Presario 2200 Compaq - CMOS/BIOS battery?

Q: Presario 2200 Compaq - CMOS/BIOS battery?

I have a Compaq Presario 2200 model laptop.

I have an issue where every time by laptop batter discharges the time clock resets. I believe that this is realated to the bios battery. I have taken the laptop appart properly via guide provided on compaq website. This is the maintenance guide with all the spare part numbers listed. However, this laptop is out of warranty.

My problem is that I cannot locate the bios battery anywhere on the board. Could someone with some experience pleae review the diagram for this model and tell me where the battery is?

Thanks,
Darmin

First of all.

Have you tried to calibrate the battery by BIOS? < This might help a lot of problems.

Second

Have you updated your BIOS ?

I am trying to confirm the appearance of the cmos battery in a compaq presarion 1200xl-111 notebook. At the location shown in the manual is a socketed item that looks like an old single transistor. Approx 3/8" (10mm) . It has no markings for voltage, and despite the fact that compaq support says to remove the battery to reset the password, it is not in the parts list?

When I look up a replacement, at a battery site which has photo's,it shows a standard 3.3 v watch type battery as the replacement. If it is a replacement it must have prongs on the back to insert. I have tried gently to remove it, but it will require more force to remove than I want to apply without checking to be certain it is the component.

Sorry to be so wordy, but did want to give full history. Familar with desktop units, but new to laptops.

Thanks for any assistance.

WKR

A:cmos battery on compaq presario

I have never heard of a cmos battery in that configuration. I personally doubt that is the battery. I would think it would be one of the standard 3.3v round button cells about the size of a quarter.

I have an old Compaq Presario 1070 laptop, running Windows 98. It hasn't been used for many years, I want to revive it to run piano lessons via its MIDI port. Running on AC, LCD shows AC connection, green power light comes on, but it will not boot. I'm certain the CMOS battery is dead(referenced to be a CR1220, 3v cell). WHERE IS IT? and how do you access the battery. Thankyou.

A:Compaq Presario 1070 CMOS battery

It should still boot and give you an error even with a dead CMOS battery, not always but in most cases.

The battery may be located under a panel on the bottom or in the battery compartment. Actually have you tried booting with the battery removed?

I need to replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard of my Compaq Presario 1200 Laptop. Does anyone have instructions on opening the case to access the battery?
I have been able to get the case open enough to access the Hard Drive but can't figure out how to get all of the way to the battery which, I believe, is very near the back of the unit under the hinges to the screen.
If I were able to remove the screen, I might be able to get that part of the case apart.
Suggestions please,
Thanks,
Pilithigh

A:Power Problem with Compaq Presario 2200

Did you try removing the battery, yet keeping the adapter plugged in and booting? There is no internal battery - but if the laptop won't start with just the cord, then typically it's a larger hardware issue (motherboard, bad component, etc.)

Hi,

I've got a Presario 2200 whose screen flickers black and white horizontal lines at some of the angles its positioned at. Usually if I open it up at a big angle it's fine, but as I go more acute the flickering starts. At some point the screen even goes black.

I tried opening it up to see if I could identify anything wrong with the connection but it seems fine. I even disconnected and reconnected the display cord. Still flickers.

Anyone have an idea of what I could do to fix this flickering?

One more thing, which is more my second priority... the wireless networking in the laptop doesn't work. The blue wireless button won't even turn on. What should I check? The wireless antenna cables in the Mini PCI communications board seem fine..

Here are the laptop's manuals: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=442823&lang=en&

Thanks in advance. =)

Now I've removed the battery and plugged It into the AC Outlet...still no power.. so I'm thinking okay maybe it's the plug...Not!! I place that same hp adapter to another laptop and it works fine. Can anyone provide some instructions on what steps I should take now. I'm thinking it's the board itself or the pin connector on the laptop... thanks in advance here

I have not been able to start up windows xp. All I get is a black screen and a blinking cursor in the upper left hand cornor. I put in my recovery disk it acts like it is going to re-install windows and then nothing. When I open up the bios settings and use a hard drive comprehensive test it says that my hard drive had failed the test. The hard drive is a seagate 40GB AT disc drive. I took it out and put in another laptop hard drive. I did have to take off a converter thing from the seagate and put it on the IBM hard drive. When I turn on the laptop it boots from the CD and I press enter to set up windows xp home edition. The screen says

A:Compaq Presario 2200 laptop hard drive fail

If there is anything on the drive which you need to recover I would recommend doing that first.

Test the hardware using the seagate 'Sea Tools' for dos utility found at the following link;

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

If that shows no errors and assuming you have either backed your data up elsewhere or don't need any of the data on the drive (as this would destroy all data) Try using the windows setup routine to delete all partitions and then re-create/format them.

Compaq Presario 2200 laptop is not booting to Windows XP.

I get an error message right after the Windows XP loading screen (the screen with the loading bar). After the loading screen it goes blank for a few seconds, and finally to a BSOD that says "The Video Driver Failed to Initialize". After that appears, it starts the whole process again.

I tried Windows Recovery. I can't safe mode it, and choosing previous working settings doesn't work either.

Help, please?

A:Video Card Failed to Initialize Compaq Presario 2200 Not Working

Did you try a Windows recovery or was it a System Restore? Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration'?

Upon boot tap the F8 key and when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.

If it works try updating your video driver.

i have a question...a while ago my Presario battery died -- it wouldn't charge or discharge, the laptop could only work on the AC, but the indicator showed the correct % of the charge... I bought a new battery and it worked fine for a week, but I decided to reinstall Windows XP, and from then on, it's been a rollercoaster ride for me (( First, it worked fine, but the laptop started to freeze every 20 minutes. I followed the COmpaq's people advice and updated BIOS for some battery controller thing and updated the video driver. From then on, the problems with my new battery just started to overwhelm me First, the battery wouldn't charge when the laptop was ON. Then somehow it did charge. I decided to calibrate it, and now it doesnt want to charge -- on or off. The red light indicating the battery is flashing -- as it's not charging, and the indicator says "0" % of course.
Does anyone have any ideas?? Please? This only started after I reinstalled the Windows, so I am sure it's not hardware or the battery, everything worked just fine ((
Please help me!!!! Thanks... I'm desperate....

But the replacement battery I found has a bigger capacity ? 6600mah 11.1v. I want to know if its safe for my laptop, because many people from Google search results said its okay if its 11.1v, and some online store sellers also said it's okay to use 11.1v replacement for a 10.8v battery. Please let me hear your opinions.

Upon starting my laptop, I get a message that the system has detected the storage capacity of the primary internal battery is very low and needs to be replaced. No important programs load and the desktop loads normal brightness until I move the cursor and the brightness fades to very low. I have to admit that yesterday, I accidently spilled about 3 tablespoons of lemonade onto the lower right hand side of the keyboard. Everything seemed fine until about an hour later, when the pages of any internet site seemed to scroll down by themselves and I couldn't control with the "page up button"......kept scrolling down. Then when I went to my Vanguard account screen and tried to type in my user name, with the last 3 digits of 627, what kept appearing was 6267. everytime I tried.
Then on an MSNBC site, I was watching a replay of one of their programs and their video program has it's own volume button.
Everytime I tried to raise the volume, it went down on it's own. It wasn't until this morning that when I turned on the lap top, most of the task bar was empty and the screen would fade. I took the back panels off to look for that "internal battery" but couldnt see it.
Research on the internet keeps directing me to the large detachable battery on the back but this battery has proven to be good.
If I take that battery out and just try using only the power cord, I still get the same bad results mentioned above.

Hi!

I own a Compaq Presario 1247 laptop (AMD K6II/400MHz, 2.2V, 160 MB RAM, 30GB HDD, 24x CDROM, model number 1456VQLIN, 3 or 4 years old I think...), and the darn thing won't power on. I gave it to my sis and it came back dead. She had taken it to compusa I believe, where the guy told her to replace the battery. When I plug it into the wall socket, the LED to indicate it's plugged in comes on, but the one that indicates the battery is charging doesn't. The battery has a light indicator to say how much charge is in it, and none of the leds come on (0% I guess). Pressing the power button has no effect, whether or not the battery is inserted into its bay. I'd bring it to compusa here, but they charge $140 just to look at the machine... since a battery costs less, I thought I'd try getting a new one first, but it seems strange to me that the computer won't boot when the battery is out of the bay. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Should I be looking for other causes? (fried motherboard, maybe, I dunno?) Thanks mucho for any help at all (or even sympathy )!

You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.

When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.

There is a pass word to the BIOS and you need to take out the motherboard battery to erase it. Leave it out for 5 secs, unplug the computer and turn it on unpluged to drain all the power out of it. then reinstall the battery and reboot.
You m,ay have to remove some of the perifs CD burner, JS Ect if it dosent work the first time to drain the power out of everything

Yes it sucks.

I found an old PC (Progen) in trash that didn't come with hard drive and CD-Rom, but when first try to startup it can go to BIOS. (it has about 32 MB RAM)
Because BIOS has password protected, I try to reset the password by removing CMOS battery and wait for about 24 hours then install back the battery.
The problem now the PC can't go through BIOS, the fan is spinning and green light is on but no beep sound.
Don't know if the battery problem or the mobo already dead
Thanks for any help

A:PC won't go to BIOS, after removing CMOS battery

CMOS only retains BIOS settings for a few seconds after the battery is removed. 24 hours is just insane overkill.

Also, on most semi-modern machines, the password isn't stored in volatile memory and as such will never be "reset" using that method - There will be a jumper on the motherboard to specifically erase the password. You should search for that motherboard on the internet and fine the manual for it.

As for the machine not POST'ing anymore, I would suggest that you moved a jumper or that something is not seated right. Double-check that the ram, cpu, video card, any other peripherals, cables, and battery are all seated properly. If in doubt, remove them and re-seat them. Find the manual for that motherboard online and go through it, checking all the jumpers on the motherboard to make sure they are in the correct positions.

I've seen a few problems like mine on the boards but never a satisfactory resolution. My problem started with a frozen screen. I did have a few windows open and i was listening to music and surfing at the time. Upon restart case light came on, M/B power light came on, fans on psu, cpu and graphics card all spun up as well as hard drive, but no post beep. Long story short is that I have done everything recommended on various forums, like resetting the Cmos via the jumpers, taking out the CMOS battery, leaving the CMOS battery out overnight, new CMOS battery, changing the PSU etc. and am now at the stage where I have the M/B stripped out of the case on the workbench with just the psu, one stick of memory, Graphics card, Hard drive, mouse and keyboard. Strange thing is computer WILL post with default Bios settings when CMOS battery removed, go through bios setup routine, launch Windows and run perfectly normally. But as soon as I put the battery back, nothing, no post beep, nothing, just spinning fans and no display. Has the Bios Chip got corrupted? The battery clip does look firmly soldered to the M/B and is not bent. I am at a loss. Can't RMA the M/B as its an Ebay job. All the Caps look sound. Is it worth replacing the BIOS chip as they're fairly cheap or is the M/B toast?? Does anyone know anything elseI can try??

Hello! I'm new here to these forums hoping to find a solution to this problem that has been bugging me for days and keeping me from setting up my computer.

Basically after several years, I am finally dealing with the loss of my Hard-Disk drive that came with my computer. I have bought a new Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ as a replacement, and I am having trouble setting it up. Here are a few Specs for my computer:

Compaq Presario SR1303WM
AMD Sempron 3000+
BIOS Revision 3.11
Mother Board: ASUS A7V8X-LA

It's a bit of an older computer. The HDD that failed me used the old ATA standard, and I am going from that to SATA II (3 Gb/s). My motherboard does have two SATA ports on it, but I don't think the motherboard supports 3 Gb/s transfer rate. Only 1.5 Gb/s. I have an SATA cable that connects directly from the HDD to the MoBo as well as a power converter that I use to connect power to the new HDD. I am using a jumper on the fifth and sixth pins ::[:]: <--- looks like that. The reason I am using a jumper is because I have read by other people that this puts the device into the 1.5 Gb/s mode, although I'm not entirely sure. The Samsung manual my HDD came with says that in order to put the drive into this mode, you must download and use their software from their site, www.samsung.com/hdd which I have tried and failed. When I run Samsung's software, I get the error: "Error reading from drive L: data area: drive not ready (A)bort, (R)etry, (F)ail?"... Read more

Hey everyone...it appears I'm having some issues with a slow clock.  I have an XPS M1330.  Initially, it would fall behind a few hours each day, INCLUDING the BIOS time.  Also I noticed frequent Wi-Fi disconnections, as well as when I would shut down the laptop, it would not completely shut down.  It would go into what I believe would be an "idle" state, showing the blue power LED still being lit.  I would have to then manually shut down the laptop by holding the power button.  That was the only way of getting it out of the so-called "idle" state.  So first thing I decided to try was to replace the CMOS battery which was the first suggestion.  After replacing the CMOS battery, I got about 2 weeks of flawless performance; no slow clock, and no powering off issues.  Now, the clock is running slow again and I can't seem to figure out why.  I updated to the latest BIOS (A14 I believe), which seemed to work for about a day, now it's back to being slow again.  It is not shutting down properly either.  When I check the BIOS time, it is also incorrect.  I'm not sure if this a motherboard issue or what but any suggestions or ideas would be great.

I wanted to bump this because I really want to see if anyone has any idea or answers as to what this could be or how to fix it so I can save myself some money and not buy a new motherboard.

Hi folks!

I have a question. Will BIOS gets corrupted if CMOS battery is left dead for a while? The reason I ask is because I bought a P4 mobo from vendor and it is an non-retailer box. Apparently when I receive the mobo, I tested the CMOS battery is dead and when I put everything together, there is no POST or beep at all coming from the mobo but power light and fan are on. Any idea?

I suspect the BIOS is corrupted because the baterry is left dead for too long. Is my theory correct? Please advice. Thanks.

A:Will BIOS gone if CMOS battery is left till it's dead

"I suspect the BIOS is corrupted because the baterry is left dead for too long. Is my theory correct?"...

I would say yes. This doesn't happen all the time, but in your case, after a new battery was installed, no POST is a bad sign... Did you try resetting the CMOS by moving a motherboard jumper? Is the CPU and memory supported by the motherboards model? Was the CMOS battery totally dead or did it show some DC voltage?

I just repaired a Compaq desktop computer that was built in September 1999. It had an AMD K6 550MHz CPU. The CMOS battery was bad, but it still showed 1.3 volts DC. It should have been 3.0 volts. A new battery brought this old baby back to life

If the CMOS battery for the BIOS becomes dead, and it is not replaced with a new battery, what are the not so good effects beyond the day and date system clock ? Will it keep the default BIOS settings in the CMOS for a long time without a good battery ? I did replace my 2006 Gateway battery mainly for the day/ date and to be able to change boot device order.

A:Solved: the CMOS battery for the BIOS general question

It will revert to the factory CMOS settings which of course include date and time. You would have to reset all of your BIOS Settings such as boot order, Drive recognition and such each time you booted up. But as far as permanent damage you won't have any just because the Battery was dead, unless the battery also started leaking, not likely with the coin cell batteries.

Ok. Trying to fix a friend's computer, and seem to have run into a rather strange snag.  Problem:  The computer will not boot past the bios screen. Details:  When you power on the computer, the compaq logo with intel inside shows up and has the <F1 Setup> and <F10 System Recovery> options listed as well.  And this is about as far as the computer gets.  After this the whole computer is just locked up, no buttons work on the keyboard no lights come on the keyboard ect ect.  I've tried mashing on the F1 key as soon as I power on the computer and I can manage to get it to say *entering setup* but it still freezes after this point.  I've already tried eliminating possible sources of problem, all expansion cards removed, HDD and Dvd Rom disconnected, single memory module (256mb ddr 2700), only power, vga, and keyboard connected.  Ive also used the jumper on the motherboard to clear the cmos hoping that would solve the problem, to no avail.  I've tried using a different stick of memory and different memory slot as well...  Tried using both a ps2 and a usb keyboard... Ive even tried pulling out the jumper for the bios password protection (even though it didn't have a password on it, just trying anything I can think of).  The installed bios version is 3.1, and that is about all I know about the computer at this point, other than what the website tells me of it.   http://h10025.www1.hp.com/... Ok, so I bought a HP Mini Notebook for my wife. Model: 1035NR
Everything was working fine. She goes to boot it yesterday and she gets hit with a password right after the AMI bios screen. She asked me if I set the PW, I told her no and she said she didn't either.

No big deal. I take it apart and unplug the CMOS battery for about 20 minutes.
Hold the power button down for a bit to discharge any left over juice. Put it all back together and same thing.

So I tried to leave it out for over 12 hours and the same thing.
I even tried various AMI master passwords (I knew it wouldnt work, but you know how desperate we get). So now I'm stuck.

I googled it today and found various information.
Most leading me to believe I am stuck with a paperweight or will have to send it to HP to have it fixed which will run me almost what I paid for it.

So am I missing something here? Anything else I can do?
Thanks guys!

Well I can tell you that removing the battery will NOT clear a pw on a laptop. This is a security feature. Next we do not assist with pw help. This thread is now closed.

Ok and the problem is:

I installed a ripped off ****ty version of XP. Never really worked splendidly.
I changed somehting in the bios, i had no idea what it was, i'm stupid for doing so i realise. it was something to do with speed, it was at about 100mhz and i changed it to 200mhz. also note, i had the "bios virus alert thing" ON.

it just beeped.
until i moved the jumpers on the 3 pins from the two pins closest to the battery position to the furthest two. and turned the pc on. it didnt beep. the monitor didnt respond and but it seemed to be turned on (the cpu fan was going and a green LED on the mobo was on). i then turned the power off. and stuck the jumper back on the original pins and turned it back on hoping the BIOS would be reset but the beeping sequence continued and nothing seemed to start. The Athlon XP 2600 that runs at 1917MHz runs on an FSB of 166MHz and has a clock multiplier of 11.5 (166 X 11.5 = 1909Mhz).

So if you have a system bus setting of 200MHz and the clock multiplier is set a 11.5, you were running it at 2300MHz, which is seriously overclocking it.

The processor might not have been up to that much overclocking and died.

I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.

On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.

When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.

I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.

I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.

I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.

I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

It looks like you may have Bad Ram: Compaq BIOS Beep Codes - BIOS Central.
Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code Compaq Presario SR5510F Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) Or it could be the Video adapter on the motherboard. Try removing one stick of RAM and get to the Bios. So I have a machine I have just replaced the mobo on for someone but everytime it is unplugged from the wall upon reboot a message appears during post saying default values have been loaded and you have to press F1 to enter setup (bios) or F2 to continue.
I thought this was no big problem and swiftly replaced the CMOS battery but it is exactly the same, resets everytime power is cut
The board is an MSI B75MA-P45 and is brand new
Thankfully the default sata mode is AHCI so the machine still boots after reset but its really annoying me and the clock resetting stops WU from working and also threw a temp activation problem that was easily dealt with.

HWinfo does not show VBatt reading and speedfan does but reports 4.08V which is clearly wrong from a 3V battery

Any thoughts/ideas would be gratefully received as im running out of options other than an RMA which is going to be a major pain as this is her only computer and cant be without it

A:BIOS resets everytime power is unplugged cmos battery replaced

Just some thoughts.

***Why was the motherboard replaced??***

1. Is their a default jumper pin on the motherboard that is in the wrong position.
2. I have seen a power supply cause this problem.
3. Lately HWmonitor for other members has been giving wrong readings.
4. It has been know that a infection will monkey with the time so one can't get help on line.

Hello all great website!

Compaq Presario 7000 series (model #7QSM11) using Windows ME, AMD 1332 mhz processor. My sister's computer. Hard drive was a 60GB, but it died. So I bought a new hard drive actually tried a 160GB first but thought the 137GB issue was the problem so now I am trying a 120GB western digital Caviar.

I found and successfully flashed the latest bios. (ROM date 3/28/02-786K2 Family). I checked the bios and it does see all 120GB. But when I goto partition it, I run into problems. Three methods tried: I tried to use Western Digitals included CD-ROM, even created the DOS boot floppy that they recommended on another system. Doesn't work keeps coming up with an error that something like A:\Auto???.exe not found. I checked the floppy that file is there?? Comes up whether I am booting from the floppy or from the CD-ROM.

So I tried fdisk from a Windows ME boot disk. Fdisk will only find/or report 24GB. I cleared the partition and tried using the Compaq restore disks but they came up with the same problem.
Am I right in thinking that this is a Windows ME issue?
Can you tell me how to fix this problem?

My computer is a Dell 8100, also running Windows ME but with a Intel P4, I installed a 200GB hard drive and had to flash the bios, and then I am not sure if it was Maxtor's DDO dynamic disk overlay or Intel's application accelerator, or the Flashed Bios, but Windows ME sees the whole hard drive.

NOTE: THIS IS A COPY OF MY POST ON THE COMPAQ FORUM...getting desperate.

Hi, i bought a 6150b from a company auction. Everything worked perfect for the longest time. Then last week i went to go turn it on, and all it does is run the CPU fan for a couple seconds, flash the AC LED about 7 - 8 times, and while thats flashing the power and hard drive LEDs stay solidly lit. Then it completely turns off. This all lasts about 3 seconds at the most. Thats what happens when on battery power.

When on AC power, the same thing happens, except it continues doing the cycle over and over again until I unplug it.

I think it might have something to do with the LCD monitor, since it does not even show a slight flicker at all. No color change like it would from when turned off to a black back lit screen when turning on.simply nothing.

I opened her up (no warranty anyways) and checked all the connections for the keyboard, monitor, DVD drive etc....also reseated them as well, with no luck.

Pulled the both RAM modules and reseated them as well, nothing.

Pulled the battery as well, no change. Still cycles the same over and over again while on AC

There are no audible errors codes (real nice HP...), and im lost at this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario 6150b wont boot - no BIOS screen - powers on and off repeatedly

I think instead of just pulling and replacing the CMOS battery you might purchase a new one and install it. Proceed from there. If you get a screen and it's still has a problem try a new PSU. Jazz

Its a packard bell laptop, and the system started to freeze for no reason. No viruses. Now, I can usually only move the mouse pointer-if it lets me start windows at all (xp). As of tonight, the system wouldnt let me even pass the startup screen, it kept asking for a non existent system password to continue! The system bios clock seems to reset itself too, so I believe the whole problem to be related to the cmos battery.

My main question is, how much should I roughly be expected to pay for a cmos battery and installation from a general pc repair store? The laptop is out of warranty, so I dont really want to be spending 30+ just for Packard to find and install one either. The reason I need someone else to do it is because this particular packard system has the most awkward setup, and therefore access to the battery is next to impossible..

as you can see from my (slightly blurry) photo-
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/2219/cmoslocation.png

there are only 3 panels on the back of the machine that you can remove- 1 hard drive, 2 ram, and 3 wifi card (I think!).. the cmos battery (the circle!) is to the right of one of the panels, under the casing. I have tried removing the entire casing, all screws and connections, and even from the front, trying to get to it by removing the keyboard, but it proved impossible to me, so Id rather get someone else to do it. No doubt the difficulty is on purpose so that you would always send it to packard for repair, and for a high price, bu... Read more

You can purchase a recovery disc kit for it from here for $27.00 plus shipping. Unless you already have the recovery disc kit, you'll need it to revert that laptop back to its original factory condition and get a fresh start.

My Compaq Presario 2200 laptop has issues with the screen going dark. The information can still be seen if you really strain your eyes, but you can not work on the computer. It seems very random because it happens only sometimes and there is nothing that I know of that is causing it. Took it to a computer repair shop and they were looking at about $800 to fix the backlight. This seems odd, either the backlight is gone or it isn't.
Anybody have any fixes for this or common sense suggestions?

After my friend's laptop wouldn't run on battery power OR charge the battery I tried many "fixes."

Shockingly none worked that I found.

Only one thing worked for me to my surprise.

A last ditch effort was to open up the laptop (sony pcg-81114L) and disconnect the cmos battery for a few minutes to reset the CMOS.

To my surprise, when powered on, the battery instantly showed it was charging AND when removing the power plug the battery POWERS the laptop now! (and I'd thought I was wasting my time.)

Worked with an off brand battery also.

Many times this has saved many computers that have odd "unsolvable" things wrong with them.

Surely someone else has done this also but I haven't seen it posted anywhere to my knowledge.

Thank GOD for bringing the idea to remembrance!

A:Compaq Presario SR1810NX Not Getting Past Compaq Logo Screen

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)

If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.

However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.

i dont know anything about computers so i will need a detailed explanation and i need to know how to fix it!! it just stays on the compaq screen

A:My Compaq Presario 2500 wont go pass the compaq screen

Hello lilevee22,

Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.

Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get

the Advanced Options.

Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

Hi guys,

I wanted to find out what options, if any, I had to recover files from a notebook that wont initialize explorer.exe (0xc0000006). I can get to the log in screen and select user but after it tries to load settings, all I can access is cmd and task manager. Im able to locate the files I want to copy through DOS but theres no 3.5 drive and the cd says not ready (im assuming due to lack of drivers loaded). Is there a way I can manually load the drivers needed for the cd drive to work? If not, is it possible to connect the laptop to my pc and access the hard drive from there? Please any help getting these files out would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks again everyone!

A:File recovery via c:\ Compaq 2200 notebook

Update: Tried connecting via router... Router identifies notebook as connected but when I open my network connections on the PC its not listed. I tried mapping the drive but just get a 'path not found' error, at the same time the 0xc0000006 error pops up on the notebook.

I'm receiving an error code upon boot-up on my laptop. The error code is (PXE-E61) Media Test Failure Check Cable. I have disassembled the laptop and checked for any cables disconnected and found none disconnected. I re-inserted the small cable to the mobo which is related to the IDE header connector on the mobo just to make sure, still the error code. Could it be the removable header connector that is placed on the pins oh the IDE drive that is causing this error code?

A:PXE ERROR CODES for Compaq 2200 Laptop

Did you just replace the hard drive with one that was already installed in another laptop? If so, you'll have to format and re-install the OS. If not, your hard drive may be bad.

This code can also mean there is a incorrect setting in your BIOS, likely the boot order.

Been working fine until a few days ago. When I turn it on it says 163 - Time and Date not set - There is no option in bios to set date Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready - Bios cannot detect hard drive So the question is if the RTC Battery is weak or dead can it cause above issues Thanks Chris

A:Question about RTC Battery (CMOS Battery) and System Errors

CWILLIAM83 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! The answer is actually -- yes and no. A weak or dead CMOS battery will prevent the BIOS settings from being saved when you power off the PC. If the default settings work OK with your hardware, then the only thing you would notice is that the clock resets. But, if you customized your settings to see the hard drive, then the default settings might not see it. After you replace the battery, you would have to go through configuring the settings-- again.Good Luck

I have just replaced my CMOS/BIOS battery today, as , I have faced some critical problem regarding regular BIOS date/time reset after system shutdown. But I want to know how do i recognize, that my new batter is totally ok or functional.

Battery Meter gadget shows that "battery Not charging"
Is it a gadget problem?

Is there any method available so that I can track that my new installed CMOS battery in PC is working fine?

Please help me.

A:Battery Meter shows CMOS battery not charging

The battery you have replaced is solely there to maintain the clock and other BIOS settings (if you have changed them from their defaults). It will not prevent you from booting your system if it is dead/missing; all it means is that you will have to enter the BIOS each time and make the correct settings and time. This battery is not rechargeable.

Do you still have to enter the correct time, or is the BIOS maintaining this now you've changed the battery?

Hi all, can anyone tell how to reset my CMOS to factory defaults? My laptop (Compaq Presario V4000) is dead, power led lights come on but no POST, I am getting the BSOD (black screen of death). I verified for a faulty RAM but they ok, in fact if I try to power without them gives me the beeps of not having RAM. Now i need to reset the CMOS but do not know how, found the RTC Battery and removed it for a while, but that did not work. Looking to see if there are any jumper to short out to reset the bios like on regular motherboards but do not see anything. Thank in advance.

I don't know much about this computer. It has a Celleron M and 504 memory. It has an intergrated GPU from Intel I think it is the 900 or the 915 not sure. I wanted to know if there is any way at all to get into the BIOS and change the Video Memory. I just would like any feedback from anyone who knows anything about this computer and its BIOS. I just want to know if i am trying to do something that is impossible or if there is something that can be done.

Hello all & RUSTAM,

My name is Jordan, an Account Manager in Toronto.

A year ago I set a password on my Inspiron 2200 and forgot it. Judging by the forums, you might get these requests frequently so I'm sorry if I'm just another person asking for help.

My SERVICE TAG is 7YGPW81-595B, I was wondering you would be able to email me my code or old pass. What bugs me is that I remember setting it to something simple like 1234 or 12345 or asdf. You might see that if its in the service tag. I tried for hours already.

My email is [email protected], or I'll be happy to give you my phone number via email.

Anyways, IF YOU ARE EVER IN TORONTO, I would like to buy you a drink or show you the town. Let me know. I hope you get this soon!

Thanks.

Ok this might be easy..it might not (COMPAQ M2105)

I ended up replacing my motherboard for a model with more features (SD readers blah blah).

I took it all apart and put it all back with the new board in...now when i go into windows (and even before while booting)...the orange lights would come on for a second...then beging to flicker

while in windows...it just will either not charge the battery..or flicker from AC to battery

i CAN power the unit on with the battery alone, and i CAN power the unit with the cord alone...

lastly, my old motherboard (which had a HD connector problem)...still WILL charge the battery...so i'm sure its not the battery...i don't think...

i also dont' think its the AC adapter since it is the same piece I used on both motherboards.....

what to do................

A:compaq M2105 laptop - battery will not charge, flickers from AC/battery

Hopefully you are experienced in working on and repairing laptops/notebooks... and you carefully handeled the replacement motherboard and didn't damage it. Repairing laptops takes considerable skill and caution.

It does sound like the "new" motherboard is bad unfortunately. How did you handle the "old" operating system restore to the "new" motherboard?

How do you access the Bios on a Compac Presario 4110. I keep getting the message 162 Sytems Options not set. 163 Time and Date not set. Having visited Compac they were not a lot of help. Downloading the software recommeded by them was a waste of time, still got the above message. Tried all the usual keystrokes etc no good. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
