The DC Jack is broken. This DC Jack is where you plug in the AC adapter. The jack is soldered to the motherboard, and It can be replaced without having to replace the motherboard

My wife's laptop has stopped working. She tells me that when she switched it on there was a screen which said Windows was closing down because there was a threat to the computer, possibly due to a recent update, or something like that. By the time I reached the computer this message had disappeared leaving a whiteish slightly shimmering screen.
I tried switching off and restarting but after about 15-20 seconds the whirring stopped and the computer did nothing else.
I tried to start in safe mode by tapping F8 with same result
I tried to start in safe mode holding F8 down, same result.
During the time the computer is switched on the lights flash amber a few times then green, this is repeated at regular intervals.
I would be grateful if someone can help for she seems to hold me responsible for losing all her photographs (the main purpos of this computer).

I recently purchased a used Dell Laptop running WIndows 98 SE. It came with an Ethernet card and is enabled. When I went to sign on to the internet, it says it can't find my modem. I go under other devices and listed is PCI Ethernet Controller and PCI MUltimedia Audio device. There are yellow question marks next to each. I look up the ethernet controller and tells me that a driver is not installed. I attempted to reinstall and it says it can't find a driver.

How do I get this ethernet card to work?

Under PCMCIA Socket is listed a Texas Instruments PCI-1225 CardBus controller. Does that mean something?

Thanks again for everyone's help.

I reformatted a Dell Optiplex GX110 with Windows XP Pro. Now I can can't get NetZero dialup to work. When I look in the Device Manager the is a big yellow questions mark by Other Devices > PCI Modem. It appears there is no driver for the modem. I have no idea what driver to download because I don't know what kind of modem it is. *sigh* I've been messing with it for 5 hours and have now started crying. I'm not joking, I really am crying. None of my games will work. I took some advice of a forum because I couldnt get Perfect World to work and changed something in the registry to do with the port. Now no game will work and i would change it back but i dont know what it was previously.
My system restores wont work, wont even undo, and theres only one days worth there now. I dont know how to do a utilities reg scan which I think may be what I need to do, I dont know if its in my pc or on my XP disk. I cant use the disk because I dont know how to find my product code and the person I bought it off has gone to Cyprus .

I've done a Drwebcureit but really I need instructions for a 2 year old and I think this has happened since my last one. I had a Win32 Trojan in the other day and Vundo got rid of it I think, maybe its got something to do with that, maybe its still lurking around. Hi everyone,

I recently bought a new Dell laptop Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 64-bit, Pentium(R) Dual core CPU T4200 @ 2.0GHz (2CPU's), 4096MB RAM. The graphics card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330

The main problem is that the Sims 3 game wont load on it. I put it in and I can hear it whizzing round however nothing happens and it doesnt recognise it. There are no error messages or anything.

I have used the game on a previous Dell laptop and it worked fine so the game is alright, also, I have played other games on my new laptop and its fine. On the other hand it doesnt recognise certain DVD's either. I thought the spec of my laptop was adequate for the Sims 3 but I could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated!

My laptop shuts down at random intervals--although I think it is more based on the heat coming from the power than a Windows error. I have taken the battery out and just use it with the plug. Also when I try to do a disk cleanup it hangs up at the compress old files part and does not move past that and then usually shuts down. I ran a full McAfee scan yesterday and nothing was found. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been asked to look into a problem with a Dell inspiron 1150 laptop concerning an intial BSOD error which is intermittent and has happened twice and only twice in the last week according to its owner.

I witnessed the error today but unfortunately did not note any particulars of the error. What I did notice was that the error happened when the power was supplied by the AC adaptor. The hard drive emitted a continuous clicking noise as if it were trying to boot after and at the BSOD. On turning the laptop over to its underside with the BSOD on screen, I noted that the fan was still.

On the BSOD, on pressing the power on button with power supply in, the BIOS reports that there is no bootable device and does not provide any access to a HDD menu in setup. On removing the power supply jack and rebooting from the battery pack, the laptop boots perfectly.

While writing this post, the laptop has emitted two click type noises and the screen has frozen.
I am now of the humble opinion that there is an overheating problem here since the underside of the laptop is warm and the fan has stopped - - at present the laptop turns on then swiftly back off again regardless of where the power is sourced.

I have advised the owner to purchase a cool mat to alleviate the heat build up since there is a paltry sized fan supplying air flow to the components.

Is this a common problem with Dell inspiron laptops, all laptops or is there a fundamental hard drive problem approaching. I w... Read more

A:Laptop Dell Inspiron 1150 - Hard Drive Error Vs Overheating

In this case I would call Dell tech support they may be of some help and have them check the part number of the AC Adapter for the unit. It may be the wrong one. If the unit boots which apparently it does I suggest until you verify the proper power supply that you do not use the pwoer supply, if the polarity is wrong for the computer and I think it is there could be damage to the computer, the noise you hear from the hard drive is probably the hard drive running backwards or trying to.

As for the BSOD if you can get the error message for us and/or Dell tech support it would be most helpful

I had a cable modem (motorola Surfboard S5120) set up to my Dell Desktop, but my hard drive failed the other day from a power outage, so I thought I would just connect my cable modem to my Dell Inspirion laptop?but it's not working. I connected the cable modem to the computer (it has windows XP) and it said that it installed it- I also installed using the installation disk. The user guide on the installation disk said that you should go to START, RUN, CMD, and then type in IPCONFIG. Nothing shows up for my Cable Moden. If I try to open Internet Explorer or anything- it wants to dial-up, but that's what my dad has been using this laptop with.

Anyone have any ideas- I think I have tried every button on the computer- Internet Options, Modem Options, etc. I even tried to connect using an ethernet connection instead of the USB..

hi i just got a new laptop today im using steam it says i need to download flash player ive installed it looked it up on add and remove programs but i cant use it and it wont run please help

A:Adobe flash player wont work on my new dell xps 15 laptop

Hi Rambo,

Did you ever find the Flash Player in the Add/Remove programs view?
Please uninstall the Flash player, reboot the machine, then download and reinstall it again.

Is it steam that isn't recognizing the Flash Plugin? Because the Flash plugin is only really used in the Browser-view of steam and shouldn't affect it's functionality in any other way.

If both are installed and problem persists after reboot, also Repair steam from Add/Remove programs after Flash has been installed, to make sure that Steam knows it's installed from the start.

Otherwise get back to us with more information, what error codes you get, where it won't load etc etc.

I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. So I've checked the share option on my dialup connection. It changed my LAN connection to and my subnet to Great. But nothing is getting an IP address over wired or wireless(I've tried a switch and a wireless router{dhcp off}) now, nothing. In networking and sharing I've set the switch to private and network discovery is turned on. nothing.
ipconfig /all says DHCP isn't enabled for some reason and it says auto configuration is enabled, what ever that means.
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Ultimately I want to set this up to my wireless connection like I did on XP for accessing the internet through my wireless router. But I can't even get ICS to work through a switch right now

I sure need your help on this! lol. I have a home built computer. It is about 6 years old.
The OS is XP Pro, 2 gig of Memory, 200gig WD hard drive, Asus P5AD2 Premium Motherboard. Here is my problem. I replaced the Power Supply that was in it. I replaced it with a Zalman Heatpipe Cooled 600 Watt Power Supply. All I did, is unplug the old PS, and remove it, then, put in the new one, replugged it, turned on my computer and it acts like
it is going to come up... the PS fan is running, a green led light on the motherboard is on, but nothing shows up on the monitor. The monitor power is on, and I have checked the monitor connection to the compter and it has a good connection. So, I thought maybe the new PS was defective or something, so I decided to just put the old power supply back in it, because it was running just fine before, I only wanted to replace it because it was kinda noisey and I wanted a quieter one. After putting the old Power Supply back in, I powered up the computer and it now is doing the exact same thing that the new Power Supply did. The computer lights and fans are all working but nothing is showing on the monitor. I checked to make sure that the cable and power hookup on the hard drive that has the OS on it is connected good, and it is. I am lost on what to do next. I hope someone here can help me please.
Thanks very much,

I just built a new HTPC, put Windows 8.1 on it, had RDP working fine for days. Even out of my house with port forwarding. Once I got everything where I wanted it, the last step was to change the port for security. I changed the registry Port Number (at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control, Terminal Server, WinStations and RDP-Tcp), to a 5 digit number starting with 13 so its within the limits (also, I used to use the same port previously with Windows 7). Restarted and I could not connect. It did not work. So I tried putting it back to 3389 and its broken now too. I have a laptop on 8.1 also and changed it at the same time, now I have the same issues. I have tried everything I can think of. Check and even turned off the Firewall, used netstat -a and it seems to be listening on the correct port.
It seems to me there is something else at play here. Can anyone help me? This is at a bad time since I have leaving town for a few days and need access, I have to use VNC.
Help please.

FYI, I posted this exact same question here and have gone through some diagnostic steps to no avail:

I can't get the driver software for my modem to load into the machine. The modem was working perfectly till I installed an ethernet card and its software. The ethernet card seemed to be working ok. (I'm setting this old 486 up for my kid who is in grad school...she just needs it for word processing and email). I tried to get online to download drivers for a printer and found that the modem wouldn't work anymore. When I tried to start my ISP, the error message said that the com port was already busy. I assume that this had something to do with the ethernet card being recently installed. I removed the ethernet card and its driver, and then removed the moden and drivers. I then started the computer without the modem installed, shut it down, put the modem card back in the computer, and restarted it, therby letting Windows find the newly installed modem. Hi, I searched around for an answer but couldn't find one.

My problem is that my old router was starting to fail, so I decided to upgrade to a Netgear WNR2000

It worked perfectly wirelessly, with great signal and never cut out, unlike my old one which cut out every 5 minutes, literally.
Here is my old one A D-link DI-524. It never had a good connection.

So, my new router I bought, the WNR2000 worked wirelessly, but did not work wired, as in on the main computer which has the modem connected to it. The modem works fine when I connect it straight to the computer but doesn't work when trying to send signals to the new router, it seems to only send them to the old one.

Then I went and bought a cheap router from ebay, the listing has ended now, but it's here And that wont work at all, wired or wireless.

I know/think the routers are fine because I can connect to the home network, but it gives no internet connection.

Any help? This is really puzzling me. Oh and the modem we have is one we got from NTL, who are now Virgin. My only thought is that the modem is incompatible with the new routers. But it seemed to work wirelessly with my Netgear, but not wired at the same time... It's very confusing...

Now i tired to config, Modem into brigde mode but everytime the internet light goes out. My connection is pppoe. The router is set up DHCP.
Now am not an expert but i had no problems setting up the network with my old modem.
Now am i doing something wrong (which I knowi am but dont know what) or can ISP know when you are using a router and want you to pay extra to have a network. I tired to config modem and router Again .........I need HELP!

I have Win XP PRO

A:new dsl modem wont work with router

Can't find anything about that modem. "Now i tired to config, Modem into brigde mode" makes me think that maybe it is a modem/router combo. Is it? If so, and you can't get it into bridge mode you can daisy chain the routers, but make sure that they do not use the same LAN subnet. Or you can configure the 2nd router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point.

Hi... When I logged onto my XP this morning and attemped to dial up, I was told that my user name and password were incorrect, When I went into connections to check it it was 16 characters long. My password is only 5. I tried repeatedly to change it but it just changes back so I can't dial up. I've run all the usual spyware programs as well as checking the hijack log. There's nothing new or unusual. Does anyone know what might be causing this or what I can try ? Thanks !

A:Dialup Password Changed

The 16 letter password thing is nothing to worry about, this is simply a security measure in XP designed to make ti harder for someone to guess your password.

As for the error, this can be caused by a few things, but is usually a corruption in the connection. You should try making a new connection by going to Network Connection and clicking on Make a new connection (although you will need to know your ISPs telephone number)

If that doesnt work you can try a hyperterminal test to find where the problem is, this site will explain how. The site gives two methods, connecting through the modem (using hyperterminal to dial a POP number) and through the Comm port (using ATI commands). The using ATI commands shows how to start off the process, but ends there, to finish it off, type in

press enter and type

atdy(then your ISPs POP number)

press enter, you will then ne asked for your username, type it in an press enter, and then do the same for the passowrd (do not be worried if the password does not appear as you type it)

If the connection works on the first past (connecting with the POP number) then the problem is within windows. If it doesnt work, but the AT commands do the modem needs to be reinstalled. If both fail then you should contact your ISP

Hello all,
Wanted a second opinion on a Dell Inspiron 1150 lcd not working. Friend brought it to me and said the monitor had stopped working. When you hit the power button the notebook spins up and sounds like it is running but nothing happens on the screen at all.

I tried hooking up an external monitor and hitting FN +F8 to toggle the video between the CRT and LCD but its not working. I tried shining a flashlight on the screen to see if maybe the backlight had stopped working but can't see anything with that either.

I also flipped it over and removed the back panel for the video card / lcd connection and made sure it was seated correctly. Nothing is working. The one thing I find strange is that when you turn it on, the power button itself does not light up, but the lights on the front are working and I can hear the drive spinning.

When I hook up the power cable to the back of the laptop though, the battery recharging light never comes on and the other lights go dark. Thinking maybe a bad motherboard?

Any second thoughts? Thanks in advance for advice / opinions.

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 LCD

Possible bad video card; but, the fact that the power light doesn't turn on worries me that it is something worse.

I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1150 Cpu from a 2.6 celeron to a 3.2 P4 mobile cpu.
the machine booted fine and worked fine for some time.
though after a while it shut down due to a over heat and now when i boot the screen is blank,
the fan comes on , the hard drive starts and shuts down then the fan stops.though the power light stays on.
I reinstalled the 2.6 and everything is as it was before the upgrade.
I know this 3.2 should work because through research I found that others have used a 2.8 P/N SL725 with no problems
and the 3.2 P/N SL77R both have the same specs.
I am at a loss.
**note** I have up dated the Bios to the latest A07, updated the chipset. its a fresh install of Windows xp pro OS with all
the updates... I thought i might have cooked the CPU (3.2) and ordered a new one.installed and got the same results at boot up.

This may be a simple case that you forgot to power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) the modem when switching devices. Otherwise, ...

Reset the router to factory default settings.
Unplug modem and router and shut down computer(s).
Connect modem to router's WAN (Internet, Modem) port.
Connect computer(s) to router LAN port(s).
Plug in modem.
Plug in router.
Boot computer(s).

This should get you internet access on the connected computer(s). If not, please show for a Windows PC ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.

Any advice would be much appreciated for my computer problem below. I will try to include as much information as possible but not having a great understanding of computer systems please ask if more information is needed.

Basic Problem (detailed information below): My laptop won't write/burn onto cd or dvd when it once did with no issues. The computer still recognises, reads, plays both cd's and dvd's with no problems at all. I think something is conflicting with something else but don't know what.

To write to a dvd I am using Record Now Version 7.3

I click "Video Disk" option
(Up the top of Record Now it says _NE DVDRW 9 (D: ) DVD-R 4488 MB free)

* A pop up box appears "MyDVD has detected that DMA is turned off for one or more of the recording devices attached to the system. In order to successfully write to the device, DMA should be turned on - refer to you operating system manual or use Windows help for instruments on how to do this"

By clicking "OK" I am taken to "SONIC MyDVD.
I select "Create or modify DVD VIDEO PROJECT".
I load my project and press "burn"

The program beings planning video and audio, ordering files for video etc., then cancels and ejects disc:

"Could not complete last command because: Device Error - Sense Code (5 30 05) - Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible Format - Write (OSErr, 339973)"

Hello everyone.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150. Yesterday, I quick opened it up to give it a quick clean out. When I put it back together, it wouldn't start at all. So, I had a friend of mine who knows more about computers open it up today and look at it. He was unable to make any diagnosis whatsoever. From what he could tell, everything looked fine.

I was wondering if anyone had been experiencing problems before with this laptop and what they did. Is there any way of telling what is wrong?

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 Problems

You are very very brave, opening a laptop.

While they are hard to get into at times, even harder is the task of reassembly with it actually going at the conclusion.

Most likely its a connection problem, but you give us absolutely no clues as to what happens when you power it up as to any lights. Problem is there are several thousand possibilities. What -exactly- did you do when you opened it up, what did you disconnect etc.

Did you use any anti-static procedures (antistatic mat, wrist strap etc?)

I would like to get all important files from my old 1995 Winbook FX laptop to a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop. If I get an HDD Pocket, will I be able to trasnfer my files??? What kind should I buy? In a store or per Internet???
Thanks in advance for all good suggestions.

Find someone with a normal PC, that has a CD-writer.
Then buy a 2.5"-3.5" adapter, take the harddisk out of the old laptop, insert in that PC, retrieve the files and burn them onto a CD.

would it be a big job to replace a motherboard in a dell inspiron 1150 and would it be worth it cost wise

A:dell inspiron 1150 not working

Where are you going to get the Motherboard for such an old laptop from? Considering that it would be almost a given that any motheboard you find for it is going to be a used motherboard, and that some pretty high level of skills would be required, it would probably cost as much or more than buying a new laptop in the long run. Repalcing the motherboard is in essence building a new computer from used parts. If you have the equipment and the skills needed to do the job yourself, it probably would not be worth it.

My Dell 1150 has always had some problems. First, it would over-heat and shut down, and it did this only after having it for around a year. I fixed to over-heating issue by taking out the heat sink and fan and blowing all the dust away with a can of compressed air, and also using a chill mat to set my laptop on. Now, about a month ago the power lights on my computer began flickering on and off. To fix this problem I would fiddle with the ac adapter power cord until the lights stayed on. The problem began to to the point that when the Ac Adapter was plugged in it wouldnt charge the computer at all. So, I thought this was a power adapter problem and I bought a new one but I still have the same problem. The battery will charge if I put enough pressure on the plug into the socket on the back of my computer but thats the only way it will work.

Anyway, what im thinking is that the previous over-heating has ruined the socket where the ac adapter plugs into the computer. Could this be possible? Is it easy to fix? Suggestions?

I've been working with this Dell Inspiron laptop for a few days. I took the machine apart and applied thermal compound to the base of the heatsink (which rests on top of the CPU) and put a minimal amount on the top of the CPU itself.
The main problem with this model is that it shuts-off after less than 1/2 hour of work. It seems that an overheating problem is common with this model.
To get to the point:

Do you think upgrading to a better heatsink fan will take care of the problem?

The Motherboard seems to be working O.K., BIOS was updated, but the PC shuts down fairly quick.

I wonder if Volcano makes a good heat sink that would be compatible with this Dell model, which I.M.H.O., is a total piece of garbage.

Thanks for any input.

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 / Heatsink problem

does it just shut off or does it lag then turn off like there's something overworking the cpu? if it's a heat problem that's gonna be a tough one, try using some arctic silver 5 on the stock heatsink that stuff is known to drop a few degrees centigrade even on stock heatsinks.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 which I was given recently. The USB ports don't register devices. Like a similar thread from several years ago The USB Contollers have been uninstalled and allowed to auto re-install. No change. Also the USB keyboard & mouse drivers have been un-installed & allowed to re-install automatically.

Device Manager reports the controllers and root hubs are working properly.

A Transcend "Jet_Flash" 2 Gb USB memory stick does show the power light. It does not however begin to flicker indicating that the USB isn't talking to the computer.

I also performed a hardware reset (i.e. power on with no battery). This also failed. There are no entries in Event Viewer indicating a failed USB registration event.

I do have drivers from Dell which have not yet been loaded (via DVD). This is my next step, installing updated drivers, and a BIOS flash. After setting a restore point of course. The computer is running XP Home. All other devices are working correctly. There are no other USB devices.

If the ports are bad would this prevent power being obtained by the USB device?

The questions are is it possible to replace the ports as I assume that they aren't built in to the M/board but attached by a cable link?

Has anyone else found a solution for this problem ?

Hi there,
My first post, and thank you for having me here
I have a Dell Inspiron 1300.
A couple of problems.
1) I changed the memory from 512 to 2gb recently (ddr 2 4200, kingston). I got a message not long after I changed the memory saying I should reinstall/change (not sure) drivers, so I downloaded R92578, which I ran.
2) on startup Window I now get option to start using Windows xp he, or 'restore windows xp he.
3) I downloaded a 'da vinci' theme from dowtheme and now I can't get rid of all of it. I am still left with 'Mona Lisa' on my start page (where the account names are displayed) and if I choose not to 'restore windows xp he' it goes to a da vinci drawing, and then boots to Mona etc. I never thought I wouldn't like seeing Mona so much
4) I tried to install my logitech webcam 9.5 and got the blue screen of death with an lvs something message. So I did a system restore to the day before I did that.

The ram was changed first from all of the above...can anyone can tell me where I'm at, and am I in a lot of trouble?

Thanking you in advance, and I'm not sure if I'm on the right forum board here?

From a previous post, some other people and I were having problems with this laptop and changing the UMA size. After a BIOS update, that problem was solved.

Problem number 2: If you download the latest driver for the Motherboard/Video Card from ATI, the installation terminated with a message "setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware". ATI Support tells me to call Dell, and Dell support doesn't have a clue. Anyone have any ideas?

see previous post for more info about problem number 1

A:Dell 1501 with ATI xpress 1150 256mb (Part II)

All great, but true explaination...

What about this scenario.....

what if ATI sent dell 512 MB HM chips, labeled as 256 MB HM chips.... then if you set HM at 256 with a gig of ram, your system would register 768 MB ram and would show 512 MB of video memory,,, HMMM ,,, nice little screw up huh,,,,

why? well if ATI produces a million 512 chips vs. 500K 256 and 500K 512... then they profit more money... and since their cost is the same for either in Malaysia, they just get consumers to pay two different prices...

if you go to Dell 1150 express upgrade released on 1-16-07, yesterday then the upgrade changes catalyst control to not have buffer options and gives you 512MB of Video memory if you have a gig or ram installed....

but don't take my word for it..... please someone tell me I am wrong... ..

Hello I just picked up a used dell inspiron 1150 from some guy off craigslist. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP on it. I installed the drivers and updates and everything was working great for a day. then the next day i turned the computer on and it can barely do anything.

Everytime you open a folder or any window it will just close the program and go back to the desktop (not just minimize it but close it). Also the mouse is screwy. Its almost as if it is constantly clicking because if you try clicking on something such as the start button in the bottom corner it will just open it then close it again right away. The only way i can get into anything is if i use the keyboard arrows and the enter key.

Im not sure if it has anything to do with it but when you boot the computer it will beep about 10 times unless you press enter.

Hi, I have a Dell GX 260 pc. It has always worked fine, but has a tiny harddrive. With all the updates and the software I need the harddrive was becoming too full. check the cables internally and that you have not knocked anything by mistake as you added the harddrive

Also when you put the VGA cable back onto the PC - check to see if any pins are bent - very easy to bend a pin on those connectors and still connect and screw up

Hi, thicko computer user here with a request for help.

New computer - AMD 64 4600+ Dual-Core PC (Nvidia 7600 GT). Ordered Vista Ultimate 64. Installed, and then downloaded international drivers - Windows Vista 64-bit

This doesn't seem to have changed anything. I can't find the Nvidia Control panel anywhere (there's an Nvdia folder on the C drive but no workable applications that I can see), and there musn't be any ethernet driver installed either as I can't get online (BT Voyager 205).

Can anyone suggest what the problem may be? I guessing it's because the drivers don't fully support my set-up, but hoping I'm wrong on that and somebody can direct me to a download for compatible drivers!

If all else fails I'll go back to XP, but obviously I'd prefer a workable version of Vista.

For you dial-up people out there, I thought I'd pass along this bit of information. I just purchased a new modem that I'm really impressed with in comparison with my old modem. Came across it quite by accident while helping a friend with his computer problems and liked it so much I bought one myself. The icing on the cake is it only cost $8.99 + S&H (total about $14).

I've been using a U.S. Robotics V92 modem (don't remember, or care, what model) for a couple of years now, for which I paid around $40, and was getting real tired of staring at the screen waiting for the modem to make up it's mind to retrieve the page I wanted. That's the real difference in performance. Download speed of a file is slightly better, but not significant, while browsing is markedly improved. It even has the V92 technology if you want to use it. I can finally see value of the accelarator service I have with my ISP.

If anyone is interested you can check it out at newegg here. It's the Encore ENF656-EHW-INPR.

Any suggestions? I have gone to the HP help site and they have run diagnostics and said everything was fine.

A:Motorola modem wont connect to laptop but will on another one?

Cable modem or telephone modem. Operating system?
Generally, for either one, it is a driver install issue. Perhaps we can help if you tell us the exact model and version of hardware and firmware. It should be on the back or bottom of the device.

I have a usr robotics modem sporster extenal. Everything seems to work fine the modem is detected in device manager (I can query the modem). My dialup seems to work fine until it gets just past the authenticating stage.
This is when my whole pc just freezes and I have to hard reboot

I am running windows XP home edition and the Pc is a Packard Bell 1700mhz
Modem drivers are up to date.

This has only happened since the modem was turned off and then back on. When I switched it back on it went throught the hardware wizard. SO I cancelled rebooted and tried dialing up and wham bam the Pc started freezing.

It should also be noted I have a crappy onboard modem which I have disabled (aztech) I then disabled the usr and enabled the onboard modem. Reran the ISP oncifg setup which seeemd to run through fine. Exactly the same problem occured?

Help anyone

A:modem hangs my pc on dialup

Uninstall the driver of your usr first then disable it. Reset your BIOS and check if the onboard is enabled and reinstall the drivers. if it goes fine uninstall the driver of the onboard before disabling it in the BIOS then hookup the usr and reinstall the driver properly... Good Luck!

Hello, I have just installed a new internal modem, ESS chipset PCI V.90 ESS 2838. It took several attempts, but the computer finally recognized the modem on COM 3. When I try to make a dialup to my ISP, however it begins to dial, but then a blue screen comes up and says, "A Fatal Exception 00 has occureed at 0028:C18F53F7 in VXD UNIMODEM (03) + 000003D7. The current Application will be terminated."

Then it says press any button to continue or Ctrl Alt Del to restart computer. When I push another button to continue it just goes to a blank screen and the computer freezes.

Does anyone know what I can do to make the modem dial out instead of going to a blue screen and freezing? In addition, I can't save my password and username on the dialup menu. I click for it to be saved but the next time I open the menu it has disappeared. Please help and I thank you beforehand for any information you can give me. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

Also, screen saver freezes and great deal.

I just got a new PC with XP, and it didnt come with a dialup modem so I put one in and it works ok, but whenever I read from a cd (to install a game or copy files) within seconds my modem disconnects. I never had this problem on my old computer with windows ME using this modem, so I don't understand why my new computer can't handle using the DVD-RW to read cds without disconnecting? I read somewhere that i had to change PIO mode to DMA if available (?) mode .. and I did that, but it didn't help. It still says Using: PIO Mode below it though.
Also just for a little more information concering the dvd-rw; playing DVDs in my dvd-rw is horrible, they skip constantly. No idea what the problem could be

A:Using DVD-RW disconnects dialup modem?

Might suggest try switching the modem card around see if that helps. Maybe change what slot it is in.

I unfortunately have to use dial up. I just upgraded to Vista, however, it doesn't appear that I get a pop up when somebody calls like I did with my old computer. My modem is a PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP. Is there a program I can get that will pop up with the name and number of the person calling and be able to put hold on internet while I answer the call? Thank you for your help!

A:DialUp-Modem question

That feature is called "Modem-On-Hold", or it could have been some phone software of another kind. It is not part of XP or Vista so it had to have been installed on XP. Check the manufacturers site. Sometimes that kind of software is part of the driver package.

I have a Dell Desktop Pentium 4 with a BCM v.90 56K modem running on Windows XP SP2. I have a regular dialup service but the maximum data transfer I can get is 6 kps on a good day - usually it is 3-5.
Is there something wrong with the modem or something else?
I had DSL two months ago (which worked fine) but cut off the service because I coudn't afford it..
Dialup is slow as it is, but 6kps?!
I have not used dialup on this computer before so I don't know what the issues could be.
I thought it was the service so I tried different ones including AOL, Netzero and Juno.
Still same thing.
Is there software that comes with the modem that I may have forgot to install?

Greetings All, My son-in-law has a Toshiba laptop. Unable to connect to his dialup server (He has no cable possibilities where he lives, and doesnt want install a dish where he is quite yet) His laptop connects fine while on cable. I know the cards are different, I was just wondering if there is any test I can perform on the dialup while connected on cable.

A:Testing Dialup Modem?

Testing the modem for what?

I mean...there are tests for functionality, there are indications of modem speed...what is it that you would be looking for by "testing"?

As for your question of testing one connection while on another type...I think not, but I've been wrong before .

If readers have a better understanding of what you see as "the problem", then maybe someone can provide something more intelligent (than what I can) in response.

When I was on dialup (a very long time), I quickly learned that the ISP is the most valuable source of information when a user has a problem connecting. ISPs have internal problems which impact users/customers and they are usaully quite helpful in pointing out user errors when connections are error-plagued because of user mistakes.

A:After wiping vista and installing XP Modem wont connect

whats the make and exact model of the PC - does the manufacturer have XP drivers

where did you get the XP CD and Key from to install XP on that PC

can we see a device manager screen shot
Device Manager
Post back the results in device manager
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

windows key and pause Key should open to allow device manager to be seen on laptops may need to use windows key + FN key + Pause Key
if not then

Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} >
windows 7
start > control panel> System and Security> Device Manager

network adaptors, click on the + > post back the devices listed there
are there any ! ? or X
post a screen shot of the device manager - network adapters

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

My computer knowledge is very limited, and I am posting hoping that someone can help me with my problem.

A friend of mine just gave me a Dell Inspiron 2200. When I try connecting to the internet I am told that internet explorer cannot display the webpage. I do NOT have a wireless router, I am connected to the modem of my PC through ethernet. I ran a network diagnostics for windows XP and it says that there might be a problem with the modem, but the modem works fine with my PC.

The connection status says that there is limited or no connectivity. It further says that this problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. I then clicked on the repair button and it trys to renew the IP address and it says that it cannot finish repairing the problem and tells me to contact the person who manages the network.

In the general local area connection status:

Status: Limited or no connectivity

Duration: 15:00 and counting

Speed: 100.0 Mbps

I have no idea what to do to fix this problem and would appreciate any help that you can provide. I believe that I will have better luck through this forum than to call for help support. Thanks again for the help.

Due to frequent travel I still use a dialup connection on Guam, to save ISP fees for broadband.
After booting up and logging in to my ISP, Eudora and Firefox both work fine.

BUT..If I Disconnect from the ISP, and close the software...I cannot check email and Firefox cannot see any server.
So I have to reboot I only have one phone line and need to keep the line clear...this is very annoying.

Seems that Windows XP is not resetting the modem properly except during the reboot.
Any suggestions?
