I kind of miss the XP OS setup where it makes you assign the admin password during setup. Am I missing the place to do that in a Win7 setup or is it just done after the install? Thx!
On Windows 7, from the experience of test installs, you set up the administrator information during the setup process. It's when you enter your Admin Username, I don't see how you could have missed that.
But there is always "Account Control" in the Control Panel.
When isntalling Win 7 after a few screens it asks for a "Setup Password for Account" but I THINK thats just for the user account isnt it? XP install used to specify this was specifically an administrator password. Isnt that one on the Windows 7 install end-target user password? Thanks.
That will be the default user "System Admin." if this is what you are asking, there is another ADMINISTRATOR acct but it is recommended not to enable that acct for every-day use, it does away with all the Windows built-in safeguards.
I bought a laptop on ebay. I can not get into BIOS because it asks for a setup admin password, which I do not know. It is a Dell Vostro 3700. The seller did not know the previous owner, therefore no idea what the password is.
Can anyone help me work around this?
Power off and detach power from wall socket first!!
Pull out the CMOS battery from motherboard. Wait 10 minutes and put it back.
Attach power again and power on. Be sure to set time correct afterwards and adjust any BIOS settings you want.
I have a Dell Latitude D630. It has an admin password for the bios. Nothing is locked except for the settings. I can't change any of the settings in the bios. It lets me boot to windows just fine though. My question is, since I don't know that admin password for the bios, if I upgrade the bios firmware, will the admin password be deleted? Since I'm flashing the bios, I would think that all the settings will be lost. Is that the case?
Didn't you reply here, and say it worked (after the unusual 9th try ) http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic109612-109.html#post747024

In the process of installing windows 7 Professional I discovered that I could not get into the BIOS or setup because it was password protected. I?ve tried a number of things including installing HP ProtectTools Security stuff and it seems that all that has done is to create more login passwords. I can now get into setup but as a user but not as an administrator and so I cannot change password. There is also another screen that shows up where I must enter a password and I?m not sure if that?s happening because of the HP Protect Tools that I installed and then removed or because of something in the BIOS. I?ve uninstalled HP Protect Tools and reinstall windows 7 and I still see both password screens. I attempted to update the BIOS using a file downloaded from the HP support website but cannot because I don?t know the admin password for access the BIOS.

Dear Customer, Welcome to HP Support Forum and we are glad to assist you. This is to inform you that all HP Business Notebooks such as Probooks or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models infact they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial Number and thecode is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case. Please have a look at this link. http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/49497-HP-Probook-Elitebook-BIOS-Password-Reset-Utility Replace the BIOS chiphttp://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Elitebook-8470p-8470w-8570p-8570w-8770w-Programmed-Bios-Chip-No-Password-... Hello, I'm needing a BIOS reset password. The current halt code is 5C533F4A. I have tried https://bios-pw.org/ and the results do not work. Thank you.-Timothy
Hi, Your notebook is producing a hexadecimal halt code which is stored in ram as a 'one off' and will be re-calculated after a reboot. This indicates you have one of the later AMI bios's and unfortunately none of the current code generators will work for this - surprisingly, you can still remove a power on password from the machine by removing the rtc cell ( leave the power board connected ) then hold down the power button for 60 seconds before re-inserting the rtc. The bad news is that the rtc is on the 'wrong' side of the system board so will require quite a lot of disassembly - see Page 115 of your Maintenance & Service Guide. Regards, DP-K7 more replies

Hi, You can use the below link to generate the BIOS password reset key. Enter the System Halt code or the Serial Number of the unit to generate one. You can: 1. Use the unlock code you generated to enter the BIOS2. Disable all passwords that are enabled in the BIOS's security menu.3. If asked for current password - type the unlock code4. For new password, just press ENTER key5. Repeat the same for verify password column.4 more replies
We have two XPS12 9Q33 units that have the BIOS Admin password set, but no one left in the department knows the password. We've tried all the normal variants to no avail.
Yesterday I spoke with out of warranty support, and the gentleman was unable to help as from his documentation this computer has a Phoenix BIOS, while in reality all the units we have are AMI BIOS. We have 12 of these units, but only these two have the admin password set.
Does anyone know of a way to reset the BIOS ADMIN password? Not the system password, we have that, it's specifically the ADMIN password. Support yesterday was very frustrating in trying to get them to simply listen to what our problem was so I gave up on that and came here.

If your trying to change a bios setting or Reformat any of the newer Dell Laptop's you may run into this issue! There is an Administrator password you will be prompted for. I believe this is created at the factory and unplugging the bios battery no longer does the trick! I tried many different passwords combos and found that:
<dell> all lowercase and minus the brackets works for a few of the newer Dell Laptops
That makes no sense at all. If it were true then Dell would have to provide the password as part of the information it provides to customers when they buy the laptop. Anything else would subject them to being sued.1 more replies

I have an older HP900 laptop which is a nice size to take in our motor home. However, it overheats after running for about 15 minutes. I understand there is a bios update that turns the cooling fan on sooner but I can't get into the bios because of password protection. Any ideas on how to crack the password or any pins to short to reset it?
The laptop will run fine if I rais it off the table and have a fan blowing on it from behind. Cooling fan in laptop runs, but it only comes on shortly before a shutdown if I am not running an additional fan blowing under it.
thanks for any ideas or help

HP PAVILION AB-063CL Locked with BIOS ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD. Message after 3 attempts states: SYSTEM DISABLEDA [6087979E] How can I disable this? Thank you!
The bad news is that the rtc can be on the 'wrong' side of the system board so will require quite a lot of disassembly. Regards, DP-K4 more replies
My notebook is locked because of a password on the bios. I just forgot my password, and I'm desperate. When I turn on the notebook, the following message appears: P0: HGST HTD5450 - Enter User Password.I try the 3 times, and appears: HDD is LOCKED!The notebook then restarts, and now the message that appears is: ENTER PASSWORD.I put the wrong password three times, and after the third time, is caught in the message: INVALID PASSWORD. Nothing more. I can not use all, or type. Only restarting.* Have I removed the lithium battery, and left for three days without .. no result* I have also removed the notebook battery (left without both) and also uneventfully. Please help meMore replies
I have recently acquired a Dell Optiplex GX110 with a setup password in place and I cannot get past it. I have tried to figure out the password and also tried to to reset to BIOS. I don't want to do anything legally wrong, just reset the password. The reason I am trying to do this is the boot sequence is wrong and I cannot change it unless I get past the setup password, which I can't do. How can I legitimately get past the setup password?
Unfortunately we have a rule here at TSG that we do not assist with bypassing any types of passwords because we cannot verify the true intention or owner of the computer. Therefore I must close this thread.
so I get a fatal error earlier today, something like "you will need to reinstall windows" in one of those white boxes with the weird font. I didn't believe it at first...
now I cannot boot up my computer. I'm assuming my harddrive died (which I've only had for a few weeks, it's going back to the store)...
But here is the kicker... my bios setup won't let me in. All of a sudden, it needs a SETUP PASSWORD. I've never set a setup password before. and I've never been asked for a setup password, ever.
any ideas? I found a few sites that help you get around this, with default passwords to try, etc. but none of them worked.
any info would be great,
Hi and welcome. Anyone else have access to the computer who may have entered a setup password?

@belmond Contact HP and they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password. http://welcome.hp.com/country/w1/en/contact_us.htm??l When talking to the HP rep ask them to escalate your service request. Or download these files. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zu4kdgxm052l87d/AAAMi-k??fX4AVH8oTCbsOM4X9a?dl=0 Insert clean USB flash drive. Then run USB Image tool. Choose the flash drive then click on RESTORE. After restore remove flash drive. Insert flash drive into locked laptop and boot. ?If HDD is installed remove before booting.? At C:\OUTPUT type CD.. ?Then hit enter? Type HPBR ?Then hit enter? First thing is to save your settings. Select #3 re-program. Press ?S? to save system information. Type HPBR and hit enter. Select ?FIRST RUN? Then select model. After reboot repeat same as above but this time SELECT ?SECOND RUN? Hello every one,
Few days ago i set a admin password on my laptop Bios and now i forget that password is there any way to unlock my Bios setup?
I contacted the re-seller form which i bought this laptop but they say they are unable to generate any kind of master password to unlock Bios . but they say they can try unlocking by removing Bios CMOS cell from Motherboard but m afraid of loosing or crashing of my Bios. so can any one help me here on this issue how can i unlock my Bios????
I also tried every combination or every password i think i just set but please help me what can i do on this issue???
Waiting for a good and positive response against this thread.
Please help me with your system ID and the system service tag, which will be seen on the BIOS screen. If you do not get the system ID, try entering an incorrect password multiple times and you will see the System ID.
Please revert with this information for us to provide you with a master password.
Thanks & RegardsRakesh R #iworkfordell
