I am out of idea so please ANYONE'S help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Try downloading the diagnostic software provided by the manufacturer of the drive - for example, Seagate provide SeaTools and Maxtor provide PowerMax - I know others do the same.

Follow the instructions carefully to run a check of the hard drive and see if this sheds any further light on the issue.

hey guys, hoping someone can help me out, having a problem with my machine.

i booted the desktop with my xp disk and when asked which drive to install xp on, chose my portable hard drive. the installation was about 35% when i went downstairs. when i got back up the vista dekstop was desplaying the following message:

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop due to many being that I couldn't open the external hd after I had unplugged it and replugged it in.

After the fresh install of Windows 7, when I open computer menu, it shows the external hd, but has no info about the storage space left on it like the other drives in computer menu, and the green bar at the top loads endlessly.

In Device Manager, it shows up and I updated the drive and it said I already had the latest driver.

When I tried to uninstall through Device Manager, once again, it gets hung up on the uninstall endlessly.

When I go to computer management and click on disk management, there is nothing in the menu, but at the bottom, it says "loading disk configuration information...." endlessly.

Is it because I have a 1.5 tb external hd that's nearly full, and it's just going to take a long time to configure?

Can someone please help me out...I can't lose the files on there.

A:WD External HD hangs up "loading disk configuration information...

Just leave the Disk Management running in the background with your external drive connected to a rear USB port and keep doing other work. (Edit: It just escaped my mind that yours is a laptop. So rear USB port doesn't apply here.)

Sometimes it may take two to three hours to come up and once it comes up, you will have no further problem. ( Its going to be a real problem only if it doesn't come up even after running for three hours.)

Before doing this long run, you may prefer to check the external drive on another computer, if possible.

Edit: Since it is an OEM machine, I am curious to know how you are doing a fresh install - which Windows install media?

I am using a Professional Dell Laptop under Windows 7.
I am also using this computer booting on an external SSD with Windows 8 from the eSata port (with my private stuff).
On the regular HDD, I have 3 partitions (No letter: Reserved system, C: Win7, D: Data). I access only to Data partition.
I had 3 times the same strange problem:
After using Windows 8, the system is no longer booting in Windows 7 (BSOD). If I reboot in Windows 8, access to Windows 7 partition is denied.
I tried to change the permissions, it is not possible because it is greyed, but I can create a full access for "Everyone".
When rebooting, it seems to work but boot is never finishing (grey screen with the mouse active).
At the end, I found no other solution than restoring the partition from a backup image.
Is some of you understanding what is happening and what can be done to avoid that?
(for the moment, I am disabling the HDD from the bios, but obviously I am loosing the access to Data partition).

Hi all,

Here's what's happened...

i have Windows 7 on a 500GB SATA hd running fine.

Yesterday I decided to install Windows XP Pro SP3 on a spare 160GB SATA HDD which I have, and I did this via the notebook upgrade bay (2nd HDD caddy) where the DVD drive would be. I left my 500GB internal (Windows 7) HDD in the computer and during the XP setup DVD specified for it to install on the 160GB HDD.

The problem is every time I boot my computer, it tries to boot XP.. even if i change the boot sequence or try to manually boot the internal HDD from the boot menu...

i tried to remove the 160GB XP hard drive hoping that this would leave the computer to boot the 500GB Windows 7 x64 OS... But instead i get this message on the screen..

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."

Can anyone give me any advice on what I need to do to be able to boot properly into my Windows 7 HDD again?

I have Hirens BootCD at my disposal and have managed to boot into Windows 7 fine using the option presented on the first screen. After a reboot the message above returns...

Many thanks in advance,

Hey there,

I'm on windows XP

when it comes to installing many new applications (not pirated or anything) I get this error

This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

It has happened both for the new MSN (Im stuck using windows messenger) and Ableton Live 8.03

I've obviously tried reinstalling a whole bunch of times, but no luck. Is my only option here reformat, could it be something viral? Or something more simple (i hope!)

Cheers and thanks a lot

I'm on ADSL Zoom X3 modem connected to my PC with No other Router connected

when I used a bittorrent for the 1st time (Azureus), I got NAT error problems, this happened to everything I tried.
It tells me I have no remote access & icons stay on yellow?
I checked all the wizard configurations & whatnot, they all told me I have a NAT error

I just want to know if theres anything I can do? because when I switched to my AOL 56k connection, the NAT error was not present there
SO is my NAT messed up or not set up correctly???

I don't have a router so I can't open any ports only on it,
I'm only with my DSL modem, so I went to my DSL setup page

the screen had this info:

NAT : Enable
Mode: Dynamic

Session: blank (no other options listed but can be typed on)
User IP: blank (no other options listed but can be typed on)
Action: add (& another option for delete)

Number | Session | Name | User IP
# of NAT configurations: 0
I tried switching to disable NAT!
the description makes it seem like hackers can get to my IP & whatnot without it, but I tried anyways, BUT I could not connect to the net anymore after that, I had to re-enable it.

All I know on on Azureus is that in options it states 6881 as the incoming TCP listing port.
there is no Session or User IP info there to find & typing 6881 on User IP just tells me it's an inncorrect IP
can anyone help?
anyone with any knowledge of this??
is it poss... Read more

Hello there. I hope I have posted this message in the right area. This morning I fired up my pc to find an error greeting me. It was that windows was missing a configuration file. I rebooted a couple of times then it came back up.

Once it did tho, it went through reloading all my hardware. Everything was fine so I thought. I then realized there was no sound. Xp is showing the Realtek onboard sound card there, indicating under Audio Devices, Properties that "This device is working properly" and "Driver is enabled but has not been started". However, under the main Volume tab it shows "No Audio Device".

I have verified under Services that Windows Audio is started and running (set to 'Automatic'). I have attempted to remove and resintall the device, tried alternate drivers, all to no avail. Any suggestions or recommendations on how to proceed would be so greatly appreciated!

I don't mess with HP very much (I compac/HP) I have also did my research on the problem, and I know its got a tatoo on the mother board(haven't added any hardware, and the reason for the restore everytime I tried to logon, it would say saving settings and restart) Of course this computer hasn't came with a restore disk, its on a partition of its own. I have a laptop that on my wireless school network would connect fine and automatically. The network is a guest network so it is unsecured. I recently had to reinstall the operating system on my laptop to fix several access rights errors and others (reinstalled Vista). After the reinstall I am having a lot of trouble accessing the internet on the school network. The network and sharing chart will occasionally show that I'm connected to the public network and it will also go all the way through to internet access but my pages wont load and I don't have connection (I use google chrome as my browser but thats not the issue).

I've tried:

-Pinging common websites, it comes back and tells me that I have entered the name wrong which is odd.
-Restarting my computer
-Restarting my laptops wireless adapter
-Checked wireless connections at my house and at other network in my computer engineering class, all of which give me full access to the internet.
-Check DNS information I get a DNS error from doing a diagnosis(this I may not have done right so more information would be great). The diagnosis says I can't connect to common dns server
-When it says I have internet and I go to a page I get a error about not being able to resolve the server

I recently booted up my Gateway notebook only to find the "blue screen of death"

I rebooted and it came up to a windows boot manager screen which says windows failed to start..insert installation disc and click repair to fix...blah blah...i'm sure you know the story...

My question is, I booted the Vista disc and when I click repair it doesn't even find the C: drive...when I try and run the BCD fix from the command prompt screen, it says it found 0 Windows installations...would this indicate a faulty hard drive?? If so, I dont mind replacing the drive, I just wanna make sure this is the issue before I spend the money to replace it...

Much thanks for any help anyone can offer!

A:Boot Configuration Data Error

I'm not sure what BCD fix you tried, but see if it is this one and if not, try this one.

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps: (you need a Vista Installation Disk to do this)

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note If rebuilding the BCD does not resolve the startup issue, you can export and delete the BCD, and then run this option again. By doing this, you make sure that the BCD is completely rebuilt. To do this, type the following commands at the Windows RE command prompt:
 bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
 c:
 cd boot
 attrib bcd -s -h -r
 ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /RebuildBcd

See if that works.

If you don't have the disk (or that didn't work), try EasyBCD and see if that helps resolve the problem.

If that doesn't work, you probably have some type of hardware problem - but it's hard to tell. It may be as simple as the hard drive cable got disconnected a... Read more

A:0662 Configuration Change Error

I work on several of these. Really bad design. Very crowded, no air circulation (heat) and underpowered (poor voltage=hard drive errors, system file corruption, etc...)
I assume you've tried this procedure:

If the settings do not "stick" I would do the following:

Reseat the RAM.
Remove CMOS battery, clear CMOS (test battery while it's out. If it's low, replace it.)
Try disconnecting all peripherals (hard drive and optical drive) and see if the problem changes or stays the same.
If you can't get the symptom to change at all, I'd try reflashing the BIOS as a last resort. The motherboard might be bad. Might be power supply. Those power supplies cost more than the whole box is worth. Is this your machine?

Any suggestions?

A:I have a configuration error that is preventing me from printing.

If you can still print from other applications but not Live Mail then it sounds like something's wrong with Live Mail accessing the printer. Maybe a re-installation of Live Mail is necessary.
My guess is if you provide more info on what exactly it is that keeps you from printing you'll get more feedback here.
Is there an error message? Or any other info to go by?
A print option dialog screen with a number of installed printers etc?

I'm trying to install a PC with Windows 7 threw USB (2.0). Therefore I've used Windows USB/DVD Tool.
To note, I've installed a NEW hard drive, the old one broke down due to it's age.

Now I'm getting the next message: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK.

I've tried setting the boot sequence but none of that helped, I keep getting the same message.

Thanks in advance,

A:Windows 7 Installation error DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK

Normally means that the hard drive is not detected. Check its connections, plugged securely into SATA1 port with no others attached, data and power cable securely attached.

Then enter BIOS setup by tapping the key given for that on the first screen. Is the hard drive registering anywhere there? It often will be represented by its Serial Number.

Reset BIOS to defaults, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save settings and Exit.

hello everybody here at B.C

As this topic mentions this is supposed to be a BIOS guide, not exactly tho....
I will write about what i have encountered and worked with when it comes to this motherboard in hope to expand this knowledge and hopefully finding a solution with a broader network.

As mentioned this is the ABIT AN8 Fatal1ty S939 Motherboard without the SLI = double PCI EXPRESS installed
Basically my old motherboard stopped functioning so i had to replace it with the Abit Fatal1ty, at first i was very pleased becouse i read alot of positive stuff about it, altho i dont really like too much advertising this motherboard looked promising.
A part of the horror that struck me was that i needed to install WinXp from start, there were reports of users who could simply do a repair of winxp so they wont loose any valuable data, but in my case i didnt have that option, my windows could not be saved. Since i had 3 HDD's i plugged in another one after backing it up from another pc, becouse i simply mistook it for the hdd that had winxo on it, anyway i thought to myself i could backup my winxp containing drive at a later state when i get winxp installed on the drive i just cleaned. I then instaled all the hardware where it belongs and booted up and put in the WinXp SP2 cd and ran thru the first part of the setup ( where the files get copied over to your hdd before the restart )
All went well and the pc gave me as usual a 15 second timline to restart or it would do it by its... Read more

A:Bios's ( Disk Boot Error Please Insert System Disk And Press Enter )

Simply put, the disk that you think that you are booting from, and the disk that you are booting from, are not the same. I did the same thing myself not too long ago. Pull out the other disks and install XP. Once it is working, then install the other hard drives. If you are sure that you are booting from the same drive on which XP is installed, then the disk is thrashed.
You said you took out a disk from another system and it booted fine. How about trying this? Take the disk out of your system that you think is the one with XP on it, and see if if it will boot the other machine?
This is no huge mystery. It can only be one of very few things.

I was trying to plug in headphones and accidentally disconnected my sound card, during which my windows explorer started to unexpectedly shut down. I restarted the computer
right after it had re-loaded and was not able to load back up after it shut down.

It gave me the "Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter" message. I did that and it goes to "Loading Files from Windows", completes it and then goes to the boot screen where Windows is suppose to load up. The bar cycles through 7 times and then freezes for several minutes before going to the BSOD. I don't seem to ever get the option to go to the Windows Repair Console and I'm not sure at which step I'd be prompted to do so, I've tried every option given and none of them will take me to it.

I've tried loading in safe mode but it doesn't do anything different, tried boot logging but I'm not sure where I'd go to see the result. I also tried loading windows using my system disk and system disk I downloaded off the web on an external cdrom, same problem. Does anyone have any possible solutions for me?

Thank you.

Ok so I recently built myself from a barebones system a very nice PC:
AMD Athlon64 3500 2.2ghz
MSI K8N Platinum Motherboard
MSI Nvidia GeForce 6600GT Graphics Card
1 1Gb Ram stick
10x24x40 TDK CD-RW Rom
Western Digital 160gb SATA Hard Drive
Windows XP Professional

This configuration worked wonderfully even after I added an old IDE Westeren Digital 40gig Hard drive which had win98 on it.

I started getting problems after I added some more stuff to it
1 512mb Ram Stick
Maxtor 120gig IDE Hard Drive (with WinXP Home on it... brothers old computer hard drive)
Floppy Drive

The error I started getting came after the "Verifying DMI Pool...."
then I get "boot from cd..."
"Disk Boot Error, please insert system disk and press enter"

I've tried everything i can think of... i've tried every single combination of CD Drives and Hard Drives (Including putting it back to the orriginal configuration)

I've tried using new IDE cables, making sure everything is plugged in correctly and such.

I've even reformatted the main hard drive and reinstalled WinXP Pro (which worked... til this morning when the same problems started over again). I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix it, if anyone can help i'd really appreciate it

there is this pentium 4 pc that i am working on. it is able to detect the hard drive but it tells me"DISK BOOT ERROR, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". does it mean the hard drive is bad? how do i solve this problem

A:Disk boot error, insert system disk and press enter

Either the hard drive has failed, there is no OS on it, or the boot code is missing/corrupt.
You can test the drive with Seagate SeaTools for DOS, which runs from a CD in DOS. Download it by clicking "Downloads" on this page:

Now download and install IMGBurn from here:
Use IMGBurn to create a CD from the SeaTools ISO file, then boot the faulty PC from that CD.
SeaTools will eventually open. Select the hard drive to be tested and run the short test on it.
If it says "Failed", you need a new hard drive.

If it does not say "Failed", this time run the long test on it just to be sure it's okay.

If the drive passes the long test okay, you just need to install a (legal) copy of Windows on it.

Hello everybody, i need your help. My computer froze and I tried everything to get it working again (exit, ctrl+alt+delete, patience) , but it stayed frozen then went to a blue screen. Forgot what screen said but main part was telling me to reboot the Computer, I turned off by power button because no other way to shut it off.
Then when i turned it on again, my computer was making weird noises, then went to ntdlr error after very long time. I press enter then it boots again and shows the "boot system error...".

Im running windows xp sp2 and main drive is C... I'm pretty sure i have a D: too.

My questions are:

1) Can my files still be recovered and if so how?
2) How can i fix this problem?

Please and Thankyou

I recently swapped out my Maxtor 80GB Master and 60GB Slave harddrive for a Western Digital 250GB harddrive. When I boot I get the Disk Boot Error. My boot order is CD-ROM -> HDD 0 -> HDD 1. I have a CD-ROM/RW and DVD-ROM/RW and they are cabled and mastered/slaved properly.

I'm trying to install Windows XP on this new HDD, but I can't get to anything in windows, such as partioning, etc. I believe it is a hardware issue but I'm not sure.

I tried resetting the battery on my Mobo, switching in and out different peripherals but nothing is working.

I know the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM are working as the CD is still spinning when I open them.

I took out the slave drive just so I can see if I can get by all this to install windows to the big drive and just add the other one later, but I'm still having the problem.

The only problems I can see happening are:

1.) Bad cables
2.) Bad Mobo
3.) Bad CDROM
4.) Bad Disk

Any help would be much appreciated.

There was a power outage at my house yesterday while I was away. When I came home my computer screen was black and displayed the message: boot disk error, insert system disk and press enter.

Here is what I have done thus far:
I tried rebooting but the message persisted (after going through the initial information about IDE stuff).
I went into the bios to see if my hard drive was dead, but the bios still recognized it and my secondary hard drive.
I also tried to boot from a Window XP cd and repair Windows on my master drive, but the error message came up regardless of the cd drive I used (I have a CD drive and a CDRW/DVD drive). In both instances where I had the CD in one of the two CD drives, the CD was spinning (and presumably being read) but I could never get the computer to boot off of it. (Note: I tried both CD drives, because my bios is set to boot off CD first, although I don't know which CD drive it actually looks at first.)
I opened up my computer and made sure that all of the connections were secure and fit.

Does anyone have any other ideas as to what is going on?

Thanks for your time.

A:What is the cause of this: boot disk error, insert system disk and press enter

Try this:

Shut down all power to your PC by unplugging everything. Let it set for a minute or two, plug the power back in and try booting.

I know it sounds strange but it worked for me when I had a similar problem.

The error means that you have a hard drive failure and you will need to replace it. I'm not sure if you can still retrieve your data from it.

I have a friends computer that won't boot anymore. I figure it was the motherboard since swapping out power suppy with known good one still resulted in a dead box. No lights, nada. No one home at all. Hard drive seems to be OK. I used driveimage xml to make a backup of the drive before attempting a recovery in another machine that wasn't in use. The recovery repair (2nd option) runs just fine but won't boot upon startup.
I can do an "upgrade" install of another OS (resulting in windows.old file), but drive is too small for such a thing. I can do a full install on that hard drive and it will boot and run just fine. It's the image that I can't get to boot. I currently have it imaged on a healthy 75.4 gb drive which...won't...boot....
It was running windows home. I honestly don't remember if it was premium or basic. All I want is to be able to get it up and running so my friend can get his info/programs/whatever all in order until he can get a new machine.
I formated it properly, but something is wrong with the original image that just won't allow me to boot. My vacation time is fast running out. Every time I need to redo the image I lose 3-4 hrs .
I did attempt to write a new mbr. I either did it wrong or that wasn't my problem.

Thank you for your time and asistance,

A:Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready.

Well...if it IS the motherboard...which aligns with your suspicions...I don't know what to suggest.

<<I used driveimage xml to make a backup of the drive before attempting a recovery in another machine that wasn't in use>>
System manufacturer and model?

<<I figure it was the motherboard since swapping out power suppy with known good one still resulted in a dead box. No lights, nada>>

The PSU sounds like a good suspect when there are no signs of life, IMO.

<<I can do an "upgrade" install of another OS (resulting in windows.old file), but drive is too small for such a thing. I can do a full install on that hard drive and it will boot and run just fine.>>

What drive are you talking about...the original hard drive? If that's would appear that the motherboard is not at fault.

<<It's the image that I can't get to boot. I currently have it imaged on a healthy 75.4 gb drive which...won't...boot....>>

What's the error message when you try to boot the image on different hard drive? Is that when you get the error message you cited?

Non-system disk means that the boot options are wrong, generally speaking. Have you checked the BIOS settings? A bad/failing CMOS battery could also be reasonably expected to possibly produce that error.

Did you check the cloned drive...for the proper boot.ini file?

I have IOmega 1 TB hard drive. 2 days ago, my comp restarted suddenly after which my external drive is corrupted.

I get the error 'H: is not accessble' The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.
It shows up in the disk management as RAW file system,

I have almost 700 GB of important documents, pictures & files that I don't want to lose.
Does anybody know of any good recovery software that can help.

A:Hard disk Error - The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

Hi r4hara,

Welcome to SevenForums.

You seem to have lost the partition somehow and that seems to be the reason why it had turned RAW.

IMO, the best free software to do the recovery from a RAW disk is Test Disk. TestDisk - CGSecurity

It can be a little daunting for the first time user, and so take your time to read through all the documentation.

First use PhotoRec in it - which does not write anything to the drive in question - and try to recover the files.

Then you can use TestDisk and try to rewrite the partition. Some people have reported that even after restoring the partition with TestDisk, the drive remained RAW but they were able to recover most files using the option to copy.

Whether PhotoRec or TestDisk, it is going to take a lot of time to recover the files. Copy them to another external drive with adequate capacity.

You may find some help here to understand the usage.

Hi everyone.

Going crazy with this. So about 2 weeks ago, my "intel rapid storage technology" software gave me an error. I opened it and saw that one of the disks (2 disk array) in my Raid 0 array, had an error. I reset it back to normal and left it. Then I started to get pop ups saying that files were corrupt over the course of the next few days. My OS still worked and everything worked as usual, except my sound card. I have no more sound from anything plugged into the jacks, only USB connected audio works.

So, I attempted to run a check disk to fix said errors, but I get a message that the drive is not accessible due to a recent software package install "error 766f6c756d652e63 3f1". I went into my system restore and all restore points are gone, except one. When I click on it, it says the drive is not accessible.

Today, I installed 2 new 1TB hybrid drives in another Raid 0 volume (yes I know...but that's what I am using for now). When I went to write the system image, it said the disk had errors and to run a check disk first......which I can not.. I clicked ignore and let it go and write the system image with the errors. When it is done, do you think that I will be able to run a check disk on the new drives (2nd array, since it will not be inaccessible) to repair the errors that it wrote from the bad disk?

I am not sure where to go from here. My PC is still up and running and almost finished copying the image to the two new drives. My hopes are th... Read more

very frustrated.
any help would be appreciated.
