Dell XPS 8700 crashing after install ssd

Q: Dell XPS 8700 crashing after install ssd

I installed a Samsung ssd 850 evo on my 3 month old dell 8.1, it ran extremely fast , no issues at all.  I was so satisfied until the operating system crashed.  I tried to reinstall the hhd and I get this error 0xc0000225, computer needs to be repaired.  Computer will not let me do anything.   I did put the original hhd back in and it seems to run ok.  As before I cannot put the hhd in.

A: Dell XPS 8700 crashing after install ssd

What did you use to install Windows 8.1?
Is this the same version as the original installed on the computer?

Six months ago, I installed Windows 10 from an update.  My computer had been using the 8.1 operating system.  For some reason, everything went haywire a couple of weeks ago, and I went to recovery and reset the computer to default factory settings.  It took quite a while for this to complete.

However, after I did this, I had several updates that had to be completed, and I did this.  Then the Windows 10 update logo appeared on the bottom of my screen, and I tried to update to Windows 10 from 8.1.

I am unable to do this now.  I get an error message that "We couldn't update the system reserved partitions."

When I contacted Windows Support, they said that sometimes after updating to Windows 10 and then refreshing, the next update wouldn't work well.

What can I do to get Windows 10 back on my computer.  I am so used to it, and I really like it.  I am old and cannot do really difficult tasks, but I can do some.

Thanks. for your help.

I have an XPS 8700 desktop all stock bought a little over a year ago. Last night I turned it off when I went to bed. Today I turned it on and it will not go past the first dell loading screen. It freezes and I'm unable to press any buttons (F2, F12 etc) I put it a different hard drive to see if that was the problem but it still continued. HELP PLEASE??

A:Dell XPS 8700 Desktop, Freezes at dell loading screen unable to boot up.

Hi Mattmazz
Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

EDIT: Rewritten for clarity
On Realtek ALC3861 Audio Driver (ver., A00) for Windows 10, there is no longer a button labeled "Show Meters" under Speakers/Headphones > Maxx Audio Pro in the bottom right corner (please see attached screenshot). This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup.
What I did:
Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version.
What I expected:
The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver.
What really happened:
Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared.

I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc)

If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it.

A:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

What are the possible cpu coolers that you can install on the mobo dell xps 8700 motherboard without any fancy ghetto mounting. Just as if it was a normal motherboard?

The XPS 8500, the precursor to the XPS 8700, has standard Socket 1155 spacing. Socket 1150 shares the spacing of the 1155, and thus I believe an aftermarket cooler should work.
A Cooler Master Vortex was a perfect fit on my XPS 8500 motherboard, and I assume the same would hold true for an XPS 8700. You will use optical drive-type screws to fasten the cooler to the board rather than the flimsy plastic push-pins.
Looking at an XPS 8700 mainboard on eBay, I can see a standard four-pin CPU fan header, just like that of the XPS 8500.

Good day everyone!
This is my first post to the forums, as I am a recent Dell convert - Dell monitors, a tower and speakers all make up my new workstation! One thing I wanted to do to improve performance from the get go was to use a solid state drive as a boot drive as well as some storage for some intensive games (like Flight Simulator) and for work. This is the drive I chose:

I did not, however, do as the installation had recommended by connecting it to the USB port with a SATA to USB converter because I had forgotten to buy one, and decided to forego that step and just install it straight in the case, using one of the spare hookups for power for the HDDs and plugging in the SATA cable to the motherboard. The SATA cable I had no issue with, but the cord for the power supply may not be fully plugged in (I heard a click, but the cord is a little short).
I went to go clone the drive with the included Samsung Magician/Data Migration tool and all went well, it only took about 4 minutes to clone the OS (nothing else is installed yet basically). I was hoping that the changes would have turned the SSD into a hard drive/boot drive, but when I turned it back on, the OS was still booting from the old C: drive.
I went inside device manager and the SSD shows, but it's not being recogniz... Read more

Hi everyone, I am newbie here. Recently I need to upgrade my ram on XPS8700. And I went to Best Buy and bought a "PNY - 2-Pack 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit". It does not work, computer can not power on with flashing orange lights.
So I went to Crucial website, it recommends me to use a DDR3L RAM. I saw all the DDR3Ls are for laptops. Could it be used in my desktop? And my current RAM is Hyundai. Could it be mixed with other brand like Crucial or Kingston?

Laptops first started using DDR3L which is why the market is flooded with it, however you just need to look for the desktop version for your computer.  If you go to crucial they should have an auto test that will detect the correct ram for your machine and give you the list of options you can pick from.

I'm considering installing an SSD on my desktop computer, and have read several places I need to set my BIOS to AHCI mode. I have no such mode listed in my BIOS. The only 2 options listed are LEGACY and UEFI. Is Legacy just Dell's description for AHCI? Can I just install using LEGACY? I can't seem to get any answers from the Dell forums. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit OS. I think the bios version is 8. If I use the LEGACY mode, will Trim still work? This will be a clone, not a fresh Windows install.

Since I upgraded to W10, the Audio Service and internet connection both keep crashing. Randomly.

My computer is the only one hard-wired to the router. We have others and none loses their signal. I made sure to try wi-fi on and off, no difference. Tried a different cable.

The Audio service crashing is much more annoying. It happens every 15 minutes. Everytime, I can restart the service like if nothing happened.

I tried to update drivers, disable / uninstall every listing in the Audio controllers (device manager). I have NVIDIA, Realtek and Logitec Webcam 500 High Definition Audio.

Audio service keeps crashing, no matter what.

What MS OS can the Aurora R1 support (2560x1440 display, updated GPU)
What MS OS can the Aurora R3 support (2560x1440 display)
Can either move to Windows 8.1.x? Or both?
Can either or both move to Windows 10.x?
What is significantly different between Win 8.1.x Pro and Win 10 Pro?

Thanks gurus!

First there is a free upgrade from Windows 7 OEM to Windows 10 Retail so there is absolutely zero point in purchasing a Windows 8.1 Retail license...
Windows 10 TH2 is essentially a fixed version of Windows 8.1 where Metro Apps work correctly as "Windows".
Almost any system shipped with Windows 7 can run Windows 10. As they are 2009 and 2011 models respectively Dell did not provide updated drivers for Windows 8.x or Windows 10 because they are all out of warranty. All the drivers should be inbuilt into Windows 10 TH2 or automatically obtained via Windows Update. Its advised to update your BIOS to the latest revision before proceeding.
A Clean Installation also in general performs better. See here for details:
Both systems likely have a legacy (non-UEFI) BIOS so take that into account when making the Bootable USB. Although you may want to look at the BIOS settings for the 2011 model to see if there is UEFI support.

What follows is the text of the initial message that I posted at the Dell Desktop Forum regarding this problem:
Running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, Service Pack 1 on a Dell XPS 8700 Special Edition PC.  I am experiencing audio distortion/breakup & dropouts/skips when playing music from the computer through headphones or external speakers.  The problem occurs whether the source is iTunes, Windows Media or the optical drives.  The longer the listening time, the more frequent & severe the errors become.  When listening to ripped copies of the same music through an iPod connected directly to the audio system or headphones, no errors occur.  I have installed an ASUS Xonar U7 external sound card.  This seems to have improved the overall sound but it has not solved the distortion issue.  The relevant drivers appear to be up to date.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.
After a series of exchanges with Chris M, and performing actions suggested by him that included establishing that the Onboard Audio Controller was disabled & removal of the program REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO DRIVER, Chris M's latest reply was:
I do not think that this is a computer hardware issue. The fact that both the Realtek and the 3rd party Xonar both have the issue points to the operating system resource allocation has the problem. Before you go getting a new hard drive, I also had this issue. There are two versions of Win 7, one includes drivers and one doesn´t. Am seeing a problem I haven't seen before. When I put the ATI HD 5770 card in the Dell XPS 8700 and reboot the computer to install the driver, I see a black, blank screen, no video. I know that the system is booting from the sounds, but no video. I've tried using both DVI ports on the back of the card, booting in safe mode, but just not seeing any video.

The only thing that I can think of to try is uninstalling the previous card that's being replaced, Nvidia GT 720, and booting with the new card installed. But I'm not sure that'll help, I just don't understand why I'm not getting basic, legacy video when I reboot the computer with the HD 5770 installed.

Any ideas?

A:Brand New Dell XPS 8700 - Multiple BSODs

I have debugged the dumps and all seem to have the same error, I have done some research about your crashes and have found some possible causes:

1.) Incorrect BIOS Configuration
2.) Faulty RAM Module

The Fixes for these are as follows:
1.) Restore the BIOS Configuration
2.) Remove the faulty RAM.

Modifying BIOS/CMOS settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. I cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk. But it may be the only way to fix the BSOD's you are encountering.

If I was in your position I would try restoring the BIOS first, before trying to remove RAM. If you are ensure on how to restore the BIOS please look at this before trying: How can I reset CMOS or BIOS settings?

I wouldn't try the hard reset unless the normal defaults do not work. If neither work then try removing the RAM.

As far as I know yes, just keep your backup files/folders in a single folder in the root directory.  The restore program should ignore it since I believe its just a generic script that it runs.

I currently own a Dell 8700 XPS.  I am running Windows 7 Home premium.  It has an i7-4790 and it won't turbo boost.  I have checked the settings to make sure it is enabled.  When I run AIDA64 Extreme, it ramps up to 3.59 but won't push past that.  The temperatures are all good, I believe the highest it gets is 72 degrees C on one core with and average of 68 degrees C for the the processor.  I only run the test for 10 minutes.  I recently updated the bios from the Dell Support page and it is running version A11.
I also downloaded and ran Intel's processor diagnostic and it passed.  Dell's CPU scan didn't detect any errors either.
Any suggestions?

My PC went into a restore mode on its own after locking up.  It had been updated to Win10, but after the restore it was back to Win7.  Most of my files are there along with MS Ofiice and the related data files.  Missing are my email program (Mozilla) and files and my Quicken and files.  There are a number of locked files that return "access denied" when I try to open the file or directory.  I'm guessing everythign is there, just hidden.  i have not reinstalled Mozilla or Qbooks yet, just in case that buries the files deeper.
Someone suggested i reinstall Win10....MS said they would give me another install for free after the 7/29 deadline, but again, I want to see if I can recover my files.  There is no restore point to go back to since the Dell utility ran.  Any direction will be appreciated.

The light is sporadic, sometimes quickly flashing and then nothing..other times multiple flashes. My computer appears to be working fine.
I have searched all over the Dell site and can't find anything...I know on my laptop I have a flashing light next to the battery light..I have always assumed that is the processing light.
I feel like this something I should know; I just want to make sure that it is a normal thing.

A:What do the flashing lights mean on the front of the Dell XPS 8700?

Hi Troyj1972
Thanks for writing to us.
Do you see a cylindrical icon beside the light, it indicates the hard drive.
Which means there is a continuous access of data on the system which is indicated by the hard drive activity light. Even if you haven open any programs the HD activity will still blink as the windows is using few backend programs , drivers etc.
The system is working normal, nothing to worry about.

I am thinking about purchasing the STRIX 1080 to upgrade from my STRIX 970. Does the card work with the motherboard that comes with the 8700? Will the card fit (it is 11.73 in)? Will I need a better power supply (I have a 600w PSU installed)? Has anyone tried installing this card into an 8700 before?

I have the Dell XPS 8700 Desktop with a 2TB drive.  If I will be doing some video editing with Adobe Premiere CC, should I store all my video files on the OS C: drive? Or, should I purchase an additional internal hard drive (i'm thinking a WD Black 7200 4TB drive) to work off of?

The extra hard drive will help, as it will eliminate contention between the OS and video editing.

I have two identical Dell XPS 8700 for my kids. They use mainly for steam games.

Both running the Windows 10 AU.

Today on one of them, by son said a message popped up and asked to stop a service and he clicked yes. Then all there was, was a gray screen and mouse pointer. He came and got me. The pointer would move but nothing else responded. So I did a power shut down. On reboot, the machine took around 40 seconds from seeing the dell logo to the sign on screen. This seemed very long. So I rebooted the other machine to see how long it takes, and it was only 3 seconds from the dell logo to the sign on screen.

I do not know if the long boot time has been going on or just started with this issue.

I ran sfc /scannow and it said no issues.

I remember in September 2015 ( a year ago) I had an issue with this machine where on power on, all I would get is the spinning dots at the Dell logo and it would not boot into windows. I even let it sit there for 24 hours and just spinning dots. I even tried new install of windows where the machine would let me install new windows, but after updates, the same thing happened with the spinning dots.

After a tons of troubleshooting, a dell tech recommended pulling the cmos battery. I did that and from then on it booted fine.

So since the long boot time did not seem right, I pulled the cmos battery again. waited 30 seconds, put it back in and booted into bios, change the clock (not sure if I had to but did), and then reboot and n... Read more

You have a high end CPU and 8GB of RAM. You should NOT be having slowness issues, tbh.

Have you checked that the HSF is free if dirt dust and debris? Have you checked the CPU temps while under load?

Open msconfig and post everything under the STARTUP tab.

I recently tried upgrading my RAM to the full 32 GB capacity.
When i did this my PC would randomly crash with a power failure - not a BSD - a power failure.
This leads me to believe that either my PSU is failing or my Motherboard is failing. Most likey the PSU IMHO.
So, if i wanted to upgrade the PSU for a future/potential graphics card upgrade what watt PSU can i put in here?

I bought a Dell XPS 8700 last Aug ('15) for $999 from Costco online. We had problems almost immediately with the PC not powering up (at all). but since it occasionally worked, we waited too long to actually return the PC to Costco (beyond 90 days). We also did not install the PC until Nov '15 because we bought 5 PC's at once and it took time to install them all.
We called tech support and after four hours of getting the run around and "trouble-shooting" via phone with Dell's non-English speaking tech support staff, they finally agreed to send out a technician. Technician replaced power supply and on/off button. We thought it was fixed but no. We didn't really call Dale back because we never had time to spend another three or four hours on the phone and schedule another technician just way too time-consuming for us to do that and run a business so instead we suffered a long barely using the computer and using other computers that were working fine instead.
Fast-forward the clock today May 30, 2016. The computer is still under warranty till August 2016 I call Dell and explain the situation, and that we've already unsuccessfully had a field technician trying to fix the problem and they were unable to do so. I respectfully ask that they send a replacement computer as we didn't have the time to spend another 2 1/2 days troubleshooting with their phone tech-support team, and also field technicians they declined, stating that I should've cal... Hello ?

Not sure if I am right at this place?

I bought a Dell XPS8700 desktop in late 2014. I started out with Win 8.0 Home. From the very beginning, I had BSOD crashes. I updated to Win 8.1 Home, Win 8.1 Pro and now to Win 10 Pro, hoping that the problem will disappear with a newer OS. However, I still have those crashes (very annoying when working on important documents!). My drivers are up to date and the computer is free of viruses etc.

As far as I have found, this problem might be related to the PCASp60 and/or NIDS6 driver/key. However, there is no PCASp60 driver on my computer (and apparently not needed based on various sources, which I either cannot confirm or not confirm). If I delete one or both keys in the registry, there are still crashes, though. The system error message is always the same:

?The PCASp60 NIDS Protocol Driver services failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.?.

I did some more research and found that these drivers seem to be related to the Realtek PCI onboard LAN unit. But even if I disable the LAN in the BIOS and delete all Realtek drivers in System/MyDevices, the error still exists and my computer crashes.

I am wondering if this is a general problem/unresolvable error of this computer or if it can be resolved..?

I am close to exchanging the motherboard or even switching back to HP computers (which always worked very well for me in the past 15 years).

Thanks in advance for any comments an... Read more

I can see from the forums that this issue is occurring often with many users. Thus far, I cannot see a fix, despite extensive reading on the subject, without recourse to a new graphics card and PSU. Is it not about time that Dell owned up to this and issued new cards or at least gave the information required to solve the problem? A:Dell XPS 8700 with AMD Radeon R9 270 - random black screens and shut downs

*Which* 8700 system did you buy?
The system that you bought was *fine* for how it was delivered and "spec'ed" for.
The system that you bought was *not* designed to allow the user to do "any type of upgrade" they wanted.
For *most* XPS 8700 systems, an MD Radeon R9 270 is far past what the system was spec'ed for.
Dell offers *many* *options* in building systems. :-)

You can't get a "high-end" desktop, and expect it to be able to be used like a hard-core gaming or graphics workstation.
From what I saw, the MD Radeon R9 270 requires a "big" power supply.

Since that advanced graphics card also generates a lot of heat, the *system* has to be designed to allow for that extra heat.

For the XPS 8900, Dell has their "extreme" series.
That's what's *required* for advanced graphics cards, *unless other mods are done to the system*.
For one, I strongly suggest a heat-sink upgrade along with a bigger power supply.

Imho, if people want an gaming system, then Dell sells gaming systems. :-)

I recently installed a SSD hard drive on my new Dell XPS8700 and installed a fresh copy of Windows 8 using the OS disc provided by dell. After completing hours worth of windows updates and driver updates, i go into bios and switch back to UEFI mode only to get a bios error when booting.

The error message that displays is:

No boot device available. Strike the f1 key to reboot, f2 to run the setup utility.
Sata 0: Installed
Sata 1: Installed
Sata 2: Installed
Sata 3: None
Sata 4: None
Msata: None

I booted into the Windows 8 OS Disc and formatted the second hard drive and about 3-4 partitions it had using the "repair disc" tools provided in the OS Installation options. Also formatted while in windows 8 as a simple drive in NTFS with a drive letter.

I found something else on the internet that mentions using bootrec.exe tool. I've tried the scanos, fixmbr, and fixboot options; even though it says it completed successfully, it did nothing whatsoever. The /scanos detects no installation.

I'm still getting the error and the only way around it is switching to legacy mode. Does anyone know a way to fix this issue without having to reinstall the OS in UEFI mode?

A:Issue loading in UEFI mode after setting up Windows 8 on SSD on Dell XPS 8700

I ended up reinstalling Windows 8 from the disc. Apparently with Dell, when booting off the OS disc in UEFI mode, the dell logo appears and it pretty much freezes there for a few minutes til it loads Windows 8 installation process. This, I accidentally found out after having to get off the computer right when the dell logo appeared on my screen after selecting option to load off boot disc. Figures. None of the dell techs told me it would take a few minutes either. Either ways, I'm going to run hardware tests afterwards to make sure there is nothing wrong with any of my parts after windows update is complete.

You have an old DVD which has Windows 8.1 Pro and Home. When installing it automatically picks up your Windows 8.1 Home key and hence selects that edition automatically, installs and activates.
You can do this and then use get features with a new edition of Windows:
However I would recommend just downloading Windows 8.1 (with Update 1) Pro Installation Media and installing Pro directly:

Most of that "bloatware" can be safely removed with "Revo Uninstaller" or a program like that. Just watch out what you are removing, some of that stuff maybe good for your computer. If you don't have it, make a rescue disk first.

Hi I've had the Dell XPS 8700 for over a year now and it's an excellent Desktop.
I've recently moved my tower to a new location and notice there is a solid orange light on all the time inside the PC, I believe it's on the motherboard... should I be worried this is on all the time? It's just I've never noticed it before.
Also on the back of the PC there is a solid green light, I'm guessing this is to just tell me the PC has Power.
I tried a google search but everyone with the orange light seems to have PC issues, my pc is working fine as far as I can tell.

A:Dell XPS 8700 Orange Light inside and Green Light on Back

LED on the motherboard will be on as long as the PC is plugged into a working outlet. It's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
If you unplug the PC from the wall and press/hold the power button for ~15 sec, that LED will go off. Again, perfectly normal...
Green LED says there's power to the PSU.

When I powered up my new dell xps 15 9550 this morning, (bought less than 1 week ago) I had a message from Dell in the bottom right hand corner of the screen saying there was a firmware update notification. I clicked on this and proceeded to update the firmware.
since this, I have been suffering from the screen going blank and the only way to get it back on again is to switch off the laptop completely!
I have restored the bios to factory settings (F2) and have also tried disabling the nvdia video card but still have the same problem of the intermittent screen going black.
At the same time, if I am listening to music, the music also switches off, so it doesn't appear to be just a video card problem.
It all appears to point to this firmware update?!
any help would be much appreciated.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have this Dell laptop which keeps blue screening on me. I either get a kernal_data_inpage_error or kernal_stack_inpage_error.

last code I got was:
Stop 0x0000008e (0xc0000006, 0xbf806542, 0xf12c9b10, 0x00000000)
win32k.sys address bf806542 base at bf800000, datestamp 41107f7a

This is happening constantly and I am at a loss. I replaced the hard drive by making using Acronis true image. I also tried to do a system restore and it won't do it. I tried it and it kept telling me it couldn't copy a bunch of files, so I ignored and figured I could do a SFC after I installed. I did that be I am still getting the errors. I seems to be a hard drive issue but the drive is new so it shouldn't be the issue.

A:Dell keeps crashing

I would suspect the RAM, but if it was software/driver related, using Acronis would just transfer the problem from the old to the new hard drive.

If you mean by "system restore" that you used the Dell setup disks, and that is when a bunch of files could not be found, that is an almost certain sign of a RAM problem.

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate , 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5300 @ 1.73GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 2
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 2046 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300, 128 Mb
Hard Drives:
C: Total - 114370 MB, Free - 23499 MB;
F: Total - 953866 MB, Free - 13542 MB;
H: Total - 38151 MB, Free - 4826 MB;
Motherboard: Dell Inc., 0XD720, , .2L5VX2J.CN4864373U6022.
Antivirus: None

What Happens:
The screen just goes blank (sort of, the back light goes off and what was on the screen is frozen) and any sound playing at that time repeats a few milliseconds over and over, only thing I can do is turn it off.

The problem happens when I'm starting up after being off for a while, and will usually happen 2-3 times until its "warmed up", or when I'm using a demanding application like Visual Studio, Ableton Live, any Adobe product etc. but weirdly not when playing back HD video. I use a CPU temperature monitor and have noticed that it seems to happen more when the cpu is cooler .

I've reinstalled windows, and it hasn't done anything so I'm pretty sure its a hardware issue, can anyone offer any help?

So I have a Dell Inspiron N5040 that I purchased brand new, around a year ago. It worked fine until about 3 months ago. I will randomly be online checking my email or scrolling through music on Itunes and it just crashes. When I'm online (using chrome) The help center pops up, and in the search box a bunch of numbers and symbols type all on its own and I can't control it and then it just turns off. Sames happens with Itunes, the help box will pop up, then it will freak out go crazy, type a few letters numbers and symbols then turn off. It is happening more and more frequently now and I can't stand it. I've tried restoring, I've tried Re installing Windows 7, I do not know what it is. If you can help me out, it will be very appreciated.

Any chance the laptop is still under manufacturer warranty?

Has the fan and vents been cleaned lately? How are the temps?

If still happening after re-installing the OS and updating drivers then you most likely are looking at a hardware failure.

Ok so I have had my dell dimension for nearly 3 years with few problems. Up until recently I was able to play Lord of the rings online fine on this machine as long as I kept the graphics on low. Then suddenly about a week ago I started having system errors and it shuts down occasionally. I have recieved the error message:

The ialmrnt5 display driver has stopped working normally ... it then instructs me to restart my system to restore the display.
I have also recieved the blue screen with the error code:

I have not installed anything new on my system but don't know if it was an automatic update that has messed it up. I started having this same issue with my Inspiron N5040 just a few weeks ago, of course just past their yr warranty. I ran Windows Diagnostics, CCleaner, a virus check, etc etc. Computer would go for a day or so fine, then would start shutting down every 20 seconds. Reboot would either say Windows 7 and give me a choice for a diagnostic tool, then shut down before I could use it. Or it would give me the choices of normal Windows startup or safe mode, etc.

I took the laptop to Best Buy after running my own tests at home. They left it on for a week with no problem, cleaned the fans out, checked the battery, ran a full diagnostic on both hardware and software. They got the same results I problems.

I am now running the laptop without the battery for 2 days with no shut downs. This morning, I put the battery back in to see if it shuts down. Thinking it's the battery, even though Best Buy's tests shows it was OK.

Laptop is not warm anywhere to my touch and Best Buy did not find it overheating. I keep it on my bed and my cats lay on the bed. Wondering if it's clogged with cat hair and dust, and if so, would that cause this issue? After reading others' posts here, I am wondering if this is a fault in this laptop. And if so, why can't any tech find that problem and fix it?

Hello Everyone,

I'm an owner of a Dell Xps 630i (I know, i know) and for a full year almost there have been no real issues, the random crash here and there obviously but now its been having strange crashing issues. Specifically, the machine will crash at a seemingly random interval, and not a BSOD crash, a "monitor is now in power save but the audio continues for about 15 seconds before entering a crash loop" crash. *Once the computer crashes, the screen goes black and becomes totally unresponsive, no Ctrl+Alt+Delete, no picture, no nothing except the sound that was playing, and about 5-30 seconds into the blackout the sound starts a short crashloop of whatever was happening at the time, generally a loud repetetive undulating noise.* It often crashes while playing games, i.e. World of Warcraft or Civilization 5 but recently it has crashed while idle (about 20 minutes after startup) and then while i was attempting some overvoltage changes on the BIOS (read about them as a possible fix on the dell support site) it crashed again within i'd say 2 minutes of startup while i was still in the BIOS.

I have attempted to fix this issue, although i have not had lot of time to work on it yet, since i have to go to work and its a recent issue. What i have done though, has seemingly had no effect. I have updated practically all the drivers, taking special caution with the audio and video drivers, did clean uninstall and reinstalls of both, and i also made sure all wi... Read more

Hello, I've owned this laptop for just over a year and for the first few months it functioned perfectly fine with no issues. I encountered some problems with over-heating but I managed to fix it with some compressed air and cooling pads.

Around 8 months ago it suddenly just stopped working whilst it was plugged into the AC adapter, and when the laptop would crash the screen would turn black and any sound playing at the time would be looped (Proving it's not a monitor issue).

I tried to hook it up to an external monitor anyway, which yielded the same results.

I contacted Dell and they came in 4 visits replacing both the motherboard, graphics card (three times) the heat-sync the keyboard, changed the hard-drives, it has been reformatted around 5 times and still the issue continues.

The issue itself being at any random time the laptop will crash and the screen will turn black, it only happens when the laptop is plugged into the mains. I've tried replacing the AC adapter through dell and still the same issue occurred.

I've kept drivers up to date, I've tried literally everything I've read and I'm stumped.

The only way to get out of the crash is to hold down the power button for 10-30 seconds to manually shut down the laptop.

After all that Dell has done and even providing another laptop it will be fantastic if anybody can come up with another idea.

I suggest a change of habit if the battery still has decent life. Try to use the PC just on battery, and then charge it when the laptop is shut down or hibernating. I realize that is not always convenient or possible.

I got my girlfriend a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop for christmas and it has been having some problems. It has 2 gigs of ram (came with one, but I upgraded to two gigs I bought on and runs on an AMD Sempron 3600+.

The two main problems involve the computer crashing.

1. Sometime at start-up, it seems to start fine and then will go into a blue screen with some white horizontal lines and restart on it's own.

2. Lately, the computer screen will go black but computer still seems to be running. The only way to get out of this is to do a hard reboot.

Any thoughts on what this might be? Is it a Vista problem or a hardware problem.

Let me know what you think.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop and it has a strange problem. The pc will run for a few hours and then all of a sudden it starts to make a clicking noise and it will freeze and most of the time the old blue screen of death pops up. It it sits for a while it will boot up again without no problem. I bougth a used hard drive that I found very cheap on Ebay and that did not solve the problem. I think it is some kind of a power issue because I noticed that earlier I was using the same battery all of the time and it would last only a few minutes before crashing. After I swapped batteries it ran longer but still crashes after some time. I always have the power adapter connected as well because the batteries are old and do not last long at all. The fans run correctly so I don't think it is a fan problem. I cannot really tell where the clicking noise comes from. Has anyone seen this type of problem before with the Dell 8000 inspiron? Any suggestions?

Recreated users profile - no effect
checked Memory Memtest and HDD with WDDiag - all green

My preferable solution would be to do a clean installation as we have 2nd laptop of same configuration which is running fine, however its not an option at this moment as setting and configuring all the software present would take took long (but I guess will be part of the problem).
I have attached the explorer.exe crash dump as found in one of the tutorials.

Hey there,

Welcome to the forum. Just throwing some ideas out there:
When did this issue start to occur?
Do you know if you have any recent restore points?
If you know the exact date of when the issue started to occur, use a restore point prior to the date of the issue occurring.
If you need further help with restore points, here's a good tutorial on how to use them.

Hope this helps!

All the best,

About three months ago, my wife noticed the laptop was crashing when she'd wake it up.  The error was "Bad Pool Header."   It would reboot and everything worked fine.  I couldn't find anything online about it and I was tired of being haunted with the Windows 10 upgrade.  So I went ahead and upgraded the laptop to Windows 10 hoping the issue would resolve itself.    It didn't.  I received the same error.
Today I took some time and researched the error some more and tried to contact Dell Support.   That didn't go so well.   Since I bought a refurbished unit from Amazon, the laptop is still registered to someone else.  They won't talk to me until the warranty information is updated.  (That's a separate battle I'm fighting with Amazon.)
Anyways, I'd love to restore the laptop to the original settings but the laptop doesn't have a DVD drive nor does it have a restore partition.  There is also no recovery image saved on the drive.   So, I'm stuck unless there is a way to find out what is causing the bluescreening.
When I was troubleshooting today, I had the system checked and there was one update that installed for the chipset.   After the chipset update was installed, the issue remained, but the error changed.  "System Service Exception"    The laptop reboots and it returns to normal.

Hi Dave,
Update the BIOS -
And reinstall the chipset drivers manually from the same site above.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. Also, run an extended / thorough test on the memory and HDD.
Run a stress test on the system -
The system is compatible to work with Win10. If you are keen to restore the system to W8.1 - then see this link -
If you have the invoice of the purchase, which states the service tag of the system - not a paypal receipt, then you could transfer the warranty ownership online here -
Write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Hello, I've recently been having problems (past 4 weeks or so) with my laptop crashing. Sometimes the screen will completely freeze and neither the mouse/keyboard or power switch do anything so i just have to wait until the battery runs out to reboot. Other times the BSOD will appear, usually only for a few seconds and then the computer shuts down or the screen goes black.
The problem occurs at any time even when there are no applications running. After looking for hours on the internet to the solution i decided to come here because the advice which people are given appears to of a good and helpful standard. Ive tried doing basic troublshooting of hardware/ reinstalling any recent software etc. but my technical knowledge is quite limited when it comes to computer crashes. Below are details of my pc and a zip of files which may help to solve the problem.

Manufacturer: Dell

Model: Studio 1747

Processor: Intel Core i7
CPU [email protected]

Installed memory (RAM): 6.00GB

System Type: 64-Bit Operating System

OS: Windows 7 x64 OEM

The computer is about 6 months old.

Thanks in advance for your help and time.

A:Dell 1747 Crashing /BSOD.zips included. Help!

i found a solution to the freezing problem on the dell 1747 studio. i had the same issue, but i also had another issue which was the windows loading (which took like 20 minutes to get to the start up desktop screen).

the solution is, never put your laptop into sleep mode. change the settings in control panel, and the start menu to "HYBERNATE".

i dont know why the dell 1747 has issues after waking from a sleep. but i do know that after your laptop wakes from sleeping tends to freeze after several minutes.

it took me ages to try google and find a solution but no one had an after i changed the settings to hybernate... i have not had one freeze (mmm well i did one but there was a reason for it - i was downloading like 10 big files at one time, and i was playing a PC game).

hybernating takes a little longer than sleep mode, but it does the job. it must be some sort of hardware (possibly ram) issue.

Hey, everyone. I just bought this new XPS 13 9035 and I'm at a loss for all of the issues I've run into since turning it on.
Out of the box I was getting BSODs (kernel_security_check_failure) when trying to connect to my work network which prompts a web page to sign in. I didn't encounter this when connecting to Starbucks or my home networks. Unrelated to the BSOD, the computer would freeze at times and the screen would go black. Only thing that would fix it was a hard reset.
After I managed to update Windows and a hand full of drivers, I'm still encountering these issues, but the black screen/freezing seems to have gotten more common. It seems to happen most when I'm browsing the web or playing a video (I use Chrome), but at other times I'll just be using MS Word and it'll crash.
-Ran the Driver Verifier and the computer couldn't start. I've included all the minidumps I had, but there didn't seem to be one generated by the Driver Verifier error.
-Sfc /scannow reveals errors that Windows can't fix.
-Memory Diagnostics Tool reveals no errors.
-Don't know if it's all related, but my administrator account lost Start button/Cortana/Action Center functionality a couple hours ago. Some tinkering in the PowerShell window couldn't fix it, but I created a new account with administrator permissions and the Start menu, ect., works fine in the new account only.

Hi; new to the forum so apologies in advance for being clueless.

Massive thanks in advance to anyone who can try to help with my problem!

I've had this laptop just over a year and had no problems until recently, when I restored the machine to factory settings on the advice of a friend who works in IT (I'd had some problems, possibly AVG-related and couldn't boot up at all). No other changes have been made to hardware or software - in other words it's the same setup that's worked fine up until now.

At first (for 48 hours or so) everything seemed fine. Then, for several days after restoring the settings the laptop would boot to Windows but freeze up completely 2-3 minutes later and I had to power off and try again; I tried changing power usage and sleep / hibernate settings but the outcome was the same again and again and the amount of time before it froze wasn't sufficient for me to download updates or drives in case that is the problem. Once it froze I got no response from CTRL+ALT+Delete but if I C/A/D before the freeze I get a black screen (only the pointer visible) for 30 seconds, then an error message box saying "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog - Failure - security options".

Finally I left the laptop on overnight to boot windows normally, since I'd noticed on occasion one or two functions did seem to be working, just extremely slowly. Now I have BSOD w/ messages and can't enter Safe Mode (the computer restarts and offers me... Read more

I've formatted the parition a few times.

It is a partitioned drive on this computer, trying to install vista home premium because my work people don't support win 7 64bit.

I have to have up to sp2, but every time I install sp 1, the comp restarts a couple times finishing the install process then when it should start up normally during bar going back and forth across screen it bluescreens for a second and restarts computer.

I make sure and install all the chipset/video/hardware drives first, but it doesn't make a difference. I've tried through both the auto updater and downloading straight from the microsoft website.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you get a long enough glimpse at the blue screen (near the bottom) to tell what is causing the error?

If you can get to safe mode and are able to access the internet, you might download blue screen viewer and run it to see what is causing the issue.

I have a four year old HP with upgraded sound, video and power supply. Its been running fine until the hard drive crashed last week.

I bought and installed new hard drive and a new version of XP thinking this would be easy. I've crashed and received every error message there is.

Original hardware:
HP A450N
Pentium 4/3.0 GHz
Motherboard ASUS P4SD
w/ serial ATA Ultra DMA/150SATA

Old HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 model ST3160021A
New HDD Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST350630A PATA/100

When I try to install XP it keeps hanging up during the copying files session (usually stopping on the same files). I keep hitting enter to force the copy until it eventually goes to a STOP Error.

I've indidually pulled every piece of hardware and memory to try and locate the problem. Even installed a brand new CD driver to boot from but still crash.

Here are some of the errors:

STOP: 0x0000000A (0x3bd2311C,0x00000002,0x00000000,0x8081624f)

setupdd.sys - Address F84BC309 Base at F819B000

STOP: 0x00000050 (0xCDC18000,0x0000000,0x8090EAB7,0x00000000)

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc000001D,0x808257cc,0xF809950,0x0000000)

STOP: 0x00000074(0x00000003,0x00000002,0x80087000,0xX000014X)

STOP: 0x00000050 (0xF133240,0x00000001,0x48580007,0x00000000)

I thought this would be easy...and the solution probably is. Any takers?... Read more

A:New HDD, XP crashing at install

Well it seems like a RAM issue. Maybe it would still be worth testing the RAM:

I'd also check the CPU temp in the BIOS.

Or maybe the new drive is faulty. Test it too:

Recently I purchased an SSD drive from Crucial to replace and improve my HDD drive on my laptop. I downloaded/used the migrating software recommended by Crucial (Acronis) since it came with a free activation code. However, after following the steps via Acronis and installing the SSD, my laptop is not functioning properly. After anywhere between 1 to 10 minutes of use, my laptop OS (Windows 10) will crash and I have to restart the laptop
I think the BIOS is recognizing my SSD as an HDD for some reason too (pics in imgur album). Please help.
Laptop: Lenovo V570
Changed: 500GB HDD to Crucial MX200 SSD
Migrating Software: Acronis True Image 2015 (I used the backup and recovery method, by migrating everything to my external hard drive).
Here is the current configuration:
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

While installing XP Pro over WinME on my g/fs computer... about half way thru it says some files were missing and prompts me to skip file and continue. I did just that. Suddenly XP hangs on me so I went with a reformat of her drive. I used a WinME start up disk.. and when asked to "start windows with CD rom support" or not.. I choose start with CD rom support. After the reformat I popped in the WinXP Pro CD in drive D: and restarted the computer. Nothing happens.. I tried her HP System recovery CD as well but nothing. It says " Not ready reading drive D:" even tho there is a CD in there. I've been in BIOS to change the boot ups..and still nothing happens. The CD is in the drive.. the light flickers..but nothing. HP will not help me without personal info from my girlfriend.. and the computer store down the street will charge a minimum of 65 dollars to fix .. or at least try to fix this problem.

If anyone has had this problem..or know what I should try next.. could you please help?.. Computer issues really get me stressed and worked up.. especially when I don't know where to go next.

Thanks for your time and responses

I was having a freezing problem in Windows XP, so I thought it was time to update to Windows 7 and start fresh. Updated to Windows 7 64 bit and had a driver problem with my wireless network cards. I did go into Device Manager and remove those devices except one... I just did it now. It only occurs after long periods of gaming at the moment. I also hear a clicking sound every 6 seconds.
Oh and I have had a stable computer for awhile.

I can't make heads or tails of your dmp. My suggestion is to run SFC and test your ram. Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder.. Boot from the CD, and run at least 5 passes.

I've recently bought a new computer with an XP tester installed. Having never installed an operating system before I was sure what to do.

I put the XP pro disk in the CD ROM drive and followed the instructions for a new install. The install never completes and appears to crash mid install. I restart the computer and the install process automatically starts up again. Once again freezing at a different point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:XP install crashing

I myself have had problems with xp installing. What is crucial though is at what point does it crash??? Im asking this because it could either be memory or a hard drive problem. Try booting up from the cd rom again, re-format the hard drive (not choosing the quick option). also are there any error messages? try this and see what happens.

I know many people seem to have this same problem of the install crashing / unresponsive at the "starting windows" screen. I tried the solutions that others had, but none seem to work for me. Here's my setup

- AMD Phenom X4 955 Black edition
- MSI 890GXM-G65
- Mushkin 2GB DDR3 1333
- WD 160GB HDD (SATA3)
- Samsung DVD burner (IDE)

It's pretty minimalist, setting it up for my mom to use. Anyways... I tried both a retail Win 7 and one from my MSDN subscription, neither worked. I know the disc is good, I was able to install it in a VM.

I tried disabling USB and USB 3.0, on-board audio, and LAN but nothing seems to work. Sometimes it gets suck at "starting windows", sometimes at the region/language selection screen.

Does anyone know if maybe the board is not compatible for some reason? Maybe some other devices on the board that's not compatible? I wasn't too sure how to mess around with the on-board graphics so I left it at the default settings. I'm connecting a monitor through VGA.

Thanks! Any help will be much appreciated
