Certain paths and folders inaccessable across network.

Q: Certain paths and folders inaccessable across network.

Hey Techspot,
The other computers in my network have trouble accessing certain shared folders on my main computer. I have three drives installed, C: my OS drive, and D: and B: file drives. My C: Public folder, another folder on C: and my entire D: drive have been shared for a long time, and are the only paths the other computers can access. Anything I try to share now (except stuff on the D: drive, since the entire thing is share-enabled) will return the "is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." error.
I can understand why a computer in it's entirity wouldn't be accessible across a network, but as to why certain locations wouldn't work - some on the same drive as locations that do work - I'm at a loss.
Thanks in advance!

A: Certain paths and folders inaccessable across network.

The edit button isn't working so:
I forgot to mention, all the computers are running Vista Home Premium or Ultimate, all on an ethernet lan with a Belkin router.

Hi
Whut th heck is going on?
Since xp the same ol' same ol'. Why after trouble shooting and getting access to my network folders does windows ALWAYS revert back to inaccessibility? You get it working for a short time and then it goes back to not being able to transfer simple files. This has been driving me nuts for years.

Two os's win7 64 to and from 32bit could transfer files for about a week.

I burned 2 data folders and 2 avi videos to cd on my desktop with older

nero burner and then burned 2 data folders to the same cd on my laptop with

newer nero software-at this point everything is fine , then I go back to my

desktop and burn another data folder after I clicked ok to a box that said;

"unexpected format" or something like that and then I couldn't bring up any

of the previously burned folders or avi files. So then I read something in a thread

here about finalising the cd so other pc's could read it , so I finalised a small

data file on the laptop and I still can't see the previous folders or avi's , only

the last 2 data folders. When I put the cd back in the laptop and start up

the nero software and click on "disk info" it shows all of the multisession

tracks as being on the cd , but only the last 2 are accessable. How can I

recover the previous folders and avi's? Any help would be appreciated as

one of the original folders has data that can't be recovered any other way.

Please and thanks much........osha

A:folders on cd inaccessable

Unfortunately problems can occur if CDs are burned using different versions of software, different CD burners and on different PCs. It also depends on the settings you choose for each burn.

However, to start off...if you want to add files to a CD after the first burn then you should choose the 'multi-session' option for the first and subsequent burns. Multi-session CDs may not be readable in all PCs/CD drives/CD software packages. That's why, for maximum compatibility, after the final 'burn' on a multi-session CD or for a single session CD, the option 'Finalize CD' should be selected. However, this does write-protect the CD so no further files can be added.

If you did not choose multi-session for the first burn AND you did not select the finalise CD option, then you can add more files later. When you do this, only the last session is visible - so it looks like there's nothing else on the CD, which seems to be your problem. However, you can use the Nero Multi Mounter program to view the contents of the other session(s).

i just bought a new laptop. an HP pavilion if it helps. and having copied over some music from my old desktop to the laptop i tried to move 5gigs of music from one folder on the laptop to another one for ease of sorting. i pressed ctrl x and then ctrl v. it was copied ok as i saw it all in the folder. i closed the folder and opened itunes to add the folder to the library. it seemed to not have any music in it.. so then i tried to reopen the folder i just created with the music that was very definately in it. but it is now empty and i get Access is denied.. the music has dissappeared and doesnt appear on any searches i run. i cant delete/open/move or do anything to the now empty folder.it just coes up with D:\music is not accessable. access is denied.
the odd thing is that i have another 10 folders all empty and undeletable in another bit of my laptop that i want to delete as they are blocking me copying in an addon for WoW.
as you can guess im not exactly a genius at this stuff. and just trying to tidy up my pc has resulted in several hours frustration and lots of swearing.

any help would be greatly appreciated. as i can transfer the music back over but it doesnt fix the problem of it disappearing again :/

many thanks

(and yes i bought all the music its just quicker to usb it across then import all the cds one by one)

I changed the user name from "user001" to "user888". That changed the name on the login/logout screens. But the user folders and paths all stayed with the old name "user001". As a result some things, like the name installed programs will grab and use, are still called "user001".

Is there a way, short of re-installing Windows, to change all the appropriate folders, paths and registry entries to read "user888" and get rid of the old user name completely?

A:Changing the User Folders (and paths)

You may want to create a new account and move the user files over to that new account. Then delete the old account.

I mistakenly deleted the contents of a user's account folder and was unable to replace the sub-folders manually or by pasting empty ones from another account. If I try to use the account to save files, I just get an error message saying that the folder xxx or file path doesn't exist, depending on where I am trying to save them. This is not just a long filename error and I am afraid that I have caused problems for the user that would affect any Windows 8 account he opens in future, because of Microsoft syncing. What do you suggest?

A:How to reset a user's deleted sub-folders/file paths?

Do you mean you've deleted the entire user folder in the root of C:\Users?

If so, just forget about it, unless you need to restore actual data. Simply create a new user after deleting the old one:

Code:
net user /delete DeletedUserNameHere

You can see the list of user names with

Code:
net user

Since I updated to SP1, I've had folders randomly becoming inaccessible. They are normal, physical folders, and the folder itself is viewable in Explorer. Also, the problem only surfaces after using the computer for a few minutes.

For instance, I have my music stored in "e:\music\", where it's split into folders such as "tracked" and "mp3s". I'll be listening to music from the "mp3s" folder when I start my computer. But suddenly, when I double-click on the "mp3s" folder, I get a "Location not available" error. If I open a command prompt any try to access the directory that way, I get the same error. "e:\music\" will still be available, as will some of its subfolders, such as "tracked". Others randomly won't. If I refresh, "mp3s" will still show up in explorer, even though you can't access it.

If I reboot, everything returns to normal. Then, after a couple minutes, it happens again, seemingly at random. If I boot to a command prompt, everything is accessible. I've run all the tests I can think of, and all my drives are in perfect health. The only thing I have to go on is the fact that this only seems to be happening on one hard drive -- though I could be wrong about that -- and it seems to happen to the same folders. For instance, "e:\music\mp3s" (though other subfolders of "\music\" will be available), and "e:\games\unreal tourname... Read more

On my main PC i am running Windows 7 Homepremium 64bit. My Pc is connected via ethernet cable to BT Homehub3.

I have another PC running Windows XP SP3 connected via WiFi and a laptop also Wndows XP and connected vis WiFi.

I have a Kodak C110 AiO printer connected to the home pc via USB cable.

I have tried to set up printing on the other PC and laptop and the Printer is shown in the network map, but cannot and all my efforts have now disrupted the network; viz I cannot access shared files on the Network.

On the Home PC the network is called Network 2.

I want it to be the Homegroup or Work Group but cannot seem to make this happen.

Any suggestions please?

A:How do I reset my network paths

If I take it you want to print on the main PC from the other two ? I have a similar situation and set it up giving the main PC a fixed IP and then when adding the printer to the other two I used the local port method i.e \\fixed IP address\printer share name, having initially shared the main printer - you will need to install the printer driver on the remote systems. My main PC is ethernet and all the others are wireless.

Hope this is of help.

Love 7 so far! But today I needed to access a share (\\servername\share) but when I went to type it, it came up cannot connect. We're on a domain with AD, and noticed in eventvwr that GP not processing:

The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\internal.domain\SysVol\internal.domain\Policies\{5682A7A2-6BAE-4655-8DB6-7CAF8ECC6042}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.

Also would not map network drives. Anyways, ended up doing a system restore to a known working point in time, and that seemed to work, until I rejoined the computer to domain (since it had lost the trust relationship because of the system restore), but after a few group policies processed, and a couple critical updates were installed, it broke again. So now I unplug from the network at bootup, login, then plug network back in, and it seems to be a workaround for now, but hopefully it's only a temporary one. Anyone have any ideas?

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

Hi,

Newbe with a question.

I am assuming it is possible to enable offline files of multiple network folders but I can't get it to work.

Situation:
Running Win7 ultimate 32bit on a domain.
Server with 2 folder shares:
Share1: test1
Share1: test2

Mapped to a network drive (Share1) and was able to enable offline files.
I then mapped to (Share2) on the same server and the option Always available offline is clickable. Unfortuntely it does not do anything.

Is it just not possible to create multiple offline available folders using different mapped network drive folders from one server?

Cheers

A:2nd HD inaccessable

Reload the data from the backup you did before the partition (after formatting the drive).

One assumes that you would have backed up the data, as merging partitions with live data would be about the riskiest thing you could do, if the data was important.

Hi, yesterday I decided to switch antivirus and firewall programs from pccillin+Avast to bitdefender(free)+zonealarm. However, in the process my pc stopped working normally. I attempted to revert to an earlier system restore point but upon restart an error message appeared saying that Tm Proxy Module could not be initialized and ever since then, avast (the only antivirus I have left) is neither working or accessable.
Now, I followed the instructions in the sticky thread 'read this before posting HijackThis log' and some problems were found:

Neither Spybot, Adaware nor CWShredder found anything

eTrust antivirus program found the following...Win32/Oneraw!generic. Having read the relevant page, I recognised the symptoms ie random security balloon and reconfigured settings. I followed instructions to remove the root cause (delete because it wouldn't clean) but the symptoms persist.

McAfee found...Downloader-AFH which seemed to require me to alter the registry files. I didn't do it because I don't trust myself to get it right.

I checked my Add/remove programs for everything on all suggested lists and found nothing.

I also checked for microsoft updates and installed 3 non-crirical updates.

I hope I have done everything correctly and thoroughly. I would be very grateful if you could help me clear up the rest of this mess. I enclose a HijackThis log.

MY OS is Win 98.
I recently installed Adobe photo bus edition from an old CD. I already had Adobe photo deluxe on my computer, but I wanted to see if the business edi. was any good.
WELL. It changed all my picture files to the same icon.
My JPGs would only open in the business ed.
So I uninstalled the program (choosing not to uninstall the shared files) and it changed all my picture icons to normal, except the photo deluxe and the jpg. The photo deluxe (pdd) still works, but the jpgs won't open or give the option to open.
Both types of files have the windows logo icon.

I know there must be a simple solution to all of this.
Please help. I don't want to loose all my pics.

I tried running chkdsk, it took hours and hours to run and just said "File record segment XXXX is unreadable" from 4 up to 7000-something. I also tried the free version of HDD Regenerator. It listed all the sectors as bad and didn't seem to indicate if anything could be done. Anyone have any ideas here, or am I in trouble? Thanks!

I have a boot issue, I've looked online and found some people have had similar problems but I have been unable to find a resolution.

Intel i7-2600K
NVIDIA 570GTX (currently underclocked by 100mhz)
8GB RAM GSkill DDR3 @ 1600mhz
Antec TruePower 750W
*GSkill 120GB Phoenix Pro SSD
*Samsung 1.5TB SATA
*Seagate 3TB SATA
Windows 7 Pro - 64 bit

About 2 months ago, my GSkill SSD failed (or I thought it did), it went through phases of locking up and BSOD followed by "unable to boot as drive is inaccessable. Error 0xc000000e."

I sent the drive away, and got a new one last week and have since reinstalled all my old programs, etc. In the interim I bought a 3TB hard drive to use as a replacement (my 1.5TB is used for media/storage/etc).

I have been using my SSD problem free for the last week, so I thought I would format my 3TB to get some more storage space so I initially deleted it from the boot records then attempted to format it while windows is booted from my SSD, but it was unable to format.

I disconnected my 3TB to put into another machine to format, and upon reboot of my computer, the "unable to boot as drive is inaccessable" error appeared again, i disconnected my 1.5TB as well, and tried to boot again, same error. I reconnected my 3TB, and my computer booted no dramas.

Any ideas??

Welcome to sevenforums.

Can you post a screenshot of your Disk Manager? I have a sneaking suspicion that the system reserved partition is still on the 3TB drive. That small hidden partition is necessary to boot windows 7. It's easy to fix, but I want some proofs before I send you doing stuff.

Write "disk manager" in the Start searchbox to find it quickly. Here tells how to post a screenshot.

I'm trying to help out a friend with this issue; the computer in question is not very old; it was new in November 2014.

The issue seems to be that some websites become inaccessible in both Internet Explorer and FireFox; what happens is either the page tries to load and simply never does without displaying an error or sometimes you get "this page cannot be displayed".

I set this computer up for them and it has Eset Endpoint 5.0.2237.0, Malwarebytes and Spybot 2.4 installed. Despite the problem with web pages, the anti-virus is receiving regular updates and you see the notification balloon at least a couple times a day that the definition database was updated.

Initially when I started looking into this, I did a full system in-depth scan with Eset and it turned up a few minor things but nothing serious; I tried to update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot and Spybot encountered errors during the update but by clicking update several times it was finally able to complete all updates. I have a problem on my Windows 7 machine that I can't figure out. The system has 5 hard drives (2 1TB and 3 500GB), a quad core AMD Phenom, 4GB of RAM, an Asus Mobo, and a Thermaltake 500W PSU.

I had everything up and running for a few weeks and now my two 1TB drives don't show up in explorer. The other 3 drives are working well. The only thing I did was move the PC into another room. I shut down, switched off the PSU and then unplugged it.

All HDDs show in the BIOS and in Disk Management. In DM the two problem drives do not have drive letters and the option to assign is grayed our. In fact all options except delete and help are inop.

I have run the WD disk tool and Spinrite and neither has found any problems with the drives. I have also disconnected and shuffled the power and SATA cables, disconnecting the good 500s to see if it was a power problem - no help.

As a near last resort, I slicked my system drive and installed a fresh W7. Same problem.

I'm hoping that there is some alternative to formatting them and loosing 1.5TB of data.

Any ideas?

All you need to do is to use a third party app like paragon disk suite to assign a drive letter.

It would be really helpful if you told us something about the environment. Who is the service provider for that 3G card? What does their tech support say?

You do realize that not all locations provide data support within a provider's network, right?

smitfraud.c virus has clobbered this dll (maybe others as well) and I cannot start explorer, thus, I cannot get a connection to the internet; I have read many threads that could in fact solve my problem, specifically "hijack this script", but unless I get a browser up I cannot get it; I've booted into safe mode and looked in the system32 directory for "wininet.dll" and it is missing;

I'm currently working on my backup machine and have located this dll in two locations; should I simply "ftp" a copy from this box to my main server? I'm trying to avoid reloading the OS.

Any thoughts?

Sioncerely,

I can't tell how serious the corruption is but yes you can copy the dll from another source and place it under system32. Can't you get hjt from somewhere and copy it on a floppy or usb flash driver ?

Okay; I bought a new SATA (2?) Internal Hard Drive (Maxtor STM3250820AS, to be precise) from a swap meet at a local market (real smart) recently, and when I got it up and running from the BIOS, I got to Windows and in My Computer discovered that my new hard drive was a RAW file system with 0 bytes. Format to NTFS, easy, right? Wrong. Tried it first in Computer Management; delete partition, Create another and format. It gets to 91%, hangs there for a couple of hours, and tells me it couldn't complete it. Tried it in the little format .exe you can open when right clicking and my Dad tried to format it in Cmd to no avail. I've looked around on the internet for similar problems, but all I could find is data recovery and such, which doesn't help for a brand new hard drive.

For a little background, I already have two IDE HDDs (master and slave), and this is my only SATA HDD.

I'm running on:
Windows XP Professional SP2
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.31Ghz
ASUS M2N-MX SE motherboard
and 1 gig of DDR2 ram.

Broken? Solutions? Anyone?

The IP could be changing Via the Router. If this Does happen any connections get lost as its not pointing to the Correct IP.

Idea, Goto the router and add the IP for that PC (DHCP Reservation Lease Info) and or extend the lease to the IP's.

Hi there! I'm hoping someone here can help me. I've noticed that my laptop, a HP Pavilion dv2000 with Windows XP, is running awfully slowly. On top of that, the following websites only load about 25% of the time: Google.com, Comcast.net, Mail.com, AIM Mail, and Hotmail.com. I'm thinking it has something to do with them being e-mail-based websites, though that doesn't explain Google. However, I've also noticed that when Google does load, any results I click on take me to a different website. I've seen the word "overclick" in the address bar, if that helps at all. On top of everything else, AIM the program won't connect to the server, and though I can receive messages through AIM Mail, I am prevented from sending them. This has all been going on for several days now. I've run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program twice. The first time it removed five problems, but the second time it found nothing. anyway i can vaguely remember certain windows files/folders on the storage drive (400gb sata) like start menu, my documents and so on

i chose to delete partition and installation continued, till im on windows all good but the sotorage drive wasnt accessable and when i click says the drive isnt formatted would you like to format now (**** no!)

I have a really goofy one here.

Windows XP Pro Desktop
Windows 2003 Server R2 AD Network

I have one user that cannot see any folders that start with a tilde mark.
For Example he cannot see folders named anything like ~foldername

If I create a folder on our Public Drive, the folder just does not show up in his Explorer window.
If I go to the address bar I can type in the folder name ( P:\~foldername ) and all is good, he is the only one on the network with this problem.
Go to the command prompt, type in P:\~foldername, all is good and it opens up.

I've checked permissions and it doesn't seem to be there, I can't figure out why this might happen, any ideas??

I have a problem that makes absolutely no sense and I wondered if someone can help me make sense of it. First off the operating system is XP PRO. I have a folder on my network (server) all computers on the network can open/ view/ edit the files in said folder. There is roughly 75 subfolders in the folder. Each of these is being updated by adding a new file when a new file is presented for that particular folder. Once this is accomplished the folder is customized with a jpeg pic that is viewable in thumbnail view so that everyone on the network knows that that particular folder has been updated. Now the problem begins. The network drive is labeled files on fs (file server) this is one of the options that comes up in My Network Places. If you go to this drive through my network places all changes are shown to the thumbnail view of folders. But if you go through my computer there is a mapped dirve shortcut that is labeled H: files on fs. It is the same location but if you go through my computer/H:/files on fs some of the thumbnails do not appear. It makes absolutely no sense beacuse they are in the exact same place. If you go through My Network Places all updated folders with thumbnail pics are viewable. If you go through My Computer and access through the mapped drive some may be there but not all. How is this possible? I am looking at the same root folder in two views and one view has all thumbnails updated and the other doesn't! IT'S THE SAME FOLDER! I can't se... Read more

Target drive is "shared" as is target folder. I have Simple File Sharing enabled. Windows firewall is off and both machine's anti virus s/w is disabled. Target folder has write only disabled (should be writable). When I try to paste a file to target folder, I get error that says : "Cannot create or replace <filename>: Access is denied. The drive is not full nor write protected. Is it possible security in my Linksys router is causing this?

Any suggestions?

We have a small business network setup running Windows XP. We have 4 computers that are all networked. I am the administrator. Connected to my desktop is a Seagate 160 gb hard drive (F) we use for backups. We also have another unoccupied computer which we have another 180 gb Seagate hooked up to. Each month I swap the F drives.
I have created shared folders with subfolders under them on each Seagate drive for the users to back up to. When I open up Network Places there are so many folders listed, it looks as if some are duplicated. My question is when you create a folder with subfolders and share them on the network do they automatically show up under Network Places? For example, if I create a Folder Called "Marty's Documents" and then create 2 sub folders "Marty's Docs" and Marty's Drawings" they all show up under Network Places and it gets confusing for all users to choose which folder to pick. Anyway to streamline what shows up under Network Places?

I have vista32 HP and have a few home notepads and PC's mainly running W7. I have the main pc on cable to a router BT Homehub bringing the internet in. All remote stations work wireless through the 'setup a wireless network' using the usb
I added folders from the Main pc using 'MUSIC' for example and set up sharing properties and unlocked all permissions. Done this a few weeks back and all works.
However any new files added to these folders cannot be seen in the network?
I deleted network and sharing and rerun the process using usb...but still could only see the odler files
I manually added a sub folder and sharing permissions which then showed as a seperate network folder but when clicked it said you do not have the rights....even though all permissions were unlocked

Thus I am stumped....how can I get folders to auto refresh so new files are instantly available and why canot view some folders when all permissions are unlocked?

many thanks in advance

A:Network Sharing Folders

Hi neil2jo,

When setting sharing for the new folders, I'd wager you get access denied when trying to set Advanced Sharing as well. I discovered the same problem on my system. Right click on the folder being shared (with access denied) and click on properties and then click on Security. Then click on advanced and check the special permissions to see if Everyone has Deny access set (I'll bet it does) - there's probably one that says Deny and one that says Allow. If so, that Deny is overriding everything else. Select that entry and delete it. You should now have access to the folders and should also be able to set advanced sharing for everyone and that should take care of that problem.

If you fix that sharing problem for all the other shared folders (and set advanced sharing), I suspect the new files will show up just fine and be shared (but I'm not certain - that may be something else - though it's worth a try).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

A:Shared Folders Over The Network

Hello LVL50RR9,

Sounds more likely to be a firewall issue rather than an AV issue. are you trying to install an AV suite that contains a firewall?

If so you need to open the required ports on the W7 PC to allow file sharing.

I normally open ports 135 - 138 and 445 for win 7 - how you do this depends on the firewall involved

Hi to all

I don’t how to ask this or to explain it, but I will try my best to do so.
Just want to give you as much information as possible, hope I don’t confuse you.
I have a Server 2003 domain, and all the computers on the local network have WinXp Pro SP2. The company is divided into to buildings the “finance building” and “consultants building”.
The finance building: The Server2003 with a 16port switch, a Planet Access Point, an ADSL internet router. The Server2003, Planet Access Point is connected with CAT5 to the 16port switch and the ADSL router is connected to the Server2003 for internet. So the computer’s that is in the finance building connects wireless to the Planet Access Point (1). From this 16port switch is a CAT5 cable to the consultants building. The consultant’s building has a 4port switch that connects the CAT5 cable coming from the finance building. The 4port switch then connects to another Planet Access Point (2). Computers in the consulting building connect to the Planet Access Point (2).

I hope that explains the lay out of the network for you, and that you are not confused.

Now to where I actually want to be. The computers in the consultants building can only browse the network to folders that are sync with the user computer and the server. The computer can browse the domain network see all the computers on the network but can only see the sync folder on the Server2003 and not the rest of the shared folders. This happens intermittently.

Hello,

I am trying to put in place a back up system for backing up a NAS to an external hard drive. My computer is connected to the NAS via ethernet with the external hard drive connected to my computer via USB 3.0. I would like to set up scheduled backups of these folders to the external hard drive.

In addition I do also want to back up to a cloud based storage system (another job for another day) but as I already have a 2TB hard drive, I would like to use this for backing up the NAS.

The problem I find is that I don't know which back up software will I be able to do this with, most software focuses on backing up the workstation itself or an entire hard disk. I don't mind paying for this and so I'm not just looking for free versions but I'm not sure which software is the best for what I want to do.

Thanks for any help

Hi, I have a problem with my network folders for my dad's pc. His pc is what I primarily use to download software and such so I just network his folder so that I can gain access to downloaded files w/o going through other medias such as a flash drive etc.

Problem is that when a file is recently downloaded a lock appears on the file and is not accessible to other computers in the network, while my other computers have no problem similar to this . Also my dad's network folder has only 2 main folders that I have shared: My Documents and Downloads. But in the network folder there are around 7 copies of each folder, i.e. Downloads~1 - Downloads~7 all with the same contents and such and its cluttering the network folder . What do I do to repair this? I have tried unsharing the folder and sharing it again with no luck.

Any help w/ this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have 3 machines on a wired home network. Each computer is running a different windows OS. Machine A is XP, machine B is Vista64/ultimate, machine C is Windows7/64.

I've got one master file on B which I use as the shared file. It's located in My Documents and it's called "Shared Network Documents".

When I use machine C, the W7/64, I can go to the orb, computer, and select machine B (the vista machine) under "network". When I do that, I see 14 shared folders.

They are:

The last one, called "SharedNetwor" is the one I really use all the time.

How do I eliminate all the ~ folders?

This has to be something fairly basic, but I haven't found a solution anywhere.

Hmm, it's worse than I thought.

Remember, computer B, the vista machine, is the one I want to use as the physical repository for my shared files.

Sitting at computer C, the W7 machine, I can see computer B's network files as I listed them above. However, I can alos see computer C under network. That seems odd. I'm at C and it's listed under network. I opened up computer C under network and it shows 52 shared folders. That's about 51 more than I want.

They use the same "name~#" format as above. In this case there are 5 folders which have up to ~12 copies.

This is crazy!! How do I get rid of all this?

Well here's the deal,

I am on a DLS line thru a router, which links to many other users in my building.

We have a workgroup thru which we share files, I would like to know if it is possible to put passwords on certain shared folders so that only users on the same workgroup with the password can access them?

Thank you

A:How to set passwords on network folders

What version of Windows? For 2K or XP-Pro, you should be able to allow only users with an account on the machine with the shared resources to access them. Just set the permissions on the shared resources not to allow access by Everyone. If the environment is different, maybe you can tell us exactly what the mix of machines is.

I have a peer to peer lan and I use an offline backup utility for my computer, which is pretty much the only computer that does anything here. Don't get me started!

Anyway, there are one or two folders on one of the other computers that I would like to include in my backup without having to pay for another computer. I had thought to set up something like briefcase on my computer to automatically update those folders onto my hard drive periodically.

Can't find briefcase in XP.

Suggestions? I thought about having them access my forms, but if they change them and mess them up.... NO. I would rather keep the originals and also pick up for saving offsite any that they put on there.

Thanks for any suggestions. I'll also look on the web and see if I can find briefcase hiding out for download.

Hi all,

I have 2 desktop pcs, both running XP Pro SP2, both have HDDs partitioned into multiple partitions. Have DSL modem from Verizon hooked to a WRT54G router from Linksys.
Modem is wired to router, router is WIRED to both pcs.
Both pcs can connect to internet fine!

Have previously set up folder/partition sharing on both pcs and all worked fine!
All of a sudden I can not access pc1 (rln-1),(Dell 8100 PC), folders/partitions from pc2 (ACER-2005), but I can access pc2 folders/partitions from pc1.
I get the attached error message when trying to access pc1 from pc2.

pc1 has a password needed when first logging on. I have tried to get rid of it but the pc1 at logon, still comes up and asks me for a password! Don't know why this happens! pc2 skips logon screen and just starts Windows!

I am at a loss for how to get file/partition sharing back to working and wud greatly appreciate any and all help!!
Thank you very much!
Sincerely,
Cindy ;>)

My experience is limited to XP only; so some things look different to me. I found this path: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\services.exe which seems odd. Is a temp folder where Vista would place services.exe, or does this indicate a problem?

I'm writing a batch file which calls a 32 bit .exe program. I want it to be compatible with the different Windows operating systems. The problem is that the path to "Program Files" is different depending which OS is being used. For instance:

I know the paths for these OS' since I use them:
- WinXP 32 bit: C:\Program Files\
- Vista 64 bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\

Could some kind souls please tell me what the 32bit paths are for:
- WinXP 64 bit:
- Vista 32 bit:

And for Windows 7 also would be nice:
- Win7 32 bit:
- Win7 64 bit:

A:Paths , Librabries ?

You need to remember that library's only point to the actual file somewhere on the network or on your own machine in the "user" files. If you need to delate something from the library you should delate the file from the actual source "my pictures" My documents" "my music".

But there is a way to make it work like you want.

Just go into Windows Media Player, choose the "organize" tab then "options" then choose the Library tab and set it to "delate files from the computer when delated from the Library. Although I believe that only works if you are delating files from Library of the machine that contains the source files.

That should allow for delating from the Library, but only from the machine that the files reside on, I don't believe it will work accross the network. It think it still works best if you delate from the file source instead of the Library.

All,

Looking for a way to add a single file to an existing .ZIP file, but need to specify the path within the existing file structure.

Example - I ZIP a directory and it's subs with all of their files. It has about 6 different subs and each of them have up to 10 subs of their own.
C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\PE\SUB1\file1.asp

I need to add 1 single file and tell it that the path I want it to go to is:
C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\PE\SUB1\file2.asp

BUT - the file is not coming from the same directory on the system being used to create the ZIP.

Please help.

A:How to make xp app paths key available

Sounds like a permissions issue of some kind.

Right click App Paths then click Permissions
Administrators and System should have Full Control and Read access, Power Users should have Read and Special, and Users should have Read access. Creator Owner should have Special. These should all be greyed out, meaning they are inherited.

I have an interesting but vexing situation. Hope you can advise me. I am working on our church computers. We have a network set up (main computer is Win 7, all others are XP) with ethernet connections on our staff computers. Guest networks are wireless. We have a Seagate 1T. external hard disk plugged into the router USB. I have installed SyncbackSE paid version into the office computer. I am very happy with it, it allows automatically scheduled backups of all user files with no staff input. So far so good.

However, I am having a fit over the remote computer backups. I have set up the remote computers to hibernate and wake to run the backups. But the minister and Director of Religious Education have files that should not be accessible to anyone else for confidentiality reasons. I have disabled simple share and tried to set Special Permissions on My Documents in the Minister's computer, giving her as a user full control but "everyone" only "read list" control, but I can still see and open all her files on the Network. Obviously, I am not doing this right. The external hard drive (READYSHARE on the network) is not a user, so I cannot set permissions just for it. I need the hard drive to be able to save these files, while making them inaccessible to the other computers on the network. Can you give me a hand? Thanks!

A:Keep folders private, but still allow network backup on xp

It would be far easier, and safer, if you used a backup method that was designed to maintain security.

I'd suggest an imaging program, like Paragon Drive Backup or Acronis Backup & Recover. They both allow file/folder backups in addition to the full system backups, and they have options to password-protect the backups, as well as to keep or dispense with the file/folder permissions assigned on the source drives. Files backed up to FAT32 lose all their security, and in NTFS, they take on the security of the folders they are moved to.

Other, free versions, may have some of those features, too.

Free system imaging/backup software:

Macrium Reflect (Free)
O&O Disk Image Express
Comodo Time Machine
Clonezilla Live (A bootable CD of Debian with Clonezilla.)
Paragon Backup & Recovery
Drive Image XML
PING (Partimage is not Ghost)
Partition Saving
Clonezilla

After upgrading from XP Pro to W7 64, users can no longer access network folders when working remotely using a VPN. Users were able to access the folders using XP Pro. Users can access other network devices, such as printers, when working remotely. Users are able to access network folders when working locally on the network.

To trouble-shoot, I have ensured the security and share settings are set correctly on the network folders. I have also changed some settings in gpedit/computer configuration/windows settings/security settings/local policies/security options. All had no positive affect. Can still access network shares remotely using XP.

I have a Iomega Prestige hard drive of 2TB connected to my Linksys E3000 router.

I have logged into the router with an admin account, yet I am unable to delete most files. When I try to delete something I get the following error.

I have no idea what the S-1-5-25-... account is, I'm guessing it's my router.
When I click "Try Again" the file seems to be gone, but it has actually just become invisible, it's still there.
I've tried to use Take Ownership, but that just gives an error "Access denied".
According to the router settings I should have read and write permissions.
When I connect the drive directly to my PC there are no issues.

Could anyone please help me solve this.

Ok, so on my desktop with vista ultimate 64, i can not write files to network folders. I can copy from and read files from network folders just fine, but as soon as i try to copy to or write to a network folder, whether on another computer or on my NAS, my computer instantly freezes. I don't mean that explorer.exe stops responding, i mean FREEZES. I can't move the mouse, hit control+alt+delete, or anything. What else is strange is that this desktop has VMware running a virtual XP machine on it, and the virtual machine, which is sharing my wireless adapter, can copy files to network folders just fine. Hi guys,

This is my first post, so please accept my apologies if i make any mistakes.

I've recently setup a media pc and have installed a program called XBMC, but my question is mainly related to Windows 7 and Network Sharing

SCENARIO
Currently i have the following:-
ONE Media PC with 2 user accounts (Administrator and MediaPC):
Windows 7 Ultimate & XBMC on C: (250gb hard drive)
Media files on D: (1TB hard drive)
ONE Office/Gaming PC (One user account - Billy) - only i use it
ONE Laptop (wireless) - (One user account - Family) kids/family use it
All the above computers are on Win 7 connected on the same homegroup to my virgin media superhub.

GOAL
I want to network share the Media PC - D: drive with my Office PC (Billy Account) which should have FULL READ/WRITE/MODIFY RIGHTS access.

At the same time, I want to Totally DENY ACCESS to the kids laptop (Family Account), so they cannot SEE the media drive.

Is this possible? If so, how do i go about implementing it? I've got a limited knowledge of networking, so please could you explain exactly what i need to do?

Thanks!

A:How do I Network Share Folders? (Windows 7)

This should help follow step #5: Permissions - Allow or Deny Users and Groups

Since you have 7 Ultimate this may also help: Group Policy - Apply to a Specific User or Group

But if you use the Group Policy Editor you should also use this for security: Local Users and Groups MMC Snap-in - Enable or Disable

Apply the settings from the machine that has the media drive.

May I ask, are both machines Windows 7?

I have enabled sharing on all the external HDD's that are connected to my Win 7 machine. All sharing and security has been set accordingly, and works perfect......

except for some reason, my USER folder "Jay", is completely visible to both Vista machines.
When I access the Network folder on my Win 7 machine, only the Public folders are visible on the two Vista machines.

The strange thing is that when I look at the properties of "Jay" folder, it shows it as being shared, yet in the Advanced sharing window, "Jay" is NOT shared. "users" folder is shared, so I am assuming this is why "Jay" is shared as it is a sub-folder of "users".

And when I look at the permission settings for "Jay", only myself and SYSTEM had permissions.

Now, I managed to workaround this by adding another permission rule to the "Jay" folder. I added NETWORK and set it to DENY straight across the board.

So now, my roommates can still see my USERS folder, but cannot access it.
This, however, is NOT ideal, as this also blocks them from seeing/accessing my PUBLIC folder. I only set the NETWORK deny permissions on "Jay" folder, yet ALL network sub-folders of USERS are blocked.

Sounds to me like you set up a Homegroup with mixed Op systems which it really was not made for. For some reason doing this seems to allow the User folders on the Win 7 machines to be shared out, you havn't mentioned if you set up a Homegroup or Workgroup so I can only guess at this?

If you want more control over whats being shared then don't use Homegroups for a mixed OP system network, you should leave the Homegroup on your Windows 7 machines and then set up a Workgroup instead.

Hi, hope someone can help me here. Got a laptop with a new clean install of Win2K on a Win2K3 server network. User has network drives as all files are stored centrally on the server.

When logged on to the laptop with the network Administrators profile I can select a mapped network drive and make it available off line - no problem at all, behaves exactly as I expect.

When logged in as the primary user (who has admin privileges for the machine) I can't find any trace of the 'make available offline' option. It's not available to turn on in the Tools:Folder Options dialog, or from the Control Panel. Note: these problems are profile specific - I DO have these options as Administrator, but they have disappeared for the user.

Am I missing something fundamental? Some little check-box hidden away somewhere? Or can I jump start it by manually running the Offline files wizard?

On behalf of my frustrated user (and myself for that matter) I look forward to your replies.

Please point me to previous posts on this issue but I've spent days searching for this wierd problem.

My desktop's My Network Places stopped accepting its own new share files/folders. Previous file shares are in My Network Places on three XP computers (two Home, one XP Pro/Media) and sharing still works. My main desktop stopped recognizing new folder sharing changes on the main desktop but sees sharing changes on other workstation on the network. Please note that I am not having problem seeing shares on other computers on the net. This is only on the one computer with its own share folders. This desktop has XP Home. The main purpose of sharing is syncing files with a laptop running XP Media Center. As a workaround, I been using my mapped drive with file compares in xplorer2 to "sync."

When I try to force a new share by using "Add a network place," I get "The folder you entered does not appear valid. Please choose another." None of the folder shares I create on my C:\ or backup drive will now appear in My Network Places. The older shares that appear in My Network Places continue to work on the net.

Hello!

I have a small problem browsing my own shared folders. That is, accessing the folders through Network in Windows Explorer.

I can access folders on other computers (and they can access mine) in the Network but not my own. Windows hangs forever and gives me an error that I cannot access that folder.

Also, I cannot access my own public IP address when on that very samme IP. These issues may be related to the extent that I cannot access localhost when I'm on that host.

So, I can browse the folders on the local drive (e.g. C:\NAME\SHAREDFOLDER) but not through \\[LOCALCOMPUTERNAME]\SHARE ...

This issue cannot be reproduced on the other computers in the Network.

Any ideas?

Or just share the folders that have the files in them (My Documents Folder) and only have; 1 partition used

I have a home network that consists of 3 computers. Recently the folders on one of those computers could not be accessed by the other 2. That computer can access folders on the other 2, and the other 2 can access folders on each other.

The computer who's folders can not be accessed, will be referred to as computer number 1.
That computer is running Windows XP Professional SP3; the others are XP Home SP3.
The network is set up using a wired router.

I have checked to see that file sharing has been enabled and folder permissions have given full control to everyone.

I am using Comodo free firewall with the Windows firewall disabled. and thought that something may have been configured wrong. I disabled Comodo and enabled windows firewall without it making any difference.
The computer names are unique and the workgroup is the same on all computers. All computers show up as workgroup computers.
Computer 1 is recognized on the network, and appears in network places but the folders which show are not able to be accessed.

At this point, I am at a loss to figure what else might be checked to determine why this is occurring.
I'd appreciate any suggestions that would help me resolve this issue.

I need to open my network folder, and it prompts me for my username and password, now I enter my domain username and password, and access my files, however, I don't want to keep this folder accessible, how do i "disconnect" access to it? This machine is a server with server processes running that we shouldn't be stopping. Any ideas?

Maybe this would be better in the networking section? It's Windows 2000 btw.

Trying to get my windows network file sharing up and running again after 6 months not using it, i ran network setup wizard on both machines and now internet sharing is enabled and runs perfectly.
The problem is in network places/view workgroup computers i double click the other computers icon ( to try and get a listing of shared files on that computer) and it comes up with the error:
\\family is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server(its just a regular workstation) to find out if you have access permissions.

This is really bugging me because there are no passwords on either of the computers and i have run the network setup wizard many times and tried many different options to get file sharing to work.
The most weird thing is i can use the icons for shared network resources in my network places to gain access to the folders that do appear there(about half of the total shared folders)
Windows knowledgebase is useless(surprised i am not) and all the other similar cases seem to be unsolved, just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or knows what the problem could be a result of.
some info:
Both PC's running windows XP SP2
I have tried disabling firewalls on both computers.
Both computers are plugged into a D-link dsl-504 4 port adsl router and can use the internet and shared printer with no troubles.

Any help would be Extremely appreciated.
Cheers, Scott

A:Shared Folders on Windows Network

for clarity, port 139 and 445 are used for print/file sharing.

On the remote computer (ie the one without the folder being accessed),
use the Exploter Tool/Map Network Drive menu

pick a drive letter
click Browse
open the Workgroup and then the computer name you want
you should see a list of Sharible Folders to select from
IF so, continue with the selection

If NOT, then reverify, that all systems have the same Workgroup name
(ie: XP defaults to MSHOME)
Also, set the Guest account password on all systems and THEN disable
Guest Login. This then restricts file sharing to those who know the password
(just in case there's a security breach into one of the systems).

If the computer Names do not show, then check your firewall for ports above,
otherwise seeing the names implies the firewall is set correctly
