Connection Issues with Netgear Router that have Private IP

Q: Connection Issues with Netgear Router that have Private IP

Hey everyone,

This forum has always been helpful to me by answering the little stuff. Let's test it's limits

One of my clients has a Windstream Router that gives off the IP Address 192.168.3.X. So the default gateway for our network always has to be 192.168.3.1. All hardwired computers need to have a 192.168.3.X IP. I would like this to happen with all wireless devices. I know this is possible as I have gotten close to that goal, but not perfect. This is a mystery that I need solved by smarter networking minds. I have tried Windstream support (somewhat helpful) and Netgear Support (not helpful). Here's the story:

About six months ago my clients wanted to set up Wireless. So I put in the two netgear routers with IP Addresses of 192.168.1.X one downstairs and one upstairs and all was good. Until they started to use the wireless devices more. They needed scanning, access to shared folders on our the private network and remote services...

So for the past few months I have managed to get these netgear boxes working on the network. I did this by going into the settings and setting their default gateway to 192.168.3.1 and that they would give off the IP addresses instead of the Windstream box. This appeared to work fine for a few months. Until we gave them more bandwidth so that they could use their Remote Services faster. Now there are intermittent connectivity issues, Outlook disconnects, Remote Desktop constantly kicks users out, and internet is slow (not sure if that is part of the problem). I have tried changing the Netgear Router Gateway to something other than 192.168.3.1 but that never works.

Our ISP Windstream does not like to help us set up other devices on their network. They are useless to me here. They did however note, that there have been some IP conflict issues, which may have to do with the 192.168.3.1 gateway. Netgear said it was impossible to what I am hoping to achieve. I really don't think it is the case, and that the Indian script reader on the other end just didn't understand the technical side of what I wanted to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciate because I am banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why something so simple should be so hard to achieve. Basically I want to be able to login to the netgear router as I go to 192.168.3.X. X being whatever number the router is statically assigned. As of this point I can only access the netgear router login by going to 192.168.1.1. Every other configuration goes to page cannot be displayed.

Again thanks for any expertise you guys can throw my way.

A: Connection Issues with Netgear Router that have Private IP

If I understand what you're trying to do, set the wireless routers up on the main 191.168.3.x network, and run ethernet to the main router from their LAN, not WAN, ports. You may have to use a crossover type wire. It's the main router that will do all the DHCP work. The secondary routers are functioning as a wireless switch. O/S windows vista. I am trying to connect to the wireless internet through the Netgear router my roommates have at my new place. All of their devices work using the passphrase, but when I try to connect, in my network and sharing center it says that it is connected to their network (which shows up as unidentified) but not connected to the internet. I have tried resetting the router, as well as unplugging it and plugging it back in. When I called Netgear, they said they could fix it, but that I would have to enroll in their $150 per year tech support plan. Any free fixes?

Have you checked your network connections are all set to Auto:

Code:
Start>>Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center
Then:

Code:
Top Left >Change Adaptor Settings
Select: Wireless Adaptor>>right click and select properties

Highlight
Code:
Internet Protocol Version4 (TCP/IP)
:

Select properties and make sure that:

Code:
Obtain Ip Address Automatically
Is selected
and also

Code:
Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically
Is selected

Worth a shot, but post back if the above is already in the preferred state.

Hi! I have a wired Ethernet connection between a PC and a Mac (is that the issue?), and when locally hosted servers (on PC) are hosted, I get issues, but mainly issues binding to ports. Is the issue that I am not using a router or something like that?

Hi people
I've had problems with this router for a few weeks now, I can't get Firefox, Chrome nor IE7 pages to load most of the time, it's pretty hit and miss, only Aol will start. I've constantly reset it,I've tried pinging the router but get the message "it's not recognized as an internal or external command, programme or batch file" I've contacted Netgear but unfortunately I end up in an indian call centre and don't understand them quite well, nor have they been able to solve this issue as they just got me to do what I've already tried.
I've tried repairing the Local area connection, sometimes I can access the browsers but more often than not I have to reboot beforehand. I'm using XP btw.
I'm technically challenged and have just followed instructions via Google, seemingly I've tried most things still to no avail, anyone help me please?

Hi all...

I'm a n00b here, and I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, so please admonish at will

It's not really a broadband issue, but most definitely a networking issue, and my setup is as follows:
a NetGear DG834GT DSL modem and Wi-Fi router
2x Acer Travelmate laptops running XP Pro SP3 connecting through WiFi
2x XP Pro SP3 desktop PCs, one connecting through a NetGear wireless USB dongle, the other direct to the router via Cat5
All machines are set to resolve IP addresses automatically from the router via DHCP, but each machine has a static IP assigned to it on the router

All machines work perfectly, except for the one connecting directly via Cat5. On reboot, it takes forever (well, it varies from between 10 minutes to up to an hour) for the router to recognise the machine hostname. On the attached devices on the router management page, it displays the correct IP and MAC address for the machine, but the host name is not resolved correctly - it displays "UNKNOWN". However, as soon as the machine is booted up, it can access the internet through the router no problem.

I've tried everything (including backup, format, reinstall), installing a new power supply (the old one was tired anyway and causing trouble), and fiddled around with DhcpNodeType settings in the registry, among others. And it's also not a virus or some other malware - I've run all the scans.

Can anyone suggest another angle of attack, or possibl... Read more

A:Hi, and NetGear router (or XP) issues

As a test, boot this machine in Safe Mode with Networking and see if the same symptoms exist. This sounds like something running on the machine, I'd like to see if a safe boot will come up right away.

I'd also like to see the following from the problem machine right after a normal boot when it's not recognized, and again after it's recovered and working normally.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I have a Netgear router (WNR3400 N600) that keeps dropping signals on the 2.4 Ghz radio but not the 5 GHz channel. I've had the router for about a year. It replaced another Netgear router that did the same thing. The firmware is up to date, so my thought is the radio has gone bad, but I have no idea. If this works right, I've posted a screenshot of inSSIDer 2.1's time graph. You'll notice the thick line (the 5 GHz channel) is stable. It's the 2.4 that keeps plunging. I added the guest network (2.4) just to see what it does, and it acts the same. The top two lines are the 2.4 GHz signals, the standard SSID and the guest network. The thicker line is the 5GHz signal, and the lower line is the 2.4 GHz extender used to get the signal to the farthest part of the house.

My plan is to replace the router, but I thought I'd ask in case it's some settings I can adjust (but I doubt it). Thanks.

All,

I am having the same problem with the exact same modem. When I am trying to actually login into the router to actually set up the router, I constantly get the same error connection has timed out. It should also be noted that I have also reset both routers numerous times etc, all to no avail.

I had an issue where two of my laptops would not connect to specific web sites on the internet. I use AOL as the provider but use firefox as my browser. I also use a Netgear DG384n wireless router.

After finding a post on this forum I now have everything back up and running. Its a very simple fix but was hard to locate the problem.

Below is the post that I followed to solve my problem. I hope this helps you all.

reset MTU setting value
Try this for a simple solution, log onto router settings and select Wan settings and change MTU to 1396 (but remeber original number in case it doesn't work) click apply, try to log onto paypal.
I had 2 computers wired to router, both stopped working at the same time. I guess ISP have changed something their end.

I just done this after a month without paypal access, and bingo today I'm back on line with them. Hope this brings an end to your problems. I am with AOL and use a netgear dg834n router, simple solution without having to reset anything major. I have no idea why this works but I stumbled across this solution on an ebay forum and thought it only right to pass it on. followed.

Cable Modem is fine.
Wireless Router is fine with Modem.
I am able to connect to the web/email via ethernet cable thru the Cable Modem.
Called tech support via cable modem (internet provider) and they said Cable Modem and Wireless Router are communicating fine with eachother.

Called Netgear....boy were they helpful NOT! They said that hardware wise the Wireless Router is good to go....so then they said get on their website and pay up the wazoo for an email that will give me step by step instructions to figure out why I can't get my friends 3 computers (1 tower and 2 laptops) to connect to the internet and send/receive email.

SO - what up???? I have re-set and rebooted until everything is spick and span! There is nothing left to do but bow down to you super duper smarty pants that always get me set straight - your awsome at this!

If anyone can help us figure this problem out, it would be greatly appreciated!

We recently update switched over our cable internet (provided by Comcast) over to DHCP...we got an e-mail from Comast saying that we had to. After switching the internet over, our Router stopped working.

The cable modem works perfectly fine when hooked directly to the cable outlet, but we have tried everything we could think of (including formatting hard drives on two computes, and reloading Windows XP on both!) to try and solve the problem.

Does anyone know what can be done to update the Netgear WGR614 v6 router to work with DHCP? We found directions on a forum that the poster said worked great, but we are unable to ping the Router Admin at http://192.168.1.1. If we could access that site, I'm sure the directions we got would work. Is there any reason why we cannot access "http://192.168.1.1"?

Thanks!

I have a Paradyne DSL modem connected to a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. This set-up has been working great for over a year.

A couple of weeks ago, my DSL (or so I thought) quit working while I was using it. No big deal, I just let it be, thinking it would be up the next day. Next day, same thing, so I started the normal troubleshooting. Everything looked like it should, so I connected directly to the DSL modem and everything worked fine. I decided my Netgear had bit the dust, even though everything looked good. I tried another router and had the same results, so I purchased a new Netgear because I wasn't sure of the configurations for the second router. Same thing.

In order to connect the modem directly to the computer, I have to enter the IP, Gateway and DNS numbers in my PC, so I know my numbers are still valid. Any ideas as to why my DSL will no longer work through a router? I can access the routers internal configuration from my pc, so I know the connection between those two are good. When I set the Netgear back to factory defaults, it was able to detect what type of connection I have, so I assume the connection between the modem and the Netgear is good. I tried disabling my firewall temporarily. I am at a loss as to what to try next. I know several people who have the exact set-up at their homes and are working fine.

The troubleshooting was performed on my wired Windows XP Home desktop; however, I also tried wireless with my Windows XP Professional laptop.

Hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me with an issue in having. I have a Netgear wireless router (can't remember model, CGD or CGN something I think) and I'd like to set up a wired connection, the PC is right next to the router/modem and I'd enjoy having the slightly better download speeds with wired however, just plugging in an ethernet cable does nothing (surprise surprise). When I first tried I got Error 651, by fixing up the drivers with a Vista one I got past that but now I'm getting Error 797, I'm stuck here, I have no idea what to do. Any help?

A:Can I use a Netgear router for a wired connection?

Try to access the routers setting page over the wireless, usually for netgear its 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1, and log in using your user and password given to you. Some routers (especically Netgear) will disable ethernet ports unless you specify otherwise for whatever reason. Ususally there is a setting in the router control panel to enable them. Wish you luck

I have a dell Latitude 800 with the built in Intel PRO Wirelss LAN 2100 card.

At work the card works fine with the linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router at the office. No problems at all.

I purchased the netgear MR814 wireless router for home use. I have 2 other non wireless PC's on my home network that work fine on the switch of the new netgear wireless router. I created a connection for the new wireless network and did a scan and found the netgear wireless network with excellent signal. I am able to surf the web, check email etc fine at great speeds for about 10 minutes. Then the connection will drop from "excellent" to "Out of Range". I scan for the network and see it, but the connection stays on out of range. If power down the wireless router, and power it back up, connectivity is immediately restored, for about 10 minutes, then I have to reset it again. Note that my proximity to the netgear wireless during this testing is never more than 10 feet away in the same room.

I use the default router settings origionally. Then changed the default channel, changed the security settings etc, all configurations exhibited the same behavior.

Seeing as how the linksys works perfect, Im assuming its a problem with the netgear. Anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks

Ok. I just connected a Netgear WGR614v9 router and have been attempting to connect my son's Xbox to XBox Live through a wireless adapter.

I keep getting an MTU failure saying that I need to set the router to a MTU of at least 1364.

The router's factory default is 1500.

The Xbox is not the problem as I can leach off the neighbor's wireless network and connect just fine but the quality of the connection is very crappy.

I have read that I need to set-up Port Forwarding and Port Triggering and disable any firewalls. I've done as much as I can to no avail.

Port Triggering is giving me errors currently. I need to enter the outbound port number and I have no clue what it is or how to find it. The only assistance I've found from Microsoft is:

Firewall ports for Xbox LIVE and Windows Vista Certified Devices
Most broadband routers use Network Address Translation (NAT). Windows Internet Connection Sharing also uses NAT.

For most networking hardware that uses NAT, forwarding a network port from one network node to another network node (usually known as port forwarding or tunneling) is not required for your Xbox console to connect to Xbox LIVE. This is especially true if you use an Xbox LIVE - certified device. Port forwarding should only be necessary if you use a proxy server or a true firewall device instead of, or in addition to, NAT. Sometimes, you may have to configure port settings on a non-Xbox LIVE-certified router or gateway.

I am literally about to pull my hair out... I currently have a cable modem and a netgear wireless router N600, and about a month and a half ago I suddenly lost all signals. I have been on the phone with my cable co as well as Netgear, and they are both telling me that their equipment is fine. In the meantime I have purchased 2 additional routers thinking it was a router problem, neither of them worked as well. I also hooked both up to a completely different computer and still getting the same results. It seems to me that the modem and router are not "talking" to each other. I can get on the internet fine with just the modem, but it doesn't connect at all after I connect the router to the modem (I am able to get a wifi signal from the router on my phone, but no connection) If anyone can please help me ive explored every option I know to think of. I wonder who might be able to help me with WinMX.

I have browsed forums to get help. Everything is working with it through a router, but not optimally.

I have made a "Primary connection" to the network, and everything works, but it seems I'm connecting only to the "Open Nap Protocol Networks, but the MX network doesn't give me any search results?

Does anyone have a netgear router and has their settings right?

I would like the primary connection to connect to the MX network and give me the results of multiple users per file, but it's not doing that for some odd reason. You know, how there are collapsable files results of users with the plus sign in front of the file name? My searches are not giving any like that, and that is what I want to fix.

Hey Gang,
I have a Netgear WNR1000v3 router. I have two computers connected with a wired connection and a couple of different devices that I connect with using the wireless connection. (Phone, Laptop, Ipad). The wired connections work fine but the wireless connection will only connect to the internet for a very short time (seconds) and then drop off. If I wait long enough I will pick it back up again. But again, for only a very short time. I have tried all the reboot procedures without any success. If I reboot the laptop, Ipad, etc., that seems to get me a connection, again for a very short time. I've checked the lights on the router and everything there says its OK. It seems to have to difference how far I am from the router. I've put the computer right next to it without success. Is the router going bad? It's only about 4 months old. Because I don't use the wireless feature often, I can't tell you if it ever worked or not. It seems to me like I was able to keep a connection when I first hooked it up but I'm not sure.

A:Netgear Router Dropping Internet Connection

do you have any other devices near the router that could interfier with connection? anything else giving off a wireless signal, such as a cordless phone etc?
sometimes things like this can interfere with wireless signals coming from routers.

Other than that, Might be an idea to try and change the channel or your wireless signal coming from the router.

Greetings, My Laptop will not connect to my Netgear Router anymore today. It was working earlier (that's what mum said), and then it wouldn't connect anymore. All I get is the 6 bars that is grey with a yellow sun over it and under the Network Connections it say's its "Attempting to authenticate". I don't know what happen however last night the power went out for a couple of seconds so I don't know if that played a part or not but you can't rule out anything yet. Oh and I did a hard reset on the router and modem. I even went as far as to try advice I found on google but nothing worked. I tried deleting/uninstalling the wireless card under device manager and waited for it to restart but that didn't work. I even tried a system restore and that too didn't work. I also did the whole ipconfig /release, /renew, /flushdns and nothing worked. Before some people ask this question I will answer it: I did connect ethernet cable and it did work just fine. So I'm thinking its more of the wireless card that is messing up or something like that because I can connect using the Ethernet port. I am at a lost of what I can do now. Thanks for the help to all those who reply.

A:Wireless connection not connecting to Router (Netgear)

I did another test in which I used a USB Wireless adapter (54Mbps), and It didn't want to connect. So I'm now pretty sure its a Router problem but I don't see how that could be because I did a hard reset and I did backup recovery before I did a reset so I can restore it.

Here is an image from Xiirus Wi-Fi Inspector. Please note I did change the Channel to 8 after I noticed that someone else was also on that channel.

Hello all,

I have a Netgear wgr614v7 wireless router that has been working perfectly for a couple weeks now, but I have suddenly run into a problem. When I try to connect with my Macbook, it says "network timed out". Before, I was able to connect all three without any problems.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

I have a NetGear FWG114P Router with a desktop PC, an IOMEGA backup drive, and printer all pugged directly into the router. I also have a Dell laptop with XP SP2 and a NetGear wireless G card. The router drops the connection to the laptop very frequently. The connection to the desktop and the printer have no issues and the connection going from the laptop to the router is fine. The only way to restore the connection is to re-boot the laptop or the router. I have tried everything to eliminate the problem as it has lasted for several years. Upgrading the firmware on the router, buying a new 5.8Ghz phone, and installing a more powerful antenna to boost the signal, have not made a difference. The signal strength is consistantly strong, so I know that is not the issue. Recently I tried something that did work but I do not understand why. I keep a browser session open to maintain a connection from the laptop to the Router - specifically when I boot up the laptop I login to the router and keep it logged in the entire time I am on the laptop. That way my connection to the router does not drop. I would much rather find the real cause of this problem. Any ideas?

A:NETGEAR Router drops wireless connection

It seems that no one ever responded to your post. However, I can vouch for exactly your experience. I bought my FWG114P after my previous FM114P failed suddenly after about 3 years. I wasn't happy about it failing but it was reliable as long as it ran. But the FWG114P is anything but reliable. I'm on my first replacement now and it drops the wireless signal randomly and for random periods of time just like the first one did (it does seem to come back of its own accord most of the time, without a computer or router reboot). I have given up trying to get Netgear to admit that there is some fundamental problem with the wireless function of this device, basically because I don't want to hear them tell me one more time that it must be interference (obviously interference that just happened to start when I bought the first FWG114P!). Even pointing them to various forums where people are complaining about exactly this problem doesn't seem to make any difference! I haven't bothered getting a third machine because I know it will have the same problem. Yes, it's disappointing and frustrating.

Hello everyone. I'm using a G54 Netgear WG111 Wireless USB Adapter (I'm only going by what the box says). It works most days but there have been problems with getting on certain sites. I tried to get on Twitter and the internet connection just turns off. At first I thought it was my wireless router (I use a Verizon SCH-LC11 4GLTE) but my sister-in-law was able to access any site from her Laptop (All I know about it is that it is a Mini with built-in WiFi and has Windows 7).

So, my question is can someone help me with my problems. As of late, it disconnects when I get on a website to many times as it disconnected me after I tried to get onto my colleges website to check my exams (which is VERY frustrating as I had to use a proxy site just to check). I've notice that it allows me access the website if I don't mess with the website for a few days. Thanks!

Hey, maybe you folks can help me with this.

My girlfriend's computer keeps losing the connection to our Netgear WPN824 wireless router ("RangeMax," so called). The comp will disconnect from the network and be unable to reconnect for a short while. By contrast, my laptop running XP has never had any connectivity issues whatsoever. I'm not so familiar with Vista so I can't help her with her problem-- if, in fact, it's the OS that's the problem at all.

A:Netgear wireless router Vista compatibility issues?

In that ipconfig /all the wireless did not have an IP assigned by the router's Dhcp server. But, it does successfully connect at least sometimes?

Many wireless problems with Vista are driver issues, so the first thing to do is to make sure she has the latest wireless driver from the PC manufacturer's web site.

Happy new year to all and thanks in advance for any assistance.

I live in a Victorian Maisonette and have issues with internet speed.

I have the following setup: Virgin media 10mb - Modem and Netgear N Router. - In home office

I have no issues with speed in the home office, kitchen or bedroom but in the furthest away, living room (only 30-35ft away but 3 Victorian walls in the way) I have issues with connectivity and a speed test gives me approx 2mb download, when usually I get 10mb.

I also have a PS3, 360, Smart TV and laptop on this room all with connectivity issues.

I have 2 questions please:

- Is this signal problem normal? I also tried a Belkin N1 Router

- How can I fix this? I don't mind additional expense, within reason.

I was thinking about 2 powerline adapters and another router in the living room?

I also have the following equipment spare if this helps:

- Belkin N1 Router

- Belkin Wireless G Range Extender/Repeater (tried to configure but without joy)

- 1 working Belkin Powerline adapter (the other seems faulty - all 3 lights constantly flash.
Many thanks again!!

I have a network with three computers:

1) XP Laptop connected via ethernet cable to the Netgear WPNT834 RangeMax 240 wireless Router - it connects to the internet, works fine. Even when I use a Microsoft wireless card (model MN-520).

2) XP compaq laptop with Linksys wireless-G Notebook Adapter with RangeBooster (WPC54GR) - it connects to the internet, works fine.

3) the problem one:
XP Computer with Linksys PCI Adapter (model WMP54G) wireless card. It can see and connect to the WEP enabled network (SSID available). I can confirm this by seeing the 'connection' on the "view wireless networks" list.

HOWEVER:
I can NOT connect to the internet with either IE or Mozilla's Firefox. The connection is intermitent at best.

I tried the Microsoft utilities to create a broadband connection, etc. and it does not work.

What to I need to do to have this computer (#3) finally connect to the internet with its wireless adapter via the Netgear RangeMax router?

Many thanks for your help. Please, try to provide details as I am not too technical.

Thank you!

A:Connection problem NETGEAR ROUTER and Linksys PCI card

First determine if the problem PC is really communicating with the router.

To open a Command Window: Start - Run – cmd (command in 98SE) - OK

To determine a computer's IP address and router's IP address: open a Command Window and type
ipconfig /all

The "Gateway" is the router's IP address.

Now for some troubleshooting:

1. On the PC open a Command window and type
ping IProuter (where IProuter is the IP address of the router)

Do you get Replies, or do you get packets lost?

If you got all packets lost, your PC and router are not communicating. Very likely an encryption problem. Try w/o encryption.

2. If you got replies, try
ping 216.109.112.135

3. If you got replies, you have internet access, and then try\
ping www.yahoo.com

If you get replies again, DNS is working, and you probably have a Winsock problem.

Hi - my first post so please be kind. I have searched for a previous answer, but similar ones all seem more complex problems than mine!

I am running XP on my PC and connecting to the Internet with a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router DG834G v3.

Most of the time it is fine (and it also runs a second PC upstairs through the wireless network OK).

Then about once or twice a day, the Internet light goes from green to orange, flashing on and off for about 10 seconds, then off altogether for a few seconds, then flashing orange again and so on. At this point if I click on the Internet connection symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (task tray?) it tells me I am connected, but with no speed, and I can't access any websites.

If I try the connection diagnostics in XP, it tells me to check the wires, turn the modem off and on again, but when that doesn't work just tells me to contact my ISP.

Each time this has happened I have tried re-booting the PC, and tried turning the power to the router/modem off for a few minutes and back on, no luck, and then eventually, for no apparent reason, the link seems to recover itself and I am back online. (This morning it took about 30 minutes)

We get our Internet through overhead telephone wires (no cable out here in the sticks) and the best speed I ever show on teh connection status screen is 2.5Mbps, but often much less.

I suppose my real question is this: Is the problem likley to bewith my Router/modem? Or is ... Read more

Hi,

I bought a NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 but I don't get internet connect from it. I have a comast modem it's a RCA by THOMSON witch I can connect to the internet with a ethernet cable.

A:NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 No Internet Connection.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

recently joined Virgin Media with the complete package. The router they gave me is a Netgear VMDG480 Router with wireless connection. However, one of the laptops will not connect to the Internet. It fails to pick up the DNS even though the laptop can see the router and makes a connection. However, on making a connection it does not pick up a DNS.

This is odd because when connected wired it works a treat.

Here is the result from running ipconfig on the wireless adapter:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: [Blank]
Nothing for DCHP
IPv4 Address: 192.168.0.6
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Nothing for DCHP Server
Nothing for DNS Servers

This particular laptop runs Vista, and the other laptop that does work wirelessly uses XP Professional.

Does anyone have the answer to this problem?

Thanks

I have 7 devices connected to my Netgear Router 600/3700v2 and the devices keep disappearing. I believe I have found the solution. Connect to your Netgear Router (you will see BASIC and ADVANCED options) and select the ADVANCED settings. Click the tab below ADVANCED SETTINGS and in the drop down menu select UPnP. You will see on the top of the screen ADVERTISEMENT TIME TO LIVE - this setting DEFAULTS TO "4" which is okay for "normal" home use (well, it didn't work for me). This setting is what controls your attached devices. If you keep losing them, try increasing the settings until they remain visible. I tried 5 first - no go. Then I tried 8 and I haven't lost the devices since. Hope this works for you!

I have a Covad DSL modem and a Netgear wireless router. I had the internet connection set up using an ethernet cable connected to a desktop computer, with several wireless laptops on the network. Now my desktop has crashed (not worth fixing), so I set up the same connection on a laptop, but it is now tethered by the ethernet cable to the modem, and therefore anchored to a desk. Can I reconfigure to set up all computers in my home wirelessly, or must one always be connected with the ethernet cable? The laptop it is currently set up on is a hp pavilion with Windows Vista.

I recently added a Netgear wireless router(WNDR3400) to my Clearwire Modem and my ability to use the Desktop Remote Connection went Bye Bye. This is probably because I had to set my computer to DHCP to get the internet to work. Can any one help me with reestablishing the Remote Desktop Connection? I'm confused by the portforwarding. Do I need to forward the Clear modem to the router and the router to the computer. Do I set the router to Static IP and leave the Clear Modem to DHCP or do I need to set it to Static as well. Any help, Please?

A:Remote Desktop Connection thru Clear Modem and Netgear Router

You need to portforward (port 3389, I think) on the Netgear router to the computer. Best to assign a static IP, or use address reservation if the Dhcp server has that feature, for the computer.

A while back my company purchased a new router (NG FVS124G) as ours was getting dated (old sonicwall, but not relevant). We received it and used all the old settings from the existing router to get it working, but no luck. We could not get it to connect to the internet, our web server would not work, and our VPN does not work either. After much tinkering, by my manager still nothing. Finally in desparation he brought in his router from home (LS WRT54G) so at least we could get up and running again. Again he loaded the old settings, and bam everything works Internet, Web Server, and VPN.

I have just recently inherited this problem, in a desperate attempt to get a more secure network going. So, this all leads to my question how is it possible the with the exact same settings one router works (WRT54G) and the other (FVS124G) does not?

We are using a static IP address.
Yes, i double, triple, quadruple checked that it all matches.
All ports that are need are allowed (as far as i know).

Any ideas?

A:Linksys WRT54G and Netgear FVS124G Router connection problem

From what I am seeing, you need to set the allowed ports and protocols
in the firewall setup in order to get traffic through the WAN.
The lynksys doesn't have this extensive protection.
Pobably just has virtual server and dmz.
You may want to check the manual on setting up WAN traffic
through the firewall.

You can connect/configure it as an ethernet switch (if it has multiple LAN ports) and wireless access point, but you cannot use it as a router except with ADSL internet service.

Thing is, when I try to access the web gui I receive nothing.. Is the Netgear firewall taking priority or something? I went directly connected to the netgear wifi router and double checked to make sure that there was no settings restricting administration from wifi users, etc.. Anyone have a similar setup ?

Thanks All

You sure been busy! Have "seen" you all over this place.

Is the FVS318G router connected to the N600 router's WAN port or a LAN port?

If WAN have you changed one of the routers so that they don't both use the same LAN subnet (I didn't check each one, but they probably both default to the same).

If LAN have you disabled the N600's Dhcp server?

The instructions also I can use any wireless network manager utility to set this up. Can't find where this is in Windows 7.

The I pad has found the NETGEAR_EXT address but won't connect. And the light on the extender does no indicate teh router is communicating with it.

(Sorry, I just edited this because I realized the title said Wireless Router, it's actually a gateway. Can't fix it.)

I have a Netgear CGD24G Wireless Gateway and a Gateway MA8 laptop with after-market Windows 7 (Vista got a virus, went ahead and upgraded.)

Now, when I download 100 MB files on my Xbox 360 (Which is wired to the modem) it will be downloaded in a couple minutes, or less. The other computers in my house (There are plenty, and even more that come and go.) get a blazing internet connection, and most of them are wireless. Now this computer, which had an extremely quick connection as well all of a sudden dropped off, while the rest of the computers remain fast.

I've gone to Speedtest.net before and after this occurred and my speed before was around 12 mb/s, and one time around 4 AM was even upward of 25 mb/s, all of these tests were performed multiple times on different server locations.

I JUST did the speedtest, and it came back with .4 mb/s, and the UL speed was 2.0. I honestly can't remember what I averaged with it prior to the problem, but it was definitely higher as well.

This started happening a little less than a week ago, and I've downloaded/changed nothing major with the computer, and have mainly used it for light browsing, and an occasional download.

Also, this is mainly just a hobby fix. I have a long enough cable to wire the computer straight to the gateway, so I really don't want to buy new hardware or anything of t... Read more

All was working fine (i could connect on both channels) until i needed to access the settings page and i had forgot my password so i reset the router.

When i now try and connect my laptop cannot see the Name (11N SSID), only Name (11G SSID). The router lights have the 2.4 GHz as orange and 5 GHz as blue. My sky anytime box only sees the Name (11G SSID). The strange thing is my ipad can see both channels.

The router is set for up to 300Mbps at 5 GHz & 54Mbps at 2.4 GHz.
If I set the router for up tp 300Mbps at 2.4 GHz only the laptop can see the Name (11N SSID) but when I try to connect the security is not recognized.

I canít work out whatís going so any help would be greatly appreciated?

Currently I am at a dorm with 30+ students and we've been having serious wireless connection and internet issues. Either our wireless has a capacity issue or the router itself does not have a strong enough signal.
Our current set up is using an Arris Touchstone Telephony Modem connect to a SMC Comast Business class router. This is then connected to a 48 port D link switch which connects everyone in the house to the wired network. Our wireless router is an Engenius eap350 router which is currently connected to the business class router.
I'm considering getting a new router to manage 30+ devices, but if this is the solution, what router would be best for us?

I doubt that is possible if most of those devices are connecting by Wi-Fi, but if it is possible you can be sure it's not a typical home or small office router.

Hi guys and gals,

I'm having trouble getting wireless internet for some reason though it worked a few days ago. My modem works fine and I have internet when I hook up through the ethernet cord, but once I try to get the router involved, all the correct lights on the router and modem come on (except the modem's Activity light), but I can't get on the internet.

I think it may be something with my computer, perhaps a setting got changed somewhere. Does anyone know of a setting on my computer (HP pavilion) that I may have changed so that a wireless router wouldn't work? My modem is a Speedstream and my router is a Netgear WPN824. I've tried using Netgear's Setup Wizard but it didn't help.

For quite some time now my computer has been experiencing severe issues that keep me for connecting to the internet. What usually happens is a sudden drop in internet connection a few seconds after connection, from which it recovers saying "internet connection" but I still get stuck in resolving host.I know very little about networking and because of this I have not tried many solutions. First of all whenever this occurs I am completely unable to access webpages but I can still get to internet based programs such as Skype and games connecting to servers. Also I have tried connecting with a wired and wifi connection, as well as connecting both at the same time, and cannot access the internet through any. All the Apple computers in the house connect fine. When I connect my computer to the internet through my Iphone's hotspot I have no problem connecting but it seems as if the resolving host stage is much slower but this may very well just be my imagination. Before I posted this a day after I wrote this I came home and attempted to connect through my Iphone but was unable along with being unable to connect to an extender I can usually connect to. I have run a full scan with both ESET antivirus and Malwarebytes which have both found nothing. Any feedback would help.
P.S. I have a Ubee router
Thanks in advance!

Media Center won't download new guides, MalwareBytes can't update, nothing can really update because everything goes through IE. And if I try to open IE I get a page load error. It's not connecting to the web.

Here's another little tid bit. I found out that if I go to(Windows XP) "RightClick IE > Connections > Advanced > Lan Settings" that "use proxy server for your LAN" and "Bypass proxy for local adresses" are checked. If I uncheck those and check "Automatically detect settings" that IE starts working again.

Unfortunately that doesn't last very long. A few short minutes after that, my connection disconnects, and the "Alarm" light is on my DSL Modem/router and I have to type in my ip to the address bar, access the router configuration and hit "reset to original configuration"

Back to square one, as I have to reset the IE setting to the proxy check. If I don't, the router keeps getting the alarm light.

This started a few days ago, and I've noticed my computer acting funky. But MalwareByes and other things have old definitions and updates, about two months old.

This is quite aggravating and I'm at a loss to be honest.

Log on as an administrator, go Start > Run and type: "cmd". In the window that appears type: "netsh winsock reset". When the program is finished, you will receive the message: "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset." Close the command box and reboot your computer.Go Start > Run > type: "cmd" In the window that appears type: "ipconfig /flushdns". Close the command box.Go Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Reboot.Warning: Some Internet Service Providers need specific DNS settings. You need to make sure that you know if such DNS settings are required before you make this change.

Tried searching for a solution but couldn't find anything specific enough to my issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated; wired network connections.

ISSUE:
As of right now, I am able to connect to the internet but only directly from my modem to my main desktop. When I have the router connected... there is no network connection on anything connected to router, not even my main desktop. I then started to see if other devices such as PS3 and laptop would work connected directly to modem. No connection can be made; however, everything shows pc activity. The only connection i get to work is when my main desktop is connected directly to the modem. I believe it is a network settings issue, involving router and/or modem. I've tried doing the whole reset router/modem/pc, and disconnecting reconnecting cables solutions but nothing.

Thanks again for any responses and help.

So I just got a new internet company today because I moved, and I bought a router so my girlfriend can connect to the internet wirelessly on the other side of our new condo.

Well when I tried to go in and set it up;

Wire from Modem to Router into the "internet" slot on the back of the router.

Then I put cable "1" conected from the router to my computer.

Well at this point it was telling me I had connectivity but it wasn't recieving any packets band it wouldn't connect to the internet. I can't run the set up software either without the net working.

Any ideas?

3 days ago I bought a USR8003 router for my cable modem, everything was perfect, until the next day when I found myself without connection, I had to disconnect and connect the router again in order to restore the network. Im not sure where to start to solve the problem besides asking here.

I have comcast broadband, and without the router connected the internet never disconnects, so im pretty sure its the router. I have 2 computers hooked up to it, and they both have different IP's when i check IPconfig.

Does your router have the latest firmware installed?

When the disconnection occurs, is the router still operable? (Can you access the setup pages?)

Did you configure the router to reconnect automatically and never disconnect?

I have DSL through SBC Ameritech and networked to 3 computers using the Linksys BEFS41 Router. I also play Everquest frequently. I hold a connection for about 3 hours (it varies) and then disconnect for about 30 seconds. Everquest is very port-intesive and i have port-triggering set to 1024-9999.
my other settings are as follows:
Login: PPPoE
Advanced > Filters:
SPI - disabled
block wan requests - enabled
multicass pass - enable
IPSec pass - enable
PPTP pass - enable
all else is disabled

Also, aside from minor router tweaking my network card is very old. A friend from college gave it to me in 1996. He said if i didn't want it he was going to throw it away. There is a good chance it was already a few years old by then. How possible is this card contributing to the disconnects? I run a Asus A7V motherboard with a 800mhz Athalon processor.

Hello,

I have Shaw as an ISP (DSL) with a Motorola Modem and a Linksys WRT54G (v.5) router.

Now all computers are connected wirelessly, including printers and other devices. We have a standard WEP key just as a deterrent and the SSID is gray-network as to not conflict with neighbour's ssids.

The firmware is v.1.01.0 which, to the best of my knowledge, is the latest. The wireless channel is 10, which is apparently the least used channel therefore less likely to be disturbed.

I have spoken to a Linksys Technician and he was unable to resolve my problem.

The problem is as follows:

All computers will sporatically get disconnected from the router for a miniscule amount of time that no one can detect other than lag. But I, being a bit of a poweruser, listen or watch streamed media or play online games. These constant irrating "hiccups" in the internet connection can disconnect me entirely from what I am doing. Very frustrating.

Now after the episode has passed, I will get a famous pop-up bubble in my taskbar showing my connection details, as if I just connected to my network.

Can anyone help?

I recently got a new laptop, running Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. I've been having connectivity issues with the internet, and it doesn't seem to be related to the router, as the same issue happens on different wireless networks.

The majority of the time when I wake up my computer from sleep, it won't be automatically connecting to my home network, even though it's set to. When I try and connect, it does the whole "windows is taking an unusually long time to connect" deal. To solve it I usually go through troubleshoot. It doesn't find any problems (other than Hamachi IP issue, but this problem persisted before I downloaded Hamachi, and it doesn't seem to affect anything). Once troubleshoot finishes, it's usually about a minute or two later when it magically connects.

Sometimes the internet disconnects right in the middle of me doing something, and to solve this I usually turn the switch on the front to turn off all wireless, wait a few seconds and turn it back on, and this usually solves the problem, for the time being.

Another point that I might add, my computer came with Intel My Wifi Technology, and it currently says "Network Adapter Not Found", when I'm pretty sure it used to recognize an adapter. I'm not familiar with the program as it wasn't installed on my last system, so I'm not entirely sure about this one.

If you can provide any help, or need more information, please let me know!

A:Internet Connection Issues, Not router related

I'm assuming that the PC in question is a laptop. Do you have all the MS updates? Next would be to update your wireless adaptor manually, that is either from your PC's support/download web page or straight from the wireless adaptor venders web page.

I have multiple wireless devices that are able to connect to the router including a Fire TV stick.

My Levono Ideapad will NOT connect over wireless to the router using windows 8.1 but if I use Ubuntu on the same laptop it works.

Any suggestions to troubleshoot is appreciated.

A:Internet connection issues with new router and Windows 8.1

If you haven't already done this: control panel-->network and sharing center-->set up new connection or network-->broadband connection

in the dialogue you should be able to get by without filling in any passwords, unless your ISP did actually provide you with a password. You should also be able to ignore any limited connectivity warnings it gives you.

After you set up the new connection/network, you will have to select it as the one to use (also via the network and sharing center). Right now Windows is probably still trying to use your old router, even though it isn't hooked up anymore.

After that test and make sure you can browse, email and whatnot.

After trouble shooting on my own, I'm stuck. My current situation is that I have a Netopia (Cayman 3346) DSL modem-router (not wireless) that is connected to a (Linksys E100) wireless router. I currently run a small business that has two other computers connected through the Linksys router and are properly configured on the network.

Problems, Thursday night was the last time I could connect using the wireless connection. I cannot connect wirelessly now, but I can connect through the Netopia modem-router.

Manual Troubleshooting included:

-CMD for proper release/renew (IP shows 192.)
-Hard reset both modem and router.
-Manually configured the Linksys router.
-Called Netopia and manually configured modem-router successfully
-Again, computers hard-wired to modem-router will connect.
-Lights on Linksys router are lit and working properly (i.e wifi icon, power, and line 1)

Any ideas? I found in the Netopia settings of the WAN to be configured this way, should I change to IP Address?

Any help would be appreciated as my business is hindered by only having one computer operational.

EDIT: Here is a picture from the Netopia WAN configuration page

I have since managed to factory reset the Belkin router (Model F5D7632-4)and after disabling Zonealarm secruity suite on 1 of the PC's i have been able to connect it back to the network and gain access to the internet. However i can not get the second PC to connect back to the internet. I can see this machines ip address in the Router configuartion page and the PC itself seems to connect to the network since it has a ip adddress and other details.

I have tried disabeling firewalls and other software to see if this was interfering with the connection but it doesnt seem to have helped. Also i have tried typing ipconfig in the cmd prompt but i get an error message 'IPCONFIG is not recognized as an internal or external command'

I am really stuck as to what to try next so any suggestions would be great.

Hi everyone !

Last night I set up a home network for a friends house using a NETGEAR DG834G wireless router. The desktop is connected to the net through the ethernet cable no probs, and my laptop connects to the router wirelesly no problem in every room in the house.

Problem is my friends laptop which is a Compaq Presario (I forget model) cannot find the router. Instead it finds all the neighbour's routers ?!?!? even with the laptop sitting next to the router there is no detection. It is about one year old and running XP. On the Windows network setup it says the wireless chip on the Compaq is a Broadcom 802.116/g

I use Intel PROSet/Wireless to connect to it using my laptop, but my friends laptop has something called HP Wireless Assistant, which has basically no options other than telling you that the wireless technology is turned on.

I have turned off firewalls etc but it will not find the NETGEAR router ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

So here is my case:

SETUP:

Verizon's Westell 6100:
Modem/Router, provides 1 incoming address (provided by VZ) and provides 1 internal address (192.168.1.1).

Netgear Wireless Router WGT624 v4:
Wireless Router, accepts 192.168.1.1 and provides 10.0.0.X wired and wirelessly.

Problem:
Although Verizon's Router indicates that it is on Bridge mode, the damn thing isnt. I thought the main concept of bridging was to become practically invisible and automatically reroute all traffic to the next device, which is what I want.
I want to ultimately use the Netgear device to set all my rules and settings, instead, I have to do it on both.
For instance, Xbox Live is not working 100% properly. I can only play video games without being able to join specific games, or perform any in-game video/voice chat.

I have tried NATing the device. No luck.
I have also tried setting the Netgear device as a Wireless Base Station. Either way, I just would like to have my network ignore 1 device, and have the second one invisibly reroute all the access.

Is that possible? Could you please help?

Thanks to all!

A:Netgear Wireless Router and Westell Modem + Router = Routed Bridge failure

Well, since the "modem" is supplying a private IP address, it's obvious that it's not in bridge mode, that can only happen with a NAT layer, aka a router.

Try this solution to configure it for bridge mode, direct from Verizon: http://www22.verizon.com/residentialhelp/highspeed/networking/setup/questionsthree/123756.htm

The easiest way is to run the CD that should have come with the Router, if you havent got it then you will have to configure it manually.

Full instructions can be found on the netgear website here.

I have been trying to find a way to connect, forward the signal, recieve the signal from my Verizon Fios wireless router up to my WGT624 V3 Netgear router.

Is there a way that I can modify my wirless port on my Netgear to recieve a signal wirelessly from my Verizon Wireless router?

My Neighbor did it once with another wireless router, but he can not remember how he did it. I am thinking it had something to do with the Firmware.

If anyone can help me with this that would be great.

I'm basically trying to push the wireless signal from my Verizon router in my basement, up to my wireless Netgear router which is recieving the signal on the main level so that I can plug my wired (non wireless) laptop into the ethernet port which is receiving wireless signal from the Verizon router in the basement in order to gain access to the internet.

Can this be done with the equipment listed above and or some additional firmware and configuration?

Thank you for all your assistance on this in advance.

I have Qwest/CenturyLink DSL, and recently replaced the Actiontec M1000 modem which crapped out after 5 years of service. Replaced it with a Netgear DM111PSP v2 router/modem. Now I cannot get either of my two routers, the Linksys WRT54G or WRT160N V2 to broadcast wireless internet. I've spent the most time on the WRT160N. It will broadcast a wireless signal, but devices that attempt to connect to the internet time out while "obtaining IP address". BTW, I just happen to have two wireless routers on hand, I only need one to work.

I can get internet through the hard wire connection. I have the Netgear modem hooked up to the "internet" port of the WRT160N router, and the computer is connected to one of the four ethernet ports on the back of the router. I can access both router and modem setup pages using this setup. The Netgear modem is set up for DHCP server, PPPoA encapsulation, and gets its DNS address dynamically from the ISP. The WRT160N is also set up for automatic DHCP configuration. These are the settings given by running each set up wizard, and this has set me up for some DHCP conflicts.

I think that setting up a dual modem/router in transparent bridging mode (PPPoE) in theory turns off the DHCP, allowing the WRT160N to handle DHCP, but I have no luck even getting my hard-wired internet connection to work if I switch from PPPoA to PPPoE mode. Even if I cut the WRT160N out of the loop and connect the computer direct to the DM111PSP. No internet,... Read more

So I have AT&T DSL. I bought a Netgear N300 ADSL2+ Modem/WiFi Router that is compatible with my service.

Previously with this Modem/Router it would constantly drop the wireless connection for the Wii I have that was used to stream Netflix.

So recently I bought a Linksys E2500 Router so I could be able to use the Wii, along with 3 other desktops, 1 laptop, and 3 phones.

My ideal setup would be this:
Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Connect the Linksys Router to be what all the devices connect to wirelessly (this would serve as the DHCP server)
I have read that one of the Routers has to be set to "BRIDGED" mode, yet I don't know which device has to be Bridged

Hi,
I own a business that offers free Wi-Fi to customers. Originally I had the blue linksys wireless G router hooked up to the booster on the roof. At another location, I just got a Netgear wireless N router, and that worked way better than the linksys. So I got another Netgear router, and installed it in the first location- but I'd like to hook it up to the booster. The guy at Fry's said that the Netgear router will not hookup to the booster- I'd have to hook the Netgear to the linksys, disable something on the linksys, and then the linksys to the booster.
So, my question is, how do I do that?

Thank you very much!

After a series of computer and network failures, mostly due to electrical storms and electrical contractors, I decided to upgrade my old Netgear router to a new Netgear Wireless-N router.

I have used Network Magic to manage my networked computers and when I decided to upgrade NM, the new version didn't support my old router. So, it seemed like an all over upgrade/update was in order.

What should have been a simple process-- turn everything off, disconnect the old router, replace it with the new router, and go through the set up process (cable modem on, then router on, etc.) has turned into a mystery.

I used the Netgear startup wizard, followed step by step (more than once) and each time I got to the last part of the process, it stalled saying "No Router Found."
It was only after several unsuccessful attempts, that I decided to open my control panel and check things out. Network Connections showed my status as "connected," so I opened my browser and found that I am able to connect to the internet.

What I have not been able to do is to set up my network, network security, etc. I tried to initiate Network Magic for set up, with the same results-- "no router found."

Anyone know what I have going on here? Am I only connected through the LAN connection, perhaps?

Ok here's the situation:
I just moved into a student apartment. The internet is already activated and it is available through the RJ45 jack straight off the wall. Using an Ethernet cable I am able to use Internet without any issues with my PC.

What I want to do:
- Use my Buffalo ADSL router/modem to share the connection: both wired and wireless.
- Use my router as local DHCP to create a private network with my home devices.
- Be able to access both the internet and the router without having to unplug anything.

The setup:
- There is no way to use a DSL (phone) cablein the house so I have to plug the Ethernet cable carrying the connection in one of the LAN port of the router.
- My PC use another free LAN port.

The issues so far:
- I am only able to share the connection through the LAN ports of the router.
- Wireless devices are able to connect (it even read "Internet access" in the tray bar) but are unable to browse. It can't resolve proxy and always time out.
-When the Ethernet cable is plugged into the router, the router itself becomes unavailable. I'm assuming the connection has its own gateway somewhere else and prevents me from accessing the router.
- I effectively don't have any private network anymore.

edit: another weird thing I noticed. On my laptop anytime I try to connect to a wireless network it connects to 2 networks at the same time. One with the proper SSID and the other "Unidentified network"

Heres my dilemna, I have installed a netgear wireless router for me (Win2000) and a usb wireless nic card for another pc in the house, to share my internet connection. The router seems to be configured correctly, i have a cable internet connection so my router is configured for dhcp to get ip's from the cable connection my pc runs flawlessly, i also have inplace the necessary wireless security. But my issue is the other (Win98) wireless workstation, it can see my SSID on the network and my connection is reading at 65% but it doesnt seem to see the router i have the worstation configured for dhcp from the router but for some reason they dont see eachother I dont understand why? if i run ipcofig on the win98 pc i get a apipa address instead of a dhcp ip address that my router should be pushing out just like it does for my pc??? I think im missing a major step here but i cant see it...

I have searched several posts and I have had success setting up 2 routers, but both routers can see computers on the other ip which is what I was trying to prevent. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Here is what I have
Internet----Modem---Router 1 (public)----router 2 (private)
Router 1 has the IP of 192.168.2.1, subnet 255.255.255.0
Starting IP is 100 (192.168.1.100)

Router 2 has been setup with IP 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0
Router 2 internet IP 192.168.2.101
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.2.1
DNS 192.168.2.1

Like I said both routers work and I can get to the internet on either IP via LAN or Wireless.
The problem I have is if my son connects to the public wifi he can access all the computers on the private IP.
I would like to have both routers to have wifi and LAN capabilities, but of course separate and secure of each other.
I guess I should also note that I set the private router to 192.168.1.1 so that I don't have to reprogram all the other devices that were already on my previous network with static IP addresses.

Note sure where I went wrong????
Windows 7 or Windows Vista computers.
Both are Linksys routers.
Thanks!

I have a dual band router which I run with two SSIDS one for the 2.4GHz band (gaudi) and one for the 5GHz band (gaudi-5G). It also has ethernet ports.

A laptop I just built has connected OK to gaudi-5G and the ethernet and recognises them both as one network which W10 has called "gaudi-5G".

The problem is that when connected to gaudi, that is shown as a separate network (called "gaudi") which is public and what's worse there seems no way to merge this into the gaudi-5G network (preferred) nor to make it private network (not so keen on this option).

Help!

Cheers
Dave

I'm living in a house with 6 roomates and we are all connected to one wireless router. I was wandering if we could make the connection private so only we can connect to it. The router is a Belkin model num: F5D6231-4. Thanks in advance.

A:Making a wireless router private??

To secure the router's configuration pages, assign a login password.

To secure the wireless network enable WPA-PSK encryption with a passphrase of 20+ letters and numbers mixed. If somebody has an old adapter that does not support WPA, even with a driver update, at least use 128-bit WEP with a good hex key.

Hi folks
Increasingly Hotels etc are charging extra for their wifi if you have more than one connection in the room

Well using a portable router creates your own private wifi network which you can share with other people / devices -- this one also has 5GHZ capability so max throughput from Hotel wifi is 433 Mib/s. Create private network from single source !!! - just pay once (or have the single FREE connection and create wifi network !!!).

You can connect to the LAN as well and create wifi network -- a lot of laptops now don't have LAN ports any more.

Great piece of kit -- I use also at public wifi outlets too as it's secure rather than rely on public wifi security (i.e none) and will hobble those "shifty characters" who try and use public wifi to steal passwords etc etc.

Great also for supporting DLNA servers so you can show your own movies on Hotel TV etc. Has 3 usb slots so can share HDD's over the wifi network too.

DIR-510L Wireless AC750 Portable Router and Charger | D-Link

Brilliant piece of kit -- not too large ---Don't leave home without it.

A:Portable Router for private wifi etc

Jimbo there is always the Raspberry Pi 3 TOR that has been working great for those who travel.

It is probably the best little gadget to come around.

Alphanumeric and I are both playing around with that unit to see what it can do.

hi,
Can any one give answer for my question, Q) When setting up a private network of 5 PCs behind an Internet Router, what IP address ranges have been reserved for such use. Which would you pick, and why?
Thank You

I am on a wireless network that uses public IPs for internet access, but on that same network carrying the internet service is a private network that we use to monitor and configure the wireless radios.
If I'm plugged into the radio directly I can set a route to 169.254.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 and can get to the radio. But I am now behind a netgear router.
So... My question is this. What do I have to do to view the private network now?
I already have a route set on the PC to the network and it is persistent. What are the correct settings on the router?

Whenever I start up chrome, it comes up with "Your connection is not private NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID"
I ran an MBAM scan and it came up with one thing, which I immediately quarantined and deleted. The problem persists. My time and date are correct, and my internet connection is fine. Wierdest of all, Firefox works like normal. I have tried everything I can find online, and nothing has worked yet. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled chrome. Nothing seems to work.

Please help, thanks.

I can access my email on my phone but not the computer.

I have a new VoIP service, and because of that, I use a Linksys Broadband RT31P2 router, included with the service. The computer which is connected to this router works perfectly fine, and so does the phone. Everything works fine, but I now want that router (Linksys) to provide wireless access to a laptop.

The problem is that the laptop is not picking up a signal from the router, and the router configuration page has no option to "send" a signal for wireless connection. I am starting to think that the Linksys Broadband RT31P2 router is not meant for wireless access, or it would have this option, and make a mention of wireless access.

Here's the product page for the router: http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=652&scid=29

I also have a Netgear WGR614v4 router, and wondering if there's something I should do with this router. I thought of connecting the Netgear router to Linksys using an Ethernet cable. Therefore, the Linksys router would be the main router, and I'd use the Netgear router as some sort of a secondary router that would give a wireless signal to the laptop. I also tried it the other way around, having the Linksys router connect to the Netgear router.

Its a bit confusing. I don't know where to go from here. If I make Netgear the main router, the computer will work, and eventhough the laptop receives the signal, it will not connect to the Internet. If I use Linksys as the main router, the computer will work, but the l... Read more

That linksys router isn't a wireless router. I've never tried hooking up two routers in serial so I can't help you there, but linksys does have a wireless router that supports VoIP that would eliminate the two router problem. The linksys model number is WRT54GP2.

Hi.
I'm VERY new to Vista (got the new laptop a few days ago with it on it). I'm an avid WOW player, and every time I log into WOW, it immediately disconnects me from the internet. When I run my ISP's diagnostic tool, it doesn't like the fact that I have a private IP, so I'm wondering if this is the issue.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? I have no idea how to change from private IP to dynamic. Currently we have 2 laptops on our router, 1 desktop and an X-Box 360.

I will post any screen shots, just have no idea what would be helpful.

Thank you so much for any help.

Hi all, A kettle malfunctioned and tripped a switch in the fuse box that disarmed the electrical sockets in the house that supplied the power to the Sky hub that my pc is connected to using the password of the Sky hub. The kettle has been replaced and the power restored.
At the time of the power failure, the pc (a HP Pavilion running Win 7) was powered up and working fine.
Since having the power restored and going online, I have noticed in the address bar and to the left of the www.pcadvisor.co.uk there is a circle which, at the centre has an exclamation (!) mark. With my mouse pointer hovering over the mark, I can view the site information which shows 'Your connection to this site is not private'.
Can someone please advise on how I can remedy this.
Thank you in advance of a solution.

A:Your connection to this site is not private.

I'm guessing that you are using Chrome.
That being the case, Chrome was recently updated (as it is every week or two / three / four) and the symbols used in the address bar changed. The circle with the ! is what now usually appears with a non-secure web page (click here By way of contrast a secure page (click here shows a green padlock.
The PCA website is not secure (and is not intended to be).
