Freeze, alt control delete doesn't work, lose all icons

Q: Freeze, alt control delete doesn't work, lose all icons

I am hoping someone on this forum can help me. I have a Thinkpad X60s, about a year old and I am running XP. Randomly my computer becomes sluggish so I try closing programs. I then figure out that one program is frozen (come to think of it, that program may always be IE) and I can't close it. I then try to warm boot with ALT CONTROL DELETE but it doesn't work. In fact, instead of getting the task manager, my screen saver comes up without any icons on my desktop. I have no cursor and can't do anything but unplug or take out battery and manually crash the computer. It then will start normally though it takes longer for the icons to appear.

I regularly download both IBM and Windows updates, I defrag regularly, do virus scans etc using Norton 360. I also have run Think Pad Productivity Center maintenance tasks.

Other than that and the slugglishness the computer runs ok.

Any help out there? I am frustrated and IBM has not been able to help, except by telling me to change the hard drive or send it to them.

A: Freeze, alt control delete doesn't work, lose all icons

Yes I think this is a hard drive issue too. Check to see how much space you have left on it. Go to My computer and right-click on the C drive icon. Click Properties... Also, you might consider checking the hard drive with a utility like Seatools from Seagate. IBM notebook drives are noted for their high failure rates...

Back up your important data please, ASAP

Good luck

I can't use my Control with any other key to copy, cut, paste, or
bring up task manager.

Help please and thanks, Mary

Here is my hijackthis text file.

A:Control/C Control/V control/alter/delete doesn't work

Mary, keyboard problems are not invariably software or malware-related. First things first - what OS are you talking about ? XP, Win 7, Win 8 or what? What type of keyboard is it? PS2, USB or wireless?

Disconnect it and reconnect it a few times, reboot and try again. Turn the keyboard upside down, placing one end on the edge of a thick book, and thump a few times on the back with your hand. Sweep the crud onto the carpet.....

Is it just a keyboard hardware problem, and if so which keys? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-7 tells you a lot of key combinations with ctrl and shift and alt. Tell us if any or none work?

Open a document and try typing a bit of text. Do all the characters work?

If it appears the keyboard is faulty, can you borrow another to test?

Quite often, keyboard problems are down to wireless problems: and can often be solved by re-installing the keyboard driver.

Through out the day, I have my computer on. Many times... whether I am using the computer at that moment, or if I leave and come back later... my screen will be frozen. The mouse moves, but nothing on the screen can be clicked. Also, control alt delete works as well, so I have found that if I go into the applications tab and open a new task and open/refresh "explorer" everything will start working again. So there is a work around, but it gets a little frustrating. Any ideas about why this would be happening?

I have recently built my computer... Windows XP... this has been hapening for about 1 1/2 weeks now. Thanks!

welcome to the forums
Maybe its just hanging up because you leave it sitting so long. Have you thought about letting it go standby when it sits for say ten minutes? Then when you come back and touch the mouse, it picks up right where you left off. To do that, right click anywhere clear on your desktop and select properties, select screensaver, then select power settings, then you can set it to turn off monitor after five or ten minutes, my hard drives are set for never turn off and system you can set for whatever you want, I am set for standby after 15 minutes...doc

Not sure if ths belongs here or in the security thread??

I could swear I've seen similar problems on this forum, but I did a search and didn't come up with anything.

3Ghz Pentium 4 512 MB of RAM running XP Pro. Last night a user on this PC installed MS updates, by logging off via the "install updates and shut down" option. When she came in this morning, the PC didn't respond to control + alt + delete. She asked me for help in logging on. I clicked on the help link in the control alt delet prompt, and the password prompt came up!?

The MS update button(at the bottom right corner of the screen - not sure what this is called) on her login still had the exclamation point on it, so I clicked on it to install the updates again. It installed and prompted for a restart. So I clicked on the restart now option. Nothing happened. I went to Start->shutdown, and nothing happened. I hit control alt delete, and nothing happened.

Ran spyware checks via spybot and ad-aware and they only turned up cookies. I am in the process of running a virus check right now.

My userid on the same computer has no problems. When I hit control alt delete, I get the standard prompt.

When I click on My Computer either on Desktop or in the Start menu folder, a screen appears as shown here. But I can access these items from the Windows explorer icon on the task bar!!
Also whenever I click on any folder or drive in My computer window, the contents open in a new window and I end up in a large number of windows opened by the time I reach a file or a folder.
How can I fix this?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Sounds like you may have a virus.

If you can, boot into Safe Mode with Networking and run a full virus scan.

Dear All,

First of all, I would like to apologize if my post is not on the right place.

Last couple of days, suddenly my McAfee stop working and the small icon disappear from the icon tray. Everytime I try to click (run) from the explorer, the folder was "Not Responding" hence I shut-down through task manager and run a new task "explorer".

Worried that it might be due to a virus, I run a Trend Micro House Call (online) but it stops.

I downloaded the AVG Virus removal tool, but it reported as clean.

I browse on the internet and was "told" to run on SAFE MODE, but it was not successfull as the computer stop (with blue screen with messages). so I ran it normally again.

I completely have no idea what to do ..

Thanks for your assistance, very much appreciated.

Regards

Hello, thanks for taking the time to look into this issue.I have Windows XP Pro Corp, SP-3 and have just re-installed a fresh copy on my Dell Dimension 4500. It is updated up to SP3 and everything appears to be running normally. However, in checking the Control Panel in category view and going into the Performance and Maintenance, then into Administrative Tools, I click on Admin Tools and sometimes the shortcut works, other times not. The start navigation click is heard, but the window does not go into Admin Tools. The same with Scheduled Tasks. I click on it to open it, however the start navigation click is heard but the window does not open Scheduled Tasks. It can work occasionally, but other times it simply sits on the Performance and Maintenance screen. In Classic View it is the same case. All the icons are there, I click on Administrative Tools and sometimes the shortcut works, other times not. The start navigation sound is heard but the option does not execute. If I right click those functions and hit Explore they work every time. I created an administrative tools folder in the start menu and all the shortcuts function normally. No problems. But inside the control panel is entirely different. The left click "open" command is what is at fault I think, being intermittent. The other control panel options all work normally. I thought at first it may have been another program blocking the access to those shortcuts. I have PC Registry Mechanic 10.0, Glary Utilities,... Read more

A:Control Panel Icons Work Intermittently

You may have already messed up the registry by using Registry Cleaners, they should never be used and can do more harm than good, don't believe all the hype that the manufacturers try and tell you, they are a waste of money.

One thing that is not quite clear from your opening post is if the shortcuts were working when you first re-installed Windows and have since failed.

Were there any other problems with the performance of the PC that prompted you to re-install Windows?

I'm running Microsoft professional, Internet Explorer and have a Google toolbar.

All attempts to add software are blocked and the add remove feature in the control panel won't open. For example, I can't update my old version of Itunes because the popup for the update gets blocked. I know about the popup blocker in the Google toolbar, and how to handle that, that isn't the problem. In Internet Options, the security setting is at medium and under the advanced tab I reset all options to default.

What version of IE are you using?

What other security programs do you have on the computer? It's possible that one of them is blocking the pop-ups.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 and I have all my sound drivers installed (I can get sound just fine in every app), but I can't control the main volume in the Volume Control. I can adjust the volume with the Wave slider, but the main one doesn't do anything, including mute. Individual applications' volume controls work fine too, just not the main Windows one. It wouldn't be a problem, but it might be the reason why I'm not getting any volume on the Stereo Mix recording option. I just finished a clean install of XP (for a different reason) and it wasn't working before, either. Any ideas?

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows 7 on my notebook PC. I had to use a Microsoft installation disk because unfortunately, serious errors resulted after I installed from the HP recovery program. Consequently the HP drivers that were installed automatically with the recovery program weren't installed on my system. I had to install several of them from the HP support site. I got everything to work except for the Touch volume control, or the Volume Scroll Zone as referred to by HP in the service guide. This is the device located just above the keyboard that increases or decreases speaker volume when you drag you finger on it. I installed the Quick Launch button driver but that only applied to the mouse and pointer touchpad. I looked at the devices listed in my startup configuration. Hi

Since upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit I can't turn the volume all the way down by using the volume control at the front of the notebook. Worked fine under Vista 32 bit.
The volume control still works but no matter how far I wind it to the left there is still sound coming from the speakers.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

A:Tecra P5 - Volume control doesn’t work properly

As far as I know volume control in the past was mechanical but now it works on different way and it is controlled by specific tool/utility.
To be honest Tecra P5 is not known to me but obviously it is Australian notebook model and according to Australian support page this notebook model is not supported for Windows 7.

That doesn?t mean you cannot use it but this means there is not software package designed for Windows 7 that can be installed so I think there is no much you can do about it.

I know it is annoying but for volume control you can use Windows option placed in task bar.

Hi,
I recently noticed that my ctrl+a doesn't work. All the other ctrl combinations do! Ctrl+a doesnt allow me to "select all" while word processing or use this combination in games (first person shooters).

I have a logitech G15 and other keyboards and they all dont allow me to use ctrl+a. I have tried different versions of keyboard drivers for my G15 and without. I plugged the keyboard into another W7 and it works

Im assuming this is an issue with my OS now.

I know reinstalling windows is a option but want that to be the last resort as i only reformatted last month(i think it only started occurring when i reformatted)

EDIT: I have fixed my issue - it turns out my user account was corrupted, so I had to make a new one and copy all my documents folder over!

I don't know what happened, but one day I was typing away and my delete key just suddenly stopped working! I removed the button and tried pressing it other ways, but it still didn't work. Now I can't delete anything (which is what I do a lot of the times) and I can't use ctrl+alt+del anymore!!!

Someone PLEASE help me on this one! I won't want to have to change keyboards because this is the best one I have (that I bought at a semi-high price/semi-low price). I reloaded the program for the keyboard, but when I first plugged it in it didn't need to be loaded up.

It's a Logitech keyboard, a kinda' nice one too...

Hi,
Occasionally, when resume from hibernation/suspend, display brightness control doesn't work. Means that Fn + F2,F3 doesn't work, change from Windows Power Options doesn't work, change from intel graphic doesn't work.
Anyone know if I have to restart some services to get it working? It's occasional and I can't find anything exact in EventLog.
My system is HP Probook 4230s with Core i5-2410 with intel HD3000. Latest patches on both Win 7 Pro 32-bit and intel driver.
Restart machines solve the problem, re-hibernate or re-suspend machine occasionally solve the problem, but mostly not.

I already uninstalled and installed the driver several times from the CD and I downloaded it and installed it too and the problem persists.

I just spent the last 30 hours downloading and installing all the update for 8.1 on my new Acer Laptop. Now the system will not shut down, update will not open and restore does not work. Also the sound system does not work. I've tried the recovery options but all I get is unending aero. Shutdown produces background apps still running and will only work if I physically turn off the power.

I'm at a loss to know what to do next. I did not expect to have these problems with a brand new system and by following all the proper procedures for updating.

Hi all,

Just started experiencing this problem a few days ago. No idea what caused it.

The delete key on my keyboard(s) no longer works. I've tried 3 different keyboards (which I know to function), and pressing the delete key (either one, on the numpad or above the arrow keys) doesn't have any effect.

Even on the on-screen keyboard, it doesn't work!

Strange thing is though, CTRL+ALT+DEL works. SO for some reason, the delete command just isn't registering when I press the delete key.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard and software, no results. I'm using a MS Comfort Curve keyboard, but also tested on a Logitech Wave and an old PS/2 keyboard.

I've searched all over and haven't found anyone with a similar issue.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks much,
-Dirk

I have a account on Netscape mail (eg [email protected]). I have never had any problem with this account before but for the last few days the delete function doesn't work. That is, when I try to delete an e-mail after reading it, it doesn't delete.

I think this must be a problem on the server rather than on my PC right? Is anyone else having this problem?

I tried reporting it to Netscape but there doesn't seem to be any address for reporting this stuff on the site. When I finally found a tech support address that I thought might work, I just got a formletter back saying they don't provide assistance to netscape.net accounts.

Thoughts?

A:Delete doesn't work in Netscape Mail

It appears now that this is a Firefox issue.

Recently, I have been able to access Netscape Mail and use the delete function through Internet Explorer.

Only thing I can figure is that something in the recent Firefox update affected this capability. However, it works in FF for other mail accounts, so it's a puzzle to me.

Hi! First of all, I don't know if it can have something to do with it, but I installed UxThemePatcher and some themes on my computer. A few days later, I noticed that my Skype icon went missing. Then I opened my Start menu and realized that almost ALL my programs' icons were gone, replaced by standard .exe file icon. Just so you know, I've already tried to rebuild the IconCache.db file with a .bat script that I found on another forum and that apparently solved everyone's problems, but it didn' work for me. Well it did... but about 20 minutes later, they went missing AGAIN...

Please help me!

A:Icons went missing and rebuild IconCache.db doesn't work... HELP!!

Welcome to Seven Forums Yann906

Not sure if the other site used the same method, but try Brink's method first

Icon Cache - Rebuild

Do you have a System Restore point from before the change? That may be easiest

System Restore

You can also run the System File Checker, be aware it will undo the UxThemePatcher and customizations made after

   Warning
Be aware that if you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc /scannow will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to it's default state. Make the appropriate backups of your system files that you have modified for theming if you wish to save them before running sfc /scannow.

Hi, I had some issues with a HDD around this time last year, so I replaced it with a new western digital HDD. I wasn't able to back anything up, so I cloned it instead.

turns out I installed the incorrect driver for my video card and suffered from the BSOD syndrome....

well, I finally got that sorted out, ( I think ) and now I am trying relentlessly to get catalyst pro control center to work properly. Ive read numerous places online that involves editing the Assembly folder, but I have no such keys in there.

when I try and run CCC, it tells me that I am unable to run as I wouldn't be able to change any settings within the app basically. Ive tried uninstalling, installing. trying ATI opposed to AMD- to no anvil.

Hello, I have a problem with connecting my SE K700i cell phone with Windows 7 notebook via bluetooth. I have paired them, file transfer is available, the problem is remote control (HID profile) - when trying to connect either desktop, presenter, kmplayer or any other, it always shows "Bluetooth connection failed. One thing you may want to check is the control panel/accessibility options and make sure nothing is checked in there. Sometimes the accessibility settings for the keyboard will play havoc with what you think should be happening with keys.

I was running Microsoft Security Essentials when it just froze 1/2 way through a quick scan. The mouse still could move, clicking to stop or close out didn't do anything either. Also Ctrl + Alt + Delete also did nothing. I waited 5 minutes. Nothing. Had to pysically shut down.

Other times I have not been able to click start > shut down. Sometimes I can wait a minute or two and finally things will work again.

Is this indicative of some other process running? Possible a virus? RAM problem? Could a motherboard going bad cause this? Also this customer's BIOS became corrupted for some reason, as the computer would not start before I reseated the battery to get the computer to start again. The battery tested normal at 3.06 V. So I'm still trying to rule out hardware.

I went away for the weekend, and when I came back and turned on my computer there were a ton of problems seemingly out of nowhere.

On startup it displayed the "Windows failed to shut down normally" screen, which was strange because I had shut it down normally before leaving and nobody else could have used it. So I clicked "Start Windows normally".

Then when it got to the desktop there was immediately an error of the ATI catalyst control center, and also "MOM.exe - .NET framework initialization error, unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application". When I tried opening Google Chrome it said that some part of the application was corrupt, same with GNotifty. My AVG antivirus was also marked with a caution sign saying "you are not protected".

Hoping it was just a fluke, I restarted, and Windows presented me with the option to do a Startup Repair during the boot, which I did. It ran for about 45 mins, and then loaded to the desktop to present the same errors, only this time there are desktop icons missing randomly and the mouse doesn't work. I tried changing USB ports for the mouse, as well as trying another mouse, and it still doesn't work.

Next impulse was to run memtest from a bootable CD, so I tried opening my optical drive and strangely it registers the button push and displays a green light but just doesn't open.

Is there a way to merely have text-links on the desktop and do away with all the
icons? I'm a web designer and it takes me forever to find software while wading through a screen full of icons with text. I'd rather just have text links that I have organized in some way by their logical inter-relationships. Is that possible in Windows 7?

A:Lose the Icons

Welcome!

I do not believe that is possible, unfortunately. You can change the icon size, however. The easiest way to do that is hold down CTRL while scrolling with the mouse wheel.

The Windows 7 search is also very helpful now; you may be able to find things much quicker than you could in earlier versions of Windows.

After my computer has been on for a while (hour? two hours? not sure...) I'll notice that some of the icons in the menu bar of a program start to disappear. I'll use Internet Explorer as an example. First some of the menu buttons disappear, then the graphics and text on the webpage I'm viewing will go missing. When I try to click on programs to close them, they sometimes will freeze. When I try to reopen them, I get the following kinds of error messages.

"CiceroUIWndFrame: Winword.Exe Application Error. The exception unknown software software exception (0xc06d007e) occurred in the application at the location 0x7c812afb" I think this is when trying to restart the Word software.

"Excel.exe-bad image. The application or DLL C:\ProgramFiles\Common Files\Microsoft shared\office11
mso.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." This message occurred when trying to open Excel. I clicked OK in the error dialog and the same message popped up again. Then when I clicked OK a new error popped up that read: "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application."

"C:\Program Files|GIMP-2.0\bin\gimp-2.6.exe is not a valid win32 application."

If I force quit Windows and restart the computer, I regain complete functionality for awhile, but then the problem reoccurs and I have to restart.

A:Programs start to lose graphics, freeze, and can't restart

More info after more careful observation:

The computer was on for 3 hours 10 minutes this time before problems started to crop up. Before that time, all was normal.

First, the webpage I was viewing started showing blank spots (numbers of a numbered list only, but not the text). Then when I moused over the tabs (I had three open) they lost their background color. Then when I clicked on another tab, they lost their text labels, too (where the page title was listed). When I moved the cursor around the open IE window, the text randomly startied blinking on and off. Then the tab in the status bar at the bottom of the window lost its text and eventually diappeared all together. Eventually, all text was lost and only pics remained on the google news page. When I moused over the Start button, the text disappeared. When I click the Start button, nothing happens and all the icons on the desktop disappear. At this point, I force quit the computer by holding down the power button to turn it off. Total elapsed time at this point was about 10 minutes of observing the malfunction.

After restart, I reopened up IE. So far, so good. Opened up Excel to see if it would open. It did, but it showed the Document Recovery pane with a file I had been working on earlier in the day, however, I had saved the file already closed the program long before I force quit the computer. The really weird thing was there was also a file in the Doc Recovery pane called "XL8GALRY.XLS" with a location of... Read more

Hi

I have an issue that seems to be popping up whenever I play any game (have only tested a couple, will test more once I have posted).

Its a complete freeze (although sound continues), and if i try to tab out of ctrl-alt-del it does one of two things: nothing, or, screen goes black. I have had to hard reset each time. It didnt seem to like the hard reset either and I think in two of the four resets resulted in a blank screen again - another hard reset after a few minutes and it seemed to boot ok.

I have followed BSOD instructions, but not sure if that will help in these circumstances. I have also added the problem details.

Whenever I try to open a file with a program such as Winamp, the programs now "arranges the icons" in some funky random arrangement instead of arranging them by name (or by type, or modified) or whichever order I had preset. When I tell it to "arrange icons by" name or whatever other options, it arranges them....until I try to open something else. Then it's back to the funky random arrangement.

This only happens when trying to access a file from a different program. When I access the folder through Windows, it remembers the arrangement perfectly. Any clue as to what's going on here?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

When I open, save or whatever, with any software like Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc, the files are not arranged by name like they should be.

I select arrange by name and they do. But next time I go to open something, they are all over the place again.

This came about when I turned XP's indexing off. (I turned it back on but it didn't fic the prob.)

I have tried everything to no avail.

Explorer works fine. Everything is arranged how I want. Word, Exel etc are OK. Just other vendors software is where the problem occurs.

Anyone know a fix for this perplexing problem?

Thanks.

My dad was recently doing some work on this computer and he REALLY changed the settings in Word around. I was able to get most of them back to how I like it, except one.

When I highlight text and click "delete" to erase it or highlight it and start typing to replace it... it doesn't work. It's like some "text protector" where it doesn't delete it.

How do I fix it back to the original way? (I remember this happening once before).

For most of you this might be a silly question, but I am honestly very ignorant on computer matters. What is your recommendation on a Program for storing my pictures and make some easy editing without the sophistication of Photoshop too complicated for me ?

I recently moved a handful of shortcuts to my desktop and was disappointed to see that they lost their icon in the process (they became blank document icons). A google search brought me here where it was suggested that I download repair software or attempt to repair the system icon file manually. The following two solutions were both successful and much simpler:

1) Reassign the shortcut icon. Right click the shortcut and select Properties, go to the Shortcut tab, click on the Change Icon button at the bottom, select the icon, click OK, click Apply.

2) Create a new shortcut. Right click the shortcut and select Open File Location, right click the exe and select Create Shortcut, move that newly created shortcut to the desktop.

I'm not sure why Win 8.1 likes to destroy my shortcut icons when they go to the desktop, but one of these two solutions usually works for me.

Hi.. wondered if any techies out there can help me. I down loaded a editing software called " Power sound editor" for windows. I have windows vista home premium.

I've never used the program before and seems a lot more complicated than others that I have seen. Anyway I was recording my voice for a voice acting demo. Spent an hour free styling and was very pleased with the out come. However I forgot to save it before attempting to edit it.

I did something funky and the program stopped responding so my question is.... is there any way to retrieve my unsaved file? I haven't closed the window and it's still thinking after 6hrs.

Note: however I did put the comp into sleep mode during 5 of these hours

I'm running Windows 8.1 64bits.

I have noticed since a couple of days ago that my Control+Tab shortcut does not work anymore. Not on text editors, not on web browsers, not on property pages, nowhere.

Control+Shift+Tab (reverse tab navigation) still works.

I have checked the results on an application called "Ethervane ActiveHotkeys". In there, it states that Control+Shift+Tab is not an active hotkey but that Control+Tab IS. I assume that some application decided to globally pick up Control+Tab for itself.

I have tried restarting (and testing as quickly as possible before all programs load), I have tried closing down all applications that the task manager will let me and still the shortcut does not work.

I tried going to msconfig and disabling all programs and non-Microsoft services with no luck, but if I start Windows 8 in Safe Mode then Control+Tab works again.

I tried running Hotkey Commander; it shows Control+Tab as being bound by some application, but does not show which application it is. If I delete/disable the hotkey binding from inside Hotkey Commander then it works again until I restart.

I'm stumped as to how to troubleshoot this further and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:Control+Tab does not work anywhere anymore (Control+Shift+Tab still works)

I'm having the same problem as of today, and basically mirrored your findings.  The only thing I can think of that changed in the last 24 hours was the nVidia drivers and Geforce experience..

A:HELP: power option doesn't work - screen saver doesn't start!

This is another case of factory bloatware interfering - in this case a useless factory utility overriding Win7's superior built-in version.

Googling the Quiet Office feature of Asus there are multiple reported problems. Best to default to the Win7 built-in Power Options in Control Panel. Set up a Balanced Plan unless you're a gamer then use High Performance.

I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:

- a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager
- after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later
- my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing
- actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off
- when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either
- and probably other stuff that I haven't took note of yet...

Things i've tried to get rid of these problems:
- Virus scan with avast!, a couple viruses found and fixed, but nothing changed.
- disk clean up, nothing changed
- registry clean, nothing changed
- CURRENTLY defragging my C drive, hope something changes..

Anyone know what the heck's going on!?
Anyone got any suggestions on what to do next?

There are three accounts on the computer, the casing has been half removed for the last 3 months, a DVD burner and driver recently installed 3 months ago and I am using a wireless off brand USB keyboard and mouse.
OS: Windows Xp Home Edition 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
As for the second part, the computer requires several restarts to boot up, sometimes up to twenty minutes of turning on and off to boot up. Only started doing this a week ago.

A:My Keyboard doesn't work, and the computer turns on but doesn't start.

It sounds like something is wrong with your Windows XP drivers. Something like that happened to me while building my computer, and when I boot up the keyboard did not work because my copy of windows XP was bad. You could try reinstalling windows XP, and It might work better, but I dont have a definite answer to your problem.

Have a friend with a relatively new Lenovo laptop using Windows XP SP3. Overnight he can't access the Internet via browsers, email or AIM. His desktop connected to the same router is working fine.

He can access the router by IP address using either IE7 or FireFox 3.5. Anything that needs a DNS server doesn't work. This does say though that he has a working connection to the router.

He's run MalWareBytes and his own McAffee software looking for bad stuff but has found nothing.

Running "ipconfig /all" from the command prompt gives exactly the same results for the laptop as his working desktop. The DNS servers are there. He can ping the DNS servers using their IP addresses. He is being assigned a proper local network address so DHCP is working on the router.

Any thoughts on where to look next to discover why the Internet applications don't seem to be able to find the DNS servers?

A:Can't Access Websites, Email doesn't work and no AIM doesn

FWIW, my friend took his laptop to a PC shop. Their diagnosis was malware. I don't know the identity of the malware. Anyway, the shop saved his data then formatted and reloaded XP SP3.

Hello.
I am quite new here, but I've been wanting to get this problem solved for a long time, and I haven't seemed to get any answer.

So here's my problem:

I bought my Asus N53SV for around a year ago, and it worked great. But for some reason something changed.
When I try to open bluetooth, nothing happens. And when I want to connect anything using bluetooth, it doesn't work.

I tried to do this:
[windows] + r >bttray
But nothing opens up.

Please help!

Thank you,
Karstin

A:My bluetooth doesn't work. bttray doesn't open.
