You're going to have to explain yourself a little better........I don't understand what you're trying to do?

Are you trying to run a program,if so it should be in the Program folder.

Hi,

I have a question about Windows 7 Program Files folders. There is a lot of discussion on why the distinct folders are necessary, but I remain unclear about this problem.

Let's say I have a portable 64-bit program whose binaries and dll's arrive in an archive like a .zip package. Will plopping those in the Program Files (x86) folder potentially cause problems for that program?

A:Will installing a 64-bit program in Program Files (x86) cripple it?

Why take a chance? Put them where they belong.

I had to perform a drive swap so that my old installation of windows 7 and all my programs are on one drive, and my current installation is on the other. I would like to know if there is a way to get all of those programs on my current installation, and also recover my preferences, start menu etc.
Specifically when I try to run word or excel I get the message "the Operating system is not currently set up to run this program"
If anyone can help me that would be great, I don't care even if I have to dive into the to fix this but please someone help

A:Installing a program from program files

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

I don't want to give you wrong advice, but I'm fairly certain that unless you cloned the old drive onto the new one you'll have to re-install all your programs on the new hard drive.

The reason you are getting the message you quoted is because it'll be a system registry issue i.e. Windows on the new hard drive can't see Excel on the old hard drive.

I am having a strange problem. When I am installing a software it begins the install but after short time Logitech QuickCam software takes over and installs. I have tried to install several alternative software and same thing happens. I am running on Win XP - SP3, Lenovo T60p.

A:When installing a program another program loads instead

Hello rgislason

Do you have a Logitech QuickCam installed? It sounds like it is not installed properly. Try uninstalling then reinstalling it again and see if that clears things up.

A:Please help installing program

I don't have clue what all that jibberish means, but I have two possibitlities you may want to consider. Before doing either be sure to create a restore point or better yet if you have a backup system like Acronis True Image, create a backup of your current configuration.

First I suggest you exit all running programs except explorer and systray. Then try the install. I have a nice little utlity callled EndItAll that shuts down programs I select for this very thing. If you are interested, it's free download here.

If that doesn't work, try rebooting into safe mode and try installing from there.

A:Installing The Same Program Twice?

The installer has copied entries to the Windows registry telling the installer it is already installed. The only workaround that I know of is to install Windows again (called "dual boot"), run that Windows installation, and then install your program.

Could someone please tell me what this error message means---

C:/ WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

I'm trying to install a card program that I've had on this pc before. It installed and ran fine earlier. The only changes made was SP2.

Thanks in advance.

A:Program not installing

Try this:

Copy the file C:\Windows\Repair\Autoexec.nt to the C:\Windows\System32\ folder. What has happenned is that when you installed SP2, it has deleted this file which is required for certain programs.

If the file doesn't exist in that folder, pop your XP cd into your CD drive and click Start -> Run then type:

expand X:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

replacing X with the letter of your CD drive (I'm assuming it will be D)

So... my system thinks I have a program being installed... when I actually don't, or in reality a program was not completely insatalled. Is there a registry value that determines if an install was incomplete. How do I get around this problem?

Well I uninstall a program that I don't want- (wish I hadn't installed it lol) so I go into the windows uninstaller- and uninstall it. Yay it's gone! Or so I thought... :-(

Well then I wake up this morning and there it is in my status bar (the active icons *bottom right on my start bar, whats that called?*)... So I close out and then go to uninstall it- again. It's not there- so now I have it but it thinks it's un-installed... I have friends that use this program and they don't have problems... Is this a virus caused problem?

Also I go into it's folder via C, Program files, etc- to the program file then the only file that is left is the application folder- so I'm like yah I'll delete it - which I've done before to get rid of pesky files that weren't fully deleted using Windows un-installer- so then it coems up with this error message: "Destination Folder Access Denied- You need permission to perform this action" well I am the Admin on this computer (I'm the only user on it) and well it gives the option of trying again or canceling- I tried again about 10 times lol hoping for the best..

Well how do I get rid of this? I was thinking maybe that the file was somehow in 'use' so if I were to start up in like safemode with only windows drivers etc could I potentially delete it?

Thanks for any help that you can give.

A:Installing The Same Program Twice?

You can't. Most programs will make changes to the registry and copy some files to windows\system\ or to documents and settings\user\application data.

If you want to try the update without changing your current installation at all you'll have to install it on another computer.

If you fear to loose your settings should do decide to uninstall the update, save the corresponding program files folder in a separate folder before you do the update. If you lost some settings once you removed the update, replacing your files with these ones should do.

I am 100% new to this forum and windows 8 but have set up my new laptop with 4 users for family but only want to allow 1 member of the family and myself to be able to down load and install programs which gives me two problems M

My first problem is I don't want to allow my daughter who is the other admin to be able to over right the setting I have set up for the grandkids and allow them to down load and install programs as she will give in to there persisted pleads of "please let me install this game" for an easy life. So can this be solved ?
My second problem I have come across is when my daughter(other admin) or myself installs a program it also appears on the kids screens. So is there a way to install a program for 1 user only? I use programs for my work which are no use to anyone else within the family.
hope I have placed this into the right forum but I am going to post the second part within another forum

cheers

I have Windows XP, and have been using my Quicken 2005. I had to reinstall Quicken 2005, however this time I am unable to - due to getting 3 dialog boxes appearing.

The Windows Installer box appears and goes thru the process and then I come to the program agreement which I accept. Then after that, a dialog appears stating the following:

"Setup could not find a file on the specific path or disk"
"Please check that the proper disk is inserted or specify a new path"
"Unable to locate file C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\pft85.tmp\Disk1\Quicken2005.msi
Then if I wish to retry then another dialog appears as stated:

"Error 1706 no valid source could be found for product Quicken 2005. Windows Installer cannot continue."

Then upon closing another dialog box appears:

"Err: -1603 fatal error during installtion. Consult Window Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for information"

What could have happen and how can I correct this? Thank You

I am not familiar with your program, but I had a thought. Many times when something does not work properly, a notice is given. Many times that notice is not really indicative of the situation and this may be one of those cases. But, if it isn't, it would be my guess that the program your bought, has EULA, indicating that it can be installed only once, or in only one machine, similar to an OS OEM version, can this be a possiblility?

Why do some programs which I download try to install to Program Files as is the norm, and others try to install to Program Files (x86), if they're all compatible with Win7 x64, and some are even specific to Win7 x64?

Is there any harm in deleting the (x86) from the attempted destination folder when I download, so that I don't have two folders for my downloaded programs? I'm all about consolidation.

Thanks!

A:Installing to Program Files (x86)?

Some programs come ready to be compatible for x64 and x86. Since windows 7 can be either, it installs both sets, just in case, to reduce compatibility issues.

A:Problem Installing Program

Insert the Windows CD into the CD drive (Stop it if it auto runs)
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:

Also remember to substitute your CD drive letter in the sections in RED
It is probably easier to copy and paste the commands below remembering to hit enter after each one.
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com
exit

If you have followed the above steps, your program should now install ok.

Let us know how you go.

Run a good anti virus scan and run a scan with this:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes

You probably have some nasties that causes this thing to return.

You may also want to uninstll it with revno, the next time it is on your hd and then clean with ccleaner.

Just a hunch on my part, I doubt if it was uninstalled, completely. Programs do not just keep reinstlling by themselves.

I had to reformat my computer recently. I just reinstalled paint shop pro 7. Only this time when I clicked on paint shop pro 7 to open it for the first time, a box popped up that looked like the attached picture:
I didn't know what to click, since that had never happened before when insta
lling paint shop pro, so I clicked on desktop. Well, then I had all these folders on my desktop: Brushes, Frames, Gradients, Patterns, Shapes, Styled Lines, Textures. And one icon called PCache01.JDB.
I tried going into paint shop pro and then preferences, and file locations, and there trying to change where paint shop pro locates these files. At the bottom of this box it listed C\Documents and Settings\Kathy\Desktop\ and Tubes, or Patterns, Textures and so on as the Paint Shop Pro default system directory for this file type. And when I tried to change it, it wouldn't change at the bottom, and the files still remained on desktop.
So now I had a problem, and couldn't get it fixed. When I tried to delete the folders on my desktop, then reopened psp, the folders reappeared on desktop.
So I ran an .exe called ZapPSP.exe and totally removed psp from my system, registry and all reminants. Then I reinstalled it.
Now back to the start again. When I click on psp 7 to open it for the first
time after installing it, I get a box that pops up that looks like this (See

I may be posting this in the wrong spot....if so I hope someone reads it that can help.

BACKGROUND: AmiPro 3.0 is a Lotus program designed for Windows 3.5. According to Lotus, it will not work in any newer Windows programs. However, that is wrong. I use it daily in WIN98 and WIN2000. Today I installed it in WinXE and it worked fine.

PROBLEM: Now I need to install it in Windows VISTA, as I have 1000's of files I need to be able to access. The program is on 3.5 disks. There is no A drive on the computer I need it on. I tried copying each disk and labeling them as Disk 1,2,3 etc. on a Flash drive, then trying to install as if they were single disks. Didn't work.

Can someone please help me? I know it can be done, buy I don't know how. Lotus was bought out by IBM, so you know how much help they are!

A:Need help installing AmiPro 3.0 program

why not purchase a floppy drive? They're cheap around $10.

also Vista has many software incompatibilities -- expect some. If it works, you're lucky.

also- posting your email address in a public forum is very foolish, unless you like spam.

I have the following files: an nfo file, 21 files named *.r00, *.r01 etc, an sfv file and a rar file which I have extracted...there are now a bin file and a cue file in an extracted files folder. What on earth do I do next? Please can someone help me with step by step instructions for a complete dummy !! Thanks.

Alright so like many people i'm dual booting many operating systems. Here are the options i came up with:http://www.funduc.com/app_mover.htmApplication Mover --- Haven't tried it yet...but not too sure it that would work. And something i found here: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12546_102-0.html?threadID=285886Where basically this is quoted from what the user posted:Not necessarily. I setup three partitions on the same Raid-0 disk array:1 - 20GB - XP Pro2 - 40GB - Vista Ultimate 64 Bit3 - remaining space - Programs.Change the drive letters using disk management (Vista and XP both see their install drives as C:) for Programs to the same letter to reduce confusion (E: for me.)Then install all your software in XP, changing the install folder for each setup to E:\Program Files. Reboot, and repeat the install in Vista, again pointing the setup to E:\Program Files. I installed 40 different programs this way, and only four did not work when installed this way (Norton I.S. being one.) For those, I uninstalled in Vista, and re-installed into E:\Program Files (x86)\. Thus, 60GB of installed programs were only installed once, and work fine from both ... Read more

A:Installing program once, using on dual OS?

<<Basically to where they both look like they are installed on that OS but really it's only been installed into one location.>>

I can only tell you...Windows (any version) is not set up so that a totally different version can run programs not natively installed on that system.

As for the excerpt link you provided...I don't believe it. BTW...if you count, he did install programs in both Vista and XP.

You see...it doesn't matter what hard drive the programs are installed on...the settings and registry entries are on the O/S where the program is installed, no other place.

No registry entries and no settings...that program cannot run from that O/S. Users can look at the files but that program won't run if it's not properly installed.

I could be wrong about this one (I'm dense much of the time)...but I don't think so, see what others think.

Reboot and try again, only this time it says "An installation is still in progress, please finish it before proceeding" but I dont know how since it doesnt show up in Task Manager or anywhere. Reboots dont seem to clear it. My questions are;

A:installing program from flashdrive

there is more to a program than just the part you copied. When a program is installed, there are changes made to the registry and other places. just transfering the program wont work. you also need to tell your computer how to use the program. That info is beyond my expertise. I do believe there are programs out there to transfer programs and data between computers so that they do work.

If you load the CDROM and just wait, without clicking on anything, does windows ask you how to play/open the CD? If so select "Open to view Folders" (or similar) and look for a file called 'setup' or 'install'. If you find this double click it and it should run the program installer.

There is a specific software that i would like to install to the Server ans to let it run on all the computers on the network. So,instead of installing it on each computer (time consuming) i need a way to install it on the server and let it run on each other computer.

A:Installing program to server

Copy software to a folder on the server
Share the folder over the network
Map the folder as a drive on the workstations
Run the software on the workstations.

This is pretty basic networking.

The software has to be set up so that it can be shared in that way. In most cases you will probably have to install the software on the hard drive and share just the data files over the network. The application has to have that capability.

Aren't 64-bit programs supposed to install into the Program Files folder not the x86? I thought this one was for 32 bit folders.

A:64-bit iTunes installing in Program Files (x86)?

Hi,

Don't worry about it. Let it install into the Program Files(x86) folder. This is correct. Do not try and force it into the Program Files folder. The reason for this is because some 64bit application are actually only 32bit applications that are compatible with 64bit computers. Windows detects this and puts it in the x86 folder. This is all perfectly normal and iTunes should work perfectly on your computer. If you have any more problems, just post back.

Richard

EDIT: The only part of iTunes that is properly 64bit are the CD burning drivers.

Hello, I'm back, I'm afraid.

I've had a little problem and it seems my Windows XP OS has got some errors but I don't know how to fix it.

One I've had is when I've tried to install/reinstall WM Recorder which installed fine in the past, but I now get the following message when I try to install it:

"Encountered a sharing violation while accessing [File path/File name]."

I've been in touch with WM Recorder support and they tell me it's a Windows error and not a program error. I am using a home, not work, computer and I'm the only user.

Another problem I've found is I've been playing one of my games and while playing a message popped up saying that it couldn't access a file and that it might be read only etc. and I think this is linked.

The only thing I can think of is a Windows Repair with my Windows CD. Is there another easier way to fix these errors?

If the password was left blank, then you don't have to enter any password when you try to log as the administrator. Just select the administrator account (or type "administrator" as the user name, depending on the way you log on) and press ok.

If there's a password, then ask the person who installed XP on that computer about it.

Retry to install your program when logged as an admin and tell us what happens.

There is something weird about my computer, when I install something new like Mozilla Firefox 4, I go check in the "All Program" list and it doesn't show and I thought it was normal till I installed something new today and when I went and check the program it wasn't there however it does show up in the "Add or Remove Programs" when I go uninstall it, so i was wondering does anyone know how to fix this problem?

A:Installing new program doesn't show

I don't know what to fix...but a work-around would be to simply drag a shortcut to the .exe to the All Programs list.

Some programs, when installing, ask if you want an icon there, rather than installing one by default.

Hello,

My operating system is Windows XP Professional 2002.

I have downloaded a Java SDK program from the Sun website. The .exe installer is on my desktop. When I try to install it, I get the following error message:

Error: The '(null)' temporary directory is not a writable directory

Try rerunning this application with the following usage: 'filename.exe' -tmpdir <temporary directory>

Do you know what is happening here?

Thank you in advance

I'm trying to installing client software for a AS400 on a Windows 2000 machine on a user profile but it doesn't seem to work. I tried installing it in the the administrative profile and it installed and works fine in the administrative profile, but nothing comes out in the users profile. No icons or anything. I've tried giving the user temporary administrative rights and installed it from there, but that didn't work either. I read on one post about having to edit the registry for some programs to work, but i don't know what changes need to be made. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to make it work?

Hello everyone, hopefully here I can get assistance with my little dilemma...Okay, so this is my first pc with Windows Vista. While installing one of my graphics programs, I got a strange error about halfway through installing.Error opening the file for writing: C:\Windows\System32\libeay32.dll Now, I checked the System32 folder and the dll file is there- it's not "Read Only". Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

A:Strange Error While Installing A Program.

Have you checked to ensure the program is current and compatible with windows VISTA.

It would help if we knew the programs details - version, etc.

Have you checked for an update/upgrade?

Doing a re-install of Flight Simulator X and get this notice at beginning of installation:

1: Allusers property is not 1-this MSM cannot be used for a per-user or fallback to-per-user installation.

I have no idea what this means. Everything I found on Google seems to be oriented to specific programs. Can anyone help? Thanks.

So the other day my laptop wouldn't boot up, and ever using every other resource, I eventually had to put Pro over, 'cause I needed it in the first place. But now I have all my old programs still on there (since it wasn't a clean format), and now some programs don't work. I'm not sure why this is happening at all. Some programs still choose to work. Winamp (for example) displays a lot of .dll errors, and then it ends up running anyways. Other programs choose not to work. Any ideas or reasons why..?

A:Installing Pro Over Home Program Error

Without a more detailed explanation of exactly which programs, and what errors. My initial thought is file associations are broken. Meaning that what applications and dependencies were in place before are no longer in place. I would uninstall and reinstall those failed applications and programs to reestablish the file associations. This is just a thought with what information you have provided so far.

If you can give us more detailed information we can better asses the precise nature of the problem/s.

Can someone tell me when performing a clean install at what point would install the Intel VIIV program? It seems that thats kind of critical and maybe it's not but my processor doesn't seem stable at times Does this make sense to anyone or have anyone else had this problem? I have a Dell XPS/410 running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, with a Intel Core Duo E6600 2.40GHz. processor. I realize there are a great deal of things that could probably cause erratic behavior. I have 2 Gigs of memory and most if not all my software programs are compatible and I keep my computer system clean from viruses, spyware and I defrag quite often. HELP! Thank you in advance.

We currently running Windows XP Home on our 2 Pc's at home. Four people use the PC's and we each have our own logons.

Is there a way so that when my son installs new software, (he seems to install about 10 new programs per day), it will ONLY populate his program list on his logon and NOT the program list for the other 3 users of the PC ? It is very frustrating

I notice that some installations ask if there will be a single or multiple users of that program, but what I would really like is to be able to be selective EVERY TIME.

Your help will be appreciated.

A:Installing program on XP for single user

I think the best way is to manually do it as I think there no way in stopping it happing.
Open C:\Documents and Settings you will see a All users folder look in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
If you copy all there and move to each users C:.......\Start Menu you can delete it from All users start menu folder and start to clean up your own menues
1)summary copy C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
2)paste to every users C:\Documents and Settings\Everyuser\Start Menu
3)delete whats in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
4)clean up your start menu

hope this helps
