So i'm trying to upgrade from vista 32 bit to 7 32bit using an official CD. Doing a clean install isnt something I can do b/c I dont want to lose everything on my harddrive. When I do the upgrade I get the error "Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation." I've tried disabling everything but microsoft services at bootup before installing, but to no avail. The compatibility checker thing doesn't come up with any problems before installation. I've got over 20gigs of space still on my harddrive, so I don't think that's the problem. I've also run the chkdsk utility from the command prompt, but I don't think it found anything.

Any ideas to help?

A:Upgrading to 32bit Win7- could not boot to next phase

Take it from someone who has upgrade and installed many windows machines. I know that you don't want to loose your stuff but I would really really recommend that you do a clean install. If all possible, borrow a hard drive from a friend or if your living in the states with our great customer service at Best Buy, Walmart.. you can use the drive for the time being and return it.

I know this is not the answer you are looking for but it will prevent a lot of problems in the future. I have heard of a lot of lower bench markings from people upgrading instead of clean from vista to windows 7

Just recieved this on my newsfeedWindows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year - BBC newsIn my opinion this is fantastic news, as most of my devices are running windows 7/8.1 which should be eligable for a free upgrade.I have been toying around with windows 10 in a virtual machine and have found it's performance very good for a technical preview, have to wait and see what the finished product will be like.message edited by thomasad

A:Windows 10 upgrade to be 'free' for one year

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately the BBC news left out the fine print shown on Windows 10 page on Microsoft's site here. Quoted: ?It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer terms in coming months.?Also quoted is the need to sign up for email for the upgrade offer using your Microsoft account.i_Xp/Vista/W7Usermessage edited by XpUser

Does anyone know where you set these settings up at?

ISAKMP Phase 1
Pre-Shared Secret provided via phone
AES-128, aes-192 or (AES-256 Preferred)
Group 3
86,400 seconds (24 hours) timeouts
300 seconds (Confidence)
2 (Retry interval

IPSEC Phase 2
AES-128, AES-192, or AES-256, (AES-256 Preferred)
28800 seconds (8 hours)
Our network is very simple. It is just a setup where all computers connect to hubs and a hub connects to the modem.

I looked these two phases up and I don't see where you make the changes for this information. I can't find anything in Active Directory.

A:ISAKMP Phase 1 & IPSEC Phase 2

Point of clarification. I doubt you are running hubs. You're most likely running switches.

Who gave you those settings and what are you trying to accomplish? Those settings are to set up a IPSEC tunnel.

OK, someone at my wife's work was having pc problems and old HP would randomly and often hard-lock on her and wanted me to look at it. After checking a few things, ram, heatsink, power supply, I told her that without parts i was kind of dead in the water, so I started looking for parts. Ebay seemed to be the only prospect, old AMD slot A MB with pc100 ram, mostly everything was going to be used stuff and she didnt like that so had to look for something else. I ended up finding a socket A MB, Sempron2400+/333 and 512 pc2700 for approx $125. After messing with the HP case awhile we desided to deep six the case I had a spare mini-tower that she could have, fiited with a new 400watt ATX psu. I have an older Micron computer that I would like to upgrade.
Over the last year I've had to replace the H.D., the video card, CD burner, and 1 of the ram sticks. I would like to upgrade the rest of the out dated stuff. The CPU is the main thing I want to bring up to date and in doing so I would need to change the M.B. It currently is a 1Gig AMD Athlon. My question is: How much of the components that I currently have are reusable - can I just get a M.B. and put it in the original case and get a new CPU and Ram and reuse the H.D., Video Card ect.? What all is entailed in making this upgrade or am I better off starting with a new case and all? I just want to speed up desktop applications (photo apps)...very little serious gaming. I have a GForce4 MX 440 64 MB
video card, 60 gig H.D. and DVD and CD burner.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It's an 'about time' move - however, I'd happily pay for a version that was easier to manage. Windows 8.1 servicing is like trying to clear a minefield with a stick.
XP and 7 just ... work. Easy to manage, easy to trouble shoot. What was so difficult about this 8.x release? If 10 is just a re-dressed version of 8.1 I won't bother.
Waiting for the Tech specs to appear.

A:Free for a year? That's not the point.

What's wrong with Windows 8.1? I've been using Windows 8.1 since last summer, and upgraded directly from Windows 7. Reinstalled all my programs, did my own tweak, not even using a Start Menu Shell and I never had a single issue with it at all. If I'm looking for something under Windows 8.1, I can usually find it pretty quickly.

This is a ONE day promo, which will be available at V3 Software stores, between midday CET (central European time) Tuesday 31st of August and midday CET 1st of September 2010.

A:AVG AntiVirus 9, Free 1 year License

I must be too early since it shows AVG 9 onsale for the reduced price without any mention of the promotion as of yet. The AVG page there is seen at V3 Software Store - AVG Anti-Virus 9.0 [3 PC, 1 Year] - 62% off RRP

Don't confuse that with the other AVG link for the Internet Security 9 found above the av program on the main page.

Upon going to see if the giveaway was up the buy option wants you to fill up everything plus an additional S&H charge likely for the cd itself. The alarm bells rang however when clicking on the "try now" option as seen in the image here where the VIPRE Premium firewall kicked in. Something is wrong somewhere! since the firewall has been 100% accurate every time it has blocked any site!

One story that circulated a couple of days ago claimed that Microsoft would be giving pirates of their operating system a free upgrade to Windows 10. The news seemed a little strange at the time, considering Microsoft's previous stance on piracy, so...

A:Pirates upgrading to Windows 10 won't get a free valid license

I've never understood where exactly MS stands on piracy. When I was younger and poorer I would pirate windows and it always surprised me just HOW EASY it was to do. Not only that, but features like getting updates from MS themselves was trouble free and all you had to do was run an "activator" that literally took 2 seconds. I've pirated games with more aggressive DRM and those cost 1/3 the price. With assassins creed 2 that I had to set up a fake activation server on my computer so the game could run and I still couldn't receive updates. Hell, I didn't even pirate AS2, just EA's activation servers kept crashes so I had to crack it just to play a game I paid for.

On one hand people who pirate windows want to use windows software, so I can understand the soft stance MS might carry. At the same time if they were serious about piracy it should be easy to thwart their efforts by not allowing them easy access to updates.

I've been using a pre-built machine for nearly 3 years with Windows 7 and loving it. As far as hardware goes, it's rather weak for gaming or other graphically intense applications. It also only has 6GB of RAM.

Despite that, the Windows 10 notification for the free reservation thing states that my PC is ready.

However, I'm still skeptical about installing it when it's finally available. Will it make my computer's performance slower in any way? What if once I get it I run into a lot of issues and have to go back to 7? Is that even possible or will I be stuck with a useless machine? How buggy will it be?

I love 7, but I'd also like to finally upgrade to the latest Windows, not to mention that I'm a bit of an aesthetics kind of guy, so having the newest release has always sounded attractive.

Still, though, I gotta analyze the risks, here.

Any advice?

I am planning on trying Windows 10 again. I have a HP Pavilion HPE 270f i7 2.8 Ghz 12 GB Ram. I have tried the 10 upgrade several times first time I upgraded it installed and was slow. I tried using the go back to Windows 7 and that failed. So I had to reinstall Windows 7 clean. Next time I backed up everything to my external drive using acronis true image and tried again. I still had slow issue so I restored 7 with true image. I really want to give Windows 10 another chance. Question is I downloaded the free upgrade when it was free. Question is that version is before the Anniversary update. Do I have to install with the old version before the Anniversary update? Or is there a free version with the Anniversary already in the ISO? Meaning I want to upgrade using the newest version so I will not have to wait another hour or two to install the Anniversary update.

My computer is running 8.1

It has a 32GB SSD with a wee bit over 4GB free.

Will that cause problems upgrading to Windows 10?

A:Upgrading Windows 8.1 >> Windows 10 space

Yes it will as the upgrade installation leaves a Windows.old folder which in itself will be over 20GB. You'd need a bigger SSD really.

I already know about the trick where you update then revert, and the computer you updated on will be able to upgrade again for free after July 29th, but what if I won't have the computer I want to upgrade until after this date?

I'm getting a MacBook Air in August. I like how any programs made for Macs will work (for the most part) because each Mac has set specs, but I'm not a huge fan of the Mac OS. But then I learned about dual booting on Mac, and so I thought that if I dual booted Mac and Windows I'd get the best of both worlds. But then I learned that Windows 10 will only be free until July 29th, so is there a way I can 'reserve' the copy until then? Or will I just have to pay the $119 if I really want to do it?

A:Can I get Win10 for free after July 29th this year?

Someone else might think of a way but the answer is no. You can't get a free upgrade after 7/29.

Ok, so I'm on a mission to get this old eMachines good enough to play Far Cry, FEAR, and the likes (FPS's) decently (low/medium...)

The parts I'm reusing are:
MicroATX eMachines case (soon to be modded for a side fan);
.... pretty much it.

I also have a 500W [new] powersupply that is simply sitting here under my desk in its box since I'm not using it. So count the powersupply as FREE, since I'm gonna use this one (compared to the 5-year old 250W one).

Here are the current specs:
Foxconn SiS chipset mobo, socket A, AGP 8x
SiS integrated crap
AthlonXP [Socket A ] 2000+
512 generic ram

Now, I can do anything you say. Change it all, just add in some graphics card, whatever you say.

I do not have a "specific" budget. Let's just say that the lower we can get it the better. (So uhh... yeah... no E6300 + 7600GT + 1GB ram k? )

I'm open to suggestions =). I already have some ideas of my own, but I want to here what YOU would do in this case.

Thanks in advance =).

A:Extremely tight budget: Upgrading 5-year old eMachines to play newer games

Hi man,
I'd get an Athlon 64 3000+, then a Radeon X800 card, and a good, cheap 939 mobo, like THIS ONE. MicroATX, even SLI support (for future upgrades), and great EVGA brand.

As promised earlier this week, we have a real treat for everyone this weekend:

Everyone can get a 1 year license of Returnil Virtual System 2010 Home Lux for free! Before I delve into how to get the 1 year license, let me give a quick overview of what RVS 2010 is for those that don't know.

Returnil Virtual System 2010 is a unique security software that protects your computer in an unorthodox manner. RVS 2010 uses a powerful combination of anti-virus, anti-malware, and a virtual system to protect your computer from all types of viruses and unwanted system changes.

The traditional security software like Avira, Kaspersky, Norton, AVG, NOD32, etc. actively, and on demand, detect and remove infected files. RVS 2010, on the other hand, has a two pronged attack to the malware problem

I dont know how to start this but, a month ago, I ordered an OCZ VERTEX 30G SSD. I installed Windows7 on it and I'm Stunned at the overall Performance. but there is just One thing that annoys me. And it's this IDLE phase in boot-up before it picks up drivers/services from the SSD.

Let me explain, When MasterBootRecord is first read, there appears the text that says "STARTING WINDOWS".

Normally, Soon as you see that, the Pearls(droplets) appear and they start to fall onto the screen. but in MY Case, It stays IDLE at the point where it say "STARTING WINDOWS".

It will stay IDLE for like 4-5 seconds and THEN when the pearls appear, afterwards the boot is just INSTANT, Because thats when the SSD starts to read what it has to load.

So basically, its like an IDLE PHASE before the pearls appear. I installed WINXP and it had the same idle phase situation so i traced my boot with BOOTVIS, which I would like to share it's screenshot. You can notice the IDLE phase there, which is the same case with the windows7 I'm running currently.

I dont see the processor usage nor any HD usage, what could possibly be causing that?

I'll be grateful if you help me shave off these 4 seconds off my boot load.

EDIT: the Idle phase was the same even when i had windows installed on an HDD. So it's nothing relevant to the SSD. I also found this WinBootInfo known to trace boots in vista/7 but that doesn't count the idle phase at all. I traced it and it wo... Read more

A:Windows 7 Annoying IDLE BOOT Phase

I supppose you are talking about the BIOS phase. The length of that phase is determined on how many devices the BIOS has to check. Since I installed my SSD, I also noticed a prolonged BIOS phase. There seems to be a lot of checking going on. On the other hand, it may also only appear a lot longer in light of the instant boot cycle from the SSD.

I have windows 7 currently, legitimate version.
When microsoft had this free windows 10 I installed it once but downgraded back after a week. Now I wanted to go back so i downloaded the media creation tool and started installing. after the restart and the whole "Installing updates" etc. I would reach a blue screen that says:
Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file
(something about dve-64.sys)
status: 0xc0000428
and now i can't install windows 10, and i restart a few times and the computer goes back to windows 7 with the message: "Windows 10 installation failed during second_boot".

I tried: Disable driver signature enforcement. don't works.

Any help on how to download windows 10 when i can't pass

A:Error installing Windows 10 occuring during second boot phase

I assume your installation media is on a USB that your created from Windows Media Creation Tool. It appears that a file on your download is corrupted. Although the Media Creation Tool checks the download for validity, there may be a problem with the file. I would download the install files again on a different USB and retry the installation.

Title basically describes it. I was having trouble loging off a few days ago, so I just held down the power button to do a hard power down. Now when windows starts and I log on, I get to the point where explorer loads (task bar, start menu etc), a few apps load, and then everything just stops. The mouse still works but nothing else responds.

After a few times of trying, windows finally started telling me my c: drive needed to be checked, so I tried that, and it always hangs at 92%, step 4. I've tried logging on in safe mode and scheduling it to check/repair the disk, and I've also tried logging onto an XP installation on a different disk, and running chkdsk from there on it. It always hangs just toward the end of step 4.

I had this happen once a long time ago, and I believe chainging "native sata support" in the bios fixed it, but I don't understand that at all, because one day I had problems and enabling that fixed them, then another day I had a problem and disabling fixed it... I have no idea how that works. If I disable now though, I just get a BSOD when I try to log on, so i guess that's not it. Also tried to do a repair with xp disk, but my DVD drive has been flaky and is not recognizing that it can boot from the drive on start-up.....

I had no problems upgrading from AVG Free 8.5 to 9.0 on my desktop, but hadn't done so on this laptop because it's been very, very sick. We think it's now cured, but two attempts at running the upgrade installation on this machine failed.

The error message is:

Local machine: installation failed
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
Access is denied.

When we were "fixing" this machine, did we do something that is now preventing AVG from creating this new registry key for the update? What can I do to get the installation to finish?

I am running no other anti-virus or anti-spamware. I update and run a Malwarebytes Quick Scan daily, but that was not running when I tried to do the upgrade.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I've read every post I could find on this so I'm sorry to ask another dumb question but here goes.

I created an access database (volunteer work) which has an autoincrement field to issue numbers to animals taken in at our shelter. My 'boss' (also a volunteer) wants this simple autoincrement changed to a value which begins with the two digit year and then has 4 digits, starting with 0001 which will increment sequentially and restart at 0001 with the new calendar year. Therefore, records will start with 10-0001, 10-0002, etc for this year and 11-0001, 11-0002 for next year.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found a post on this exact topic from back in 2010. I am trying to incorporate the code into my database and am not able to get the code to work if I make any changes. Here is the link to the previous thread:

I have also uploaded the database that was provided in the last post. If I try to change the field and object names I appear to be unsuccessful in having the code still work even when I change the items in the code as well. I woud like some help. I would like for there to be a field called "RequestDate" that has the date stamp that is keyed in by the user. Then after that is keyed in on the form the "AssignmentID" field is updated to the new assignment number. The "RequestDate"="Admit_Date" and "AssignmentID"="ActualFWCNumber". I am trying to do this in Access 2010. If I make changes either the number field doesn't autopopulate or the same number keeps repeating. Any and all assistance on this would be great.

tamanthalou, welcome to the forum.
As you have posted the original database a copy of your database with no data in it would be better to understand your problem.

There's a nasty worm floating around that targets and defaces phpBB forums. It uses google to find phpBB forums then it deletes all the php and html pages and replaces them with some cyber-ghetto grafitti. It does not harm forum users, just the bulliten board itself. Well of course, I maintain a phpBB site. The flaw is in PHP and not the forum script. The cure is to upgrade to the most recent version of PHP which is 4.3.10 I've already got the tarball file, but my unix skills are rusty, and pretty weak in the first place.

Here's the question:

Since my site already had php 4.1.3 installed, do I have to get rid of this before installing the new version? If yes, then how?

I am kinda hopeing that I can just gunzip the file into the existing PHP directory, do a MAKE, reboot, and be done with it. My life could never be this simple.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Explain it as you would to a child. I really don't wanna blow up that site.

Thank You,

A:Upgrading PHP on a Free BSD machine

How you can update your PHP depends on how it was installed in the first place. Did it come from a binary package or the ports collection or did you just download a tarball and built it from there?

I know that dualbooting is (of course?) possible with, for example, W7 and W10. This is what pretty much all my google research has led me to, even though I was looking to find out something more specific:

What I don't know is: Can this free upgrade essentially turn one OS into two?

I wouldn't mind having Windows 10, but due to compatibility problems with software I need for work, I *cannot* lose my W7 for now.
Also, I just plain like W7, so if I have to choose between 7 and 10, then 7 it shall remain.

But again, and maybe to rephrase the question: how would I get from one W7 (single boot system) to one W7 AND one W10 (dual boot system)?
Would I first have to buy a second W7 licence, turn my existing system into dualboot with 2x W7, then upgrade one of them? That would be a pain.

A:Upgrading W7 to W10 (free), any way to end up with dualboot?

Not unless you get another licence for Windows 7.

The original licence is the basis for the upgrade, hence no longer valid once you upgrade.

I have an installation folder on my main machine(Windows 7) with all my software. I have repeatedly run into issues connecting odd devices to my shared folder. This time I have installed Windows 10 Technical Preview (on a different machine) and don't understand why it tells me I can't access my own machine. After all these years, you would think user friendly would be a reality. It seems to be a coin toss as to which machines will connect. I hate never knowing I can access my own machine without issue. Here I am trying to install applications but yet I can't get to my storage location.

What is the secret to sharing your machine, so that anyone on the same network can access shared folders?

Edit: I always turn on "Network Discovery" and "File and Print Sharing".

A:Network connection issues (year after year)

I'm more brutal via the firewall:

set trust localhost and your lan ip's, eg

then add two rules for only the PRIVATE PROFILE

inbound allow tcp/udp from to any for ports 137-139,445
outbound allow tcp/udp from any to for ports 137-139,445
I use a much more complicate scheme in reality to enforce known vs unknown devices and to segregate WiFI from wired access, but that's just me.

In services, ensure these are running

Bonjour Service ( mDNSResponder)
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness

With Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 finalized and available to developers, Microsoft is offering a free resource designed to streamline the upgrading process for those using older versions of Visual Studio. ?Moving to Visual Studio 2010 e-Book? is offered for free via the Microsoft Download Center, and the official label is rather self-explanatory. The resource will help developers running VS2003, VS2005 or VS2010 make the jump to the latest iteration of Visual Studio. Finalized a month ago, Visual Studio 2010 represents the apex of Microsoft development tools, and is tailored to products such as Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

?The book is not a language primer, a language reference, or a single technology book. It's a book that will help professional developers move from previous versions of Visual Studio (starting with 2003 and on up). It will cover the features of Visual Studio 2010 through an application. It will go through a lot of the exciting new language features and new versions of the most popular technologies without putting the emphasis on the technologies themselves. It will instead put the emphasis on how you would get to those new tools and features from Visual Studio 2010,? an excerpt from the download?s description reads.

After that I would do a scan disk and the last 4 weeks has been ok, it completed to phase 3.

Now for some reason it doesn't complete phase 2.

Anyway ideas?

Hmmmm? I just cleared the cache, cookies, etc on firefox which is the default browser I use. Clicked scan disk and it completed pass phase 3.

What the is the relationship between clearing cache, cookies etc that makes scan disk work?. Because it seems I have to clear all those date before scan disk can be completed. Why?

I would have thought clearing cookies, history temporary files via control panel > Internet options > general clears all the data but it seems I have to clear it through firefox too? Why?

Another thing. As I managed to complete scan disk. I decided to re check it just incase, at this point I was surfing the net reading some emails, etc and scan disk did not complete.

I am in charge of 2 Compaq CQ2815EA from PCWorld (*spits*) for my companies social club.

They came installed with Windows 7 Home Premium, and being a social club they were reluctant to pay to upgrade to Pro (I may have some swing with that this time). As such, and due to the environment the machines are being used in, I used some registry hacks to prevent users messing with the system where possible. (Unfortunately I cannot remember exactly what tweaks I employed).

Now it's come for the Windows 10 upgrade.

I have used the Media Creation Tool, both directly on the machine in question and to create installation media (USB).

The install starts off OK (under the administrative logon).

Then we get the first reboot, I get the black screen with the grey progress bar "Loading Files" and then nothing.

The monitors built in error message reports "Out of Range" (It would normally report "Cable Not Connected" when there is no signal).

It goes like this for ages, and as I can't leave the machine unattended I reset the machine, I got the same error and then eventually the windows 7 login.

Logging in gives me an error message as to why Windows could not install.

So far I have received 2 different messages

Hope someone can help with this as I'm not too familiar with any of it!

I'm trying to connect through a VPN SecuRemote and I am being verified but it is failing at phase 2 (quick mode). I have allowed the following:

TCP Port 264 (Outbound)
TCP & UDP Port 500 (bi-directional)
UDP Port 2746 (bi-directional)

I think it is behind a NAT, but have been told that if it is not to allow ESP (or protocol 50) also bi-directional, so I have done this also in case it is not. I have allowed these settings on the BT voyager router and opened the necessary ports on the Norton personal Firewall, although don't think it is anything to do with the firewall as even when this is turned off it still will not connect.

I have changed the MTU value to 1428, which was the value in the literature however it seems to return to 1500 whenever i try to change it.

I can connect to the VPN when I do not select the option to enhance connectivity, IKE over TCP, but I have been told that to use the other program I will need to have this selection checked.

Anyone any ideas??
Don't really know too much anout this so explanations in quite simple terms would be greatly appreciated!!

Update your bios. After, disable all unused ports like parallel, serial, floppy etc...

Install the driver using device manager if needed.

I am a user of windows 8.1. I have already reserved windows 10. We all know that windows 10 is going to release soon. What I have heared is that win 10 is free for 1 year. So I am little bit confused that if I ugrade to win 10 now so after 1 year of use I have to pay for it or not?

A:Do I have to pay for windows 10 after one year of use?

No. It doesn't mean it's free only for 1 year. It means that you have 1 year to claim your free copy. You can do the upgrade now or later but if you do it after 29 July 2016 you'll have to buy it so take your time and decide if you want it now. It's not the bad idea to wait 2-3 months while they fix some bugs etc.

I wonder if Win7 SP1 next year will be the last retailed edition for sale in the market or not. I remember the final boxed version of XP is SP2 and the OEM version is SP3. However Vista Boxed and OEM disc only got SP1 and customers must download SP2 from the Internet themselves !!

I ask this question is because I like to collect and keep the lastest boxed version and oem version of a Windows. So now, I have Vista SP1 OEM and Vista SP1 Boxed Edition. XP SP2 Boxed EDition and XP SP3 OEM edition.

I didn't buy Vista SP1 until I confirmed that there won't be Vista SP2 for sale in the market.

HI installed Windows 7 RC in May and ever since then sometimes when I load Windows 7 it will freeze during the part when the Windows logo is moving and just hang there. So I restart by pushing the power button. Then I am prompted with Windows Recovery, I use it and it doesn't find any errors or says cannot be repaired if you have attached any new hardware to the computer please remove it or something like that. Just wanna know how to resolve this. Perhaps, it's only my computer. To clarify, it always does this during the windows logo boot. It doesn't happen all the time but enough to bother me and for there to be something wrong.

I would like to predict and calculate the moon cycle from 1601

The first New Moon of that year was Jan 4 12:24 GMT according to

The moon has a cycle of 29.53059 days (as of the year 2000.)

The New moon would be day one and Full moon about day 14

For instance someone could be born on day 5 of the cycle of the moon - the
answer would only have to be whole numbers.

I currently use a DatePicker which I use to input date of birth

Any idea how I could get this going from the year 1601 ?

A:Moon Phase Calculations in VB

You might use the Numerical Recipes stuff
The book is available in pdf online in C and Fortran/Pascal -- but if you like the ideas then there are these basic routines (older)

(see flmoon.bas there - but note that you will need the julian date stuff such as caldat and julday as well and badluk.bas has some fri 13th occurring on a full moon calcs)

For background on Phase I, see here:
In short, I had Norton Internet Security, and started getting pop-ups from it saying that it had blocked something called Zeroaccess Trojan, (and another one, I can't remember). I clicked on it to try to get more info, wondering why it wasn't sending them to the quarintine area, but couldn't get any info. Shortly after, another popup from Norton, this time a prog called Powererase. Basically telling me it can get rid of the trojans, but first I had to restart. I clicked ok, computer locked up on restart and went into a start loop. Eventually it came back, but my internet access was out. It said I was connected, but I couldn't connect to anything. NIS wouldn't start, and Norton tech support told me to uninstall NIS, but I couldn't do that either. Come here, got advice and links, and managed to get NIS uninstalled, and internet access gained again. Now, I need to figure out if I still have these things on my computer, and how to get rid of them. Any help?
PS, I have not reinstalled NIS yet... I am deciding whether to do that, or go with another brand.

Am planning a new build and the Asus P8Z77-V board is cheaper by $40 than the Asus P8Z77-V Pro but has 8 phase power as opposed to the Pro with 12 phase power.

Now I have done a quick Google and there are refs to this but could someone put it in plain / basic wording as there are some refs to CPU power supply, vdroop, and other tech stuff that I don't really understand??

I intend running an i5 3570K and have try at over clocking - if that has any relevance for what my query is about.

A:What does phase powering mean on mobo

The voltage from the power supply has to be reduced to the smaller voltage required by the chip, and delivered at high current. Switching Voltage Regulator Modules are used to do this stepping down of the voltage very efficiently with little power lost to heat. The power the VRM supplies has to have very little ripple and must respond quickly to changes in load. Using multiple VRM modules (phases) increase the response and reduces ripple. The more the better.

8 phases should be plenty except for extreme overclocking.

Hi all,I came across this and thought it may be usefull to a few people here on the forums, although if you use 16 bit applications you may want to keep this disabled:This security hole is said to affect 32bit Windows operating systemsA CRITICAL FLAW has been found in the Windows NT trap handler that makes all Windows machines wide open to hackers. The problem has been a feature of every Windows system for the last 17 years and no one has noticed. According to Full Disclosure, the security hole in Windows allows users with restricted access to escalate their privileges to system level. It can be done on all 32-bit versions of Windows from Windows NT 3.1 to Windows 7. This is not likely to bother consumers much, but corporate IT managers will be wetting themselves. And the removal instructions. Enabling the "Prevent access to 16-bit applications"1. Start2. Run (Windows key + R)3. Type gpedit.msc and press enter (Run as Administrator if need be) 4. Expand - Computer Configuration5. Expand - Administrative Templates6. Expand - Windows Components 7. Open - Application Compatibility section.8. Double Click 'Prevent access to 16 bit applications'9. Check Enabled10 Click Apply then OkHere is a screenshot to help those having any troubles:

A:17 year old Windows flaw discovered in Windows 7. How to close this security vulnerability

According to the same site microsoft had promised to patch the hole in security I am afraid I am one of those people who just has automatic updates on and hardly checks to see what I am actually downloading. I guess if some person who shouldnt have admin access especially in a company or business was to get it this way microsoft would have to do a lot of explaining. Its amazing that only after 17 years this hole has been found.

Windows XP the third-most popular OS after 15 years
It seems crazy to think that there are people out there using a 15-year-old operating system, but it’s happening. In fact, so many people are still running Windows XP right now that it is currently the third-most popular OS in use.
Microsoft actually stopped supporting Windows XP two years ago, which means the platform no longer sees updates of any kind — not even critical security patches. What’s more, even third-party developers like Google have stopped supporting it.
Despite all this, Windows XP’s 10.9 percent share of the market means it has a larger install base than Apple’s latest OS X El Capitan software (4.05 percent), and Windows 8.1 (9.56 percent). Windows 10 just about beats it with 14.15 percent...
Windows 7 still reigns king, with a whopping 51.89 percent share of the user base.
Remark:   This is NOT surprising.   Windows XP was a very "solid" OS... especially in comparison to its predecessor (Win ME) and successor (Vista).   It worked very well, and people liked it.   And let's face it:  people don't throw away "appliances" [be it a computer, microwave, refrigerator, and especially a car] just because its warrantee period has expired.
So okay, a computer is not a car. &nbs... Read more

A:15 year-old Windows XP the 3rd-most popular OS

Yep...totally agree. A much more intuitive interface and a much simpler format and layout. You could find where to go and how to get stuff done without having to conduct a self directed search wondering where everything was changed to or hidden. Vista wasn't so bad and has worked well on my old XPS-420 but Windows 7 started the veer toward the dark side. If this machine fails I am going shopping for a rehabbed Dell with Winndows 7. Have no need or desire to have a screen full of tiles that I have to swipe.
I did some temp work a few years ago for a major health insurance company as they were ramping up for ACA. The OS they were upgrading from was DOS! That was an interesting experience, to say the least. Had so many programs open we had to use two monitors.

So I bought a used PC which had Windows 7 Ultimate about a year ago. It's a somewhat old desktop PC, 4GB RAM, average stuff, nothing extraordinary but not a dinosaur either. A couple days ago a message started popping up saying I needed to validate my Windows; quite odd since I'd been using the computer for a year already. Anyways, I downloaded the program suggested by the message, and it said Microsoft couldn't complete the validation process. I should also mention that I want to upgrade to Windows 10 but don't have any of the required updates, which also don't appear on W. Update.
I downloaded the MGADiag thing, if it's any use. If my Windows turns out to be invalid, what can I do? Will I still be able to download Win 10?

The activation was circumvented by installation of an Activation Exploit - which Windows eventually discovered after installation of KB971033.

Hi I am sure I am not alone, but I honestly have my machine on literally 20 hours a day non stop working away. Its my work horse especially since I work online running a business.

Anyways - I am noticing a few things going a bit wrong like chkdsk.exe not working and a few other issues.

WOuld you suggest that it is a good thing to re-install a clean version of windows 7 from a previous image you made or is that a waste of time?

I mean, if my image backup has missing and corrupt registry items then I guess whats the point?

Thoughts please!

PS I wouldn't be able to re-build the system I have since there are way too many tweaks and setings to re-do, but I think that I have some issues.....

Maybe I should re-install the registry?

A:Should you re-install Windows every year?

I do mine every 6 months. Just to make sure it's clean.

With your drivers, files, and program installers organised. It's a 2 hour investment every 6 months. And Having a clean image with no updates or programs installed helps.

Why not?

I have windows XP media edition on a Gateway 510XL 3.2 mhz machine. My AVG was expiring so I decided to try another program. I got McAfee security suite and installed it on my system. I had problems on the install (conflict with ad-aware plus) and tried to reinstall. Before reinstall I picked up a bug that automatically resets my home page to every time I reboot.

I installed McAfee and my system ran very slow and the date was reset to 1970 and cannot be changed. I removed McAfee and now the date is fixed at 1990. Is this progress?

Checked the BIOs and it had the same year.

Rechecked the BIOs date was 4/09/1990

Replaced battery, no change BIOs date is 4/10/1990
reset the BIOS date to 4/09/2007
saved and started reboot
reentered BIOS F2 on the bootup date was 4/09/2007
at XP Welcome screen selected "administrator"
date error message appeared
The Windows start up sound (tones) stops half way through
Check Processes running
there is a Nortons.exe that has to be deleted before the boot will complete fully
there are also some unknown processes running that would give me alerts when I had the McAfee security system installed that they were trying to access the internet.
there are two others but they disappear quickly
These are listed as "administrator" files

Time appears to be correct at 22:51
replaced battery no change
rebooted - changed bios date remained 4-10-1990

A:Windows year will not reset

Sounds like you should try a new battery. If that solves the date/time problem, then run an HJT scan and put it in the Security forum for analysis.

I have a bad case of Vundo, almost to the point that I am going to reload my XP Pro. I have tried just about everything to get this Combofix to run. Yes, it did do the software update. Further, I tried ESET and that would not run either. It repeatedly gives error 2002 which I see is quite common via Google but I didn't find a cure for it.

I am getting a little ahead of myself, when I found there was Vundo screwing up my computer, I purchased a copy of Malwarebytes. That did not clear my problem so a technician was assigned to help. Yes, I really am pleased with Malwarebytes offering help beyond that which is normally required. He has suggested several things but between the two of us, Combo still does not run. We have done a Panda scan but Combofix may offer better data.

Prior to each run I make sure that I clean as much as possible by scanning with Mbam which I had to rename in order to run. If I get this to run, he gets the data. I am not skilled to read the output but I should be able to get Combo to run. Heck, at this point it is not going to take much for me to just purge XP and start over.
