Windows Time mechanism clarification.

Q: Windows Time mechanism clarification.

Hi Team,
May I know how does windows time works?
During system boot up, after BIOS transfers the ownership to windows, does windows get the time value from CMOS RTC?
After that, how does windows time tick-tock? using PCH's HPET(High Precision Event Timer) or CPU's TSC(Time Stamp Counter)?
Does any interrupt or events will cause windows time pause? such as SMI?
Any documents from windows to explain this mechanism.
If I have to debug an issue relative with windows time, any way to monitor this time during system boot up?
it is a data structure or run time register reading or something else?
Thanks,
-Tarzan

Hello,

My uncle has setupped a small business factory, and he has bought 3 computers. Now i suggested him that he should purchase Windows 7 Home Basic as they just need them for accounting purposes etc.

But from the vendor from whom I was gonna purchase Windows has now confused me by saying that in businesses you cannot use Home Basic version of Windows and its only for Home use.

Is that statement correct ? Do i have to buy Windows 7 Professional for the facroty pc's ?

Thanks.

A:Windows 7 License clarification

The vendor is BSing and trying to make you buy a higher priced edition. There is no condition that home basic cannot be used in a factory. Go ahead and buy as long as you are sure it does whatever you need in the factory setup.

Hi

First off, apologies if this is already posted someplace.

I'm relatively Windows-literate, but admit to being confused on how to deal with drivers. I will be doing a clean install of Windows 7 on my laptop (Dell D631, 4Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD, currently Win XP Pro) and want to be in good shape re drivers required. I'm confused as to where to go to have the right drivers available before I start the install... what comes with Windows 7, what do I need to go to manuf websites for, what do I go to microsoft.com for, what about the Catch-22 of... "don't have the right (eg) network driver, and can't get onto the web due to this, to GET the right network driver..." etc etc.

Apology #2 - this might be a real basic question. Thanks in advance for help. Nice forum!

Good question

Win 7 should pick up most if not all of your drivers when you install. It did on my dell. If you're installing 32 bit it will be pretty straight foward, 64 bit dell is not keen on so their driver support is lacking

Hi,
A couple of friends of mine were chatting about xp. One owns it, the other has Windows 98SE and wants to use the owned copy to upgrade.
Don't you have to register the software online?
If so, would he be able to use it?
Would it affect the xp owners setup at all?

I don't know anything about xp, so I couldn't comment on the "situation"

Thanks

A:Clarification needed re: Windows xp...

You can buy an upgrade Windows XP CD for the Windows 98SE computer, but you can't use someone else's copy to upgrade another computer legally. One license for one machine. You will have to activate Windows XP after you upgrade. You have an activation grace period of 30 days.

Hi all,

I am currently studying for the 70-680 exam that I am taking in December. I was watching an online video around dual booting and VHDs.

Something the instructor said has confused me somewhat.

He was showing how to create a bootable Windows USB installation disk and basically said just partition the drive, make it active and copy the Windows installation folders/files from a DVD to the USB drive.

I was sure doing a simple file copy would not work, what about creating the boot sector on the drive ?

Anyway I followed the steps, made the partition active, copied the files and set BIOS to boot from the USB.

It worked.

So why are there posts out there where people are saying a boot sector must be created using BOOTSEC.EXE ?

So on a partition, all that is needed is to make it active and place BOOTMGR in root and then the BOOT folder with BCD store and the basic OS would be loaded ?

Hope I have made myself clear !

Thanks, Gary

Can't help you on your question - not expert enough. However, I have read many times that Windows is not reliable for booting from an external USb drive. Perhaps you were lucky. I will try again and see if luck is with me as well.

Hello all, this is my first post on sevenforums. Though I've referred to sevenforums many a times, never registered because I always found similar questions posted by others.

Anyways, I'm preparing to dual boot my Windows 7 machine(already installed) with Windows Server 2008. I've discovered that booting from VHD is a great option and I found all the commands for it online. But before I do it, just want to make I'm doing it the right way.

Two of the commands for creating a VHD is:

Code:
CREATE VDISK FILE=c:\windows7rc.vhd MAXIMUM=200000 TYPE=EXPANDABLE
SELECT VDISK FILE=c:\windows7rc.vhd
I am not sure what does "c:\" in the command indicate.

I've attached a screen shot of my existing partitions. I have a partition of 97.66 GB which is unallocated on which I'd like to install Server 2008.

My question is do I need to change anything in the above command?

Thanks in advance.

Recently, using FF 2.0.0.16 on my Vista Ultimate 32 bit computer, I notices popup ads from c5.zedo.com, when I visited a web page. The pop ups appeared if I left OR right clicked on a text area. The mouse pointer remained a pointer; had not changed to hand with extended index finger.

I verified that FF's popup blocker is / was on. I removed all exceptions & restarted the PC. Same problem. I viewed the page source, searched for zedo and found it related to java script.

I turned off Java, rebooted & the problem went away.

This did NOT occur using IE 7.

I stopped the popups by using the modified hosts file from mvps.org. Because the .bat procedure used by the mvps author to replace the hosts file failed in the past, I copied the contents of the modified hosts from mvps.org & pasted the contents into my hosts file, rebooted & success occurred. I had re-enabled java in FF.

I hope this information is useful to anyone else who encounters the phenomenon.

Firefox's popup blocker does not block all popups, although it does its best. The best way to block ads and the rest of the popups would be to use the Firefox AdBlock Plus extension.

Also, Java is not the same thing as Javascript. They are completely different, and I'm assuming you disabled JavaScript, not Java. However, you don't want to completely disable JavaScript because almost every modern website uses it in some way or another. AdBlock Plus should block the ads, but you can also use NoScript to block all JavaScript on a per-site basis.

I have a HP Deskjet 3745 I've had for a year and it keeps getting locked up on the left side and says mechanism error cradle can't move. I can print a test page but when it gets to the bottom of the page thats when it gets locked up. I try to align it but Its printing sideways like the cradle is out of alignment but its screwed in tight plus the lines are overlapping each other like theres a problem with the ink. The ink has 75% left. I sold it and took it over there one day after work so it sat in my car so I think maybe the heat inside the car may have did something. The lady I sold it to just moved and I think they may have dropped it cause theres a black scuff mark on the corner but she said she didn't. I had to give her money back so now I'm left with a broken printer.

I have tried to trouble shoot settings. Everything appears to be correct per my internet provider. My operating system is Vista; I have been using Windows Mail for several years with no problem. Nothing has changed with my computer re: recent updates or new programs.

What is an "authentication mechanism" and how do I set/respond to the error issue? Any available help would be greatly appreciated! (FYI I'm not a computer techie-type so simple-minded (referring to me of course!!!) direction would be especially appreciated! Thank you!!!

Hi Gang,

When I try to search my computer, any part of my computer, the search module seems to stall. That is, it doesn't appear to be doing anything for anywhere between 10-30 seconds. After this time the meter starts working and the word "searching" comes up on the search box.

There seems to be a long delay between the time I give the order to search, and the time the search command is actually executed.

What can I do to eliminate this delay?

I have WinXP Pro SP2

Good morning.

I'm a third year university student and for one of my assignments, I am to write a research report based on the question 'Are Passwords an Effective Security Mechanism'. I have focused the research on biometric and traditional (alphanumeric combination) passwords. Also, I am required to obtain some primary research which can be argued against my secondary research to form some sort of conclusion, and to do this, I have decided that a questionnaire is the perfect solution.

I would appreciate it if some of you would take the opportunity to complete my questionnaire as you will be helping me out a lot. It will take no more than 2 minutes to complete. Also, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions on biometric and traditional passwords, regarding their security.

The survey can be found here - https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/VMS7XPD

I apologise if this is in the wrong section or breaks a rule. I have checked the rules out and I believe it doesn't break the advertising rule, but it might to you guys.

Thanks in advance.

A:Are Passwords an Effective Security Mechanism

The user is the first and last line of defense. Strong passwords can be effective security measure. Unfortunately, it has been proven time and again that the user is a more substantial factor (weakest link) in security than the architecture of the operating system or installed protection software. Security is all about layers, and not depending on any one technology or approach to detect or save you from the latest threats. The most important layer in that security defense? You! Most threats succeed because they take advantage of human weaknesses (laziness, apathy, ignorance, etc.), and less because of their sophistication.Krebs on SecurityThese were the worst passwords of 2015, and they're only getting worseThis List Of 2014s Worst Passwords, Including 123456, Is EmbarrassingIts 2014 And Our Passwords Arent Getting BetterThe 25 Worst Passwords of 2013

Recently, the eject button on my dvd drive stopped working. I took off the faceplate and noticed the pin that would push the eject button on the drive was bent, and pushing the button on the drive still caused the drive to eject. So I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the faceplate only.

Does anyone know where I could find a new one? I have a HP dv6000 series (dv6568se)

Hello,    Does anybody know what is the part number/s for the latching mechanism, whole mechanism/slider etc., that holds the lid/screen closed?    I found some other posts where they were talking about the lid/screen hooks. I'm talking about the mechanism that the hooks get retained in.   I've started to put together a T420s that someone else took it apart and when I finished I realized that I was missing the latching mechanism and I've looked online and I couldn't find anything, not even the proper name/definition for that part/s.  Thank you,Emil

hey,
i just bought a new computer, and assembled it.
everything works great, except that whenever i unplug the computer and then plug it back, i cant turn it back on again for a while.
No lights, no response, like its not in the socket at all. only after a few minutes of being unplugged it lets me turn it on again.
It was very anooying when i assembled the system, and had to wait for a while between adding stuff.
It really pissed me off when i had a power failure in my house for a second, and couldn't use my computer for about 20 minutes later.
Is this a safety thing from enermax? if it is, is there a way i can get around it? or atleast minimize the wait time?

Motherboard: Asus P5B

I may be off on those wattages, I can't be arsed to check for sure right now. But I'm not off by more than 15, and its not even relavent to your case.

Is there any built in mechanism in Windows 7 during the fresh installation that all files are copied successfully from DVD to hard drive? or as long as Windows 7 completes the installation no matter how fast/slow it takes, one can assumed that all files are copied successfully?

Mine took about 25 mins, but during the installation lots of long pauses while reading/copying files from my 4X DVR+RW to hard drive as if Windows couldn't find files or constantly waiting from the rewritable 4X DVR+RW), but it eventually competed the installation in 25 mins none the less without giving out any error messages.

My email client, desktop program PostBox (for Win) has been slowed since I installed BD TS2016 (I'm quite sure this is the reason as it was very fast before, and slowed immediately after...)

I also run WebRoot AV (which does not scan email as per their documentation) and HitmanAlertPro (which could also be affecting my email client, but I uninstalled it to test this somewhat small chance given its just an anti-exploit, and it doesn't seem to have affected it, the client is still slow).

1. I would LIKE BD to scan my email as of course having AV w/o scanning email could in many ways be pointless given email can be a deadly vector for heavy malware.

2. But I don't want my client to be slow. It's not horrible, and I suppose I could tolerate it (basically deleting messages, loading new messages, and the program responsiveness overall, is a bit sluggish compared with its normal instantaneous response)

3. Is there a way to configure email scanning differently? Or should the program NOT be slowing my client noticeably in general, and is this behavior indicative of something being wrong?

I'm sure BD users will be able to comment on whether it slows their email or not given they use a desktop client like Outlook, Postbox, Thunderbird, etc.

Thanks!

A:BitDefender Email Scanning Mechanism? Performance Issues w/ email Client

I need some clarification on SLI vs Crossfire. What they are and what they do and the advantage of doing so? Next, what is a dedicated Physics card? How can I use a dedicated physics card? Can I have either a SLI or Crossfire setup in conjunction with a dedicated Physics card? Now in mu current computer setup can I add a dedicated physics card and would it be worth do so. I tried doing some Googleing but I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

A:need some clarification

SLI and crossfire are the interfaces for nVidia and ATI respectively. They allow you to link two or more Graphics cards as if they are one card. they share the Ram and processing load. The motherboard, PSU and cards have to support the interface for it to work.

The dedicated physics card is when someone uses a nvidia card that has PhysX just for the physics processor. Usually, a card handles all the games commands and code in one processor. The nVidia cards that have a PhysX core, instead seperate the code that is used for PhysX to one processor designed to handle the math of the Physics environment. You can have two cards and one of them is used just because it supports PhysX.

Win7 64 bit (initially upgraded from Vista, subsequently upgraded to 64 bit)

There are 2 Program Files directories under root C. One with an (x86) suffix and the other with no suffix.

1. Am I correct that the x86 extension implies that all programs listed under are 32 bit whereas absent the suffix all applications listed are 64 bit?

2. Assuming correct, whey wouldn't one (sensibly) be listed as (32) and the other (64)?

The above is in regard to IE explorer which I seldom use but when I do, as now and there is no icon shortcut floating around and need to create one and place it, I must choose the correct one (32 bit since 64 bit is not supported by Norton). To eliminate later confusion, can I rename the Program Files to Program Files_64 Bit?

You of course will need to pick up the instructions from that point....follow them; and then, why not post a newer log in your other thread...they will stop by and give you a thumbs up or down!

I have always found this to be unclear when it comes to installing patches for games, virtually all the time the websites say "Exit all antivirus/firewall software before installing patches"

Ok clear enough for some, but they had'nt bargained for me lol

What I need clearing up is this: I have always when having read that simply right click the Avast (virus program) icon and chose exit etc....but is this enough? or do I have to go into services and disable it completely? inc the firewall?

Jekyll and Hyde

A:Need clarification

Hi Chris,

There should be no need whatsoever to disable your computer security whilst installing game patches - after all, you didn't need to disable it whilst installing the original game. This is especially important if the only way of updating the game is online.

If, however, you can download and save the patch prior to installing it then yes, you can disable security (make sure that you physically disconnect your machine from the network/internet before you do so). You can then install the patch from the saved file. Remember to reenable security before going back online.

However, I don't recommend disabling your security, even when installing a patch from a saved file. To put things in perspective, I don't need to disable the security on my system when I am updating system drivers, such as audio and graphic drivers, so I don't see why it should be necessary for some games (unless there is some ulterior motive).

Good day! This will be a quick and easy question but I have no idea where to ask it so here goes.

I will be replacing my UPS (Intex 800V) soon and as I was searching for a new one and check its specs, it says 700W. I also checked the higher capacity model of Intex and they have the 1500V and even though it is double the capacity of my current UPS, it is still cheaper to the 700W model I found in a hardware store.

My question is, should I be looking for a UPS based on V (I assume it's Volts) or W (again, Watts)?

A:UPS Clarification

I think you will find the UPS is rated as 1500VA which stands for volts x amps. This is not quite the same as Watts and in the spec you will see that it is rated as 600W. For an explanation of the difference between VA and Watts for UPS see http://www.power-solutions.com/watts-va.

As long as the items you are protecting with the UPS do not exceed 600W you will be fine with the 1500VA UPS.

Which component of a "Dell System" constitutes it still being Dell. I replaced my dell mobo with a modified Gigabyte, modified to fit my "DELL" case. I asked for help on this forum and was told my installation was counterfeit becasue i used the gigabyte mobo on an installation of a "Dell Oem Win " all other components are the originals from DELL. So please moderator explain why you removed my help request or clarify.

A:Clarification

As soon as you change the motherboard, it`s a Gigabyte board in a dell case. Technically not a dell anymore. Better then a Dell.

You can`t use a dell oem key on a gigabyte mb, it`s not legal.

You need to install a retail copy of windows.

The only thing original about a dell is the motherboard, and they are garbage.

I've installed Windows 10 almost 20 times, but always as an upgrade over an existing OS. I'm finally going to install it on a few systems I've just completed building. I understand that if I am using UEFI, the drives must be formatted as GPT partitions.

I'm not finding any clear answers, so I am asking here, once and for all. Is there a benefit to running UEFI/GPT versus the traditional BIOS/MBR?

I never have more than 4 partitions on a drive, and don't plan on having a bootable disk larger than 1 TB on any system. Is performance the same?

I've had to troubleshoot a non-booting Windows 7 system that ran UEFI/GPT and it was a royal pain to get any repair functions working.

A:Clarification - MBR vs GPT

Here's some explanation between the two's:

Solved Does a Windows 10, clean install, create the necessary partitions? - Windows 10 Forums

In your case. You can stick with MBR for compatibility using tool such as Easy BCD and easier to setup dual booting, specially with LINUX on the same HD/SSD.

I see that Windows 10 Pro includes Hyper-V. If enabled, would this work on a client system much the same way as VMWare Player, VirtualBox, etc?

I'm very familiar with both of those hypervisors, but have never used the Microsoft offering, and I'm just looking for confirmation.

Thanks!

A:Clarification on Hyper-V

As so often in computing and everything else, this is of course only a subjective, personal opinion: for me the Hyper-V is the the best available free hypervisor. It's my choice, I completely stopped using VirtualBox and VMware products when a free consumer version of Hyper-V was presented in first Windows 8 beta versions. Since that I have only used Hyper-V for all my virtualization needs.

One think Hyper-V is missing is direct support of the host USB devices. At least for me this is not a big deal because I can use my Hyper-V virtual machines in enhanced mode (Windows 8 or later, CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux guests), or with remote desktop connection (Windows 7 or older, other Linux guests).

On the other side Hyper-V has a lot of features missing from the other free alternatives. One feature I like really much is it automatically suspends all running virtual machines when the host is hibernated or shut down, and resumes them without any data loss or other issues when the host wakes up or is restarted. Checkpoints is another feature I find extremely useful.

I recommend Hyper-V wholeheartedly but naturally it's of course up to you to decide if you want to test it. GEt started with this tutorial: Hyper-V virtualization - Setup and Use in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums.

Hi,
This is just to confirm myself about the arguement thats passed in the Main method. I have earlier got replies from this forum that the arguement need not be args[] always...it can also be like this: main (String argv[]) or main (String xyz[])..etc.But one of my colleague informed me that though we can give any value like xyz[], avs[], argv[] etc, it is not advisable because if teh program is long, we might get runtime errors. So he advised me to stick with the (String args[]) convention only.Could anyone clarify this?
Thanks & Regards,
Cali.

A:java clarification

Hi Caliraj,

Here are the Java conventions (probably a legacy from C language) :

- the main class of an application (batch or GUI) must contain a main method;
- the main method of a main class must also have an array of String in order to treat passed arguments; that array is mandatory even if no argument is passed otherwise the main method will be undetected by the runtime.

Also, you can give whatever name you want to the array of String as it is locally used by the main method, it won't conflict with the rest of the application whatever the length of the coding.

I have win 7 32 bit installed on my home pc on a 500 gb hard drive, but I am now going to fit a 1 tb hard drive and use a Acronis true clone to clone my current o/s to the new disk. Once cloned and checked to be working I want to upgrade my cloned o/s on the new disc to win 7 64 bit.

Now I have both 32 and 64 bit upgrade discs and I will only be using it on ONE pc so I am legal.

Can I just boot the pc with the win 7 64 bit cd in the cd drive and select CUSTOM install, will this find my existing registered copy of windows 7 32 bit and allow me to use that registerd licence key to do the 64 bit upgrade ? once it all works I will reformat the old 500 gb hard drive I just wanted to clone it first in case of any problems I could always revert back to my old stable 32 bit win 7 installation.

A:upgrading to 64 bit from 32 bit - clarification

With a clean install, using a upgrade DVD, you are given a choice of which drive you want to put the OS. You must format if going from 32 to 64 or 64 to 32

Hey, so I just need to clarify whether this ICS connection will work or not.

DSL->Host PC w/ wireless network adapter--->ICS--->laptop w/ wireless network adapter

So the DSL modem is connected to the Host PC through a wired connection. Now, is it possible to share the connection from wired to wireless, then have the wireless go through ICS and send the signal to the laptop with another wireless adapter? Now I know there's a better way to do this with a router and such, but I'm not going to be doing that this moment. I'm just wondering if the method I mentioned will work. Both PC's have XP with SP2.

Are there any special configurations I should be aware with? I've done this with another PC but that was through a wired connection and it worked perfectly. But I have very little experience with wireless, so I'm expecting things to be more complex.

A:Clarification if this ICS will work

Sure, you just need to configure the wireless adapters in Ad-Hoc mode. Other than that, it's a standard ICS configuration.

A. Which of the following is correct....
1. In a OEM Win 7 64-bit computer, it has both a IE 32-bit and IE 64-bit pre-installed.
2. In a OEM Win 7 64-bit computer, if you install IE 9 manually, both 32-bit and 64-bit version will be installed automatically.
3. None of the above is correct.

B. Why this happens only in 64-bit OS, why not in 32-bit OS?

C. Why are Win 7 64-bit OS users being advsed to use the 32-bit IE, but not the 64-bit counterpart ?

Thank you.

t-4-2

A:clarification required..... IE 32-bit and IE 64-bit

A: 1 is correct

B: Because a 32 bit OS isn't capable of running 64 bit programs.

C; There's no reason to use a 64 bit web browser. What would be the point? Would you expect web pages to open faster? Add in the fact that many broswer plug-ins don't work, or don't work well with the 64 bit browser, and you can see why it's best to use what works. You have to remember, just because something is 64 bit...doesn't make it better than 32 bit. Different, isn't always better.

I am a newbie to sysprep but am in need of just such a solution. I have been linked to Kari's tutorial thru this forum and hope he will see and reply. I made a win7 image backup of my os from computer "A" and cloned to a new drive in an identical computer "B". Both computers are hp5700 sff, win 7/32 bit, 1.8g intel duo, 4g ram. I booted computer "B" after the clone, and it works, but boots slowly, 2minutes, to logon. After getting to the desktop, it seems to work just like Computer "A".

Do I sysprep computer "B" that now has the new hd with the cloned os image in place to the restart mode, to correct my boot speed issue?
It has ie10, so should I check for the reg error 32 vs 64 and edit before I start?
Is there another way to fool the new machine into starting quickly? I did not understand the forum tutorial that dealt with changing default profile w/o sysprep.

A:Need clarification about my new SMPS

All of those are just as low quality and bad as each other, pretty much as bad as you can get in fact, I would not use any of them - Even if I was given a PC with one of those, I would replace it before I started using it.  The power supply is the one part of a PC you should never cheap out on, always get a good brand such as XFX, Seasonic, FSP, Antec, Corsair.etc.Notice how your current "500w" one only has 10amp on the +12v rail - This works out to 120w.  A good power supply should output over 80% of its rated wattage on the +12v rail, yours only outputs 24%!  Same with the Intex which despite being sold as 450w, also states that the total output power should not continuously exceed 200w.  Not only do they not come close to outputting their rated power, I highly doubt that they have the proper protection circuitry that a good unit would have.  If one of those fails (and it will), it is likely to take out other components with it.  It is also possible for something to short out inside the system, a good unit would detect a fault and shut down, those cheap ones generally don't and can cause wires melting and fires.etc.With power supplies, you really do get what you pay for.  Don't risk it.

How would I alter that if I only wanted to copy the C Drive (where HD is divided into C & E) or separately only wanted to copy the E drive to C?
If I copy both C & E to my new much larger D drive and then make that my new C drive will there be drive specification problems with the data from the E Drive? Would Norton System 2001 Windows checker correct the problems?

The XCOPY command only copies one sources at a time.

So, if you want to copy all of C you would do that first. Then you would run the command again (specifying E this time) to copy the other drive.

Of course, if you have duplicate files on the drives you will run into trouble... If drive E has a totally different directory structure though, it will be a very smooth copy.

Remember though, boot in Safe Mode before doing this. That way there will be no files in use by Windows (files in use will not copy).

They way I always use the command, so I don't accidentally copy to / from the wrong place is by going to the root of the DESTINATION drive. So, in your case, I would do this:

Boot in Safe Mode.
Go to Command Prompt and type:

D:
xcopy c:\ /s /e /k /r /h /c
xcopy e:\ /s /e /k /r /h /c
exit

shutdown, unhook old drive, make new drive standalone.

If you only want to copy one drive, just use one of the xcopy lines, not both.

As for drive specification problems - yes, you will have them if programs expect to be found on E. Utilities like Norton are supposed to help, but I've never tried any, so I really don't know.

I just wanted to get some clarification on a few things about setting up a SSD for 7. Yesterday I ordered a Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH080G2R5 80GB SSD and 7 64-bit. I have read through a lot of threads and sites about SSD setup, tweaks , trim etc.

I have downloaded the Intel? Solid State Drive Toolbox and Intel? SATA Solid-State Drive Firmware Update Tool . I am under the impression that I should first up date the firmware. The rest of this post is just for my clarification about SSD and 7 setup. If I have got something wrong please let me know.

A:SSD & 7 optimization clarification

Hi Gspoon,
I have had a Intel X25-M 80 for about a month now. There is a few things I might add.

Go to computer, right click your ssd and under general, uncheck " Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed...". Should be turned off.

Run WEI, this will let Win7 correctly detect the ssd and load it's defaults for ssds.

Hanging out at the OCZ forums (yes I have an Intel..shhhh lol) the R&D/Mods suggest to leave prefetch on and turn superfetch off. Now for the pagefile, they suggest leaving it on the ssd due to it's nature of small writes. There is also a general consensus to disable system restore on the ssd, personally I prefer the "safety net" factor so I keep mine enabled.

Here is the link that I'm referring to:

Can anyone clarify on win xp 32 bit & 64 bit versions.

n also how can we find whether the OS we are using is a 32 bit / 64 bit version of Win Xp.
Thanx for responses in advance.

A:clarification on win xp 32 bit & 64 bit versions

If you aren't sure what OS you are using, you are most likely running 32bit.

64bit is relatively new, you will need a 64bit CPU in order to run a 64bit OS, and vice versa. Windows x64 does run 32bit apps though. So you can still run Max Payne and Nero.

If you do have a 64 bit CPU and OS then day to day tasks run at twice the bandwidth, giving you better performance at most things.

Hello all,

I had a friend help me install Windows on my custom build a long time ago using a free OS from my university. He installed both Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate in 2 partitions (and I have another, separate logical volume for a total of 3). At the time I thought nothing of it however I'm ready to install Windows 10 and would prefer to have only one single volume/partition.

I currently only boot my Windows 7 Pro and use it for everything and as such my plan was to simply delete my Windows 7 Ultimate partition and add it to my Pro (C: ) drive. I ran into complications when I found out that my bootmgr (active partition) is actually my Windows 7 Ultimate (D: ) drive. I browsed through this thread: Bootmgr - Move to C:\ with EasyBCD and it seems simple enough to change.

My question is then: because I use my Pro for everything and EasyBCD is only free for non-commercial use (ie. my Ultimate) is my best course of action to boot into my Windows Ultimate(D: ) and move my bootmgr to my pro (C: ) drive?

While I have backed up all my important files I would just like clarification before proceeding. Will doing the above have any effect on my files on C:?

Would following this be any better: Move Windows 7 boot files to another drive ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is my scenario:

I have a client who is in a remote office (named VA). She is using Remote Desktop to connect to another machine/server (name MD). She has a printer connected to her machine in VA. What she would like to do is to using the MD machine via Remote Desktop and print to the printer in VA. Now the twist to this is that MD is in a domain, and VA is in a workgroup.

To my understanding, both machines will not see each other because they are not part of the same 'network', being a workgroup or domain so the MD machine will not be able to print to the printer, correct?

If that's the case, can I setup Remote Desktop to see the printer on VA, and allow it to print while using MD as the desktop? The reason I ask is that my Remote Desktop knowledge is slim to none (exhibit a, an earlier thread I made ) and someone claims he can print from MD to his printer at home when he remote desktops into their server (he is their IT guy, probably outsourced from the company).

For business and consumer notebooks alike, I just had no idea where this question belongs. Reading this forum I have found that all your notebooks (consumer and business) carry some form of International Warranty, but your notion of internaional warranty is rather strage: I have to send back the notebook to the country of purchase. Which, in my books does not count as international warranty, it is called national warranty. Sure, you can send any product back to the country of purchase from any manufacturer, you don't need special warranty to that, you shouldn't call this International Warranty, it just confuses the customer. What's the deal here?

Your boot disk is not correct and you will need to make another one from a seperate machine with Win98SE on it.... or it looks like your OS is not installed. You will need to reinstall it (don't worry you won't lose anything, just you will need to reinstall over your windows files.) Just put your CD in and boot from it (make sure your BIOS is set to read CD first)

I am running a Windows 8 OS for purposes of this inquiry. I don't religiously empty my recycle bin. I can go stretches of time without cleaning it. Today, I checked the recycle bin after doing some housekeeping on my fixed drives. I saw that there were other files that are showing deleted on a removable drive that could use the free space. I also saw some other files which I wasn't sure I wanted to remove permanently yet. So I highlighted some of the larger files in the recycle bin that are from my removable drive, and began the removal process. These files have been deleted for a long time already, compared to the files I had just deleted in my housekeeping. As I monitored the progress, I noticed that there were headers flashing as the removal was going on. Instead of seeing the file names of the files I was removing from the recycle bin, I was seeing 8-character stretches (which I call 'headers' for lack of knowing better), some of which seem to show parts of file names from a different directory. That alarmed me and I cut off the process, but it had gone through halfway and had cleaned out a few GB before I stopped it.

I have many data files on that removable drive, so much that I cannot remember most of them, but I certainly want to keep them. I have proceeded to access the removable drive again, and so far I do not notice anything wrong yet.

I took out my removable drive from my desktop for my travels earlier and plugged it back into my desktop toda... Read more

A:Clarification on Recycle Bin Emptying

It is rather difficult to advise you without some information as to what these files were
The vital and indeed most informative detail would have been to open the recycle bin - find one of these files and then right click click properties and ascertain the nature of the file
My best guess and on the information available that is all it can be - is that windows updates places certain files normally with alpha neumeric names on the largest drive available
They are not needed after the updates and were they to be on C Drive they would be deleted in the normal course of automatic maintenance
Net Framework Updates do the same, as indeed do a number of non-windows updates

I've seen a LOT of discussion about Windows 7 licensing and activation, but I have a technical question about it (vs. a LEGAL one)?

As an on-site service tech, I've run into several situations where users (mostly out of ignorance of the legalities of the licensing) attempted to re-use a license key intended for a single computer.

Does Microsoft actually have a mechanism in place with Windows 7 so when a retail license key is re-used on a new/different computer, it causes any previous computer running it to revert itself to a "not genuine" status? And if so, would this process be something not seen immediately -- but rather, something the user would run into randomly in the next 30 days or so?

Additionally, would the same be true of an "anytime upgrade" key purchased online?

I'm curious not because I'm looking for ways to skirt the law, but rather, because I've occasionally had customers insisting that their copy of Win 7 suddenly turned "non genuine" - and I'm wondering if this might not be the real reason people sometimes see this? (EG. They re-use a previously used CD key for 7 and initially it accepts it and the install appears to go fine. But then 30 days pass and the system checks in with a Microsoft server, which says "Oops... I already saw this key in use by another PC that checked in with me the other day." and it gets flagged.)

I do know this was NOT the way Microsoft handled activation for any of their other products ... Read more

A:Clarification needed on activation?

If you resuse a key, it will not be accepted on the second computer, there is no affect on the first.

You can install an OS, without givining the key. You would have 30 days to activate by phone. In this situation, you will slowly lose some of the Windows Features until, you can no longer use it. You do get MS warnings during the process

Using the same line of reasoining, if you do have an illegal copy or misused key. MS will notify you that it is not genuine and you slowly lose features until, you can no longer use the OS.

I do not want to go into detail as how MS operates, suffice it to say, it may take 30 or more days to be caught, but you will be caught.

Hi, over the past few weeks I've been getting all sorts of PC problems and I'm sure it's the MB but can't seem to prove it. I'll try and be as brief as I can.

The system was freezing up every so often and was becoming more regular. I was also getting freezes on boot up and hangs in the BIOS.
Also getting weird artifacting in the BIOS, see the screen shots.
After a BSOD involving the memory, I memtested and discovered one was faulty. Had it replaced (thanks Corsair) with two new sticks. Memtested all four and all were fine.

Then the freezes started again. Thought it might be the SSD but found the machine even froze from a bootable CD of Linux Mint.
Memtested the individual sticks, there was one (the new one of a pair that I received as replacement) that caused Memtest to crash twice, no errors found, just crashed.

I was finding the North/Southbridge heatsinks, RAM and SSD were all getting pretty hot too. Touchable hot but on the verge of too hot to touch for very long.
I tried a different PSU but still the same freezes.

I had a PSU cable short out the system too, it wouldn't boot while attached to the SSD but to the HDD it was okay.

Now the PC, at boot, can't find either SSD or HDD. It comes up with the message 'No device Found' and 'AHCI BIOS not installed'. It can read from a CD but the storage devices aren't seen on boot in the BIOS.

I'm sure it's the MB as everything seems to be showing faults, I'm worried if I keep trying to fix it it'll end up killi... Read more

Hi,

I too am having problems opening my pdf downloads (approx 100 of them on offer from my website) I have check out all questions on this forum concerning PDF files and still can not find an answer.

The message is that 'they are either NOT PDF files or they are corrupt'.

I have installed Foxit and I get the same message as I do with Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Pro. The strange thing is that I do not have a problem opening the PDF files on my computer using either of these programs

I would really appreciate some help as these PDF downloads contain patterns, diagrams and instructions (The 'How To') and are my products on offer, without these I have no business. As I charge for these downloads I obviously want no problems with them for my customers.

If I can't fix this problem is there any alternative to PDF that is suitable to use for the purpose of downloading files?

When a software company says "Create System Backup" just what are they saying? Does that backup include the operating system or just all your settings and data files? In order to do a system recovery after a complete crash, wouldn't you need to reload your OS and then use the "system backup" you had created?

A:System Backup Clarification

System Images are also backups. A system image is an entire copy of your system as it is at the time you created the image, restoring that image will bring you back to the point your computer was when you made the image, a complete mirror image. Any documents etc made after that will not be included if they were saved to the drive, after you made an image of said drive.

In reference to your question It would depend on the software/company, if you mention which software/company people may understand better what they may mean.

A system restore point, will restore the computer back a few days, weeks etc, and eliminate certain changes you have made since creating a restore point. However, any documents etc you created and saved onto that drive will remain intact.

For instance, creating a system restore point before drivers are updated will enable you to go back to before you installed those new drivers if there is an issue with them. System specific files will be backdated.

This part I am not too clear on -
There are also basic document backups, a backup of your personal data, data you have stored in your "My Documents" folder etc, and user specific settings, I think, like your libraries, desktop, contacts and favorites. I don't make them so I am not sure. This backup can be found by pressing Winkey + S and searching for "File History" (If I am correct)

I hope I didn't confuse the issue.

Hello all, yet another newcomer and somewhat of a real novice to what seems a marvellous site.
Usually a man in a shop does everything for me but thought l'd bite the bullet, as it costs me a fortune each visit, and have a go myself with of course some help from yourselves.
Suffice to say, before l update my profile with my specs, my machine will run W7.
At the moment l have two 500gb hard drives.
One drive is partitioned so that there is a C partition of 50gb and a D partition of 450gb.
The second drive F remains at 500gb.
I currently run XPHome SP3 in the C partition, however l'd like to try out W7 just to see what its all about.
Have read the tutorial about dual booting which is really good and seems to be what l need, but it's just some of the terminology that l'd like clarification on.
The partition examples show as 0 and 1 so l assume that this is the equivalent of my C and D?
Also, when one installs an OS say, XP, everything is written to the C drive.
If l install W7 and specify install to the D drive, is this what it will do? This is what l can't get my head around. (l still keep thinking in terms of just the C drive!).
What happens if l download something for W7. Sometimes, as per XP, you don't get an option and it'll download to the C drive whereas you would want this to go to the D drive.
Sorry, l know it's easy for a lot of you but l'm just that bit over cautious as l don't want to corrupt XP on my C drive at the moment.
Hope all the above makes sense, and sorr... Read more

A:Dual Boot for XP + W7 clarification

Hello willythecat, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have a look at the info below for some ideas on the best way to dual boot.

   Information

The easiest way to do away with boot issues between separate Operating Systems (OS) is to use the BIOS one time boot menu to select which OS to boot at system startup, each motherboard has an individual hot-key to tap during system start-up to access this menu.

If you have 2 separate Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and have one OS installed to one HDD and you want to install another OS to the second HDD, disconnect the HDD with the first OS installed on it and leave only the HDD you want to install the second OS to connected.

Just be sure not to change where the original HDD SATA cable was connected, it has to be re-connected to the exact same port to avoid boot issues.

Install the second OS to the connected HDD and when complete and the system is booting good, power down and reconnect the first HDD with the first OS on it.

This way the OSs will boot independently of each other and there will be no boot conflicts between the 2 separate OSs to have to sort later.

Then set the BIOS to boot the HDD / OS you want as default and if you want to start the other (new) OS you use the BIOS one-time boot menu to select that HDD / OS to start when the PC is started.Asus - F8

Hello everyone,

procedure. But before i go, i want to ask a couple question. Since the links is old enough so i think i will not get any replies soon.. hopefully someone here will be reply this asap.

I have a 320gb HDD with windows 7 32bit (MBR) installed. The purpose i'll be doing that procedure (links) so my other HDD (3tb) will be fully detected and running fine. The question is, will it be detected and running fine? or do i have to re-install the OS to the other drive (3tb)?

I just want to make sure that i'm not waste any time. I prefer to keep the OS in the 320gb HDD though if there is any way, so i will not bother to backup my 3tb HDD (already have datas from a friend, and formatted as gpt)

my system is:
-AMD phenom x4 965be
-Asrock 770de3l

Sorry if my English is not correct. Thanks for the support.

A:Need clarification before proceeding to convert mbr-gpt

You can continue to use the 320 GB MBR 32 bit drive for the OS and then initialize the 3 TB disk as GPT.

You say "I prefer to keep the OS in the 320gb HDD", but you also say "I will be doing this

So, it's not clear to me what you want to do.

Both my housemate and I connect our computers to the internet via LAN cable that is wired throughout the house which then goes through arouter which is plugged into the modem.

Our computers are all "stand alone" machines, they do not communicate, and there are no shared peripherals (network printer, etc. I connect to my printer via USB).

There is a wireless network that my housemate set up recently, but I don't use it. Both of our computers are usually connected (and have updated security programs) 24/7.

I am trying to figure out whether this sort of set up means my computer is on a home "network" or if it just has an "internet connection".

I'm trying to make sure the computers are not being shared or accessed without permission or if that is even possible through the LAN cables.

I was just looking through my Event Viewer because of other issues, and I noticed this:

Event ID 1103 Dhcp-Client "Your computer was successfully assigned an address from the network, and it can now connect to other computers." I have no idea if this means anything or not.

It is frustrating to try to understand what "connections" are normal processes initiated by my computer or something initiated by a human.

I apologize for my ignorance but whenever I look for information concerning networking, sharing and privacy all I find is information on how to make connections, not how to keep them from happening.

Thanks

My first post =)Just recently, I began to notice problems on my computer, and so I went to some forums and cleansed my computer with scans including Ad-Aware SE Personal, AVG 7.5, Panda online's thingamabob, etc. I removed a whole ton of malware on my computer. However, I noticed that "Messenger Service" was continually popping up and telling me to go to blacklisted sites (clean32.com, cleanregpro.com, etc). I did a bit of searching and stopped the popups by disabling the Windows Messenger Service. However, one thing that concerns me is that this messenger service is associated with svchost.exe - I have the feeling that file is infected, even though all of my full computer scans come out to be clean.I'm going to provide quite a bit of information now, just to make sure.Screenshot of previous problem:Now, a HijackThis log file (dunno if you guys use this).Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 10:11:46 PM, on 3/15/2007Platform: Windows XP (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 (6.00.2600.0000)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exeC:\PROGRA~1&... Hey,

I was wondering if any one could help me with an Issue I?m currently experiencing on my system, I believe it is my PSU but I?m unsure.

My Specs are as follows:

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.66GHz (1333FSB)

Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2900 Pro SILENT Heatpipe 512MB (PCI-E) (Over clocked to an XT)

Now the problem is a simple one, my computer restarts. But only (so far) in 3d mark 2006, I have played call of duty 4 demo and unreal III maxed out just to grind it and see if my pc cuts out,... it doesn?t, now in 3d mark 2006 it gets about half way through and then cuts out (the computer restarts) the first thing I check is the event viewer and check the logs.

There is nothing in there on an error, I have unchecked the restart pc at blue screen so it is not a blue screen issue. the temperature of my processor runs at 40 - 50C under pressure and the GPU runs at about 60 - 70 under pressure, my first thought was that over clocking the GPU to an XT is the issue,

However now I am unsure and need some clarification, because it?s just cutting out and restarting it indication a PSU issue, and when I go into PC wizard (free program to check many things) my PSU shows the following:

12V Voltage = 13.77V

3.3V Voltage = 1.90V

A:PSU seems to be faulty as pc restarts, need some clarification

Well if your 3.3V Voltage = 1.90V then you have a critical problem with the power supply (assuming reading is correct) The 12V also looks a little high to me. I would suggest obtaining a power supply tester ASAP and confirming the readings. In the mean time I would try to refrain from using the computer as you may do a lot more damage.

Hello,
I have an Intel i5-2400, 3.1 GHz, Max Turbo Frequency 3.4 GHz.
In the MSI Bios CPU Specification, it states under CPU Specification:

"Unlocked (Min: 16, Max 38, Limit)"

If I'm able to overclock the processor to 3.8 Ghz, isn't it technically an unlocked processor, although it's not a "K" version?

A:Unlocked processor clarification.

Hey p - I found this. It explains things a little.

Intel i5 2400 Overclocking cap? - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

As with things Intel, what they say and what they do.........

Didn't really know which forum to post in, sorry., and I hope I used the proper term in the title.

I'm STILL trying to find an answer to leftovers from an uninstall & when I search for my item I get more results of a different ext. than what I typed in so am wondering if they mean the same thing.

I'm typing in '.inf' but most results come up as '.dll', which to a noob like me doesn't make sense.

Thanks.

A:I need clarification on file extensions

Not sure what you are getting but the proper way to search for an extension is ext: extension So in you case search for ext: inf

Note you don't include the dot.

When I start the computer up, the Windows Boot Manager screen comes on. I press enter, but every time the desktop comes up, the icons have rearranged themselves to be as close to the left hand side of the screen as possible. Also, the computer is chucking me out of games sometimes, when before they didnt. Could I be infected?

This is the first post I have done on this forum, so if I have done something wrong, please let me know. Thanks

I have a 4 year old computer that runs perfectly, except when I turn it off at night and then back on the next day, I loose a few hours on the time date at bottom of screen. I ajust each time I use it but the same thing happens each time I turn it off. Could it be the clock battery or ? My operating system is Windows XP Home
Thanks Lc

A:Windows XP time/date clock looses time after shut down.

Welcome to TSG...A bad CMOS battery will cause your machine to lose time. If the system is four years old, you're eligible for that issue...also, if the system has spent any lengthy amount of time (weeks or more) unplugged from AC power, it's more likely to happen.

Next reboot (after leaving it overnight), enter BIOS (setup) and see if the time there is slipping as well.

The battery itself (if that's what's bad) is cheap to replace...less than five bucks.

Please give us some specs on the hardware-make, model, etc.-and we can help you with battery replacement instructions.
