Back up your computer under Control Panel doesn't work anymore

Q: Back up your computer under Control Panel doesn't work anymore

When I click on "Back up your computer" in Control Panel->System and Security, I get a gui that says "Back up or restore your files" at the top and nothing else. The rest of the window is blank. No "Turn off schedule",
"Create a system image" or "Create a system repair disc" on the left. I've tried a reboot. This is on Windows 7 Pro Service pack 1 (32 bit - 4gb ram). I've been using the backup method for several years. All of a sudden - poof.

When I click on My Computer either on Desktop or in the Start menu folder, a screen appears as shown here. But I can access these items from the Windows explorer icon on the task bar!!
Also whenever I click on any folder or drive in My computer window, the contents open in a new window and I end up in a large number of windows opened by the time I reach a file or a folder.
How can I fix this?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Sounds like you may have a virus.

If you can, boot into Safe Mode with Networking and run a full virus scan.

Malwarebytes is an excellent choice for this job and you can download it here: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

I'm running Microsoft professional, Internet Explorer and have a Google toolbar.

All attempts to add software are blocked and the add remove feature in the control panel won't open. For example, I can't update my old version of Itunes because the popup for the update gets blocked. I know about the popup blocker in the Google toolbar, and how to handle that, that isn't the problem. In Internet Options, the security setting is at medium and under the advanced tab I reset all options to default.

A:Add Remove In Control Panel Doesn't Work

What version of IE are you using?

What other security programs do you have on the computer? It's possible that one of them is blocking the pop-ups.

Well I dont know what caused this but I can open the control panel but when I click on something eg. "uninstall a program" or "change the theme" there comes a message saying windows explorer has stopped working, thus restarting explorer.exe

I'm running windows 7 professional 32 bit.

Edit: it also crashes when I reopen the control panel when the control panel is already open.

I still have the Win7 RC on my compy and it has worked great, until today. My son touched the front of the computer and made is shutdown. Upon it coming back up, I noticed that my mouse and keyboard weren't working. Later, I saw that the net and USB ports weren't working. But, the issue is that they just dont work in windows. I can use my keyboard just fine out of windows. Is there something I can do to remedy the situation?

I just spent the last 30 hours downloading and installing all the update for 8.1 on my new Acer Laptop. Now the system will not shut down, update will not open and restore does not work. Also the sound system does not work. I've tried the recovery options but all I get is unending aero. Shutdown produces background apps still running and will only work if I physically turn off the power.

I'm at a loss to know what to do next. I did not expect to have these problems with a brand new system and by following all the proper procedures for updating.

I tried putting RAM into my computer and I must have put it in wrong because it started smelling. I took the RAM out and saw that part of the gold was burnt. I immediately turned the computer off and took out the RAM. The tower will turn on and the fan runs and everything but nothing will come up on the screen. Could the computer be fried? And if so how can I fix it? I'm not sure of the specs because someone built it for us out of spare parts. It's about 8 years old. Thank you for your help.

im going to say if u smelled something chances are that yes something did get fried like the motherboard.in that case it can be fixed but motherboards are not cheap to fix or replace.id suggest unless u know what u are doing id let a computer tech see if it can even be fixed or if its worth it to do so.hope this helps.

Yesterday i notices that i have 40 GB unallocated in my primary hard drive(i have two; the main one with vista has 160 GB and 320 on the second one.) and i couldnt extend the drive using disk managment, so i saw this really good program called MiniTool Partition wizard, but when i run the program and tried to extend it told me I had to reboot because the drive is in use or something, so i rebooted and then i got this BootMgr not found error. So i saw this post and i use a command through the windows vista disk's command prompt, it was recboot /rebuild bcd i think, and it worked. I restarted the computer and before the windows loaded(i think) it loaded this window saying it was extending the hard drive and it took like 5 hours. So when i got on the computer today and i see some wierd stuff:
1.when i boot up i get S.M.A.R.T. status bad backup and replace
2.The windows aero theme was gone, it changed to classic.
3.Some of the icons were gone aswell.
4.My computer, control panel, documents dont work at all (i click them and nothing happens).
5.My google chrome bookmarks are gone.

Welcome to TSF.

You're infected with a trojan...TWICE!.

There is a procedure for removing the duplicate infection in one go, but I can't remember. So, we are going to run the tool twice instead.
Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode. Or Save them to Wordpad so that you can access them in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
Go into Add/Remove and uninstall:

Delete the folder:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
Continue to do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the menu item - Safe Mode.

Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat

here's my problem, as near as I can tell,

a few months ago the wireless connection on my hp laptop stopped "seeing" my wireless network. Eventually, during a scan with my panda security system a virus was found (for some reason it is no longer in the logs-but is was, I think, trojan or sasser in my outlook folders-and it was deleted). The wireless seemed to work again but then went back to being "invisible" to my wireless detector on the laptop. I went to HP downloads to see if I could just update the "driver" and ended up updating "system bios" which seemed to work also, for a while, then the system goes back to not seeing the wireless. I could sometimes do the right-click "repair" option to get it to connect but that stops working after a while. I think that there is still some residual virus lurking in the system to cause this problem so that is why I am posting here. Thanks for any help you can give

I am not exactly sure if this is where I attach the dds.txt text but will put it here just in case:

I'm running Windows 8.1 64bits.

I have noticed since a couple of days ago that my Control+Tab shortcut does not work anymore. Not on text editors, not on web browsers, not on property pages, nowhere.

Control+Shift+Tab (reverse tab navigation) still works.

I have checked the results on an application called "Ethervane ActiveHotkeys". In there, it states that Control+Shift+Tab is not an active hotkey but that Control+Tab IS. I assume that some application decided to globally pick up Control+Tab for itself.

I have tried restarting (and testing as quickly as possible before all programs load), I have tried closing down all applications that the task manager will let me and still the shortcut does not work.

I tried going to msconfig and disabling all programs and non-Microsoft services with no luck, but if I start Windows 8 in Safe Mode then Control+Tab works again.

I tried running Hotkey Commander; it shows Control+Tab as being bound by some application, but does not show which application it is. If I delete/disable the hotkey binding from inside Hotkey Commander then it works again until I restart.

I'm stumped as to how to troubleshoot this further and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

I really have a few issues i need to get fixed, but i first need the control panel. The computer is a work computer that i use very seldom. It works without the control panel ( explorer and other installed programs). It has been gone for over a year, but i now need it so that i can network the other work computer. It started after an infection. I don't remember the virus name, but i got the machine to work again and let it be. The computer has only one user "owner" to log in. I would expect Owner to have "administrator" privilege, but it won't allow any changes. My hope is that if i down load and run "combofix" will the control come back? Is there a simpler way?

A:i need my control panel back

Combofix might work. Is the work computer part of a domain? Control panel access can be taken away by the domain security policy. The easiest thing may be to run a repair install of Windows, or do a full clean install. Repair can replace files that have been deleted by malware or by a malware scanner. The plus to a repair is that your programs don't have to be reinstalled (usually), you just need to reapply Microsoft patches. The downside is that infections are not wiped away, since the file system tables remain intact. A fresh install get's rid of the malware but you have to reinstall everything and apply a bunch of Microsoft patches. Of course, if the computer is a part of a domain and has a domain security policy, you may not be able to do either.

Highlight Explorer in the left pane. Look for this entry in the right pane.

A:Help, Control Panel doesn't let me in (Hijackthis log)

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

I have to tell you that is a very infected machine!

The P2P programs you have installed expose you to risks because of the nature of the P2P file sharing process. File sharing/P2P programs rely on members giving and gaining unrestricted access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. It also exposes you to very malicious worms and trojans. You change those risky default settings to a safer configuration but the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection.

Go to add/remove programs and remove all P2P programs from your machine!

Please download (save) SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your desktop. SmitfraudFix runs under W2K, XP only.

Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Select all of the contents and Extract them
to a new folder called SmitfraudFix.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may aler... Read more

How can I force XP to stay with that 5.1 selection?

I use an application that installs itself as both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. I have no idea why, just bad programming I guess (I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit). As such its control panel shows up twice in Control Panels. It's a small complaint I know but for the sake of having OCD I'd rather there only be one version of the cp.

Despite Googling for a while on this subject I can't find a proper solution. I've seen plenty of suggestions mentioning removing/renaming the associated cpl file but, this control panel doesn't appear to use a cpl file, I can't find one at any rate. The only thing I can even vaguely find referencing it is in the Registry. I tried deleting those keys but the 32bit control panel persists (so I restored them for now).

Those registry keys mention a DLL file, inside the program's installation folder, and sure enough there are two, one called ControlPanelResources.dll and the other ControlPanelResources64.dll. As stated the app is configured to install itself twice, seemingly, the 32bit and the 64bit version, all in the same place -Program Files (x86).

I have also looked in the registry under the usual areas relating to control panels; HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Control Panel, but there are no keys in there referencing these control panels. The keys I found are elsewhere in the registry.

Any ideas? All I want to do is remove the 32bit instance from control panels, nothing else. But clearly the cpl (if there is one) is h... Read more

I wanted to delete one of my user accounts (Windows Vista) But when I clicked User Settings, it refused to respond, so I tried the other opinions, They didn't work either. EVERYTHING with a little shield beside it does not respond. on the recent tasks it will say what I clicked, but that's pretty much it. I really need to know how to fix it.

is there a solution for this coz i really like it at first glance coz its a full screen control panel and i like that metro style

A:Control Panel App doesn't show up nor open

Hello Skream,

Do you mean that the Control Panel app is not on the Metro Start screen?

Control Panel - Open in Windows 8
If so, then you could create a Metro Apps shortcut from the first tutorial below, create a shortcut of Control Panel to pin to Apps, then pin it from Apps to the Metro "Start" screen in the second tutorial below.

Hi ,

I don't know what had happened , i just on my computer and a couple of error messages appear. I can't open control panel now, when i clicked on it , it just open and closes by itself in 1 second.
I also can't update windows , an error message will appear.

It says :
You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. To use all microsoft windows features , such as all updates from windows update; get the latest updates and receive product support, your copy of microsoft windows must be validated as genuine.

Go online and resolve now : http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=64187 (seems like they gave me a broken link)

I also can't use my snipping tool to take a screenshot of the error. I don't know why it can't even open.

I used windows defender and they found an error : code0x8024402c

Please help. Thank you !

Odd problem. Yesterday I wanted to check the status of the batteries in my Microsoft wireless mouse, so opened Control Panel, and clicked "Printers and Other Hardware" (whose icon actually shows a mouse). Choices are Pick a task: View installed printers or Add a printer. Under "or Pick a Control Panel icon, I have only Printers and Faxes, and Scanners and Cameras. THE MOUSE ISN'T A CHOICE, AS IN NOT THERE! In order to get to the mouse, I have to switch to classic (Win98) mode, which contains an icon for the mouse.

Wasn't that way we I first got the computer. Why doesn't my mouse show on the XP style of the Control Panel?

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I suddenly noticed that my ALT-TAB wasn't working anymore, Ive searched google for hours on how to fix it but i couldn't find anything that fixed my problem.
When I press Alt-Tab, I get a menu with File, Edit, View, Tools and Help in the window that I currently have open but the little taskswitch menu doesn't come up. The problem is not my graphics card since the problem happend so suddenly and 5 minutes earlier I could alt tab just fine. The keys do work individually and all other keyboard shortcuts involving alt still work.
Does anyone know a fix for this problem?

Thanks, QuadWar

Here is my problem. I used my computer one morning, all was fine when I left for work...screen saver came on and all. When I got home, I moved the mouse around to try and disable the screen saver, nothing happened. Not the first time I've had that problem, so I turned the computer off, and when I turned it on again, and everytime since, I get a series of 6-8 beeps...then nothing. Nothing pops up on the monitor even though the computer is on. I've tried opening up the pc and making sure all the connections are tight, to which in my knowledge they are.

Does anyone know what my problem could be? Do I need to take it to a repair shop or what? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I am having this very lame issue with my computer. Every time I try to open AIM, it instantly closes after the AIM window appears. I open the task manager and I see it for a second and it closes again. Similarly, my WMP doesn't open at all. I think it my be some kind of malware, but I did a complete scan with my Kaspersky AV and it found nothing and the same results with my SuperAntiSpyware program. So I am pretty lost. I found some other person was having issues with their AIM on this site as well and you guys were able to help out. So I figured I would try it.

Once upon a time my two USB ports worked fine... but not anymore.

A few deatails quickly: I have an AMD Athlon 800 MHz PC, 512 Mb Ram, Soundblaster, N-Videa G Force 2, modem, Saitek X35 joystick and use Windows 98.

I use the USB ports for my joystick and my Palm Pilot cradle which allows me to back up the data from my handheld to the PC. About a month ago neither device was recognised for some reason. Under Settings it tells me that the devices work properly. What's going on? I've not installed any new hardware, only a couple of games.

Also, I don't know if this is related but my computer sometimes reboots for no apparent reason. Sometimes Windows won't even load but says 'Windows Protection Error...'

I really need your help, peeps!

Hey guys,

Sometimes I get audio problems where I cannot hear internet sound but can hear other sounds. When this happens the Device Volume under the volume tab of the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window is grayed out. I usually just run Mats_Run.AudioPlayback (mr. fix it) and it fixes everything in 30 seconds and tells me the errors that occurred are because sound device was turned off, and because sound was set to really low level, and probably another thing too.

However, now when I try and run it it says "Mr. Fix it cannot continue because an error has occurred", and right underneath it it says,"the troubleshooter does not apply to this computer,". Is there a file that it cannot find perhaps? Does anyone know how Mats.AudioPlayback miracle fix it works? What file might be corrupt? Also sometimes some files will tell me to check if I have the proper authorization to run a program... WTF is going on? Please help someone.

The mats audio issue happend after I removed malware from my computer and and a rootkit. I removed it with malwarebytes and then with combofix. I can tell if there is a virus because I can sense when my computer is running 99.0 percent instead of 100%. Now it runs fast as hell and no viruses. Can someone tell me how to trouble shoot it with advanced techniques?

A:Mr. Fix it doesn't work anymore!

Just for future reference, Combofix should only be used under the direct supervision of one of Malware Removal Team members. Using this tool incorrectly can result in more problems than what you started out with.

Have you looked in the Device Manager to see if there are any driver problems?

Try running chkdsk c: /p

You say you thought you were the administrator.
Just confirm by going to User Accounts

Also can you make a temporary (or not) new user with Admin rights
Logout of your current user (if you have a password in your current user just remove it first)
Log in to your new user
click on one of the icons in Control Panel again
If it works consider deleting your old useraccount (saving your files)

Warning - removing your old useraccount will lose all your user settings:
Wallpaper
Screensaver
Email
Favorites
My Documents
Internet/Mail settings
Some game backup files (ie the registration)

Hello justnothing and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware inthe log. It is clean. The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues. HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues. For these types of issues I would suggest posting to the Windows XP Home and Professional forum. The techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to the operating system, performance and applications. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found. When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum. Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.Cheers.OT

Hey everyone,

This is the first time I've posted about any kind of computer issue, so please respond if you need any kind of information that I don't give... but anyway...

Every time I go into the control panel and try to open up Network Connections, it simply freezes. Nothing loads, it just sits there with the little hourglass until I ctrl+alt+delete out of it... I am running Windows XP, SP2 I believe. Any help would be greatly appreciated, let me know if you need me to find out any more information about my computer as well.

Also, I don't know if this is relevant or will help in any way, but I usually have a problem with svchost.exe... when I open up process explorer, it is generally using upwards of 80% of my CPU... so I double click on that process and kill each of the ones that are using high amounts of my CPU, usually around 2 or 4 that I end up killing. Don't know if this can be tied in at all... but just thought it could possibly help.

Hi Everyone,

I have been struggling with getting my SLI to work.

System:

The VGA cards are:
Connected via SLI link.
Connected to power.
Connected correctly on the Mother Board.

My Mother Board is SLI compatible.
My PSU is SLI compatible.
My drivers are installed and up to date.
I have re-installed my drivers as well.
I have updated my Bios as well. (During which my Primary drive got corrupted and I had to start all over)

Nvidia Control Panel is STILL not giving me any SLI configuration options. It detects that both VGA cards are connected and I can select which core to use, but nothing about SLI.

I'm stuck and need to be pointed in the right direction.

Can anyone offer some advice?

Thanks in advance!

A:Nvidia Control Panel doesn't show SLI options

I know you said you've updated the bios but have you checked for settings related to SLI in the BIOS? There may be a setting to enable it.

Also from some of the forums I've read, people have resolved a similar issue by rolling back the Realtek Ethernet driver, apparently this is related to the Z68 boards. May be worth a shot at least since updating the driver would be simple enough.

Hello!
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium on a laptop HP Pavilion dv6000 and it was bought around february this year.
My computer automatically installed some updated without me noticing, and it restarted and everything (could the next windows version include an auto-save function for notepad, please? i lost everything i wrote, because i forgot to save...)... And when i logged in again, and everything kind of started properly... I realized that my wallpaper doesn't show up, no icons on the desktop, and the toolbar freezes and explorer.exe takes 50% cpu without doing anything at all.
now i can manage without the toolbar, but it is quite annoying anyway. the security updates i installed are (i'll just write the code numbers, because i am running windows in swedish)
KB956390
KB956841
KB957095
KB890830
KB954211
KB956391

and i have not installed service pack 1 yet. i didn't have enough space on my disk at first, but now i have deleted some files and there should be no problem to install the service pack 1, but when i click on "start installation", it just stops at "preparing installation".
edit: i got an error trying to install it. currently going to try the stand alone installation.

everything else runs just fine, and i don't see anything suspicious in the Task Manager, so it makes me think that it is not a virus.

does anyone have any ideas?

thanks for all comments.

My laptop computer (Compaq 1710 running Win2000) will no longer burn CDs. Using Roxio Easy CD Creator, when I insert a CD, the program ejects the disk and tells me to insert one that is blank or has space on it. If I try to use the "DirectCD" program (which allows you to treat a CD-RW as a regular disk drive), Roxio tells me that the drive is in use (unknown error 0x8000001a); if I try to write to the drive via the Explorer, I get an error that says the drive is read-only.

I have no problems reading CDs. I have tried several CDs and I always get the same error. I have even tried inserting the CD upside down.

I have reinstalled the CD drivers and reinstalled Roxio and this has no impact on the problem. I was able to burn CDs at one point in time, but I don't have any good way of determining all the software I've installed between then and now (I don't burn CDs very often so I don't know when the problem started, although the computer is only a few months old).

Any suggestions on how to track down this problem?

A:MY CD-WRITER DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE

Try a different brand of media. If that does not work, it is likely a hardware issue. There are different lenses for different functions and one laser can go bad while the others still work. What software are you using to write to disks? It can also be a problem with the burning program.

I don't know what happened, but one day I was typing away and my delete key just suddenly stopped working! I removed the button and tried pressing it other ways, but it still didn't work. Now I can't delete anything (which is what I do a lot of the times) and I can't use ctrl+alt+del anymore!!!

Someone PLEASE help me on this one! I won't want to have to change keyboards because this is the best one I have (that I bought at a semi-high price/semi-low price). I reloaded the program for the keyboard, but when I first plugged it in it didn't need to be loaded up.

It's a Logitech keyboard, a kinda' nice one too...

EDIT: Never mind, I tried to revert everything back to the original InstallShield again with renaming and it appears to be working correctly now.

I tried installing the Sims on my laptop but ran into a lot of problems. At one point it actually uninstalled itself when trying to fix it, but then wouldn't let me reinstall because "It was already installed".

I went to EA for troubleshooting and eventually found myself at this page:
http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/olh_adp.php?p_faqid=10713&p_created=1124387761&p_sid=$p_sid

And tried this:
Reinstall the installation InstallShield software.

1. Click the Start button on the Windows Taskbar.
2. Select Run.
3. Type C:\Program Files\Common Files into the text box and click OK.
4. Right-click the InstallShield folder, and select Rename.
5. Change the name to InstallShieldOld.
6. Start the game installation again to reinstall the InstallShield components with the newest version.

And now, whenever I try to install anything, I get this:
"Error extracting support files:

The system cannot find the path specified."

I don't even care about The Sims anymore... what can I do to fix this?

I recently bought a new graphics card for my computer, and since then I've updated windows and installed it's drivers.
The problem I have had since buying the video card, is that no USB headset's now work with my computer.

I've tried updating my audio drivers (which doesn't give me any sound at all). To uninstalling and reinstalling drivers for both the headset and the audio itself.
So far nothing has worked, I have full speaker functionality, but no headsets will work, nor will the microphone on my webcam anymore either.
Is there perhaps more I can do?

I have system spec's in my profile, but if there is anything else I should post please let me know.
Thanks!

A:USB headset doesn't work anymore

If your USB ports are working. I would try the easy fix first.

Check your device manager and make sure the headset and driver is loaded and functioning.

In the start search box type "sound" (no quotes) and select sound. Your headset should show up as a device. It should be selected as default. For some apps you have to change this default back and forth because the code in the app is not written for a head set. I'll post a clip of my sound panel but it does not show a headset. I have none on this machine. But if yours is loaded correctly you will have it.

Nevermind, I solved this; just had to go to sound in control panel and reset the device.

This is the first tech support problem I've had in a long while that's just completely over my head - but it certainly is just that, so I come humbly to you.

Fortunately, at least, i know exactly how it happened (I just don't know how to fix it). Everything was working fine, when I decided that I wanted to download and install the AllMusicConverter, so that I could convert M4as to mp3s It asked me if I wished to install an audio driver, MusCAudio, and without thinking I said yes.

Suddenly, my sound does not work. I look up the driver, it's mentioned in the context of trojans and viruses. I uninstall and restart. Sadly, things still don't work.

My other sound driver, which is still on the computer and updated, is Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221. I'm running Vista on an HP Pavillion.

Thanks!

Here's the scenario...
Several months ago, I helped a friend install a wireless network at his house. Worked fine...no problems. Has one desktop that is hard-wired to the router, and a laptop and another desktop that were using the wireless.

Approx. 2 months ago, network quit working. At this time, he had comcast come out and install their Voip system for his phones that he uses for business. At this time, they also brought one of their modems (told him it was better), and put it in, instead of his linksys that was originally used. His network just went downhill after that. No wireless network whatsoever, and the desktop that is hard wired, can only access internet through the router, if the mac is cloned to the router...hmmmm...
Yet, I can bring the laptop to my house, and it picks right up on my wireless network and requests the WEP key when the network is clicked on. Give it the wep, and it's got access.

The modem that Comcast installed is one with a battery backup.
Have they attached the mac of the desktop to that modem?? Is that why nothing is working?

He's getting very frustrated with it all. Of course Comcast can't help, even thought it was working before they installed that modem!!
I have compared ALL of his route settings to mine, as he is now using the exact same router at his house. All settings match, except that we cloned the mac so the desktop had access.
Any ideas what's going on here??

Catalyst 5.11 drivers were the last to be bundled with the old control panel. At least with 5.11, there was an option between the old control panel and the new CATALYST .net control panel. We are up to version 5.12 and 5.13 and you are now forced to use the new .net Control Panel, the old control is now not an option anymore. By signing this petition you are telling ATi you might be boycotting future purchases of ATi hardware.

If it's possible, spread the word.

http://www.petitiononline.com/ctrlpanl/petition.html

To: ATi

It's time to boycott purchases of ATi products until the old control panel is brought back. We want the option of the old control panel back.

I am an outraged customer of a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9500 Pro. The last set of drivers to support the old (good) control panel has disappeared in Catalyst drivers 5.12 and 5.13 and you are forced to use the CATALYST .net Control Panel. Bring back the old control panel

The new Catalyst Control Center, is

1. Slow

2. Memory hogging

3. Unresponsive

4. Crash prone

5. Requires the Microsoft .net Framework which is a 23.1MB download from microsoft

6. Takes longer to download than the old control panel.

7. Loads unneccary processes to your system (CLI.exe) which can't be disabled anywhere in the new Control Panel, no for reason at all CLI.exe is loaded

Win 7 64 bit SP1 Home Premium.
I have two problems that I have been trying to solve for some time.
1. System hangs at "Log Off" on shutdown or restart. Every time.
2. When I try to bring up "Control Panel" I get this error msg:
::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}\0
Application not found
This happens for all apps within control panel, but with different msg.
So I can't get to any control panel apps.

What I have tried:
. Works the same in safe mode. (Except for log-off)
. I have run the following programs for both virus and root-kit.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
RogueKiller
Spybot - Search & Destroy 2
SpywareBlaster
SUPERAntiSpyware
Avast
No reported errors.
. I have googled and found similar problems but not the same. Their fixes don't work.
. My two latest image backups have the same control panel problem.
I didn't notice it until the log-off problem started.
Please let me know if I need to post any logs or info.
I am not a computer wizard! That's why I am asking you guys.
Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Log-off and Control Panel don't work

The only times I've seen that Control Panel couldn't open, on various versions of Windows, was when the computer had serious infections.

As for "My two latest image backups have the same control panel problem", if the computer has problems they will be in the backup and restore to the same condition as when the backup was made. Or in other words, Windows has to be in good order before a good backup can be accomplished, so the problems probably existed before the earliest of those 2 backups.

Have you tried putting the words control panel in the Start, Search box then pressing Enter to see if that works?

Try the fix at Kelly's Korner. Restore the Control Panel - #256 on the left.Right click on it and save the .reg file to your desktop. Then, double click on the file icon (on your desktop) to merge it into your registry. You may need to reboot your computer for the changes to take affect. With any fix like this you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

Hi Windows Seven Forums,
I'm walking through what should be a very easy FTP server install from the Windows 7 Features. This walkthrough is great...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrzNPq-B6Ts

Unfortunately, when I click on:

Control Panel
Programs and Features
Turn Windows features on or off
Internet Information Services plus sign
FTP server plus sign
FTP Extensibility check box is clicked which highlights all FTP server check boxes
Click OK.
Microsoft Windows then says Please wait while Windows makes changes to features. This might take several minutes.

Once installed, I click on:
Control Panel
Administrative Tools (click on View by: Large icons if you can't see Administrative Tools)
...and no Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager?

I have restarted the PC and removed unchecked the FTP server and restarted...what's happened?

A:FTP server doesn't show in control panel, administrative tools?

Ok, a bit of a background on this:

I HAD a dual boot with XP and Win 7 on two separate drives with a menu system at the beginning.
a) XP on an IDE - 80gig - installed first about 3 years ago
b) Win7 64 bit - SATA 1T - installed in the new year.

I lost the 80gig drive and so I bought a new SATA and recovered XP to it using Acronis backup recovery. Works well now and XP boots with everything recovered.

Now here is where the problem begins. The Dual boot menu does not show up anymore when I turn on the computer.
I cannot boot with XP if I have the Win7 drive as the drive priority in the BIOS and vise versa. If I have the XP drive as the priority drive in the BIOS, I do not get the option to boot to Win 7.

So I researched and tried this
1) a repair with Win7 installation disk (repair startup). Tried it and did not remedy the situation
2) Ran BCD and found the XP drive set it up as a boot drive. Rebooted and it did indeed give me two menu item (early version of windows and Win7), but when I select EARLY VERISON OF WINDOWN, it gives me an "NTLDR error" or something similar (sorry that is going from memory)

So I am at a loss of what to do to enable a dual boot at this point. I really don't want to reinstall either XP or Win7. Is there another way to fix this?

A:Dual boot with XP doesn't work anymore...pls help

If you can boot into 7, install EasyBCD 2.0 after doing quick registration to use beta. Remove any XP entry in Add/Remove and then Add it back. Accept offer for boot files, Save.

If this will not correct Dual Boot, post back a screenshot of your full Disk Mgmt drive map using Snipping Tool in Start menu, attach file using paper clip in reply box. Add a snip of your Easy listings page.

If you cannot boot Win7 yet or the above fails, Try using EasyBCD2.0 in XP to Add 7 after removing it if necc. in Add/Remove tab. You'll need to install Net Framework 2.0 to use it in XP.

If this fails, boot into Win7 DVD Repair console, click through to Recov Tools list to run Startup Repair up to three separate times with reboots. If Win7 still will not start, return to Recov Tools list, open a Command prompt to type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK # (for Win7 HD)
LIST PARTITION
SELECT PARTITION # (For Win7 partition)
ACTIVE
EXIT

Now return to tools list and run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots to write the MBR to Win7 to start it, then use Step 1 above, posting back screenshot if necc.

Hi, i've been searching this issue on Google with literal no topic about it so i'll just make the first one here:

From a time i have an A4Tech V7 Gaming mouse that works perfect in Windows 7. Since a few weeks ago, after Microsoft deployed a patch on Windows 10, my scrolling wheel stopped working both on softwares and games. After 1-2 restarts it would go away and this kept on for about a week, and i guess after that, another patch was deployed that fixed it. Last night a new patch was deployed that returned the issue and this time, even after 3 restarts the scroll still doesn't work. Is there anything to be done so i don't have to wait anymore for those guys?

Clicking the scroll [Mouse3] works, scrolling up and down is what doesn't work.

A:Scroll wheel doesn't work anymore

Hi, can only suggest general things to do.
Have you tried uninstalling, reinstalling, updating the mouse driver?

Please try following the pattern of actions here:

Yes, it's talking about a Microsoft mouse, but the principles apply- just adapt as appropriate to your mouse.

A:Restore function doesn't work anymore

It sounds as if System Restore may have become corrupted. You can try reinstalling the feature. Here's how:In Control Panel or Windows Explorer, click Folder Options and then View tab
Under Advanced Settings, scroll down and find "Show hdden files and folder." Check the box.
Find "Hide extensions for known files types." Uncheck that box. Click Apply, OK.
In Windows Explorer, find your Windows folder (usually on the C: drive but not always). Navigate to the inf folder and open it.
Find a file named sr.inf
Right click the file and select Install.

Important: This creates a new installation of System Restore, but it will delete any restore points that you had created previously.

Greetings to everyone on the Tech Support Guy forum! As you can probably see I'm new here and I'm making this thread because my uncles router that I tried to open a port on has been driving me insane. Let me first say that I did use the search function and although there were a lot of threads about not being able to open ports, of which i looked at a few, none of them were really helpful for my situation.

Now I'll try to explain the full story and I hope everything will be clear, if you still need some information about anything to help me, feel free to ask. So I tried setting up a Minecraft server which worked perfectly fine after opening the port on my uncles SpeedTouch router. I'm living with my uncle, and the internet connection, router and PC are his, aside from my laptop, which doesn't have much to do with the story though.

This was working for a few days for my girlfriend and me to play on until today when we wanted to play on it again, she couldn't connect anymore. After first trying to restart the connection, thanks to the Open Port Check Tool (on yougetsignal.com) I noticed that the port 25565 required for a Minecraft Server isn't open anymore. So it basically closed itself, because I'm sure I haven't changed anything and my uncle didn't either.
Not much of an issue I thought, so I went back to the router configuration by using the local ip of the computer (192.168.1.254) in the url bar, and I tried to fix it.
