Internet cutting out on multiple devices.

Q: Internet cutting out on multiple devices.

I've read through a could of threads but have yet to find any answers for my problem. Basically my internet runs fine when a device is directly connected to my modem. However, when running through a router I get 2-10 second disconnects at random intervals on all devices hooked up to the router, be it wired or wireless. I've already tired three different router, all different brands, among other various things like updating/switch firmware and changing the router over to a new wall socket with no luck. I had my service provider come out and switch the modem, but that didn't help any. Any help would be appreciated.

A: Internet cutting out on multiple devices.

what cable is between the router and modem - has this been changed ?
you mention "wall socket"
As you have made a lot of changes to the modem and to the router(s) - i can only think of cable

Before making each connection , do a powercycle - see how below

connect with a small cable between the modem and PC - and that works fine
then with a 2nd cable - do the same
now you have two cables that you know work on the modem
Also while in that configuration post an ipconfig /all - see how below

then using the same cables - connect from the modem to the router
and using the known cable connect the PC to the router
Now test again and see if this time it works
ipconfig /all

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the information above those entries

For Windows 8 or Windows 10
To open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop.
Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.
For windows version, XP, Vista, W7
Hold the Windows key and press R

Now type CMD

Now press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):
In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt
It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router

Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes. We have found in some instances you need to wait at least 15 minutes
Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Next switch on the router (if a separate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

Hi there.
I am using my phones 3G to type this and it's a real nuisance since I cannot research information for essays and other important aspects that I need when studying for my A levels.

Anyway, it started last night around 11pm, everything died and I thought it was because of the bad weather.
I woke up to sunshine however the internet was still not working.

The router is a SuperHub 2 and it had no problems up till now, the lights for 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz are flashing and so are the other lights on the router - this the router is working.

The problem is the connectivity, I use my laptop, iPhone and computer all together when studying and playing games. All of which has the same problem. All have the 5 bars connectivity however they all say "no internet access" and no response from the DNS servers.

What is the problem then?

What I've done:
- I have release and renewed the IPs
- reset router numerous times
- turned on: off router numerous times
- fiddled with wires to make sure they're plugged in.
- turned on and off computers and laptops.
- set IvP4 to automatic.
- waited hours.
- went onto the Virgin Media router page via 192.168.0.X. Then I started the router up in factory status, starting I up a few times.

How do I fix this nuisance? I need the internet now, for work purposes.
Please help, since it's affecting me and my family members and all of our devices.

A:No internet access on multiple devices

Does the Virgin Media router page give you a status of the WAN?

We had a bad storm last week and it took a few days after power was restored for Comcast to repair their lines.

I was able to get to my router, but the WAN address was - can't get there from here!

If you have a WAN address, turn everything off (no power) then
power up your cable modem, wait a few minutes for it to cycle through what it cycles through
power up your router (if seperate) wait for it to cycle through what it cycles through
finally power up your machine and check the network status on the Virgin Media router

If you don't have a WAN address, report the outage to your provider. They probably already know about your area, but a call never hurts.

I recently posted on this forum because my PC had been cutting out every time I plugged in a USB device. I have changed the psu, underclocked the processor and ram and flashed the BIOS but nothing makes any difference. Do you people reckon it is a dodgy motherboard or something else because I need to know whether to send it back to the guy I bought it from on ebay.

edit: It does it when I plug in stuff to the audio ports too.

Hi guys,

Our ISP has recently changed our router from Prolink H6300G to Prolink H5004N.
Our Prolink H5004N is wired to the phone line.
All devices connect to the internet via WLAN.
No devices are attached to the router via LAN.

The unusual problem is, some wireless devices connect to the internet just fine, others connect intermittently.
Below are the list of devices:

ASUS Notebook PCs x 2 (connect)
MSI Notebook PC (connect)
Apple iPad2 (connect)
LG LED SmartTV (connect)
Sony PlayStation 3 Slim (connect)
RedFox Netbook (intermittent)
Samsung Tablet PC (intermittent)
Sony XPERIA Smartphones x 3 (intermittent)

It is not that the red devices could not connect, they do so, but a very irregular and on/off internet connection.

I am stumped by the variety of devices that constantly connect and those that do not.

Does changing from G to N may in any way cause this?

A:Unusual Wireless Internet Problem with Multiple Devices

All devices you listed are connected WIRELESS to the same Prolink H5004N?

Try to move these devices closer to the wireless Access Point (built in router). Just for a test
RedFox Netbook (intermittent)
Samsung Tablet PC (intermittent)
Sony XPERIA Smartphones x 3 (intermittent)

Does that fix anything?

Last week or so, we had a storm, and devices got unplugged. Internet service was out briefly. Wireless internet came back shortly after, but my desktop and our PS4 both can't connect to the internet via ethernet, and I can't figure out why. I've done the usual stuff: power cycle, tried out other ethernet cords, etc. Comcast has said that it's not on their end, and our wireless signal is fine, so we're clearly getting signal through the modem and out through the router. My desktop is plugged into a different modem, but also won't connect to the one attached to the router. A hard reset of the modem didn't help, whether through the button or through the configuration settings. My desktop is claiming that there's no ethernet cable plugged in, though there definitely is. I'd suspect a broken port if the PS4 weren't having the same issue. I've tried a few things on the desktop, including installing the most recent drivers for the network adapter, rolling back the driver, disabling/renabling, and just deleting it and let it reinstall one on restart, and trying to reset the IP stack. I'm posting links to screenshots of some of the command prompt commands I've tried, and the results. They vary a little bit, I've gone into the registry to enable some permissions after access was denied. Any ideas you can send my way are greatly appreciated.

As it says on the tin really! I am an absolute non technically minded person so have no idea how to even start trying to fix this problem. A few weeks ago our router quite happily let multiple devices attach wirelessly to the internet at once but in the last couple of weeks it has started only allowing one device at a time to connect to the internet. If say my partners work laptop is connected then our home laptop/iPad can see the wireless router but it will not allow them to connect to the internet anymore. Can anyone help me to try and sort this please...I can use my computer for basic things but am in no way technically minded so please be very clear and simple with any help you are able to give.

A:Devices and Printers - devices being displayed multiple times

Looks like Ghosts of DLNA devices. Start by taking offline any DLNA capable gear, reboot the Gateway and also clear its IP Table.

Also clear out those ghosts from Devices and Printers.

For some reason this started in Windows 7, when Microsoft started to play games with DLNA and media Shares.

I consider myself an advanced user, but this one I've never seen, nor can I find info out for...

I haven't been able to plug a video camera or external hard drive into my computer via FireWire. I then tried a different cable, nothing. I then tried a different device and cable, nothing. I then tried a different computer with two devices, nothing.

My USB2.0 works fine with each device and computer. I also took the new computer into CompUSA and they tried their firewire device and all worked. I bought a new firewire cable, but I have the same luck with each device.

How can 2 external hardrives, and one sony camera not work, after working for a year. What happened? What do I need to do?

There are multiple websites that I cannot connect to, facebook, rottentomatoes, youtube, to name a few. Others seem perfectly fine. A few seem okay, but seem to be running slowly.

This is the case for both my computer (on which I am running Windows 7), which is connected directly to the router, *and* mobile devices which are connected wirelessly.

On my computer I have tried using several different browsers to no avail, but when I used the TOR browser to proxy, I was able to access them.

I apologize if this has been asked, but I haven't been able to find anything this specific.

Thank you.

Our ISP recently updated their hard ware to work with the Sprint network. Note: our ISP is not Sprint, but the local phone company.

Our Hardware:
Internet: DSL 10.0 (highest speed available)
Modem: Comtrend (ISP provides)
Router: Belkin N
Computer: 10 yr old Dell running XP - service pac3 - wired connection
Kindle Fire (first edition, no HD, etc) - wireless connection
Xbox 360 - wireless connection

Xbox - went from constantly bumped from Xbox Live game by losing internet connection to not being able to enter a game at all
Kindle - went from occasional "network error' message during online tasks to having to restart download (multiple times) or refresh page for most any or all online tasks
Computer - have to click refresh to get most any page to load after the home page

What we've tried so far:
I have recently cleared the cache on both the computer and Kindle. XBox's new security measures have been met.

My questions:
Do any or all of these issues seem to be related?
Is there a piece of equipment or something we may be missing to make all of these things work? I am a networking novice.
Who should I call to get these issues corrected, my ISP or a tech service? Note: if I start with the ISP and they do not find an issue I have to pay for the call.

A:Multiple issues over multiple devices

First. You should try to NOT use a wireless connection for any type of gaming: PC, Mac, Console, etc. If you can hard wire the xbox you'll be waaay better off than using wireless.

Now... Yes, the issues could be related - there maybe an issue with the Belkin N router. I'd try to first reset the Belkin router to default settings, check on manufacturer website for instructions how, most routers you can press a "reset" button w/ a paperclip or ball point pen. Reconfigure the Belkin router, recreate the wireless network and see how everything works. If you are still having issues, humor me and connect the Dell directly to the DSL modem, bypassing Belkin router. See if you still have connection issues, if you do then it could be the DSL modem that is the problem and call your ISP to replace. If you don't have same issues then it's most likely an issue with the Belkin router. Replace it. Don't buy the dirt cheapest router at the store, but you most likely don't need the most expensive one either. Find a good middle ground router, ask sales associate to assist you accordingly.

Post back, Hope this helps!!

For the past year or so my internet has been working perfectly but within the last month or so my connection has started cutting out when in use. When this problem started happening it would happen 1-2 times a day and cut out for up to 30mins. now it doesn't cut out for as long but does so a lot more frequently, say 10-20 times a day. Our router is just this standard Thompson one we got sent out when we signed up for broadband. All the devices we use are connected via wireless. I rang up the company and they suggested changing the channel in the router but that didn't do anything.
One thing i noticed is when i'm trying to play Xbox i can barely party up with anyone even though my nat type is open. I use to be able to connect with everyone on Xbox without a problem and be able to play for hours on end without disconnecting.
Is there any way to fix this? Does the hardware need replacing? Any input would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

For the past few months I have been having a problem with the internet cutting out. It does this about every 20-30 minutes and i either have to restart my computer or if i wait about 15 minutes it will work again... for about 20-30 minutes before it cuts out again. Words can not express how frustrating this is. In the taskbar it still says I'm connected to the internet but I cannot bring up a webpage, or even log into my router. I can however ping a website and get a response. Also when chatting with linksys today my internet cut out yet i was able to continue chatting. Linksys was pretty much no help, as they don't want to admit that linksys and vista don't get along.

I used to have a wireless b network adapter, I had this same problem so I bought a WUSB54GSC thinking it was the adapter that was the problem. Well I had the same problem with the new one from day one. I cannot update the drivers for this adapter as there is only one (version 1.00). I've tried turning the firewall off and I've tried all different usb ports, but neither worked. Somebody please, please help! Thanks, -Tucker

So I updated my network drivers less then a week ago to the latest drivers on realteks site: Realtek and ever since then my internet cuts out from time to time, sometimes its once a day, sometimes its three times in an hour; and its the entire internet when it happens, web, AIM, games, Vent all go down. It never happened once before new drivers and it started happening right after new drivers so I'm lead to believe its the new drivers. I don't want to roll back my drivers b/c my old ones were causing me to BSOD and I'll take disconnects over BSODs. I've heard of other people having these problems but for all the internet searching I've done all I've heard is "update your drivers" which is what I just did. If anyone has an idea about a setting to modify in the driver or something (my roommate said he had to do this when he was having this problem but he has a different network driver then me) I'd greatly appreciate it

Hi, I seem to be having a problem with my internet connection. At first I thought it was my network adapter so I purchased a new one however the problem still occurs. I have updated the drivers for it and still nothing, so I'll explain below what is happening. I should note I am using a wireless connection.

When I load up my interent browser I will be connected fine, this connection may last for anything from 1 minute to a few hours, however mostly it cuts out every 5-10 minutes of browsing. It does not seem like a normal drop out where I just need to reconnect, my browser will become unresponsive for 30 seconds - 2 minutes and the WiFi will change to limited.

Sometimes when the browser becomes responsive again I will have connection back (until the next outage) othertimes I am left with "Limited" connection and even after disconnecting and reconnecting this does not help, I sometimes have to troubleshoot my connection until windows fixes the problem but even this does not always work.

I have been stuck with this problem off and on for the last lot of months and it has become more and more fustrating especially now my browser freezes too.

Any help will be much appreciated!

WiFi adapted I am currently using is: Asus PCE-AC68 802.11ac.

first time poster here, so forgive me if this has been answered. i tried to search for my problem, but didn't find anything useful.

just got a new computer HP pavilion p6142p and it is connected to the internet by an encore electronics 802.11g wireless usb adapter to a dynex router which is hardwired to a linksys modem.

my new computer, of course, has vista HPx64 and this is the last thing that i've had to beat into shape.....gotten all the other junk that i hate about vista ironed out, but i am still having problems with the internet.

ISP is comcast (ugh, i know) cable.

my husbands two macs are not affected by the internet trouble, so i know it's something on my end.
though, his computers are hardwired into the router.

mine will just disconnect whenever it feels like it. i did notice that the microwave was shutting it off, so i changed the channel on the router to 6. it seems to help a bit, but just now while typing this, it's gone a couple of times... no microwaves or anything then.

anyone have any ideas? my neighborhood is under some heavy road construction now and i was wondering if anything they might be using could affect my adapter getting its signal.

About a month or two ago I started experiencing network problems with my main computer in my house. It is connected to the internet through a wired connection via the router. It would randomly start cutting in and out for no reason that I could see and it happened around every 5 - 10 minutes. I also have 2 laptops, 2 xbox 360's, and 2 itouch's all connected to the internet wirelessly and they never got the same problem as the computer connected right to the internet. But about a week after that all of the previously listed wireless connections started cutting out every 5 - 10 minutes. For the past about 3 weeks I have been constantly resetting my router and modem in hopes it would fix, but it doesn't. I've placed them both in a different area hoping that would help, still nothing. So I just decided that maybe it'd stop after a while, so everytime it cut out I would connect to my neighbors wireless for about 3 minutes, continue what I was doing, reconnect to my home network, and go on that for 5 minutes, and repeat throughout the day.
But uh, this morning it seemed to be getting a bit ... Read more

So i recently got the Verizon Quantum Gateway router. I have this linked to my other router that has a coax cable via ethernet cable. My computer is connected wired to this new router. It works fine with the same speeds but the connection keeps cutting off. The lights in the front and the back are still on and nothing is blinking. Both wireless and wired connection get cut which is odd due to the lights still on. My iPhone still remains connected to this router as this happens. My computer still says ethernet is connected yet i cant access the web or anything else. I've already updated the wired and wireless drivers. The only way to recover is to unplug and replug this router and the connection would come back up for about 30min-1hr and cut off again.

Well, I've had this router for a year or so now, and ive had this problem before, but its always gone away, but so far its been over 24 hours in which ive had no reliable internet connection.

Anyway, let me try and explain the problem:

I will be surfing the internet, and suddenly the connection will go completley dead. Everything will disconnect and pages will cease to display. When i check on my routers settings, it tells me its not connected, but states that the physical connection is fine. Ive tried resetting it, and unplugging it. The only thing that seems to work is to turn the whole thing off, leave it for a while and reconnect it, and even then, its only temporary before it disconnects again.
The router is a belking wireles-G router with modem.

A:My internet keeps on cutting out

When i check on my routers settings, it tells me its not connected, Click to expand...

This is the status menu in the router itself - which monitors the connection to the phoneleine

It may be a problem with the ISP/connection or the router itself.

is it a combined router modem, wasnt sure if you meant modem seperate

Whenever i download a large file it cuts out half way through and stops downloading at a different point every time. So when i stream a movie it stops buffering and doesnt play the whole movie. This happens while downloading any type of file. I have two computers using the same internet and the same problem happens to both of them.

Any ideas? Thanks.

For some time now I have had a problem with my internet connection. It keeps cutting off.

My current setup is:

- I am with Virgin Media
- My modem is connected to a Linksys Router
- I have a wireless connection

When this happens my computer is still connected to Router but it would seem the Router is not receiving "the internet" from the Modem. I believe this to be a problem with Virgin Media but I thought I would ask here. Also, whenever this happens I Troubleshoot on Windows Live Messenger and the result is a DNS problem: it says "Your DNS appears unable to resolve IP addresses."; and Key Ports problem.

If someone could please help me with this I would be very appreciative of it.

Thanks, in advance, for any help anyone can give me.

I am having problems, for the past 2 days now my internet will cut out about every 10 or 15 minutes. I have DSL and haven't had a problem. I go to network connections and it says i am still connected but I am unable to do anything. I can repair the connection and it will be good for another 10 or 15 minutes then it cuts out again. If anyone has any idea what is going on I would be much appreciative. THANK YOU VERY MUCH

My internet keeps cutting out and it has lights on the it that shows when it cuts out and when its on.

I have also just enabled wireless last week because I have just gotten a laptop and before that my computer was connected to the router directly with an Ethernet cable and the internet never cut out then but now ever since ive turned wireless on it keeps cutting out.

Also I disconnect my home phone and it starts to working well again. What does this mean and how can I fix this?

A:my internet keeps cutting out

Could you give us more detail? What kind of internet setup is there? Is it a ADSL connection? Do you have a modem connected to a wireless router? Without knowing much and hazarding a guess, I'd say there is some wireless interference because of which the wireless keeps cutting out and as a result the internet.

I recently changed internet providers, going from Charter communications to AT&T. I connect to my router both via internet cable, and wirelessly, with my computer roughly 10 feet from it. Although the first couple of days went very well, over the past couple of weeks I have run into a problem. My internet service will constantly stop working. My signal strength does not go down, nor does my computer tell me I can't connect to the internet. Since programs like Skype and already opened web pages (facebook for example) work just fine, that seems to be correct. However, any page I try to refresh or open will sit there loading until the browser realizes it can't connect. If I wait a few minutes (Anywhere between 3-10) the connection will return to it's normal speed, but after a few short minutes, the same problem occurs. I have tried powering my router off and back on, hoping that the solution would be simple. My connection worked perfectly... for roughly 20 minutes. The other computers in the house (Both laptops) have also experienced this, although far less frequently. As I am finding myself having to reset my router almost every hour, I'd like to find a more lasting solution. Any help you have on this problem would be appreciated. Thank you.

A:Internet cutting off.

Make sure you have the latest router firmware update; then reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure it.

Do you get the same problem with a computer connected directly to the modem?

Hi there, and thanks for taking the time to help me. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, as its more of a computer issue that affecting my internet.

Right. So my problem is that every now and then my internet will cut out for about 10 seconds. This only happens on my computer, and its not my network as i've seen it happen on my computer while talking to people on Xbox live and nothing has happened to effect my xbox's connection. I'm running windows 7 64bit. My connection to my router is wired, and not wireless.

So i've surmised that something on my computer is cutting my internet out for a few seconds, and then reconnecting. This is really quite frustraiting as im an avid online gamer and with this happening two or three times an hour, its rather hard to stay competitive.

I use Ventrilo which is a VOIP programme, and i've been talking to someone when this has happened - there is no lag, or no delay in anyone speach when it happens - im just instantly disconnected from the server, and reconnected again within 10 seconds - which again, suggests its something on my PC and nothing to do with my connection.

Sorry if i'm repeating myself abit here, im just trying to make sure you understand my reasoning for thinking its not my internet.

Now, when i first installed windows 7 i had a similar internet problem. I had a look around and found a solution, but i can't for the life of me remember what it was. I seem to remember going sta... Read more

Hey all,

I am new to the forum, as i have been trying anything possible to fix this problem.

I have a linksys router with 2 computers connected through ethernet cable and 3 wireless. The internet web browsing is intermittent at times and you have to refresh the page at times for pages to load, but will for the most part work alright. The main problem is when you need a continuous connection for something, like when using AIM or listening to streaming radio. In order to sign on to AIM i had to change the default port (5190) to either 563 or 443. When trying to sign on with the default port, AIM will get stuck on the "starting services." Then when i am signed on to AIM using the 443 or 563 ports, the connection will keep going on and off and it is impossible to talk to anyone because of the lag. The streaming music and radio will have to rebuffer because the connection is interrupted. Also, when downloading a file, the download will get stuck after just a few seconds. I have narrowed the problem to the router because when connected directly to the modem there is no problem. Also, when only 2 or less computers are connected to the network (whether wireless or ethernet) there seems to be no problem. I have tried multiple combinations of computers. As soon as the 3rd computer connects to the network the problem begins. All of the computers are running windows XP, and i have disabled all known firewalls. Does anyone have any ideas??? They would be greatly appreci... Read more

My internet connection has been dropping constantly since the beginning of this year. I cut out for ~10 seconds then regain connection. This gets annoying especially when I'm gaming (Left 4 Dead 2, Counter-Strike, etc.). The modem lights stay on as well as my router lights. I have already called in three of my ISP's (Time Warner Cable) technicians all of whom think they have fixed the problem but haven't. I have changed my modem, router, ethernet cords; one of the technicians also changed the head of the cable wire outside at the cable box. I have also tried connecting the modem directly to my PC, but the same problem still occurs. I don't believe it's a problem with my PC because it's relatively new (~1 year) and all the other computers in the house cuts out as well.

Any suggestions, tips, solutions would be greatly appreciated!

If any of my hardware/software specs are needed, let me know.

Hi to all,

Bit of a weird problem. I can connect to the internet when I start my laptop (IE 7) however if it goes into standby and I then turn it on again it wont display a webpage (the internet still shows as connected though).

Instead an error message that I can only describe as res://IEFRAME.dll/dnserrordiagoff.htm shows up on the bottom left corner of the page before it comes up blank. This is so frustrating - I have to reboot everytime to use the internet when this happens.

Please can some one help (I'm using netgear wireless router and zonealarm for firewall) Windows XP Home.

It might be the network card not waking up after sleep mode. Try going into the device manager, go to your network card, right click it and hit Properties, go to the power management tab and uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

Just like that. sometimes if i just wait a few minutes it will come back, but most times i have to disconnect and then reconnect and HOPE that it works, when half the time it doesnt and half the time it does. This has become extremely aggrevating as Im constantly online and being kicked off like this is the most frustrating thing to ever happen to me. Could someone please help me resolve this issue? So i just got rogers wireless internet in my new place, and it cuts out at least once or twice a day. This happens on both my desktop (PC Vista 32bit using a wireless card), and my laptop (macbook pro). For some reason my laptop can pick it up more often*

Desktop: It works until it suddently stops. PC cant see the network anymore, or ANY nextwork (There are a few around me). Laptop cause often see the network but not connect. Laptop usually connects after trying for a few minutes. PC will connect after i reboot.

Im thinking its a problem with the router, either not transmitting properly, or im getting interference. Im situated on the 2nd floor and the router is right below me on the 1st floor.

I have a far better N Router here which i think might make the signal stronger, but im not sure how to simply unplug the old router and plug in the new one and make it work.

Old one is a SMC piece of crap. The good router i want to use is a Linksys N-Ultra.

Any suggestions?

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

This is quite the strange one to me...

Basically, when I either restart my computer or Repair the IP, I get my internet back... for about 10 minutes or less. After this time, I lose all connection to the 'net through any programs but it doesn't pop up saying "Limited or No Connection Available" in the SystemTray nor does it indicate that I have no connection through the Network Connections window (from Control Panel).

I called my Internet Provider and after about an hour of little checks we both concluded that it was not their fault (as everything was reading fine) and that there was nothing they could do. He suggested that it could be a spyware or virus program or something to do with the Switch that connects the two computers in the house to the internet (2 different IP addresses, same provider).

I downloaded an antivirus program as suggested by the Internet Provider called ShawSecure (it's provided free by them) and it found a couple things that I have since removed (I'd have to check the logs to find out exactly what they were, as I don't remember). I also downloaded the Ewido Security Suite and it found some more stuff, mostly in my Firefox Cookies (just trackers). I still lose the internet... in fact, looking at my MSN, it appears I just lost it, lol. I'll have to copy/paste this.

Any ideas what is going on?

Take a look in your logs, right click My Computer - Manage - Event Viewer, and look at the event logs, application and system. There should be some errors recorded in there that will point to what is happening. You could also run a test on your modem, I assume you are on dial-up, from what you posted.

Hello, I am using a Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium Edition, recently upgraded to SP2. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1420 (laptop) with Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 (2.4GHz, 800Mhz, 3M L2 Cache). For the past year and a half, I had been playing the Sims 3 on my laptop but 3 months ago shortly after I got the Sims 3 Ambitions, my video card was no longer able to handle the game and my laptop has been overheating ever since I began playing the Sims 3 games. I've been having this problem for a while now. My internet will randomly cut off but only on this PC. Sometimes the connection icon at the bottom right will turn to a yellow sign which means I need to reset my router or wait for it to come back but that can take upwards to an hour. Other times it will turn to a red cross mark and I need to restart my computer for it to come back. I thought it may have been my router at first so I upgraded and still had the problem. Then I thought it may be my ethernet cable so I replaced it and it still cuts out so my conclusion is that its a problem with the computer.

Hi there,

A public hotspot like your school's Wi-Fi can cause a huge amount of traffic/bottleneck due to so many students trying to connect at the same time, especially if most of them are utilizing the bandwidth heavily. There's not much that you can do, if you can afford to pay extra for a mobile hotspot, it's probably a doable option.

A:Internet Connection Keeps Cutting Off

im using avg anti virus.. and have no firewall on.. think its just the windows firewall that i am using. The Windows XP firewall protects against port scanning but has limitations and it is no replacement for a 3rd-party personal firewall.1. The XP firewall is not a full featured firewall. Normal firewalls allow you to specifically control each TCP and UDP port but XP?s firewall does not provide you with this capability. Instead, it takes a point and click approach to enabling or disabling a few common ports.2. The XP firewall does a good job of monitoring, examining and blocking inbound traffic but makes no attempt to filter or block outbound traffic like most 3rd-party personal firewalls. Thus, the XP firewall does not identify which programs attempt to initiate outbound network or Internet communications nor does it block the traffic when suspicious activity occurs. This feature can be helpful in preventing many types of malware attacks that may attempt to open ports or communicate with outside servers without the user's knowledge or consent. It also means that if your system has been compromised, a hacker could use your machine as part of a distributed denial of service attack. If your having trouble getting specific programs or services to reach the internet after you enable Internet Connection Firewall, do this:1? I posted a couple days ago with the same problem. I found this solution. My computer runs great now!'

Let me know...good luck!

If the above step fails you might have to try a clean boot to find out which third party program is causing the Internet explorer to crash. Follow the steps below for clean boot procedures.

1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.)

Hi, this is a general internet problem so I'm not quite sure where I should have made this topic but this forum is a lot better then most I have been to so figure I should try here first.

When I'm on my Playstation 3 in a chat room talking to a friend sometimes my internet will like cut out, I wont disconnect from the chat or nothing but for lets say 3 seconds the audio will go out and it will be laggy after it comes back for about a minute or so then it will catch up, now sometimes this happens lets say every couple minutes and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. I have Charter Cable Internet it is around 25 MB/S I believe and my router is a net gear (newer model) now I know its not SOLEY a wireless problem with the router because my Playstation 3 is hooked up wireless but it does happen more if it is using wireless rather then an Ethernet cable. This is not just a Playstation problem it is the internet problem I'm just using that as a good example. I was wondering if maybe something in my router was causing this or if anybody has any idea's on how to fix it because it is quite annoying.

A:Internet Problem - Cutting out or spiking (I think)

We can troubleshoot both wired and wireless connection issue.

First off, make sure that you have the latest firmware for your Router.

For the wireless issue, interference might be causing the disconnection.
Do this from your wireless computer:
Install and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector.
Click on the 'Show Networks' to display all wireless networks on the xirrus icon on your desktop if you have one running in a corner. Tap the Printscreen key on your keyboard, open up Paint then choose Edit from the Menu and select Paste, then SAVE it. Upload and attached it here.

MSE started popping up warnings that I was infected, about two days ago. I told it to remove the problem, and nothing happened. Today while surfing the internet my connection began cutting in and out and MSE began to spam reports that I was infected. Every time I tell MSE to remove the infection it comes back within a few minutes. My connection to the internet has become extremely spotty, Firefox gets set to run through a non-existant proxy every time I reboot, and some google searches (particularly to anything about virus removal) are being redirected. Any internet service (mumble, MSN, steam) connects and reconnects frequently.

While following the guide at I was unable to get GMER to the same options as pictured, all options other than Services/Registry/Files were greyed out and unclickable.

Lately the computers in my house have been having an issue maintaining a stable Internet connection. Our setup is the typical cable modem -> wireless router -> computers. We can connect to the wireless network no problem (always with the "Internet Access" icon as well), but typically pages cut in and out. This will happen once or twice a day out of nowhere, and last for a while.

The cable modem lights indicate nothing unusual. Resetting the wireless router doesn't seem to make a difference. I've picked an optimal channel. I'll be trying plugging an ethernet cable into the router later today to see if that works.

I'm not sure if it's the router or the cable modem causing the issue, or sure how to determine which it is. I don't mind buying a new one of either, but I'd rather not buy both

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

A:Internet connection regularly cutting out

It sounds like you have interference from cordless phones or neighbors. Try the Xirrus gadget to show you whats up with the neighbors, it will show what channels they are using so you can pick a clean channel. Get the router positioned as high and as far from walls or windows as possible, and no phone base close to the router.

I recently bought an Internet Everywhere mobile broadband dongle, since then my PC has been in a world of pain.

Regardless though, i seem to have got a virus known as gff6.exe and many other names, ive googled the topic and found nothing on how to get rid of it, all the threads in this forum about the virus arent answered, so to save me restroing my PC to factory settings can anyone help me get rid of it.

Essentially, i connect my dongle, then around 10 - 15 minutes into the connection, it'll cut out windows explorer (task bar, mycomputer etc) breaks and reboots up and it says Win32 services are down and that scvhost.exe has crashed which explains why my task bar etc doesnt show.

But as it goes, i dont know how it works on these forums so if you wouldnt mind telling me what program to run to get you the necessary PC information, then we can see whats happening.

Thanks for all the help.

Yesterday my computer started freaking out and my processor's activity shot through the roof with tons of activity on each core. Usually each core (out of 4) had at least 25% activity, spiking to 50% at times, and at any given time at least one core would be at 100%. RAM usage was 60% of 4 gigs on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system. This was while idling. Also, for all intents and purposes, I couldn't connect to the internet at all beyond just my computer connecting to the network. I could maybe load a single page once in a blue moon but beyond that, nothing. I've since deactivated my wireless card as a preventative measure. Other computers can connect though (hence why I'm here lol). I ran SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, HijackThis, and SpybotS&D. Will post the first three and then Spybot if y'all just really wanna see it (it's 15 pages long even though the program said it found nothing). my internet keeps slowing down or cutting out regularly. its not noticeable whilst browsing the internet or talking over msn etc, but when playing online games or talking with voip the connection stops for around 2-5 seconds and then works again, and it happens about once every 30 seconds. using teamspeak it tells me i have 12% packetloss, which i suppose gives an idea of the problem. connection signal is almost on full aswell.

Im using a wireless BT Homehub with a belkin wireless G receiver which was 20.

Ive only just bought the belkin receiver so i can take it back and get a different one if necessary.

also, hardwiring my internet to the router isnt really an option because of a large distance between me and the router.

i dont know if this is an internet problem or a problem with the network,

any ideas would be appreciated

thanks, ollie.

Ive done some research, and many people had similar problems, and had attributed it to their Motorola modem. But I could not find any fixes for it or anything.

Also, I currently have that, then I have a linksys wrt54g wireless router, then it goes to my computers.

Any advice would be appreciated!

This issue is driving me crazy. My internet will randomly cut out for a few seconds then pop back on. Makes web browsing or playing wow really difficult.

I thought it was just an AT&T DSL issue, so i just switched to Comcast Cable and im getting the exact same problem.

DSL was even plugged into my computer with an Ethernet cord, while Comcast Im connecting to wirelessly. Really bizzare.

Computer is a Windows 7 64 bit machine, it looks like the wireless and the ethernet plug are all integrated into the mother board. Here are the specs from HP:

Wired LAN: Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection
Wireless: Qualcomm Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband Wireless Network Module

I have an iPad and iPhone also connected wirelessly to the comcast router, I have not noticed any connection issues with them, just seems to be the PC.

The facts:

Recently I've gotten a new modem and router and ever since I have been experiencing internet disconnections randomly while watching things on different streaming sites (, netflix, hulu, hbogo, etc). The disconnect will sometimes occur during file downloads or while watching youtube, but not nearly as often as the streaming sites. I know the immediate assumption is that it's something in the router or modem. However, every other device that is hard wired or running wireless off the router does not experience this issue. That would be my ps3 which is hard wired doesn't have this issue, my macbook runs fine on wireless and hard wired, and all my tablets and phones run fine as well.

I've tried many different things to remedy this problem. I've updated all my drivers to the most current versions, reset my tcp/ip stack, disabled my firewalls (didn't help turned them back on), booted in safe mode (didn't help either), and I'm sure a couple other things I'm forgetting now. I've looked high and low for a remedy to this problem and I can't seem to find anything that helps.

Thanks in advance

Define "Internet disconnections". Do you mean your router loses connection to modem, modem loses connection to ISP, or computer itself loses connection to router?

I am extremely stumped with this one...

My internet is terrible. Not just terrible, but weird. It's fast, it's slow, it's gone, it's back, all in the space of seconds. Every other time I try to load the Google homepage, I get a "This webpage is not available" or "Chrome could not locate," the times it or any other webpage loads, it might be fine or it might be only halfway there. The fact that the error message varies is probably significant, who knows? Anyway the same thing with all the other browsers, and my poor torrent program doesn't know what to think. Pinging any website yields handfuls of timeouts in between... not timeouts.

My computer is a Dell Studio XPS... 900? 9000? Anyways, it's a year old and it's never had internet problems before. It worked fine on my dorm internet before I moved, and fine on my home internet. It's never caused any internet problems up until now. I have Norton Internet Security and I've tried disabling it, to no avail.

I know it has to be a problem with Vista or one of the programs... I booted it up with a Linux live CD and the internet is working beautifully. But I have no idea what it is beyond that. I really didn't change anything between the move. Something might have updated because it was one of the rare times I restarted the system?
Also, there is no router, it's connected directly to a modem. IDK if that changes anything.
This is insane... Read more

My Internet connection cuts out, only to switch itself back on again after about three minutes. For some reason, during the day my connection's pretty much fine - it has the occasional hiccup, but I can cope with that - only to cut out every few minutes after about six o'clock.

It's not the connection with my router - the signal strength is excellent, and I can connect to my router, just not to the Internet (as displayed here). Running Windows Diagnostics brings up this:
"There may be a problem with your DNS configuration.

Windows failed to find the well known host "" using DNS. The server may be down."

I use an Acer Aspire laptop with Vista Home Premium installed (although the connection also cuts out on the main computer, which is XP). My service provider is Tiscali, and the router is an Atheros AR5007EG. Both the desktop computer and my laptop can be connected to the Internet simultaneously.

I've tried going to Properties > Power management on the router, and unchecking "allow the computer to turn off device", but that didn't work. I've also tried defragging, but that didn't work either.

Also, I'm a Brit, in case that affects any channels/ISP suggestions.

It might be my provider, I guess, but I just wanted to check that there was nothing I could do before I ring up Tiscali and demand to know what they're doing to my connection, only to be dreadfully embarrassed when th... Read more

I just bought a new Dell XPS 410 with Windows XP Home. I tried hooking it up to the network at my current residence, both wireless and wired to the router(internet provider is some sort of DSL, Comcast or Qwest probably), and the internet cuts out for a second every couple of minutes, it come right back on in no more than 5 seconds. For browsing the internet its not really a problem, just every once in a while youll have to load a page twice, but for games online it will kick me off during that second of disconnect.
I brought the computer over to my dad's house and connected to his wireless network(Internet provider is Cox Cable), it still does it but for some reason not as bad. I only notice it there because every couple of minutes in World of Warcraft I will get a second of lag and then be back to normal, but it never totally kicks me off. I've uninstalled McAffe and turned off the Windows firewall thinking those might have something to do with it, but to no avail.

I have Comcast cable internet at 5-6 mbps. I have their combo internet/router box but I had them put it in bridge mode or something so I could use my own router...Which is a Netgear WNR1000v3. I have a brand new Windows 8.1 computer things been fine had it for a month...past couple days my internet speeds have been really slow (1.4-1.7 mbps) or I'm constantly loosing internet (even though icon in bottom right doesn't change) I can't load up or any other website and getting booted from my online games due to lost connection.

I've power cycled everything, rebooted router from the admin page. Everything! No other computers (all others win 7) on the network seem to be having a problem with their internet connection or speed just me! (as far as I know)

I'm using WPA2-Personal AES Encryption Type. Also I thought maybe I was getting Bluetooth interruption so I changed wireless mode to 150 mbps in hopes that would change it to N instead of B or G?

I use w10 on 3 devices, a mid range gaming PC, linx7 tablet, and lumia640. On the whole the experience is pretty good, syncing works well, reminders, alarms, contacts etc. This was one of the reasons I opted for android early, using chrome on a PC gave a similar, yet skimmed down, one OS feel.
I've not had one BSOD since updating the 'rig', my mobile works great, and the tablet is amazing for ?49! I was talking to my father in law who uses all 3 main OSs every day, and we both agree that windows just feels more 'grown up' than iOS or android. He wants a win10 phone next to replace his android (he'll have to keep the company iPhone4).
So like I said, does anyone else have a similar experience?

I seem to recall reading somewhere (not sure of this - maybe HP literature to discourage buying other scanners) that you can't have more than one scanner. Doesn't seem logical. Is more than one scanner (using only one at any one time) OK?

A:Are Multiple Scanner Devices OK?

As far as I know you have as many usb devices hooked up to one computer. There is a theoretical limit of 124, but it really is determined on how many usb ports you have as to how many usb devices you can hook up. Each device has it's own driver/software package, so I don't see any real reason you couldn't. I know for a fact you can have a printer (all in one) and scanner hooked up at the same time. My dad did using XP, Lexmark all in one printer and an HP scanner.

I use laptop, with system speaker volume too low, almost inaudible.
It has inbuilt sigmatel HD audio, with 3.5 mm jack ( I do connect my headphone with it).
I also posses a bluetooth headset (DELL).

Is there any way I can get output to both the headsets?

I need this to watch movie, so that me and my room partner can easily listen via saperate sets fo headphone without difficulty.

A:using multiple sound devices

as far as i know you cannot output to two audio devices at the same time from one program unless the program alows this (eg. PCDJ)

To solve the problem you could get a 3.5mm spliter and another set of 3.5mm headphones but this would probably require a trip to an electronics shop unless you have one already.

also post what OS you are running in case someone else knows of another way.

We receive Email on Desk Top, Ipad and Laptop that is repeated each time we open a computer and look at the mail . Also have two programmes on the Desk Top that again repeate the mail : Windows Live Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird. This causes untold mail and most annoying. How can I just see the mail once on either of the computers. We run Windows 7 on the Lap Top and Desk Top, the Ipad is the current model.

Hope you can assist me please, my husband and self are not very computer literate.

A:Email Across Multiple Devices

The closest thing would be to set them all up as IMAP instead of POP accounts. That way you get all the same email, the same deletions and moves, and the same emails marked as read across all devices. It doesn't quite prevent you from seeing the email more than once unless you move that email to another folder or delete it in which case the same thing will happen on the rest of the devices.

You would have to check with your email service to see if they support IMAP and to get the correct settings. Or post your email provider here.

Also, I changed the title of your thread from your name to something more meaningful.

My system has a sound card and two USB audio devices. I can click the speaker -> options -> propertied -> mixer device and select 1 device and reboot and play via that device. However I would like to have all audio devices work at the same time. Is there a way to do this? If not, is there a way to switch without rebooting? (Windows 2000).

hi, i'm relatively new here, so i'm not really sure how to do this but alot of my games are having problems i.e. ? has cause in invalid page fault in unknown. I am led to believe it is a soundcard problem, i use an onboard sound card with the VIA VT1612A 2-channel audio Codec and i look in multimedia properties under audio devices, i had two different ones, Audio for via Ac'97 Enhanced Audio Controller(WDM), and Audio for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM), i was told by a friend to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall to fix this, i did, now on top of those two devices i have a second Audio for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM). I also have three MIDI for WDM-based Device. ANd Mixer for VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM), along with two Mixer for Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM),this may be normal, but like i said i'm relatively new at this and it doesn't really look normal, so can someone please help me? Thank You

A:need help, multiple audio devices

Look at the back of your computer. Do you have onboard sound AND a seperate PCI sound card? If so then you need to disable the onboard sound in the BIOS setup and use only the PCI sound card.

Now go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall ALL VIA AC97, AC97, Vinyl audio drivers and anything else that looks like it goes to sound drivers.

Then go to Device Manager and uninstall/remove all remaining VIA/Vinyl/AC97 devices listed under the Multimedia heading. Reboot only after all are removed.

Then download the latest VIA Vinyl drivers. When you first run the new driver setup program it will look to see if there are still drivers installed, if it finds any then it give you the option to uninstall them. Do that and reboot.

Then run the VIA installation again and install the drivers, and reboot.

At any point Windows may redetect the sound card and want to reinstall the drivers - let it. Do NOT click Cancel on the Found New Hardware Wizard. If all goes well prior to install the latest driver the sound card should be detected as a PCI Multimedia Device and that means all the drivers will have been removed.

Here's the latest drivers:
They are in a ZIP file, once extracted you need to run the SETUP.EXE file to install the drivers.

Hi, I recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv6974 Laptop, it came installed with Vista 64-bit. It works fine and all, just one thing I want to figure out.

The laptop has built-in speakers, a built-in mic, 2 headphone jacks and 1 microphone jack. I plugged my headset into one of the headphone jacks, my headset microphone into the microphone jack, and my external speakers into the second headphone jack.

What I wish to do is to set it up in a way that I can play music through my speakers, and Ventrilo through my headset.

The way I did this before on my desktop was that there was this option in the Realtek Audio Manager called "enable playback multi-stream" that separated the two audio jacks on the computer (one in the back, and one in the front). Then I was able to choose a different audio driver for Ventrilo, and use the default one for music. This was on XP, and I only had one sound card btw.

And now for Vista, I've tried looking through the Audio Device Manager and the Realtek Audio Manager but couldn't find anything that would help much, except in the Realtek Audio Manager there's this "tie up all input jacks something something, etc" that sounded like it was what I was looking for, but all it did was mess up my microphone.

To add more to this confusion, there is actually another audio device in the Audio Device Manager, but it's the Digital Audio Receiver, and I don't really know what that does.

I've asked about this problem elsewhere, and some peopl... Read more

Hi, ForeverRen, and welcome to the forums.

I think HP would be your best bet in this they would be able to tell you for sure if that can be done with their hardware or not.

I would like to connect a variety of wireless devices in my house to my work VPN while allowing other devices in the house access to my home network as normal.

I was hoping to find a wireless ADSL router that allows me to associate a LAN port to a VPN connection, then connect a wireless access point to that port. I could then run two wireless networks in my house, one that would connect to my work VPN and the other that would not.

Is there such a router?

If not, is there some other way of doing what I need?

Sorry for the bump, but would this do the trick?

i have speakers connected to the hdmi and have a fm transmitter connected to the headphones jack. how do i get the soud to come out of both? Picture:

A:Sound from multiple devices

You can't have sound from both at same time - it's either one or other because the headphone jack is designed to mute the speakers when headphones are plugged into it.

So here's the setup:

Windows Home Premium X64, 8GB Ram, I5-3570K CPU

Recently built. I understand there's been an issue with Windows 7 using different devices for audio outputs. I was told by MS IT to use Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) for 'combining' my programs/devices into the same output.

My computer is mostly built for Audio recording (Audacity, Adobe Audition), and virtual instrumentation (Reason 5, FL Studio, Abelton, etc...)

My issue is that while some of these programs work well with VAC, key important ones such as Reason 5 do not. With my particular soundcard and driver, there is a degree of latency between the time I press a note on the keyboard to when I can actually hear it.

FL Studio automatically bundles ASIO4ALL - an awesome '0 latency' driver pack that comes with a easy to use control menu. ASIO4ALL is automatically selected as the audio card driver.

However I am unable to use VAC whilst keeping the latency low at the same time.

I need some help if you please!

A:Multiple Devices - VAC not working for needs.

I have a Sonar X2 (Producer) studio. Something like your questions would be better answered on a board such as where recording and DAW equipment is the topic of the forum.

I don't like ASIO4ALL, it can cause problems. I've had problems with trying to use it when I had a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. I've seen other posts (on other forums) about ASIO4ALL problems.

I have a Roland Octa-Capture and an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R and I only use the drivers supplied by Roland and MAudio.

Ok, this isn't really pc related, but I'm sure it's an issue many of you face every day. I have a PDA/GPS, cell, bluetooth headset and blackberry. I use each every day, which means every night I have to plug all four devices in to charge. Does anyone know of some kind of charging station that would house all four power adapters neatly and allow me to charge all four devices from one outlet? Is there some kind of travel charger that would let me plug all four devices in to charge at once? Such a hassle taking all four adapters every time I travel.

I have an ethernet connection running from a router to another room and I wonder if I could use that single connection for multiple devices (computer, game systems, etc). Will a hub work for a connection coming from a router?
Is it possible to have them all up and running simultaneously or does it have to be one device at a time?

A:Single IP, multiple devices

If it's a standard SOHO router, and not a switch or a modem, you can have up to 253 devices attached. (There are 256 addresses available, but you can't use the first or last address, and one is reserved for the gateway--the router itself.) Note that the 253 addresses includes wireless devices.
