BCDEdit /enum showing "The boot configuration data store could not be opened"

Q: BCDEdit /enum showing "The boot configuration data store could not be opened"

somehow my win7 system boot records seems corrupted hence it's showing OS not found. i have tried with bcdedit /enum & its showing "The boot configuration data store could not be found. The requested system device cannot be found". tried
bootrec /fixmbr & bootrec /fixboot which is showing sucessfully. bootrec /rebuildbcd is able to detect C:\windows but showing "the requested system device cannot be found" while adding installation to boot list. i went into diskpart, selected
EFI partition & able to see EFI contents (bootx64.efi/bootmgr.efi etc) there.
Kindly suggest how can i recreate BCDstore without reinstallation.

A: BCDEdit /enum showing "The boot configuration data store could not be opened"

When you boot the machine make sure you are booting with a UEFI device i.e. if you boot with a Win7 CD, make sure that the CD is booting from UEFI and not legacy BIOS CD. You have to boot from the same type of partition that the hard drive was created with
for BCDEdit to work.

So if you booted from WDS network, then you need to boot from a UEFI ethernet/pxe connection.

Hi Kevin Hill I guess you're trying to use BCDEdit from the command prompt? You need to right-click on the Windows logo and select Command Prompt (Administrator) otherwise it won't work as you need Admin Rights to use that utility.

We are getting the above error randomly on some of the laptops we have deployed. The error comes right after you boot or when the windows 7 is left running. There are no special software running. The error in details is below.
"The boot configuration Data (BCD) settings for the following boot application have changed since Bitlocker was enabled
boot appplication: \windows\system32\winload.exe
change settings: 0x26000090
You must supply a bitlocker recovery key to start this system.
Confirm that the changes to the BCD settings are trusted.

If the changes are trusted then suspend and resume bitlocker. This will reset bitlocker to use the new BCD settings.
Otherwise restore the original BCD settings"
Can anyone please explain on how to correct this error. As before this is happening on few of the machines and we are seeing more as we go. Any tips would be nice...Thanks

This is the message I get when I try to boot:

"The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors"

File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

I had a linux partition installed separate from my windows partition. I deleted the linux partition, which apparently messed up the windows boot loader since it seems to have been overwritten by the linux boot loader. i tried installing linux again to restore its bootloader, but selecting windows from the boot loader is no use since the windows boot loader no longer works. i've been using the command prompt in the windows 8 recovery environment but have not had success so far.

Boot into System Recovery Options to confirm the 100mb System Reserved or C is Partition Marked Active then run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times.

I have no idea where to start, a friend of mine sent me a link for Windows 8 Pro link, it's not original nor cracked, it's just non-activated (it kept asking me for activation key), that's not the problem tho.
I have windows 7 already, downloaded the iso he sent me, I tried to extract it into a flash, tried to boot from it, it didn't work, I said why not extracting it? I did, and opened setup.exe, and installed windows 8 successfully! And I could dual-boot normally.
I went back on windows 7, backed up my files into another partition, renamed the partitions into Windows 7, Windows 8, Others(backup) and went to windows 8 and started restorting from the new parition, after all I went to delete windows 7 in a stupid way by deleting the Windows 7 partition, it didn't work fully, some folders stayed as Windows/Windows.old ....etc, so I went to windows 8 partition to extend it since I deleted lot of gbs off the windows 7 partition, I've done so, and there was option saying to make it primary parition althought it was checked on windows 7, I checked on it and it went unchecked on windows 7, I didn't care much.. and it asked for reboot, and I did.

And here's the problem, it cannot boot anymore ...
It gives this error:

Ok, I built a system for my oldest daughter based on the take offs of my own upgrades. A MSI Kt4AV mobo is now her mobo. The odd thing now when booting is it asks EVERY time on boot, to press the space bar as the case has been opened. I had opened and closed my case a gazillion times during my time with this mobo and never got this message. It's a new case but essentially it is my entire old system, never happend once to, happens EVERY time with hers. If you don't hit the space bar within 3 secs of boot, it "hangs" on that screen and you have to reset it. Any ideas, I've looked through the CMOS and see no on/off for this option. Just annoying, not a major issue.

A:"case opened, press spacebar" on boot ?!?!

Some cases have a small switch, located somewhere around the side panel. This switch gets activated when the side panel is closed. If the side panel is not activating the switch, it will send a signal to the mobo, saying the side panel is open. A small cable goes from the switch to the mobo headers. It is possible that this switch has gone bad.

If this is the case with your`s. Simple unplugging the wire from the mobo should stop it.

If that`s not the case, then I`m out of ideas.

When I do this action: to see if I can do a restore etc...

Also I canot move this panel or close the window.

I have a back up on another external drive ..... plus I have made a repair disk and so on when I first got the machine.

I would be stoked if you could provide me with the next steps so I can resolve this situation.

Here is my situation. I have 2 hard drives. C:, which is where I have Windows XP installed and D:, where I have various music, movies and games installed. Basically D: is my storage drive.

I decided to set up a dual boot configuration with Windows XP and Vista Ultimate. As I said Windows XP was already installed on C:. I used partition magic to reduce C:'s size so I would have enough space to create a new partition on the XP drive for Vista. I created it and installed Vista fine and now I can choose whether I load XP or Vista on startup.

Vista seems to be running fine however when I open explorer I encounter a problem. C:, which in Vista is the main partition displays and can be accessed fine. D:, which is the main partition for XP (and is displayed as C: when booting in XP) displays and can be accessed fine. E:, which is the storage drive I mentioned (displayed as D: when booting in XP) earlier is named Access Denied in Vista. When I click on it in explorer it says Access Denied. When in XP all drives and partitions display and can be accessed fine. When in Vista, all drives and partitions except E: (D: when in XP) display and can be accessed fine.

I have read in some forums that I should "take ownership" of E: (in Vista) and that will allow me access. As I understand it this would then deny me access to it while in XP and that is obviously not good because the reason I chose to dual boot is so I can access everything from both operating systems.

I've noticed that some of the websites I've visited that have flash movies have "no-cache" "no-store" headers that seem to prevent (or "ask" I should say) my browser (Firefox) from locally caching the movies to my HD. This is a bit of a nuisance when I revisit the same video and have to wait for it to download all over again.

Just curious, but can you override this in Firefox, i.e. force Firefox to locally cache the videos? Sure would save some time when I watch long videos again (or in most cases--show it to a friend!).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

A:Can you override "no-cache", "no-store" headers?

In case anyone else is interested, I did find a solution. Someone in another forum pointed me to "Proxomitron" ( Basically you set it up as a local proxy on your computer, and then you can easily use it to modify the incoming html pages to your browser so that they no longer have the no-cache no-store headers. Works great!

Another similar solution might be Privoxy ( which is another local proxy program for your computer, but you have to be versed in PERL to set up its filters/rules.

When I installed Windows 7 Pro64bit into a partition on my hard drive Windows dual boot was added but apparently all the files were placed in the root of the XP partition probably because it was the only one marked as primary.

To keep from loosing System Restore points for the XP partition I had to add KB926185 to both XP and W7. Neither operating system uses the other's partition but now when I wanted to use bcdedit uder W7 to change the default operating system to boot the boot store cannot be found.

I was able to use the W7 install CD to get to a command prompt and enter bootrec.exe and then bcdedit /enum. I don't know if bcdedit /default would work at this point.

I could remove the KB926185 registry update but I would loose all my System Restore points for XP.

Hi Folks,
I am running with an ASUS Pro31 Series and Windows XP Pro. In trying to fix a problem with Microsoft Outlooks, I was frequently rebooting my computer (trying to access the SAFE MODE boot menu) and it has now permanently failed to boot and has the following error on screen:

"Missing Operating System"

I have tried but cannot seem to access the menu where you can select to reboot in "Safe Mode" etc. I can only access the BIOS SETUP UTILITY using F2 and the BIOS RAM EASY FLASH UTILITY using F4.

Using the recovery DVD I got as far as the three options:
- Recover Windows XP to first partition
- Recover Windows XP to entire HD
- Recover Windows XP to entire HD with 2 partitions

I stopped there because it is essential that I retrieve the data from the HD. I am not concerned about the laptop, just the data. Yes I am a dumb dumb for not backing all of it up.

This laptop was supplied to me by my employer, so I am not sure how many partiotions it came with etc. Is it safe to assume that the first partition contains the C: drive data?

Are there any fancy tools I can get my hands on - over the net or otherwise - to try to get it booting normally again?

If not, what options would I have for trying to get the data off the HD?

Also, why does is it that I cannot access the SAFE MODE start up menu?

So a while ago my computer crashed and I wasn't sure what it was so I tried many things because I wasn't getting any BIOS beeps so I thought it was the motherboard but long story short it's the graphics card, so I've replaced that with my old one for now. But since I took out so many parts so many times I keep getting the

And I've set the SSD to the primary boot, I've tried to directly boot it via BIOS but they both still give the same result, I've put the Win7 disk in and done a repair but still, no change.

Since my OS is installed to my SSD, is there a chance it could have corrupted the files or the actual drive when the computer crashed? From what I heard SSD's seem to be a bit fragile.

Any help or recommendations would greatly appreciated.

After you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media.

Have you tried the factory recovery option built into the PC frm the factory, I believe it's the F12 key (for HP) at PC startup, that will over-write any date you may be trying to save though.

There is also the option in this tutorial linked below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

Hello all, I'm new & having a spot of trouble so I decided to ask for some help here after seeing many other similar issues resolved

The current situation:
I have 1 partition containing my windows 7 install, but it won't even get to the stage where I can select (e.g.) safe mode because it hangs at "Verifying DMI pool data....." after the POST. The windows 7 partition is the active partition. Startup recovery via the windows 7 cd does not help, and bootrec commands give "element not found". I think it's because I deleted some crucial files off what was the boot partition (an XP partition), then deleted that partition.

The question:
How do I get my windows 7 install to boot?
The Full Story (aka the wall of text)

How it happened

When I set up the installs on my current system hard drive a year or two ago, I initially installed Windows XP Pro (x86) on a 100gb partition, then decided to install Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on the remaining 830gb or so. About a month later I realized I barely used the XP install but didn't want to reinstall everything, so from my 7 install I deleted all the directories except Windows and any directories marked as System, which were hidden (i.e. left all files in the root of the XP partition alone). I intended to resize the XP partition later & use the reclaimed space, but I ended up unmapping the drive letter from the XP drive & so forgot about it.

Fast forward to a few days ago. I was (ironically, when you cons... Read more

A:Boot failure - Hangs at "Verifying DMI pool data"

Solved it; my system hard drive was not the first hard drive in the BIOS boot priority list. Once I changed the priority to make that hard drive the first hard drive, it got past the Verifying DMI pool data" step after about 15 seconds of waiting, and gave me the "BOOTMGR is missing", "Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart" messages.

I went into the setup dvd, and this time it actually spent some time searching for windows installations. It found one and prompted me to fix it (separate from startup repair), I chose no and went into the command prompt and did bootrec /fixboot. I didn't get "element not found" this time!

Sadly after a restart I still couldn't boot into windows, so I fired up the setup CD and this time allowed the repair. After a reboot, it still didn't work, so I fired up the dvd again yet again and used the manual "Startup Repair" option from the list of about 5 options. This time the diagnostic information gave a different message, something like "the boot record is corrupt", and after clicking Finish, it restarted and windows booted

I've created a bootable Windows 7 usb using Rufus. But when I go to boot it (by changing First Boot Device in BIOS to Removable), it just gets stuck at "Verifying DMI Pool Data...". What's wrong?

I even checked the usb drive using MobaLiveCD, and it works fine.

Hi, i decided to upgrade my windows vista to windows 7 so I did a clean install. I didnt really like it but thought i might get used to it eventually so decided to install vista again on a separate partition and do a dual boot setup. The partition was already setup when i bought the computer from new, so i just formatted it and installed vista on that. It all worked fine at first and vista loaded up. But then it just restarted my computer for no reason and now the system hangs on "Verifying DMI pool data...Update Sucess!"

I dont have any recovery disks so how can i sort this problem?
id like to sort it without losing all my data, although I fear this might not happen, I just want to get it working again.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

ok this is nuts. i turn on the computer and after detecting hd and cdrom etc, the "VERIFYING DMI POOL DATA" appears and then it says booting from cdrom .... failure...

the screen goes blank and then it reboots. this "loop" goes on and on..

so i changed the boot order to HD first. does the same thing.

i inserted the XP cdrom and cahnged the boot order back to cdrom first and it still goes in a loop. it does not boot from the cdrom.

i checked all the connections and they are fine. in Cmos the setup shows the cdrom and the HDrive.

I have a system with 3 drives disk0, disk1, and disk2.
What I'd ultimately like to do is install Windows 7 on disk0 and install Linux on disk1.
Then I want to have disk2 split into 2 partitions(part0, part1) for programs and other misc install files.
However I don't want disk1 and disk2part1 to be visible while using disk0 and disk2part0 and vice versa.
Is there any way to make this possible?
Sorry if it sounds confusing this was the best way I could think of explaining what I'm trying to do.

This is my first time trying to fix a computer, so please forgive my ignorance.

I recently changed the motherboard and hard drive on my hp computer. Before I did that, I was able to create a windows 7 recovery cd (before the old HD died entirely), and I also have a system image on an external hard drive. Problem is that I cannot get past "Verifying DMI pool data... INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". At first, I would put the disk in, but my keyboard wouldn't work, so I couldn't press the enter key. (Although oddly, the keyboard does work to get me into BIOS and in BIOS). So, after some research, I went into BIOS and changed the USB keyboard setting to enabled. After that when I went back to try to boot again, as soon as it got to "verifying...", it waited a couple of seconds and then just turned off. I didn't even have time to put a cd in and press enter, even if I wanted to. Now it just keeps doing the same thing. I have the boot priority set to CDROM first, then HD, and to be quite honest, I am not even sure that was the right move. The HD is blank - I haven't done anything to it. The only thing I know is a friend who is head of IT for his company, gave me this HD because he had it lying around. It is in working order, but I have no idea about partitioning, or what the even is. I don't know... I am confused and have spent HOURS trying to figure this out with no luck.

Hoping someone can help!

I could be wrong here (it will definitely need clarification) but an HP machine will have an OEM install, and since you've changed the motherboard that Windows installation will no longer be valid. Maybe that's why the recovery disks aren't working.

I just got a new Hewlett Packard computer with Windows XP. The CD drive is a combo CD reader, writer and DVD. The main reason I need it is to backup my many documents, database programs (RootsMagic family history, Quicken, etc.), photographs and drawings. The pre-installed burning program on the computer is Adaptec's (I think) Sonic RecordNow!, which is useless for my needs because of the way it works. The HP tech suggested I download DLA to enable me to use "drag & drop" through Windows Explorer, but I haven't had much luck with that, either. What I need is to be able to use a CD-RW as a giant floppy - to add, delete, copy, edit and move files, just as I do on my regular floppies, using "drag & drop" through Windows Explorer, or "save as...". What software do I need for this? Please use "baby-talk" with me, because I don't understand any of the initials, terms and technical language I see all over these forums. Thanks, Dellasha

As the above title describes ""Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

I've tried every possible fix. CMD -> ipconfig /release - ipconfig /renew - reboot computer, nothing happens.

On the Network Sharing Center - I get my Network shown as "Unidentified Network."

I tried Uninstalling and Re-Installing the NIC, no luck. Updating the Driver didn't help either as it says it's up-to-date.

I've tried manually assigning the IP address, but I don't think I did it correctly, as I am quite new with Networking problems and especially with all the IP addresses', DNS, DHCP. etc. So I need support with that and try it out whether that fix will work, although I doubt at this point since I tried everything.

I tried disabling the IPv6 as well that did nothing too.

I also RESET my router, which also had no affect. I am using the VIRGINMEDIA SUPER HUB ROUTER. It's a Fibre Optic Connection.

I also called my ISP, they suggested the Internet is all stable and has no connection problems. The Technician I spoke to over the phone said that there is something at fault with my computer itself and not the Router or Internet connection. In other words, my NIC.

I'm trying to do a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit but i can't get the installer to load.
I have access to a Xubuntu install and a OS X install.
The original hard drive Windows 7 was installed on stopped working completely. So, I've bought a brand new one.
I followed the steps I did the first time I installed Windows 7 - converting the iso to and img with OS X's hdiutil and the dd command to burn it to a USB.
This time I would just get a "please insert proper boot media" error.
I went to my Xubuntu computer (it's used like a chromebook - i'm not a big linux guy) and tried WinUSB.
These USB keys lead to a screen that had a flashing underscore a few spaces from the top of the screen.
It dawned on me that the first thing I did when I installed windows the first time was update the bios. So I tried flashing a few different BIOS versions, but none of them made a difference>
I really need help - I can't think of anything else to try

IF i attempt to make "active", i get a warning about "...if contains operating system...." etc..

Here is screenshot of when i attempt to add drive letter:, and a screenshot of warning when i attempt to make "active"

A:Dual Boot: Cannot "see" data partition

Yes, its true. It is not to activate a partition that doednt contain os. In this case your computer will stop working (bcoz that partition doesnt have any boot image).

Look for the "system reserved" partition (about 100 mb). If it is activated, there is no problem at all. The partitions containing os should have boot flag. In this situation, I think you will be able to operate all the partitions in explorer in either os, if there is not a ownership problem.

I think it is wise to have a third party disk manager (like acronis or paragon) to have a good dual boot system, and a bcd editor like vista boot pro or easybcd.

I added some apps from the Store to my initial Owner/Admin account on Win 8.1. Today, I wanted to have them show on the account that will be used for everyday non-admin stuff. I logged into Microsoft with this account and attempted to add them to show on this account (after temporarily promoting account to Admin). Store said it was "already installed." So....I logged back into initial owner/admin account, and used the "uninstall" (not just unpin) option on the bottom of the Start Screen, thinking that I couldn't have them on two accounts so I'll get rid of them on one account. But...when I went back to install the apps on the new account from the Store, I get the same message. I looked for the apps via Control Panel, but nothing shows.

How can I get these apps to install/reinstall when they think they're already there? Are they on my machine where I can actually see/remove/use them? Where are they hiding? I'm stumped.

A:How can I "reinstall" an "uninstalled" app from store?

hmmm, my2cents, I see your response in my notification email, but not here...

You said: I'm not an apps guy at all. In fact, I don't even have an MS login; however, I have read that you can go to the store,
right-click, and select "your apps" to possibly do what you are describing.

Tried that, but same result, it shows as "my app" but I can't install it because the Store thinks it's installed already.

Guess I should have sought advice BEFORE uninstalling those things.

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Just a few days ago I noticed a strange problem. I was downloading a program with Firefox (latest version) and the download dialogue froze up when I opted to save the file. I thought Firefox was being buggy, so I closed it and reopened, but the problem persisted. My next step was to reboot. No luck. I ran a full virus scan with Norton, and downloaded AdAware to see if spyware could be causing a problem. I was clean. I later found that if I just wait a really long time, the dialogue box to choose the file's location eventually comes up. After this, the problem seems to be gone until I reboot. In other words, once I wait forever for the box to pop up, the next time I download something it pops up instantly like it should. I unfortunately noticed that this problem wasn't unique to firefox. I clicked to add a file to my Winamp playlist, and the same thing happened. Winamp froze and a few minutes later the Open File box popped up and everything was fine. It also happened with AIM when I tried to send a file to a friend. This problem was very annoying to google because the combination of words describing the problem comes up with irrelavent hits. I'm very computer literate but this problem confounds me. I'd appreciate any help or insight. Hijack This log available upon request.

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

I am having problems with Internet Explorer. When I open IE 7, it immediately freezes upon opening the first page. I had this problem months ago and resolved the similar problem by finding an add-on that was at fault. This time, the same thing began to happen. I tried running IE 7 in no add-ons mode and it still froze when trying to load the homepage. I tried different home pages to see if it was but same problem. I uninstalled IE 7 and began experiencing the exact same problem with IE 6. I have run these programs multiple times:
Ad-aware, AVG anti-spyware, a-squared, mcafee, symantic, hijackthis, ccleaner,
These programs found a few spy ware and symantic found two backdoor trojans within the symantic folder. It continues to find these files everytime i run the program. I have rebooted the machine more times than i care to count. Firefox works fine, and i can get around to open IE 7 through the HELP section in control panel, but after maybe 10 seconds, it freezes. I think it is a program that is loading at the same time maybe and that is keeping IE from running correctly. Also, when it stops responding, I have to open task manager to close it in the processes tab. It also shows up twice in the applications tab, but only after it freezes. Please help. Hi Everyone,

A colleague of mine "Mary" is getting a scripting error in her Inbox whenever she looks at emails from one specific staff member, "Jill". Jill is a genuine sender, the messages that she sends do not get moved into Mary's junk, and the content of the emails is business related (e.g.: not funnies, etc).

Mary is using a Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) box with Office Outlook 2010 (32 bit) installed. Additionally she is using Office 365, so emails are being sent / received from the "cloud". I don't think that the cloud itself is the issue, and Mary can open emails from all other staff members, and customers (literally hundreds of different senders) without issue.

I requested that Jill send the same emails through to me in the hope that I could replicate the issue on my computer - however upon receiving the emails I did not see a scripting error. This is quite puzzling and leads me to believe that the issue is on Mary's computer - however it is conceivable that it is a combination of settings on both Mary's & Jill's computers!!!

At any rate here is a screen shot of the scripting error:

Image of Scripting Error

It has been given to me on good authority that the issue is likely one of the Outlook plug-ins, however with literally tens of plug-ins installed I don't want to take "a stab in the dark" and make the situation worse.

If anybody has any suggestions on how to fix this issue they will be greatly appr... Read more

Im trying to run a script .reg file , but i cant open it because windows keeps blocking it.
I cant figure out how to disable this blocking / security feature.

Windows 7 Ultimate,

The error message when i try to run or edit the .reg file is as follows:

"These files can't be opened"

Your Internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened"

Ive tried disabling every bit of security i can possibly think of.... AV, UAC,windows firewall, killed pretty much every possible security option in the IE8, cant even open the .reg file in safe mode,

I searched for about a hour online, but only found irrelevant things, and mostly having to deal with UAC.
Any ideas?
Thanks for reading.

Just joined to say thank you to Squeezin who solved my problem in his thread:

What's with Windows having problems with long file names? This is not the first time I've been troubled by this Windows 7 peculiarity. The funny thing is that I did not have this problem with my old Win 7 installation until I wiped out my hard drive and did a fresh install of Win 7.

Anyway it's now solved and I'll always keep in mind the problem of long file names.

Thank you Squeezin.

Hello, I bought my daughter a used Dell P3 OptiPlex GX110 pc which is working well and is well suited to her needs, however she always gets this annoying message during the boot up process,it reads. "Alert! the case has been previously opened."
On opening up the case lid I noticed a little spring loaded switch at the front of the case that pops up when the case is opened upwards and is pushed down when the case lid is lowered. I have disconnected the lead wires to this switch but to no avail, the message still appears at bootup. Hoping someone can help.

A:Solved: Dell pc "Alert! case has been opened" message

look in the bios, there should be an option to turn the annoyance off

and btw, bought? you should be paying the guy to take it off his hands! I own that same model from a looong time ago. I don't believe it has been booted in the past 5-6 years.

Hi! I connect my computer to the internet via a TP-Link router using an ethernet cable. When I turn the router on, I receive internet access, and it works fine. After a short period of time, I can't open any website, although the LAN connection status in my Windows XP SP3 is "connected"! When that happens, the LAN LED on the router is flashing while it lights without flashing in the natural situations!
**** NOTE: I have a laptop connected to the router wirelessly, and the internet works fine in it.
I hope to get fast response!

First let me give you some background information. My SSD had 3 partitions in this order; System Reserved, Win7 and Win8. I deleted the Win7 partition and used ?msconfig? to remove Win7 from the Boot tab, without selecting the ?make options permanent? option.(I thought I read somewhere to be careful if selecting this) I then used AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro 5.2 to move Win8 to the Unallocated space before Win8, where Win7 used to be.

Now every time I boot the laptop, before the Win8 user sign in screen, it now says ?Loading System...? in the upper left corner of the screen. Why does it now say ?Loading System...?? Can I clean out old Boot entries? I included the data from bcdedit /enum all.

I had the same problem with my Office 2007. I found that I had actually installed a trial version of Office 2007 Professional that came with my Office Basic. When it expired, nothing worked.

So, I went to and selected the option to download a backup copy of the software (since it didn't come with a CD). When it's done downloading (I have 1.5 MBps down and it takes roughly an hour), I have the license key that came with the computer to activate the version I should have installed to begin with!

Hope that helps!

I opened a email on my msn on Monday and I started to download the file when I realized something was wrong and it wouldn't let me cancel so I turned the computer off in hopes that it would stop it. Starting Wednesday I get pop-ups through out the day that read, at the top "winntr1" and then below "the specified file can not be opened". Today I have started getting a similar pop-up that won't stop that says, at the top "winntr1" and then below "Not enough storage space is available to complete this operation". I found this site by googling my issue and found a similar thread, Infected email ('fotos 27/06'), apparent trojan, bulk resending of itself to contacts, from August 1st. After initial boot up and "start-up" programs load, then "My Computer" is opening as a startup on the desk top.

This occured only after I ran the RegCure scan and fix features of RegCure. After doing the fix errors a couple of programs would not open properly. I had done a backup of the registry so I did a restore and all my programs began working fine.

However, this is when "My Computer" started opening at the desktop after the windows start up. I have checked ALL the startup locations and this action is not showing up. I have checked msconfig and nothing there under startup.

Using WinPatrol under the "Secret Startup Area", Winlogon Shell with a command of Explorer.exe is listed. The type of file is Logon_Shell by Microsoft Corp.

I was able to locate this in the Regisry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENT VERSION\WINLOGON. SHELL is listed with explore.exe

Is this the culprit? If so how do I fix it? If not what might be causing the problem. It only showed up after using RegCure.

I tried copying a fresh version of the file to \Windows\System32. No dice. I tried renaming it all uppercase and then all lowercase. Nothing. I put a copy in the root directory. No effect. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked.

Then--doh!--I stopped thrashing and did what I should have done initially: I dug into the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned about XP's built-in Rebuild command. It can often easily fix "Missing HAL" and similar problems in just a minute or two. If you know about this command and how to use it, you can potentially save yourself hours and hours of manually reinstalling or rebuilding a failed operating system.

Hi Quin,

I am now facing the same issues you described in this post dated March 2007. I run McAfee full edition and it is not able to find anything neither Adware. My computer shows some other strange symptoms as well, like missing system tray icons but the IE issue is very similar to yours. I am using IE6 and I am quite sure some program has crept into IE surreptitiously. Did you manage to solve your problem?

I think it is a program that is loading at the same time maybe and that ... Read more

Hi there,

A while back I tried to add my hotmail account to Outlook 2003. At the time I didn't have the Outlook Connector so I think this caused the Hotmail account to be created without accurate links to the website... stupidly I did it again with the same problem. Now I've got two "Hotmail" folders in Outlook that cannot be opened or used to send/receive emails. When I click on the Folder I get the message "The set of folders could not be opened" - clicking on Show Help>> I get:

This error usually appears if the OST or PST file you are using is:

On a share on a server and the network is down
To correct this problem, store the OST or PST file on the local computer.
You may also want to run the scanost.exe and scanpst.exe tools to verify file integrity.

All I would like to do now is remove the two folders that say "Hotmail".

Hi all,

Working on a Win10 touchscreen desktop for a friend who just got scammed by one those fake "call this number, your computer is infected" ads. She foolishly let somebody from Indian remote into her computer and install some fake "weather" software which just caused many fake error messages to appear on boot and every so often to trick you into paying them.

That all being said, I've cleaned all the Malware off of it and everything is back to normal EXCEPT...

Half the programs "including her sound functionality/volume control applet in the system tray" won't start or load and install all just give a "...can't be opened using built-in Administrator account." error....

Is there any way to fix this? Everything worked fine before, and the computer only has one user account set as Administrator....?

Thanks for any help!

A:"...can't be opened using built-in Administrator account."

I would create another user account set as administrator and see if the problem carries over to the new account. If it does, I would say it is time for a clean install.

I recently posted on this forum regarding a problem with my RAM on my laptop, which I have subsequently sent for repair.

(See )

And so I came to look at my backups on an external HDD and found that they are stored within 3 separate brief cases (all created on the same system), none of which I am able to access. When I try to open them I receive the error,

?The Briefcase cannot be opened because the disk is inaccessible. Verify that the disk is accessible.?

I know that this is probably caused by the fact that the original location (my broken laptop) is not connected, but if that laptops HDD is wiped while being repaired I don?t know of any way to access my back up files.

I read something on this forum with a very similar problem involving using command prompt and deleting the ?Brief Case Index File? or something along those lines, but I didn?t understand the instructions. And so if someone could please help me out and give some detailed, explicit direction I would be so very grateful.

All replies would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

A:"Briefcase cannot be opened because the disk is inaccessible" - Please Help

I have actually managed to solve this problem myself! So I'm all :grinthumb

For anyone else who has the same problem I'm gogin to describe exactly what I did. I dont know if all of the steps are strictly necessary but it wokrd and thats all that matters so here it is.

My brief case files were stored on an extenal HDD and the OS was Vista home basic.

1. Copy the brief case to a new location on the external HDD.
2. Right click on the brief case and change the properties to hidden and when asked apply this to 'all files and subfolders.'
3. Copy the 'hidden' bief case to the desktop on your machine.
4. Create a new folder on the desktop
5. Open the 'hidden' brief case on your desktop and copy the contents to the new folder
6. Under the properties of the contents of the new folder untick the 'hidden' box and your files should be recovered.

I hope this works for other people like it worked for me. I did this on all of my brief cases and it worked each time.

Like I say, I don't know if all the steps are strictly necesary but it worked for me.

I tried uninstalling the app but problem persists. I just want to make sure that I have completely uninstalled it before I chalk it up to a bug or some new incompatibly with my system. My comp was messed up so I decided to clean reinstall xp pro, my hard drive was split into 3 partition, C, E backup and L photos and bits, at the point of the install were you decide, delete our make partitions, I decided to delete L as it was not needed and clean install onto C, leaving E with my docs and data, the install went fine, when I looked at my drives in admin tools the C is marked boot and E system, I was going to delete E and make new partitions, but because it marked as system, can not delete it. How did I do this and is there away to put it all back onto C, without reformatting.

OK. This is complicated; please be patient. Some months ago my PC (Win7 Ultimate x64) suddenly came up with the dreaded "BOOTMGR CTRL+ALT+DEL to continue..." error message. No idea what caused this; the OS had been operating flawlessly for almost a year. Anyway, I tried using a "Windows 7 Recovery Disc" which I had burned from an .iso file downloaded ages ago. After several unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem with the Recovery Disc, I gave up in frustration and rebooted from the Win7 installation DVD. It of course told me there was an existing Win7 OS on the machine; did I wish to update/overwrite that or install a NEW copy of the OS? I chose "new copy" and installed it. This fixed the problem, of course. Once I was certain all was working (several days later), I used Win7's "BOOTMGR" utility to DELETE this second, unnecessary version of the OS. All still worked fine, but it "shrunk" drive D: and left an "UNUSED" area on the drive (according to the DISKMGR tool). I don't remember the drive letter the install routine created. Anyway, I could not "extend" D: or get back the wasted HD space no matter what I tried. Naturally, in the process I stupidly screwed up something and was back to the "BOOTMGR missing..." situation. Arrgghh!! I used another PC to search for help on the 'net, and found a lot of praise for a utility called "EasyBCD" (using "Ubunt... Read more

We've been having a LOT of difficulties with Vista on our laptops recently.  The bootup process goes relatively fast until it gets to the "please wait" screen just before CTRL-ALT-DEL would normally appear.   The laptops can sit here for 10 minutes or 10 hours.  No rhyme or reason.  Nothing in the event log says anything about what it is trying to do.  Everything seems normal except this LONG wait at "Please Wait..."After some experimenting, I determined that if I disable the "Network Location Awareness" service, everything works fine.   Better than fine actually... everything is faster than ever.  Boot up takes 45 seconds from power on to the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen. My question is, why all of a sudden is this an issue?  Why would NLA cause huge hangups and delays on boot?  By disabling it, it seems to be fixed, if not better than before.  If I leave this disabled, is it going to break anything else?   Minded, we are a school district.  We have a local network.  No internet acess unless through a proxy.  Relatively simple network setup.   2008 servers.  1 domain controller.Ideas?

Help! I've been trying for a few days to solve this, but MS and Google Searches haven't been able to help out at all.

On Windows 8 the Windows Store fails to start up on my wife's account. When you click on the app, you get the start screen for the windows store with the circle animation at the bottom, but that's it. It just stays on that screen, with the circle spinning around, and never goes any further.

It was that way on my account too. (Same computer.) Then on my login I ran wsreset.exe and it fixed the problem. But on my wife's login when I run wereset.exe, still the same problem -- wsreset.exe brings up the Windows Store start screen, then the start screen just sits there...

(Not really in order, especially since I've tried some of these a few times!)
1. Run wsreset.exe
2. Run sfc /scannow
3. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth [as administrator]
4. Open a PowerShell [as administrator] and run Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth
5. Download and run the Microsoft UI App troubleshooter
6. Run [as administrator] powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.xml

The most curious thing is that Windows Store works on my account but not my wife's account! The biggest difference is that she's running with a Windows Live ID and I'm just running with a local login. Don't know if that makes a difference...?

Please let me know wha... Read more
