Utility to track installations and changes in your system ???

Q: Utility to track installations and changes in your system ???

Why are companies so irresponsible and don't provide an uninstall option that removes all the garbage they install on your system?

Few minutes ago I was able to completely remove the Blackberry desktop software that I was no longer using and was bothering when copying files. But for that I had to spent hours using cleaners, disk search utilities and registry managers to get rid of every piece of trash.

Right now I have registry entries and drivers and garbage from Sierra Broadband aircard wireless modem that I'm no longer using but if I try to remove trashes all my network setting. And there I have to left all those drivers and registry keys bloating my system.

So, is there an utility that tracks every minute change on your system when you install a software so that you can uninstall software removing every piece of crap without damaging your system???

A: Utility to track installations and changes in your system ???

I don't know of anything that tracks changes for normal users, but if you need to remove a software completely then I suggest Revo Uninstaller. It's a very powerful uninstaller that can hunt down remnants and remove them effectively.

After long debate, I've decided to move into the 21st century and update my OS on several machines I've built over the years (P4s or Zeons all running Win2000 - moving to XP Pro... I know, I know ...)
Since these are used in business, I want to minimize downtime as much as possible. I'm planning a clean install and use a separate partition for all data and documents. A couple of questions:
1- Will I be able keep existing partitions but just clean off the C: drive during install? (I'm using OEM software)
2- Is there a simple utility that lists all your applications, non OS drivers, hardware installed, etc., so you can roundup all your disks and files before "pulling the trigger"? I know most of what is on each machine, but it would be great to have an exact list.
I know the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will take care of some of this, but I'd like to be completely ready before starting. I also tried to get into the 'Hardware Compatibility List" at MS, but I guess I'm too late... it's not available anymore.
Thanks for any ideas,
-Bill

hi, after i completed windows setup & other drivers i checked that i had DirectX 11. then i installed a program requiring DirectX 10. i thought it would skip DirectX 10 install but it proceeded anyway, and i am sure it wrote to my disk. when i checked dxdiag, my version is still 11, but i am sure something was installed.

is it possible that 2 versions of files can exist on a system, and if so, is it possible for me to find the location and manually remove DirectX 10? and would u recommend this?

I was going to uninstall win pro sp3  and install win 8 until i had a lot posts about this on a topic which I sttarted on this forum. The majority of these posts were from people who have had bad experiences with win 8 so I have decided on win 7.

I've never installed a new operating system and I would like to know what I can do about all my current programs, of which there are a lot. I assume I can't just tranfer them to win 7 so I would be very grateful if someone could give me the procedure I should follow..My folders and files which are on one hard drive are also large - at present 230GB.

Any other advice which you consider appropriate would also be very welcome.

Joe, me again.  I'm going to watch your post.  I have an XP pro SP3 and feel there's not a lot going for it since it apparently can't be upgraded or changed or relied on after April 8, 2014.  Hopefully you'll find out a lot more for all of us.

Yesterday, my computer crashed. I tried to restart, but after the BIOS screen, it just goes black, and has a flashing '_' in the top left corner. So I put in the reinstallation CD to try to repair the computer. I do everything necessary to bring up the System Recovery tool, but in the box that lists the Operating System to repair, it doesn't list any. So I clicked on Load Drivers, as it instructs, to find the hard drive drivers, and I CAN SEE MY C DRIVE in the dialog box. I am able to browse it and everything (Windows, Program Files, My Documents, everything). So my computer recognizes the hard drive and everything, it just says that there is no OS installed. I can't run System Restore or anything. Does anybody have any ideas as to how to "find" the operating system? Could something have happened in the registry that I could go edit?

I have tried so many things through the command prompt, but nothing works.

A:No Operating System installations found

Have you run a disk check to recover bad sectors?

Use Advanced Boot Options to select Repair Your Computer and get to the System Recovery Options. Then select the command prompt. Do the following:chkdsk /r c:
chkdsk /r d:
chkdsk /r e:
chkdsk /r f:.etc until you get the message that the volume could not be opened for direct access. For any drives that do not give the message:
"Windows has checked the file system and found no problems"
run chkdsk again as above. In other words, if it says:
"Windows has made corrections to the file system"
after running the disk check, run the disk check again.

I realize you may only have one disk show up in Windows explorer, but you may have more than one disk through recovery options. This is because the system creates a hidden boot partition (which will be C: in recovery), you may have a recovery partition for your PC that is hidden (which will be D: in recovery), and you will have your primary Windows partition (which may be E: in recovery). A custom PC will likely have at least C: and D: to scan.

Also, is this a laptop or desktop computer?

I tried a Plug In called WMDCDTest V1.4 - no luck here. I've looked all over and can't find a plug in to give me song names.

I've got Windows 10 installed over Windows 7.

Thanks in Advance...

A:Windows Media Player, Burned CD's only give me "track 1, track 2, etc.

You don't say where the album you are trying to burn came from. If it's one you previously ripped from a commercially published CD, does Windows Media list the track names? Or does it say 'unknown album' and just have track numbers? For an 'unknown album' it may help if you first right-click on the unknown album and select 'Find album info'.

Hello!

I've been having problems with removing the MS Juan/Trojan.Vundo combination. I ran the free version of AVG anti-virus and it was able to remove several threats on my computer system. I also ran Malawarebyte's Anti-Malware and it was able to remove most of the problematic threats also.

But when I keep doing a scan using Malawarebytes' program, I keep seeing two of the same infected files.

I recently got infected with the Virtumonde malware. I found that it may have exploited one of the several unverified Java add-ons for IE that I have. I disabled these and ran several anti-spyware programs with no results. Eventually I found Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and this took care of all the threats, but 2 of them returned. Aafter some research I found that lots of people are having the same problem with MS Juan. I've tried every combination of safe boot, normal boot, deleting with Malwarebyte, manually deleting, changing permissions, and using a registry security program and nothing seems to keep these 2 registry keys from returning. For the last few days my computer has been overwhelmed with popups regarding security issues.

In the lower right taskbar where the time is located, a flashing X icon has appeared. Upon clicking it, I am directed to http://www.virprotect.com/?aff=1012 which looks pretty shady. There is also a yellow Icon that has appeared, and it directs me to a similar site.

Aside from that, I've been flooded with popups. An examples is "Critical System Warning! Your system is probably infected with the latest version of Spyware Cyborg-X."

I've tried to run Telus E-protect for virus and spyware scans, to no avail. After a short period of time I receive a message saying "Telus eProtect has encountered an error and must be restarted. Important: If you do not restart Telus eProtect, the services you have enabled will not be protecting your computer."

Occaisonally a pop up will appear as Microsoft Office, and try to install itself, or download something onto my computer. I'm not really sure, as I click cancel before it has a chance to do too much. All these problems are definately worrying me. Any help is appreciated.

Hello all:

I am having trouble getting rid of MS Juan and MS Track System permanently. I would delete the registry entries and a few minutes later, they would reappear.

I have the Vundo (virus?) earlier and I believe Malwarebytes took care of that, but I cannot seem to get rid of the MS Juan and MS Track System.

Thank you in advance for your assistance . My problem is I have a lot of popups when I use the internet.I'm not sure how I got these 2 infections, but I can't remove them. I have taken the following steps to try to fix:1) I deleted Internet Explorer and installed Mozilla.2) I downloaded Malware Bytes and ran it several times (both the quick and full scans). Each time it finds and removes the following but they show back up the next time I run it (sometimes back to back) it finds them again: Malware.Trace // Registry Key // HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS Juan Trojan.Vundo // Registry Key // HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS Track System3) I have downloaded AVG free and run it but it does not locate or remove the problem. Then I found this site. I've followed the steps on your site and have run DDS. I am pasting the DDS.txt log here, but the upload function will not allow me to upload the ATTACH.txt log file. I have a little project that I need to complete and am a bit unsure on how to do it. I am in need of some sort of tracking system for my network. Specifically, I want to track the number of connections to the wireless router. So basically just a system that will increment the total every time a device connects to the router. Ideally I am looking for something to show these totals in weekly, monthly, and yearly formats. I dont require any other data to be tracked, such as usage; however, it is not a big deal if the program or software used comes with this.

I already expect to replace the current networking hardware in order to do this, so I am not really limited in that regard. As long as the hardware reasonably priced. Best case scenario is there is some sort of firmware and software that can be setup to do what I want. If this is not possible I do have some experience with coding, so I could possible write something to do what Im looking for.

About a week ago, I started getting pop-ups. After exhaustive scans using Norton, Malwarebytes, and Super Antispyware, I was still left with MS Juan and MS Track System. The pop-ups are an annoyance and I occasionally get the dreaded Antivirus 2009 and Antivirus 360 pop-ups. About 4 days ago, I switched from Norton Antivirus to AVG. Now, no matter how many scans I run and no matter how many times I quarantine/remove the threats, they still come right back. I have tried to remove some of the files manually, but to no avail. My system periodically locks up. I can still see the desktop, but the mouse is frozen and the time and date are also frozen. I've tried swapping out the power supply, getting rid of extra hard drives, checking memory, reducing the size of memory, deactivating software that might be causing problems and were installed around the time the freezes started, but nothing works. Is there a way I can set up some sort of system log so I can look at what the system was doing when it locks up, to troubleshoot the problem? I know I should have done this first thing, but I thought I knew what was going on and eliminating the cause seemed like the way to go. But I don't know the cause, and need some help finding it.

A:System locks up. Can I track with logging?

I installed the debugging tools, but have no idea how to initiate the logging process so that there's a *.dmp file to analyze in the event of a lock up. I assumed installing the debugging tools would do that, but it hasn't.

I have an HP laptop (HP g7-1320dx) that I am trying to put Windows 8 on. After installing and even in safe mode the CPU is pegged with system interrupts. 30-40% consistently. I have another HP laptop that I can use a donor so ... I swapped out the RAM, hard drive (spindle and SSD), the DVD drive, the wireless card, remove all USB devices, different power adapter, with and without battery, only batter with no power adapter. I also tried disabling (in device mgr) the sound, the web cam, anything I can disable that isn't necessary. All drivers are updated. I tried both HP's drivers and direct from manufacturer where I could (realtek, AMD). Rebuilt a few times.
There is one unknown device which I have not been able to track down a driver for. I don't think that would cause the issue though since the driver wouldn't be loaded.
Perhaps this isn't a driver issue and the system interrupts are from something else. But in my experience (I'm a sys admin) and from all my googling system interrupts = bad driver.
Anyone know a good way to track down what driver it is? It's obviously something I cannot swap out or disable.

A:How can I track down bad driver causing system interrupts?

Download and run the free Resplendence Latency Mon program. It may help in diagnosing what is causing the problem.
Resplendence Software - Advanced System Tools and Developer Components

No guarantee that it will help, but it is a start.

Hi, this is my first post here so apologies in advance if I don't provide the correct information. I was infected by malware first on around 12/15/08, and I have been having persistent problems since then. Today was a particularly bad day, and while I think I might have cleared most of it up I am still unable to rid my computer of MS Juan and MS Track System. As a side note, my Windows Defender has not been able to update its definitions lately, but I'm not sure if it's connected. I am including below a couple of the Malwarebytes' logs from 12/15 and today, 1/2. Can you tell me how bad this is, and if there is any way to stop these viruses from coming back?
Thanks...

Hey guys

Recently I appear to have gathered to my comp an irritating piece of spyware that CA has labelled Darksma.

It appears to like the registry settings MS Track System and MS Juan (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MS Juan...etc). The symptoms are:

Whenever I open IE7 (as in checking hotmail emails) a get an alert box with the standard spyware message telling me how my computer is infected with spyware and please download this new product to fix it... funnily enough the no option doesn't seem to work.

Also, a believe that the Darksma has attempted to download other viruses to the computer, twice I have gotten CA alerts saying that they've just deleted the Vundoo virus strand.

Well here's the HJT this log:

I've been having problems with viruses recently so this seemed like the logical place to go
I had two major infections of smitfraud and virtumonde

I think smitfraud is gone, but I'm pretty sure virtumonde is still there because when i run malwarebytes' anti malware i still get

Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS Juan (Malware.Trace) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS Track System (Trojan.Vundo) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

for my registry key infections
I've seen ALOT of people have this exact problem, but I am not sure if the methods I saw them fix it with will work for me

the problem on the computer is pop-ups every so often, usually only when i switch websites. If I stay at a site for a while, the pop-ups stop

I got the gadcom virus on my laptop, but after trying to remove it with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware in safe mode, with the system restore off, i still get problems. It removed most of the problems i think, but when I ran a scan with Malwarebytes again, the log file shows register keys infected

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MS Track System (Trojan.Vundo)

Malwarebytes log file says they are quarantined and deleted, but the problem persists even after reboot. what can i do?? please help. i also used norton antivirus, but it doesn't seem helpful.

Hi. I was alerted to a malware infection the other night by AVG and Zone Alarm as well as by the fraudulent ?scan your computer? pop ups and other IE pop ups (even though I use Firefox) and the fact that I couldn?t run Windows automatic updates.

Using Spybot and Malwarebytes Anit-malware (MBAM), I was able to reduce a big infection (including lots of Virtumonde/Vundo bugs and a few Smitfraud-C and MyWay.MyWebSearch bugs) and recover my access to Windows Updates. But two bugs remain, regenerating every time I reboot. They are:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MS JUAN (Malware.Trace)
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MS TRACK SYSTEM (Trojan.Vundo)

When I quarantine/remove these with MBAM, the next scan shows zero infections until I reboot. Then the same two registry key infections show up, just to disappear again until reboot? I?m doing this all in safe mode, and my wireless internet radio is disabled. Also, I?ve tried scanning with Trojan Remove, AVG, VundoFix, and Spybot again and they all reveal nothing. I also uninstalled Java and manually removed remaining files (though I can see there are still files remaining in regedit that I?m afraid to mess with). And I?ve been repeatedly running RegSeeker and cleaning stuff out of some temp folders (though I?m not sure which ones matter and whether I should delete all files including desktop.ini files, etc.).

I keep reading about HijackThis, Super Antispyware, and ComboFix, and haven?t t... Read more

Hi Acer2000...how are you?

it probably is related to the failed installation..try backing up the registry key then removing the entry. If something gets affected, you can always restore the key.

What my question is-are there any programs out there to help tweak performance. I am more of a hardware junky than I am into OC'ing. Just have no interest, and MHO is I know just enough about OC'ing to do something stupid.

I am mostly looking for any utilities that will in some way increase performance, or make it easier to tweak performance. I have always been a do-it-yourselfer, and I just feel my system is not performing to my liking, performance-wise.

I browsed the downloads section-but that won't tell me necessarily what is good and whats not. Basically, what are some tweak programs and utilities that the people of this forum recommend?

A:System Utility Tweakers and Such

While I'm not into overclocking, here are some programs I have used for general system performance. X-Setup works quite well, it is shareware, but you can get a demo at the link I provided. If you want a free program, try TuneXP. It works very well also. Bear in mind that all these programs bear a certain amount of risk, be sure and back up your registry before you start, in case somthing goes wrong.

And if you are like me and are really feeling brave, you can do a lot of what these programs do manually. A good place to look for manual tweaks is at TweakHound's site. Again if you go this route, remember to back up first, you won't be sorry.

My situation started a couple of days ago when I suddenly had these messages at startup which referred to files which could not be found. I used a combination of Autoruns, msconfig, and regedit...to track down and manually delete any/all references to these two files. My system now boots up normally .

So...I can't tell you what it was or how it happened but I can say that deleting any/all registry and file references took care of it on my system.

I don't think it was malware of any sort, but I'm no expert at determining such.

Hi Everyone,

Can you tell me if everything is okay here? I ask myself how can the Office Source Engine show stopped when it is checked?

Anyway, I would like to know how I can get rid of the STI Simulator which is an old entry that was left behind when I removed the software of my old webcam! Do you have an idea how I might be able to do so?

Thank you

A:System Configuration utility

Go into the Services and enable it

I think I provided you with this information in another thread

Quote:

OSE.EXE is part of Microsoft Office software.
OSE.EXE is the system service called OFFICE SOURCE ENGINE.
OFFICE SOURCE ENGINE is required for reinstal, or install an "on demand" feature in Microsoft Office 2000/2003.
Required for using Microsoft Office.

STI Simulator is going to have to be removed via the Registry

When I boot up in XP it is in selective startup and when I switch to normal startup I get all the programs I deleted in my start up system tray. This is like a seesaw, is there anyway I can select normal start up and delete the programs from my system tray at the same time, this is driving me crazy.
Another ? is when I was using ME there was a great password reminder program, does this exist in XP, If not is there any good programs other than Gator(YUCK), any suggestions much appreciated, thanks, Neesh

Hi All,
Not sure if I'm in the correct discussion but I made a disk image of my "C" drive using Windows 7 built-in utility onto another hard drive. My "C" drive is using 27.4GB of data but the Image size is only 12.9GB. Could I have done something wrong? I thought the image size would be at least as big as the used space on the "C" drive. I'm concerned that I didn't get all my programs, files and settings backed up correctly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks............Tom

P.S. I tried to do this last night using DVD's for backup but decided to abort after 9! Dvd's were burnt and it still was not completed.

Hi all, I just re-formatted my Hard drive and Now that I have everything up again, i was trying to connect to the internet, however the system isn't recognizing my Ethernet card. I don't have the disk anymore as I haven't had to do a format in about 5 years. Windows won't even add their own drivers for some reason.

I was looking for a utility that can go through all my Hardware and maybe tell me what the name of the Ethernet card is so I can download the drivers from the internet to this computers floppy drive then upload onto my comp.

Thanks for the help!

does anyone know if there is a way to hide or remove a program from the System configuration utility in the start-up box without shutting down the program. I want to keep a program running but don't want anyone to see what it is running. I have a keylogger running to keep an eye on what/who my kids are talking to, but there very smart and know how to shut it down from the System configuration start up. So please if anyone knows how i can accomplish this please help. Thank you.

A:System configuration utility help.

I believe you can't run this utility unless you are the ADMIN. Make USER accounts for the kids. They can't access MSCONFIG. But then, if they know the process name of the program, then Ctrl+Alt+Del may allow them to end it anyway. Might be a 3rd party software that can do what you want.

Hello, In my "msconfig" box there is an entry under win.ini called
[MCI Extensions.BAK] Could someone tell me what this is for as I would like to delete it if no use. It has been disabled for as long as I can remember. Many thanks.

A:System Configuration Utility

MCI has to do with communications devices and I believe multi-media as well.

since is has the ".BAK" that would give the impression that it was backed up brolly due to some system changes.

Uncheck it, reboot the system and test your functionality. *IF* things still work, you should be able to safely remove it.
Good Luck!

Hi,
The below message keeps showing up every time I start my computer. I checked to make sure the utility is set to normal mode, which it is, however it keep showing up.
"You have used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts.

The system configuration utility is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts.

Choose the normal startup mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changed made using the system configuration utility.

(box to tick) Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when windows start."
I booted in safe mode and used hijackthis to delete the below line, however once I reboot in normal mode it does not show, however the next time I start my pc it comes back.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /autoO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

I am running Windows XP Professional. When i get into the Startup menu within the System Configuration Utility i can see a number of Startup Items listed together with the Command and Location description for each Startup item. The location description is the same for each startup item - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run." However there are 3 boxes ticked under the Startup Item heading with no startup item details (blank), no details under the Command heading (blank) but under the Location heading it shows - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run."
Can anyone tell me why I would have details showing under the Location heading in three instances but nothing showing under the corresponding Startup Item and Command headings?

If I check the box will the changes be accepted? Will this message appear every time I start?

The changes have already been made. This is just a warning. As the label on the checkbox says, if checked it will not appear on next startup.

I'm anticipating putting a versatile machine together that will check and scan HDs, virus and malware removal and also serve as a remote access machine (remotely servicing other machines).

I will be using Win 7 pro as my OS. I will be using mutliple boot drives (i.e., one for scanning HDs and virus removal, a separate system HD for Remote Access usage).

I will need only to buy a cpu, mainboard and RAM. Reliability and function are priority, but so is budget. I have been Intel only for several years, but am not opposed to AMD if it meets all of my requirements.

The above said, I am hoping for recommendations for the cpu and mainboard.

Given that I will generally be using this machine for singular functions at any given time, I assume that Hyper-threading will not be important?

The parts I'm considering:

Gigabyte Intel H81 Motherboard

Intel Pentium G3220

or

Intel G3420

I have not used AMD for many years, so I'm not familiar with the possibilities and savings of today.

The above components would run me around $150. I don't want a "bare minimum" machine and am not opposed to spending more, but would like to spend as little as possible for what will easily meet my needs above. The one thing I don't want is slow scans and Remote Access lag (internet is 50/5mbps and should not be a bottleneck).

Thanks for any ideas.

A:Utility system on a budget

So in a nutshell you want a test machine that you can slip drives into or hook up to others etc etc?? I am only asking because you may be wanting to do something that I did and that is have a tester machine I can try out different programs and hardware etc on??

for that I just refurbished an older machine that I got for nothing it has a fairly decent CPU and even with DDR2 RAM but it does just about anything I ask of it.
You may be able to pick up one and do that with it.

But if you are like me and only have access to retail priced stuff then it is going to cost around $500 - out here at least I don't know where you are without going and looking and it does depend on the retail situation where you are and what quality you want to build into it.

You are not able to access or use it to alter or change anything. I hope this has addressed your concerns.

In XP Home I have some programs that open at bootup that I don't want anymore. I went into the System configuration utility program and clicked on the Startup tab. I unchecked quite a few of them and then rebooted and it worked, they don't appear at bootup anymore, but they are still in the Startup program in the system configuration utility program. I tried highlighting and then right clicking to click on delete but it gives no option to delete them. How can I get them out of the Starup folder?

I've done this twice and every time I uncheck unwanted items, apply and reboot it seems to reset itself and check everything again ? Does anyone know why this is happening?

I am trying to remove Norton Antivirus 2005 from Windows XP, but can not remove it from the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs option. The instructions I received from Norton recommends that I begin at Start, Run, enter "msconfig" and then proceed through the Systems Configuration Utility window by making sure that "ccApp" is checked. My problem is that I can't get the SCU window to stay open when I enter msconfig into the Run box. It only appears for a brief second.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi clw and welcome to BC

The fact that msconfig won't stay open is a classic sympton of spyware. When that happens you can't usually access regedit.exe from Run or your Internet Options from the Tools menu in IE.

Suggest you post a log in the HiJack This forum on this site after folllowing the instructions about posting a HiJack log at the top of the forum.

Is there a way to gauge a PC system's gaming ability?

Since video cards and add-on programs (Direct X, etc) are so fundamental to game play, if would be nice to have a utility that would give a yes or no on the question "Will this game work on my computer?"

Bottom line is I don't know if my PC is 3D, GL rendering or what anymore since video card evolution is non-stop. A utility program to scan the computer's capability would help.

That's actually built into Directx.

Go to Start, Run type in dxdiag and hit enter.

If that doesn't work, then do a search on your system for dxdiag and open it when you find it.
