Send To Context Menu - Remove or Restore Default Items

Hi All,

Previous PC was an XP and we had a shortcut within the Send To context menu called "Mail To" which when clicked on a file would open a new email with the file attached and with the default email (as done from within Outlook), not the crappy text "mail recipient" one that is standard in the Send To context menu.

The target string in the shortcut was
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\OUTLOOK.EXE" /c ipm.note

When trying to set up the same shortcut in Win 7 using the same string (but with Office14) we get an error which states. "The command line argument is invalid. Verify the switch you are using."
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE" /c ipm.note

If I navigate to the SendTo folder and double click the shortcut, it works. It opens up a new email as if I click New E-mail from within Outlook. But when selecting via the context menu, it fails everytime.

What can we do to fix this? We have to email a lot of files manually and opening a new email then attaching(or even drag/drop takes a lot of extra time.

Thanks for any advice.

A:"Mail to" shortcut in Send To context menu fails command line argument

Hello StuckatWork, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that Microsoft Outlook is set as the default email client.

Are you able to select the files you want to attach and click on the E-mail command bar button for this to work that way instead?

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

Virus scan didn't find alerts of any kind

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Hi @all,

I'd like to have shortcuts (not copies) of things that are selected in Windows Explorer sent to a folder in the SendTo menu. This way, I'd like to add the zillions of portable programs that I have to a new Windows installation's start menu. In other words, I'd need a "Send shortcut to Start Menu" function (but not "Pin to Start Menu").

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks for any ideas!

Good day all.

I recently restarted my computer only to be met with an empty desktop.

Also, My Start Menu is empty. I can't locate any of programs or documents.a Right clicking and going to windows explorer, I could only view : "My Computer", "Windows (C); and when I click on them, they contain few irrelevant files.

In other words I can't find my personal saved documents, "my document" folder , recycle bin and all other programs.

My wifi still works so the only thing I can do on my system is browse on the internet.

However, I can open a microsoft office file, PDF files, if I download it directly from my email or from an external drive.

I can save files on my new blank desktop.

I presume this is a virus attack.

Can anyone be kind enough to advise me on what to do?

AFTER FOLLOWING SOME ADVICE I AM BEGINNING TO GET SOME OF MY FILES BACK BUT MY START PROGRAM FOLDERS ARE ALL EMPTY. For example; when i click the microsoft office folder, it is empty.

HOW CAN I GET RID OF THIS VIRUS PLEASE?

A:Desktop erased. Can't Locate "My Documents" folder and "Start Menu" folders

Your files and folders may have been hidden by the virus, go to folder options and 'show hidden files and folder' to see if they actually are hidden. If they are, you can use Grindler's UnHide tool to 'unhide' all of your files and folders. As for the virus, move this thread to the virus and other malware removal forum in order for it to be noticed by an authorised malware removal member.
Good luck!

There appears to be no open thread on this issue...disappearing context menu "new/textdocument" option.

After trying several alternate text editor demos I found that my registry .txt entry was empty except for the (default) line item...I replaced the entry with an expanded entry found elsewhere on this forum which called for notepad.exe and included ItemName and NullFile etc.

After rebooting and checking my program associations to verify that my new editor, EditPlus, was the default, I found that the "new/text document" option appears and works in all the usual places including the desktop...

But there must be more to the story... Notepad still appears in the ItemName entry. Is this just a default reg entry, with the actual default program assignments appearing elsewhere?

BTW, as an old poster suggested elsewhere X-Setup has been de-commissioned but is still available on MajorGeeks. It has some editing capability but wouldn't add a new TXT item because "it already existed" (already registered).

Hello Brink,

Instead of having shortcuts on my desktop, could I use a similar trick to add a "shortcut" Cascading Desktop Context Menu in Windows 8.1, under of which I can have all my shortcuts to applications or files?

I have a file named registry.vbs with which I open directly a key in the registry and I would like to have it in my desktop context menu as a shortcut.
I tried to put it in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\background\shell but it does not open as it is not an exe file.

Thanks in advance.

A:add a "shortcut" Cascading Desktop Context Menu

Hello Entropy,

A .vbs file would use a bit of a different registry entry. Here's an example I use from the tutorial below for this. You can substitute with the name of your file and it's location instead.

Restore Point - Add "Create Restore Point" to Context Menu in Windows - Windows 7 Help Forums
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\Create Restore Point\command]
@="WScript C:\\Windows\\CreateRP-Success_Message.vbs"

Found out today that "send to CD" entry in the Explorer context menu is missing. How can i recreate it?

thanks

A:"send to cd" missing from context menu

You can try this:
Copy the following into a .reg file and double click.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Send To]
@="{7BA4C740-9E81-11CF-99D3-00AA004AE837}"

Or you can try Restore the Right Click
To use the VBS Files:
Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Disclaimer: These registry edits and script files are presented "as is". Every effort has been made to ensure the files work as stated. I assume no responsibility for your use of these files.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

After privacy protection installed itself I no longer have a desktop. The task bar is still on the screen as well as the start menu. But when I click on the start menu there is nothing on it. The only programs that are running are " privacy protection", "windows security center", and "XP anti-virus 2012". All three of these are running completely by themselves and I never installed or downloaded any of them. I cannot get on the internet or do anything with my computer. I know that privacy protection and XP anti-virus 2012 are fake virus protection but when my computer was still somewhat functional, these programs did not allow me to run anything which made it hard to fight it off. Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!

XP Home (installed SP2 recently, which MIGHT have something to do with this?).

Just saved two word docs and a bmp file, all separately. All three times I saw that a new location has been added to the Save As drop-down menu. It didn't open to My Documents folder but was in the general folder list of the whole computer. The location was called "FTP File Locations." It's never appeared on the Save As menu before. This made me think of the file/print sharing control, which is now located in the Windows Firewall, but I don't use that Firewall, I turned it off to use Norton. What was FTP Locations? And is there any way to disable file/print sharing without using the Windows Firewall? (These may be the same thing, I don't know.) Also, in Network Connections, I thought I'd find file/print sharing control there, but now XP wants me to run a whole Network Wizard thing..I'm afraid I'll somehow set up a network instead! or enable all kinds of things..I don't want to create a disaster here.

(My son installed an FTP program months ago for work he was doing, but the program was removed. I just searched for it, it's definitely gone.)

This is a stand-alone, non-networked home computer.

P.S. I saved another Word doc and now it's back to opening to My Documents folder as usual..now I can't find the FTP Locations anywhere.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

I have Windows 7 Home Pro installed on my laptop, and I'm one of those people that likes to keep my Start Menu folder OCD-tidy.

In W7 (as I believe it was in Vista) there are two folders that handle the program shortcuts for the Start Menu. There's a user-specific one (for programs only that user can use) and the all-users one (for programs everyone can use).

C:\Users\Joe\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
and
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I'm the only user on my laptop, so I'd like to just consolidate these two folders into one to make it easier for me to sort and keep track of. Is there any reason not to just drag-and-drop stuff from one to the other? Is there one that I should use in preference to the other (should I keep everything in the "user" folder or the "all-users" folder?

I'm pretty sure I just did this without any problem in Vista, but I wanted to make sure so I don't mess anything up as I'm new to W7.

Thanks,
Joe

"Green Box" of CPU usage in it.

Many times while surfing on da net and opening some web sites, all of a sudden, I see,
a green square BOX in the lower right corner of the screen showing CPU usage and
filling the box with green color in it,...
and it clogs and blocks the whole activities
and can not even get out of it, or can close any of the application.

What is that? Why it does that?

It means low memory? Low space? or What?

What should be done to avoid it? What should we do when it comes?

All advices needed, please.

Thanks.

Hello
Ive managed to change all the icons on my system to custom ones apart from devices and printers and recorded tv on the right of the start menu.(the ones that appear over your user picture when you hover over them) Ive searched everywhere for their location in the registry but cant find them anywhere.(spent 3 hrs today searching the reg for them)
Please does anyone know the keys for these 2 items.Ill be suprised if no-one on here has a list of them all somewhere

Thankyou

A:change start menu icons "devices and printers" and "recorded tv"

Hello Danny,

The default icon for Devices and Printers is located at the registry locations below. This will also change the icon in all other locatations as well. For example in the Control Panel.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A8A91A66-3A7D-4424-8D24-04E180695C7A}\DefaultIcon

I have not found the Recorded TV one yet though.

I have a W7 32bit laptop and I do not have MS Office installed. I have been using Hotmail until a couple weeks ago when I was "converted" to outlook.com email - which I like OK. When I'm using a browser - IE9 in this case - and when I click on "send link as" or "send page as", it launches Windows Live Mail and puts me in a WLM output email. I would instead like it to launch me into outlook.com and an outlook.com output email. How can I do this - or can't it be done at all?

If I've posted to the wrong board plz let me know which board to post it to.

Open I don't think so, Merge sounds like it is added by a 3rd party program, and likely can be removed. Have a look at ShellMenuvVew and ShellExView from NirSoft. You can remove entries with both. But Open will not be listed, and I have seen no way to remove it. A Guy

I'm using Excel 2007 and when I right-click on a cell or row, the "cut" and "copy" options are greyed out. I can still work using the toolbar menus and icons, or the shortcut keys, so it's not a big problem, but I'm not comfortable with the context menu not working properly.

This happens in all workbooks, including brand new ones. I've looked through the Excel Options but can't find anything.

Do you or anyone else willing to help me, know which registry key I would have to manually delete in order to remove the "Move To" and "Copy To" options from my context-menu?

Please help me solve the problems with my registry. I'm using Windows XP Pro (64-bit Edition). The problems started when I tried opening windows by clicking on folders & files, which are listed on my Start Menu:

Whenever I double-click (or right-click on any folders listed on my Start Menu, and then select "Open" or "Explore") to open files listed on the menu, the "Move To" & "Copy To" windows pop-up.

The "Move To" & "Copy To" windows won't go away, unless I click on "OK" or "Cancel". And now that I have the lastest stable-release of WinRAR installed on my XP, the "Move To" and "Copy To" options aren't listed on my context-menu, anymore. However, I can't open any of the folders I want to access via my Start Menu because my registry is still setup to make the "Move To" and "Copy To" windows appear. And now when I click on "OK" or "Cancel" on each of those windows: none of the folders I wanted to open appear.

The previous owner of my PC configured the registry to make the start-menu & context-menu include the "Move To" & "Copy To" options. So whenever I click on an option in the start m... Read more

Hi. Start menu -> I can only see shut down, or sleep, depending on how it's configured, but to access other power options I have to click on the small white arrow to the right of the power button.

So if the default setting of the big button is shutdown then it's a hassle to choose sleep because I have to click on the oh so small button arrow thing.

There's loads of room at the bottom right of my start menu so please tell me how to have a shutdown button AND a sleep button, because I frequently use both functions and don't want to have to choose only one for quick access. Cheers

A:add a "drive letter" to the "send to" drop down list

Place a shortcut to the drive (or folder) you want to be the target in c:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\SendTo folder. That is the directory from which the Send To menu is loaded. I'm looking at a win2000 system and the XP location may be slightly different but it's somewhere in there. If you put the shortcut in the "Default User" folder then whenever you create a new user, that user will have the same option.

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Joe.

Ok where do I begin?! I have been dealing with viruses, spyware/malware for the past week. It all started with Norton advising me that I had been infected with Trojan. Vundo and Trojan.Zonebac. After that I started receiving many different pop ups warning me about critical system alerts. I also had an annoying yellow triangle at the bottom of my screen warning me about different trojans and worms. More evil friends included 2 new icons that had made their home on my desktop one named "Live Safety Center" and the other "Online Security Guide", also installed was a new toolbar named "Security Toolbar 7.1". I have scanned my computer with many different programs and have somehow finally managed to get rid of the pop ups and toolbar, although I know I'm probably still infected somewhere. I'm sorry this is so long but, I wanted to explain EVERYTHING! I'm running Windows XP SP2, and have followed all steps to post. I downloaded DSS, but after many attempts to run, it just wouldn't let me. I do have a fresh hijackthis log and my Panda report, I hope this is good enough.

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

Hi all

Ill cut to the chase.

What I am asking is someway of turning the Entire Windows Desktop/Screen "Black and White" not simply High Contrast.

I am one of those unfortunate ones, like many, that suffer from quite severe migraines from time to time. Couple this with frequent headaches, sometimes daily. This obviously isnt helped by the fact that my hobby and career are both in IT. I have tried every possible solution to alleviate the headaches. Lay off certain foods, make sure to have a balanced diet. Turn off any strong lighting around my computer screen, remove any strong colours from the desktop etc......

Windows XP / Vista have tried to address this issue with the accessibility wizard, where you can select the High Contrast Options to take any strong colours off the screen. Unfortunately this still doesnt get rid of everything.

When you make any major changes or "logoff" in XP/Vista, the screen fades to "black and white" for a short period. If you know what I am on about, thats the effect I am after.

More than likely a black and white layer is laid over the desktop to create this effect, unfortunately you would not be able to access anything underneath.

I need a fully functional XP machine in complete black and white.

On old CRT monitors you were able to remove the colour, making the screen B&W, but with alot of LCD screens this function is not available.

If anyone has any ideas, you would be helping so many people.

Any assist... Read more

This is a resurection of an old unresolved Vista Post, and it also happens in Windows 7.
====================================
Original subject - Start Menu - program search issue
I use Windows Mail for my daily email tasks, and would like to be able to
open the program by using the vista search bar built into the start menu. The
problem is, when i search for "mai" it brings up Windows Mail, and I can hit
enter and load the program. However, when I search for "mail", it returns:
"No items match your search." I have it set to index both the start menu and
my programs directory, and have even tried to rebuild the index.

It seems kind of strange that Vista would recognize that when I type "mai" I
want my mail programs, but when I actually type "mail", it gets confused...
and this in turn has -me- confused.

I tried copying a fresh version of the file to \Windows\System32. No dice. I tried renaming it all uppercase and then all lowercase. Nothing. I put a copy in the root directory. No effect. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked.

Then--doh!--I stopped thrashing and did what I should have done initially: I dug into the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned about XP's built-in Rebuild command. It can often easily fix "Missing HAL" and similar problems in just a minute or two. If you know about this command and how to use it, you can potentially save yourself hours and hours of manually reinstalling or rebuilding a failed operating system.

Okay, I have an ATI Radeon 8500 on my Windows XP system, and one day, after my dad had used the computer, the 3D video driver stoppeed working. He can't recall doing anything. So it goes. I think "whatever", downloaded the latest Catalyst drivers, and try to install it, only to get the message "INF Error, Video Driver Not Found" and then "Try to set up your adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup". I tried googling for info (apparently it's a common-ish issue), but I never found anything that worked. I tried uninstalling anything ATI and then installing, to no avail. I tried uninstalling the error-listed VGA adapter from the Device Manager and then running install which didn't work. Rebooting after that also didn't work (it popped up with "New hardware found" after the reboot, but it couldn't find the proper drivers).

After an unedifying series of adventures I got to http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=45&kind=1 which has several drivers for my mobo. I first downloaded (obviously) the VGA driver, and tried to run setup. Unfortunately, after preparing the install, an Error message pops up saying "The system cannot detect the device, please confirm that the device is configured properly and restart the setup program." I then tried downloading the AGP upgrade, installed it, but nothing changed. I also downloaded the BIOS update, since it mention... Read more

the radeon is not integrated with your motherboard, and the onboard video has probably been disabled in the BIOS. to install the appropriate drivers for an ATI radeon 8500 card you need to download and install the drivers from ati's website. from there you can download the latest version of catalyst and install that.

My friend's computer seemingly got a virus, since it sent an email to somebody in her email list, on its own. She asked me to take a look.

She had a virus checker, but it had never been updated. So I installed "AVGfree" and ran that. It found a "trojan horse" virus as well as some other stuff that it said should be removed, so I did. I then ran "ccleaner" and it suggested to remove a TON of crap, like 500mb worth of files (she installs dumb stuff on her computer all the time). I removed these files. Then I ran "spybot" and it removed some stuff. I then defragged, which it needed.

So here I am, feeling like a hero, but then I reboot and there's a message saying that "lsass.exe" cannot be found. I cancel this message, and then there's another message saying that "ipwins.dll" cannot be found.

I tell her to just ignore these messages until I figure it out, but then she informs me today that she cannot access her email account on her computer. So I've gotta figure out how to fix this.

Any advice?? Thanks.

A:After virus checking and cleaning, "lsass.exe" and "ipwins.dll" missing

She could try the system file checker : tell her to prepare her XP CD (she'll need it if it asks to replace the missing files), then she will have to go to start => run, and type "sfc /scannow".

If that fails, she can perform a repair install if she has an OEM, retail or upgrade XP CD (recovery CD's cant' do that). She will have to boot on the cd, thus she needs first to change the boot order in the bios to CD-rom first. Then, when XP setup loads, choose the option "To setup Windows XP now" (not the one about recovery console). On the next screen (after the licence agreement) she should be given the option to repair her current xp installation by typing R.

Once that's done, if the CD wasn't a SP2 version, first thing is to go to windows update to reinstall XP SP2 and all updates she could have done since. Don't surf on the internet before any antivirus and firewall (either windows or another) is enabled.

When I click on anything to "send to" something, my PC stalls completely for a while and my CPU usage sky-rockets. This just started to happen recently. If I wait for a while, about a minute, the PC will go back to normal and then I can ues the "send to" command without stalling out and my CPU usage drops down. Anyone knows what is causing this problem or know how to fix it?

When I launch WU form the std start menu shortcut, it launches wuapp.exe and just hangs. I have to terminate the process in task manager. Additional launches = additional hung processes.

Shortcut target: %windir%\system32\wuapp.exe startmenu
Starts in: %windir%\system32\

The same condition occurs if I try to launch wuapp.exe directly from %windir%\system32\
Yesterday, I checked the Effective permissions for my user on wuapp.exe = full control
Today, after running the Windows WU Troubleshooter and WU MS Fixit, the permissions = read, read & execute.

The issue is twofold. The standard WU shortcut "hangs" but Control Panel WU does not hang, until I try to view installed updates (viewing history seems to be ok). I have to terminate the process in Task Manager once I try to view installed updates.

As a workaround, I created a shortcut to Control Panel WU - this allows me to check for and apply updates.

Shortcut target: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update

A few things that might have caused this - recent activity, but just guessing I installed Advanced Uninstaller Pro and played with it, but did not apply anything it suggested. One thing I tried was duplicate files - eventually killing it due to time (lots of dups, lots of files).

I'm not sure that resetting WU would actually cure your problem - it sounds to me more of a systemic problem, possibly to do with one of the involved technologies (scripting, NET, etc.).

My wuapp.exe has TrustedInstaller as owner, with only Read and Execute permissions for users and Admins.

I modify and clean up the start menu entries on all my machines, and it's an irritation having to construct shortcuts to a program file that you are looking at in Explorer by-

Highlight and copy the folder address from Explorer address bar
Paste into the target shortcut address
Manually type a "\"
Highlight and copy the .exe file name
Paste (append) into the shortcut target address
What I want is a right-click menu item to copy the FULL PATH of the currently selected file to the clipboard. Just like the "Copy link location" menu function in Firefox.
Note this is not the same as the normal "Create Shortcut" option which creates a shortcut file in the current folder, I just want the path text on the clipboard.
Sounds simple but i'm not much of a registry hacker. Any idea how to do this?

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello and thank you for reading my post.

Code:

I would like to start another "cmd.exe" console as "u2" and "as administrator".
(So, "u2" is not the current logged in user).

The following command:

Code:
u1 cmd.exe> runas /user:u2 "cmd.exe"
runs "cmd.exe" as "u2" but not "as administrator".

I would like to do this in command line. Can you tell me how?

Best regards.

Nota:
u1 cmd.exe> means: I'm running "cmd.exe" as "u1".

A:Run "cmd.exe" as a given user and "as administrator" in command line

Hi Lea,

I don't believe that what you want to accomplish is possible. This is because Windows only "runs" one login at a time, unlike some true multi user operating systems, such as Linux.

If your logged in as U1, then you can only perform operations as U1, or as the Administrator. As far as running things as the Administrator is concerned, I believe in this case that you simply inherit the Administrators permission levels, thus permitting you to perform elevated activities.

If your U1 login has Administrator privileges then running as Administrator will be no different to running as U1!

Good luck

Greetings all. How do I add the keyboard shortcut command "ctrl+F" to the Internet Explorer context menu? I know where I need to go in the registry to add an item to the context menu of Internet Explorer, but I don't know how to add a keyboard shortcut.

A:Adding "ctrl+F" command to Internet Explorer context menu

I am not sure I understand. Ctrl+F activates the "Find on this page" search box in Internet Explorer (IE) and funcions when you are working in the IE window, there is no setting up required for this.

A right click on the IE icon for a "Find on this page" in the context menu will not be very useful since IE does not yet know what page you intend to look at. If you just want a search function for IE pages you can use the search box on the taskbar.

I have a bizarre problem that I can't seem to solve. I looked all over the internet for solutions, but can't find any.

My problem is that when I right-click on Mp3 files, the pop-up menu shows "Edit Song Information" as the default command for Mp3 files. The default command should be "Play In Winamp".

I've looked for a command in Winamp to change the default command back with no success. I've checked the Mp3 info in Folder Options > View File Types and the "Play In Winamp" command IS set as the default.

One of my other programs must be causing the problem. I have the following audio programs or codecs installed.

Winamp 5.52
Windows Media Player 10
VLC Media Player
iTunes (I don't really use it except for m4b files)
Roxio Easy Media Creator 9
RealPlayer 10.5
K-Lite Codec Pack 3.7.0

In MS ACCESS...

How can I make a separate copy of the Window submenu item in a custom menu bar that will allow the user to switch from window to window (but nothing else)?

In my app I want to restrict the things that a user can do so I created my own, pared-down versions of the standard menu bar and tool bar and turn off the standard ones upon startup. I want to add the "Window" submenu to my custom toolbar. In this custom version of the window submenu, I don't want to be able to tile, arrange, or hide/unhide, I simply want a list of visable windows and to be able to choose one of them to be the active window.

I know how to put a new submenu item in a custom menu and how to insert menu items into it but I don't know how to add this un-named capability to my custom "Window" submenu.

I tried copying the existing Window submenu from the standard menu bar onto my own custom menu bar by ctrl-dragging it, but rather than creating a new instance of the windows submenu, it apparently only created a new pointer or shortcut to the existing window submenu item because when I went to delete the tile/cascade/hide/etc items from the custom window submenu, they also disappeared from the window submenu in the standard menu bar.

How can I make a separate copy of the Window submenu item in a custom menu bar that will allow the user to switch from window to window (but nothing else)?
