I have a new Dell desktop running WinXP. In the past two weeks, my computer has froze on me twice. I was using Outlook Express today and last time I believe I was using Explorer. The mice freezes, nothing happens when I hit Control+Alt+Del, and when I hit the power button on the tower, it still remains on. Nothing shuts off. The only way I can get my computer back again is to unplug it from the wall and replug. When I did that today, It showed the picture on my desktop but all the icons were missing. I hit the Start button to go to MSOutlook Express and I saw the desktop icons briefly (but against a blue background - no wallpaper). Now it's running okay.

I called Dell's helpdesk and they had me run "msconfig" and uncheck all the applications that run upon startup. I also was told to then to to Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System Properties, Advanced, Error Reporting, and then to check "Disable Error Reporting" and to NOT notify me when critical errors occur.

Then I was told to go to Start, Run, and type in "services.msc", click on Remote Procedure (the first one because there are two),
Recovery, and then in the drop downs select "Take No Action" for First, Second, and Subsequent Failures.

He said I won't have anymore crashes. Does this sound right? I also said that I usually have McAfee running at all times (right from starting the computer) to detect viruses. I asked how my system is being protected, ... Read more

A:Dell Inspiron 1501 Information

My original question is what method does Dell use to provide password protection on this Inspiron 1501. Why is that considered asking for a password? If I asked where the CMOS is stored on a (you pick a name) motherboard, I bet someone could answer that. I am interested for a purely technical reason.

Hello there,

I'm trying to upgrade my wife's computer; the problem, however, is that she's running on a Dell XPS system that's about... two years, this December. The general specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium D 820 2.8Ghz
Video Card: 512Mb GeForce 7300GT

I'm trying to upgrade her system since we game a bit. Everything was fine until she started looking at Age of Conan. At the very least I know she needs more memory. I have a feeling she'll need a video card upgrade, but I'm going to do one thing at a time and start with the less expensive memory upgrade.

That being said, I'm having a little trouble getting the information I need to be certain I get compatible memory, and eventually, a compatible card. I just downloaded and ran CPU-Z to get some more specific information, but the damn motherboard is apparently made by Dell.

Dell 0YC523
Chipset: Intel i945P/PL/G/GZ

I'd like to bump her up to 4 gigs. She has four slots, but on the new computer I just built only two of the four slots seemed designed to accommodate normal memory. If her motherboard is the same then I'll need to buy 2 sticks of 2GB, instead of 2 sticks of 1GB.

So, I guess my question is, can her motherboard accommodate 4 sticks of memory, or only 2? Regardless of how many modules I can use, what kind of memory would you suggest?

I suppose I should also solicit video card suggestions since, as I said, I have a feeling her current card won't cut i... Read more

A:Dell Motherboard: Trying to find some information for upgrades

This is the nest memory really and guaranteed to match:
That's all she needs or I should say what will provide the best boost and if you put your model in, the configurator will show you what you can use.
Although 7300 GT is a weak card for gaming. You can pick up an 8600GT well priced these days under $100 with 512 ram onboard and various rebate deals that would also be a good idea.

1. HELP AND SUPPORT: Go to Start, click on "Help and Support" the Dell information is on the right side of the screen. You can also search for Microsoft help, but the Dell part of the screen has information that is actually written in English! Short-cut links are often provided by Dell on many new computer systems. Your desktop may show a "Dell Support" link, a "Solution Center Link", and an "Owners Manual" link. Additional a "Learn Windows XP" tutorial is provided on new Dell computers. It's an excellent tutorial and talks about many of the differences between Windows XP and older versions of 95/98.

2. HERE IS A LIST OF KNOWN DELL SUPPORT SITES: (Mods/admins please add or modify accordingly.) :This is Dell's main home page For questions relating to Dell orders and shipping. Note: The Help and Support option in XP does provide the opportunity to chat on-line with a customer care represenitive. (This is for orders only, and is for non-technical support issues.)

Tech support, driver downloads, updates can be found at Dell's homepage by providing your system information. For personalized support, you will need your system's service tag number and express service code.

My XPS15 9550 laptop today installed considerable updates that took much of an hour to finish.  Upon completion selecting the Dell Premier Color shortcut icon for premiercolor.exe, it no longer brings up a window as it used to.  I can still go into control panel Display then drill down several levels to get at advanced color settings.  So tried to find online a guide for using this but could not find anything after considerable searching.  Much Dell ad info about how it is useful and users with issues that makes finding real help like a needle in a haystack.  The System Info SW info shows the process running from start up.  Version shows
What I would like to read is user guide information for using the program.

I know a lot of you will laugh but here it goes. I have a real old IBM PC (one with only serial port, parallel port, & 1.4MB floppy drive) running Windows 98 on 64MB of RAM running my QuickBooks 99 software. It is not networked or connected to anything since I want to keep it completely virus free. Now it has come to the point the system can die on me at any time, I want to migrate to a new Windows 7 laptop running the current QuickBooks 2011. I just have no idea how to get my data files from the old PC to the new laptop without major operation. These data files are all about 6MB in size and I have about 100 of them. Any pointers that can help me accomplish this task will be highly appreciated.

A:Deleting Information On Computer, How?

Take out the hard drive and keep it for a secondary drive for your computer. Sell the old one with out a hard drive. There is no rule that you have to sell a computer with a hard drive but if you leave it in the computer with an operating system on it you are required to have the install software, manual if any and key code with it.

I had a simple question that can hopefully get answered very swiftly. I can't remember the name of a utility that people post here and on other tech forums all the time. I'm sure it's a simple answer, so if anyone can please post the name of the program I would be very appreciative.

I made a back up (option: all information on this computer) on a Windows XP Pro SP2 computer and given that this Windows XP is no longer repairable, I am thinking of rebuilding a new Win XP system and do a restore BUT does anyone know what this restore will include exactly?

Will this restore include: (1)personal data? (2)Settings? (3)Programs? (4) user accounts ..etc
Or what would be the best way of approaching a proper job of this PC?

Given that this is my live data I d be grateful to hear some professional advice before risking it and also the fact that the backup took a good 5hrs.

Many thanks

A:What does Restore 'all information on this computer' do exactly?'

Here's a good tutorial with pics that you can use to guide you in using Microsoft BackUp

It explains both what backing up "all information on this drive" does as well as what it puts back....

Restoring data
Now that the backups have been created, let's look at restoring them. Note that Windows XP Home cannot use the automated system recovery disk to restore itself, as described below. To recover XP Home backups in the case of an emergency, reinstall Windows, then install the backup utility and manually restore your previous backup.Click to expand...

If you have Win XP Home you have an install disk, so you can reinstall the operating system? Or, do you have some other way to reinstall Windows?

Had a compaq computer that just died on me ,and I didn't back up anything. Plugged in the hard drive to the new computer won't let me activate says it's offline ,but I am using same connection right now. Is there any way of getting around this I wanted to pick up my data on my hard drive. The old computer is died and I am not looking to fix it cause it is not worth the money.

A:Oem computer can't retrieve information.

<<Plugged in the hard drive to the new computer...>>

If you mean that you tried to move the hard drive from System System the main drive containing Windows...and it doesn't work...that should be expected. The drive from the Compaq system reflects the settings, drivers, and an approved XP install for your Compaq system...and that's the only system for which that install of Windows is valid.

If you mean that you attached the drive as a secondary drive and cannot access the data need to be clearer in expressing exactly what you have done.

Since I've been using my new system running Windows XP Home, I've noticed on sites that require log-ins, that I have to re-login all the time when I visit. It's like somehow now my computer is not remembering to automatically remember my log-in information. It may be due to the new firewall installed called CA Internet Security Suite. I tried changing the settings to "medium security", but when I check again, the setting all revert to "high security." This was not a problem with the old computer running Windows 98. What's causing this and is there a fix?

A:New Computer not remembering log-in information

check your firewall config to see if you are blocking cookies. They contain that logon info so if blocked you will have to re-enter your info

I am new here and hoping that someone can help me out.  I am not sure if I have a lingering problem, but I encountered something and wanted to report it and check if others have any experience with it.  I was on youtube actually watching videos about car repair when a pop-up that redirected me to a new webpage occurred (it was the web page of hxxp:// A pop-up box appeared saying I had been infected and it then gave me a phone number to call (866-915-6151).  When I tried to simply close the pop-up, it would go to one of those boxes that asked me if I really wanted to leave the page.  If I continued to try to leave the page, it would then bounce back to the original box each time.  I got caught in an endless loop and could not close my webpage or my browser or get to any other program or window on my computer.  I had to physically turn off the computer to escape.  I am now wondering if I might have a lingering issue from this?  Has anyone else encountered this issue and does anyone know about this site, phone number, and issue?  A google search revealed nothing and I am wondering if this is a new thing?  Any help or information would be appreciated!

Hi jstach These kind of websites/pages/pop-ups are known as "tech support scams". You can read quietman's article below on them to learn more. the web browser and then relaunching it usually eliminates the bogus warning message and is the best way to deal with these scams. If the browser freezes or hangs, you may have to close it with Windows Task Manager by selecting End Task. Afterwards, be sure to refresh (clear) your browser's cache. This is typically the reason security scanners do not find any malware on the computer after encountering these types of scams. These are web-based alerts, and therefore contained in your web browser. They usually don't drop any malware on your system, and you won't encounter the same one again (unless you don't clear your cache). So if you hit one, simply kill your web browser process to exit it and continue using your computer normally

The problem started a few months ago when I would attempt to go on to the internet the computer would pop up multiple internert pages, the same one, but I would have 3 or 4. Then it started freezing up when I would go to any location on the internert. But if I was sent something on the internet via email I could go on to the page from my email message, not a problem. Just recently I did this though and it allowed the first few pages and then started freezing up. I had a friend come over to try to find help me, he downloaded a free version of AVG Anti Virus and we found some stuff and deleted it, well I was told to put it in a vault, so I did. I just found the vault today and deleted it out of the vault, or it is called quarintine, I guess. The computer is now starting to slow up when I go on to do things on my email. Right now it is a little slow when I am in my files but not too bad. the freezing problem as far as going on to the internet is just as bad as before we got some threas out. I am scanning again as I am writing this on another computer. I am willing to just start all over again if you want to help me with that. I saved all of my important files and I am ready to crash this thing and rebuild. I still do have acess to email and files. There are not warning boxes or anything coming up on my screen.

Greetings: Some of you can recall that I had a problem with my computer navigating form quoted links on e-mails and basically the second click just produced a blank screen. My computer is back to normal now after I put together some pieces from a group of suggestions. Here is what I did; I uninstalled every program, went to Programs & Features and viewed updates and uninstalled every one that I could (not all would uninstall) including IE. I put my Windows 7 (upgrade from Vista to Windows Pro) disc in and proceeded to re-install it, successfully.. NOTE:( When I tried to do this when I first had the navigation problem, it wouldn't go.) After Windows 7 upgrade was finished installing, I went to see what version of IE i had an saw it was version 8. I then went to replace it with IE 10 and it wouldn't go because it requires Service pack 1 which probably was uninstalled during the earlier uninstalling  process. I then opted to go to IE 9 and it did download. I restarted my computer and was happy to see that my computer was back to normal and navigating again. I wanted to let you all know about this since it appears, from what I read, that his is a wide-spread problem and others could use this info. Thank You.

I specifically wanna know If I have a sound card and if I do which one and if I dont then what type of sound(the motherboard's integrated type). If anyone could point me to a utility that can help me identify it and perhaps tell me which drivers I need I would appreciate it.

A:Does anyone know how I can fiind out information abouy my computer?

Look for the audio source.

The first place to look is where you are plugging in your speakers on the back of the computer's case. If you are getting your sound from the same collection of connections where the keyboard and mouse connect you are using the integrated audio from the motherboard.

If you are getting your sound from a connection of one of the PCI slots then you have a sound card. You may have a connection for both. In this case you need to go into BIOS on startup and disable the integrated audio. The next time you restart windows should see your sound card as new hardware if it had not done so before. Hopefully windows should be able to provide suitable drivers on the spot.

If you have only one audio connection and it's on your motherboard the integrated audio may need to be enabled in BIOS.

If all else falis you'll need to open your case and find any identifing logos or part numbers on your motherborad and\or sound card and search the internet for drivers.

Hope this helps! I don't know of any utilities to tell you what you want... hopefully someone else has that info.

I've been through hell trying to get my computer to stop freezing. My computer is custom built (three years old) and it never had any freezing problems until about half a year ago. This is what I've done to try and cure the problem.

- Uninstalled IE and replaced it with Mozilla FireFox (this seemed to help a bit because Mozilla isn't using nearly as much memory to run the browser)

- Bought RegCure and regularly use it

- De-fragmented my C: drive

- Uninstalled any unnecessary programs and applications

- Recently updated my video drivers

This is the deal. When idle, my computer never freezes. I can leave it on all night/day, whatever and it won't freeze. It seems to lock up when I'm actually using the computer, mainly when I'm browsing on the internet or using media devices. For example, sometimes I'll download a video to watch or tamper with iTunes and the computer will randomly just lock up and I'll have to restart. Sometimes it will lock up constantly after restarting, then other times I can go hours without any problems. Now what else can I do!? Please help! My Hijack logs never get any responses, so is there anything I can do? Thank you.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

I've been trying to use a particular forum, but it seems like the forum is been stuck at Dec. 14, 2004. I can't type any new posts on it and I can't see any new posts (after Dec. 14th) either.

I searched other threads on this forum which led me to do several things:
1. ipconfig /flushdns
2. clear internet cookies
3. clear temporary internet files (all offline content as well)
4. run adaware in order to get rid of spyware

I still am unable to submit/receive any new information from the forum. Is there anything else that I could try that might solve my problem?

P.S. I use 3 other forums and they work just fine. And I haven't heard that anything is wrong with the forum, but if you guys think that is the case, then please search with the following text on google: animereactor forum. It will be the first link returned on google.

If you have any DMP files please use this method and upload them. If not check event viewer

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Event viewer (local) and look for errors listed in the last day, week, etc. Then go to the windows log>application tab. Finally the windows Logs>system tabs.

You want to look for all errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

No DMP files included in upload please try this method
We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

A:Transfering hard drive information to another computer

Yes, you can remove the old hard drive with your needed files, and purchase a USB laptop external case. Install the old drive in the external enclosure, and connect it to the new laptop. The external drive should be detected and your files should then be retrieveable

Alright well recently, as in the last couple of days, I have been having problems with my internet. At random intervals of the day my computer will tell me that it is connected to the modem but the modem is not connected to the internet. However when I look over at the modem all of the lights are on and flashing like they should be. The DSL light is on and the Internet light is flashing to show that it's working. Furthermore if I go into the setup page for the modem using my browser the status page there also tells me that the DSL is connected and that the LAN is connected as well.

This happens randomly and when it does I attempt to correct this myself by changing my static IP settings and DNS server settings. Eventually it does start working again but I don't know if it is because of something I actually fixed or by random luck. I hope you guys here can help me figure out this problem.

Hi guys.

First I'd like to say this is probably going to be a long post with a lot of info, some of which I may forget to include. Also, I'm not exactly the biggest computer genius out there, so please have patience!

I built this PC around 3 months ago and it worked fine for around 1 week. After that, I would occasionally get this problem where the computer freezes (the screen completely stops) and can only be fixed by the power/reset buttons:
The screen stops completely, but no visual defects are caused.
The mouse stops moving. Clicking the mouse buttons does nothing.
The 'num lock' and 'caps lock' keys on the keyboard become unresponsive.
Sounds becomes very distorted, but if you listen closely you can still hear the sound being played very slowly.
No noticeable difference in the speed of the fans in the case before or after crashing.
Strangely, the animation the mouse makes when loading something (the blue circle) still works
No dump files are made.
The system does not start responding if I wait.

A lot has happened since then in terms of troubleshooting and discovery so I'll list everything in chronological order:
I ran multiple MemTests (MemTest: RAM reliability tester for Windows) overnight multiple times with no errors found.
Used my computer normally with 1 RAM stick at a time, then tried using both sticks but in different slots.
I did stress tests on my CPU and GPU with no errors or crashes caused.
I updated my mobo and GPU drivers.
Reseated my GPU.

I'm trying to fix a friend's computer. It's a Dell XPS 400 and originally had Windows XP on it, however my friend installed a crack version of Windows 7. After relieving the case of a dust coat of fur, I discovered the graphics card was fried, so I replaced it with one I had from a previous build. I used CCleaner to wipe the harddrive and installed a legitimate copy of Windows Vista on it. But after returning the hard drive to its original spot, the computer only boots up to show me a screen containing the following message:

PNY Verto GeForce 8500 GT PCI-Express

512 MB RAM

Hitting any keys or clicking the mouse doesn't do anything.

Please help? Thanks!

I believe that system uses a btx mb and pw supply. The btx form factor boards were so problem prone that they were abandoned [in fact they were obsolete when dell built that system]

IMO it is not worth putting ANY money into a btx system. Most likely the board failed taking out the original video card AND probably the card you installed.

A:How do I make my computer's identity and information secure?

Catalysis I'm afraid you are asking the same thing that half the world is asking. If it was easy all of us would pipe up immediately. Unfortunately security is volatile, the bad guys always being ahead of the good guys. No matter what security program you have on board something or other will break it in time. Security and ease of use always conflict. Careful browsing can help a lot.As for Windows, well sandboxing and virtual machine techniques have a value. A small step I have taken is to use TinyWall, which is an interface to the Windows firewall: blocks everything each way unless you let it through. No popups but an Autolearn feature when you want it to use it. I've found it works well but as always with firewall type products you have to learn their little ways (but it doesn't take too long).Anything to do with advert blocking has security benefits (many viruses hang on the back of adverts). Of-course various websites will hate you for it.Downloading free programs often introduces unwanted goodies that can be as bad as viruses and open other doors. Some folk advocate the use of this program: the best programs to use if something does creep through still has benefits. To me the Minimum is ADWCleaner and MalwareBytes. There are many others including Junkware Removal Tool if you don't mind letting it do its thing without you being able to pick and choose what it removes.Always pop back and let us know the outc... I have a computer which has been badly infected with several viruses and java exploit trojans. Essentially makes the computer almost unusable. Any attempt to open any administratibe tools or programs brings up a windows explorer tab with the programs name asking if you would like to download. Restore and backup are all restricted.
I booted the computer with a Kaspersky disk to scan the computer and ask I suspected there was many infections. I removed them and rebooted the computer but the issues still persist so im assuming their are still viruses on the computer.
The persons computer is used in their business and its used to store documents and file taxes with. I am currently making a img copy of the hard drive with Clonezilla since these documents are very important. I am going to reinstall a clean copy of Windows 7 home premium on the computer. Now my question is how can I saftley extract these imporant files from the infected HDD copy without reinfecting the clean install? Im not going to personally spend all day going through this persons documents but would like to provide them with a copy of it to do themselves.
If I was to create a folder to put the old image file in on the clean install do you suspect that to cause issues?
Much appreciated.

A:Computer Trojan, confidental / sensitive information

Get a sector-by-sector copy in case you have to try undeleting the files, or a sector by sector backup (via Acronis boot disk or the like). Looks like you've got some type of ransomware on there and it may have encrypted the data files. If you reinstall before you get a sector-by-sector copy, you'll lose your chance to undelete.
As far as putting the data back goes, it may well depend on exactly what trojans are involved here.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.

A:Dell computer occasionally stuck on Dell screen

I would run a memory tester

Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.

I am also getting this message for the past few days. " is requesting permission to store information on your computer" Since there is no, I find the fact that this white box obstructs my youtube viewing experience very irritating.

While this link provided by Phantom010 is no doubt a valuable resource, I am not sure it answers the concerns of people getting this specific message when they are trying to watch a youtube video.

Frankly the message looks like it is coming from a source desiring to load a virus onto my computer. Has anyone been able to identify or trace back any virus related issues with/to this message? I mean why would I even be getting an adobe flash player message from a youtube video? is requesting permission to store information on your computer

For the past few weeks my computer has been randomly restarting. It is more common when I'm playing a game. I originally thought that my processor was hitting the shut down temp I set in bios, but I started recording the temp and the time after that it shut down, that temp was never reached. The only thing that gets recorded in the event viewer is that an improper shut down has occurred. This made me think memory but I tested it and it passed with 0 errors. I've also checked the SMART of my HDD with no errors or warnings. So I'm thinking now that it may be an issue with my mobo or my power supply. What else can I try, or how else can I more accurately diagnose the problem? Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

A:Computer randomly restarting, no useful information in event viewer

Use HWMonitor to check your min and max voltages while gaming for a few minutes and make sure that thwy aren't out of the norm.

Also, check your mobo for swelling, leaking, or hissing caps.

Clean system, thoroughly, with canned air.

I have just started getting this message on my comput er "The Licence information to use this software is not found.

A:AMD licence information error shows up on booting computer

What is the software to which this message refers? You may have a acquired a pest/nasty or three... Might be wise to run a few cleaners; all free, safe to use, regularly recommended here.adwcleaner: Junkware Removal Tool: installs the desktop, from where you run will open into a small dis style window; follow the instructions therein. It will reboot the system as pat of its process.malwarebytes: of the above are "free".Install each using the manual/custom option - NOT the proffered default/automatic option. Carefully watch for and uncheck any rechecked boxes (apart for the actual utility itself). That way you avoid installing all manner of junk items; changes to your settings etc.

Hey all,
Preparing to install an xp operating system on a hard drive in an older computer and I am having a little difficulty setting the cd drive to open first, when I boot up it returns to the floppy drive.
Also BIOS seemed to have lost information on the first two hard drives (it is now showing no drive) but they continue to work ok. Is this because its an older computer, can I go in and re-enter the information? If so how would I do that?
Thank you.

A:Pulling up BIOS information/settings on an older 2001 computer

well first you need to give us more information such as the brand of the computer.Edit:also if you could include the name of the bios vendor/manufacture of the bios software.

I'm very newbie when it comes to this stuff, so what kinds of information should you provide about your computer to help them solve the problem? Also, where would you find this information on your computer? D:

I remember reading somewhere that certain information you shouldn't give out, which is why I'm asking.

Edit: Just realized this is probably less of a tip and more so belongs in the "games" section, but I don't know how to switch the location. >.<

I've tried to install with a disc, from a usb all that jazz, everytime I go through 'Windows activated setup is copying temporary files...' then 'Window activated setup is starting...' then I get the same error 'Windows could not retrieve information about the discs on the computer.
I've backed up all my data so I'm good to do a clean installation, I've tried booting from the disc(does nothing, boots normally) and booting from the usb(I get to sit around forever staring at a flashing cursor, apparently going nowhere)
I'm running XP Pro service pack 2, I've met all the requirements for 7.
I've unplugged and disable all unnecessary drives and what not(floppy drive, second disc drive, etc)
I've flicked through half a million pages talking about how to resolve this problem on Vista and XP, none of which helped at all, a few advised enabling the 'Virtual Disk' service, brilliant I apparently don't even have that.
Someone please save my computer from a very short flight off the top of a very tall building.
I'm not a computer tech or anything, I'd like to think I'm pretty clued in but for conveniences sake could any advise be extremely detailed in step-by-step form, just to save me from having to make a 'How do you get to that?' post and someone having to reply to it.

A:Window 7 installation failure, 'Windows could not retrieve information about the discs on this computer'

Hi AlecHetho,
Based on my experience, this error usually can occur because the VDS service is set to disabled. To resolve it,  we need to enable the “Virtual Disk” service. Please refer to the following steps:
1)       Click Start / Run and type SERVICES.MSC
2)       Look for the Virtual Disk Service
3)       Right click it and choose "Properties"
4)       Change the Startup Type to Manual, then click the Start button.
5)       Reboot and try the upgrade again.
If there isn’t Virtual Disk Service listed, you can take the following steps to populate the disk information:
1)       Click Start / Run and type devmgmt.msc
2)       Expand the Disk drives and double click the disk.
3)       Click Volumes on  the disk Properties.
4)       If the volumes information are blank, click Populate.
5)       Insert the Windows 7 installation disc and launch Setup.exe
Best Regards

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?

My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer

Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.

Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.
I couldn't quite find anything that might lead me to an answer..?

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

A:Dell Computer PC will not load Windows install CD from computer crash

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Clear the CMOS:Use your system manual to find instructions for accessing the BIOS...
In the BIOS, go to the EXIT screen...
Choose load setup/optimized defaults... Read more

I’ll try to explain, I hope you will understand.

When I click on “Computer”, using windows 7-64
I get “favorites” that has my desktop info,
Plus I get down below after my drives, the files that are on my Desktop.
I used to only see “desktop, my documents, and my drives.
Not all the desktop information was below that.

How can I not see the desktop information below my drives, or is it possible.
I think that may be in “folder options”, or “Organize”, but I’m not sure
I tried them all, but could not remove the desktop information below drives.

I don’t want to delete them, but just don’t want to see them below my removable drives, or hard drives.

You guys sure do help me out a lot, and it is appreciated.
