PPT: "Part of File is Missing" Error Attempting to Open File

Q: PPT: "Part of File is Missing" Error Attempting to Open File

When i attempt to open a Microsoft Power Point file (.PPT), i receive the following error message:"Sorry, the file cannot be opened because part of the file is missing."
How to stop this error?

A: PPT: "Part of File is Missing" Error Attempting to Open File

It means the file is damaged or corrupt. Is it saved on a USB drive, or on the computer hard drive? if it's on a USB, then the file wasn't properly closed before the USB was removed. If it's saved to the hard drive, then the file is damaged.
You can try opening PowerPoint, then clicking on the file you want to open and dragging and dropping it into PowerPoint.

I was working on my ppt file and PPT stopped responding so I had to force quit. Since then I've been unable to open the file and I always get the message that part of the file is missing. I opened it in OpenOffice and was able to retrieve only 3 or 4 of the 60 slides. Does anyone have any advice? Please help! I've translated 60 pages and now I will have to redo the entire project and the deadline has already passed.

Thank you!

The suggestion to try and open the presentation in Open Office is a viable one. The trick is to open it and run through the entire show to make sure it is ok. Then save it to a different file name, don't just overwrite the existing file.

It means Windows does not think you have the authorization to open that file. Try right clicking on it and selecting Open as Administrator.

Pic related when I try to open IE 11 and only IE 11.
Run IE
After I select IE in the "How do you want to open this file?" menu , it brings up the view downloads. After I run the iexplorer.exe, I can use IE 11.
Also I've ran MBAM, adware cleaner, and windows defender. So I'm pretty sure it's not a virus.
Unchecking "Use this app for all .exe files" does nothing.
I tried forcing it into desktop mode which didn't help
I tried the other modes which didn't help either.

It's just kinda annoying. Can't find anything on google about it except one small forum with no answers.

A:How do you want to open this file? When attempting to run IE 11

I have recently encountered this issue as well, it is really disturbing...
I have no solution though I suspect the cause could be Citrio Browser, since it hijacked IE.
Did you install Citrio Browser before?

I am getting the "acrobat...has performed and Illegal operation and will be shut down" window. From reading kayak1's post, it appears that the problem was solved on their own. We have a WD800JB-00CRAI1 hard disk, partitoned into 4 primaries and 4 further logical partions, running under WinXP pro. The first 3 primaries contain separate installations of WinXP - we pretend we have 3 separate computers for 3 people.

Question: My son has a 30 GB data partition on the drive. He deleted several large files (burning images and such) and expected to see about 7.5 GB free space. Instead, he got 500MB free space and about 7. GB disappeared.

Win XP reserves a max of 3.6 GB for restoral acc to the control panel. He couldn't find the missing space in Norton Utilities, either, ie the space was occupied, but no files were listed.

Western Digitals "Data Lifeguard" returns that the hard disk has no errors. We wiped the partition with Norton Wipe Info. Now the 30 GB partion shows a 29.3 GB capacity and 3.43 GB used, but no files are to be seen. Norton shows 24.7 KB worth of Recycler and System Volume informatin, but no info on the rest of the 3.43 GB. We reduced the Norton Unerase Protection to 600 Mb on that partiton, but there was no change in the 3.43 used. With the NTFS file system we shouldn't have cluster waste. So what gives? Any ideas?

Thanks.

A:Missing HD space on 30GB part. a) 3.43 dGB when drive empty, b) 7 GB after file delet

Recently I decided to try teaching myself how to program in Python via a book called ThinkPython. In one of the chapters, the author instructed me to install a package he created called Swampy with numerous modules inside, writing out a link to follow where I could install Swampy on the official Python website. When I did though, I needed to have a software that I could use to open it. First off I chose NotePad but it opened NotePad with some text I couldn't understand, so then I tried MS Paint to open it.

Unfortunately, as one person described it to me, it seems as if I set the default file association for executable files to Paint, so now any exe I'd attempt to run will open it with Paint, which doesn't work for most applications because when I do, I get the following error.

This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported."

So applications like Google Chrome, Steam, Paint, Calculator and Python won't open for me by clicking on them, however ones like NotePad, Recycle Bin and my games will. I can at least open Steam indirectly by clicking on a game, and then type a link in a message I'd send to a friend over Steam, which can then send me to Chrome by clicking on my own lint, so I guess they aren't entirely blocked from use.

I was told that I'd need to use regedit to either import a registry backup or edit the registry keys for exe files back to their defaults. But after looking through about a do... Read more

A:Using MBSA 2.2 getting error 'Cannot load security CAB file" when attempting to scan any remote systems

Thank you for sending this to the MBSA forums!
If you haven't already, you may want to check the MBSA FAQ located here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/cc184922 specifically under the sections titled, "How can I scan a computer that is protected by a firewall" (to resolve potential DCOM connectivity issues), and "When attempting to scan a remote machine,
why do I see the error 'Cannot deploy security metadata?"
This is also a very misleading error message since the problem could be due to connectivity to the target (client) machines - nothing relating to the CAB file.  In any circumstance, you should not need to install MBSA on all of the target machines to
successfully assess their security state.

Possible solutions include

Confirm the latest WUA client is installed on all target machines (with the files you've already placed in the cache directory, you can simply check the scan option to "Configure computers for Microsoft
Update and scanning prerequisites" - which will update and re-register each target machine with the latest WUA client and the ability to respond to requests from MBSA.
Check whether the target machines have limited disk space (unlikely) Check DCOM settings on both the server - but more likely due to the failure to remotely scan - the target machines.
Change the scan options to further troubleshoot.  Specifically, 'Check for security updates' option uses a DCOM connection ... Read more

It's doubtful those files are missing. More likely a bug still present in HijackThis where it cannot correctly enumerate some entries, so it gives a (file missing).

I would not put any faith in online analyzers such as that one. Much better to use these online databases

There's nothing wrong with any of those entries. Please leave them alone.

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

I have been trying to setup a postscript printer on port "File:" so I can print anything from a webpage to a file for running through Acrobat 8 Distiller. When I first install the print to file, it works fine until I reboot the computer. Every time I print to this printer after the reboot, I get a pop-up box titled "Local Port" with the message "Cannot Print to File: Access Denied". I gather it is a permission problem of some sort as I can log onto the Administrator user-id and it prints to file fine. Any ideas on what permissions I need to set this printer to in order for it to work under a standard user-id?

Using Windows Vista Ultimate X64.

Thanks

I have given up finding a solution to the problem. I no longer use Adobe Acrobat Professional full as I have tried both updates 8.0.1 & 8.0.2 to no avail, and is now unsupported as Adobe is up to version 9 of this software. I have opted for a freeware solution, so I have uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Professional and installed the freeware CUTEPDF Writer at www.cutepdf.com. It works beautifully on Vista X64 on all documents, including Microsoft Word and Scanned Images and Photos. I'm very happy with the results.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I saw your post right after you made it but I did not post a reply because:
1) Real life got in the way
2) I'm not sure that I understand your issue.
I'm not picking at your English, but this is important:

I'm guessing that you meant:

Lets get strait to the point here, i must have downloaded something bad, or at least it looked good and there was something hidden.

When i extracted said file from a .rar my antivirus AVG gave me warnings, for what i cant remember, but i think it was for a trojan, i pressed move to vault, but i dont know if it got it.

I then got a windows antivirus message saying to scan my computer, i instantly knew it was spyware, so i looked up how to remove it and thought i did, i then ended all the processes it was using and deleted all the files it installed..

i got scared and decided to run AVG to scan the whole computer, 2 hours later, i had a few viruses, moved or healed them, not too sure.

i turned of my computer. when i turned it back on i now have Missing file rundll32.exe and i cannot open any .Exe files..

Now im scared and i cant loose alot of data.

Is there any solution to my problems??

Hi,

On my laptop I have an SD card slot. Whenever an SD card is in, a removable storage device shows up in "Computer" in Explorer. When I open up "Computer" through the start menu, the icon for the drive as expected (the standard SD card icon), but if I navigate to "Computer" in a File Open dialog (e.g. in Firefox, File->Open File...), the icon is missing. The drive is there, but the icon is one of those generic missing-icon icons. I've attached a screen shot.

This is a relatively new build (Vista Business x64), and I've noticed it from day one.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

Any thoughts on this?

I've deleted my icon cache, and there was no change.

I've also tried to change the icon for a drive using the registry, as explained in a few tutorials and posts on this site, and that hasn't worked either. In fact, I can't even change the icon that appears in "My Computer" for the SD Card drive, let alone in the File Open Dialog.

For completeness, attached is the proper icon being displayed in My Computer.

Hi,

My PC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes.

On my Dell Inspiron, there are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives' icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.

I'm running Vista x64 Home Premium.

Has anyone else encounter this problem? Does anyone have a solution for fixing these missing icons?

Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to say that this seems like a swell enough forum as is and I am frankly out of ideas. About a year ago I had backed up a rather large series of files under one name for my roommate who was in the process of doing some "spring cleaning" on his computer. Fast forward to now and he is out of Hard-drive space damn near and has been unable to find the reserve file himself. Below is the directory under which I named and saved the around 200gb file of games and old-ROTC documents. Regardless the file needs to be found and even after un-hiding all files from the control panel, I have yet been able to locate it. It would seem to be simple enough, one would think that you could see the file name sitting above Program Files but it is not. Any one have any ideas, we would rather not have to reformat/ system restore if we can avoid it.

C:\common_ORIGINAL NEW FAGS

A:File path error/ Cannot find file directory/file itself

I used a software called TreeSize which shows the size of all folders on the disk. Thinking that the Windows OS is around 18gb, a 200gb files should really stick out with TreeSize.

Hello

I have encountered the same problem lately. I am attempting to run the installation file for Gobby(from Gobby). When I attempt to run it I can see it in the task manager, but the installer itself doesn't start. The problem is also present when I attempt to start VLC media player.

What can I do to solve this?

I downloaded a somewhat large file (around 350 MB) and went to open the .exe file. However, once the extract window bar finished running left to right, I got a popup error message saying "Not enough storage is available to process this command."

I have plenty of storage space on the computer (~50 GB), so I don't know what the issue is. I rebooted just to be sure, and it didn't help. Also, the disk quotas are disabled on both my C: and D: drives.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

when trying to start some games, 'wav file open error' comes up and everything freezes. must reboot.

A:wav file open error

Hiya

Is it with all games or just a few? If its a few, can you list them? Also, what version of Windows are you running?

What it may be is a corrupt .wav file. Go to Control Panel | Sounds.

If you look at the box that appears, next to a few of the Events are volume icons. Look for your game that is causing the error, and test some of the .wav's. Click on one, and press the Play button. Keep trying until the error comes up again. If it does/doesn't, let us know what happens.

I had installed a Scrapbook Software Program I purchased comercially onto my HP Pavillion zt1130 notebook {Windows XP} and it loaded and ran fine.
Then I used a thumb drive wireless networking adapter{Netgear} to access our LAN dsl, which it did witout problems and the connection worked great.
After using the Scrapbook program and also surfing the Web a bit, I decided to do a little computer maintenance and ran the defragment tool that came with Windows XP. It was late, I fell asleep, and the computer went into 'Hibernation' mode after a while. When I awoke {sleepy} a few hours later I noticed the computer was still on, attempted to turn it off but since it was hibernating it would not respond to my usual commands ; I had forgotten how to bring the computer out of hibernation, so I used the 'paperclip' reset button on the back of the notebook to turn the machine off.
The next morning I attempted to turn on and use the notebook, and this is what happened :
The computer powered up
The HP logo appeared quickly
Before the Windows logo appeared I observed.the following error report on a black screen:
<Windows root> system 32\hall.dll file missing or corrupted. Please install a copy of the above file.
I do not have access to the start, programs, or any other menu to begin searching for the file.
I am not familiar with how to configiure the notebook to boot from a CD.
I do not know how to change the Bios settings, or which Safe Mode selection to use.

I'm running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600, and when I recently ran my Norton WinDoctor, I got a couple of problems - which WinDoctor was able to fix all by itself.

I also got one that requires a manual fix. The diagnostic reports that:

"CLSID\{1171A62F-05D2-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}\InprocServer32," refers to a missing file, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash8b.ocx."

I've located this entry in my registry, but I'm unclear as to whether I should delete the CLSID entry or the indicated Default, which references the Data "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash8b.ocx."

I suspect this is an "orphan" registry reference, and that the minor fix is within reach - but which entry in the registry to delete?

Recently, when booting up, I have been getting 2 error messages (both appear twice). They refer to files not found or missing but I cannot begin to identify the files - all that I see are a series of little squares: 7 in a row, then a space, then 14 more. I click on OK and away they go and everything else seems to procede normally. I have a Dell Dimension, Windows XP Home. A call to Dell was not encouraging - they recommended re-installing the system. Oh dear. I have Norton Firewall and Anti-Virus, Microsoft's new Anti-Spy, WinPatrol, AdAware and Spybot. I am FAIRLY confident that my system is clean, but then, who knows? I have run registry checks and let them do their business (I don't fool around with the registry on my own, I am not a trouble-maker). If I need to re-install, I will work up the courage to do so, but until then...maybe someone here has had some experience with these error messages. At least I would learn something new. For now, my system SEEMS to be working OK, but what do I know. This could be a harbinger of worse things to come.

I am running XP media edition on my home laptop (acer aspire). On booting up I get as far as the wallpaper screen then the error message wininet.dll file is missing together with a recomendation to restore the file appears. The laptop then stays on that screen. I am not able to go any further or access any files or programes.

Using the safe mode with cmd promt I have tried the following all with no success: I have tried to copy a clean version of this file using both the copy and expand command. I have tried to rename the file and to delete the file. None of these have worked. I Also get when attempting these is a cyclic redundancy check error message.

I dont know what to do next. I have no discs as Xp came pre installed with the laptop. The acer recovery stuff is no longer there following a total rebuild 18 months ago. I am not able to get on the internet. I can not run any virus software.

What should I do next? I have spent hours and hours trying to reslove this.

A:Wininet.dll file missing error

Welcome to TSG!

If you don't have any XP CD, where are you copying/expanding the wininit.dll file from?
The CRC error indicates the file you are trying to copy is corrupted.

Have you tried copying the backup copy from Windows\System32\dllcache to Windows\System32?
Or copy the file from anopther WinXP system using a floppy, Flash drive, or CD.
You could also try running System Restore:
How to start the System Restore tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP

It could be the file was deleted by your AV/AS software as it was infected, so running a scan once you get the file restored would be a good idea.

Hi Folks -

I am having a problem with a new Dell Inspiron 15 3520 that came with Windows 8 installed and that I had been using for only a month when it went bad. I had tried to repair it as best I could, but, at this point, the problem seems to be beyond my capacities to deal with or understand, and I am seeking help.

The problems started when I turned it off about ten days ago, and went I turned it back on a couple days later, and it was stuck in the apparently famous Win8 "Automatic repair couldn't repair your pc"/BSOD loop. I was not able to boot into safe mode. System restores made no difference. Somewhere along the line I found something that said that I had an "inaccessible_boot_device error".

From the repair menu maze, I was able to get to a command prompt. I used this to copy almost all of my files off of computer.

Chkdsk showed no bad sectors, no bad partition records, or other irregularities. sfc returned "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". Some test (I do not remember which) showed that the boot record and BCD were fine. The Dell hardware diagnostic test showed everything working fine.

I am thinking that it is possible that the source of this was a virus or mechanical problem (I saw no evidence for either). If I had to guess, however, I would imagine that the computer stopped working after an automatic update pushed a corrupted/incompatible driver. I have seen discussions online abo... Read more

Hi.

Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit
Intel i5 CPU @2.67 GHz
8 GB RAM

This problem just started recently or I only noticed it in the past week or so. When I'm in any application that launches the File Open dialog, including any browser's "Select File/Browse" button to choose a local file, when I select a file (even a small 1K file) from the dialog and the dialog closes, there is a 5 - 10 second delay before the app responds and either opens the file or in the case of a browser, displays the file name. In those 5-10 seconds, the app is non-responsive. In a browser, other fields on the form cannot be clicked or selected for the 5-10 second period -- then the selected filename appears on the form.

This happens in all 4 browsers I tried: Chrome 32, IE 11, Firefox 26, and Safari.

I also booted Windows in safe mode and the problem still occurred.

I also ran KingSoft Office Writer and selected File->Open and the same issue occurs after selecting the file -- there is a noticeable delay that wasn't previously there.

In a code editor (PSPad), opening a file does the same thing as well (hangs for several seconds after selecting the file).

Randomly during testing, (but probably < ~5% of the time) it doesn't delay and works properly.

I ran System File Checker and MS Security Essentials, but both turned up a clean machine.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this lately?

Thanks,
Vinnie

Hello world. I have an important problem. I can't open, use or even preview files that the name of those files are colored in green. (like this)First, I would serve a chronology:- Before I reformatted my computer to windows Vista Starter SP1, I am using Windows XP Pro SP3.- Back when my Operating System is Windows XP Pro SP3, my hard drive is partitioned into two (C:/ and D:/).- I put some files (pictures, documents, apps) on one of the drives (D:/).- I tweaked the folder of the files' properties(security tab) and applied some changes in its security/sharing etc. It made a process like "applying the setting" which after that, - The name of the files and folders/subfolders turned into green!(like this)- I did this because there are multiple users on my computer(cousins) and I don't want them to mess up with my files.- I didn't see anything wrong in doing that I supposed, so I just left those files to stay that way (like this) ---- this part is the problem part ----- I finally decided to upgrade to Windows Vista Starter SP1 operating system. I installed it in the C:/ partition of my hard drive.- The files in the other partition (D:/) stayed there untouched.- I tried to insert a picture in a document, that "picture" would be a file that I am talking about a while ago, the file in drive (D:/) which its name is like this- Unfortunately, it said something like: "WORD CAN'T OPEN FILE: FILE PERMISSIONS NOT ALLOWED"- I was astonished! Hello and this is my First Post

Can you help me with an annoying dialog that pops up when running shortcuts please?

I have (portable) applications located on E:

I can run those applications directly from E: without a problem - i.e. I don't get any warnings.

However if I create a shortcut to one of these applications and place the shortcut on the desktop ( on C: ), then running the shortcut causes an open file security warning (see attachment). The warning dialog claims it can't determine who created the file, because it comes from "a location outside your local network". Which is really strange because it is a locally installed hard drive.

The only explanation I have is I've used E: with a previous windows 7 installation on the same hardware, then I reformatted & reinstalled my Windows 7 partition, but kept E: untouched.

Couple of things I've tried are:
1) there is no "Unblock" button on the shortcut's properties dialog
2) Group policy editor changed to not preserve zone information
3) I couldn't find an exact match for this particular open file security warning when searching here and other forums

I'm using Windows 8.0

The task should be simple. I don't want to be so engrossed in my work on my computer as to miss picking up my daughter from the school bus. (Phone alarms have let me down in the past with dead bat issues etc.) So I thought I'd simply use the task scheduler

However, each time the program is run (which is simply C:/alarm.jpg - I even placed it back in root C in an effort to solve the problem - to no avail) It just brings up a "How do you want to open this file?"

Yes I know what you might say - that's a good enough alarm anyway - but that's not the point. I had originally used an mp3 file so the music would play loud (that way even if I'm at the loo or on the phone I would hear it) but I scrapped that and because
it too failed to load and I tried using the picture file instead, thinking surely IT would have no problem loading Windows Photo viewer!!!

When the dialogue opens up ad asks "How do you want to open this file?"
It already has listed at the top the very first option "CONTINUE USING WINDOWS PHOTO VIEWER" so it KNOWS that is the default program  - so why on earth is it asking????

I had the same problem with a music file despite the fact that the default MP3 player is VLC media player.

Hi,
As soon as my laptop (acer aspire 5750) starts up, hundreds of windows pops up saying 'windows can't open this file' and i have checked most of those windows. some of the file types that cannot be open are .URU, .AQD, .RNA, .CYO, .GGW etc. Literally there are hundreds of these error windows. I do not have access to a Windows Install disc, or a Boot CD

A:(HELP) when i start my pc its show missing file error?

Hello Yogesh, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since this only happens at startup, you might check to see if it's listed in your startup programs. If so, then you could just disable or delete it from the startup programs to no longer get the error.

If not, then you could troubleshoot by performing a clean startup to see if that may help ID the cause.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

I am working on a Toshiba laptop, OS win 7 Home 32bit. It was working fine and he went to turn it on. It boots but the desktop doesn't come up in normal or safe modes. It just flashes "Windows Explorer error, this program can't start because shell32.dll is missing from your computer". He can't even get in to backup his files if the partition has to be whipped. I have the same OS in my laptop to beable to copy the shell32.dll file to the other laptop. All my attempt's to make a boot cd that will allow windows basic setup to boot off the cd so I can copy the needed file to the hard drive. have failed. I d/l win7 boot-32bit.bft and tried to make a bootable cd using Winiso but the prog won't see the bft file. I am down to my last option. Whipping the partition and reinstalling Windows clean. But he will lose all his files if I do that.

A few days ago I was online and the computer froze. I turned it off manually by holding down the power button, and when I went to reboot it, I got an error that said windows couldn't start because:

WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM is missing or corrupt

I have a Toshiba laptop & am running XP home edition. I did NOT hae an external hard drive for backup until yesterday, therefore I don't just wanna insert the recovery disk and wipe my hard drive.

SO. I'm looking for either a way to get the PC up into safe mode so I can move files onto my external, or a way to fix it without loading the recovery disk and clearing all my files, music, ect.

I am trying to burn Blank dvds under my Roxio Easy Burning software. And my Hp keeps coming up an message says "Video_TS File Missing or not found". I just brought this laptop in early feburary of this year. I can burn blank CDs. Please help! I don't know if its the driver update or the optical drive it self.

A:Video_TS file missing Error message.

Not too familiar, but from what I've read you'd need to convert that mass of "TS" goodness into a single file that's more recognizable. These three links explain the process in different ways: 1, 2, and 3.

If not, you might have to find some specific option regarding that format.

Hi,

I was in need of some help with my NTLD file error on my windows XP computer. I wanted to do the following below. The problem is step 5. I forgot my Admin password. How can I fix this problem ? Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.

6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy ntdetect.com c:\

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Last night my girlfriend?s pc had a problem while booting. She had her computer on sleep mode and carried her notebook in her bag. When she opened her screen the computer was already on with a black screen and error message "missing or corrupt c_437.nls". She managed to load windows and upon shutting down the computer froze. She left it for 20 minutes and again it tried to reboot and the same original error message appeared. She took out the battery and tried to restart. No luck.

I rebooted with an original oem windows xp cd and arrived at the recovery console. At the recover console I tried to expand the c_437.nl_ file by using the following command:

c:\>expand e:\i386\c_437.nl_ c:\windows\system32\c_437.nls

Hard drive is partitioned into c and d. I?m able to go into d and backup working files but I?m not able to view any files on c. It?s showing as O bytes.

The CD rom is the e drive.

I want to:
1. Restore windows and access files on c drive
2. Repair the corrupt file on c drive and regain full access to windows

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. I've spent many frustrating hours trying to figure this out.

I have a Dell Inspiron M5030, Windows 7, 64-bit OS. Three days ago my computer blue screened but I couldn't catch the error message before it shut down. It seemed to work fine after that so I'm not sure if it's connected to the current issue. Two days ago I started getting error messages when using Yahoo and AOL instant messengers - "CLayoutHostWnd-Tooltip: YahooMessenger.exe - System Error    The program can't start because api-ms-win-downlevel-shell32-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." I did try to uninstall Yahoo but got the message "An error occured when trying to remove Yahoo Messenger. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove Yahoo Messenger from the Programs and Features list?" I clicked Yes but it wasn't removed and the same thing happens when I try to uninstall any program. I get a different error message when trying to run my webcam - "The program can't start because AVICAP32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." After a while, I couldn't hear the sound in videos online and the videos restart themselves and now music files won't play with Windows Media Player and I get the message "Server execution failed."

My old XP "Home Edition" computer can't boot up.

I get this error
"c:\windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt."

And it never came with a bootable XP CD.

But I discovered later on that I can use something called
"Puppy Linux CD" to access my old files.

The good news is that I can access my hardrive using
"Puppy Linux CD" without any problems.

I think it was a virus/trojan of somesort that caused my windows from starting.

But I created this topic so that someone could actually help
me to MANUALLY recover certain files, like certain stored files in some directory, in order to restore windows.
Because, like I said, I don't have a cd. And I really miss my XP!

I also have plenty of blank CDs to burn and a 900GB USB hardrive that I could use.
Appreciate it!!!

A:XP won't Start up due to "missing or corrupted file" error and I don't Have a CD, either!

If the corrupted files were from a rootkit i highly recommend that you just copy your desired files over to another pen / burning a CD from the live distribution and re-install Windows from scratch.

A Windows XP cd you could borrow from a friend-friend or something similiar just hear around since you can't even start and we dont know what's in the system right now.

Every sys file you replace will be corrupted again if there is more files that are infected so most likely this is the end of your current partition

I wanted to edit the Hosts file to add something to it. I opened notepad++ and navigated to where it was and I couldn't see the etc directory in windows/system32/drivers/ with the file open in notepad++. I navigate in explorer and right click on hosts and edit with notepad++ and that works fine. Now I can navigate with windows notepad just fine. I asked a friend to try and it can see it fine and open it in notepad++. This is frustrating. I add some sites to it to block adware and spyware. I know my security suite can do this but I still double protect myself

I did do group policy edites like on this forum Tired of UAC & Security Prompts? Tell Windows that you're the admin! - Windows 8 General Discussion - Help and Discussion and here Tutorial: How to make Windows 8 understand you ARE the Administrator

I just would like to know why he can and I can't? I have turned uac off completely and did those 2 group policy edits. That is all I did.

Now I am not the greatest with all this stuff. I google what I need to figure out and then follow those steps.

I read a number of forum suggestions and do not appreciate them. I have been able to remove the error and open the C: & D: using regedit and finsing the word resycled and erasing the registry. This is effective only for the period of the open session. When I logout and login it returns.
