Can't get GPO Editor to work with Active Directory

Q: Can't get GPO Editor to work with Active Directory

Hi, I am a complete newbie to window server though I had manage to install it without any real issue. I had put up Active Directory and get a client (xp) to join its domain and I'm really impress with what it' does since my purpose of wanting to use server was just for Centralizing our small company files. now here come the whole day headaches I wanted to apply the Group Policy's permission/restriction for each individual user to work with Active Directory but I' can't seem to get it right no matter how hard try.

Let say, User 1 (Clients whose connect to domain) can only access a specific Folder but not User 2 and User 2 can access a specific Folder but not restricted for User 1 , user 3 can't access it's local control panel, user 4 can't save or create file on desktop and so forth

Can someone please walk me through step by step on how to achieve this very issue, please help me out...

A: Can't get GPO Editor to work with Active Directory

Hmm.. So what's with the subject? Can you actually create policies and suchlike?

For folder access you don't need policies. Filesystem access is set in the security tab of the folder properties. You can give and revoke access by users and groups no problem. (Or do you want to restrict this folder on a lot of computers at once?)

Before you can do anything with GPOs, you have to download and install the management utility: gpmc.msi Play around with it a little and see some guides about it on the net.

A step by step how to would be pointless because you would miss a lot of essential facts about group policies.

Hello.
We are using active directory accounts in our network. Recently, my account seems not to work.
When I login using my account (using my computer), I cannot access shared folders which I used to.
When I login using another account (using my computer), it works without any problem.
When I login using my account in another computer, it also works.
What could be the problem?
Thanks.

One of my client's Active Directory server (Windows 2003 Server) went down when we installed Service Pack 2. We were able to remove the service pack and get it running again, but until then the client was without any Internet connectivity, due to their DHCP running on the Windows AD. It was a six hour nightmare.

Can a Windows Active Directory do its job without running its own DHCP service? We would like to unload the DHCP from the Windows box to a Linux box or even to the WatchGuard router, but I am not sure how well the Windows server would take this hit to its functionality (or ego ).

Thanks for any insights into this issue.

Try reinstalling the RSAT. Run command prompt as an administrator and then enter the following to uninstall it:

Code:
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:958830
Then go to: http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...RefreshPkg.msu and download a new copy.

Make sure you are using the correct version (x86/x64). I have linked to the x64 because I saw from your screen shot that you're on a 64 bit machine.

How often will you update this?

If its a one time deal, excel, Dsquery/ dsget and a little vbs/ JS can get you done... querying the LDAP is not too hard to put into a txt file or xls. Cleaning it up can be depending on how much you want to put into the development.

I have a Win2000 server, main DC for 80 users with Active Directory. We don't use Exchange and I wanted to remove it. Tried uninstalling but that messed up our IIS webpage, so I restored system state and all was fine.
Then I followed Microsoft directions for manually removing Exchange. Still messed up IIS webpage (said it's under construction) even though IIS was reinstalled. At the same time it messed up Active Directory even though system state was restored to earlier good state, and all I can figure is it happened because the Exchange object was deleted from AD.
Now my 2nd Win 2000 DC won't recognize or see anything on the entire network but itself, although it can be accessed across the network and does replicate AD from the other server. It doesn't show the other 2 domains on NT servers except when I was rebooting the main 2000 DC.
My users can't access some of their folders on the main server (this server is a key file server for active work) so I have given some of them logons on one of the other domains, but it's an old domain I am phasing out and so still they can't access everything they need from one logon.
Trust relationships are OK. DNS is OK. AD replicates to the other server. Creating new logons on AD doesn't help - they are as messed up as the old ones. No DHCP. No Internet connection, no connection to anything outside, no wireless access to the network - it is totally self-contained and internal.

I'm attempting to run Active Directory in Win2000 Server from MMC, using "Run As" to log on to the domain. Not having much luck. My support at work is not the most helpful (imagine that?). It's an odd setup...I have my own server for my dept, but cannot log on with my domain account. So I'm looking for a way to access Active Directory while logged in as the local admin on my server. Confused? I am. Any suggestions helpful.

A:MMC and Active Directory

When trying to access a server, you can only use the default domain admin account. You cannot use any other account to log onto the server itself. If you would like to administer active directory through your workstation, simply install the administrative tools from the Windows 2000 Server CD on your workstation. The admin tools are located in the Support Folder, Tools Folder. Once you install those, you will have to right click the task bar and click properties. Click on the advance tab and put a check box next to Display Administrative Tools. Remember also, in order to administer Active Directory through your workstation, you need add your domain user account to the Domain Admins group on the server itself. To access the active directory tools, you can then just simply click start, programs and then administrative tools. YOU CANT USE LOCAL ADMIN ACCOUNTS TO ACCESS ACTIVE DIRECTORY.

Hi Everyone,

So in active directory I have Generic User accounts (e.g Security, Sales, Transport) as well as email accounts attached to them, Then I have user accounts (e.g John, Michael) and they have their personal email accounts attached to outlook but they will also both have the "SALES" Email address attached to their inbox in outlook.

The above is working great but my problem now comes in below.

Due to company policy we need to Lock the generic accounts down to only the computers that they are needed to log onto. (e.g in AD right click generic account then select properties, then Account, the "LOG ON TO...")

See Image below:
https://4sysops.com/wp-content/uploa...-Log-On-To.png

When i add in the computer names into the generic accounts after about 2H the generic email address stop working and refuses to accept the password. Even if i log on with the generic account Outlook still refuses to accept the password.

If you setup the additional Domain Controller as a Replication Partner it will take control if the primary Domain Controller fails, so the clients don't have to do any thing.

Here's a link describing how to set it up and validate you did it correctly: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...tory/activedirectory/stepbystep/addomcon.mspx

Hello

More of an annoyance than anything else. I currently am running a network with around 200 users half of which are remote (using a VPN to get access to email and other resources). I have 3 DC's (for resiliance) all running 2000 server. Everyday at least 10 users become locked out of there accounts, we are running exchange 5.5. Now we are migrating to Server 2003 and Exchange 2003 over the next few months, but remote users are getting locked out of the network at randomn times, and if there is noone in suport to unlock there account then they are stuffed, however sometimes it can unlock itself!!!!!! Even if you set the account to full access 24/7, password never expires, they still can be locked out. Has anyone come across this before????

Thanks

Hey guys and gals,

A few quick questions with active directory, I have just installed active directory on a windows 2000 server everything seems to be working ok except every once in awhile i'm not able to add new machines to the domain it says that the network name is not found however it prompts me for an admin logon to put it on the domain seems odd anyone have any ideas on this one?

Secondly, I have 2 network printers with their own IP's and whatnot however i am having trouble adding them to active directory i found one way of doing it and that is adding them as local printers to the server and then sharing them on the network and this worked fine for a day or so, which leeds me into my third and final ( so far ) problem for some reason i am not able to browse the network when i try to it tells me that the server does not allow transactions, however it worked one day then the next day when i came to work this little problem crept up. Please help i cant seem to find the answers anywhere. Thanks in advance

Seemingly huge problem seeking a possibly easy solution.

Ok. Background is our network runs on MS Small Business Server 2000. Users and computers were set up on Active Directory running a domain. A few weeks ago our server got hit with a virus that caused us to do a full reinstall. Active Directory was rebuilt from the ground up. Easy part was adding all the users again. Problem now is that none of the computers are registering on Active Directory.

Easy fix was to unjoin the domain and rejoin it. Solution works, but problem is that it creates a new user profile instead of using the one that was in there already. Tried to switch names (rename the new user profile to something else, rename the old user profile to the new one) but every time I logged in afterwards it created another new profile. Also tried to add the computer name to Active Directory, but that did no good either.

Anybody else have a better idea? I'd rather not unjoin and rejoin every single workstation and also migrate every single user profile on every single workstation to the new profile.

A:Active Directory

Sorry dude. You have to to rejoin all computers to the domain. There's no way around that. In the future, you can copy everyone's profiles to the server and when you recreate their user account, just set their profile to Roaming so their old profiles propagate down to their computers. Then you can set it back to local if you like. The reason why their old profiles won't work is because the security identifyers are different. Every user has one. Even if you reinstall Active Directory with the same configuration as before, it won't matter.

If you go into your profiles tab on one of the computers, it will most like say "Account Unknown."

Hai team

My Active Directory is running on windows 2000 server Is there any scope for me to make a Authentication password contain a numeric & special Character for all the users in the adcivetirectory
replay me urgently.

A:Active Directory

I don't know if there is anyway to force to use Special characters. You can set a group policy to force password complexity and you can also use a utility called passprop which in the 2000 resource kit. I think both of these only enforce you to use uppercase and lowercase as well as numbers. I am not sure if it will force special characters. These are the only two ways I know of. You should definitely be forcing the password length in a group policy because Microsofts password encyrption algorith has a flaw in it. If you have ever used lopht crack you will notice that it can immediately figure out characters 8 thru 13 when it tries to crack a password. So you need to force password lengths 14 or greater.

Look at this link.
http://is-it-true.org/nt/atips/atips93.shtml

and these policies.

I am sorta new to this, but this is my problem, we work in an office which uses active directory, i have setup multiple accounts, i have setup group policys etc.
My problem is recently we have encountered a problem with a website, the only way we have found to access it is to go onto the host file on each computer and add the ip address and the website address -
192.168.256.36 www.bwfghwoefgh.com (example)

I was wondering if there is a way using actove direcory to make this sorta change using a group policy or something, instead of me having to access each computer on the directory and edit the host file

given windows vista to the client computers. How will I make the client computers connect to my server? If I install DHCP server
will it give private IP or APIPA(169.X.X.X). With APIPA could I communicate? Also I dont have ISP becuase I am not hosting a webste.
Is it possible to have active directory in this environment? Or to have active directory I should always be conected to the internet?

Welcome to SF.

On the client, right click on computer. Left click on properties. Under computer name, domain, and workgroup settings -> select "change settings".

I typically select "Change" to specify the domain. You might want to use the wizard.

We will be upgrading our Server to Win2k and implementing Active Directory and was wondering what effect Active Directory will have on Data Recovery - Are there any issues with this, any differences we should know about.

Also when we upgrade the PDC to Win2k DC, it is a must that we install or configure Active Directory at the same time?

Thanks for all your help

A:Active Directory

You do not have to install AD when upgrading, it can be installed later. One thing to keep in mind is to install DNS on the DC during the upgrade or prior to installing AD as dynamic DNS is required for AD to work. It does not have to support anything but AD. As for Data recovery, my understanding is that there is a AD plugin for Backup Exec (if that is what you are using, probably one for each backup system) that you need to backup AD. It is structurally similar to SQL server and needs the plugin to deal with the AD db being open during backups.

If I am wrong, please correct me!

#. i have a currently active AD
i got another box and installing AD -child domain.

however it transfer all the information to the child domain.
but you can still see it in the parent AD but only in the tree(left hand side).
and Domain Controller in the parent AD disappears. and is appearing on the Child domain

then when i try to remove the child domain. i accidently select that it is the last Domain server. and removed. half way there was some error contacting my Domain.
removed the box from the network. AD still working but is not showing up data on the right window in the AD.
and it's affecting my Mail Server.

i was wondering if there's a way to recover the AD to some previous state? as i haven't add anything into the AD.

You should be able to, W2k looks for AD by default, if you cannot see it, run dcpromo from a command prompt and follow the clicks, when you installed W2k server, did you enable AD or install as a 'standard' (i.e. NT4) server ??.
If you're running AD, you need to enable GPO and enforce policies to get the most from it.

Yes, 2K3 is very much different from 2K. The Small Business Servers are very different from there corresponding regular servers.

Active Directory is not something you download - you join a domain with an account that has privileges to do so within the domain. Just change your machine location in Control Panel > System from Workgroup to Domain and enter the domain name. It should then prompt you for credentials.

Ok folks, I have this issue with NT4.0 where I need to add it to our active directory services domain. Microsoft has a client which I believe (I can be wrong) facilitates this. The name of the client is Active Directory Client Extension for nt4.0. Ok so I installed the client and attempted to create a computer account in our active directory domain which has more than 16 characters, however when I attempted to input the domain name form the NT workstation, I cant exceed 16 characters. I would appreciate if anyone has any insight into this problem as Microsoft's website provides no assistance to that issue whatsoever. Many thanks and kindest regards.

A:NT4.0 and Active Directory

Can you manually add the computer to the domain on the AD controller?

Did you try entering the pre windows 2000 domain name? You can find this out by going onto the domain controller and opening up the active directory users and computers snap in. Then right click the domain name and click properties. There is a field there that gived the pre 2000 domain name. Should be usable from NT.

But, I think what you'll need is a program like www.nat32.com
Depending on how your DSL connects, Windows can't share it by itself like it can Network connections.

I'm at the point now where I've read as much text about active directory as i can take. I seem to find that when the reference books provide samples of iddy biddy networks, with small diagrams, its hard to hammer home the main ideas and concepts. I used to work for a very large fortune 500 company, and would do anything to see a diagram, or organziational chart about how the domains, computes, users are set up.

Does anyone have any ideas or links that might help me find a real large organizational chart, that would bring all the AD reading to life. Or maybe someone that has set up a good size network, and maybe has a file with the information.
Thanks

For some reason Word 2010 Starter has an error pop up when I try to have it find my printer. It doesn't have a printer selected, so I go to it and click 'add printer' and an error comes up saying "Find Directory: Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable". The printer isn't even a year old and works fine with printing things off the internet, but I haven't been able to get it to work with Word. I contacted Lexmark and they had me download a driver from the website that was supposed to make it fine with a 64 bit OS or something, it wasn't giving me problems with printing off the internet but I figured it was worth a shot. Anyone have any idea what the problem is? It's connected to my computer with a USB cord.

Hello,

I'm having problems connecting a printer to my laptop. The printer was working but when my laptop went away for repair it did not work on its return.

The printer works on my macbook and my PC running Vista however it will not run on the laptop running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

I think it is something to do with the fact that my printer is on a network somewhere?? some how but I haven't a clue what to do.

When I try to add the printer using the add printer wizard it cannot locate the printer even though its switched on etc...

I haven't a clue why it won't work can someone try to help.

By the way I have tried downloading the drivers from the Epson website but when I press print it sends it to the print queue which then clears but no print!!!!

There are times when I open active directory to make a change to a users account that I run into this problem, I receive an error message stating the the server is not operational and can't connect. So then I go to the server room and it is working fine and I make the change there. What could be causing this, I have checked the mapping and that is fine.

A:Active Directory Question

From the machine that you're trying to access AD from, have you installed the latest Service Pack?

Also, are your DNS settings on this client machine properly configured?

Only other possible fix I came across was related to TCP/IP filtering (on the DC):

1. Right-click My Network Places on the domain controller which won't connect the Active Directory tool and press Properties.

2. Right-click the network connection that you use and press Properties.

3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), on the General tab, and press Properties.

4. Press the Advanced button.

5. Select the Options tab.

6. Select TCP/IP Filtering and press Properties.

7. Make sure that TCP Ports is configured for Permit All.

8. Press OK until the 'shutdown' message appears.

9. Shutdown and restart the domain controller.

I have a very small AD setup at home with an EON Storage NAS which is a build of OpenSolaris. I didn't do nearly as much testing up front as I wanted to, but it seemed to be a pretty solid OS. The problem I'm having now is the lack of OpenSolaris knowledge I have when trying to optimize performance.

Are there any NAS OSs out there that anyone recommends that:

Perform well with Windows
Have AD integrated permissions
Uses ZFS

I'm running a Cisco (not linksys) gigabit LAN that should be very capable of supporting full speeds. I'm currently getting very slow transfer rates between my current NAS and my windows 7 clients (~10MB/s sustained). That's from a windows 7x64 mirrored SATA disk to a 4 disk RAIDZ ZFS datastore via a gigabit LAN. I am also experiencing dropouts of the solaris box during transfers that I am starting to think are compatibility issues between windows and the OpenSolaris box.

I plan to use this NAS for my VMWare datastore (either via iSCSI or NFS) as well as a media and file server (pictures, SD/HD Video, music). Any recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We're relatively new to active directory so were surprised that a user - who was never set up on this win2000 computer but still a user in AD - could get into the files of this win2000 computer merely by logging into AD. In our environment we wish to basically authenticate to the local user list as well as AD. I have looked over info on AD users and computers as well as group policies but I haven't been able to find something addressing this. I have given thought to permission settings on computers in AD (no testing done yet) but maybe there is a better way. Your help would be appreciated.

I have 4 Bind DNS entries for my domain as follows:

Code:
_ldap._tcp.mydomain.com. SRV 0 0 389 server01.mydomain.com.
_kerberos._tcp.mydomain.com. SRV 0 0 88 server01.mydomain.com.
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.mydomain.com. SRV 0 0 389 server01.mydomain.com.
_kerberos._tcp.dc._msdcs.mydomain.com. SRV 0 0 88 server01.mydomain.com.

I want to make sure the other domain controllers are found and used. I've just added the same 4 records for each server and it will round robin them, but what about machines in different sites, will this be enough to use all the domain controllers correctly?

If I read correctly, when a domain controller receives a request, it will tell you to use a domain controller closer to you.

What I want to know is how does a client be efficient and use it's own domain controller first? Does it have to go through the discovery process of getting one of the dns records and querying that server which then refers it to a nearer domain controller?

I don't want to have to use Bind views for this as I'd have to specify only the local DC and this would lose me redundancy in case the local DC was rebooting or went down.

Any recommendations for proper DNS/site setup?

I'm in the process of creating a plan to eliminate unused computer and user objects within an Active Directory domain. Over time the AD was not managed correctly and now, we have a host of issues with our AD and are going to start running in to licensing issues soon. We thought a good place to start would be to get rid of any computer and user objects no longer in use.

We have a physical count of about 350 computers on the network, while we report from AD with having almost 500. There is no telling how many user accounts are lurking around either.

I have an idea of where to start, but at the same time I don't want to do anything too risky as we all know the ramifications of deleting a computer or user account in an AD accidentally.

Basically what I am after is the most painless way of finding out what computer and user objects are no longer in use so they may be deleted.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a win2k server that I used as a backup domain controller.
Can't remember exactly how I did it but used dcpromo and created some folders to store the db info on a raid aray with 2 drives.

Now my raid array is screwed up from someone swapping out drives and when the server tries to boot I get an error saying I need to reboot to directory services repair mode.

So since it can't access the db files on the raid array is that probably causing the prob or could it be a lot of things.

To get it working again, could I boot in safe mode and demote from domain controller to stand alone server or do I need to get my array with the db files repaired?

I am just trying to learn and playing around on this server so there is nothing important and can just re-install if faster but want to make sure I don't screw up the primary domain controller on the same network.

thanks!

IIRC, the correct way is to promote and demote the relevant server to and from Domain Controller status, ensuring that the AD is replicated between them first. Then you decommission the old server after a suitable period of parallel running.

I'd start again if I were you.

In an office I do work at, they are wanting to use MS Office 365, which is a cloud version of Office.

There are only 4-5 people who will use this, which is to share office documents and files, calendar and email.

There are two plans we are looking that will work... Both have 25GB storage space per user, calendar sharing, IM / PC to PC calling, Website hosting, etc. The big difference being Active Directory, is this really needed?

P1 = $6
E2 = $14

Other differences: P1 has 50user max vs. 50,000 for E2. (Both are more than enough) and live 24x7 support for E2.

What is Active Directory useful for in this area? Should I also post this in networking? That $8 difference in price is a big one if its for a feature we really don't need.

I currently have an AD domain using Server 2K3 (call it working domain) that has ~45 users and 12 member servers.

When I setup this domain, I was not given any recommendations for naming, so I made that decision myself. Now the powers that be would like for the root of the forest to be "company name.com" instead of what it is now.

I am in no way an expert in AD, as this domain is only my third build using AD.
I would like to know if there is a way to move a domain controller, that is currently the root server, into another domain as a child domain controller all while keeping the users intact. I would imagine that I would have to rejoin all the member servers to this new domain but I would like to keep the current setup of the working domain controller.

Also the working domain controller serves as WINS, RADIUS, DNS (internal), and DHCP. And several of the member servers are running SQL 2005, and Visual Source Safe.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure (under those conditions) you would have to demote the domain controller and re-promote it later.

Hello everyone!

I've got a Windows Server 2008 Foundation with Active Directory installed, a Cisco Catalyst switch, a FreeRADIUS Box and a Windows XP SP3.

The idea is to authenticate the Windows XP machine with the FreeRADIUS and then to log into the domain that is on the WinServ. How to perform machine-based authentication before user login? I managed to get certificate authentication but after the login to the machine. I also have AD working fine. I only need to integrate those two together. I read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929847 but it doesn't seem to work - when I specify machine auth, I receive an error that i cannot connect and just that - the debug output of the FreeRADIUS is blank - the Windows machine hasn't contacted it at all? How can I configure machine based authentication?

Hi,
I have a question that is probably pretty tough to answer... but here goes

I'm a junior at Boise State University, in Boise, Idaho. I'm taking a telecommunications class where we (7 students) are running an ISP over the summer. Our network consists currently of an authentication server, a backup server, two dns servers (linux), two dialup servers (16 modems), an email server, and other support machines. We're running WinNT4.0, SP5 and SP6 (depending on the machines), with I think a Win95/98 thrown in somewhere too, for a grand total of 22 Win-based machines. As a class project we are wanting to upgrade to Win2000 and Active Directory, and I am in charge of investigating the pros and cons (and future implementation, if agreed upon) of such a move. We have paying customers (its a real ISP - http://www.bsu.net) so we cannot afford to shut down for an extended period of time to perform the upgrade. If anyone has any advice, suggestions, web sites to visit, or encouragement , I would appreciate it. Thanks once again for your help!

This bus. has 3 DC & DHCP servers located in three different locations. Because of a hardware failure and other reasons, one server was not communicating to the other 2 servers. So the AD information got out of sync between that server's AD and the other 2 servers. Now all three servers are communicating to each other, but the AD on that one server would not replicate to the other two. Worse yet, the AD on that one server contains the most current information, users wise.

I am thinking of demoting the two unaffected servers and pushing the AD from the the one server to the other two servers, then promoting them back up as peer servers. But before I do, I thought I'd some thoughts and feedback from oters. So any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanksssssss.

Is there anyway to install Active Directory on Windows XP? I know you can set up windows to use IIS and turn it into a webserver but I wasn't sure about Active Directory. Thanks for anyone who can help.

How do I create a "Group Policy" that will take away "deletion" rights from a user?

A:Win2k3 Active Directory

Are you confusing GPO's and NTFS rights settings ?

You need to make the user member of enough groups to grant him the rights he needs to files. If you do not want the user to modify the files (deleting is part of modifying), then do not grant them the modify right.

If a specific user needs a specific deny right (not recommended) then make a new Security Group, grant this group the appropiate deny rights, and add the user to this group. Deny rights inheritance can be very tricky though.

Please be more specific as to what you are trying to accomplish.

Tribg to get my printer working from my Vista laptop through my XP base unit. I keep on getting the error message 'The active directory domain services is currently unavailable'

My laptop can see the printer, I have installed the drivers on the laptop, ticked all the boxes I can find and still no go.

How do I sort out this problem. Any ideas folks?

Thanks,

Andy

Hello guys,
I have a question related to AD groups and folders. There are user accounts that are disabled but they all have folders with personal files in a particular server. How can I see which are the folders of those disabled accounts. Is there a PowerShell script for that?

Thank you in advance!

A:Active Directory question

Are these folders that are set up as the users' home directories? Or are these folders that are on a server that happen to personally belong to specific users?

Hi, I am looking for a good book that comes with a CD which will contain modules and show you how to do the various things with active directory. Does anyone know of one? Oh, another good thing would be if the complete book was on the CD as well. I appreciate any positive help.
