large folder vanished

Q: large folder vanished

Hello. New user here looking for some help. I was cutting and pasting 4 media folders from C:/media/movies to C:/media/TV shows
I cut them. Clicked my media folder link to open it in file explorer and the TV shows folder was missing.
It was just there 5 minutes prior because I was looking to see what files I had there already and what I needed to move over. This folder was pretty large...30ish shows with multiple seasons. I believe it's too large for the recycle bin, but I checked there anyway. I also ensured the view hidden folders option was checked. I can see all other hidden folders. Not sure how that would have happened anyway. Also, a search for file names produces nothing. This is the only drive on the PC. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't notice a big increase of free space as if it was deleted. All other folders in C:/media ate still intact.

A: large folder vanished

Just FYI - I no longer use "cut".  I always use "copy", then I go back and delete if it's not needed.
I've lost too many files that way
If you've cut and it hasn't appeared, try pasting again to see if it was just a glitch
Try GetDataBack Simple from here:
The free version will tell you if there's something left to recover - then they'll want money if you want to recover it.
You can also use the free PCInspector from here:

Hi all,

A while ago I created a folder on my desktop which I turned into a toolbar by dragging it to the edge of the screen. Today, I turned on my pc, and suddenly the toolbar is empty and the folder gone! I have tried scanning the pc with several file recovery programs (recuva, adeona, and panda) none of which found a trace of any files or the folder itself (not even unrecoverable ones). Another strange thing is that I don't seem to have any extra hard disk space available compared to before this happened, so the files must still be somewhere, right? Does anybody have any idea what else I could try?

(I am running windows vista home premium on a compaq presario notebook)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

A:Vanished folder

Try a system restore or even last known good configuration ! Or have you opened up your hidden files and folders and had a look in there but i would definately try a system restore !
Good Luck !

this has hapend to me twice now. The first one was when all of a sudden i realised that my pictures' folder icon had changed and become a normal folder icon. I looked around the internet and found this command 'rundll32 mydocs.dll,PerUserInit' I ran out, but it didnt change the icon, however it did manage to delete my pictures' folder. I wasnt too bothered as it didnt have any pictures of any consequence but it did puzzle me. I tried a couple of the basic recovery softwares, managed to find a few but nothing major.

Now this second event hapnd yesterday. I Store all my photos in my seagate external hard drive. So yesterday i was uploading the latest pictures from last weekend's trip. I uploaded all of them, and then I changed the icon of the folder to the one where it shows its a picture folder. Then I went one level up and corrected the spelling error on that folder's name. there lo and behold the folder next to it just vanished. it was a big big folder had pics and videos from my mates wedding.

I use a sony vaio laptop, with win xp sp2. I have zonealarm firewall, avg antivirus/spyware, spybot. I checked with all of these, no problems here. I once again tried the recovery softwares, but to no avail.

Now heres the thing, if you check the properties of the parent folder for the size and then if you add up the size of the secondary folders, theres a difference of about 300 mb. I think it must be the wedding album. I did the same thing for my old problem.... Read more

A little while ago I got a virus in my system32 file and in the flurry of norton that followed my entire system32 folder disappeared from windows explorer. It's still accessible through DOS and I copied its contents into a new folder so I could use notepad and whatnot and it hadn't been a problem. But now some other programs are having problems initializing, specifically SoftIce NT which won't start at all since it has the critical ntice.sys file in system32 (which is there when using DOS). If anyone knows anything about this please reply.

May sound silly but have you searched 'My Computer' for system32 including hidden/system files?

Hi, I had a folder named "167". I changed it to "167..." to remind myself there were other folders between that number and the next that I still needed to collect. When I off-clicked into the window after renaming it the folder disappeared. I used the search bar and visually searched through the folder, both with show hidden folders on, but without success. Any information on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

A:Folder renamed and vanished

I don't believe using extra periods is the proper way of changing the name of a folder. Other than just doing a search folder and going through all of them I don't know of a way of finding that folder.

I have a folder called Google Sketchup which contains numerous Sketchup models representing about 20,000 hours of work. It is on a USB drive (H) in the root directory. I have backed it up but a long time ago.

I edit it regularly and I got tired of scrolling down to "G" so I clicked on the H drive in Windows Explorer on the left then on the right pane I renamed it to 1Google Earth. The folder vanished completely. I therefore clicked Edit/Undo Rename. It is still gone. I did a search for "Google Sketchup" and it is not found. HELP!

I know that sometimes when I have done similar things in the past the file or folder is still there but just does not show up. I am not game to do anything that might risk losing it altogether as it is my entire life at present.

I am on Vista Home Premium.

I was confused enough to register here and see if anyone else has had this happen to them (or heard of this happening);

I recently lost the charger for my cell phone, which i also use as an alarm clock. Therefore, I went to download.-com and downloaded and ran both "Karen's Alarm Clock 3.0.3" and "Easy MP3 Alarm Clock 1.0" -- both are free and I trust download.-com (or did, until today). In retrospect, I wish I'd read the description on the latter program; it basically vomited adware all over my system. (i run winXP and ran iexplorer, although I switched to firefox within the last half hour)...

On to the wierd events of this afternoon: I'd recently switched from winamp to the free windowsXP version of iTunes (i like the accessibility of the playlists, etc) I've spent a lot of time organizing with the player, and had it open on my desktop. It took me a few minutes to notice the computer was running slowly (the Task Manager box in the tray gave it away), that and the 'speed' of the computer.
At first when i moved itunes and the desktop remained blank behind it, i assumed Windows was simply slow in refreshing the main desktop. However, on further inspection, all text files, documents, mp3 files and .exe files (including those for the above recently downloaded programs) are gone. MIA, although i'm hoping, not irretrievable...

I immediately went into lockdown mode; I already had the task manager running... Read more

You may have trouble believing this, but the ENTIRE WINDOWS FOLDER on the hard drive has vanished. I've been using my machine as usual although am having some bad problems, such as not being able to download/install since Windows Installer is also gone. I guess that's part of the Windows.system 32 stuff that disappeared.
I have a bad feeling I'll have to reinstall Win 7. How in the world could something like this happen? I have the old Windows folder from XP on the drive but no Win 7. Fortunately, I obssess over backing up and have Carbonite, Acronis True Image, Windows BU and everything on Seagate external drives. Many thanks for your ideas. ec

A:Entire Windows folder has vanished

As you have everything backed up and if it's a Dell have a look at the factory restore option in the information below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

Turn on the computer.

2 As the computer starts, press <F8> on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.

You must press <F8> before the Windows logo appears on the screen. If you press <F8> after the Windows logo appears on the screen, the Advanced Boot Options menu will not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen.

3 Press the <Down Arrow> on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press <Enter>.

4 Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.

5 Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.

6 Click Dell Factory Image Restore.

7 In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.

8 Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.

9 Click Next.
The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.

10 When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.

So I was helping a friend with his computer, and noticed his Norton AV had expired. I uninstalled the old AV, and began to install Avast. As soon as I ran the Avast setup program, it would open for a second, and then disappear. I tried numerous times, each time, it would close after a second.

Thought that must be a bug, so I restarted in Safe Mode and tried running an HJT scan. Same thing happened, I'd double click on HJT and nothing would happen. I decided to give ComboFix a try, and ran it from safe mode. It found some junk and removed it, and then restarted. Upon restart, I told the computer to boot to safe mode, before the windows splash screen (or safe mode list of files), it quickly crashed and began rebooting again. I hit F8 for safe mode again, and this time it booted to a missing hal.dll error.

Using another computer, I tried locating hal.dll, but immediately noticed that the entire system32 folder was missing. Hidden files and Operating System files are shown. I have tried using attrib to make the folder visible, but I get a file not found error. I searched the hard drive for hal.dll and only found a version in the i386 folder.

Anyway, has anyone run into this before? Any suggestions on where the system32 folder might have gone? I tried Easy Recovery to see if it showed up as a deleted file/folder, but it didn't.

A:System32 Folder vanished - Can't boot

That's a good adventurous idea, trying to install over it and then recovering the registry from the previous version. I haven't had that problem before but at my previous workplace people were always mistakenly moving folders around on our development servers.

So, I think it's probable that system32 is still on the computer.

And if you're going to try fixing his problem like that, it seems as logical to burn someone's system32 folder, copy it to his PC, then try to boot, or to then recover the registry.

I opened up Windows Media Player and noticed all my Album art wasn't displaying and within a few seconds all the files disappeared. I thought I just needed to let Vista search for the files again & refresh the player but when I went to my Music folder to check the files there the folder was completely empty (apart from the hidden files).

I searched for the files in case they had been moved but no sign so I checked the disk space as there was a few thousand mp3 files involved. This confirmed the files were truly gone as a big chunk of space was now empty.

What happened? Was I hacked? Ran AV scan, Malwarebytes, Hijackthis etc. but nothing showed up. I'd be grateful if anyone can shed any light on what might have happened.

I backed up all my personal files to a external drive, then used DELL Backup & Recovery utility to restore the PC to the Brand New system state. Fine. While restoring files from the external drive I dragged my Music folder from the external drive to my personal folder. A window flashed a message briefly (not sure what) then I never saw my Music folder again on either drive. It happened too fast to have copied all the Music files to the destination C: folder. But I dont see them on the E: external drive either. Did not see in the Recycle bin. I did several other operations before thinking of using Control-Z. It is a 2014 Dell running Windows 7 Home Premium. Thanks for any help.

Does anybody know what is the meaning of (Total No. Items) in the Microsoft Exchange Administrator 5.5 Mailbox Resources option? (SP3 for Exchange installed)

If it means the number of UNREAD messages in my mailbox then I can not understand why while I have checked my mailbox and transfered the mails to my hard disk (there are 9 messages still appear to be in mail server) (I use POP3).

Actually, when I send an email message to myself I can see the Total number of Items increase by one (say 10). But when I check the mail server in order to get the message I see that it decreases by 1 leaving total number of items=9.

Does it mean that I have 9 UNREAD messages in my mail server and how can I read them?

ALSO, something strange happened. I sent an email message and THE MESSAGE DID NOT APPEAR IN THE SENT FOLDER. I think this is VERY BAD. Actually, that message that does not appear in the SENT folder, was finaly delivered one month later to the recipient. The problem appeared not only with the email addresses inside my LAN, but with recipients outside.

Please if you have any clue, help me...

A:{Advice Offered} - Messages vanished from SENT FOLDER

The items mentioned in that list reflect ALL the messages in your account, that are lying on the server: Inbox, Outbox, Deleted Items, Sent items, Notes, Contacts, etc

Anything that is connected with your account that is still sitting on the server. If you have the Outlook Web Access module installed, you might want to go in with that, and have a look to see what is still lurking in a directory in your mailbox.

As for the month between sending and receiving: Check your own computer's date. That problem is normally due to your own computer being 1 month ahead. Outlooks tells the Exchange server to deliver the message on the day you sent it (and it gets that info from your computer's BIOS. Now, if the BIOS is one month ahead, Exchange will keep that message until the day arrives when it can send it.

I'm using Windows XP Personal, Service Pack 3, Version 5.1 (Build2600) OS.

I work with themes a lot, including visual themes, icon themes, and sound schemes. I use Desktop Architect, IconTweaker, and TuneUp Utilities to create new desktop themes.

But now I can't save my themes to the 'Themes' folder anymore! And all the visual themes I had in the 'Themes' folder have vanished. The 'msstyles' and 'shellstye.dll' files are still there, and I can change and load them in the 'Windows and Buttons' box on the 'Appearance' Tab in 'Display Proprties'. Sound schemes are in tact as well as icon themes. If I restart the computer it will remember the theme I have on. I've copied my theme files, so i pasted them back into the 'Themes' folder, but when I try to load a theme it says 'Not a valid theme. A:XP Theme Files Vanished from Themes Folder

I believe I've solved this problem.

I made it worse trying to use the copies of the themes I had so I trashed them.

Then I went to a site through one of your posts that gave me the register fix for Luna and Windows Classic. I also downloaded the replacement Luna and Windows Classic theme files. I ran the registry fix and put the theme files in

Restarted the computer and the Windows XP theme worked and Windows Classic theme worked. But I still could not save a new theme...'Not a valid theme...'. So I decided to download 'uxtheme Multipatcher 8.0. Maybe I got one of the uxtheme.dll files corrupted. Oh, and after I installed it I restarted the computer too.

That did it, I can save theme files again, but I couldn't change 'Windows and Buttons' in the 'Appearance' Tab in 'Display Properties'. I decided to restore to the checkpoint prior to the last I used before. That restored everything to normal, but now have only three themes. Guess I gotta start over making themes.

Or do I? Funny thing was I found my original theme files in another folder! I don't know how they got there, but I found them in

Very strange. I removed them from the security folder and restored them to

And now it's all back the way it was! Only thing I can figure is maybe I accidently dragged the 'Resources' folder into the 'Security' folder since it is below the resources folder when I w... Read more

I'm having trouble with a game all of a sudden and I'm not sure if it's hardware or software related, so I may try to reinstall the game (even though it has been working perfectly fine for 4 years until now ) and see if that helps.

The game... NASCAR Racing 2003 Season... takes up about 15 gigs on my hard drive. I will burn most of the files to a CD, but I'd like to copy the entire folder or subfolders somewhere else on my hard drive (ample space) to make it an easier transfer later on.

The folder is 15 Gb. Will Windows let me copy and paste something that big? How long will it take?

Or is there a certain reasonable limit for each copy and paste? Don't want to make my CPU and hard drive explode to make matters worse.

A:How do I 'ZIP' a large folder in Windows 7

Launch Windows Explorer. Select all the files/folder you want to compress (you can also use CTRL+click to add more files). Right-Click > Send To > Compressed Folder. The ZIP will be located in the folder you are workin in. There is a tutorial if you need more info : Zip a File or Folder - How To

Here are screenshots of how it's done with the built-in zip feature :

If you want more features though, I recommend 7-Zip. It's lightweight, has a LOT of options, usually has better compression on ZIP (or you can use the 7z format which compresses even more), and is open-source : 7-Zip. It will add a context menu accessible via Right-Click in Explorer.

Last night, just before bed time, my wife informed me that she had seen, earlier in the day, a message indicating low disk space on our Windows 7 (Home Premium) Laptop. I took a look at the properties on C drive and it was down to about a half GB free space. This was on an 80 GB partition on which Windows is located. I ran Disk Cleanup and there is still only a bit less than 3 GB free space. I took a quick look at the properties of each folder at the root of C drive and found that the C:\Windows folder occupied about 48 GB. Isn't this way too much? Could this be related to Windows 10 to which we never upgraded? I'll look a little further this weekend to see if I can locate the bulk of the files, but I'm guessing I'm going to have to remove some Windows Updates or something, and if so, I'll likely need a little coaching on that.

Looking at the properties of my C:/Users/Pauline folder, it shows a size of 198Gb, yet opening the folder and viewing the size of each file and sub-folder, they add up to no more than 2Gb (I keep all the libraries and user data files on a separate drive).
Another user, myself, as C:\Users\Malcolm shows a size of 9Gb. Even this is much much larger than the sum of the sub folders, but I could live with that.
Going to folder options and showing hidden and protected files shows nothing in the way of very large files.

Your best bet would be to download an application like SpaceSniffer which would give you a graphical view of where the consumed space is going.

It's real easy to use. Just open the zipfile you download, drag the application to your desktop, and launch it.

I see your specs as Windows 7. You may want to right-click on the application and select 'Run as Administrator' which might give you a better view into folders that might otherwise be restricted.

Hi guys,

My C drive is getting full and I have 5GB of files in the C:\Windows\Installer folder. I google'd around and found numerous articles/posts about running a command "msizap.exe G!" to properly clear out un-needed files.

Everything I've found on properly deleting files from this directory points back to a download that used to be here:

which now has a note: "This article previously contained a link to the Windows Installer Cleanup utility (MSICUU2.exe). If you were directed to this article to solve a problem installing a product other than Microsoft Office, please contact your software manufacturer for installation support on the product."

I am puzzled why, as far as I can tell, everything else seems to be there except this one single folder.

This is what happened: I run registry cleaner section in Ccleaner, and following that it was giving me an error message that the locally stored profile can't load, and it could only log me on with a temporary profile. Needless to say, I could not access any of the things in my profile.

I took my computer to the service place, but first nothing was done for 3 days (3 very painful days without my computer and being worried about the fate of my things on it...) and then the IT guy did work on it some, but I don't know what he did and I don't think he did much or didn't get far in any case, because when I picked my computer up there was no difference.

After that I was searching for some answers or suggestions on various forums etc. I tried system restore but it could not restore it. Then I ran chkdsk and it worked, it repaired one file (ntuser) and then my profile loaded back, looking like it always did before, except that as far as I was able to remember, one single folder is missing.

I looked in the hidden files and folders (by doing: windows explorer : tools : folder options : view tab : check show hidden files and folders : uncheck hide protected operating system files : OK) but I don't see it there.

The folder I am talking about was probably quite large, containing many sizable word documents and a number of pdf files. I think it was in "my documents&... Read more

I have just received a running out of system disk memory notice on my Windows XP desktop computer. I was a bit surprised because I don't store much on the system disk, and as part of an exercise discussed on another thread here I had recently cleaned it up. I ran a scan with AVG free which came up with nothing and also Spybot S&D which cleaned out as many temp files as it could. After this I noticed one very large "hidden" folder remaining in the temp folder. It was called ~eu0000. In it was a single file called .eunf.
I have a dual boot so I could probably quite easily delete the folder and file, but before doing so I am curious as to whether it might have been caused by malware.

The composite image above shows the location of files on my very full system drive, as well as the results of the AVG scan.

This image shows the Windows temp folder (after the S&D cleanup) containing the offending large folder.
I should appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this.

i love portable .paf apps and pretty much download all i can find that i "might" use one day. every time i try to enter the folder i keep them in, explorer goes into the not responding state like it is
indexing all the files, or scanning them for some reason. i have defender off, do not use any software based firewall or any real time antivirus scanner at all. the process to enter the folder takes over a minute and every time i restart my system the same thing happens again. as long as i dont shut down then it is instantly accessible like all other folders on all my other hdds including the same hdd that the folder is on. it only seems to happen with the .paf files.

the folder is only 409 files at slightly over 5gb.

any suggestions?

It might do that once, but it should not be doing it every single time. You don't have to keep it in the Program Files folder, you can put it anywhere. I keep my portable apps in a folder off my C drive made for them, it never does this.

Clicking on a large folder in Explorer can cause a slowly-moving green progress bar. In some cases this can take several minutes to complete.

A common cause is thumbnail caching of image and video files, resulting from having properties | customize | "optimize this folder for:" set to pictures, vs documents or General items.

The most likely solution: in Explorer, right click on folder, select properties, customize, under "optimize this folder for:", select either General items, or documents. Set check box "Also apply this template to all subfolders", then click apply.

The slow progress bar is apparently caused by Explorer scanning the folder and all subfolders to pre-render thumbnail images for image and video files. This happens if the "optimize this folder" setting is pictures or videos. This happens when merely clicking on the top-level folder.

If "optimize this folder" is set to documents or General, the thumnails are not rendered until you actually click on the folder or sub-folder containing those.

This was discussed in another thread on this forum, but it was full of speculative remedies, and the actual cause and remedy was not posted until the last thread (and one year after the thread was started): Accessing drives in Windows Explorer takes a long time

I'm creating this thread with a more exact title and concise description, to aid in finding the solution based on a symptom search.

Try this:

1) Right click the folder and choose properties.
2) Click on the Customize Tab.
3) Choose Change Icon at the bottom
Pick an icon you want top use for the folder, then click ok.

You may have inadvertently clicked on a "white" space when choosing icons. (It is possible to create invisible folders in that manner, hence the black box.
Try right clicking on your desktop first, and click refresh.

I recently discovered a folder on my C: drive simply titled Boot. (Filepath is C/Windows/Boot) It is taking up 27 GB of my 37 GB available space. It wasn't always that large, but must have increased steadily in size in the almost 2 years I've owned the computer. This Boot folder has 4sub-folders, ranging in size from 4 GB to 10 GB, totaling the 27 GB, but when I open any of those 4 sub-folders, there are only a few files of a few KB each. This is not a hidden folder, and I located what I believe is theactual boot folder needed to boot up my computer. I am not able to delete the C/Windows/Boot folder or any of the folders or files inside of it. (It says I need administrative privileges, but I’m the administrator and the only user of the computer.) Starting a few weeks ago, this folder is causing me to continually get “Low Disk Space” pop-up bubbles. The other night, I cleaned up some spaceon my computer, ended up with 750 MB of free space, went to bed, and woke up to find I was down to 42 MB of free space. I suspect that somehow, stuff is automatically getting dumped into C/Windows/Boot. Would love to be able to fix this so I’m not always dealing with the “Low Disk Space” message. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. (Laymans terms please, if possible.) Thanks in advance.

I've got a little registry file that I run on all my new installs. One thing I been wanting to add to it is the ability to set the Folder View settings to "Large Icons" for "All Folders". The manual way to do this is...

- Open folder
- Right-Click > View > Large Icons
- Tools > Folder Options > View > Apply to Folders

So basically I'm looking for the registry key that I can change to set this via reg file. I've tried digging around in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU & Bags but it looks like those are for all folders. I'm looking for the one specific key/value that windows checks to determine what the folder view should be.

Thanks in advance!

I use OE 6 on an XP Pro platform, and I need to move a large block of business emails from one OE folder to another. There are roughly 8,000 emails in this folder, and I need to move half to a new folder so they will compact properly.

Is there a FAST WAY to "Select" or highlight 4,000 out of 8,000 emails? It would take hours to hold down the Ctrl key and individually click all 4,000. Using Edit>Select All will not accomplish what I need. In a regular Windows folder, one can hold the Ctrl key and drag the cursor beside a long list of files to select them. Is there any way to do something similar inside an OE folder? Thanks.

I have a small 64Gb SSD boot drive C:

I installed Windows ADK to enable EasusToDo imaging software to create a boot disk.

This has left 3 folders about 3Gb in size in my c:\users\me\appdata\local\temp folder

I have therefore very little free space left on the C drive.

The folder attributes are read only.

I as an administrator user have full access rights (confirmed in folder Properties) but when I try to delete the folders the error message asks for permission from me to delete. I give this permission, then it refuses, stating Try Again as it need permission from me.

This computer does not recognise boot CDs even though the BIOS order is set correctly. I was hoping to remove files using an Ubuntu live boot CD.

Windows Disk Cleanup utility just stalls - presumably it also cannot delete these files.

What to do?

I did google a few times but couldn't find a way to solve. I'm using Windows 7 pro x64 (I think I upgraded from windows 7 home edition). I had same problem last week but while I was cleaning out some stuff windows was updated so I had to restart....and then there suddenly was 17 gbs free space. But ever since last update my HDD is down to attachments.

I'm on laptop with followings:

ASUS N61JQ-X1 16-Inch Laptop

Windows 7 Home Premium

I'm using TuneUp Utilities 2011 (luckily the new guys who took over and messed up TuneUp stuff decided not to mess with anything before 2012 version) with Avast. As you guys can see from my attachments, Windows folder and System Volume Information alone are taking 50+ Gbs. I'm also wondering if I need all these crabs with amd64-microsoft-naturallanguages-blahblahblah? I have 84000 files of these craps. I do keep it hibernation which is about 3gbs. I moved system restore point to external HDD so no back up whatsoever in C drive, all games except few, which are located in D drive, are located in external HDD.

Is there any way I can possibly clean up from windows and system volume information without harming my computer? btw, I didn't do a single format ever since I bought this computer because it still runs smoothly. I have been using Windows XP Version 2002 Service Pack 3 for a while with few problems, and run Norton 360 which I continually make sure is up to date with no warnings.

The problem that I have been having is that I have twice now found that my C: drive, which has 144 GB of hard drive space, keeps filling up when just a few months ago I checked it and it was less than half full. I downloaded a free program which shows me the folder sizes in Windows Explorer, and found that the cause of the drive filling up were these huge log files in my kids' "My Documents folders". There were many such files, but for example, there was one called CAGC0bd49d6c000a072e.log which was over 18 GB in size. I just simply delete them and empty my recycle bin, but they seem to keep reoccurring.

I am curious what they are, why they are so big, are they dangerous, and can they be prevented?

Thanks so much for any help!!

Hi all.
I have had lots of videos on my hdd for some time now building up a collection of car videos/movies. there is roughly 50gb+ of videos on one partition, 17+gb of these vids are car videos. When I go into my car video folder my HDD light comes on and loads like crazy, and then when I try to open one it takes for ages.

Also another problem which mite be related that I have is, Files go missing, eg. a 700mb car movie. the file is still there it shows all the bytes in properties and that is all correct, but when I try to open it says the file has been "compressed" or something along those terms. I know its not the codec, as I have just about every codec and these movies have worked previously. Especially after reformatting my files go missing from each of my back up partition drives. at the moment, 3.77gb of my fighting videos will not open :(

If anyone can help me, i would appreciate it. its really annoying not to be able to use the stuff on your HDD.

Mr. SaKaTuMi

A:Loads very slowly after opening a large folder of videos

hmmm....defrag your hdd and see if that helps. a good defraggin tool is diskeeper and perfect disk. so far i have experiences with diskeeper and it works great and the program is hella fast.

also since you are running winxp, try booting up with your winxp cd. of course and im sure you know this, you will need to change the boot order in the bios to cdrom as first boot device.

then when you boot up with the winxp cd, choose repair in the main console and it will take you to a command prompt screen. type out " chkdsk /r" without the "". also you will need a space between chkdsk and /r.

after it has finish, bootup to windows and see if this fixes your problem. also scan your computer for viruses, spyware, and malware. good luck

For a while now my Windows folder has been taking up more space on my 60GB SSD than I think it should. The size breakdown goes like this:

C:/Windows - 28 GB

- winsxs - 11.65 GB
- System32 - 8.45 GB
- Assembly - 1.63 GB
- SysWOW64 - 1.30 GB
- Installer - 1.17 GB
- Microsoft.NET - 1.03 GB
- SoftwareDistribution - 0.85 GB

I do regular registry fixes and temp file cleans, and I do regular inspections on my drives to remove unnecessary files and programs. However, the large increase in my Windows folder which happened about 6 months ago is really bothering me.

Is there any way get rid of some excess files? Or is this just a case of Windows inaccurately showing the actual amount of free space due to hard links?

I am backing up my Win 7 folder just before moving to WIN 8. The folder is 65G in size. I just copy and paste from my laptop hard drive to my external USB drive. I started the copying just before I went to bed last night. This morning I saw a pop up windows saying that 12 files cannot be copied because the path is too long. The option is "skip' or 'Cancel'. I took the skip option and the copy job completed. But it does not tell me the name of the 12 files that I skipped.
Now my problem is how do I found out which 12 files are missing in my backup.
I know that I can do the copy paste again and watch out for the error message. But it is a waste of time sitting in front of the screen. That was why I do it over night.
What is the best way to do this kind of work other than using some backup software.

Okay I will do my best to try and explain this clearly.

I had one laptop hard drive crash/fail on I purchased a new laptop and transferred all my files over via a window's backup and crash plan backup to make sure I got everything. Now the new laptop is having the same issue as the old laptop--obviously there is a corrupt file somewhere. The hard drive on the new laptop has not failed--yet--but 308GB of my 750 HDD has been sucked up by these temp files. I have attached a word doc with 2 screen shots--first showing the main window with all of these tmp files and the second with one file opened.

There 99 of these tmp files, with roughly 200,000 items in each taking up a lot of HDD space. I tried to delete one of these folders and the process took forever and it got hung up.

First, what are these folders and has anyone heard of this kind of issue.

Secondly, is there a way I can delete these files by by-passing the recycle bin since these things are so large. I thought I read somewhere I could use cmd to do this, but am not sure how.

I've used CCleaner and Malwarebytes and neither touched these files. As a matter of fact the Windows\Temp file never seems to get cleared out unless I manually delete what's in there. I was able to delete other files in that folder, just not these. I am getting very concerned for the life expectancy of my new HDD.

Also, one final note. I ran a chckdsk scan. It got hung up at 74% on Stage 1 and refused to budge from there... Read more

I need to split a folder containing several levels of subfolders into dvdr sizes for backup. I would like to retain not only the folder name but subfolders names.

Ex. C:\Pictures\Summer is 7gb and i would like to split it into C:\folder1\pictures\summer and C:\folder2\my pictures\summer

Any one know of a util? RAR/ZIP is an option but I would really like viewable access to the files on any disc.

The folder I need to split is quite large 70GB.

A:Split large size folder into smaller ones retaining subfolder names

Your talking about 16+ DVDs for that one file. The odds of one of them being bad is quite high.

Why not backup to an external hard drive instead?

Also, most burner software will do this for you automatically. I know Roxio will for sure. It will put as much as it can on each DVD then prompt you for a new one when that is done.

This is similar to a post I made several days ago that only got one response, but this time I've really narrowed it down.

My computer has a problem specifically with the combination of the NTFS file format and JPG Files. I used to have my drives formatted as FAT32. I never had a problem going into Windows Explorer and expanding a folder full of JPG files. Even a really large folder, like 15Gb, would open instantly.

However, I recently converted all my drives to NTFS. Now any folder with over about 2Gb of JPG Files in it takes for bloody ever to expand! The bigger the folder, the longer it takes. For example, a 5Gb folder will take about 30 seconds. A 20Gb folder will take upwards of 2 minutes. It drives me crazy!

It's as if something in my computer related to the NTFS format is trying to catalog or make thumbnails out of all the JPG's in a folder before it expands that folder. However, I can't really support the "thumbnail" theory because all of my folders are set to be viewed in the "details" mode. I don't use thumbnails, icons, or mini-icons.

Any and all suggestions are welcome because I've been struggling with this for several days now and tried every trick I know.

A:Large Folder Full of JPG Files Takes a Long Time to Expand

Here are two items that might shed some light on how to fix the problem:

1. Once a large jpeg folder has been expanded (oh so slowly) in Windows Explorer for the first time, it will open instantly any time I come back to it as long as I don't turn off the computer. But once I restart the computer, I have to wait a long time all over again for any of the large folders to expand.

2. I just discovered by accident that if I use the "search" function before expanding any of the folders in Windows Explorer, all of the folders will expand instantly no matter what they contain or how big they are.

This seems to be telling me that once the operating system has "touched" each folder and file one time, it remembers them better then next time (until I reboot). I wonder if all of the folder/file information is getting dumped into RAM the first time it's expanded or searched? It seems like maybe this is an NTFS related cache issue. I have 2Gb of RAM, so I've experimented with turning off the page file (virtual memory), but it doesn't seem to make any difference whether it's off or on. There must be some other file caching system in NTFS that I'm not familiar with.

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.
- Restart the computer and the "explorer.exe&... Read more

I will shortly need to move a large number (20,000) very large (20-30Mb) image files and associated tiny xmp sidecar files from one hard drive to another.

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

A:moving large number of large files to new drive

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

My client's computer was infected with a virus obtained via Facebook. I removed this and multiple other infections (and I'm pretty thorough with my scanning). She gets it back, starts working on it, and apparently her devices and printers icons are blank. Not missing, like with a "blank page" icon, just... blank. Here's the kicker: it only happens with large and extra large icons. It also happens with normal folder icons. When I change it to medium or lower, they come back. I've tried rebuilding the icon cache database several times, tried sfc /scannow, tried chkdsk, tried uninstalling any recent updates, etc... There have been no hardware changes, the hard drive has been tested as good (no bad sectors), her dual monitors are at a sane resolution, and I'm confident that the viruses has been removed. Trust me -- I've tried all the obvious stuff I can think of. Thanks and Good luck!

Edit: Also, I did about 30 minutes of searching through previous threads. Couldn't find a thing, but I could have missed it...

Well you probably pulled some icon cache files off that were infected but also had the L and XL icons. If sfc didnt work you could try a repair install. It will re-install only the files with different hash marks.

Annoyingly, it will have a LARGE black area - or maybe a large area of something else - another colour

I print: I waste ink, lots of it - bad for the world, costly and expensive wasting that ink, if on an inkjet - also rubs off on you!!

Is there a printing program that examines large areas, if they are of a similar colour, substitutes it for a zigzag pattern of the same colour?

See below for a rough sketch of what I mean:

I did a quick search on google, couldn't find anything - but then again, I wasnt sure 'what' to search for!

I used the option that was supposed to keep my files. But when it was done reinstalling I have nothing no files, pics, videos. Nothing. A tech from emachines told me it was all still there , but I had to pay to find out how to retrieve it. I don't have a credit card. Can any one tell me how to get everything back. There is no uninstall windows xp on my computer.

Have you done a search on the computer to see if you can locate the missing files? They may simply be in another location or in a no orphaned user account that still exists on the computer.

FYI, doing a repair install was probably not the best choice to restore missing components.

It used to work fine about a week or two ago, but just recently when i've had a look they have dissapeared! Im thinking it must be something in my registry...

Yesterday I got a BSOD and as I rebooted I found that both my IDE devices are missing and can not be recognized by XP. While booting I found that both the IDE devices are properly listed but as soon as WinXP starts, both these drives are not recognized.:4-dontkno

I checked Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Log> System, I found that XP listed a error related with JMicron driver. After downloading and reinstalling JMicron driver (which I hope was right version), the DVD RW drive is now listed but my IDE drive is still missing which contains very important data and my Linux

As both the devices are properly listed during pre-OS boot, that I think means that the issue is related to OS, and it is not a driver issue. In BIOS I checked that JMicron controller is set to BASIC (there are 2 other modes, but I have no idea what do those two mean)!

Could someone please help me out to resolve this issue? Its really urgent for me to resolve.

Ok here's the deal. Im a systems administrator and this has just got me stumped. I have a laptop runing XP SP2. I took it home to copy some files from my desktop. When I logged in at home my desktop was intact but my favorites and documents were missing (not the folders just the files). At the office I dont have folder redirects turned on so thats not the issue. However I descided to copy files to my files from my desktop to my documents on my laptop anyway. ( Also Note I noted to free disk space before and after the copy) Copy went fine no issue even saved a couple of new favorites. (Note as well I log into the laptop with username and password from the office) When I got to the office plugged in and logged in I had all my favorites and documents back but none of the files I copied! However the harddrive still shows the space I filled when copying the files. I have done every search I can think of as well as manualing looking for the files. No luck

Has anyone seen this issue or no how to fix it so far im at a loss. I can copy the files again thats not an issue. I have just never seen an issue like this before. Thanks in advance :)
Also No viruses. Running latest defs and did a scan :)

Your programs did not vanish without a reason. When you restore to an earlier date, it would remove any programs that were installed after that date. That's why they appear to have vanished. You would need to re-install those programs.

You should be connected to the internet without an antivirus program. Nowadays, surfin the internet without an AV is begging for a bullet. <- look at this guy
Please download & install any (ONLY ONE) of the following antivirus programs.

Freeware Antivirus - AVG Anti-Virus

If you're seeking to purchase, I would recommend either of these:Kaspersky - Has a comprehensive scanner but a bit of a resource hog. Recomended only for fast computers.

Nod32 - light on resources & has fastest scanner engine. This is the one I have on my main machine
Both of the above have trial versions which you can try before purchase
