Quicktime stopped playing smoothly

Q: Quicktime stopped playing smoothly

I was going through unnecessary files on my computer, and I deleted some Apple related files that I thought I didn't need. Quicktime stopped working, so I had to reinstall it. Since I'm using Windows XP the newest version won't work, so I had to download an older version. I'm not sure what version I had before I messed it up, I think it was 7.3.0. So I downloaded that, and now it won't play files smoothly that it had played smoothly before I uninstalled it. My settings are the same as far as I can tell.

Windows 8 pro has stopped running smoothly. I don't know what did it 100% but i think it was some application that is supposed to update your drivers for you - yeah i know what a bad thing to do!Anyway now it seems the internet wont connect and when booting into the desktop everything takes ages to load and a lot of apps start not responding when you click on them.I booted into safe mode and reinstalled a lot of drivers and when i rebooted the internet worked again suggesting that it is drivers that are causing problems.I had done a checkdisk and a couple of drives reported minor problems - i think it was free space was wrong or something like that - i certainly never thought it was too bad cos i cant remember lolSfc found no errorsI had troubke with kaspersky 2014 so they recommended to uninstall comodo firewall. I tried to do this as best i could and install zonealarm insteadIm wondering if there is a sata driver that is problematic as im guessing things don't seem to be loading properly???Has anyone got any ideas as i desperately want to rescue my system as ive got a 3tb hd and an ssd filled up with apps and games etc and REALLY dont wanna reinstall everything.I was wondering if there was a way of deleting all drivers and recopy and reinstall them all to see if this solved the problems???I do have a macrium reflect backup from over 6 months ago but I've installed and reorganised the system a lot since then so i wondered if i could copy a backed up windows folder where it k... A:Windows 8 pro has stopped running smoothly

You have too many issues to address at one time IMHO and since your backup is so old, you might want to consider this method. The losses are minimal but make sure you read the tutorial thoroughly:

How to Do a Repair Install of Windows 8 without Losing Anything

Use (the above) at your own risk as a last resort. You always do have that 6 month old backup as an alternative. Good luck.

Hello! for the past few weeks the youtube videos aren't playing smoothly. I tried playing the same video in dailymotion (both at 720pHD) and it plays quite smoothly. The videos at youtube start off well, but after few seconds it lags and then it plays well.. this goes on and on (around 10 times in a video of 3 mins). I tried to lower the quality to 480p, but the problem still exists.
Also, tried disabling the extensions but it still the same! Help please.. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm running Windows XP SP3.
Recently, youtube and online streaming videos have not been playing smoothly, even when fully loaded. It's more like a series of pictures with the audio. This was never a problem until a few weeks ago.
DVDs and other downloaded videos seem to be playing fine, it's just watching online. I have uninstalled and reinstalled shockwave player and flash player numerous times but this doesn't help.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Michael

Is there a way to get WMP 9.00 to play Quicktime .mov files, and if so how is it done?

A:Playing Quicktime .mov on WMP 9 ??

The answer is "maybe".

From the MS Knowledge Base:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992

QuickTime Content (.mov, .qt)
Windows Media Player 9 Series

Apple Computer developed the QuickTime file format to create, edit, publish, and view multimedia files. QuickTime format can contain video, animation, graphics, 3D and virtual reality (VR) content. Only QuickTime files version 2.0 or earlier can be played in Windows Media Player. Later versions of QuickTime require the proprietary Apple QuickTime Player.

In order to play .avi files using quicktime, I needed to download a Xvid component, I picked the first option. The 'read me' file instruction:To install this component, just drag the File "XviD_Codec 1.0 alpha.component" into Library/QuickTime. The Library directory can be found either at your home directory (to install just for the actual user) or at the top-level of your startup volume (this needs an administrator account). DO NOT PUT IN: /System/Library/QuickTime.I followed the instructions, but it's still not working.

Alternatively, you could use VLC to play .AVI files. VLC is kind of like the Swiss Army Knife of media.

Hello, I have a problem with Quicktime in Firefox which has been going on for some time now (even after repeated re-installs.) No what file I view, the audio or video will only play the first few seconds of the file and then just act like that was the total length of the file (in other words, it ends.) However, this does not occur in IE. Is there a way I can fix this problem?

Using Quicktime VR Authoring Studio on Mac OS 9.1 I have created and viewed multiple panos. No problem. On my Windows XP machine I have been able to view QTVR from multiple sites with no problem but when I try to view the ones I have created on my Mac, WIndows throws an error message that the it is "not a file that Windows understands"

A few things that I have already tried:
1. I made sure that within the Authoting Studio the file is set to flatten to data fork.
2. I added the QTVR extension to allow Movie Player to allow it to save the movie as a self contained file. When I save it it get an unknown error message:-1
3. So I dug up an old version of QTVRPlayer and saved as "Make Movie Self-contained" with the "Make playable on non-Apple computers" box checked.
Any ideas?

Hello!

We're having some trouble playing some .mov files that are several years old. We're running 10.4.11 with QT 7.4.1. I'm told a friend of the user was able to play these files on her machine without a hitch; however, she has QT 7.2.

These files were rendered from AfterEffects, in QT format, using Sorenson 3 compression/codec. Under "More Info" for one of these files I have the following info:

Codecs: Flash, TIFF
Encoding software: Adobe Photoshop 7.0

I've also tried playing these files on DivX and MPlayer, no luck. I don't consider downgrading to QT 7.2 to be an option.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

I installed quicktime yesterday. Now, everytime i click a link that used to give me a prompt for Winamp to open, it just decides to let quicktime play it in another webpage. I don't want this to happen. I want to click an mpg file and be prompted to have winamp open it or save it to disk. How do I make this happen again without uninstalling quicktime? I have quicktime set to only play quicktime movies, but it still decides to open up all mpg files in another webpage instead of letting winamp open them. WMV files still work just fine with winamp, it seems to only be MPG files. Anyone know what's going on here?

A:How to stop quicktime from playing movies on webpages?

You should be able to open Winamp, and change settings so that MPG and MPEG files are automatically opened by Winamp (not too sure of the steps, since I don't have it installed).

Quicktime player stays black while playing a video/trailer in Google Chrome.

The music/sound works fine, but the screen stays black.

I upgraded my computer last thursday (17th of June) to windows 7 64-bits (clean install), ever since I have the problem.

Any suggestions to solve this problem?

My laptop:
Alienware M17x;
Q9000, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M SLI

A:Quicktime player stays black while playing a video/trailer in Google Chrome.

Where these videos that played just fine before in QuickTime? And did you make sure you reinstalled all the codecs? 99% of the time if you get a black screen in QuickTime, it's because it's missing the codec for the video. Remember, most "video" files out there are just containers that have an audio file and a video file with instructions to keep them in sync. If QuickTime doesn't have the codec for the video, then it'll only play the audio and have a black screen. Also, you said you are using 64bit Windows. Did you make sure that QuickTime and the codecs you did install went into the 32bit folders, because I don't think it's 64bit yet.

So I've confirmed that it's not just my computer that has issues with quicktime playback in vista. If you have vista+firefox+adblock plus(extension)+quicktime, then you likely will not be able to play embedded quicktime videos (either crash browser or get illegal operations). If you disable the adblock plus in the "add ons", it works fine. Now I'm not sure if the problem is with the quicktime plugin or the adblock plus. For now I've disabled adblock plus and installed adblock instead, not as good, but at least it blocks the evil intellitxt with some configuration. Just thought I'd share what I found since I believe this is a common problem. If you want some quicktime to test your playback, go to apple.com/getamac and view some quicktime videos. I'm not sure if this combination always causes this issue, but it did on a new install of vista as well as on my machine. I know xp works fine when using ff+adblock plus to play quicktime. Any comments welcome to further discuss the cause or if you are having the same problem.

A:Confirmed Problem: Vista+Firefox+Adblock Plus+Quicktime= No Quicktime Video Playback

Read your report...I am not running Quicktime at this time, had the same fault and was gone when I dumped Adobe Flash, sounds like Adblock need to do some revisions.

Hello;

I am not sure what happened to this program. I have a lot of MOV. that I use with quicktime, as well it is needed to view alot of internet things.

today when I clicked on it to open Quicktime I got the error 46: could not load or find the quicktime active X control.

I have tried unistalling, reinstalling, making sure to remove all aspects of Apple software, including Itunes, and registry accounts.

The program installs fine then, when I click on it to execute the program I get the same error.

I then tried to do a system restore, but his has not cured the issue either. I am opposed to bypassing issues and installing 3rd party software, this always leads to leaving some huge error on my computer, so I would really like to address this issue, and figure out how to fix it.

Of course Apple/quicktime, does not offer actual support for their products, which is of course bogus, but still just the same it is a main stream function and I need it.

Any suggestions as to how this can be addressed?

thank you

I have a new PC, the ones i used to burn off my old one would play on any DVD player I had. But when i burn using my New PC it will only play on a computer, I tried it on my friends xbox 360 and it played.
So i was thinking my TV-DVD player is the problem, but then it still plays the old things that i've burned.
I use convertxtodvd to burn the mkv files i have on my computer, I use Nero Recode 2 to copy existing DVD's into copy's.
They all work on the xbox and my PC.

It's not that i desperately need my TV-DVD player to play these things, but if i'm building a DVD collection, i want to know it will play on any DVD player that supports copies. Otherwise I end up with half a collection that will will only play on certain devices and not others that are supposed to support copies.

Hi All

I was running MP9 and a few days ago it refused to play avi's recorded by my digital camera. It will play avi's fromother sources, DVD's etc but not my camera avi's. It playe dthem perfectly until a few days ago.

Same with PowerDVD. It will play everything, no problem, except for these few avi's.

I downloaded and ran GSpot over the suspect avi's to see if there was a codec problem but they all rendered OK and GSpot said they should play OK with the existing setup. Finally I uninstalled MP9 and installed MP10 but there is no change.

The error message I get on MP is "Unknown Error" with a code. Not surprisingly M'soft don't provide much assistance. I see from this and other forums that MP suddenly refusing to play avi's isn't at all uncommon. Can someone please offer suggestions on how/why and how I go about fixing this.

Thanks very much.

A:Media Player stopped playing some AVI's

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the camera software. A codec may have been installed by that installation. Anything unusual in the right-click properties of those files?

A general-purpose codec that will play most avi's is the DirectShow ffdshow:

You didn't open your case at all did yoU?

I know lots of cd-roms come with a cable that connects to the sound card for direct audio, but if you didn't open your case or move it significantly this shouldn't be your problem.

Try going into your device manager and seeing if the cd-rom is still installed correctly. Perhaps SP2 messed it up (if so reinstall the driver)

Hey there,

I have a problem with quicktime, but I cannot remember when it started, as it was quite some time ago...

every time I tried to open quicktime player i got an error message saying:

An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\QuickTime.cpl",Quicktime"

(exactly as I typed it, without closing quotation marks in the first line and then ,QuickTime" added after the closing quotation marks in the second line)

I just tried to uninstall and then reinstall quicktime, but that didn't seem to help.. Now I don't get the error message, but instead absolutely nothing happens.. I do still get the same message though when I try to open the quicktime configuration from the control panel.

(I run Windows XP SP2, but it was a dodgy upgrade rather than clean install, I suspect that might have something to do with it)

I'd really appreciate any help, because this error message has got me absolutely baffled...

EDIT: I just remembered how it all started, there was an unrelated problem with my pc, and the tech guy who I got to have a look at it just restored my pc to an earlier windows restore point (which was created before I installed iTunes). Suddenly I couldn't start iTunes anymore, it just gave me an error message that quicktime failed to initialize, and ever since then I have had this problem..

About four days ago as of the time of writing this my computer stopped playing sound after a restart with updates installed. That is actually not quite true. The volume mixer shows that it is playing sound, but no actual sound comes out of whatever device I plug in. Speakers don't work, headphones don't work. I know the devices themselves work as I have plugged them into other computers and they worked there, but on this specific computer no such luck. It is not muted. The drivers show that they are working properly. I've reinstalled the drivers anyway. I've set the default device to that of my speakers. I have updated everything from BIOS to Chipset.

After that I tried searching for some clue or advice on the internet to no avail. Then I tried the windows troubleshooter and Microsoft fixit tool. Neither could find anything wrong.

The computer came new out of the box with two sound card drivers installed. Which are IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and AMD High Definition Audio Device. Which are both under Sound, Video and game controllers in the device manager. Under Audio inputs and outputs it shows the following: Digitial Output (S/PDIF) (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC), Speakers/Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC ), and Stereo Mix (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC). It is the speakers/headphones I want to use as that is my default device. When I click on those the driver is listed as Audio Endpoint and that the device is working properly.

A:Computer stopped playing sound after update

First thing, check the Sound Panel, Playback section. Your "Speakers" should be set as the default audio playback device. If it has changed to some other device that could be the problem.

Your PC sound "card" (actually a chip on the motherboard) is the IDT High Definition Audio Codec. The AMD High Def is the audio for HDMI. Which is another issue, if you have an HDMI cable plugged in, Windows will automatically change the default audio playback device to the HDMI.

If the playback device is set properly to the "Speakers", try resetting the sound by uninstalling the IDT in the Device Manager (DO NOT also uninstall the drivers). Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will reinstall the sound. If there were some Windows corruption with the sound this will fix it.

I switched OS to Ubuntu for about a week, LoL didn't run well in Ubuntu so I reinstalled windows 8. When i open playback devices all I have is NVIDIA HDMI Output (port 0) and (port 1), both of which show unplugged and disabled. I have disabled and disconnected devices set to show, but those are all that show. I have reinstalled drivers, reinstalled windows, downloaded Realtek, enabled onboard audio in BIOS, but nothing has fixed the problem so far. When I boot into Ubuntu via USB, the audio works fine.

Every time I try to play music in Windows Media Player no sound comes out of my speakers. I'm not sure if its just Media Player, but I'm fairly sure it's not just Media Player.

When this first started, simply turning the volume up a notch made sound come out. But the sound would stop after a minute or so. Also, it has been making my computer freeze up frequently. I've tried playing music on websites like playlist.com and my computer locks up.

This just started happening today. I looked for hardware conflicts and found none. The speakers work fine. I believe it must be some sort of Malware.

Found several similar reports over this and MS's Answers forums with no final resolution/fix to problem. Worse they are dated several years ago and nothing current.

I feel I need to emphasize one-time that this problem only concerns the Startup system sound that plays right after warm or cold boots when the system first arrives at the desktop and _only_ that sound. All other system and program sounds work okay.

Up to 1 or 2 months ago for a couple years now the Startup sound has been playing just fine--then I all of a sudden realized it was no longer playing at all. All other system and program sounds/audio play fine.

1. SFC finds nothing needing fixing.
2. Startup sound check box in Sounds tab is and has always been checked though I do not recall when MS made this a security issue protecting it.
3. Talked to nVIDIA and learned nothing new.
4. Talked to Crucial and learned nothing new.
5. Talked to MS and learned nothing new. They are unaware of problem...even though for some it is a couple years old. MS's best recommendation though, which I might still try at some point because "what could possibly go wrong?" is to run an In-Place Upgrade on Windows 7 which supposedly will restore the OS leaving my programs/data and some customizations(?) in tact.
6. Actual Startup sound wave file apparently resides inside a .dll which iirc is threaded here in sevenforums.
7. I also looked through the Registry searching for "startupsound" and found string i... Read more

Suddenly I can no longer watch movies. Games play, cds play, audio fine. But I put in a movie and it's like there's no disc here. We've watched movies on it for over a year, so I checked multiple movies that once worked. I've followed the troubleshooting, tried to update driver. The wizard could find no better driver than what is already being used. I DO NOT get an error message. I just don't get anything to show up either under My Computer or in Media Center or Media player. This stumps me. I read somewhere "Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398)" was a problem but I even went to add/remove programs and couldn't find that particular update, so I couldn't uninstall that. I have a gateway with a tsstcorp dvd +_ rw mlti format double layer drive and Windows XP Media Center Edition.
Thanks for any help.

A:dvd movies stopped playing - games, cds fine

I have an HP a1540n desktop with two R/W CD/DVD drives and two megs of RAM. Recently both drives stopped showing or copying DVDs. When I tiried to copy DVDs I get a message that advrcntr2.dll is not on this system.

I went on the internet and downloaded this .dll and put several copies in various media players and on my Desktop. Still no success. What should I do next and what might be causing this problem?

Thanks,

I've not long had Vista (Home Premium) and the windows media player that came with it used to play the .ts files that I'd exported from my digibox hard drive. Then - for apparently no reason - Media Player decided that it was no longer going to open the files, not even the ones that it had opened previously. It came up with the cood1199 error, but I don't understand why it's stopped playing them as it used to. It's infuriating. I don't want to have to download another program to play them when Media Player should - as it *did* - play them. Is there anything that I can do to get it to play what it used to play?

Have you tried a system restore back to when you know this worked or is this to far in the past? Have you tried to play the files with something like Realplayer. I know that you want to use WMP long term but this would confirm that it is a WMP issue.

Also found this link if it helps.

Right clicking the icon gets a menu window with a dozen menu choices greyed out except - "QuickTime Web Site" and "Exit". It doesn't seem to be the MySpace QuickTime exploit; I don't ever visit MySpace. Any idea what this is? HJT log below.

So I get TDR and BSOD whenever I play a graphically intensive game. Doesn't have to be much, though. I tried to play Mafia 2 and I got TDR. The same with Dishonored, CS:GO, and a whole mess of other games.
I've already set the PhysX to my graphics card rather than auto, so if you were going to say that, don't.

Note: My GTX 660 is by OC'd by Gigabyte, thought I'd point that out.

A:BSOD/TDR playing Far Cry 3, display driver stopped working.

Erm, this doesn't make sense. You have a Geforce card, so why do I see ATI drivers also loaded? You may wanna do some cleanup of your drivers to ensure you don't have any conflicts. A good way to see loaded drivers is using Autoruns. Don't use it to remove drivers, but to check a list of those intended to load at Windows startup. Also good is to check Programs & Features on control panel and uninstall unnecessary items.

Otherwise, I don't have good data on this. One of the 3 crashdumps present did report that the TDR timeout was caused by insufficient resources to complete a DirectX API call, but I can't ascertain how this happened from just a minidump. Try running Driver Verifier and provide us new crashdumps.

EDIT: I just noticed the ATI crash was from back in Oct, with two other crashdumps from Nov and December. Have you changed your video card recently? I assume you were also getting timeouts from the previous card?

Hello there guys, I am having a real problem with my Windows Media Player 11 playing .avi files.

My digital camera records videos and they have played on my machine with WMP no problem at all until yesterday. When I click on the file to play it it says "Window Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assitance, click Web Help."

I have had had a good around and I can't resolve this problem. The problem seems to have occured since I installed DivX Player, Codec etc.. (the installer package). Since then I have tried uninstalling it to go back to how it was and also tried doing a system restore to the point before but still the same problem.

Don't know what to do but this problem also effect Windows movie maker, it won't player the avi files in there either, please help.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium

I've had this problem since like 2 years and i havent been able to solve it, yes reinstalled OS more than 15 times, DDU drivers, reinstalled drivers, tried beta drivers, tried old driver, cleaned up the dust inside laptop, windowed, fullscreen game, disabled some services, disabled TDR on registry, delay TDR on registry (it just makes windows freeze for the time i put on the registry, example TdrDelay = 10 sec, windows freezes for 10 when TDR happens in dota), reduce dota 2 graphic settings, ccleaner, advanced systemcare, SFC/SCANNOW , verified files, (There was this time where i was messing with my pc trying to fix this issue where i thought ive fixed it because whenever the TDR happened dota 2 would freeze but it would run again like nothhing happened and i could still play but somehow then it didnt last long)

installed new version of dota 2 called reborn and for some reason it didnt crash for some 2 months and now whenever i play this new one it crashes the whole windows and i need to restart PC

There was a BSOD too where i disabled google chrome hardware acceleration or something like that and when i got to a page like dailymotion my computer froze and i had to restart.

The couple of thing i havent tried is Thermal paste because my laptop is very hard to open GPU wise. but i doubt thats the problem because the BSOD from dota started when i recently bought the Laptop like after 1 - 2 weeks

(Some stuff on the ZIP are in spanish, im from mexico)

A:BSOD playing Dota 2, driver stopped responding, etc .....

Please use the tool again, the zip file doesn't have any dump files.
Also, in your windows partition go to the folder windows. There you can find a folder called minidumps, it is the folder where the dump files are saved. Check if there are any dump files in that folder.

Hi,

A:Windows Explorer has stopped working when playing movie DVD

Good Evening Folks:

I am having a problem with Windows Explorer and WMP11. I have the original King Kong movie that I downloaded and burned over a year ago. Every so often I drag it out just for the enjoyment of watching it again. This time, however, when I attempt to play it I get a message telling me that WMP11 has stopped working. If I try to open the files on the disk the message tells me that Windows Explorer has stopped working and will have to restart.
When I first started to dig into this problem I was because I was getting a message telling me that the DEP had stopped working. That has been cured by disabling DEP, but now it is Windows Explorer that stops working. There are also a few other glitches that have appeared such as a language bar that appears on the screen whenever the UAC window opens and an internet connection that will not run in protected mode even though that function is enabled. I have scoured the net and have seen a number of people who associate this problem with the installation of Vista SP2? If this is the case I will dump SP2 even if it means reinstalling the O/S.
I'm running a 32 bit Vista Home Premium O/S.
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

I've encountered a mysterious problem that has drastically affected my enjoyment of my computer. Please help if you can.

Starting yesterday, I noticed that most video files (about 90%) stopped playing correctly on my computer. This occurs whether the video is streaming from an internet source or played directly from a file on my hard drive.

The affected files are .avi, mpeg, mpg, wmv, asf

When played the files are slow and choppy and the sound is full of pops and cracks. Video files without sound and audio files seem unaffected.

This occurs when files are played through Windows Media Player (10) or RealPlayer (v.10). Quicktime Player appears to be unaffected. The same file will play fine if it has an extention QT can handle.

The files themselves have not been corrupted. I was able to prove this because I can play the very same files remotely with the same programs (WMP10 and RP10) from a second computer on my Home Network.
Also, files streamed from the internet are affected as well. For example if I try to watch a news video or a moive trailer the sound is significantly degraded when played through WMP or RealPlayer.

So, something has changed with my windows setup that is affecting the way the computer handles these files.

I had a virus issue that I dealt with by running many spyware and virus programs yesterday. I don't think it's related but I can't help but wonder

Who had the brilliant idea to discontinue the log off sound ?

I ran updates on 4/16 on both this desktop and a laptop. The laptop (Windows 7 Pro) had many more updates but is working fine. The desktop (W7 Home Premium) is having two main issues. I did not set a restore point but I wanted to ask the pros because it has been driving me nuts.

Youtube and Netflix will not play.
At first I thought it was firefox but it is in IE as well. I went through numerous steps in Firefox to try to get it work. I even tried installing the 64 bit version which did not fix it. (Currently it is uninstalled). Both players will load the video, it is buffering but only the first frames shows. If I try to skip ahead normally it locks up. If I go to you tube in IE right now, it will just freeze, possibly because I've uninstalled all flash now. But the issue before was the same, the video loads just not advance the frame. I did not do additional troubleshooting in IE as I haven't used it in years just was testing.

Next some programs will not load even though they execute. This does not coincide exactly with the updates as it started happening on the 19th.

For example, Steam will execute (from start menu) but it will not launch.
Also, my favorite game-- a short cut on the desktop-- will not launch. It will also not launch from the source on C:. It will flash a second of it's launcher and usually a screen immediately loads but it also just sits in the Processes screen. I tried launching as admin and disabling antivirus. I'm looking into installing Windows 7, however, I do have one question:
Will it run smoothly on my system?

First off, here are my specs, (fresh off Dell's Documentation and dxdiag):
- Dell Dimension 3000
- Intel(R) Pentium 4 Processor (2.8 GHz)
- Intel(R) 865 GV Motherboard
- Intel(R) 82865G Graphics (Extreme)
- DirectX 3D V9 (tested, passed)
- 1.25GB DDR (1GB DDR PC3200 400MHz) (256MB DDR 2700 333MHz)
- SoundMax AC97 Sound Blaster (Audio)

I've ran the Upgrade Advisor and I passed except they say my Graphics Card "isnt supported". I have looked online and actually around this forum, and people are saying that my graphics card, does, in fact, work after Windows Update, and others say it does not. I do want Aero to work, so thats one of my questions; does my Graphics Card work?

My second question; Will my system run reasonably smooth?
I'm looking for multi-tabbed web browsing, iTunes in the background, etc; your average home user.

Thanks, I hope I get some decent responses. I would like people who are actually running Windows 7 (who isn't on this forum), and perhaps someone who's running it in a setup like mine. I'm no begginer. I do know a lot about computers, so feel free to to use advanced terminology, etc.

Thanks.

A:Will 7 run smoothly on my system?

Install a better graphics card and add more memory and it will run fine. The minimum ram for Win 7 is 2GB, anything less will severely impact performance. Likewise a low performing graphics card will give you a performance hit, sometimes severe.

I had the same problem with my Dell Precision 370. I replaced the video card with a reasonably cheap Nvidia 256MB Quadro FX 3400/4000 and upgraded ram from 1GB to 4GB. System runs like a dream.

Hi. [First of all, mods please move this to the appropriate forum if ever I'm wrong in putting it here thanks] I have been having windows vista for a while now, probably more than 6 months, and I didnt have this problem before. I play a certain mmorpg, which is not really graphically demanding, and it used to play smoothly up until this past few days. Now whenever I play the game, it looks like the a stop-go motion, like something else is running or the computer is having such a hard time running the game and ruins the gameplay experience. Other people call it choppy graphics, where it used to be (for example) 60fps now seems like its 20fps. I have not installed anything out of the ordinary, have loads of hard drive memory. I also checked the task manager, and it shows no other application running. Sad thing is, even if i set the mmorpg game to 800x600 resolution, first it will run smooth, then it will go choppy chop once again.. I never had this sort of problem up til now. Please help.

Hello fedalanda,

So recently I've been having this really annoying and awkward fps drop in games, which are supposed to run smoothly on my laptop. I can't recall when it started, so I do not know if some software or driver I installed has something to do with this. I read somewhere that it might be the graphic drivers. I recently updated my graphic drivers to the latest ones, but the problem still persists. I was thinking I should roll back to much older driver, but not sure if that has anything to do with the problem or maybe it's a virus or something, although I did a system check and there was no virus or anything detected. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials.

Games, that should run without a problem, but lag even when I lowered the graphic: League of Legends, Need For Speed:Hot Pursuit.
Super Mario also started lagging. It did not lag before and neither did League of Legends, although I am not sure about Hot Pursuit.
What is strange is that those games lag and games like Mass Effect 3 and Dead Space 2 don't. That's what made me think that it might be the drivers, making certain games lag and others-not.

Dear all,

My Hardware specs are as follows:
- Processor: Intel core i7 2630QM
- RAM 4 GB
- System Model: HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook
- O.S.: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- Display: ATI Radeon HD 6770M and Mobile Intel HD Graphics (1.76 GB)
- HDD: Toshiba 500 GB

I'm facing a problem in my laptop in which almost nothing's running as fast and smooth as they should! whether I use Photoshop, or 3Ds Max, or my browsers (Firefox or IE 9), especially when i open facebook it really become slow to respond I dunno why, and even when I open a pic using ACDSee it takes time to launch! Whenever I open a video file (Mostly using VLC or Media player classic) they don't run smoothly and whenever I browse a streaming video via youtube or any other website they almost NEVER run smoothly!

P.s. As I was typing this the browser was running so slow and I stop typing to watch the letters just appearing while I wait to check for mistakes.
Can anyone help please? All my software are up to date except for ACDSee I use an old (3.1) version.

Thanks in Advance.

the issue is certainly not with viruses/malware, as it has already been checked and resolved, by the work of chemist (very nice assistance he gave me, compliments to him!)

A:PC running far less smoothly than before...

One test you can perform is on the hard drive, if only to confirm that it's still healthy in terms of wear-and-tear. Regardless of it's brand, you can test it with Seagate SeaTools. There's a DOS & a Windows version (DOS version is required in cases where Windows either cannot start or is running too unstable to support a drive test without crashing). Get it here: SeaTools | Seagate (click "Downloads" on the page).

When my p3 863 MHz, 512mb system goes to sleep or standby, it freaks out when it restarts and instead of just waking up, it reboots. Usually it gives a message saying the system recovered from a serious error.
There is nothing on this machine that needs to be saved. How can I reset it to simple stable behaviour
such as just after a reinstal without actually having to reinstal?

Thanks all,

Malcolm

A:P3 XP system won't wake up smoothly

If you stop using the hibernate, sleep, standby, etc. power management options and start shutting it down completely when you're done with it and start it up when you're ready to use it, it'll save you some grief.

Go into Control Panel - Power Options, set the power scheme to "Always On", set all other settings to "Never", set the power button to "Shut down", set the sleep button to "Do nothing", turn off hibernation, click Apply - OK, then restart.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Since we're not actually looking at that computer to see what's installed and what's running and what problems it may have, giving you a simple answer and solution to correct its unstable behavior isn't going to happen.

That should be more than sufficient. Windows 7 will likely run quite well.

Hi,

I have been using a 64-bit Windows 7 HP based Acer notebook and sometimes find that the system has become sluggish. The notebook was shipped with 3Gb RAM. Do I need to upgrade the physical RAM to improve performance ? I use multiple browsers simultaneously with many tabs in each open. This seems to drag the system.

Also, I have one 2Gb and one 1Gb RAM module installed (only two modules possible). Would it help if I upgrade with a single 4Gb module replacing my old RAM ?

Regards,

Ramesh

A:How much physical RAM reqd for Win'7 HP (64-bit) to run smoothly ?

Adding more RAM may or may not help.

You need to look at the memory tab of Resource Monitor when the system is sluggish. Unless all the memory is used up at that time (no blue in the graphs), then adding more memory isn't likely to make much difference.

You should look at your documentation or Acer's website to see the maximum RAM supported and the per-slot maximums for your model. You might be able to just replace the 1 GB stick with a 4 GB stick, giving you 6 total.

I'd think Windows 7 runs quite well on 3 GB, but I don't know exactly what load you are putting on it or how many tabs you have open.

Since I can't change CPU, do you think adding more RAM will make the VM run more smoothly?
Or with these specs a VM won't run quite as fast.

Thanks

A:How much RAM should I have to smoothly run a virtual machine?

Adding more RAM will certainly help, Linux will use as much RAM as you can throw at it. However, most Linux will run fairly well in a VM (at least in a VirtualBox VM) with 1 GB or even 512 MB.

So I am looking into replacing my families home modem (Arris TM722 leased by Comcast) with the Arris SURFboard SB6190. I have never replaced a modem before. Should it go smoothly? Just unplug it, take out the battery, disconnect all the cables, put in the new one, connect all the cables, put in the battery and plug in the power and then follow included directions to call Comcast and activate it? The odds of complications, of things not going cleanly and requiring troubleshooting low?

Thanks!

A:How smoothly should a Modem swap go?

Comcast's activation process can be done online. Once you swap the modem (and it takes all its updates) you won't be able to surf. It'll force you to the activation page. You enter your account number and/or username & password and follow the on-screen instructions. From there your modem will take another update and you'll be good.

I've built a new computer and want to have Windows 8.1 Pro on it. I've installed it 3 or 4 times and do some test runs. However, Windows 8.1 Pro always has stability issues; more specifically, freezing at the Welcome/Login screen, freezing at the Restarting... screen and occasionally freezing when just using it normally.

I've partially resolved the freezing issue at Restarting... screen by disabling Turn On Fast Startup. I've tried updating the BIOS to the latest version and installing all important updates (graphics, audio, controllers, etc).

I also have a major slow down at times as well, even though I try to keep the memory clear. This problem is interfering greatly with my proficiency. Please advise as to steps needed to be taken.

I'm using Hp Compaq DC7800 desktop core 2 duo with 2GB of ram.Now I'm planning to upgrade from 320GB to 1tb hard disk (Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5).- Would it run smoothly on system?- Is this a good choice or 512 GB?- This one or another model of hard disk of some other company?

A:Would the Seagate 1 TB hard disk run smoothly on my pc?

Hi: A 1 TB drive will work fine because I put one in my HP dc7800. There is one problem though...This document explains it. http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=3718645&docId=emr_na-c02711513-3 Now, the fact that you are getting a Seagate drive, that may be OK, but I can't guarantee it. I originally planned to install a Western Digital SATA III drive in my dc7800, but it displayed the symptoms in the above document (not detected on start up most of the time). Naturally, I assumed the drive was defective, so I returned it, and the replacement drive did the same thing. Then I came across the above document. I have a HP 8200 Elite (which is a descendant of the dc7800) and it came with a Seagate 1 TB HDD, SATA III (6.0 GBPS). So, I put the Seagate drive in my dc7800 several years ago, and it has worked fine ever since.  I put the 500 GB WD HDD in the 8200 Elite and it works just fine in that model, because it has a sata III controller. So, that may be the only issue you come across.  It is a major issue of course, if the drive doesn't work.

I am talking about CS 1.6

Ever since I had a virus (maybe about 5 months ago lol) my cs hasn't been running as smoothly as it should have before I had the virus. When I first got this pc it was running with absolutely no problems. The game runs about 80-100 FPS but for some reason, it doesn't run smoothly[kind of stutters sometimes, gun has big recoil]. If I rush into a large group of people, my gun starts getting massive recoil and the game starts to stutter. Maybe it has to do with something about a process running in the background? reformat ftw!

if you're not as gungho about reformatting as i am, i would suggest running an adware/spyware/malware removal program(if you havn't already) and see if that helps

oh and a new video card would probably be a nice upgrade when you can afford it. i suggest the nvidia 7600gt it's about the best you can get without your cpu holding you back too much, and it's about $100. just make sure you get the agp or pci-e whichever is appropriate for your motherboard. and maybe should go for some more ram, it will all run better when you do that.

Hello, guys.

I've got a dual core APU processor from AMD, 6GB of RAM, and the GT 520 from Nvidia. I'm aware it isn't a high-end machine, but it's not an old one either. It's a PC from HP (a 2010 model or so) that I bought a year and a half ago.

I can't seem to run CS: GO at over 60 frames in crowded servers--especially in more detailed maps. (20 players total or around that). A lot of people have told me a machine like mine should have no problem with Source-based games, as they can be played on almost anything, but for some reason it does.

I doubt it is any type of malware as these performance issues have always been here. Even after full system scans and a lot of cleansing, so what could it be? Does having a VGA monitor connected to the DVI card with an adapter have anything to do with the matter? Cause that's what I have. What else can it be? Any advice?

Thank you.

Aww jeez, im bad with computers. So i recently bought a new pc because i wanted to get into pc gaming. I got some games off steam and two of them worked fine (left for dead 2 and team fortress 2) but when i played fallout 3 i had some really bad frame rate problems and in gta iv the graphics and framerate were terrible. I havent the foggiest idea about what i need to do or what to upgrade get them working fine, thats why i bought a pc instead of building one. The main game i've been aiming to get on pc is mass effect 2 but i have doubts about if it will run smoothly or at all.

So yeah i guess i just need advice on what sort of things i need to do to this computer to get it to run games smoothly, without having to build a new computer preferably.
