Upgrade a Dell Computer...

Q: Upgrade a Dell Computer...

Yo, my father has a Dell Dimension 2400 as his office computer(see bottom of this post for tech specs) and I want to upgrade it to an AMD Athlon 64 3300+ Socket 754. What I wanted to do was place the new upgrade into the same case as the Dell. Here's what I plan on purchasing...

AMD Athlon 64 3300+ 2.40GHz / 256KB Cache / 1600MHz FSB / OEM / Socket 754 / Processor

My problem is that I want to get a motherboard which will fit the ATX power connector in the Dell computer and that the Motherboard will be able to use the amount of power in the Dell computer (not sure of the wattage of the PSU). Any ideas for a good Mobo is appreciated.

Tech Specs (Dell Dimension 2400):
Pentium 4 - 2.4 Ghz
Some Intel Mobo w/ integrated graphics
2 x 256 MB PC2700 333Mhz
...etc... lol, nothing much else matters

I'm ASSUMING that the Power Supply is 20 pin (I'm not at my father's office so I wouldn't know). If you're missing any info that you need to help me let me know.

A: Upgrade a Dell Computer...

What is it you plan on doing with the computer? gaming? if the present motherboard has a AGP port you would be better off spending your money on a graphics card.

Your also going to need a copy of XP once you switch the motherboard from a intel chipset to a amd chipset your not going to be able to boot from the existing hard drive. you also wont be able to use the dell recovery disk to reload windows once you swap mobo's.

Most of Dell's PSU's with P4's are 300watt

I was downloading drivers on my dell opitplex 780. I decided to upgrade my bios from A08 to A15, since it was the only bios update. When i accepted the update to restart and begin the flash, the screen would not turn on and the desktop stayed powered on for an hour before i unplugged it. After that every time i turned it on the the same thing would happen:the screen would not turn on and the desktop stayed powered when the power was plugged. After researching, i removed the motherboard battery for a few minutes then replaced it. I did not see a jumper. When i restarted i the COMS had reset and i was able to get to "starting windows" but i barely complete before a blue screen appear and it restarts. Does any one know how i can fix this issue? I was updated my bios to see if it would take more updated memory.....i guess not. Oh and with either original or new memory it does the same thing. Sorry for the long explanation.

So I have 3 Dells that all have OEM Genuine Windows installed on them and all 3 have failed to Upgrade, All 3 get the same message as you see in the picture, then it just tries to repair and fails, Im losing my mind, please help!
Tried the Dell again today, formatted installed windows 7 pro with SP1, then tried to upgrade to Win10 via USB, got the same error as in the picture above.
So we know it isnt because of any software on the Dells because they only have win 7 sp1 and nothing else.

I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10.   The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers ,  some higher.   Will they ever test it??
If you try to upgrade,  windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen)  it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung.   Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point .  So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all.
Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8.   Why not fix it.

A:Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012).

Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8?

A:Dell Vostro 5470 Not getting Dell Logo after bios upgrade in Windows 10

Yes. I did it.
Laptop have Phoenix bios.
Phoenix Bios have has restored procedure from USB Flash.
This steps to restore BIOS:
1.Get USB flash below 4Gb.

3.Get your flash update from Dell Store - xxxx.exe
4.Run cmd.exe and in command prompt run xxxx.exe /writehdrfile
5.Copy extracted Bios.cap to flash drive.
6.Turn off laptop.
Next step 7,8 may be not needed but I did it.
7.Disconnected all perihpericals including battery and charger.
8.Disconnect HDD
9.Plugged the usb drive on the laptop at the right side.
10.Hold END key
11,Pluged the powercord and relase the END key 1 second after the power cord is in.
12.USB led on stick blinked fast and we see Bios Recovery Process on screen.
13.After finish notebook reboots and worked fine.

Having read an earlier post, and my DELL manuals, it would appear my XPS-13-L321X circa 2012 is NOT upgradable in terms of SSD Hard Drive, or Memory.
Why is it that later XPS-13's appear to have such upgrade options (see link to the XPS-13 Tear Down (
Is this a turnaround by DELL so the inbuilt obsolescence is no longer a 'feature'.  I don't mind feeling a tad peeved that my glorious and loved XPS-13 is not upgradable.  Am I missing something?   Next is the link to the very graphical (although not for the nervous!) teardown, showing the removable (i.e. edge-connected, NOT soldered) SSD hard drive and Memory.
Hopeful for some clarity on the apparent dichotomy

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE [email protected]#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying  " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The stupid things run every 10 seconds. So when I think I am powering down my computer, it is being blocked by these services and actually just going to sleep... but it actually isn't sleeping. The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.

Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.

I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

Hello! My Dell XPS 15 came with a 256GB hard drive, and I am quickly realizing that this may not be enough for me. I was wondering if it were possible to upgrade to one of those "faster" ssd's, with potentially more storage. Something like these:

What kind would I need to order and how would I go about installing it? Thanks in advance!

A:Dell XPS 15 SSD Upgrade?

What you have is a native solid state drive.
What you've linked are hybrid drives - they're hard drives with built-in SSD caches.
Yes, you can install a hard drive in the system, but you would find it a major downgrade in speed if you were to use the hybrid drive for your OS.  Your solid state drive should be a card type drive (M.2), so you can ADD a hard drive or hybrid drive to the system (you may need a carrier and cable for it), but don't use one to replace your native solid state drive.
Whlie hybrid drives are faster than conventional hard drives, they're nowhere near as fast as your SSD is.

I am Currently using a Dell Inspiron 2650
320 MB Memory
Pent. 4 Processor
OS- Windows XP HE

I was thinking of Upgrading the Memory,
The computer says it has the potential of reading 3 gb...
But the recommended Memory will only give max 520 mb, with 2 slots

What do you recommend?
If i go over the Max will it mess up my comp?

A:Upgrade dell

Your operating system can handle a little over 3 gb, but your motherboard on the laptop cannot.

You are right, it can ONLY handle about 520... 512mb to be precise. Do not go over that. You'll be throwing money away on ram you'll never be able to use. You have to purchase pc2100 (266mhz) memory in sticks of 256mb (2 x 256mb max). It sounds like you have a stick of 256mb and a stick of 64mb currently installed. You could replace the existing 64mb stick with a new 256mb stick totaling 512mb RAM.

This is your only memory upgrade option... sorry. Older mainboards can only handle so much.

starmicro has a stick of 256 pc2100 ram for your machine for about $15 including shipping... check it out!

Best of Luck!

Is there any way to circumvent this, ie bios, or is it totally unfeasible.

A:Dell P2 upgrade to P3.

Check Dells website and see if there is a BIOS update for your motherboard. Dell uses custom motherboards and yours is either clock locked or just wont run with a PIII. The only other alternative is to get a Dell PIII motherboard.

Hello All,

Can't seem to get a definitive answer to this so here goes. I have a Dell laptop with Vista preinstalled and recovery disks. It has two original partitions OS(C:) and RECOVERY(D:), I have added a third for all my data, Data(F:).

I have received the Dell Windows 7 upgrade. It comes with two disks, Windows 7 upgrade and Upgrade Assistant.

My question is this, after the upgrade to Windows 7 what becomes of RECOVERY (D:), is it modified? Will the recovery recover the laptop to Vista or Windows 7?...............what will actually happen?

Thanks in advance.

A:Dell W7 upgrade

Normally, the Windows will install to partition C: and will create another, smaller partition for the BitLocker boot code stuff. BUT this depends on how you select the options in the Setup routine.

Then, normally it'll leave the Recovery partition alone (but that is not a sure thing!!!) - so that when you go to recover you'll end up back in Vista again.

The smartest thing is to make an image of your hard drive, using a free tool usually available from the website of the hard drive manufacturer (I can't recommend any freeware for this as I rely solely upon Acronis True Image for this (about $50 US)).
This will also require an external hard drive (about $70 US) to store the image - but this will also come in handy for backups.

I am helping a friend of mine upgrade his computer for his busisness. He is trying to go from a Dell Dimension 2400 to a Dell Dimension 5150. Because my friend is not very computer savvy, I am doing the work for him. I have cloned his old HDD from the 2400 to his new computer (5150) using Norton Ghost. The reason we (I) cloned his machine instead of just installing from scratch is because we do not have access to the software (or product keys) to reinstall as needed for him to continue running his busisness. Everything seems to boot up just fine, except whe it starts to ise the operating system, it stops supporting the use of the keyboard and mouse. The keyboard and mouse work just fine in other machines, and the keyboard also works just fine in BIOS. I an certain that the problem is in drivers, but I dont know how to fix/update them due to the lack of controll of the OS. THe OS is Windows XP, and at least SP2, but I have not been able to confirm that at this time.

i need this answer so i can then formulate the proper plan of action using the fantastic tools on this site.

thanks folks. any help is much, much, much appreciated.

A:Dell bios upgrade

You are best to remove the password first
But if you have the ability to boot from a floppy or CD to update your Bios, then it is likely that the password may be removed during the process

To be certain you could download the dst-cd.iso
password: smellyalater
And remove the Administrator password first

I recently purchased the following Dell 8900
Dell XPS x8900-3756BLK Desktop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB HDD + 32 GB SSD) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 with 4GB DDR3

I would like to replace the graphics card (I flight sim a lot) with a GTX 960 4GB DDR5 card, either myself or have a computer repair place do it.
Which specific cards would be easiest to install in my machine - if I search for GTX 960, I see all kinds of different length cards, 1 and 2 fans, etc.
I'd like to purchase the following card, if it will be easily installed...
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 4GB GDDR5 PCiE Graphics Cards GV-N960OC-4GD
Would a new graphics card be difficult to install myself?   What is involved?
Thank you,

A:Which GTX 960 Can I use to upgrade my Dell XPS 8900

The XPS 8900 and 8700 share the same case so if you look in this thread you'll see the cards that fit and the cards that needed some case cutting.
I can personally vouch for the the MSI GTX 970 gaming 4GB fits so check the size (length and height) and if less it should fit without issue.
If you can wait a few weeks or maybe a month, the GTX 1080 looks to be an amazing card for the price and power draw. It is going to be slightly more expensive, however much more capable.
The install is easy. search for youtube videos and you should find one.
edit: and you can sell your GTX 745 on ebay and recoup some of the cost.

Where and what are my options to buy and upgrade with?

A:Dell D520 CPU Upgrade

According to Dell that model is a Latitude D520 Notebook/Laptop, somewhat an older model that looks just a bit newer than my Latitude D810.
CNET had a review on it back in 2006.
Finding a new CPU that will fit may be difficult, used ones may be problematic. And the BIOS may need an upgrade so as to support it, plug the Service Tag number in at Dell Support to check availability.

I'm looking to buy a RAM upgrade or fresh set of RAM for my dell xps 720.
I don't know much about ram and what the best things are to look for so a little hand would be great!

I want the top end ram, and am i right in assuming the higher the speed the better?

i have run the crucial ram scanner and here are the results

I know that i need 240 pin for my system and that it only supports DDR2, so does anyone know the best ram for my pc?
(This computer is used for a lot of high end performance applications and gaming, so looking to up its specs abit haha)

Many thanks

A:RAM upgrade Dell XPS720

Look at the sticker and advise what the 7-character service tag number is. That will allow the Dell support site that's specific only to your computer to be accessed, and the system configuration section will show which RAM module(s) came installed in it.

The CRUCIAL and MEMORYTEN sites are both good sites to purchase RAM modules. I've been using them for about 4 years.

According to the CRUCIAL site, your computer uses DDR PC2- 5300 or DDR2 PC2-6400 or DDR2 PC2-8500 modules.

According to the MEMORYTEN site and the MEMORYSTOCK site, your computer uses DDR2 PC2-5300 or DDR2 PC2-6400 modules.

The CRUCIAL site does tend to list higher speed modules.

Gforce2 440 MX 64M to a Gforce3 TI200 128M

MY machine was originally a PII 450 but I upgraded that to a PIII 1Gig.The processor upgrade was not part of this upgrade. The processor was changed out about a year ago.

My question is even though every thing looks and sounds better I am seeing little or no performance improvement in my games like Nascar racing 2002, or nascar Heat frame rates are about the same. Dose anybody have any idea what is going on. I would think that the video card upgrade alone would make my frame rates jump up.

P.S. I did go online and get all the latest drivers and updates for Windows XP.

Thanks, Swkster

your biggest problem(s) are dog slow PC133 ram and a 133mhz system bus. an even faster card would not improve your game performance much because of those two bottlenecks.

Hey, I'm trying to upgrade my Dell dimension 2400 with a 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB, 40 GB; and getting a mother board with PCI express slots for gaming as well as one that will support at least a gig of ram. I want to keep processor though. Help is great!

A:Upgrade Dell MoBo

You'd need a micro atx socket 478 board with pci-express x16 then. They've been made but are hard to find. It'd be a lot easier to find one with agp...
I replaced my 2300's board with a gigabyte 8IG1000MK, which has agp, and it's a decent board. Asus also makes some nice boards with agp that are matx and socket 478. I belive it was Asrock who made the one board with pci-e, socket 478, and micro atx form factor that I've seen, but not 100% sure.

Edit: here it is.
But it has limitations on which pci-e cards it supports since it's a "fake" pci-express slot.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100. I have done many upgrades and I'm pretty
proficient at installing my own hardware. I've decided I would like to upgrade
the CPU. Here's what I have....Intel Celeron 2.0ghz 400mhzFSB 128KBcache Socket
is 478mPGA and the manufacturer is Northwood. I would like to upgrade to the
best Pentium4 processor that my motherboard can handle, but the only information
that I can get on the motherboard is the Chipset (845GL). I've already tried
contacting Dell and that is all they will tell me since they do not support CPU

I ran a couple 3rd Party Programs to tell you what hardware is on your system,
how's it running, and where you can upgrade. (PC Wizard 2008 and InSpecs.exe) I was given information that my motherboard could support a CPU up to 533mhzFSB and 2.8ghz or higher Processor. Is this true? What do I have to watch to make sure the processor would work on my Motherboard. Please Help - I have been trying to research this for over a week and keep getting different answers depending on the website I visit.

I have read many of the posts here and can't find one to match my needs. Also I don't do anything special with the computer and it is way past the warranty date. Just want extra speed for multitasking.

A:CPU Upgrade for Dell Inspiron1100

Your Dell motherboard is weak at best... Upgrading the CPU on a 533MHz Front Side Bus will not give you much speed gain. You will gain much more by maxing out your system memory

I have a Dell XPS 410 currently equipped with a Core 2 Duo 1.86 GHz CPU. I want to upgrade it to either a:

HU585 Kentsfield Quad Core Q6600, 2.40G, 8MB, 1066FSB, B30

MP626 Kentsfield Quad Core Q6600, 2.40G, 8MB, 1066FSB, G0

My question is this: will I also have to upgrade the RAM when I upgrade the processor?

Currently I have 4x512MB (2 GB Total) of 240-pin DIMM DDR2 PC2-5300 installed. Will this ram continue to function after the CPU upgrade, or will I need faster RAM?

Specifically, I was wondering if this RAM would work in my system after I upgrade the CPU:

4x1GB (4 GB Total) - 240-pin DIMM DDR2 PC2-8500 ? CL=7 ? Unbuffered ? NON-ECC ? DDR2-1066 ? 1.8V ? 128Meg x 64

Any help with this question is greatly appreciated!

Hi all,

I have an E6400 running Vista and an E4300 running Windows 7. Both with regular HDD's, wanting to upgrade them to SSD's. I have the SSD's - a Crucial BX100 250G for the first, a 120G Toshiba for the E4300.

E6400; I have 'cloned' with EaseUS Todo Backup onto the SSD, apparently successfully, via CD caddy, but it won't boot up when I replace HDD with SSD. Just get a black screen with a cursor. Could it be just that it is thinner, so loose?

I haven't tried to do the E4300, so any tips there... also read it could be something to do with Windows 'hidden files' not being cloned?

Also wondering if Win 7 or Vista is better - been happy with 7, just got the Vista machine. If one is better, can I clone one onto both & do away with Vista, or vice versa?

A:Dell Latitude SSD upgrade

When you boot into Windows and only the cursor is visible, click 1 (one) time only CTRL+ALT+DEL, select New Task, then navigate into the Windows folder, scroll down and click on explorer.

Hi all,

I've done a bit of searching on the forums, none of which specifically answered my questions but I apologise if i'm asking something which has been asked before.

Anyway, a few weeks ago I bought a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop PC with the hope of gutting it and upgrading everything over a period of time but, without doing research beforehand, I have now come to realise that you can't just replace the current Dell motherboard with any old motherboard, or so it seems.

From what I've seen on this forum and other websites, I think it's a Micro ATX motherboard inside and from what I've heard you can't replace it with a 'Non Dell' motherboard. Is this correct?

If it is, what is my best option? Just scrap the Dell pc and buy a new case?

A:Dell motherboard upgrade

The dim 2400 was a very low end computer and case. Ditch the case and Mobo, you may be able to use the other components but not worth the effort IMHO

Let it "sniff" your PC to find out what RAM it needs. Or you can manually enter the make and model number into their configurator.

It will show you the compatible RAM.

Then find a local dealer for that same part number of Crucial RAM.

If you note the complete specifications on the Crucial RAM, you could probably buy another brand that worked just as well if it matches all the specifications.

You can replace it yourself.

I have the Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop, with the Intel 915GMS/910GML chipset (according to CPU-Z). It uses socket 479 and the stock FSB is 400Mhz. I want to upgrade the Celeron M 370 CPU to a more powerful CPU (eg. a Pentium M). I was wondering whether ANY socket 479 CPU will work with this motherboard or only Pentium M and Celeron M? There are Intel Celeron M, Pentium M, Core Solo, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo processors (older model "Merom") that use the 479 socket.

Will any of these socket 479 CPUs work with this motherboard?

Also a lot (if not all) of the current socket 479 CPUs have a rated FSB of 667Mhz (even the Pentium M (which would work on this motherboard for sure). If I was to install a Pentium M with FSB667Mhz would it run at 667Mhz FSB or would it be underclocked to 400Mhz FSB?

I then proceeded to order (2) 512 MB chipsets from Dell. After installing the new memory it appears my overall system performance has slowed down a little. Is this possible? Have you checked to make sure your machine has recognized all of the memory?

I have a Dell Inspiron 518 (the one with the Core 2 Duo, no upgrades since purchase) and I don't play many games, but I'm interested in gettings these mods for GTA San Andreas which I can play fine right now that enhanced the graphics. I am willing to therefore, upgrade my graphics card.

So far, price wise, the GeForce 9500 GT seems best for me. Mwave Australia: Buy Cheap Inno3D GeForce 9500GT, 512MB DDR2, D-Sub, Dual-Link DVI, HDCP, HDTV, Fan, PCIe2.0 in Sydney, Australia Online Computer Store! That is the link. From that you get an idea of my price range, probably nothing over $90/110 in AUS but preferably around 60/70.

I understand the Dell doesn't have a good PSU either so I could upgrade it. I need your advice on the best PSU. Price range is about $>80 AUS. I found Mwave Australia: Buy Cheap Thermaltake 430W PSU (W0084) in Sydney, Australia Online Computer Store! and Mwave Australia: Buy Cheap Gigabyte Superb 460 460W Superb Power Supply, 120mm Fan, PCI-E Conn., 4x SATA Power Connectors, RoHS ready (24EPG-P40AC2-31R) in Sydney, Australia Online Computer Store!.

So main question:
Would putting a Nvidia GeForce 9500GT in a Dell Inspiron 518 with around 450W PSU upgrade work?

Also, I don't know much about what my comp actually has/uses in hardware like eg SATA or PCIE. If I got the PSU in the link, the one without SATA, would it still work?

This is your machine?
Dell Inspiron 518 Desktop Details

More detailed specs:
Dell Inspiron 518 Desktop Computer (Intel Core 2 Quad 320GB HDD, 2GB) specs and Desktop specifications - CNET Reviews

You need SATA connectors.

Realistically you could probably get away with using your existing PSU, but either of those PSU's you linked would do the job.

However any of the Thermaltake PSU's that aren't from the Toughpower series aren't generally regarded as quality units. I haven't much about the Gigabyte models. Unfortunately quality PSU's have a price to match.

But at least they aren't SHAWS (Never, ever, ever buy a SHAW PSU)

But yes, a 9500GT will work with a 450W PSU.

I'm currently attempting to upgrade a Dell Dimension 1100 for a friend, and I have a question: does anyone know if it would be possible to replace the mobo and and PSU in this system, or is it all proprietary? (i'd much rather replace the case myself, but he likes it as it is.)

for those of you interested, here's a link to the product/specs:

A:Dell upgrade woes

sorry, looks like you're out of luck, b/c All of dells products use propietary mobos, and PSUs, thats why if you look at the rear of the PC, the ports are in different places than in a off the shelf mobo.for example, the PS/2 ports are located lower down on the case unlike most mobos which put them on top. If you replace the mobo, you will have to buy another copy in WInXP, since the OEM version that came loaded on it, is locked to that mobo.

A:Dell 2400 Upgrade!

I am pretty sure its all possible, but I'm not an expert. Only thing I'm not certain on is how to upgrade the processor. The limiting factor may be your FSB speed.

Video Card -- First thing to know is that the Dimension 2400 has no AGP or PCI-E graphics slot, so you'll have to buy a PCI Graphics Card. I got a GeForce FX5500 256mb PCI card off ebay really cheap.

Memory -- Your machine sounds like its a touch newer than mine (I have a P4 2.2GHZ processor), so I'm not certain on your memory but mine has PC2700 memory. If all else fails download the system scan from and it will tell you exactly what memory you have, but you can also check the CMOS for the memory bus speed too.

Hard drive -- 2nd hard drives are easy. You'll need a new cable as the OEM one has only one drive connection, but once you get power and the controller connected, boot into CMOS, turn on the primary slave, then go into windows and poof it is there. You'll have to format and partition but that's pretty easy from the MMC. I run a 20gb 2nd drive to which I back up all my documents/pictures/personal data. You will need a Dell HD bracket to mount the drive, but you can get those off ebay for ~$10.

Same process for installing the DVD burner...

WiFi -- As for the WiFi card that is literally plug and play, particularly if you have the XP service pack w/ the wireless networking utility.

I recently received a new video card as a birthday present. The card is an VisionTec ATI Radeon HD 4870 that requires a PCI Express x16 and 600 watt power supply.

First, my Dell Dimension XPS Gen 2 contains only a 420 watt power supply.
Second, there are no PCI Express slots (only AGP and PCI slots).

It is worth upgrading my current machine's motherboard and power supply?
Would it be cheaper to buy a new machine to support this new video card?

I'd like to use the machine both for games (like Crysis) and for home video editing.

Same basic question with regard to the ram, I think the max upgrade I can go is 512 megs which is what I'll do, but out of curiousity what would happen if more than 512 were placed in the laptop?

A:Dell Laptop HD upgrade

According to you are correct that the total RAM would be 512MB of PC133 SDRAM with a maximum of 256 per slot. If you put more than that it in it will not recognize all of the RAM or it's possible it won't work. For example if you put one 256MB stick in and one 512MB stick you probably would only show 256MB.

As far as the HD it's a little harder to answer. My "guess" is that 30MB would be fine based on your laptop date. The Dell forum (a good place to post your question) suggests that 40MB or 60MB would be OK also.

I am trying to upgrade my video card slightly from the one that came with the pc. (It came with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE 128mb) I would also like to upgrade the processor, however that is something I may consider later on. I have and intel core 2 duo cpu, 4 gb of ddr2 Ram, a PNY xlr8 120gb ssd, along with a secondary 232gb hdd. The bus types on the mobo are
pci 32 bit (pci specification 2.2)
pci express x1, x4 (x8 wired as x4 electrically) and x16 (pci express 1.1a)
bus speed is for pci and pci expres is 33mhz and 100mhz respectively.

I have been having trouble to find what is compatible and still available for purchase. I am looking to spend only about 70$ or so. So obviously not a major upgrade.

any help would be appreciated!

I made an image of my dell6400 xp home Hard drive and installed it on my dell9400 with Paragon Drive Backup 8.5, xp pro is on another partition.I wanted to upgrade my my xp home 6400 "image" to xp pro but the dell xp pro cd does not have an upgrade option. So i did a clean install, leaving my file system intact. Now i have a blank desktop. My Programs are still on my hard drive but are not accessable.I have tried to link them to the start menu but only some work .I didn't want to do a complete clean install as i have so many programs. It went well until i tried to upgrade to xp pro. Is their any way to link all my programs .Or can i use a full version xp pro cd for the upgrade.

A:No upgrade option on Dell xp cd

An OEM disk cannot be used for an Upgrade. You'll have to purchase a Retail XP Pro CD to upgrade the Dell 6400. An Upgrade or Full version will work.

The Operating System installs on Dell PCs are OEM, meaning you can't use the Dell XP Pro CD on the Dell 6400, at least not without purchasing an additional license for the XP Pro Software.

Hi guys,
I've been looking at the Dell XPS 15 9550, and I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to upgrade the storage that comes with a FHD (the one i'm looking at comes with a 1TB Hard Drive) into 1TB SSD. Has anyone tried it, and/or is it possible to replace the hard drive with a 1TB solid state drive?
Side note: I'm trying to get the FHD because I don't want to pay extra for a 4K display (something I don't want).

Hello All,
I have recently purchased quite an old Dell Dimension 2400 which I think is about 3 years old. It currently has 768 meg of RAM installed and im looking to upgrade it with this :

But I am unsure wether or not it will fit...I know that the Dell manual tells you what RAM is compatible but I purchased this second hand and have no manuals to go by. I do want 2GB so that I can run Vista smoothly so if this doesnt fit can anyone point me to somewhere I can get a 2GB RAM stick for Dimension 2400 if at all possible, if not well then second best will do.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Hello all,

This is my first post. I have a Dell XPS 400 system and I want to upgrade it so it is faster for gaming. However, I wonder if I'm wasting my money and should start over with a new computer. If I was to upgrade something on my current computer I would think the graphics card would be the first to upgrade. Although my processor isn't a dual one like most are now and that could prob use an upgrade, which in turn might mean upgrading my motherboard, which also may need a bigger power supply and different type of RAM......which is why I'm writing for a recommendation. I can't throw a lot of money into this, but I definitely don't want to put money into something that won't help me and end up replacing anyhow.

My specs are listed below, and you assistance is much appreciated!

EDIT: THought my specs would automatically pop up since it is in my profile....

Operating System: Windows XP Professional
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Dell DXP051

PC2-5300/6400 DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs
I looked on a site that said this was what I had but im not really sure what it means or if its correct. Could someone show me a link of where to buy this kind if it is correct.

A:Dell Memory (Ram) upgrade

Hello there.

It looks like you had the correct type or memory. You can check the site and use their Memory Advisor Tool. I've never had a problem with them.

Just remember that if you're using 32-bit Windows XP, Windows will only use 3.5GB at a time.

A:dell vostro 360 do i need to upgrade

johnboy18, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Unless there is an option in the bios to increase the amount of system ram allocated to graphics, there is nothing to do.

Also can not suggest/recommend a new video card as what you have despite it being sold as a desktop, is nothing more than a laptop built into the monitor with all the same limitations as far as upgrading parts goes.

Hi everyone, I am newbie here. Recently I need to upgrade my ram on XPS8700. And I went to Best Buy and bought a "PNY - 2-Pack 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit". It does not work, computer can not power on with flashing orange lights.
So I went to Crucial website, it recommends me to use a DDR3L RAM. I saw all the DDR3Ls are for laptops. Could it be used in my desktop? And my current RAM is Hyundai. Could it be mixed with other brand like Crucial or Kingston?
My pc specs:
i7 4770
GTX 645
Dell Inc. 0KWVT8 mobo

A:Dell XPS 8700 RAM upgrade

Laptops first started using DDR3L which is why the market is flooded with it, however you just need to look for the desktop version for your computer.  If you go to crucial they should have an auto test that will detect the correct ram for your machine and give you the list of options you can pick from.

I did a research, browsed the forums, many posts stated
Antec SmartPower 2.0 should work fine and fit, but after checking the reviews for that psu it turned out, most of the people did'nt had a good experience with it, either the psu stopped working or took out the whole motherboard

Hi everybody,

Today, I've buy a new daughter board : 55.4IE0.201 to replace my actual daughter board 48.4IE11.011.

Why ? Just to get the mSata ! :)

My service tag 7347NR1 to get information about my base configuration.

But my bios doesn't see it ! I think i should change my bios to the 15R SE, it's right ?

Have a good day :)

The N5110 is a totally different model than the 15R SE (despite the N5110 being called a 15R, which well over a dozen models are).
There is no mSATA daughterboard for an N5110.

Hey guys, I'm new here. I have a Dell XPS 400 desktop that has the specs to run Vista, and I have a Vista Install DVD. My problem is that the computer will not recognize the DVD. I have it set to boot from CD first, and it ignores the DVD and tries to boot into Windows XP. It is not the DVD, because I have tried it on other computers and it reads it. Does anyone know what I can do about this? I would really appreciate some help on this, and if you need more info please ask.

A:Upgrade Dell XPS 400 problems

Hey Ubuntu Vista.

All you need to do is put in the disk and run setup from WITHIN windows. So just boot into XP like normal and run Setup. From here, you can choose to do a clean install or an upgrade. If you do a clean install, just install it into the same partition that XP is on (assuming you want to replace it). All your old files will be SAVED in a Windows.old folder.

I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1150 Cpu from a 2.6 celeron to a 3.2 P4 mobile cpu.
the machine booted fine and worked fine for some time.
though after a while it shut down due to a over heat and now when i boot the screen is blank,
the fan comes on , the hard drive starts and shuts down then the fan stops.though the power light stays on.
I reinstalled the 2.6 and everything is as it was before the upgrade.
I know this 3.2 should work because through research I found that others have used a 2.8 P/N SL725 with no problems
and the 3.2 P/N SL77R both have the same specs.
I am at a loss.
**note** I have up dated the Bios to the latest A07, updated the chipset. its a fresh install of Windows xp pro OS with all
the updates... I thought i might have cooked the CPU (3.2) and ordered a new one.installed and got the same results at boot up.

Hi all,

I'm new here, so be nice!

I've got the following PC:

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 3326 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200, 512 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 76285 MB, Free - 9300 MB;
Motherboard: Dell Computer Corp., 0F4491
It does a job, to be fair. I use it for basic stuff such as MS Office, the internet, music notation software etc.

I've just started getting into gaming again though, and my system sometimes struggles on the higher graphics settings.

Is there anything worthwhile doing to my PC to upgrade, or is it simply a case of it's too old to do anything with, and I'd be better saving up for a new system?

If the latter is true, would I be likely to gain any financial bonus from selling my current setup - either as a whole or separately?

Many thanks.

I have a Dell Dimension 4300 computer. It has sdram memory. I'm under the impression that in order to use the newer style 2 stage memory I would have to replace the motherboard.

Would this be a worthwhile thing to do? The CD burner has been replaced with a multi format CD DVD burner and it has 2 hard drives.

Also, What else would have to be replaced besides the memory chips and CPU?

The issue with B1 series being OK and B2 being NOT OK has to do with the maximum combined power on the 3.3v/5v rails being 150W on the B1 series but only 120W on the B2 series.

The Registry recently became corrupted on my Dell Inspiron 9400 and after several unsuccessful attempts at fixing it I am giving up and installing a new Crucial 120GB SSD and hopefully upgrading the OS to either Win 7 or 8. But this brings up several questions that I'm hoping someone can answer for me.
A) Will this old a laptop run either of these operating systems properly?
B) If so, will it run any version of them - Home, Premium, Pro, Ultimate, etc.
C) Will it run 64 bit or just 32 bit?
D) Can I do a clean install on a new Solid State Drive? And if so, do I need to buy an OS upgrade version or a full version, (I'm assuming there is a difference.) (I think I still have the original Win XP installation discs).

If this project is feasible and I get through all of the above are there any other problems that I am liable to run into?

Thanks for your time and advice.
