Icons on Desktop and Start all changed to Corel logo

Q: Icons on Desktop and Start all changed to Corel logo

I have a Windows 7 Computer on which Corel Paint and Corel Paint Shop Pro were installed.  I clicked on a picture I was editing and all of a sudden all of my icons on my desktop changed to the Corel symbol and every time I try to open them I get an error message saying that they cannot open.  All of the files on the desktop and start programs are .ink files linked to corel.  Even Corel would not open.  I have already tried System Restore and that did not work.  I tried deleting the Icon cache data base file and restarting the computer and that did not work.  I even deleted all of my Corel products and that did not do it.  The only things I can open are recycle bin, control panel and windows explorer (which I have to open by right clicking the start button).  I cannot open any of my other installed programs without getting the error message that they are now .ink files and cannot be opened.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A: Icons on Desktop and Start all changed to Corel logo

Search on 'Corel Draw' here.  Does that sound like the problem you're having?  Some reported a fix here.  Where the check mark is.  Idea is to download that zip and double click the .reg file in it, per the Microsoft Moderator who made it.  Supposed to work in Vista or Win7.  But I've not had the problem, so haven't tried it.

Someone here in BC might know if that really works; it might be malware, so let them help you first.  It's not a new problem.  If you'll read the first link, others had the same problem when they clicked on other folders and files.

In fact, you can click here to see how common the problem (I ran a Google search in that link).

Was running Windows 2000 pro and tried to install Norton AV 2006. Thgis failed to install completely and when I rebooted, all desktop icons changed to Microsoft logos. None will open. All applics lost. Tried to reinstall OS in "repair" mode but won't do it. Tried a clean install and that also failed.

Any suggestions?? If harddrive is permanently lost is there a way to save data???

Please try to make replies understandable to a non-techie ......appreciate any help

Are you sure it's not just the icons that have gone wrong? If so, you will still have your apps and everything and will just need to install them again.

When I downloaded 32bit version of iTunes all my desktop icons and all my start icons changed to iTunes logo and shortcuts all want to open iTunes.

When I uninstall iTunes and reboot computer it fixes problem but I want to use itunes so can update my iphone.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Solved: Desktop Icons and Start icons changed

If you're still having trouble after installing iTunes again, download THIS.

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file (in Notepad), right-click the file (before opening it) and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I don't know if I should post this to the Windows 7 forum but it may be an infection.

My little niece was in the internet when a warning message popped up saying that the computer was infected. She swears she clicked the X to close the window instead of clicking the "no" option. That was the last time the computer worked normally. Now every time the computer restarts there will be a browser with windows media center running. All the icons in the desktop have the Windows media center logo. When I click in most of them Windows Media Center opens instead and I have to use a backdoor to the internet because none of my internet browser work. I tried re-setting the file associations in control panel but I couldn't make it work. I tried some easy fixes I found when I googled it but nothing seems to work since everything I open gets WMC. So I decided to post to this forum as my last resort. All icons show now WMC except Adobe reader and file folders.

Help and happy new year!!!!

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

I'm guessing you're a fairly new computer/internet user, otherwise you would know that posting everything in CAPITAL LETTERS is considered shouting. It is also extremely difficult to read.

For that reason, I haven't even tried to read it, I'll wait for the edited version.

Either the "exe" fix on here or the "lnk" fix should do the trick. I would start with the "exe" fix:http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...If you can't access the internet then download the reg files on another computer and Save them onto a flash drive. They should run from the flash drive on the faulty computer (double click) or you can copy them over onto it somewhere and double click them from there.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

I have stayed with IE6 because it worked fine for my needs. A few sites keep bugging me to upgrade to IE7 because they no longer support IE6. This morning I upgraded (for the 3rd time I might add over the past few years). Each upgrade was downgraded because some nerd at Microsoft decided I would surely want all his useless crappola on my system. I had desktop icons depicting my choices and now I have a bunch of stylized e's. No amount of "change icon" choices will change to MY choice. IE7 also has bars, click here, click there etc all over the map. NOT my choices. Not sure what to do now except revert back to IE6 and let the chips fall where they may.
Anyone?

A:IE7 changed desktop icons

Please be more explicit - "crapola" and "bars, click here" don't help us understand what you are complaining about. If you don't like the desktop icons, delete them. If it's something else please explain clearly. Thank you.

Hi guys,
I'm new to this site and I joined because I'm having a few bizarre issues with a PC in my workplace. I'll separate them into different threads and use this one to talk about an issue with desktop icons. I noticed that a few people have mentioned this problem on this site but there didn't seem to be any permanent resolution.
The issue is this: A few weeks back, one of the users that I support reported that all of his desktop icons had changed. I connected to his PC and confirmed that they had all changed to the generic Windows 7 icon (shortcuts and actual programs in the programs menu). I logged on as administrator to make a few adjustments (thinking it was a profile issue) to find that whilst logged on as admin I was also seeing the generic icons. I tried the usual - right click on an icon and try to change it manually but this option was not available and was greyed out. I then deleted the icon cache under AppData and rebooted the PC but this had no effect. I even went into the registry and tried to modify it there (following instructions I found on a tech site) but the problem persisted.
I have scoured the Internet trying to find a solution to this problem and every page I go to seems to be a dead end and nobody has found a solution that works. This has got to be a Windows problem and I would be flabbergasted if Windows didn't have some sort of fix for this. Has anybody come across this issue before?

All of a sudden all my desktop icons are set to the icon of one of my program files (excep the icon for My Computer). I can't change any of them back using the 'properties' option. When I try to 'apply' the change, it changes it in the properties window, but doesn't do it on the desktop.

What gives? Is there some file that's got some global property set or a flag that doesn't allow changes to the desktop icons?

Every desktop icon except the My Computer icon is like this. Any new shortcuts or folders I create also inherit this "default" icon.

Do you have a copy of Tweakui?

There is a part of the program that will rebuild the icons for you.

You did not indicate whether you were running XP or 2000/NT. the versions for the two of them are different, so I will send you links to both of the versions.

This one is for XP.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
This is for the rest.

http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

Just install tweakui and go to the repair page and tell it to rebuild the icons.

If this does not work, let us know so we can look at other possible causes.

Following a Skype update today, some of my desktop and taskbar (also Start Menu) icons immediately disappeared, only to be replaced with standard Windows icons. This involved mostly Microsoft and Adobe programs, including Outlook, Word, Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat, but also Google Earth and QuickTime Player.
I've carried out a Icon cache rebuild, but this has not restored the original icons, resulting instead in standard .exe icons or blank (i.e. white) icons.
When I try to change the icon for these programs, I generally get messages similar to this one (for Adobe Reader):
Windows cannot find file %SystemRoot%\Installer\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AC0F074E4100}\SC_Reader.ico.

Does anyone know what to do? I've seen on the internet that various people have had the same problem, but I have yet to read a working solution. I'm considering a System Restore...

When you see cmd.exe, right click on it and select Run as administartor2. Type the following in the elevated command prompt, pressing Enter after each line :taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe
cd /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local

I had to select another icon other than the original then back to the original to get them back to normal. I know about F5 that refreshes the icon s but it didn't work.

Hi
I had help in removing a virus ('windows has encountered critical error and will close in one minute') from my computer via this site about a month ago. A couple of the symptoms were altered appearance of the desktop icons and windows calendar opening on start up. Both of these went away when the computer was cleaned here. Last week they both reappeared - the calendar I fixed by changing the settings but I cannot fix the icons which have a 'cartoon-like' appearance again. I tried deleting the icon cache and letting the computer create another but that didn't work and I don't want to make things worse by meddling further in what I don't know enough about. I've scanned the computer with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes (with MSE disabled) and the computer comes up clean. I think I was caught by the fake Adobe update last time but I have removed Adobe Reader and added Foxit as advised at the time of the last virus removal. The only thing that has been downloaded was some kind of clipart my wife got from a free website a few weeks back. No alerts popped up about the site or files at the time. Any ideas on a cause/remedy for this?
Many thanks,
Russ

It is a regular problem. Some windows files are deleted/corrupted. Try the options below:

Use system restore and restore to a previous dated restore point(which worked without the problem you specified)
If that didn't work, try the Avira AntiVir Removal Tool from Here
And the last option is using recovery tools like the one below. I've personally used it and was helpful.

I'm connected to a friend's laptop whose son's account shows almost all of the desktop icons for programs (TeamVIewer, Chrome, MBAM, etc) and other with a Notepad icon.

The son says he remembers being asked a question to which he answered Notepad resulting in all the icons changing. This was several months ago so System Restore is out of reach as a solution.

Does anyone recognize this or see a way to change them back to their defaults?

I tried one for Chrome and it actually showed a Chrome icon logo to choose in Change Icon, but wouldn't take it when I tried to apply it.

Not sure how or why this happens, but I put my computer to sleep last night (no pun intended) and this morning when turning it on all "shortcut" icons on my desktop were the same - and you can still see the regular icons behind it. Note: Only the "shortcut" icons were affected and no other ones. Also, the shortcuts all still worked properly. Just the so called "overlay" is different.

I happened to try adding a new shortcut, and when I do so all the "shortcut" icons change again.

Sometimes they all change to the exact same "overlay" and other times there can be more than one overlay, but only the "shortcut" icons are affected.

After searching the forums - I would have tried rebuilding icon cache that was mentioned a number of times, but the post has the following note:

Quote:
This will not help with any of the following icon issues:
All icons for a specific file extension display the wrong icon. This may be do to setting the wrong association for what program to open the file extension instead. You can restore the default file extension's associations to fix this icon instead.

I've also checked the default file extension's associations post and my registry entries matched up with the "lnk" entry on that page, except for:

Hi all,

I have a rather annoying issue that I can't seem to fix. Some of my desktop icons have somehow changed to a lower resolution image centered inside a 1px frame. Recreating the icons doesn't fix it either, about 20% of my apps have small icons which used to be regular size. This happens now on some newly installed applications. Windows 10 Pro clean install about 3 months ago. This issue has been happening for the last 2 weeks. They used to be all consistent then one day I minimize a couple windows to get to desktop and boom, some icons were small, I immediately rebuilt the icon cache, it didn't work so I left it.

Here is a screenshot of what I mean.

Things I have tried but were unsuccessful:

Hi, I'm running XP SP2, and my desktop icons changed after i played a game. I think i installed forceware 7.7 drivers before i played the gaem so i'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. BUt anyways, the desktop icons changed to the 'default' icons, the plain ones that came with windows..

Help is appreciated.

I seem to have done something that screwed up my Win 7 RC slightly, but I have no idea what it was. All of a sudden, the icons on the desktop (more precisely, icons for links, not actual files) change their colors at the last stage of the boot up. What I mean is that after I type in my password the desktop appears with all icons shown correctly. But then, as the machine finishes booting up - i.e. starts all the sidebar and anti-virus and other apps - at the last second the icons lose their colors. Sometimes later on they regain them - but again, I have no idea what causes it. If anyone has seen something similar, I would be grateful for a tip.

My desktop icons and start folder and progrmas folder icons have (about 90% of them) all been changed ot the default windows icon.

I cannot change it back using properties, even though the original icon is being showed in the properties pane.

Any idea on how to fix this??? This all coincided with a faulty McAfee update I got yesterday (I was _ this _ close to reformatting until I discovered what the problem was) I unistalled it as I was not able to do a system restore (all my restore points were no good)

Any ideas on how to get them back??? The desktop icons are fine if I am using desktopX, but only for the desktop not the start/programs folders.

Today I went into the office and on the desktop screen all the icons were scattered in many different locations. This is something I can fix, I think, but the thing that has me perplexed is the icons which are usually along the bottom, in the quick launch section, are now vertical along the right side.

This shouldn't be a hard fix, but for the life of me I can't find the place to change the launch area from the right side back to the bottom.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Right click the taskbar, and uncheck Lock the Taskbar, if it is checked. Now go to Properties. Under taskbar location take the drop down menu and choose Bottom. Apply and OK. Lock the Taskbar to keep it from changing.
As for your desktop icons, right click a blank space on the desktop and choose View Check Align icons to Grid, uncheck Auto Arrange Icons.

A:Slow internet and desktop icons changed

Just a couple of things to do.

1. Run HijackThis and click on “Do a System Scan Only”.
2. Close all programs except for HijackThis, and place a check beside ONLY the following items:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe

Go ahead and do all the 016 items as well. Most if not all of them in your log are harmless, but you can get them back when necessary by going back to the sites associated with them.

Click on FIX CHECKED

** I would also download and run CCleaner if you don’t already have it. You can get it from a link below my signature.

** There are several items in your startup list that are not necessary to be running at startup. I suggest something like Startup Control Panel or Startup Inspector to manage those items.

** I would also disable the “Kernel Fault Check” item in your startup. Right click on My Computer, selecting Properties and then the Advanced tab. Click on the Settings button in 'Startup and Recovery'. In the bottom pane - under 'Write debugging information' - click on the down arrow and then select 'None' - OK your way out.

And I've messed around so much trying to fix it myself (before asking for help) 'cuz I'm sure it's simple, that now I'm not sure I can remember what I did just before the problem showed up or what I've done to 'try' to correct it. My 1st shot, even tho' blurred, will show that the 'text color' below each icon was white & easy for me to read. The 2nd, after it changed, shows the color more blackish, harder to read. I also think there's a bit of difference in background color? I also messed that up again just before I came to post but didn't think to get a shot.

A:My desktop icons & background color changed

you ain't gonna believe this!!!! I closed the forum after I posted above, didn't bother to look at my desktop, clicked on my search site to look for something else which also involved clicking on dt & when I did so, would you believe that the text was back to white!! The background color is still not what I want but am half afraid to try correcting that now. I know there are some issues with my PC (mainly the idiot sitting here typing) but there's no way I can do a 'reinstall' which seems to be the posted answer so many times when I read other posts.

Hello,

First of all, this is my first post here, so I'm sorry if I'm doing something wrong here.

So, onto the problem. As the title suggests, all my desktop shortcut icons have changed. I know this is a common problem, but after a brief bit of research, I can't seem to find people with either the same problem as me, or a general fix that works. I have no idea how to describe what my icons have changed to, so here's a screenshot:

All of the shortcuts work fine, and the problem has no real effect on the performance or usage of my laptop, but it's just an aesthetic problem.

So far I have:
- Deleted the IconCache
- Created a new user to see if the problem persists (it did)
- Deleted and re-created a shortcut
- Changed the shortcut icon

This problem originally occured because a few of the icons changed, so I downloaded "Microsoft Fixit" to try and, well, "Fixit", and it changed all the shortcut icons.

I hope that at least some of my problem has been described well enough, and any response is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

stb1996

Yes if you know how to use a resource editor like Restorator and know where to find the existing icons. There are a few icon sets that come with auto installers but not many. Unfortunately location maps all seem to be a bit piecemeal and scattered across the net at the moment.

Hey, guys. Finally I have found the place where my problem might get solved.

Thing is:

1.There is a big "X" on 3 out of 4 disks I got(except "C" disk) as shown in the picture below:

2.Desktop icons are changed as well but not all of them.

This is the second time this kind of crap happens to me. Last time it happened was after I clicked system backup. I couldn't stand the problem so I reinstalled my windows 7 pro 32bit and at first it was all ok. It came back after I rebooted which I couldn't figure out why. The only diffrence is last time all the desktop icons were changed, but this time as you can see some of the icons aren't changed.

Have anybody had the same problem as I do and know how to solve it ?

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Kind Regards
nasda

Hi guys!

I'm new here..so, please bear with me.
I think my Icons got bugged or something. This happened after my friend asked me to move some music and movies from my computer to his hard drive. After I did that, i turned off my laptop and went back to my room and turned it on. What happened next worried me since I wasn't able to move my mouse, the Icons have an Icon that is a square white on top of each. It's an icon on top of one. I turned off my laptop how many times and still does it so i restore it on an earlier date. After i did that, My mouse started working yet my computer became so slow and the Icons are still the same. (white square on top of an old Icon and the icons when you click start are just white squares). I'm getting frustrated already since I'm nowhere near Bestbuy since I am deployed here in Afghanistan. Should I just send this laptop back home since I paid for the insurance anyway or is this fixable while i'm here? Please help. thanks a lot in advance!

My problem is simply this, when i boot my pc into windows the boot takes maybe 3 seconds to desktop, but the icons on the desktop do not appear for another 10 seconds. The same can be said for the icons in the start menu. The biggest problem is that even if i run the icon such as firefox, before the icon has fully loaded, the program will not run. No programs will run until 13 seconds after boot once the icons have loaded.

Hi conrad,

Have a SSD or a HDD, if a hard disk run a defrag. or when was last time you did.

Use disk cleanup or download CCleaner which is good CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Check Anti-Virus settings, how it loads during boot or not, AV take time to load.
Run a full system scan.

Check startup items from task manager, in startup tab if use CCLEANER there is one on it too. I would rather use task manager.

Run error checking, can run it in properties of the drive or run a full chkdsk which is better.
Exactly as typed.
From the elevated command prompt, type chkdsk c: /f /r
then again at elevated command prompt run: sfc /scannow

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:

While working offline, my Dell Latitude 131L goes into hibernate. When I restart the laptop it opens to a generic "Dell" desktop picture. There is no Start Menu or toolbar. No desktop icons are available. The cursor is in the middle of the screen, but is of no use. I was NOT installing any software or hardware.

I attempted to reboot, same screen appears.

I am able to start in "Safe Mode."

I attempted to use a Restore point, but each time (I tried several dates) it will not take.

I called Dell and we ran a Hardware test (Fn and Power keys), no errors were present.

Update: It loads REAL slow, taking about 15 minutes or more. But then I can not anything. After an hour of loading, I ran Kaspersky and no threats were found.

Restarted and got a blue screen that says
Checking the file System C:
The type of file system is NTSF.
The volume is dirty

Then it does a series of verifications that take a long time.

The following steps will be a good start to resolving the issue. The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing. On a working computer, download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD.Find the brand name of your hard drive. You will find this info on the label of the hard drive (most likely you will have to remove the hard drive from the box to read the label). You will also find sufficient info to identify the drive (the model number) by looking at the hdd code in the BIOS Setup Menu, and then googling the code. Another alternative is to use something like Everest or Belarc Advisor.

I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk, I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive???? Hello,

I am having a problem with my laptop (running Windows XP SP2 with AVG virus).

When I log into my user name, an error about nnlmk.exe pops up (can not access or have permission) and then my task bar/start menu and desk top icons vanish.

I can recover them briefly by going through Task Manager and running explorer.exe but then it cyclically appears and vanishes.

I have ran AVG and "repaired" some infected files as well as ran SpyBot/Adaware/Spyblaster.

I beleive this problem is very similar to that of this thread

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...d-windows.html

but I can not physically delete nnlmn.exe since the explorer crashes too quickly for me to access it.

Thanks,

A:Black Desktop, missing all icons, malware, start menu missing icons, programs all empty

I went through this same thing. The folders that say empty...are they light rather than normal? If so you didn't change the setting for files and folders correctly (I did the same thing at first) Open up windows explorer (my computer, etc) click on organize, then go down to folder and search options:

On the first tab (general) under navigation pane make sure "show all folders" is selected.

Then go to the next tab (view) and make sure those settings are correct, select the radio for "show hidden files, folders and drives" and make sure all your other settings are the way you want them.
I got mine from clicking on a link to a website I'd never gone to before and then what i thought was adobe told me that I needed to update my flash player to view the content on the page, I clicked ok and it took over my computer with the same exact things you're talking about.

Hi,
About one hour ago, my computer crashed during a game of GTAIV. Nothing happened during the CTRL-ALT-DEL instinct so I just switched off the laptop by the power button.
But when I came onto rebooting it a minute later, I discovered that there was just a blank blue screen staring at me. No start bar, no icoons, not even my background image. I'm stumped. The only way to get into things is by opening the sticky key warning, click ease of access, thus opening control panel, (i hunted around there) and entering my desktop through that way. Please, I need to finish up some work and get playing again.

Hi guys, so I have a little problem, I've downloaded FileTypesMan because I wanted to change the .exe files appearance on my computer.

I did this using this program - all .exe file icons changed, however, with them changed ALL the shortcuts to all the programs that I have on my laptop - now they all look the same.

I can't figure out how to change it all back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
THanks

Hello Max, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed exe item in the tutorial below may be able to help. It'll restore the default association and registry entries for exe files.

Hi guys,

I posted a log on the site back on 27 March but haven't had any responses to the request for help. I was just re-posting the hijackthis log to see if anyone could possibly help me out with what I need to do to fix this problem.

The PC has had the desktop changed from the usual desktop picture to a red screen with a biohazard symbol in the middle stating that the pc is in danger. The PC also keeps getting error messages pop up claiming to be windows system messages prompting me to download antispyware programs. There are also a number of new icons on the desktops that are labelled as spyware removal tools".

If anyone can help me out here I'd be very grateful.

Best regards,

Ian

After finally updating my computer (per a prompt in the bottom right icons), upon restart all of my desktop icons and the start menu/bar have disappeared. Nothing happens if I right-click the screen, and I can only navigate via Windows Task Manager. I tried to download Tweak UI Powertoys, but half the websites I try to visit will not load (gmail, facebook, anything requiring a secure login). I ran anti-spyware and anti-virus to no avail. I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 8.1.

I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.

I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.

Hello, Would someone please be able to help me. I recently got my computer back after being repaired and it was on a small resoultion under the 1000's. I bought a new screen to go with it and just turned it on. I went to display settings and changed resoultion to 1920x1080 and now its just a big blank stretched wallpaper with no icons, task menu/bar or start menu. I also can't click or right click thus I have no way to change this back. I've tried going into normal safe mode and display settings changed it to the smallest, restarted the computer and its doing the exact same thing. I know no fixes and would really appreciate all the help I can get.

A:Changed Resoultion, Icons, Taskbar, Start menu All gone. Can't Click or right click

Follow the below steps:
Press CTRL+Alt+delete together and hit enter
Click on File and New Task (Run)
Type "Control" without any quotes. This will open control panel Window, from where you can easily get to display settings options and change your PC resolution back to it's initial state.

Good Luck.

Hello,

Yesterday the icons for desktop "files" (not shortcuts) all changed to the Filezilla icon. I have tried rebuilding the iconcache.db and its does not fix the problem. I have been troubleshooting and it appears that the icons are all correct up until explorer.exe loads, then they all blank out, come back normal, and then the Filezilla logo looks to overlay on top of the normal icon.

I am running Win 7 64 bit SP1 with 16 GB memory, Core i7.

Thoughts?

Help! I just "upgraded" (and I use the term loosely) from Corel Graphics Suite 9 to Suite 12 and the new installation hijacked my file icons! CorelDraw files used to be represented in Explorer (and Powerdesk, which I use most often) by a colorful hot-air balloon. Suite 12 has replaced this icon with teeny-tiny thumbnails of the contents of each of the individual files. No two files contain the same thing, so now no Corel file icon matches any other Corel file icon. This is extremely counter-productive, as now all directories take longer to load into dialogue boxes (like "open") and it "un-distinguishes" the files - files with little unique but blobby icons could be Corel files or they could be files from programs whose icons I don't recognize. (Corel's warranty support now consists of letting you e-mail them, which I did, and they claimed not to understand my question - so here I am.)

I'm running XP Professional, Service Pack 1 and so far I've tried a system restore, which eliminated Suite 12 functionality entirely (it left the .exe, but when I double-clicked on it, I got an error message). I also tried just changing the icon in the venerable "folder options", which had no effect.

Any ideas as to how I can change my newly-unrecognizable icons back to ANY single icon? Thanks in advance for the help!

I like W8 interface alot, but certain things don't seem to work.

Like normally, you could go into the Start menu, and copy/move/edit/delete icons. But In W8, I don't see any way of doing this. The only options they give you is to pin.

So the "All Programs" Menu in W8 is the Apps menu. And there doesn't seem to be a way to drag any of those shortcuts onto the desktop. There doesn't seem to be away to open file location of any of these shortcuts either.

What am I supposed to do?

A:How do you move icons from Start to Desktop?

If you right click on the tile and select pin to taskbar, you can pin to the taskbar. If you select open file location then it will open in the file explore, right click & hold on the item and drag to the desktop and release->Create shortcut

OR:

you can use the tutorial, for example : "Music" Store App Shortcut - Create in Windows 8

I experienced a two days ago when I just downloaded the newest version of Internet
Explorer. It said I had to reboot my computer when the install was completed and when it turned back on all I could see was my desktop wallpaper. I waited, and waited, and waited but it just stayed a blank screen with just my wallpaper showing. The only thing I could get to work was Windows Task Manager (Ctrl, Alt., Delete). From there I can access programs like MSN Messenger and my browser (Firefox).

This has been quite frustrating to me. I simply don't know what I should do so I'm asking if theres anyone here that can help me. I will provide any more information I can if needed.

I recently was browsing yahoo, when my computer screen went blank and shut off. When I restarted it, I kept getting a virus alert from an antivirus program I did not have loaded on my computer. This was anti-virus pro, or anti-virus 2010, something to that effect. I ran AVG and it found sheur trojan and other viruses. AVG could not remove all the infections. I tried other virus removers, and they could not even finish a scan. I tried numerous ways to remove the virus, and now I have a screen saver and nothing else-no desktop icons or start menu. I was initially not able to even get the task manager to run, but now can at least use that. I tried to run the dds, and got to the black screen, but then it disappears with no report. When I log on to my laptop, my desktop icons and start bar are there, but they disappear after a couple of seconds, leaving only my background. This most recent time they never appeared at all, it was nothing but my background. I opened the Windows Task Manager with CTRL ATL DEL and clicked New Task, opened SpySweeper, and ran the sweep.

Something called a zenosearchassistant and some cookies came up.

I quarantined them and deleted them. I ran the sweep again and nothing came up. But my desktop is still not working correctly. So, I did some searching about the zenosearchassistant and from what I can tell it's just supposed to give me endless pop up ads or something, which I never had a problem with at all, so maybe that's not why my desktop is messed up. I've tried restarting a couple of times too, and it' still not working.

Any help is appreciated, thank you guys so much. And if there's somewhere else that would be better for this question, just point me in the right direction. Thanks again.

Ok, so I started to build a new computer for 3-d modeling with solidworks and autoCAD and also some gaming. I had a friend put the pc together for me; for this was my first custom built pc.

This is my build:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor 2.4 GHz
NVIDIA 680i SLI motherboard
850 Cool master power supply
4 Gigs Corsair ram (1gig single sticks in the four slots on the motherboard)
BFG NVIDIA 8800 GTX video card at 756 ram
2x Dual layer DVD burners
Zalman GT-1000 Gaming Case

I am running windows xp 64 bit

Problem I am having is I keep losing my desktop icons and start menu, also right click is not available. Couldn?t figure it out so I re-installed everything after only one day of use. My computer guy said I had a virus from the internet. I said ok and went with it. He fixed it and I took the pc home again. Well after 4 days of gaming with Unreal tournament and some minor 3d modeling with Solidworks, my icons and desktop are missing again and I can not right click either. I made another account name beside mine and had everything working ok with this new account name. Figured since everything was working well and I would just delete the messed up account. After that I also suggest running Hijack This[link below] then follow the below instructions fully, and post the log in this thread, whereupon it'll be analysed by those-in-the-know here and then appropriate fixes will be suggested..

follow the next instructions on posting the Hijack This log here;

It’s very important that you save the log to its own permanent folder on your hard drive, such as Program Files/Hijack This, or My Documents/Hijack This, (NOT a temporary files folder) or you may loose the ability to undo any changes you make, so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows/and any open web browers and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET;- Await further analysis here.

My son's desktop start bar and desktop icon have disappeared.

A:start bar and desktop icons don't showup

Well you can try to get them back, but it sounds like you may be infected by a virus.

First, right click on the desktop and go to "Arrange Icons By" and then make sure that "Show Desktop Icons" is checked

If this does not return the icons, then there is a good change a virus has hidden them from you. If this is the case I recommend you look over the First Steps at Removing Malware

Last night, I had a few friends over, and one of them had spy sweeper with antivirus. I was going to install that, but later decided that i would just re install my norton antivirus (because it wasnt do the live update needed). I re installed, and after a nice long full system scan, my system came up clean.
I continued using my computer for some time last night, and then all of a sudden, the desktop icons disappeared, as well as the start menu. So what does someone do in this situation? I restarted my computer and tried and to hope for the best. Well, it turns out that restarting the computer allows the icons to pop up for only about 3 seconds, and then they disappear again and im left with my wallpaper.
I opened up internet explorer by quickly double tapping the icon when they appeared, but then they disappeared again. So I hit control alt delete, and then started a new task which was called explorer. This brought up the icons again, but only for a few seconds...again. So I ran norton again, but only found 1 tracking cookie after an entire full system scan. I have no idea what to do, but im so sick of paying to get things fixed, and everything has been breaking down on me for no reason. Would anybody PLEASE be able to help??

Thanks,

Matt
