MSN Weather app no longer works on multiple Windows 8.1 devices - server issue

Q: MSN Weather app no longer works on multiple Windows 8.1 devices - server issue

Since 09/28/2015 the Windows 8.1 MSN Weather app won't start anymore. It is stuck at start screen with throbber, no errors in Event Log. It happens on multiple
different devices with multiple different Microsoft accounts. I have also tried different Internet connection.

I tried to reinstall the app. It helped for first run but after closed, next time it is stuck again. Although Start screen live tile still updates correctly. The after-reinstall behavior is exactly the same on multiple devices and Microsoft accounts again.
It must be a server side issue, please check it.

Steps to reproduce:

You need Windows 8.1 OS, all Windows Updates applied and being logged to account that's connected to a Microsoft account

1. Uninstall MSN Weather app
2. Go to Store and install MSN Weather app again, latest version is 3.0.4.336
3. Run the MSN Weather app, select a city ... works now
4. Close the application (important step !) either by close button (mouse) or the Windows 8 close gesture (touchscreen)
5. Run the MSN Weather app again

Now you should be able to reproduce the issue, the app is stuck at start screen with throbber. If not, repeat steps 4 and 5 multiple times or restart the OS instead of step 4.

The steps above are reproducible on multiple devices, multiple Microsoft accounts and different Windows locales. Disconnecting the MSN Weather app from Microsoft account personalization in step 3 does not help either.
Please do not recommend to run the App Troubleshooter, it can not fix it which is clear from the steps above. There are currently

another 3 users having the same issue but I am not sure I can get help (other than generic "run the App Troubleshooter") in the Microsoft Answers forum.
Additional notes: I have also tried to create a new local Windows account that is
not connected to a Microsoft account, thus I can not update the MSN Weather app from Store, it is version is 3.0.2.258. This time the issue is not present so the bug is probably caused by the
connection to the Microsoft account or recent version of the app or some more compex server side issue.
Thanks.

Last week or so, we had a storm, and devices got unplugged. Internet service was out briefly. Wireless internet came back shortly after, but my desktop and our PS4 both can't connect to the internet via ethernet, and I can't figure out why. I've done the usual stuff: power cycle, tried out other ethernet cords, etc. Comcast has said that it's not on their end, and our wireless signal is fine, so we're clearly getting signal through the modem and out through the router. My desktop is plugged into a different modem, but also won't connect to the one attached to the router. A hard reset of the modem didn't help, whether through the button or through the configuration settings. My desktop is claiming that there's no ethernet cable plugged in, though there definitely is. I'd suspect a broken port if the PS4 weren't having the same issue. I've tried a few things on the desktop, including installing the most recent drivers for the network adapter, rolling back the driver, disabling/renabling, and just deleting it and let it reinstall one on restart, and trying to reset the IP stack. I'm posting links to screenshots of some of the command prompt commands I've tried, and the results. They vary a little bit, I've gone into the registry to enable some permissions after access was denied. Any ideas you can send my way are greatly appreciated.

Hello all, I'm new at the forums, and I have an issue I'm hoping you can help me solve.

I have a cheap USB Gigaware mouse from radioshack that stopped working out of nowhere a few days ago. It may not sound strange but here's some interesting details:

I am running seven on my imac, and whenever I boot in the mac partition, the mouse works fine (same USB slot). But in windows as soon as it boots (or plug in the mouse) I get the small bubble notification saying that the computer found a new USB device (even though I've been using it for months now) and then gives me a new notification to tell me it's installed. However, the mouse does not respond to any input (no movement or clicking). After that, Windows proceeds to make the "new hardware is found" sound over and over again with 1-2 minute intervals. So I know the mouse is working, and it must be a software related issue.

I thought it might be a driver issue so I tried using the System Preparation Tool 3.14 (as directed in this guide Windows 7 Installation - Transfer to a New Computer) hoping to reset some drivers to default and that it would fix the issue, to no avail. Also I have tried doing a Repair install but an error will not allow me to do so.

So does anyone have any idea why a mouse that works fine would stop working all of a sudden?

A:My mouse no longer works on this OS. Need help identifying issue

W7 isn't designed to run on your hardware in truth.

Try swapping USB ports, and failing that then try a better mouse is all I can suggest.

No guarantees, your hardware setup isn't exactly orthodox

I have The Weather app permissions set to allow it to display the weather on the lock screen. This has been working fine for some time -- up until now.

Now it only shows alerts, not the temperature. Any idea how to fix this?

A:Windows Weather and Lock Screen -- Weather not showing

To get the weather to show on the lock screen TWO things are needed:

Give the Weather app permision to access the lock screen.Tell the lock screen what you want to see.
I think number 2 is set up by default and I think I set up number 1 myself. This was enough to make it work.

Somewhere along the line I mucked up number 2. I do remember experimenting in that area.

Man, have I got a weird one for you. First thing first, I am by no means un-tech-savvy, so feel free to use technical terms if your have an idea about this. Let me explain:

So I've had my regular Windows 7 for a long time now. It's always worked perfectly. I decided to give the Windows 8 Preview a try, so yesterday I shrunk my Win 7 partition to 327 GB and gave my new Win 8 138 GB (number not relevant other than to show they have plenty of space). All is well so far, 7 still booted fine in the meantime.
So I pop in my Win 8 DVD, boot from it, install to the empty partition, no problems.

BIOS Screen, Boot Selection, Windows 8. Messed around, works great. Alright, let's go back to Windows 7 and use some of my programs.

BIOS Screen, Boot Selection, Pick Windows 7 Ultimate (Recovered), BIOS Screen, Black Screen, BIOS Screen, "Press control and S to enter boot setup" (weird), BIOS Screen, Long wait on a black screen with a mouse pointer (never happened before this, used to be almost instant), aaaand finally logged into the desktop. Well, that's weird. A lot of the startup programs aren't loading up. And my keyboard and mouse do nothing.

My keyboard and mouse are Logitech wireless combo usb dongle. Always used them. I tried different ports, a few restarts, and even tried a different wired usb keyboard.

Well that sucks. Went into BIOS screen, and Legacy USB devices was enabled (just to check), and I also tried toggling the EHCI hand off just for kicks. Noth... Read more

A:Windows 7 input devices no longer work after 7/8 dual boot

Sounds to me like Windows 8 got confused and overwrote data in the Window 7 registry. If System Restore is not an option, then a Repair Install is what I would do. And that might not work either. Repair Installs don't work when the permissions have been pooched, and who knows what Win8 did to your Win7 registry.

I think my CPU is dying as my PC was working fine, now sound has completely stopped, reinstalling drivers hasn't helped and i tried another sound card and that didn't help.

When Windows 7 tries to fix it it says "One or more audio services isn't running"

when i try to start windows audio service i get "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start"

When i try to start the other windows audio endpoint service i get yet another message "Windows could not start the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service on Local Computer. Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable."

I left it for a few days to see if it would come back on but it hasn't. I took my PC to my local repair shop and they said i need a new CPU and that they tried everything and couldn't fix it.

Is there any hack or fix i can use until i can afford a new computer?

I just noticed today that My windows update won't run anymore. It's the red X image that lots of people are describing and when I try to turn it on it says it can't turn on because it's not running. Windows update is not in my services at all, nor is BITS. I've tried getting in command prompt and as far as it tells me, Bits is an invalid service name. wuauserv is also an invalid service name. Its like all of the sudden Windows update and the programs people recommend messing with to fix it are all gone. Windows defender is also not present on my computer anymore. I don't know why. I tried downloading it and it is telling me I already have it. I can see it in my search box but when I click on it to turn it on it says "the specified service does not exist as an installed service."

I am in the process of getting rid of a trojan dropper so I wonder if these problems could be related. I have been able to update just fine in the past.

I have my laptop with Win 8.1 set to automatically download updates and to notify me when any are available so I can see what they are before installing them. When I realized that my almost-daily Windows Defender definition updates were not showing up, I investigated and found no check for updates had occurred since August 4th. Trying a manual check, I got an error message with a code of 80244019. Nothing I found in Windows Help or on the web has been useful.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Other than installing updates, I haven't made any changes whatsoever to the laptop in months.

We used to use ZetaFax, I'm told. I'm new to the company. We no longer use ZetaFax. Since bringing in Windows Vista Business and Windows 7 Pro computers, and Windows 2008 Server, we now use Windows Fax and Scan. We use Fax Server on the server with quad port RocketModems installed.

Now, here's the problem. Some of our employees are having problems using Windows Fax and Scan. The way they use faxing is by finding the file (usually an Adobe Acrobat pdf), open it and then go to the Fax printer. This then auto faxes the document using Windows Fax and Scan.

For most of our employees, this works fine. But, suddenly for some it does not work. When I visit the ones who can't fax, I open Windows Fax and Scan and try to launch it. It does not launch. On some of the computers, the user gets a message that the format must be tif. For others, they get a message saying that they can not access to the document folder.

I have no idea what is wrong. I'd like to remove Windows Fax and Scan on these computers and try to reinstall it and see what happens. How can I do that?

A:Windows Fax and Scan no longer works

Just a though. Check and see if the people that can't use fax and scan have the proper permission in user account.

Hi,

I bought a Intuos3 tablet which required that my old wacom driver be uninstalled first. It was a real problem getting the old driver off my machine for some reason, and I finally took my PC to a specialist for help. He tried everything as advised on the Wacom forums to no avail. Finally a download called 'Wacom Uninstall' was the only thing which took the old driver off my machine.

Since then Windows XP does not work as it should. Things like IE keep freezing and just hang there, then I had problems with Outlook Express and could not get an Internet connection for a while. WMP also no longer plays sound although I checked the settings in Audio properties and all looks normal there.

I have also done a few system restores to see if I could get back to before i had a problem, but although the system restore was 'successful', the problems I inherited after the driver removal have remained, so I really don't understand whats going on here.

Uninstalling/reinstalling Windows has been suggested, but I really don't want to do this to do this as I will loose too much I cant replace.

I am hoping there may be something else I can to to mend my Windows (which was after all working just fine until I had to remove the wacom driver.

Any ideas please?

A:Windows No Longer Works Properly

I just tried uninstalling and then reinstalling AVG anti virus because of reading a suggestion of this on another thread. Wacom instructions had said to disable the anti virus so I'm thinking perhaps there might have been a conflict somehow. Just a thought.

Although the IE browser and other Windows programs are now a bit erratic, they are still up and running and so my biggest problem at the moment seems to be that my PC cannot play any sound. Have checked the settings and all seems normal to me. cant understand why the sound should have been affected though.

Any ideas?

I had some issues installing my updates initially, so I did them in small chunks in order to prevent my computer from freezing up. Finally I was ready to install service pack 1, but the installation continued to fail. After trying many things, Windows thinks that I have never installed any updates at all, and can't search for new ones. When I try, this is the error I receive:

"An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:
Code 8007370B Windows update encountered an unknown error."

It also says:

Most recent check for updates: Never
Updates were installed: Never

Which is of course not true. I'd like to try uninstalling these updates so I can try again, but I can't do that if it thinks they aren't there.

I have tried using the Update Readiness tool, which claims to be successful, but changes nothing.

I have run the update troubleshooter which claims to fix two issues, but changes nothing.

I have tried to run sfc /scannow as suggested by many people, but I receive this error:
"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I have tried stopping the Windows Update service, deleting the Software Distribution folder, and restarting the service, but it changes nothing.

I'm at my wit's end; this is a company computer and I really need to get it working again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi. I recently upgraded to Windows XP and most of my programs still work just fine, but two in specific do not.

1) WINMX - I have been using WinMX 3.53 (latest version) for several months with no problems. I have always connected with a secondary connection. The upgrade to WinXP has rendered it non-functional. I connect no problem, I get the green CONNECTED box and everything... I can also search no problem and get lots of results. But when I start the transfer, it never actually downloads anything. Each file remains "yellow" in the transfer window indicating it is trying to connect to the user... and eventually it gives up and goes red. It just doesn't download.... even with over a hundred users available!

2) DIRECTCD - Yes I know, Easy CD Creator v. 5.0 does not work in Windows XP. The update is at the Roxio website but it requires your registration and I'm afraid I "lost" my CD key... Does anyone know of any other software out there that can burn audio and data CDs? Preferably without the exchange of currency? If I do have to pay, which software is best these days? Stick with Roxio, or Nero, or what?

THANKS GUYS! I appreciate any help you can provide.

A:WinMX & DirectCD no longer works in Windows XP

For the first problem, check to see if the Windows firewall is enabled. This may be why it isn't working. However, don't disable this if you aren't behind a router of some sort or don't have another software firewall running.

For the second problem, I believe nero has a "gimped" version of Nero on their site, at the very least they have a demo. That can get you by for now. I'm not sure about free windows software, I'm a linux guy, but it's worth a shot.

Hello folks, I've been trying to upgrade 2 7-Pro x64 machines to Ultimate, using Windows Anytime Upgrade, and I get through the 1st step of my name and address most of the time, and sometimes I even get to where I put my payment information in, but then I get and error saying to close Anytime Upgrade and try again.

Once I saw a different error, saying that the selected option is no longer available.

I called the help number, and the Microsoft employee said Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade is no longer available. I can't confirm this, and it seems strange that you would still be able to select it, and enter payment information and such. He told me my only options were to buy a full-version of 7 Ultimate, and do a clean install, or buy Windows 8 Pro and clean install that.

The web site still indicates it's available: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/videos/upgrade-to-another-edition-of-windows-7-by-using-windows-anytime-upgrade.

Anyway, can anyone confirm that Windows Anytime Upgrade no longer works? I need to use bitlocker on these two systems, and don't want to do clean installs. Thanks!

Sorry about how long this is but I don't want you to miss any details that could've caused this issue.

Alright, so, I have a Sceptre X20WG Naga 20.1" monitor on a DVI connection with my EVGA GTX460 card. I was using it yesterday while studying for finals and decided to hook up my 37" Westinghouse TV via VGA connection, using a VGA-to-DVI converter to plug into the graphics card, as the card only has dual-DVI and mini-HDMI outputs. It was working grand as a second screen, no issue at all. Now, today, I turned on my computer and my Sceptre Monitor wasn't outputting any images at all, it just said no signal detected and then went to sleep, though my computer was still on. So I turned on the TV out of curiosity and found that the TV was now the main screen, still with the VGA connection, and I hadn't unplugged anything since yesterday. So I logged in and right-clicked on the desktop, went to screen resolution, and here it says that the TV is the only screen detected, even after hitting detect. So I unplugged the VGA from to TV and plugged it into the Sceptre Monitor. Turned on the computer and the monitor worked like a charm on the VGA cable. I also plugged the DVI cable that I was using for the monitor into the TV and that worked like a champ too. The only reason this is bugging me is because I won't always be using the TV as a main display because it's kinda of a pain to sit close to a screen that big. So I am currently on this forum while my monitor is using the VGA... Read more

A:DVI Port no longer works, AND Windows won't detect monitor with DVI

MustangFX93 welcome to the Seven Forums.

As you discovered only the first DVI port (DVI-I, analogue and digital) on the card will work with the DVI-VGA adapter and the second being DVI only (DVI-D, digital only). It also makes it that no matter what you do the first port is considered the primary port by the video card, with the only way around it is to try and modify the bios of the video card to change which it thinks is the primary port (not recommended); there is nothing you can do from within Windows to change this.

About the only thing you can do is from within Windows set the monitor as the primary display and then use the Windows key + P to set it how you want it (computer only, or extended displays for example).

Like many on here I had the Good redirect problem and after a couple days I can access anything after booting into Windows. The screen appears normal, but no applications are running and I cant access the internet, or even click anything.

I have gone into safemode, but no anti-virus programs will run. I have also tried to restore to an earlier time, but it restricts me from starting the process. I'm currently on a friends laptop so I don't have much time, and am limited in what I can say. If you have any suggestions it would be much appreciated. I will check back whenever I can get on. Thanks.

Hello

Yesterday, I had a Windows 8.1 update and today the start button has no right-click functionality. Also, all of the desktop shortcuts that were specific to my user account became hidden. I set the folders to show hidden and now they are back, but semi-transparent. What has happened here?

I really don't want to do a reinstall, because I only did that a month or so ago and had a right game installing all of the applications I use. I tried to create another user account, but it won't let me use the same email address...bit of a problem as that email address is linked to my MS Office 2013 purchase and updates.

Can someone please advise on the best course of action? I know, I know...switch to a Mac. Trouble is, I need some Windows-only products and hate using parallels.

I get a "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close" error message whenever I try to launch an .mp3 file.

It works fine with video files, however.

This may have been my fault because as Service Pack was installing itself, my Spybot Registry thing kept alerting me about changes to the Registry. I denied the first change before realizing I should probably accept them all. Which is what I did with subsequent Registry alerts.

How can I fix this problem?

For a reason I don't know, copy and paste no longer works in Windows Explorer.

To be clear, here's the scenario:
I open a folder in Windows Explorer
I click Edit> Select All
I click Edit> Copy
I close that window or leave it open; it doesn't matter.
I open another window/folder in Windows Explorer and click Edit> Paste.
Nothing happens; it's just as though I didn't click anything at all--not even a hiccup.

On my laptop I initially had Windows 7, and within Windows 7 I had a Linux virtual machine (Oracle VirtualBox). Windows 7 then got upgraded to Windows 10, and now VirtualBox (which was working perfectly prior to the upgrade) now does not work.

When I attempt to start up the Linux virtual machine, it causes a blue screen, and I am told my laptop has encountered a problem and needs to restart. Then that's what happens and it happens every time. I have consulted people on the VirtualBox forums and
they tell me it's a Windows 10 problem rather than a VirtualBox problem.

I'm running W7 SP1 on a Dell Studio XPS. A bit over a month ago my HD went belly up and I ended up doing a System Restore to a new drive. All appeared to go well and have been using the system with no apparent problem. A couple days ago, it dawned on me that I hadn't seen ant recent Windows Updates. When I checked I found that I was receiving "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running...."

I have tried various things and did get it the point where Windows update history showed NEVER and last update showed NEVER rather than "the service not running" message, but that has again reverted to the "service not running" state.

I downloaded SURT and attempted to run it, but it errors out with: Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247

I've attached screen shot, CBS log and Farbar Scan. If I've missed something, please let me know.

Several days ago, I suffered two blue screen of death system failures due to 3D sound on a video game.

However, what I noticed is that MPEG/MPG files, which I use Media Player 6.4 ("classic" as it's known) to open them, the seek bar is not functioning. Where once it would scroll over a white surface, it's now stuck at the beginning, and the white bar is gray. It still does move with the video, leaving a white bar in its path, but if I try to adjust it, it snaps back to the beginning, with the video as well.

This only affects MPEGs. AVI's still play normally. This only affects MPEGs in Media Player 6.4. I can still play MPEG's normally with the most recent Media Player, and with other video playing applications.

Why is it only affecting 6.4, the one I use most?

A:Windows Media Player 6.4 seek bar no longer works for MPGs only

Seek issues are typically file related, not player related, but hey, anything is possible. Have you tried reinstalling MPC or switching to MPC Home Theater? If it is tied to just the one player, it is likely a codec issue.

Hi,
I have Dell E2014T monitor attached to Intel NUC. Originally, the base install was Windows 7 64-bit, but due to the automatic updates it was updated to Windows 10. Obviously, it is not possible to revert operating system to Windows 7.
Nevertheless, everything worked correctly until recently, when new updates from Microsoft were automatically installed in Windows 10. Monitor works correctly, but the "click" on the touch screen does not work. Simply saying - I can move windows but cannot press any buttons.
For 100% it is not hardware fault - when attaching monitor to older laptop with Windows 8 both monitor and touch screen works properly.
I learned on the other threads that Dell states that Windows 10 is "not supported" for this monitor and recommends revert to Windows 7.
The question is - is how it can be? As Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7, and Windows 8/8.1 will be no longer supported in a year and 3 months from now, how it can be that Dell has not released any driver for MS Windows 10?
Does it mean that Dell is dropping now all users who bought this monitor?
I can understand that Dell may be dropping old and unsupported operating systems but in this case Microsoft forces all users to migrate to Windows 10, so users have no other choice than to migrate.
Can anyone in Dell take a look at this issue and release new driver for Windows 10?

Hello. I am using Windows 10 Professional edition. Following some random Windows Update a few months ago, my default Windows 10 weather app (the one that can be pinned to the start menu) displays the temperature properly and updates regularly, however, if I click to open it, it opens blank....basically, the window is just the blue background with the little icon of the sun in the center.

This app used to work 100% before.

Lastly, I remember my calendar app not opening at all when Windows 10 was fresh. It would immediately close upon opening the calendar app. However, following some random Windows Update, the calendar app started working properly.

I "upgraded" to Windows 10 from 8.1, but I did a FULL install and chose to "save nothing" from 8.1, so it is about as legit as it can get to being a full installation and not an upgrade.

PS, it doesn't seem to matter if I enable to disable background data for the Weather app in privacy settings. I have tried it out both ways, and either way, on or off, the live tile for the weather app still updates, but opens blank and won't show me the large view when I click on it.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I don't use any other apps, I have not downloaded any other apps from the app store, and I have deleted some of the apps that came with Windows 10. I prefer to use my web browser for most things. I'm old school!

I realize this is a forum for Windows 7, but I don't know where else to ask this question lol.

Earlier I made a thread about my mom's computer being unable to reinstall Windows 7 after a factory reset. I think I've found a possible fix for this, but I'm not entirely sure.

I'm currently in the process of installing Windows 10 on my own computer via the Windows Creation Tool, and I noticed that it gave me the option to not only install W10 on my own computer, but another's through a Flash Drive as well.

So my question: after I've installed Windows 10 on my own computer, would it be possible to also put a copy onto my flash drive to install Windows 10 on my mom's computer as well? And if so, can I bypass the product key requirement to get to the desktop? I've got some code that I used to grab my own product key in order to install Windows 10 for myself, which I can also use to retrieve my mom's product key if I can get to her desktop to open Notepad.

I've never booted a computer via flash drive, so I don't know whether or not I can do this. I don't have her product key, and I can only get it if I can access her desktop (unless there's another way, because the product key on the back of her laptop is too faded to read).

Thanks in advance!

A:Installing Windows 10 on Multiple Devices?

Once you've made an install flash drive (or DVD or iso) from the Microsoft site, you can use it to upgrade any number of qualifying computers (genuine activated Windows 7 SP1) to Windows 10 without needing a serial. It must be the correct edition ie Windows 7 Home Premium needs a Windows 10 Home flash drive. A sneaky upgrade attempt from Home to Pro will appear to work, but won't activate (you will prob be nagged to buy the correct serial sometime in the future).

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

re : booting from flash - I found that the upgrade didn't work in that scenario. I had to run setup.exe from within Windows 7. If a clean install is your goal, once Windows 10 is installed, you can boot from the install media (flash, DVD etc) and install again, deleting all partitions. You don't need a serial for this, because MS 'remembers' the hardware and activates it accordingly. If you do this, all data and apps are deleted.

Edit - if your mom's computer isn't actually running, you won't be able to upgrade it to W10 for free.

A:Installed most recent Windows update; display no longer works except in safe mode

Hi Rachel and welcome to TSF

You didn't say, but I'm assuming that after the uninstalls the problem is still there.

Try doing a system restore to a time before the updates.

If you can boot in the safe mode and get video, then it must be something that is booting up in regular mode that is messing up the video. Before doing a re-install, look in the msconfig and see if something was installed there that might be the culprit. Under the start tab, the check boxes will let you selectively disable applications that install during normal boot. See if one of them is problematic. What each of those items do can be seen here:

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Do you have any red or yellow marks in the Device Manager? That almost always means a device driver problem.

If you have to resort to a re-install of XP, I would suggest a Repair Install which will leave your normal applications and data in tact. Guidance for that can be seen here:

Hi everybody,

Everytime I plug in an usb device, especially devices that use much resources like external Hard Drive or Digital TV-Card, usually I have to try 2,3 times until Windows recognize it, with some luck it can sometimes works on the first try. But even after successfully recognize my device, every 15-30 Minutes Windows notifies me that my device is unpluged and a few second later it is "automatically" pluged again. This is extremely annoying , image when you are copying data from the external Hard Drive or watching movies from the TV-Card and this thing happens --> have to start all over again

At first, I thought it was because of lacking power for the usb-ports, so I bought a USB-Hub with dedicated power supply, but it seemed to be even worse, now my usb-mouse keep disconnecting all the time if I plug it in the USB-Hub (with power turn on), but it works normally if I plug it in the PC USB-Ports (not through the USB-Hub)

I'm really confused, should it be a hardware problem, or even a software issue (windows)

Thanks so much if anyone can help me

Hi, I very much want to know the answer to this problem. My setup is simple. I am working with my Mobo's onboard sound card (Mobo is Asus M3A32-MVP Wi-Fi) and here's the thing. I see multiple devices in both Vista and Seven (have a dual boot) - I see the front headphone jack, the SPDIF, the rear audio port (it's 5.1 surround) and also an HDMI. I've just recently bought two bluetooth headphones and I have paired them and see them in the audio devices panel too.

Now this is what I want to do. I want to hear the audio on all the devices simultaneously. If I turn on the audio system (connected to the SPDIF) then I should hear the audio there. If I connect multiple Bluetooth headphones, I should hear the audio from my comp on any and all of them.

So, why can't I do this? Apparently this was the default behaviour for Windows in XP. That is, any audio played was available on all connected devices. Now, here in Vista and Seven we have a major downgrade in that we have to select a SINGLE audio output device as the "default" device and when a device is selected as such, the audio stream is SOLELY passed into it. THIS IS SO VERY WRONG! It is so illogical to do something like this in today's world of changing and evolving multi-media environments. I mean, what if my Mom wants to hear my music from the kitchen at the same time that I'm listening to it as I work on my desktop. She should be able to simply plugin and start listening to what I'm hearing! This is RIDICULOUS!

Hello,

I run a Windows 2000 web server. As of a day or so ago I started receiving calls from customers running Windows 7 that they cannot log into secure directories on their websites (on my Windows 2000 server). I assume this has to do with a recent update to Windows 7. Does anyone out there have any idea what happened and how I can fix it on the server end or what I can tell my customers so they can fix it on the Windows 7 end? Thank you. This happened once before about a year ago. The problem eventually fixed itself but I don't want to rely on that happening if it is something I can fix.

Hello,

Check the event logs of both the Server and clients. Have you tried rebooting the Server? Do you have a working (tested) backup solution?

What protocol are they using? Is it http via a website, FTP, WebDAV, or something else? I'm guessing that it's HTTP and you're using integrated Windows authentication. If this is the case, change it to basic authentication and it shouldn't matter which OS they're using.--Andrew LeonardBL Technical ServicesBaltimore IT Support

I've got about 40 Senor Point of Sale tablets running Windows 7. They work just fine, but are failing to take Windows Update for Service Pack 1 (KB97632). The POS software is soon going to need this update in order for it to continue working.

I've deleted the Windows Update cache (SoftwareDistribution >> SoftwareDistribution.old) and nothing changed.

I've downloaded the update .exe and after it ran, nothing changed.

Check for Windows Updates only shows the SP1 update when I click to search online for updates, for what it's worth.

After the update has failed, I get error code 800736b3.

Apparently the billion and two solutions other people have aren't solutions for me.

Please help me!

Thanks in advance.

I consider myself an advanced user, but this one I've never seen, nor can I find info out for...

I haven't been able to plug a video camera or external hard drive into my computer via FireWire. I then tried a different cable, nothing. I then tried a different device and cable, nothing. I then tried a different computer with two devices, nothing.

My USB2.0 works fine with each device and computer. I also took the new computer into CompUSA and they tried their firewire device and all worked. I bought a new firewire cable, but I have the same luck with each device.

How can 2 external hardrives, and one sony camera not work, after working for a year. What happened? What do I need to do?

Hi.

I know there are several freeware and shareware FTP server software out there.

Do you know of any that would work on Windows 2000/2003 server and Linux Fedora ?

Of course, you would run distinct compilations, but I hope the UI and operation would be the same.

Thnx

p.s. the icing on the cake would be if they also allow synchronization (mirroring) between the servers. For this last feature I wouldn't mind buying the software.

A:FTP Server that works on Windows and Linux

CrossFTP?

Mind you, synchronising files between servers will be tricky, since file permissions in Windows and unix are very different. Any kind of fine-grained permissions systems will not work. You would probably have to sync files, then run a script to fix all perms.

A very minor issue but starting about 4 or 5 days ago I noticed when I click on Cortana and it brings up the useful info .ie. news headlines, weather that the weather location at the top has changed from showing as 'Havering' my UK borough to a generic post code RM3 9. RM3 is still my location but I just thought it strange it has lost its ability to display Havering or Romford. It's not PC specific as we looked at our other family PC and this is doing the same. Just wondered if others are noticing the same. Not a major thing at all, more of an aesthetic thing if anything. I suppose one could argue it is being even more pinpoint / accurate by narrowing down the post code as much it has.

I suspect due to a bunch of win7 patches, I can no longer see XP or Mac pc's on my home network, nor can I see the memory card of a Canon Pixma printer/scanner.

In file manager (win explorer), if I click the Network icon of the left panel, I will see the Canon printer listed under Multifunction devices, and also under Scanners and Printers.

But the (previously visible) Mac computer and the memory card slot of the printer is not visible (and yes, I have a memory card in there, trying to grab files from it).

Any thoughts on where I should check? Again, I think this problem started after doing a bunch of Windows Updates.

A:no longer see non win7 pcs, devices

BTW, I have (re)installed the latest Canon drivers. No change. And I can print to the printer, which is configured for tcp/ip, not USB.

Another symptom that may be relevant is that while I can VPN to my office, I can no longer remote desktop to my office PC.

I was installing some programs for my ipod touch and after installing something called libUSB, both my USB mouse and USB Receiver for my Logitech LX710 Wireless keyboard just turned off and stopped working. I am using Windows 7, and XP on the other partition.

How do I fix this when I cannot even use my keyboard or mouse?

A:USB Devices No Longer Work

Hi LiquidDragon.
First thing I would try to do would be to boot into safe mode.
If that doesn't work (i.e. you mouse and keyboard still are not working), then get out your installation DVD (I would use XP for this is I were you given that Win7 is not released yet) and boot from it. You should have the option to do a system restore to a restore point previous to the installation of libUSB.
Sorry if this is obvious to you but you didn't say if you had given that a go. :)
good luck.

Problem:
Here is the chain events that led to the problem. First, I have 2 different USB SAN disks and system always detected them when conn to front of the tower. I also had a USB Logitech web-camera and a USB Epson CX4600 all working fine.

The CX4600 had a known problem with the ink-cartridges, sw said it was low or empty where it still have enough ink remaining. I received a new CX4800. I then uninstalled all Epson sw, rebooted, and connected the CX4800. Inserted the new Epson CD sw that contained drivers & sw, but it did not detect the CX4800. Tried de/re-attaching the USB cable at the printer end, system did not detect any new devices. I also tried to conn the USB printer to 2 other different USB ports, same problem.

I then tried to attach my SAN disks, still system did not detect any new devices. I detached all USB devices and only tried the SAN Disks, still problem. It seems Plug n Play does not work or got disabled.

I checked Device Manager and it shows the following with no red/yellow:
Universal Serial Bus Controllers
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub
- VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
- VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

I then removed all 4 items above by clicking on it and choosing Uninstall. I reboot, it detects them but does not detect the SAN disk still attached. I tried the web-camera dev... Read more

A:USB devices no longer detected, why?

Hi apatec

Quick fix try:
1) Unplug all USB peripherals (excepting any USB mice or keyboards)
2) Reboot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key as the system powers up)
3) Uninstall all Epson-related software from Add-Remove Programs in Control Panel.
4) Uninstall the USB controllers in Device Manager.
5) Run a System Restore, choosing a restore date from before the 4600 was uninstalled.
6) If prompted to reboot - reboot into Safe Mode again.
7) Once again, remove any Epson software found in Add-Remove Programs.
8) Double-check that any Epson presence is gone in the Printers folder.
9) Double-check that any Epson presence is gone from Device Manager (make sure the scanner is gone, too)
10) Reboot.
11) Try connecting just one SanDisk key. If it does not detect, try another, and try the different ports.
12) If the keys detect OK, download a recent driver for the CX4800 and use that to install. Pay extremely close attention to the instructions (Read them before installing!) -- USB multifunctions are very particular about the order in which the drivers are installed. Often, the printer must be disconnected at the start of the install, and only plugged in to a USB port when prompted by the installation program. There is sometimes a separate install for the scanning function.

Since the controllers are being detected and installed by Windows XP, I'd expect that your motherboard's Bios Settings have the controllers set to "Enabled" -- but you could ent... Read more

Hi everyone!

I've got a strange problem.

IE seemingly randomly chooses whether it wants to load websites. I sometimes have to open several tabs before I get one that works. For example, if I want to right-click and open a link in a new window, I may have to try it several times before the page actually loads. Otherwise, I'll just have tab that appears to be seeking the website address, but just stalls there.

Firefox works perfectly so it isn't a connection issue.

So this is a two in one problem. I know most people tend to have this issue but I couldn't find a fix that would work for me.

Basically, I had a monitor for a while that had built in speakers. It broke. So I bought one that didn't and just used my Urbanears headphones that I used to use for my phone. Audio worked fine forever, mic worked fine as well. I don't have a webcam but I was able to receive video calls too. Then I updated Skype and now Skype cannot recognize my sound card, it says I have no microphone installed either.

I check my system's audio devices and when the headphones are plugged into the right jack on the front of my tower, the sound works. Unplug it and put it in the left, then the sound is gone but the mic registers as being plugged in. This never used to happen. I'm not sure what happened but I really need to find a fix to it.

Can anyone help?

A:no longer get prompt screen fo USb devices

The behavior may occur if you previously cancelled the detection of a USB device that you connected to a USB port.

To resolve this issue, connect the USB device, use the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel to detect devices. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add New Hardware.
3. Click Next, and then click Next again.
4. In the list of found devices, click on the reader, and then click Next.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the detection process.

Good luck.

Then, usually, but i dont want to test it, the computer will reboot successfully until i cut it completely off and come back the next day. It boots into safe mode just fine everytime.
Ive tried reseating all hardware, disabling all non microsoft services, installing all new drivers for everything and I found one problem were the molex connecter for power was disconnected from one of the video cards, but this did not actually fix the issue. Ive also tried disconnecting different peripherals and such but that didnt work either, once i gave up on trying some things and put everything back to normal, 3 reboots later it worked again so i decided to post here and ask for help.

Thanks a lot guys. (I hope its not the Power Supply, saving that for last)
UPDATE: I removed one of the graphics cards and everything works fine now, is this a power problem?

hi xtimymx,

Its unlikely to be a powersupply fault but it may be a power problem on the Graphics Card itself. how long you had the card? would try an RMA on it just incase there is a fualt there.

I have run all the diagnostics that came with the computer and all is okay. I just don't want to pay Dell to tell me what's wrong when they won't guarantee the fix.

I have a Western Digital MyBook (external drive that connects via Firewire) and an iPhone. Up until about a day or so ago, both were working just fine. I could see both devices in explorer and connect to them without any problems.

Now, I'm no longer able to see them in Explorer. My PC still "sees" the devices on some level because the iPhone will connect and sync with iTunes. (I just can't get to the iPhone as an USB drive from explorer.)

The HD is still listed in the device manager. However it is listed as "This device is not configured correctly." I've tried uninstalling, disabling, reinstalling drivers, different ports and have had no luck getting my machine to see either device. I've rebooted with them plugged in/unplugged, drivers/no drivers, and even tried different ports. I even tried system restore.

I've also verified that there is nothing wrong with the HD or the iPhone. Both connect flawlessly on my husband's Vista (non 64bit of course) machine. I also have thumb drive that connects (and shows up in explorer with no problems).

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

Hi there
thank goodness --for the moment you can get the benefits of W8 with a DESKTOP presented after boot (although metro is there too of course) --but it starts in the desktop. The trick is to use W2012 SERVER !!!.

Read the remark on the installation choice if you are goung to try it -.

Note using a server as a desktop OS is a bit fiddly to configure --worthwhile once you've done it --but remember SOME of your programs might not work because you are on a server. Most "Normal" ones will. Acrinis backup won't --it wants the server version --but just use the stand alone bootable version !!

For screenshots I've got them in this thread over at W7 forums --I installed it as a VM on W7 -- didn't want TWO "Preview" os'es running on top of each other. !!

You can download W2012 server --doesn't need any keys --expiry same as W8 Release preview.

Here's the link second post in the thread.

note ist time I tried it failed --hence the title of the thread !!!!! but after a bit of fiddling it's fine and install time around 10 mins on a decent laptop (8GB intel I5 Sony VAIO)..

I have attached the image plz help me out ....

want to make communicate all the clients of "Server B" with "Server A".....

A:Multiple Windows Server 2008 R2

Make sure Routing is enabled on Server B - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...(v=ws.10).aspx

Then if still not working (I believe it should), try adding the static route on Server B (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/...(v=ws.10).aspx):

Command is:

Code:
route add destination mask subnetmask gateway metric costmetric if interface
route add -p ServerA-IP-towards-Internal-A-Network mask Internal-A-subnetmask ServerB-IP-towards-Internal-A-Network

Just an example would be, assuming IPs are set like this for your network
route add -p 172.20.0.1 mask 255.255.0.0 172.20.0.254

On my laptop I can connect via ethernet, however I cannot connect via wifi. Wireless works for my phone so it looks my laptop is messed up somewhere. I just did a full windows 8 update and restart and it changed nothing.

A:Ethernet connection works, Wireless does not. Wireless works for other devices.

Depending on the computer, there are two things I'd suggest you check on:

1.  Some computers (like my told Toshiba), has a slide switch on it, that physically turns off the Wi-Fi.
2.  My newer computer has a key combo that does that.  In this case Fn+F12.

Best of luck.

Hi, For what seems like for ever, in various Windows OS, I have always used a double click on a folder using the left hand mouse button. However, for some reason, this action is no longer working. To open a folder I have to right click on it and manually select 'open' from the drop down menu. This does not apply to desk top icons----they still respond to left clicking. In addition I now find that I am unable to create a 'New Folder' except when I am inside another folder. For example if I wanted to create a folder titled '2 reasons to like Windows 10', I would not be able to do so unless I opened any other folder created the new one and then did a 'cut & paste' on the new one. Now I know that what I have here are 2 separate issues, but they both appeared at round about the same time, following a Win 10 update. Has anyone else had these or similar problems of late? I would appear to me that some settings have been changed, but where to go to fix them and how to do it is past my knowledge base. For information I do get an error message when I try to open a file with a left click...please see attached. It is to do with file associations, but again where di I look to sort it.Regards

A few months ago my Western Digital USB drive stopped working on my Windows Vista Desktop. It runs Windows Vista Home Edition SP2 32 bit. All of my other USB devices work. The WD drive worked one day and stopped working the next. I did not improperly disconnect it. I have tried it in all of the ports with no luck. The drive is fine because it works on other computers.

In device manager, it is highlighted as not working properly. The error on it says it is not working because windows can't load the driver, code 31. I have tried updating the driver, but it tells me that it can't update because I am already using the most recent driver. I have tried pulling the original driver off the drive itself and from WD's website.

A:Solved: External usb devices no longer working with vista

Try the free USBDeview. No installation required.

It will list all USB devices currently connected to your computer, as well as all USB devices that you previously used. You'll see your WD USB drive in the list. Uninstall it with the program so Windows can redetect the device. You'll see the options by right-clicking on your device in the list.

Hello. It seems I've gotten myself into hot water again somehow with no idea how to fix it after surfing for answers for a while now. It's just too confusing for me to sort out all of the possible problems/solutions/situations/applicable possibilities...

In short, due possibly to an incompatible game I was trying to play, my computer display went wonky. Now when I look at the display adaptor it lists VGA and not my GeForce card. As an example, I'm pasting my dxdiag from a couple of weeks ago (which shows my card) and my current dxdiag which shows the vga adaptor.

I forgot to mention and am editing to say that there is a new bios message that flashes upon restarting computer but it is SO FAST I can't read a single word. I do know that prior to this evening no messages flashed upon rebooting.

I'm either too tired or too ignorant to figure out what happened or how to fix it.

Any assistance would be appreciated!

System:
Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6000); HP Pavillion m9100t; Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3 GHz; 2.47 GB Ram; 32-bit OS; NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT; DirectX 10

Thanks~

Today water spilt on top of my case and I believe it got inside of the case. After cleaning up the mess, I tried to start my computer. It started fine so I had a sigh of relief. When I tried to connect to a web page, it would not load. It would say network took too long to respond. I can still connect to my router page. The network icon in my tray (the 2 computers) look fine. I then tried to move the computer to my router and connect it with a different cable, same issue. I tried to directly connect the modem to the computer and it said limited or no connectivity.

I thought the on-board LAN got fried from the water, so I went out and bought a lan card for a PCI slot. I have the same issues with this.

Any idea what is causing this? Is this a motherboard short? Do I need a new motherboard entirely?

I'm just really confused as to how it still starts up if it is a short and why I can still access the router page. I hope someone can help me, thanks a lot!
