'Fatal Error During Installation' appears when I try to open Office 20

Q: 'Fatal Error During Installation' appears when I try to open Office 20

Hello everyone,

I've been using all Office 2010 features (Word, Excel etc.) absolutely fine for years on my computer that runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, but suddenly from yesterday I've been unable to open anything - not any document saved on my desktop or through any shortcuts or folders. I haven't installed any recent programs or made any changes to my computer (that I know of).

When I try to open something in Office 2010 a Windows Installer box appears saying 'preparing to install' and then 'configuring Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010.' An error box then appears saying 'Fatal error during installation' and that's it.

I've checked my programs and I've got Office 2010 and Office Professional Plus 2010, but there's only the option to Change the Professional Plus version in the Uninstall or Change Program panel. However when I click Change on the Professional Plus version there's no option to repair it.

Should I try and uninstall Office 2010 and then reinstall it?

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question and if it's been answered elsewhere - I'm just worried that I won't ever be able to open my Word documents again!

Thank you very much for any help you can give me!

Hi Fishsticks13, welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Do you have both Office 2010 & Office 2010 Pro Plus installed. If that is so why do you need 2 versions of Office.

Have a look at this website for a possible fix. It does recommend uninstalling & reinstalling Office.

Hi everyone, I was hoping someone might be able to lend a hand
Basically my problem is as described in the title. Whenever I try to open a document I have saved, or powerpoint/word/excel individually, a series of boxes pop up in sequence.

First box says 'preparing to install' and quickly disappears.

Second box says 'Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Single Image 2010... Getting required information'.

This is then finally replaced with the 'Fatal error during installation' error.

This is on my 1.5 year old laptop running Windows 7. I've had Office 2010 on it since I bought the laptop, but it's only now decided to stop opening. I've tried manually uninstalling Office to try to reinstall Office, but I then get a 'Microsoft Office Professional 2010 uninstall did not complete successfully'.

If anybody knows anything about this and can offer some advice I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks very much.

A:'Fatal error during installation' when trying to open Office 2010

Since you are not able to uninstall Microsoft Office 2010 manually, a 3rd party uninstaller could easily get rid of it. Run Office 2010 Removal Tool and use it to uninstall Office 2010, manually. Then, re-install Office 2010, this should put things back to default.

I recently tried to install Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 on Windows XP but a problem occurred with the installation so I canceled and postponed it for a while.

The problem now is, every time I open anything on Windows XP (any folder, HDD, C:, D:, recycle bin, control panel, etc.), a dialogue box appears saying: "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007
. . ." with a cancel button on the bottom right. I have to press cancel every time and it gets really annoying. Also, I don't want to install Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 anymore. I don't know why that weird thing happens since I'm not opening a Word/MS Office document for it to prompt me to install it.

How do I get rid of that dialogue box?

At first it appears that the ASROCK conroe1333-D667 mainboard has problem and I replaced it with a completely new ASROCK walfdale1333-D667 mainboard. Then I started installing windows. After the CD copied all necessary files to HDD and computer reboot into GUI, the Fatal Error message appeared:

I couldn't get Windows to load, and since I had no data on the computer that I needed to recover, I reformated the hard drives to reinstall Windows XP. I couldn't find my original disks, so I bought a new XP disk. When I did the install, I got an error that says that no signature is present, the data is invalid, and has the error code 800b0100.

A:Fatal Error during installation of Windows XP

Upon booting with the windows disk and going through those early steps, delete the partition, then start over by installing a new partition.
Then format the drive.
Once formatted, the rest of the install will take care of itself.
But spend some time to search for and download all the drivers, unless you have a complete set of the drivers for that model.

I am trying to delete some programs that require the internet to run, seeing how I disconnected my PC, there is no reason to have these programs installed.
There is this entry in add/remove programs called Showinfo.  It is apparently made by Linksador.
I couldn't find the installer file and the linksador folder in program files has a showinfo subfolder and is empty.   I even enabled show hidden folders to see if any folders were hidden.
Here is the problem.  The ShowInfo entry in add/remove programs is stuck there, and I can't seem to get rid of it.  It is gone everywhere else, except for in add/remove programs.  This has been there for a long time, long before the XP end of support date, and I would like to get rid of it to do some cleanup on my XP machine.
I also checked under regedit,
and I couldn't find the entry related to Linksador or ShowInfo.
Because of the end of support, this machine has been offline for a few months now.  If there are any fixes, I do not want to reconnect my PC to the internet.  If I need to download anything off the net, it would most likely be via another computer, which is clean, and transferred with a clean USB drive.

Hi. Usually i never post about such issues as i'm able to solve them myself or with bit of googling, but this is getting on my nerves. been messing with it for over 5 hours by now.

All this started that my Camtasia Studio 8 stopped launching, process just closed after i launched it. This is second time it happend, first time i restored some registry backup made by registry mechanic (even tho that backup was from the time it stopped working) and then magically it started working again, this time i never made any changes in registry.

So i used Revo Uninstaller pro to check what camtasia is doing and delete ALL registry values and files that camtasia installer have ever created. That didn't help either, so i thought that only thing that may cause this is .NET 4 (camtasia website says that .NET 4 is required for it to work).

sooo i uninstalled .NET 4 and everything related, cleaned registry ..etc
Now im unable to re-install .net 4.
I get the following error code: 0x80070643

Also if i go into windows features on/off and try to disable framework 3.5, it gives errors, says something like that "all the changes could not be made" and asks to reboot. after reboot, nothing's changed.

What i have tried:

1. Followed ALL the steps from this microsoft article:
.NET Framework update installation error: "0x80070643" or "0x643"

Hi Laxeyman, welcome to SevenForums!

From the looks of it, you're using a web installer (a small program which downloads more files to install once you run it). Is this correct?

You might try downloading the offline (complete) setup file instead. You can get it directly from here.

Try running this download and let us know if it works. If you still run into the same error, we'll go from there and find another solution.

Phooey! I had trouble with my Office 2007 and finally gave up on it, switching to LibreOffice. As might have been predicted, I'm quite frustrated with that on (although, give it credit, it *does* work!).

So I pulled out my Office 2000 CDs. I've had that on a Windows 7 machine before and am pretty sure it ought to be installable. But when I try, it fiddles and diddles for awhile and the starts with the error messages. After each, I clicked ignore (just to see what would happen) which took me to the next and finally culminated in a can't install-fatal error message.

There were four 1401 errors thusly: cannot create key ... be sure you have access ...

And then two 1406 errors: could not write value FileName to key ...

Then one 1402 error: could not open key ...

And finally, the fatal error: installation ended prematurely because of an error.

I have no idea where to start. Could my uninstalling Office 2007 have broken something? Do I need to uninstall LibreOffice before attempting this installation? Would it be smarter to expend my rapidly depleting energies re-installing Office 2007 ... seek help with its errors if necessary? I liked Office 2000 but I'll take the easiest route to get working again.

Thanks oh so much for any help.

A:Can't install Office 2000; seven errors then fatal error message

Office 2000 is getting pretty old now & is a security risk as MS don't supply updates or security protection any longer, so it would be best to reinstall Office 2007 again. Also you might experience problems with getting any documents & spreadsheets etc. you already have in Office 2007 to work in Office 2000.

Firstly you need to make sure that Office 2007 is completely uninstalled before you reinstall it again. To do that refer to this website.

Is it the issue with VC++ REDIST 2015 update1 not getting installed correctly? along with MS Office 2016?,but installation was fine without any errors
We tried reinstalling VC++ REDIST 2015 ,it can an option to repair and uninstall as if its already there and so we removed and tried installing again and got "Unspecified error "
Came to know for installing VC++ REDIST 2015 need to have a patch installed (Windows8.1-KB2999226-x86.msu),which is already available in MSOffice 2016 installation folder under hotfixes.
Tried manual installation of Windows8.1-KB2999226-x86.msu and it said this is not applicable to your machine
So forcefully installed this Windows8.1-KB2999226-x86.msu using DISM.exe command and it got installed.
And after the above patch installation installed VC++REDIT 2015 update1 successfully,
Tried launching Excel got the same error as mentioned earlier
Uninstalled Office and Reinstalled with REDIST already installed ,still same error on opening Excel etc
but only this VC REDIST will get installed, if we try VC++ REDIST normal setup without update1 it will give error ( we tried after removing the existing VC++ REDIST with update1)
Please suggest help how to fix ?,is it a com... Read more

Hi All,

This forum was recommended by a friend for honest and helpful answers. Hope someone can help me. I have only basic/medium computer skills so I have hit a wall with this problem. My laptop is hp and running windows 8.

I have received software from a friend via CD. The software is Trimble Terramodel 10.12 - Software used for surveying and other Civil Engineering functions. When I load the CD, locate the set.exe file, and run it, the installing gets to approx. 45% and then stops and a window displays the message
'Error: - 1603 Fatal error during installation
Consult Windows Installer help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information'

When I type the problem into google I am directed to download this, that, and the other to fix the problem which are obviously fake advertisements.

My question is:
1.) Is the setup file corrupted etc. and beyond repair?
2.) If file can be repaired, can someone with limited computer skills such as myself do this?

A:"Error. - 1603 Fatal Error during installation"

Hi pmitch123 and welcome to the forum! First question is this a copy or original CD? If a copy it could very well could be corrupted.

Also, make sure all drivers are up to date including graphics, BIOS too. I would then run a memory test and see how that goes.

You could try installing it in compatibility mode. Right click on the .exe and select "Troubleshoot compatibility".

I see it was made for older OS here: Installing Terramodel 10.12

FYI - I was not able to access your attachment.

Download/install/run <CCleaner> in my Signature. It's free.
Here is a tutorial, if you need it... CCleaner - Delete Junk Files
Sometime when an install fails, parts of the install program get left behind and ends up causing more problems.
CCleaner usually removes these program residuals.
Recommend uninstall the printer software and driver. Running CCleaner, then attempt reinstalling the printer software/driver.

As for your cartridge, last time I had that problem, I found removing the cartridge and reinserting it usually fixed the problem.

I am experiencing some problems loading the software I bought second-hand on ebay (which I am hoping isn't the reason I am having problems!) I wondered if any you could shed some light on this. I appreciate the item was not new, but I would have expected the installation to be fine. I have 'CD Key', which is a 11 digit number on the back of the installation disc. Should this be a 25 digit key to phone / contact MSoft with?

I did not uninstall the trial version of MS OFfice 2010 I already have on my lap top first. Should I do this?

The error messages are as follows:
1) "An error has occurred changing the workgroup database"
2) "Setup couldn't create a SYSTEM.MDW file. "
3) "After SEtup is completed, reboot your PC then run the workgroup Admin before you run this app (-1011)"
3) "vbe.dll was unable to register itself in the registry"

I hope one of you can help here or its £20 down the drain!

1. Try installing with McAfee disabled
If that fails have you followed this link

3. Providing you have the means to reinstall office 2010 - in case it goes wrong follow this procedure
If you have multiple versions of Office installed on the system then, uninstall all the versions of Office installed on the system, boot the system in clean boot mode and then try to install Office 2013 Professional Plus program and check:
Step 1:
Use the Microsoft Fixit tool to remove the older version of Office installed on the computer from the following article.

Note: In case you are using a 64-bit operating system, save the fixit tool on the system and then run it from the saved location.

Ensure you have the disc/download link and the product key to re-install Office.

Step 2:
Run the automated troubleshooter from the following article to remove all traces of the new Office installed on the system.
Once the uninstallation is complete reboot the system
Note: If you are using a 64-bit operating system, save the fixit tool on the system and then run it from the saved location.

Step 3:
Boot the system in clean boot and then try to install the Office 2013 program and check:
Clean boot is performed to disable all startup programs and 3rd party services on the machine and check if they are conflicting with the Office installation.

A:Error in Office 2010 Installation

There seems to be quite a few issues when trying to install the beta on systems that have or have had a previous version of Office on them. The only way I got it to install on my system was using a program called RipOutOffice2007, then going in and deleting all of the Office folders from my Program Files directories.

If you want to keep your 2007 install, then this is not a method you want to use. Hopefully someone can give you some advice on getting them running side by side.

I built a new computer this month and a couple of weeks ago I installed Office 365 with absolutely no problems. Today I uninstalled Office in the hopes that I could move it off my off SSD and on to my HDD. Turns out I don't think that's possible, but the real problem is I cannot get it to work at all anymore.

I log in online and enter my product key to install, download the 32 bit installer (which is recommended even for 64 Bit windows) and begin the install. As soon as the installation reaches 52% the following error message pops up:

If I close it it comes up again, and again. About 25 times. Then it stops appearing. It almost seems as if this error doesn't affect the installation because if I don't close the error message the percentage of the installation continues.

Once Office finishes installing none of the components will run. Not Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Onenote, Outlook or any executable in the installation folder at all.

The error message displayed for all of them is the same code:

I am using windows 7 ultimate and Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise edition. My problem started about a week ago when every time i would start up Word, a window would pop up stating that it needed to configure the program. the computer would then hang up and i would have to end the task. I decided to uninstall office 2007 from the computer and reinstall, but when i went into the programs listing to uninstall it could not complete the process. I went in and deleted all of the files on my own at that point (probably not a smart move). After that i tried to reinstall Office 2007 and it would get about two thirds of the way through and then the window stating "installation error cannot complete setup". I tried several different time and the same error occurred. Can anyone help me with this issue? I have to have office on my computer and the last thing in the world i want to do is reformat!

Hi there. I am writing to you about a problem I have recently faced. I tried to install a new copy Office 2003. During the install I receive an error message informing me that I have an internal error. This installation is off the Office 03 Disk.

You can see the error message below:

Below are the logs created from the failed install:

Internal error is usually an indication of a corrupt file you might say but I had to Windows XP's on a partitioned harddrive (C Drive and D Drive). The C Drive is my main and D Drive is back up.

I perfectly installed Office 03 in my D Drive but when I try to install it in my C Drive it fails.

Background Info:

C Drive is NFTS
D Drive is NFTS and is formmated with no data inside.

D Drive had a second XP installed and with this disk I installed Office 03 onto it.

Hopefully someone can help me in my situation.

Thankyou Hecta.

Machine is Toshiba L70-C-13c, Windows 10 Home, 64 Bit, Core I3, 8Gb, Toshiba 1TB Disk.

Originally, the primary problem was that ITunes wasn't syncing IPad. From Apple help, noticed that USB hub controller was not detected, and that Apple USB driver was not being activated. Simply wasn't there, after numerous fixes. Spoke to Apple, went up to them, they suggested doing reinstall of Windows

Notice from McAfee reports that administrator account wasn't complete, which was puzzling. It's a Toshiba disk, which I find notoriously unreliable.

Windows was restored. Restore took 7 hours, yip, suggesting something possibly wrong with the disk. It did do a clean disk, half through the operation, and after completed, reinstalled ITunes, iPad synced right away, with the Apple USB driver activating correctly, in the USB device hierarchy, shown in device manager, and disappearing after sync was completed. So the original problem was fixed.

Did a short DST test, and it came back OK Looked at SMART diagnostics and they were fine as well. So disk seems to be in good condition considered it only 12 months old and managed to install a bundle of software, which went in fine.

So we come to the 1603 error on install of Office 2013 x 64.

Worked the problem according to Microsoft. Enabled logging by setting up a config.xml and loading it on the command line. Verbose logging showed some error codes, below.

I've recently downloaded Office 2010 Professional Plus from the Microsoft Home Use Program. When I try to install it, the process encounters an error (actually crashes explorer.exe most times through the installation process) - the problem is, it doesn't specify an error code! I'm not overly computer savvy, so maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot, but the extractor doesn't seem to be extracting the setup files into my Temp folder and there is no log file located there for me to reference for an error code. I have lots of space on my drive (~30 GB), so setup should not be aborting due to space limitations. I'm running Windows 7 Professional and it is kept current according to Windows Update.

I've gone through the forums here and other Google sources and tried everything I could find from deleting old Office installations, to changing permissions, etc. Mind you, there isn't much troubleshooting information given that Office 2010 is still only early in its release - I can't even find the official Microsoft support site for the suite. My old installation of Office 2007 is deleted (folders and registry entries) and I've restarted many times, without effect.

I am not encountering any error when I try to install Project Professional 2010 or Vision Premium 2010 (they install and work fine).

Needless to say, I'm at a dead end in terms of knowing what to do next. Very much appreciate any assistance the more knowledgeable users can provide.

I surrender.

Updated to Win 10- received 2010 single image error- uninstalled Office 2010 with Fixit utility off of MS website,
Single Image error code- no longer a problem.
Tried to reinstall Office 2010 from CD- error code 1935.
- uninstalled / reinstalled nope.
- renamed Microsoft Help Folder- nope.
- re-installed Win 10 off of USB- nope.
- tried to install in compatibility mode for 8.1- nope.

I've ran CCleaner and Norton Utilities hoping they would clean out some left over garbage but that wasn't it.

I recently got a copy of Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007, but so far I haven't had any luck installing it. My first problem is that while my wife needs 2007 for school, I need a special plug in for work that is only compatible with 2000. A co-worker said that the easiest way to do it (at least for Office XP and 2003) is to simply install 07 to a different folder than the default. This way you'd still have both versions. After doing that, when I tried to open Word 2000, the Windows installer would come up, and "finish installing" office 2000. When I tried to open 2007, the same thing happened. So realizing that something had gone wrong, I looked around on the net and found that you're supposed to simply tell the 07 installer to the keep older version of office, and it should go fine. So I uninstalled 07, then opened 2K to see if it still worked, and got the error "This is not a valid Windows install package". Figuring the best thing to do was to uninstall both versions and start over, I tried that, but got that same error when I tried to uninstall it. Next I tried that feat of MS engineering, System Restore, to go back to a point before I tried installing anything, and while it claimed the restore was successful, I still got the invalid install package error. After trying a bunch of different things I finally got 2K working again, but when I tried to install 07 the correct way, at about 50% I get "Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 encountered an error ... Well, for some stupid reason, sometimes, office doesn't have the permission to create the folder on Start Menu. All you have to do is to create by yourself.

First Type C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs or Paste it on the Link up, on Navigation.
After that, just create a folder called Microsoft Office.

And then, your problem is gone.

My computer came with a demo version of Office Suite 2003 and I get this same error messae when I try to upgrade from that version too. Has anyone seen this before or know how to fix it?

A few months ago I tried installing Office 2007 Enterprise Edition and encountered the 1704 installation error. After many failed attempts, I let it go. I am now trying to install it again, as I prefer MS Office to Openoffice.

I have read many, many different posts regarding people being unable to install Office 2007 due to the 1704 error and have followed all the steps from the MS site on how to 'correct' this problem, but to no avail.

It's believed that the error is due to the <CONFIG.MSI> setting file attributes to READ ONLY which borks the installation. It's also believed that is caused by a hotfix/hotfixes. This makes sense since I had not installed Office previously on this installation, but had installed SP1 prior to attempting to install Office.

The problem that I have is that I still cannot find a fix for this. Does anyone actually know WHICH hotfix/es are causing this? Is there actually a work-around available?

Hi there,

at the moment i'm trying to install the sp2 for office 2010 64bit via windows update and it fails every time. During the installation it asks for the file ProPlusWW.msi and i'm pointing to the file in the x64-folder on the dvd. Shortly after that the installation quits with code 8024002D 'Unkown error in windows update' (see attachment).

PS: like the picture shows its a german installation

I hope somebody can help me

I also tried to install via downloading the sp2 (officesp2010-kb2687455-fullfile-x64-de-de.exe) but this fails also. The problem here is that it only shows a message box (Error during installation of the package.) without any code/error-number.

One of my clients was trying to install Office XP and got the error message: Error 25003. Microsoft Office setup cannot continue because the installation source has been corrupted.

I looked this up at Microsofts website and they recognize this as a problem and they say it occurs if:

You run Setup by using version of Office XP on a computer that does not have a qualifying Office upgrade product.
In the Product Compliance Check dialog box, you click the Drive list and then select your CD-ROM drive.
You eject the Office XP CD, insert the CD for a qualifying Office 97 or Office 2000 product, and then click OK.
After the qualifying product is detected, you continue the Office XP installation, with the CD for a qualifying Office product still in the drive.

To resolve they say to:
With the error message displayed on your computer, eject the Office 97 CD or Office 2000 CD from your CD-ROM drive.
Insert your Office XP CD.
First of all I could not find a compliance check dialog box.

Even if I could have, howvere, the client could find their Power Point 97 disc, but not the Word disc. (These were the only two office products installed.) They think Word came with their computer which only has a restore disk, not a separate Word disk.

I tried ejecting the Office XP disc ad inserting the CD for the Power Point 97 and nothing happened.

I ran the uninstall all office products by viewing the Office XP Cd and running the complete uninstall of all office products.

Got the same error.

Hi there, I had installed Office 2010 more than 6 months ago. Somehow two months ago, I receive the following message when I tried to open up the application (MSWord, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.):

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application even log for more detail."

I have not install any new application since I have installed the Office 2010, except Window Updates. I reinstall office 2007 and I have no problem running it.

I would appreciate any advice as how to resolve the above errors.

Hi, I'm using a Perl package (WriteExcel) to produce spreadsheets in XLS. It works very nice, though this is the situation.

One uses $workbook->write() [in Perl] to write things on the spreadsheets, so I write =VLOOKUP(B2,D5:E10,2), then with the same write() I fill the range with some values, also fill B2 with the searched value and that's all. It's a small 6KB XLS file

When I open the file in Open Office-Calc (like excel), it shows all correctly
If I open the same file in excel, there is a #value! error where the =VLOOKUP.. is.
If I F2+Enter at the cell where VLOOKUP is, the error disappears.
If I send -when filling out the XLS file with $workbook->write()- =VLOOKUP(B2&"",D5:E10,2) the error persits as well as if i replace the column number (2) by 1+1 or value(2).
If I open and save that file in Open Office and open it in Excel, the error disappears. The thing is I can not rely on this because the XLS file is supposed to be produced on the fly, downloaded from a web site by the user, to finally be opened in either Open Office or Excel.
What could be the reason for the error? The formula just looks the same before and after F2+Enter, It seems of course that Excel "feels" some value is in the wrong format, but so far no luck in putting the values in the expected format. Thanks for the help.

Sample file is at under name "cuanti--ello.xls"

A:Solved: #value! error in Excel but not in Open Office

I tried also sending the matrix first and then the other data, ending with the formula. It did not work either.

What did worked was to switch to a similar PHP library by Johann Hanne which is based (most likely debugged also) on the John McNamara's Perl module Spreadsheet::WriteExcel (

No "#value!" error is produced for the vlookup function.

Thanks for viewing and for best intentions in helping.

Hi All,

This problem is a bit difficult to give a title to.

OS is Win XP 2000 Home Ed

I have MS Office 2000 Professional. Disk one and two are installed.

(Have SP3 as well if that is relevent)

I visit the same chat site every now and again and EVERY TIME after applet initialised I get the following message:

"Insert the Microsoft Office Disk then Click Ok"

"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Error 1706 No Valid Source, Installer can't continue"

I have been clicking cancel, cancel cancel until it goes away.

Can someone tell me why its coming up and why it only happens with one site?

Its most annoying.

Any sensible help or suggestions would be great.

A:MS Office Prof Error when Applet Window is open

Without knowing what site, hard to say what that site is looking for. If Word is your default editor, it may be trying to load it to save chat sessions, but Word needs to install a conversion filter. Or it could be trying to access Outlook to send email/import addresses but Outlook is not installed, or also needs a filter.
What happens when you insert the Office 2000 disk and click OK?

Hi...if I've put this topic in the wrong place, please tell me and I'll shut it down and open a new one in the appropriate place.

Anyway, I know this particular error was my own fault and not a virus or anything, but I could use a hand fixing it.

I downloaded a couple of new extensions for Apache Open Office I wanted (good part).

(bad part): Stupidly hit "install extension" directly to the .zip files, without unzipping them first. Naturally, Open Office now says I have two versions of the same extension...the properly working, unzipped one I want and the original goof-up of mine.

Except hitting "Remove" for the bad one does nothing. Neither does uninstalling the good one and reinstalling it. (On the other hand, the bad notice doesn't seem to effect the good extension actually working just as I wanted it to...)

So how do I remove the bad extensions that say, "" for example? Without uninstalling and reinstalling the entire Open Office, I suppose?

Hello everyone, thanks for viewing.

So I logged onto my laptop to work on my university assignment some more, and poof, it won't open.
I keep getting the same error every time.

I can open the file in WordPad but I just get fifteen pages of ">:?:%<":?&:"
I can open it in OpenOffice but the formatting all changes, headers/footers disappear, images disappear, text boxes containing quotes aren't there.

I copied the Open Office version into a new blank Word page; and filled in the blanks (which took me an hour) but when I saved and opened the file; I got the same error.

Hoping it was me doing something wrong with the way I saved it or the default program to open it, I repeated the process taking up another hour; but I'd done it right, and got the same error code.

The default program to open it is Office 2003, the same format I made/saved the replacement file in.
It makes no sense to me. Also, why now? What changed? It was working fine yesterday.
Not done any downloads or scans so I don't know what the changed factor is.

Please can anyone help me, these assignments are dawning upon me and I need to get my finishing touches done before I can submit them, I also don't want to risk submitting a faulty file.

Thank you so much!

Hello, Recently, my system was found to be infected with malware and was removed with assistance from Moderators- Pizza and Pepsi/Boopme here in this forum. However, I'm not able to to update MS Office 2007 to service pack 3 and it may or may not be due to malware infection found in the system. Additionally, upon PC bootup, an error screen with Window XP Advanced options Menu shows up every time. It must be noted that I'm able to logon to Windows XP in Normal mode without any issues. Malware infections detected by MBAM and ESETSCan were RECYCLERS- Rogue.FakeAV and Win32/MessengerPlus.A application variant. They were quarantined and removed successfully. What do you have the installation media on...a USB drive, a DVD, etc?

Possible maybe the downloads were corrupt? Try downloading one again and try that one. Or stick on different device USB, DVD, drive, etc..and try.

Also might scan your HDD/SSD you're trying to install it to for any possible defects.

I did an upgrade installation from Office 2003 PRO to Office 2010 PRO. I had several issues with Access denied on C:\Config.msi. I usually select retry and all is well. I think I may have missed one of the retries before I did the system restart.
Now I get an error 2203 whenever I reboot, and the Office 2003 installer keeps popping up anytime I try to do anything.
I tried uninstalling Office 2003 and was told that I had a corrupted install. I tried re-installing it and it seems to just hang.
I also tried to uninstall and repair Office 2010.

I'm at a loss at this point.
