Fun parts inside old parts

Q: Fun parts inside old parts

Before you throw out your old, dead hard drives, dismantle them and recover the magnets inside.

Some of the most powerful magnets known to man are inside.

A couple of cute little motors too, but they don't like to come out easily.

A: Fun parts inside old parts

I agree, just don't put the magnets together with your fingers in the middle of them !

I have two issues that I hope you can assist me with.  The first paragraph below is for the first issue.  The second paragraph below is for the second issue.  I appreciate any assistance you could provide.

On 4/2/2016, I placed an order for a new display back cover and a set of hinges in the HP Parts Store.  My HP [personal information removed].  Total order cost = $233.91 in US dollars.  I paid for the parts already via credit card and the parts were delivered to me.  A friend of mine repairs laptops as a full time occupation.  She was planning to help me repair the broken laptop hinge and replace the back cover so part of the replacement hinge would be protected when I transport the computer.  Unfortunately, my friend found out that her sister was diagnosed with terminal cancer after I received the parts from the HP Parts Store.  My friend has been spending lots of time caring for her ill sister and her elderly parents in their 80s.  She is unable to help me repair the right hinge and back cover of my laptop.  The parts have not been touched and they are still in the boxes.  I would like to return the parts and receive a credit applied to my charge account; however the HP return policy states that parts must be returned in 14 days.  The HP Parts Store also charges a restocking fee.  Can you assist with this return transaction?  I would prefer to not pay the restocking fee.

So I'm planning on building my new PC and have found a list of all of the parts that I would like to purchase. This will be my first build and wanted to check that A) all these parts are compatible and B) that these are the best parts I can get for the money.

To clarify I will be using the PC for mainly gaming and Photoshop/other design work. The prices below are the best prices I could find online too. (Budget is about £600)
Tower - Antec 900 Nine Hundred Ultimate Gamer Case - £82.99
Power Supply - Corsair 500 Watt CX500 V2 Builder Series 80 Plus Power Supply - £44.98
CPU - Intel Core i5 2500K - £166.97
Motherboard - ASRock Z68 Extreme3 - £100.00
RAM - Patriot G Series ‘Sector 5’ Edition 4GB - £24.49
Graphics card - Sapphire RADEON HD 6850 - £118.40
Hard drive - Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB - £61

Think this all I will need (apart from a disc drive) any other hidden costs/ parts that I am missing out too?

Thanks

I bought a Mobo/CPU/DDR Combo that I saw working on the shop bench after exchanging the initial board because it wouldn't boot or show video. But since I've had the rig at home, its been one headache after the next.

Here's what I got:
Mobo = ECS 848P
CPU = Intel SL7PM (BX80546PG3000ESL7PM)
DDR = PQI MD4412UOE (DDR400/512)

Now the ECS boots but the BIOS always hangs after I press Y at the Save to CMOS prompt (but stores the settings), so I've replaced ECS with Intel's D875P8Z rev 205. I got the Intel board out of spite for the ECS but now I'm back to the first problem, no boot/no video. This time I think the CPU and Mobo don't match but the info I get HERE and HERE lists a CPU called 3E (not Etreme) that has the same 800MHz/1MB spec as the SL7PM.
Do I have the right parts?

With the Intel combo, everything powers on but no POST (I think). There are no beeps but the light on the keyboard flash random patterns. Could there be a special P4 step I'm missing when installing?

Thanks

A:Do I have the right parts?

The power-on-but-no-post symptom could be remedied by powering the barebone up outside of the case. It could be a shorting somewhere.

Updating the BIOS of your new board may correct the wrong CPU read-out.

Sent my IBuypower PC in when it wouldn't boot. They told me the motherboard, video card and liquid cooling system all dead. Around $500 just for parts. Machine cost $1200 and is 2 years 8 months old.

2 issues is smarter to a whole new machine or rebuild with oem parts. Their service was horrible so I'll have to do the rebuild.

Also can I place the hard drives from this machine into an external case and still run the programs and access the data.

I'm a professional photographer and deal with lots of 30-50 mg files at a time.

Not sure if this belongs here.

I've looked around in old boxes and stuff (cardboard) of my dad's and have noticed a whole lot of old parts laying around.

Instead of letting them just sit there getting outdated I want to do something with them, make something. Whatever but have had no ideas.

SO what do you people do with old parts?

A:What to do with old parts?

If they're usuable like CD-ROMs, floppy drives, hard drives - recycle them in new builds. Even older, lower capacity hard drives can be used as external drives with a USB to IDE adapter.

If not, sell 'em on ebay. That's what I do.
I used to run a computer salvage business years ago.
When I retire from the military in the next few years, I might get back into it.

Recently I've been doing some upgrading to my 3 year old desktop computer. Went from 750gb Harddrive to 1tb...Switched out graphic card Nvidia Geforce 8500GT 512mb for Nvidia Geforce 9500GT 1gb

I'm interested in replacing the motherboard, processor, and adding more memory. I don't want to do all this at the same time so initially what I get would have to be an upgrade but would still have to be compatible with what I have currently.

Would like to have 8gb memory, & faster processor by the end of it...

Firstly though would like to replace the motherboard (it's older and I've been having problems that might be associated with it). I have a HP Pavillion m9200t so whatever motherboard that would fit that case is what I'm looking for. Has to be able to hold 8gb of memory DDR2 800ghz. My video card is a PCI-e so would need a slot for that...and at the very least 4 x usb. I have windows vista 64-bit home prem and have had no problems with this os and probably going to keep it as appose to buying windows 7.

I've noticed that you can buy motherboards as a separate or bundled with CPU. With that in mind I'm thinking I should get a bundled package??? I'm looking to get something that will work good, last awhile (another 3 years or more???) but isn't extremely expensive or too top of the line. I heard ASUS was a good brand.

I have to say I've switched out parts on desktops like harddrive, memory, videocard, cd drive, power ... Read more

So, decided I should do a little outside the case upgrading. Problem is, since most of my expertise is on case hardware, I have no clue whats good, or where to buy said items im looking for, so hoping someone can help me out.

Parts I'm looking for is new speakers, new mouse/keyboard, and a webcam. I'm looking for something good, reliable and does the job, some fancy perks would be nice, but nothing wallet breaking. I don't wanna spend $1000 on them, but preferably less then say ooh $300-$400 max, any less and it be better.. The ones I have now, are your basic Walmart bottom barrel ones, they work, but my mouse is already going out and my speakers sound like they're on the way out as well. So any advice, on what kind, where to buy online, so on and so forth would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Everybody,
Ok I was thinking about buliding a low-end computer just for Internet use for my father. I already have a mointer, keyboard, mouse, speakers, cd-rw drive, 250w p/s. I dont want a floppy drive in it. And the motherboard doesnt have to have intergrated ethernet becuase I also have an pci ethernet card. I dont want a dial-up modem in it either.

So basicly what recommendation for a case, motherboard and cpu. Also the motherboard has to have intergrated sound and video. I am guessing a celeron cpu? Also what ram should I get in terms of how many mb or gb's. Is 256mb of ram enough?

Thank you very much techspot members

I am looking for spring loaded push lock fasteners that are used to secure heatsinks and coolers to video cards, chipsets, etc. I am familiar with the following items, but I prefer straight spring loaded pins without the bow.

I am familiar with everything located here;

http://www.performance-pcs.com/cata..._in_description=1&keyword=push+lock+fasteners

and here;

http://www.xsfans.com/4pack-ziotek-...6.html?zenid=e601f24968cc7718e8d18c314b77cc3a

I know I can secure the coolers with thermal adhesive so you don't have to recommend that since I have plenty of thermal adhesive.

If you happen to be familiar with a company that stocks the pins without a bow, if you would post a link to the website it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

PSU, Mobo and Case must be ATX

Type of RAM module must be supported by mobo

FSB of RAM and CPU shouldn't be higher than mobo's FSB

CPU socket type must match that of the motherboard...

graphics card you want must also be able to be used on the motherboard (PCI-E or AGP, etc)

mobo and PSU have same number of pins (for mobo power socket)

Is this all right, or am I missing something else? Thanks!

A:Need to know if these parts are Compatable.

In short, yes those are all compatiable.

The mobo is 939 with pcie x16. Your video card is also pcie x16 and you CPU is a 939.

I like your thinking on the mobo, getting one without the annoying little fan. My only recomendation to your upgrade is maybe make the jump to dual core. With an extra $50 or so you can get the x2 3800+

Also you should be sure to have adequate RAM, 512mb won't cut it anymore. Check your RAM and see if its DDR 400 (pc 3200) because thats the max of your mobo, and if its not I would recomend getting some.

Happy trails!

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/2161/14...archtype=genre

Also, is there any better alternatives at a similar price? (I live in the UK)

Thanks

A:Are these parts compatible?

They are compatible, HOWEVER, the motherboard needs a BIOS flash before it supports the CPU. It is also possible that it's impossible to flash the BIOS without a natively supported CPU, like this one: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135662
Motherboards supporting AM2+ CPUs straight out of the box are expensive, so your best shot is either borrowing one of the 7309v90 BIOS supported CPUs, (check here: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1472&maincat_no=1#menu ) or crossing your fingers and hoping the Kuma will be recognized as an Unidentified CPU, and works for the time of the BIOS flash. Or then get that 5200+. It will be a bit slower but... Up to you.

A:Pagefile in two parts, why?

Not sure at all...what you mean.

Are you talking physical location on the hard drive...or are you referring to two locations for "pagefile" on the hard drive when looking via Explorer?

All files...may not necessarily be in one contiguous location...that's what fragmentation is.

I read online that it could be the power supply but I don't know where I can order the right one since it is such an old model. I also need a new cpu. Does anyone know where I can order them?? Thank you for your time

Hi, i'll dive straight in and say that i think i need a whole new pc. i think something shorted on my mobo and now nothing works, it won't turn on. ?I think the PSU is ok because after it shutdown (it happened whilst it was on) the fans kept rinng, like they're meant to (Enermax PSU).

So i think i need a new mobo and cpu to go with it, and quite possibly a new graphics card. I'm not worrying about RAM too much because i think i'll probably get that from eBay.

Basically i'm asking for advice on what i could buy, but on a pretty tight budget. I was thinking possibly this cpu AMD Sempron 3000+ and this mobo DFI INFINITY NF4X Socket 754 but nothing's definate yet so i'm fairly flexible.

Thanks in advance

Oh, i found this on eBay too if it's any good

I'd like to know if these parts are compatible to run?
I got an HP G62 laptop with intel i3 330M and I'm upgrading to a i7-640M @2.8Ghz - Turbo: 3.5GHz.
and I heard about eGPUs that can run on PCI express so I was putting in mind to get something like GTX 750Ti or something kinda lower or higher, I don't know actually.
So, in brief, is the i7-640M compatible with the range of GTX750Ti?

A:Are these parts compatible with each other?

Would anybody mind to help me before I do make something faulty?

A:Help me buy/add some new parts to my computer! (yay)

It really depends what you want the machine for - The weak points I see with the current machine:Video card is low end so not really suitable for gamingPower supply is cheap and not something I would trust4gb RAM is somewhat low these daysOnly has a mechanical hard driveSo I'd look into upgrading one or more of the above depending on what you want from the machine.  For gaming you would need to get a better video card (and a power supply from a reputable brand, don't trust the one it has with any sort of decent video card).  An SSD to hold your operating system and programs would help it start up and launch programs faster (and generally feel more responsive in general use).  RAM is bearable if you aren't doing loads of multitasking but if you find yourself running low on RAM it could be worth looking into bumping this up to 8gb.As to what parts to go for it really depends on what you want to upgrade along with your budget.

I have been planning on making a laptop cooler for a hard materials (wood/metal works) project and have come to the stage where i need to start gathering parts... one of these parts that I have had significant trouble finding is a hub/chipboard with multiple PWM fan headers that is powered with a single USB (so that I can run my 2 fans off a USB port on my laptop), I was wondering if anyone here has any idea of what i am looking for, I need to get it pretty soon and I'm getting slightly worried. I just need some suggestions on where i should be looking, or any products that fit the description, as well as some more helpful search terms as I am having trouble coming up with anything that is anything like what I need.
Also I am in New Zealand so availability to certain tech brands is a bit more limited than you guys in big countries, although all suggestions are welcome.

If I do get the cooler done i will post some photos of it as well.

I'm pretty sure that laptops are ok to go through x-ray machines because at the single airport I've been to there was a notice saying "Please leave any laptops in it's bag with the bag open".

Just looked it up and yes it is safe as x-rays are not magnetic so will not mess up the hard drive or any other parts. Just make sure they do not metal detect you as that WILL mess it up.

suggestions?

Those will work with any OS, the Vista thing is just because they give enough power to run Vista properly. Have you checked that the RAM is compatible with your motherboard? (not only throught size and speed. Also voltages, chip size, etc.)

Well I'm a noobie and after hours of research, I think I finally have all the parts I need (to play css and hl2 on max). Here it goes:

-Power Supply
-Video Card
-Ram
-Processor
-Motherboard
-Case Cooler
-CPU Cooler

I'm about 99% sure these are all compatible. My question is, will I be able to run games like CSS on relatively high settings and still be able to use my comp for Flash MX/Photoshop cs2/etc? How do you overclock my processor and what would I need to keep it from overheating? Thanks guys.

I?m doing a school project with a couple of other 6th formers, its a kind of 'challenge week' that our schools running, and were running a modding shop were we basically take an older PC and try and do it up as much as possible so its of some use today, on a very limited budget (approx. £100). I need to find (preferably) 2 512mb DDR2100 sticks of ram and the budget is too small to purchase them from a shop when other expenses are taken into account so I was wondering if anyone has any idea's on where to get older parts (already raided our I.C.T stock cupboard, they gave us a 17 inch CRT which is quite nice of them ). Plus ideally (but not necessary) we could do with a faster Athlon XP than we've currently got, at the mo its running a 1600, we are going to try to run Battlefield 2 on this, after all it is a challenge week, so need to get the 'best' old parts available at our budget level. Of course if anyone has any older parts they don?t need then that would be greatly appreciated, but generally any advice would be great, just kind of wondering whether there?s a dedicated 'old parts' shop online or something I?ve never come across. Finally, if anyone has any idea what the minimum graphics card (AGP) would be to run Battlefield 2 then that would be useful, I know there?s the minimum specs but they often underestimate dramatically from what I've seen.
Thx

A:Where to get older parts

not shore where you can shop over in europ, i heard www.newegg.com is shippig their soon you can look there for some ram and an agp card ( i recomend you get atleast a ati 9600xt or nvivda 6600 in agp in order to play battlefield 2 without lag.) Your prossor is kind of aging (BF2 requires a 1.8ghz or xp1800+ or better but i got away with runig it on my P4 1.6)

good luck and have fun

I have to build a computer for my CMT school project, though I've decided to upgrade my current one, (seen in my sig), and use the old parts to rebuild the new computer for my mom. Now, if you look at my specs, you'll notice that I have an 8800GTS with 1GB of RAM, but an Athlon 64+ 3000. Yes, I know it's a huge bottleneck. I upgraded my videocard, powersupply, and hard drive last year, so I will not be needing to replace those for the rebuild. To upgrade, I need a new motherboard, RAM, and processor.

That will leave me with my old videocard (6600GT), old powersupply (350W I think), old hard drive, current motherboard, ram and processor to build a new computer for my mom. I will need to buy a new case and CD/DVD drives to finish it off.

So in short:

I need a new motherboard, processor, and RAM for my current computer (in sig), and then a new case and CD/DVD drives for this computer:

Athlon 64+ 3000
6600GT
Chaintech NForce4 Ultra ATX Motheboard
80GB Harddrive
350Watt Antec powersupply

In total, I don't really want to spend more than $300. I plan on buying a bit later, maybe in November, so I'll be checking again before I buy to be sure I'm getting the most efficient deals. I plan on ordering from Newegg.

If this doesn't make any sense then please tell me and I'll try to reword it.

EDIT: I guess you have to view my profile to see my sig, so to make it easier I'll post my specs here:

The cheapest thing to do is to buy a new printer. You buy a decent inkjet for under $100. It saves you the trouble of finding and replacing the part

Also, odds are pretty good that a new printer will be of better quality

So, i have another PC sitting here doin a whole lot of nothing.

What I would like to know is if I can swap out the processors for the better (2.66ghz) in the other one.

The other one doesnt have a HDD as it was taken for evidence. By chance i happened to come across this thing and got it free.

Anyways, I dont have access to another HDD at the moment and would like to know if they are the same socket before i go out and buy some thermal paste and rip the PCs apart.

Mine is a Intel Celeron @ 1.8 ghz and the CPU that i want is a Pentium 4 @ 2.66 ghz.

Is there any way to find out what socket type they both are without gutting them?

For under 400 bucks.

Currently, price is $333.00.

Answer Match 64.26%

I've been given an opportunity to build a new PC using the following website:
http://www.umart.com.au/pro/build_computer1.phtml?bid=4

I need to keep the price at around $1200, I can probably afford up to $1400 but only if absolutely necessary. These are the guidelines I need to follow:

- I'd like an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
- At least 1GB DDRII RAM
- Just one HD, preferably 250GB or bigger
- A good nVidia graphics card for gaming, preferably from the 7XXX series of cards
- Decent case which won't require any extra cooling, with a good power supply

I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to choosing parts that are compatible with each other, so any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Assume that any parts I haven't mentioned such as monitor, mouse etc. are not needed.

I have a problem with a Winbook V410, no display on the screen, just the backlight is working. I can control the brightness from the keyboard. Plug into external monitor, I can use the laptop, allthe information shows up.
I was told that it might be the LCD inverter or the screen itself. I've looked online for both of those parts and can't locate any sites that carry those parts. Would anybody know where I can get those parts.

A:Locating Parts

It seems unless you are in the trade getting spare laptop parts is impossible (unless contacting the maker and paying a fortune)
The only place I have managed to find laptop spares is Ebay

A:building a pc i have parts what else do i need??

Personally and experience I would not use that board at all I would go with Asus.MSI DFI or even Chaintech Do a search on newegg for a board .The board you picked is real cheap and you get what you pay for remember the motherboard should be as good as the cpu you place in there and a good motherboard will last a lot longer and give you better overall proformance .ALso go with a good brand name power supply like Thermotake OCZ Antech to name a few jsut becuse the powersupply says 550w dont mean it is this all has to do with effiecenty.. As for your ram any brand Kingston ,Cosiar OCZ Geial all very good brands.

A:Are these parts compatible

Motherboard = backbone of system. Everything revolves around this. SO...

CPU = check (Opteron matches socket 939 and series 100 req)
OS (Operating System) = check (64-bit edition matches CPU)
VidCards = Unknown
OD1 (Optical Drive) = check (recommendation: check for SATA capable drive)
OD2 = check (recommendation: check for SATA capable drive)
Case = check
PSU = questionable. Check a different manufacturer. Make sure +12V rails have high amps (at least 22; more is better). Wattage is about right. Check out Corsair, Enermax, or Antec
Monitor = check (but some recommend at least a 20" to 22" screen with a native res of 1440 x 900 (which it has) and a response time of less than 3ms)
Memory = check (but I prefer Kingston or Corsair)

Now...are we forgetting anything?

*cough, cough* HARD DRIVE *cough, cough*

Hi everyone,

I am building a new system and I am deliberating over a couple of components.

I was wondering whether to go for this Leadtek graphics card:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/138666
or this Inno one:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/138551

They are both 8800gts I am just wondering which one is better and what warranty I will get on each of them.

Also, I am thinking of getting this cooler:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/105994
but I am also thinking about this one:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127437

I may wish to do some overclocking so I am not sure which one I should get.

Also, I am getting this case and PSU:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141707
However, I have been advised to possibly get this PSU but I am not sure:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/114945.

I would just like some thoughts on these because once I have decided, I can then go ahead and buy the parts to build my new system.

Thanks for any advice it is much appreciated.
Gareth.

A:Opinions on parts to buy

I'd get the Leadtek card. I've never heard of that other brand, but Leadtek has a pretty good reputation. Plus it's 10 cheaper.

As for CPU coolers, I'd choose the AC cooler. The Freezers are really good.

That case comes with a decent PSU. Coolermaster makes good stuff. Technically the Corsair is a slightly better unit, but I don't think you'll be gaining THAT much by spending the money you don't have to.

I've finally decided to get a new computer. I want to game on it, so I was originally going to go with an Alienware, but they seem kind of overpriced to me. I thought it'd be cheaper if I built one myself, and I'd learn things too.

So, if I have a budget of about $2000, what's the best system I can make? I don't know anything about recent advances in hardware, so I don't know what processor or video card or RAM or what-have-you is the new standard of awesome.

Thanks a lot for any suggestions

You have had at least 14BSODs in the last three days.
Two related to programs, Java, and Chrome.
Three related to outdated drivers.
And, the others Memory.

Are you sure your virus/malware clean??
This going to take some doin' on your part.
What I would like you to do is to unequivocally uninstall Java, and chrome.

Hi Drew,
STOP 0x101 is CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT which indicates your processor (CPU) in fault. Run Prime95 for CPU errors: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...t-prime95.html
Run Blend, Small, Large FFTs Tests

Download, Install and Run Speedfan to monitor your CPU temperatures: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer
If you got anymore dumps - upload them too.

I am using window 7 Professional 64 bit edition. I put this new system together and have been getting a few different BSODs ever since putting it together. Here are the specs:

Corsair 750 watt power supply
XFX Radeon HD 5770
AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition
MSI 870A-G54 Motherboard
Corsair XMS 4GB DDR3

I attached the dump files but I get getting BSODs for random things, sometimes its in the middle of a game, other times it's simply when I'm browsing the internet. I have already reinstalled windows multiple times as well as RMA'd my video card and processor. I ran memtestx86 for a few nights and there were no errors. Since I just reinstalled windows, all the drivers I do believe are up to date and there are almost no other programs installed. Please let me know if I left any information out. Thanks!

A:BSODs, Have already RMA'd a few parts.

Hi,
Your dumps have error code:
- 0x50 = that invalid system memory (could be RAM or driver)
- 0xF4 = system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated.

You have memory corruption issue so perform memory test for at least 7 passes.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Code:
BugCheck 50, {fffffa801235299b, 0, fffff80002a8cd3b, 2}
Could not read faulting driver name
Probably caused by : memory_corruption ( nt!MiAgeWorkingSet+41b )
Uninstall Alcohol/Daemon and remove its driver with Sptdinst.
You could re install that software later after your system stable.

The worse thing is your performance report indicated: CPU, Graphic, Disk, and Memory are in the poor performance.
Maybe there is something wrong with your motherboard.

Hello,

What's a good program to split a PDF file?

For example, I have a 100 page file, but only really need pages 65 - 90, how do I save these pages separately?

Thanks.

A:Splitting PDF into parts

1) You can do it quite easily in Adobe Acrobat Pro. Use the "Document-> Extract Pages..." menu item. Then Drag and drop pages into another document from the "Pages" navigation tab.

2) There are many, many 3rd party products for splitting PDFs. Just do a web search on "Split PDF".

Pretty hot machine. It should be okm its a good motherboard that will be able to cope with 1GB of ram. FSB should be 133mhz not 266mhz because it is double data rate which a lot of ppl get wrong. PCI should be 32bit and if you have 64 bit ones then it will be 64bit. AGP settings should be left to default but with all you memory you could set the AGP apature size to 256MB and the you would have 768MB system memory which is loads enuf and mega good graphics with 265mb of memory. Tell me how much you paid for that cos it seems like a lot

A:Where can I buy T460 parts from?

Hello, rygar_Discrete graphics chip is soldered to the systemboard. So, to upgrade laptop you have to ... replace the systemboard and cooling system, at least. T460 with discrete graphics is available in the US only (presently). As well the DIS-systemboards, but presently such boards aren't orderable.
