Windows update reverted my system settings to old version of windows

Q: Windows update reverted my system settings to old version of windows

UPDATE: I went into themes and everything is greyed out except the basic old themes. I tried find and fix problems for aero themes display but it didn't come up with anything... when looking through google I see things about updating registry entries but I'm not sure I should be doing that based on google suggestions with my luck.

Windows did an update and now my system looks like its running an older version of windows...see attached picture. If I do a system restore to before the update I can get it running like it should again, but there should be a way to fix this without the restore, I just can't figure it out. Any ideas

I'm also getting errors about not being able to log into the windows system to check for updates when I start the computer, not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Hi there

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire for the business & I was very specific at time of purchase that it must NOT run Vista as the accounting software I run is not compatible with Vista.

All went well for about a month & then the accounting software started to play up. I contacted their tech support people & they talked me through a few fixes however during these fixes we discovered latent COMPATIBILITY FOLDERS on the computer that simply should not be on a machine unless it is running Vista. I contacted the store I bought it from & they admitted that it had originally come with Vista but had been upgraded to run Windows 7 Home Premium prior to purchase. He told me to come in & they would remove the components that had not been removed properly during upgrade.

I was unable to go in that day but told them to expect me within a day or two at the most however before I could get back (the following night in fact) the computer ran some scheduled updates from Microsoft & when I went to use it the next day it was all sorts of wrong! It didn't even look the same (desktop) & files were missing or moved. When I went to online help I kept getting diverted to Vista help rather than Windows 7 help. I contacted the computer store again & they said that the update may have found these compatibility folders & freaked out & reverted the machine back to Vista...???

Anyway, I have lost loads of files that I had not yet backed up as I was planni... Read more

A:After update, laptop reverted FROM Windows 7 TO Vista?????

Hello Skye,

Sorry, but a Windows Update WILL NOT revert a upgraded Windows 7 back to Vista like that.

It sounds a lot more likely that the computer store messed up and did a factory restore from the recovery partition on your computer, and that is what restored Vista since that was on your computer from the factory.

If this is what they did, then that most likely may have also wiped out all data that was previously on your computer for good.

I wouldn't let them get away with trying to cover up their mistake with a BS line about it being caused by a Windows Update.

I have an HP Pavilion Laptop, Windows 7-64bit.
My WMP11 does the following:
1. It clones music titles...even in front of my eyes.
2. Music files disappear.
3. Titles are now assuming wrong names even though content remains.
4. My music files come from my Music Library. Those have not changed or cloned..

5. I deleted WMP11 and re-installed...but all the above errors returned.
6. My Library files are skewed. Music is mixed with Video and with Documents and all around. Why? I dunno.
7. My music library is around 25GB; but it changes with the losses mentioned in #2 above.
8. I tried RealPlayer but their format leaves a lot to be desired by me. Also, it keeps requiring Flashplayer and no matter how many time I download it, it asks for it again.
9. I am 80 years old, not very computer savvy and I'm blessed with Parkinsons. Music is my hobby.
10. HELP.....PLEASE!

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?
Thanks!
Nelson Davis

Just last week I'd gotten my iPhone & updated the iTunes to the new iTunes 10. But just a few days ago I turned on the computer and it had a blank screen for a while so i turned it off then on again. It told me it didn't shut down properly so instead of starting it normally I chose the other option of, well, I don't even remember. Then it asked if I wanted to reboot or something like that & make the laptop go back to the previous condition in which it was better, which, unfortunately was before I'd updated the iTunes. So now whenever i try to open it, the message "The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a new version of iTunes". I even tried downloading the new iTunes hoping it could pick up all my hopefully-not-lost music but in the process of installing it, it "could not access network location %APPDATA%\" and it requires QuickTime, which it looks like i have.
My parents have no idea about this & they will kill me if I've ruined my iTunes and, i may know my iPhone but I sure cannot figure out my own laptop

P.S. when it had asked me if I wanted to do the reboot/restart thing, it had told me it cannot be undone. So this shows what kind of comprehension skills I have

Hey guys I have a weird problem here, my computer reverted it's settings like the day after reformatting it which was 2 weeks ago, don't know why. My installed applications still here but the desktop shortcuts, pinned programs in the taskbar are missing, browsers are still here but the history, cache, add-ons, extensions and every settings for the browsers are deleted, it's like a newly installed one. Also a weird problem with the theme, currently on safe mode (just wanted to go to safe mode), my theme is like Windows XP, don't know that status in normal mode yet. Also before I can get to the desktop, it say's "Welcome" and then after that, this word appeared "Preparing your Desktop". I didn't do anything that will restore the PC to the date of reformatting it.

Edit: I know the reason, my PC did a system recover not restore without my interaction or anyone's interaction, what I did earlier was, plug the cables to the socket, turn on the PC and then selected safe mode (just wanted), while loading files, I went away for a while (don't know what's happening), after coming back, it was on the desktop, noticed shortcuts are missing but files are still there (working), restarted it, noticed that the "Preparing your Desktop" is appearing on the welcome screen. Will do system restore now, and see if every settings, files, etc., is restored, if it works, I need to know what caused my PC to do a system recover without my interaction or anyone's interactio... Windows Update keeps trying to update Office 2003.
I have a trial version of Office 2003 that came with my computer.
I do not want it at this time, but I may want it at some point in the future.
I don't know if it can be hidden from the Windows update but if not, I am not sure how to fully get rid of it.
It has never been "installed."
Windows update fails every time, of course, because it isn't now nor has it ever been installed.
The biggest problem is that it keeps trying to apply the same updates over and over and over. It slows down the shutdown as it repeats the attempt(s) 3 times before each shutdown and also it keeps downloading the same and or other Windows Updates for Office 2003.
1 - Can Windows Update be configured to leave my Trial version of Office 2003 alone?
2 - If not, how can I get rid of the Office 2003 trial version.
Obviously uninstall is out of the question.
3 - Once it is gone, do I need to do anything with regards to Windows Update?

Windows XP SP2
Compaq Presario
3200+ AMD Athlon XP
512MB Ram

Thank you

A:Windows Update Tries to update trial version of Office

If you uninstall the "enhanced" Windows update, it should only try to update Windows, not other Microsoft applications.

Why is uninstalling Office 2003 not possible?

I figured out how to do a clean install of Windows by following the steps on this website: http://lifehacker.co...an-upgrade-disc

My laptop appears to have defaulted to its factory settings. All of my personal settings have been deleted and while all the programs I had downloaded remain, when opened they act as if I have never before used them. I think that the latest Windows 10 update might have reset my windows to the default (initial/standard) settings. I leave my PC ON over the night and when I woke up the PC seemed to have restarted over night (I say to myself it might have been that the power went off sometime over the night or that windows freaking 10 updates restarted my PC), and now I have all of the settings I did to windows back to their default state and all the file associations are reset back to default. Even the video player settings are reset to default.

I have had my Dell 8700 for little over a year and have had problems from the beginning.  I am 72 years old, and I am at my wits end!!!

A hard drive was replaced in the summer of 2015, but I have still had problems with the computer shutting down and my having to refresh it to factory setting.

I thought updating to Windows 10 would solve some problems, and I did this in October, 2015.  Everything was fine until a couple of months ago.  The end result was when I tried to refresh the computer to factory defaults, it went back to 8.0 or 8.1, and I evidently lost something in the process.
Now, I cannot update to Windows 10 and when I tried to resinstall the Dell Operating System, I get for both:  "WE COULDN'T UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION."
I DO HAVE A SYSTEM BACKUP ON 20 CDS (MADE WHEN I HAD WINDOWS 10).  Could I reinstall the system with these backupdisks?  How do I do that?  I also have a Dell 2 Boot USP stick, I have a recovery stick, too, but it semed that when I used this, I received a message that not all files were recovered
What should I do at this point?

A:Error message when trying to update to Windows 10 or to reinstall operating system 8.1: We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

On MBR disk, Windows 10 requires a 500MB system reserved partition, while 100MB in Windows 7, so you can try to extend system reserved partition.
In disk management, you can only extend partition using the unallocated space next to its right side. so even if you shrink D: drive, the option to extend the efi partition is still grayed out. My suggestion is to use a third party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, both the standard (free) or the Professional(paid) version can extend partition as long as there is unallocated space on that hard drive. to see more information read:

I just attempted to activate my new installation of Windows, but when manually entering the product key in System properties, it said that I could not use an update key to make a clean install. I then followed the tutorial here on the forum, and merged the MediaBootInstall file downloaded from that tut. Afterward I entered slmgr -rearm in an elevated CMD Prompt, which it said was successful.

After rebooting, I again tried to manually enter the key from System Properties, but it failed, and so I tried using the telephone number. After giving it the number groups on the activation window, it said that it couldn't verify them, and tried to switch me over to a live rep, but after it rang twice, it hung up.

Obviously, I will try again, but instead of perhaps going in circles, I wanted see if I had forgotten anything, or had done something wrong?

Update - 9/8/15

Fixed by reinstalling Windows fresh (Again).

I think the problem was caused by installing Windows linked with my Microsoft account and then switching that to a local user. My Microsoft account was registered for the insider program so perhaps I was receiving the fast updates and switching to a local account put me on slow updates which got Windows Update muddled in the confusion.

Original Post

Windows Update appears to be stuck/broken. It displays this loading animation even when left alone for an entire day (See screenshot). All the other panels such as Windows Defender will display their available options, it is only Windows Update that will not show.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

I have made some alterations to the service configuration, disabling what I had been advised as unnecessary services. I have reverted as many of those changes as I could remember but it is a possibility that one of those changes caused this.

Background Intelligent Transfer service is "Running" and set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".
Windows Update service is "Running" and set to "Manual (Trigger Start)".

8 Aug 15 - Edit: I have cross referenced services with another computer with an unaltered fresh install of Windows 10 Home. No difference in service configuration was found.

Internet connectivity is stable. Network profile is "Public". No alterations have been made to the default network configuration.

Pressing the Windows Key to return to the relative tranquility of my desktop and it throws an error from 'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library' "Runtime Error Program: C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\SystemSettings.exe" This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I prefer the control panel versions too, just right click action center flag icon choose Open Windows Update and away we go. What nerves me with the immersive version is looking at the history, it's much easier to read in the control panel version. I guess that's why the registry hack came out so quick in 10TP.

Just posting as a warning to others (and to vent my annoyance a bit)

I always set up my Windows update settings to "check and notify but don't download and install unless I tell you to" to prevent HDD thrashing, performance downgrading at the worst possible times and annoying "oh, you need to restart" notifications.

All working fine... but yesterday I notice some random and annoying HDD thrashing, bit later on the windows update restart notification wants to restart the computer ... what ?

It turns out my update settings had been reset to "automatically download and install (recommended)" without my knowledge and express permission. I was not amused .

And no, nobody else but me has access to the computer, much less someone who knows from where the windows update settings can be modified. And I doubt any malware/virus would be interested in keeping my windows up to date automatically.

Don't know what exact update caused it, but I know I will disable all windows updates if this happens again.

I installed Windows 10 around the time it came out, much to my delight I faced no problems with it, but now after reading about this 'November Update' that touts many of the features I wanted back. I read on Microsoft's own site that to get the update I would have to of had Windows 10 for 31+ Plus days e.g. a day over the time limit to go back to Win 8.1 or 7. It's long past the 31 days but the "Go back to Windows 7" is still there?

I have a friend who wants some help. She has a computer that was used by her grandson. It was Windows 8 when she got it but we upgraded it to 8.1 and set it up as her computer. She has been using it for about eight or nine months now with no problems, it seemed there was no trace of her grandson't stuff but she has just rung me to say that when she turns it on now, it goes to the log in part for her grandson and she also thinks it is now Windows 8. again, not 8.1. I have to help her tomorrow and would appreciate any suggestions of how it can be fixed. Has anyone else had this happen?

Thanks,
Unibeck1

A:Windows 8.1 apparently has reverted to 8

First off verify that it is in fact 8.0 and not 8.1. Open the System screen and see what it lists under Windows edition. On my PC in small print it says Windows 8.1, but the large blue text to the right just says Windows 8. If it is Windows 8.0, my guess is the grandson did a factory recovery to fix or cover up something he did. If it is just Windows 8.0, doing all the available Windows updates should make the upgrade to 8.1 available as an option in the Windows Store. You do the upgrade though the windows store. I currently don't like Windows 10 and I don't like Chrome or Firefox. IE is simply better than other browsers, people just hate on it because it makes them look cool. But anyway, is there a way to update the version of IE in Windows 7 to the one that
is found in Windows 10, one that is not technically supported in Windows 7? I would hate to ditch IE for the insecure, crashing mess that is Chrome.

I had that also with this update.
So here is what I did to get over it.
I restarted it then ran the Disc Clean Up app
Which cleared all traces from the Disc
Then let it download and install, which took some time
Then it installed to 30% then Restarted then finished at 100%
Which again sat there for some time then flashed up it had finished and now running all ok on all my systems
Hope that may hopefully help you with your problem
Let us know how you get on
The one thing I found with this one, you cant rush it

Ive tried every possible guide and solution I could find, including applying the update from a full offline installer, nothing works.

You had been using Windows Update which you have failed to install 10586.

Consider trying the other method also recommended by Microsoft itself.
Download the Media Creation Tool (MCT)

Make sure you select the same language, same bit version and same Windows Edition as the one you are now running.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Once it is downloaded, run the Tool > select Create installation media for another PC.
That will begin downloading the ISO file to your computer.
When it is downloaded, right click at the ISO file > click Mount > click Setup.exe.
That will begin installing.
You have the choice of keeping your settings, files and apps, or keeping nothing.
No product key is required.
Activation is automatic.

Hey, ???

I'm just getting a Windows update now (ca. 10:13 AM Brisbane Australia) - my laptop screen suddenly went black and when things reappeared, previously-open windows were misaligned and differently sized.

The Windows Settings box which had been showing downloads (I had hit "search for updates") was blank. I rebooted it and it shows "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607" downloading. I'd researched 1607 and had understood it amounted only to a download in megabytes if you already had 1511 (which I do).

I'm on metred connection - is this going to happen all the time??

I have installed Win 8 Professional x64 bit - the release version. Yes I do have it. Windows update fails. I have run everything I found on three different forums and Windows 8 Professional update still fails.

The install was flawless - surpised me. Windows 8 accessed the internet at the start of the install so that isn't a problem. All the drivers and BIOS are current. I can access the internet on IE 10 and that doesn't fail like internet explorer fails in Win 7 professional (yet). So does anyone, yes even you MS, know how to get Windows 8 to update?

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3194496)

Three days ago my desktop tried to update 1607 3 times. Each time on reboot it says failed to update and reverts. Each day it tries again at shutdown.

Yesterday my second(son's) computer updated and all I could see was a black screen with a circle. Had to do a repair and it reverted back 2 two updates. Note, this computer does not have integrated graphics - so that fix process would not work.

Now the wife's computer wants to update but I am not restarting it - if hers goes down it will be hell in my household.

I looked on the web and don't see much about this update getting fixed by Microsoft. Any ideas what I should do? My main computer is asking to try again and it will just fail or worse - black screen. I told the family not to shutdown the wife's but I know at some point it will try to do the update on its own.

This is the worst mess we have ever had, but all I see are web pages about the anniversary update - not this one.

Reading around, it seems the state of things at Microsoft has changed drastically since W10 was announced.

Most frighteningly they changed the name of the updater and left this article to depreciate
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/949104
"Note The latest version of the Windows Update Agent for Windows 8.1 is 7.9.9600.16422. The latest version of the Windows Update Agent for Windows 8 is 7.8.9200.16693. The latest version of the Windows Update Agent for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP is 7.6.7600.256."

Horrifyingly that is still the top result for Windows Update Client because everything sucks.

Anyways so from my understanding, it seems that reinstalling windows 7 will result in the updater trying to update to 7.6.7600.320 which is a horrible update that eats memory and takes three times longer to update.

So one should manually update the updater to the latest version before doing anything on a fresh install of windows 7. But where is one to go to find the latest version? Microsoft seemingly helps with this but does not, and instead deceives as I have explained above.

Anyways, is there a better way than using google to search these forums to find out? https://www.google.ca/#q=latest+clie...ion/&tbs=qdr:m

It has Office 2003 and has Symantec Corporate 10.01 already installed. That is what I used to remove the worms. I am now tring to apply MS updates for both Office 2003 and WinXP. I cannot install the WGA tool that is required to use the Windows Update site. For some reason everytime I install it says it has failed. I have gone to Microsoft and validated the version of Windows manually, but it came to no avail. I noticed that when I went to the Office update site it says that I need the administrative version of this update. Which is making me believe that I need he admin version of Windows updates as well. Does anyone know how I can change this setting? Or lead me to somwhere that does? It would be nice to download the WGA tool manually and attempt to install but I cannot find it anywhere on the internet. Thanks so much!

Mike

Instead of downloading the update each time, try to create a bootable USB flash drive with windows 10 anniversary, and run the update from it, sometimes this solve issues like yours. download the windows 10 update using Microsoft tool:http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Ok so my laptop's interface for some reason has been changed somehow to the windows classic interface and I'm not able to change it back. There's not even an option for it when I right click on the desktop, go to properties and such. Also, I'm not able to pick up a signal to connect to the internet. Things are slow loading as well. I don't think it's a virus or anything so I didn't bother including a HJT log. I had installed the Firefox plug in for Windows Media Player recently, but even after that I wasn't having problems. After doing that I restarted like it told me. I don't know if that might have any sort of impact or not. It just happened randomly and abruptly. I would really appreciate any sort of help on this issue. Thanks guys.

Hello-

I have two questions about windows update.

First is whether there is anyway to completely disable Windows update from bugging me about restarting my computer to install updates. I know about setting the interval to the max of 1440 in the group policy editor and I know how to manually kill the service with net stop wuauserv. Neither of those stop it from coming back completely.

The second is if there is anyway to unsubscribe from getting microsoft's monthy malware removal tool update. Seems trivial I know, but I get tired of hiding it.

Thank you

Hello livevil,

You could use the tutorial below to disable Windows Update automatic restart to let you manually restart when you're ready to. Windows Update - Enable or Disable Automatic Restart
It's would best to always install the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MRT) updates to help keep your system safer.

I have a Windows 10 system upgraded from Win7. Windows Update failed on this recent cumulative update. The web has lots of hits about this. After trying a number of fixes, the following worked for me:

1. I went into Disk Management and saw that my System Reserved Partition was 100MB vs the minimum recommended (according to some sites) of 400MB.

2. I used MiniTool Partition Wizard (free edition) to resize the System Reserved Partition to 450MB. That required burning a CD from a downloaded ISO.

3. Since the Windows update failed again, I deleted the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download (I did NOT delete the DOWNLOAD folder itself, just the contents)

4. BINGO! The update installed.

Hope this helps someone else who may have this problem.

A notification in the task bar says that there is a Java update available on my Windows XP professional computer and I click on it and it presents me with a message "Java installer requires a newer version of Windows." and I hit OK. but later in the day or another day, the same update available shows up with the same requires a newer version of Windows when I click on it.
Why is Java trying to update itself on a version of Windows that the newer version is not compatible with? how do I stop it from showing up?

A:Java update available - Requires newer version of Windows; repeat later

Hi Sylveon You should disable the Java Auto Updater program that is being launched on start-up. You can easily do that via the msconfig panel, under the Startup tab. Like for Java Update Scheduler and disable it. Once done, go in the Services tab, look for a service with the same name and disable it as well. That should do the trick.

At one time, I had Windows 2013 on my desktop computer. At some point I upgraded to Office 2016 and uninstalled Office 2013. However, every day for weeks now, Windows Update has tried (unsuccessfully) to install the following:

Security Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB2956151) 64-Bit Edition
Update for Microsoft Lync 2013 (KB2956174) 64-Bit Edition
Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB2899522) 64-Bit Edition
Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB2881001) 64-Bit Edition
Security Update for Microsoft Lync 2013 (KB2881013) 64-Bit Edition
Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB2850036) 64-Bit Edition

I don't know if other updates are being blocked because these can't be installed. Plus, there appears no way to tell Windows Update NOT to try to install these again, as previous versions of Windows had.

Any suggestions on how to stop Windows Update from trying to install these every day??

A:Windows update fails for version of Office that no longer exists

Hi bertsiskin, welcome to Ten Forums. It might be faster to uninstall office 2016 and then run the fix it tool from Microsoft to totally uninstall Office 2013. Uninstall Office 2013, Office 2016, or Office 365 from a Windows computer - Microsoft Office . I would bet that it did not uninstall completely. And then reinstall Office 2016.

Windows 10 Version 1607 driver signing changes - gHacks Tech News

(hit link ^^ for entire story, snippet below):

Microsoft announced recently that the upcoming version 1607 of Windows 10, known as the Anniversary Update, will only load kernel mode drivers that are digitally signed by Microsoft.

The change won't affect all systems however the company notes, as only new installations are affected in the beginning.

Starting with new installations of Windows 10, version 1607, the previously defined driver signing rules will be enforced by the Operating System, and Windows 10, version 1607 will not load any new kernel mode drivers which are not signed by the Dev Portal.

The list of exceptions to the new policy is long. Below is the most important information in regards to the new kernel mode drivers policy:
PCs upgraded to Windows 10 Build 1607 from a previous version of Windows (for instance Windows 10 version 1511) are not affected by the change.
PCs without Secure Boot functionality, or Secure Boot off, are not affected either.
All drivers signed with cross-signing certificates that were issued prior to July 29, 2015 will continue to work.
Boot drivers won't be blocked to prevent systems from failing to boot. They will be removed by the Program Compatibility Assistant however.
The change affects only Windows 10 Version... Read more

A:Windows 10 Version 1607 (Anniversary Update) driver signing changes

This is kind of old news in that this change was announced last year but got delayed. I'm not sure what the practical implications are in that anyone loading unsigned drivers probably doesn't have Secure boot on. This one is a non-issue.

A:Trouble trying to install Windows 10 Anniversary Update, version 1607

Hello JRAllen72653 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

One advice I can provide here would be to try a different method for either update by upgrade or planned clean install which doesn't seem to be what you have been looking for. When the Redstone 1 update didn't even arrive here for 3 separate desktops as well as a recently new laptop where 10 came already on not seeing the update still lead to fail of the MC Tool to see the immediate online upgrade take place or create the usb media needed.

Twin solutions were then sought! The first in order to see all machines updated was to download the "windows.iso" by way of the MC Tool which equals both the 32bit and 64bit flavors for both the Home and Pro editions. We call that a "4 in 1" type of download that covers everyone.

The second item on the agenda did opt to use a 3rd party program not the Windows option to mount the iso downloaded onto each machine or run from a flash drive where the setup.exe main executable would be manually started to watch each upgrade install take place. Once all systems were set which included one desktop only lately being upgraded from 7 Home Premium to 10 Home and then still waiting for the update to go on before return to owner was to visit a MS download iso type page to grab both the 32bit and 64bit smaller Dual Edition iso downloads to keep onhand.

For a final fix to all older already made up flash drives for the Threshold 2 update last November as well as for Windows Insider P... Read more

I have been trying for a full week now, to no avail. Whenever I apply the update, it goes to the "Restarting" screen...and gets stuck there indefinitely. Even after a few hours, it's still on that screen. So ultimately I have to force shutdown my PC (after which I can use it as per normal). I also do not believe I have any malware on my PC (have scanned multiple times with Kaspersky just to be sure).

I had updated to Windows 8 > 8.1 > 10 on this same PC before and never faced a single issue. I also never mess around much with default system settings.

Meanwhile, for my laptop, the update went extremely smoothly.

So can someone please help me out here?

Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.Restart a few times then try again.Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader). If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.Perform a clean boot, restart then try again. If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disabl... Today I saw that Windows had scheduled a major update and for that a reboot somewhen during the night. I decided to trigger that update right away.

My laptop (MS' flagship Surface Pro 4) started to download and upgrade which took suspiciously long (about 45 minutes)!
Then it rebooted and was "Applying the updates" for another 15-20 minutes or so. Then it rebooted again (which wasn't a surprise at first because there was a line stating that it would reboot several times during the process.

What *was* a surprise, however, was that after the second reboot there was a very short flash of a messages stating something about "Attempting...." (but I hadn't time to read that) and then suddenly a message "Restoring you previous version of Windows". So, obviously something must have gone badly wrong during the update! :-(

Bravo Microsoft: that why we love Windows 10 so much! Unasked updates all the time and then close encounters with total system crashes! And you can't properly update your own devices! If I want to gamble I normally go elsewhere, not to my laptop but with Windows-10 I learn a know a whole new world, indeed!

Hi,

I'm having troubles with my laptop lately, as both my security softwares were taken down, and now I'm running on Avast! and spybots. I used super-anti spyware and it removed a trojan however the removal seemed to be unclean as there's still a startup registry for the malware which kept on regenerating. In addition I discovered lately that my windows update with an error code of 0x80073712 have failed multiple times, and none of the solutions provided by Microsoft resolved the problem.

I have unsuccesfully uninstalled MSE via Fix it from Microsoft, and now have inaccessible directories to the folders of MSE.

***I KNOW ITS OBVIOUS BUT I SPENT ALL MY MORNING LOOKING THROUGH FORUMS AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE MISLEADING TO MAKE YOU BELIEVE THAT IT CAN BE DONE*** For all of you wondering if you can get the 14.99 update and download the ISO and burn it on a DVD or USB and then install it on a different computer or on a fresh hard drive, BEWARE, because the updated version REQUIRES you to have a legit copy of Windows 7, on your hard drive in order to install the Windows 8 update, if you don't there is no work around, Windows 8 will install but will not activate unless you enter a valid retail key, It will state that the key that you have is a upgrade key and that a valid copy of windows must be on your hard drive before installing Windows 8. HAPPY UPGRADING!

A:Do not install update version of Windows 8 on a clean hard drive

There is a registry key hack that you can use to activate it.

With that said, don't cheat the system...it's you don't qualify for the 14.99 upgrade, don't buy it.

MS made me update a couple of days ago. I just discovered this morning that it disabled Norton 360. It also removed CCLeaner, and turned off my Norton firewall. I have to reauthorize some other products but my main problem is that I don't know if I have antivirus anymore..
I try to turn Windows Defender on and it tells me that it is off but I have no option t turn it on. Norton wont open, is no longer on the bar at the bottom but is listed in "APPs", but like I said, wont open.
I tried to reinstall but I get a popup in the lower right telling me that Norton 360 wont run on this version of Windows.
It comes free with Comcast/Xfinity and has always worked well, until now. I did manage to turn the Windows firewall on. I set the default browser to EDGE, which I DO NOT like because it rearranges all of my favorites.
I cannot find an answer. I am just about ready to move to a MacBook for regular use. I have an offline computer for audio work. I have not upgraded it to W-10 and frankly I'm scared to. It has no antivirus because it has no email and very limited online use... ok, I digress.
What do I do to get Norton Working?
I posted the question on the Xfinity board and will on the Norton forums.

Thanks for any help.

J

A:Norton 360 wont run on this version of Windows... (update 1511 10586.3

I fixed it, took most of the day. I finally rolled back to the earlier version of Windows. CCleaner came back BUT I checked, Norton had not scanned my system since 9/29/15!!! Prior to that it was scanning regularly I had not noticed. I am NOT happy with Windows-10. I've about had it. I'm about ready to get a MacBook for the web and keep my DAW on Windows. I hardly ever go online with it and it doesn't have anything on it except recording programs, Acronis, and a few other things.
I feel like dealing with MS is like dealing with the government, I just don't like the whole attitude of "WE Updated Your PC".. They shuld have said "You Updated Your PC"... small things like that matter, it shows their arrogance... and my files were NOT right where I left them.
OK.. thanks,
J
