How to switch off laptop screen & password protect switch on again?

Q: How to switch off laptop screen & password protect switch on again?

Is it possible to switch off a laptop screen - laptop runs Windows 7 - and prevent it being switched on again, without inputting a password?

I need to keep the laptop running, therefore I can't put it to sleep and logging-off has become a pain.

I've tried the Power Options, but the display comes on again when the mouse is nudged.

I've also tried "Fn + F6" on my Acer laptop, which switches off the screen, but an accidental key press brings it to life again.

Any ingenious little prog around? None I've seen have that crucial password privacy aspect.

I've searched the forum and could not find an answer to this problem.

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise machine where at the login screen the "Switch User" button is missing and so I am unable to clear the last user.

Just about all the results I got back on this topic was how to re-enable the "Switch User". This doesn't help because I can't login to make the change.

When I go to options, click Norton Internet Security I get "access denied" only supervisor can change option. I've never set a password and cannot seem find any option to change it if one was selected. On the Norton Antivirus option it will open but when I select "turn auto-protect on" it will not stay that way.

I went to Symantec website, tryed to uninstall but again access denied because some monster has taken over NAV.

Any ideas??

I am trying to fix this laptop

The problem is that the screen is always very dark, even though it briefly flashes up ok for about 1 second when it is POST'ing. I thought at first that the screen was dead, so i connected it upto an external monitor which worked fine, then I started to press Fn and F11 to cycle through the available displays and noticed something strange.

With the external monitor connected the laptop screen is very dark but you can just make out a few things, press Fn and F11 and both the laptop screen and extenal monitor go blank, press Fn and F11 again and the picture appears for about 1 second on the laptop OK then goes back to being dark but just making out a few things and the external monitor is OK.

Is the laptop screen completely dead or not? If so why does it briefly display OK?

I have emailed the technical support people and all they said was
?It sounds like the timeout switch is faulty?
Any idea what a timeout switch is and can it be replaced without replacing the screen? I have replied back to them asking them similar questions but I?m think I may get another ?detailed? email like the first one.

A:Laptop screen and timeout switch

you will find that the timeout switch is the switch that turns the screen off when you shut the lid. to replace the switch, you will have to dismantle the laptop so that you can remove the damaged switch and then replace it with the new switch. can you use a soldering iron. most times they are soldered onto the M/B. if you are lucky, it won't be. good luck

Hi guys,

Are you aware of any pendrives equipped with a physical (mechanical) write-protect switch?

I used to have an old Phillips drive with that feature but it recently died. I need it as I qute often port files to other machines outside our corporate network.

I'm familiar with Kanguru thumb drives but I'm looking for expanding the choice a bit.

A:Pendrvie with physical write protect switch

That feature has not been around for a long time. The only way to do it is by setting the Security permissions for the drive, which can always be circumvented with Linux.

My screen is blank and I have been struggling to find out why. I replaced the screen and the inverter. If I shine a flashlight into the screen I can barely make out what is being displayed. If I hook up a CRT monitor the output works perfectly. Just a couple minutes ago, I was playing with the switch that disables the screen when you close the lid, but it had no effect on the LCD screen. Any thoughts or ideas?

A:ZT1130 Laptop Screen Activation Switch Failure

Sounds like the backlight is just not working. The switch would have no effect if the backlight was not working, that is what it controls. If it's working.

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. Thanks

A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

One question I need to know

If you go from DSL modem to Router then Router to switch
my question is then
If I wanted to hook another mini linksys switch into the bigger switch would you run the cat5e cable from the first switch to a reg port in the second switch or would you run it to the uplink port and then hook the 1 or 2 computers into the reg ports of the second switch.??

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100! switch&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

The problem is now I have 3069 mb physical memory and ONLY 209 mb Kernal Memory!!! so I used the "bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa" and bcedit said it worked successfuly so i restart my pc and it STILL had the same memory! so right now im stuck with only 209 mb Kernal memory! any ideas on how to fix this? I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

I have a D-Link DES1108 switch which is connected to a router which is connected to a cable modem.
I have 2 computers and a NAS also connected to the router.
I have 2 more computers connected to the switch.

All computers can access the inet normally.
Each of the computers on the router can see and talk to the NAS.
The computers on the switch can see the NAS but when I try to connect to it, it is asking for a password.
The computers are a mix - 1=XP, 1=Vista, 2=W7. They are all configured as workgroup, no domain.
If I move a computer from the router to the switch it will also request a password to access the NAS.

If the NAS is on the switch then all will require a password. I have no clue why it is asking for a pw, or what pw it would like.

A switch is not configurable, correct? It is just suppose to connect everything. The computers on the switch get the IP from the router as do the ones on the router.

So what am I missing????????

The NAS still may require a password of some sort to keep unwanted people out of it. What model of NAS do you have?

Ophcrack found "passwords" for three accounts:

*disabled* Guest

Most important, the user name shown at the log on screen is NOT one of these three.

Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor
This is a utility to reset the password of any user that has a valid local account on your Windows system.
Supports all Windows from NT3.5 to Win7, also 64 bit and also the Server versions (like 2003 and 2008)
You do not need to know the old password to set a new one.
It works offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a CD or USB disk to do the password reset.
Will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts!
There is also a registry editor and other registry utilities that works under linux/unix, and can be used for other things than password editing.

I am about to add 3 new servers into an existing network, which is currently all on 1gbps ethernet. All of the new servers are SSD-based and to me it makes sense to go with 10gbps coming out of the servers into a switch, and then 1gbps out to the workstations.

The new server location is about 200 feet from the existing networking equipment/old server location, so using Cat 6A/Cat 7 copper would be REALLY nice/economical.

Where I am hitting a jam is any 48 port gigabit + 4 10gbps switch is $$$.

I am trying to find a small 10gbps copper switch, say an 8 port, that is expandable, and compatible with a 48 port 1gbps switch. Does such a thing exist?

I have Windows XP Home as my OS

To switch account users or to log off and log on to another account on the same XP Home, I just hit the log off button and click on the other account icon

Now, for some reason, after hitting the log off or switch user icon, the XP OS goes to a blue and cream coloured panel headed:
"Log On to Windows
Windows XP Home Edition
User Name:
OK Cancel Options"

The only thing I can put this down to is the night before it started I did a Zone Alarm Spyware search and it picked up and deleted:
Trojan - Win32.1sass

I tried doing a system restore point a few days prior but it requests my XP Home "User Name" and "Password" again
Unfortunately, my user name comes up automatically, but I can't remember my "password". I punched in about 10 different passwords I suspected were correct but it rejected

How can I fix this problem up and just log off and switch users without this User name/Password screen coming up all the time?

My laptop, an Acer Aspire 1640Z, has suddenly stopped switching off. Whether I use the Alt F4 or the Turn off Computer icon on the Start, it simply stays on. I have to switch it off on the on-off button, holding it down. When it comes back on - which it does easily - it tells me it needs to review the discs, does so, and then works until I have to switch off again. I tend to run it with the mains lead in, because the battery has a poor life.
Cananyone help, please?

Hi, I'm really hoping someone can help me.

Recently my Hewlett Packard Laptop (HP Pavillion Entertainment PC) has been in working order when plugged in but the battery gage was at 0% and reading plugged in but not charging.

This afternoon my wireless Internet connection momentarily was lost and, without thinking about it I unplugged my laptop to go and take it closer to the hub as this normally brings the Internet symbol back on.

Well, my computer died. Having realised that it had switched off without having been shutdown properly, I quickly rushed back to where I had been sitting and plugged it into the mains and rebooted it in "safe mode" - no problems, it came back on and was working as before but still reading that it wasn't charging even though it was plugged in.

Then exactly the same thing happened again and I unplugged it and took it through to try to get the connection with the Internet again but this time it switched off and now it will not switch back on. I have tried to hold the "on" switch down for over a minute - but nothing, no sound of the fans, no lights, no beeps, nothing.
Now the laptop will neither switch on with the battery in or out of it. Consequently I have a laptop that is not working and a charger that appears to be working even if the computer did not read that it was supplying power to it.

Can this be fixed?
Is it just a case of getting a new battery? Where do I get one of those?
Please tell me that my compute... Read more

My old laptop died recently, HDD intact running Windows 7-64 bit. With my tight budget on a new machine, I purchased a used Dell that has completely different hardware and runs Vista 32-bit.

I don't like Vista much and wanted to keep my files without having to pay for a new licence, so I put the Windows 7 HDD in the new machine - only to get a blue screen every time, and Windows repair didn't do much good.

Looking around the internet, it turned out Sysprep was my best bet to use so that Windows could reinstall drivers or something (I'm not knowledgable about this area)

The problem with using this, is that after disabling all startup programs, services, cleaning the Panther folder and running in Safe Mode, Sysprep gets a fatal error:

2012-09-03 17:35:05, Error [0x0f0082] SYSPRP LaunchDll:Failure occurred while executing 'C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iessetup.dll,SysPrep_Cleanup', returned error code 2
2012-09-03 17:35:05, Error [0x0f0070] SYSPRP RunExternalDlls:An error occurred while running registry sysprep DLLs, halting sysprep execution. dwRet = 2
2012-09-03 17:35:05, Error [0x0f00a8] SYSPRP WinMain:Hit failure while processing sysprep cleanup providers; hr = 0x80070002
I've followed several thread solutions and stuff but I can't seem to get past this Fatal error. I've read a lot about Rearm, but this Vista is a fully licensed OEM copy, however it has had a previous owner, so I'm not sure what they've done to it.

A:Trying to switch HDD's in Laptop

You can't normally move a HD with an OS installed from one computer to another computer and expect it to boot. This will only work if the hardware is very similar.

If the Windows 7 laptop had the OS installed when purchased it cannot be legally moved to another computer. An OEM OS lives and dies on the original computer it was installed on. Only if the OS was installed from a full retail disk could it legally be moved.

Your options are simple: continue to use Vista or purchase a legal copy of Windows 7.

Hi nurhezlin, and welcome to the forums! I understand you're having problems getting your laptop powered on. What model is it? You say that the Caps Lock LED comes on. Does it flash a number of times? If so, how many times does it flash? When you say you tried the 'step that is told on the forum', do you mean a hard reset? If not, try the following:Remove the power cord and batteryPress and hold the power button for 15 secondsPlug in the power cord (but not the battery)Press Power and see if your laptop boots

Please help - my boyfriend won't leave his laptop until it is working again!!

Yesterday he was trying to copy a DVD. As far as I understand (which is limited), it froze and he turned it off.

When you try to switch it on, you get a black screen with a white message - the jist of it says that Windows shut down and that to restart it you need to choose a mode - it gives you options 'safe mode' 'last known settings that worked' 'normal mode' etc. We have tried all of these modes - the most successful of which always looks really promising - you get the blue windows screen, logo and jingle - it looks like it is starting up but then dies and the screen goes black. When you turn it on you get the black screen again and go around in circles..

Please HELP! Please make any advice as idiot proof as possible - I am totally clueless with techno jargon! It runs on Windows XP!

Thank you

My Dell Inspiron 3521 many times does not switch on. When I press the power button the charger light blinks everytime the power button is pressed and around the center of the keyboard there is a tick noise everytime the power button is pressed but the laptop wont come on. I even tried holding the power button for 30 seconds, sometimes longer and still nothing. Even when its on and I put the laptop to sleep, it shuts down completely, and doesn't on thereafter. I can only charge my laptop while its switched on. If while charging I shut down, the laptop switches off completely and doesn't charge, the charge light doesn't remain on. There are no beep noises and the laptop does switch on at times and functions normally, but 90% of the time it doesn't switch on. Please Assist

A:Laptop Does not Switch On

When did the issue start? Are there any bluescreens / system crashes? Does the system overheat? Are you using the original Dell power adapter for the machine? When the adapter is connected to the system, does the led on the adapter stay stable or does it flash?
Update the BIOS - and reinstall the chipset and video drivers from the support site.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. Also, run the extended tests on the memory and HDD.
If the system is under warranty, write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details.

My laptop just switched itself off whilst I was using it. I switched it back on, and it started up giving me the 2 options: start windows normally or the recommended option to fix the problem.

It then went to ?loading up files?, with a progress bar at the bottom. This took about 5 mins to complete. The Microsoft corporation words came up on a black screen with the loading bar below it.

It then goes to a black screen, with a large cursor. Nothing happens after this.

This happens which ever option I go for.

I?ve also tried the f8 safe mode options, and it just restarts itself and goes through the above process.

I went to sleep last night, woke up this morning, fired up my laptop and all of a sudden, I couldn't use my dedicated card. I left my laptop on hibernate as I always do, but when I turned it on to come out of hibernate, I received a notification that a "fatal error occurred" and I had to restart my computer. This was the first time I had received this message, so I restarted.

When I logged in, my GPU settings were switch to integrated and I was stuck with the crappy Intel graphics. There's a button on my laptop that switches between dedicated and integrated, so I pressed it and restarted my computer with dedicated graphics. Of course when I logged in, they were still stuck in integrated. I tried this several more times, as well as switching the Vista power settings around and nothing. I even system restored to several different dates (as far back as a week ago), but nothing works. I don't think it's a driver problem, or system restore would have corrected it... Can anyone offer some insight? Here's my specs:

When I play a game or listen to music, etc I usually use headphones. Now I notice that even though the headphone jack is plugged in my laptop's speakers don't switch off. I attached two screenshots; they show that the game's sound is somehow linked to the speaker's volume and in the other that the headphone's volume is also linked to the system's volume. This means when I turn the volume down for the speakers then the headphones are also automatically turned down.

How do I fix this?

Right click on the volume notification icon and select volume control options. From there you should be able to give your headphones their own volume control. I hope I understood your question correctly.

I am hoping someone might be able to give some advice on an issue that seems to be increasing in frequency. We downgraded our DSL service a few months back from 6MB to 3MB and when I called to get help reconfiguring our router, I noticed they had me set it up as WPA instead of WEP. Instantly I noticed that when bringing our laptops out of hibernation state, that they took longer to connect to the internet and sometimes required a few different attempts to connect.

The problem seems to have only gotten worse. We have two laptops. Mine (a Gateway NV52 seems to be having the most issues connecting now and is running Vista 64bit). Some nights I am literally spending 30-45 minutes trying to connect to the internet, some times it eventually works and other times I just give up and either go use our desktop or the other laptop (that isn't running Vista 64bit). We do have wireless phones in the house and I've read somewhere that WPA doesn't work as well as WEP if you have wireless phones. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm also wondering if anyone has any advice on how to troubleshoot this? Does this sound like something is going bad with a wireless card in my laptop? Should I try to switch back to WEP?

Before downgrading our DSL service and switching from WEP to WPA I had no issues and everything worked flawlessly. I would just take the laptop out of hibernation, and it seemed to already be connected.

Thanks for any advice.

A:Laptop having issues after switch from WEP to WPA

Hi dragon889,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

It does not sound like your wireless card because you say the problem (though perhaps not as bad, but still similar) exists with the other laptop too. You didn't mention the desktop, so I can't say there - but if it's happening to two PCs and started at the same time on both and as a result of a change to your router configuration and service plan, then I'd have to say that it is unlikely that it's the wireless card. I can't accept they'd both start having problems coincidentally at the same time.

It could be the change from WEP to WPA (or any of the other changes they made at the same time that they didn't discuss with you). Are all the computers setup with the proper configuration (WPA and no longer WEP)?

Although I would have called them (I assume you mean the ISP) the very next day, it still may not be too late to get the people who reconfigured your router (or people like them) to recheck the configuration (and the modem and the line at the same time) to make sure everything is fine. If so, then have them check the configurations of all the computers as well - changing the router settings may have required changes in the computer settings that they overlooked at the time. I think most of this can be done over the phone and you don't need to schedule a visit (especially if that costs when phone service is free I hope).

Find out why it was changed from WEP to WPA and ask if it can be changed back since it seemed to be w... Read more

I am in Switzerland and have a UK Dell laptop. It has been working fine with a EU plug adaptor on the UK plug. Now when I try to turn on the power on my laptop, it will not fire up. If I hold down the power on button for 3 - 5 seconds, the red light still comes on together with a blue light on the power button but still nothing comes up on the screen. What does the lights mean? I do not know what is going on here. Please help! Thanks very much.

A:Dell laptop will not switch on

It is possible that it is not getting power from the plug, and the battery is run down.
Tell us what model of Dell, the configuration, and perhaps the perhaps the service tag number, as well as the age of the hard drive and screen.
But from what you describe, it is either not attempting to boot, or it is booting but there is nothing on the screen.

With the unit off, and the power adapter plugged in, see if you can feel any looseness at the power socket. Sometimes that socket comes loose and will not accept power.
Hold down the power battery for 15 to 20 seconds without letting up. That will clear the unit thoroughly.
When you attempt to reboot, listen in a quiet environment. We would like to know if you detect any noise typical of the hard drive booting up.
Then let us know if there is still a dark screen.

i have an acer aspire 5942g which i love but can not find out if it is using the onboard graphics or the dedicated ATI 5650 graphics card. how can i find out and also how can i select it to use one over the other? (ie force it to use the onboard to save battery and then force it to use the dedicated when plugged in?)

Also it says on the acer sticker it came with that it has upto 2747MB Hypermemory on the ATI 5650 but that is only a 1GB graphics card! how is this possible?

Need someone with a similar laptop to confirm, but from looking here,

Switchable Graphics on Hp Laptops - Page 2

you should have an option on the desktop context menu (right click) for choosing which to use.

As for that memory reading this should help explain it,

I was using my Sony Vaio laptop (FE series I least 5 yrs old) on Skype with family when the laptop crashed. I pressed the on/off button to switch off the laptop and reboot but there was no response when the laptop was trying to power up. The on-off button lights up, the 3 caps lock/scroll lock, etc lights switch on and remain on, but nothing appears on screen and nothing furter appears to happen.

I've left the laptop on charge for a couple of days and retried, same outcome. I've tried starting from the power cable and no battery, same outcome.

Do you have any ideas to as to what might have happened and how I can fix it? Would my hard-drive be corrupting thus losing all the data stored? How would I be able to hook the hard-drive up to another machine and copy off all the data?

A:Sony Vaio laptop won't switch on

Hello, it looks like there is something wrong with your screen, but is it always just black even from starting? Because on start you could enter recovery mode and start the laptop in safe mode, but if it's impossible to do so, then you can try to connect your laptop to external PC if you have one. Then you will see what's going on and figure out is it a screen problem or the whole system is messed up. Good luck!

I have a desktop pc I just built I am currently using my laptop HD in my desktop machine if I was to put the laptop HD back in the laptop would it bootup and run programs like normal or will I have to reinstall the os and all programs

A:can I switch my HD back to my laptop from desktop

You would need to clean install the OS and all the programs.

If the OS for the desktop was installed on the laptop hard drive (installed in the desktop) then all of the drivers in the OS are geared for the desktop. None of the drivers needed to run on the laptop are installed. It would not start up.

You could install the hard drive in the laptop and then do a Repair Install on the existing OS installation to try and save some time and effort, but these can result in some strange behaviors in some cases.
To have the best OS installation you really should do a clean install.

My laptop has increasing updates when I switch it on. It started at update 1 of 1 and is now at update 1 of 66. Which means it can take forever to start.
I don't understand why this is increasing all the time? And I can't find any similar queries on any support sites?
Is it possible this is a virus?
I have AVG free anti-virus software and the computer scan is coming out clear. Even in Safe mode.

Can anyone please help?

I have an Acer TravelMate 290 (running XP) and have recently installed a BT broadband homehub. I initially had no problems accessing the wireless network but then my PC stopped detecting any wireless networks - as though the radio was off. Now I cannot switch my radio on - the switch on the PC is not working at all. The problem began once I brought the PC out of hibernation after having (accidently) switched the homehub off and on.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the BT software, updating the wireless driver (from the Acer website) - all with no success.

Something that may or may not be relevant is that I also recently installed a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse onto the laptop.

Has anybody experienced similar problems or have any suggestions? Advice gratefully received.

I just bought an HP Pavilion dv2315nr laptop with a cracked screen. I need it to automatically and immediately switch over to an external display when I turn it on. The only way I can get the display to switch over to my external LCD monitor is when I hit FN+F4 when Windows Vista has already begun loading. Unfortunately, there's a password on the accounts once I get that far. I don't have the passwords to them. I've tried restarting the system so I can do a system recovery, but once I restart, the display switches back to the cracked LCD. I've tried hitting F11 to do a system recovery once it starts, but I can't get it to switch the display to external when I go into system recovery. I'm stuck with the cracked screen.

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I work on used/abused Toshiba laptops. On several occasions I have found the physical wireless switch wont operate - even after stripping to and examining the motherboard. In all these cases the internal wireless will not operate: the message "no networks in range" is shown.
I have asked Toshibe if there is a way to make the wireless work when the switch wont, but they are only interested in selling a new motherboard or laptop.
Does anyone know of a way to bypass the u/s switch and get wireless without an external PC or USB card?

I recently purchased a 120GB Western Digital Scorpio WD1200VE Hard Drisk Drive to upgrade my Toshiba Portege M200, however i think im going to find it difficult to replace because it has no floppy disk drive and looking about the internet I see you may need one to format the new hard drive. I have two external DVD drives, Philips DVD ReWriter 16x and a Toshiba External Slimline CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive.

any suggestions to what I should do?

Cheers in advance

Hi - I am having to extend my network and want to use 2 switches. Current one is a Belkin 5 port 10/100. Now thinking of buying the:

Belkin 8 port 10/100 (F5D5513Iuk8) or
Netgear 8 port 10/100 (FS608) or
Netgear Prosafe 8 port 10/100 (FS108).

Which is the best one to get (I realise the Netgear Prosafe is normally more expensive but I can get it at the same price as the Belkin)?

Could anybody also advise if the second switch will provide as much speed (bandwidth, I think) to the PCs it supplies (3) as the first one which will be linked to my router and 3 PCs and a couple of printers. I would really appreciate any advice you can give - I have spent ages Googling this question and am still not clear.

Many thanks

I just bought a netgear Cable/DSL router with an 8 port switch built in. I am currently still at school, so there is no need for the router, but I want to use the hardware as a switch. I am confused as to how to set this up.

The router I have is a Netgear RO318.

I know very little about setting up networks, but I assumed it would be the same as just switching out the hub. Boy was I wrong. I switched them out and it doesn't work like I thought it would. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks all.

Actually, at this very second I am trying to figure out that exact same thing! I will definately help you out if and when i get it figured out.

Hi all,

Just wondering if I can connect a switch to a switch? so my network would look like this

Router ---- Switch ---- Switch - - - - computer connected wirelessly

primary reason for doing this is i want to bring the wireless router closer to the middle of my house... some areas are getting really weak signals..

A:Switch to Switch Connection?

You could do that, but why not just get a longer network cable? Ethernet on Cat-5e is good up to 100m.
