Samsung 650GB External Hard Disk Not Being Detected

Q: Samsung 650GB External Hard Disk Not Being Detected

I am having a 650GB Samsung Hard Disk. Once I was transferring files from the hard disk to my PC and lights went out. Now when I connect my hard disk it is not being detected though it shows up in the Disk Management menu. I have tried formatting the HDD but it shows time remaining as 300 hours so I had to stop it midway. Is any other solution available for it...??? Please help...!!!

If you feel confident enough, Open it up and remove the hard drive from inside the enclosure and fit it directly in to your pc.

This will help determine if the hard drive or enclosure is to blame.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

A:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

Hello All,

I have a 250 GB external hard disk. I copied some movies onto it from a friend who now says that his drives were affected.

The hard disk ran but after I removed it and plugged it in again, it is not being detected by any computer. The blue color light glows and I can feel the motor running but it is simply not being read by any computer.

Can you please help me with some suggestion ?

I thank you in advance,

Kanwer

I tried to plug it in again, now it makes some strange noise as if some things it stuck and its scratching against something, its a start stop kind of noise. And then it makes the sound, which a USB device makes when it is plugged out !!!

I brought a Seagate Expansion Hard Disk about six months ago and have never had problem with it till now....
The problem is that my HD does not get detected if its plugged in after the windows startup.... In most cases it hangs my PC. The green light blinks so I'm positive that it's not a problem of the HD. The safely remove hardware icon also comes up. But the Autoplay menu doesn't show up and its icon wont be there in My Computer (that is, if I'm able to open My Computer. As I already stated, in most cases, the PC gets stuck).
I discovered that there are no issues if I keep it plugged in the USB port before the startup, but that is an inconvenience since I only have one free port . Ive tested with other pen drives and they work just fine. I even tried plugging it to a different port, but to no avail. It would really nice if you could help me with this....
Thnx in advance.....

A:External Hard Disk not being detected...

Try it on another machine. It sounds like the drive is having some problem. Run chkdsk /r on it in the other machine and check for bad sectors.

Hopefully, the data was backed up recently. External drives are the most unreliable of all storage media. If not, you better make a fresh backup in case something is wrong with the drive.

Hey,
I had my external hard disk connected to my laptop, and the wire accidentally came out for a second. But right away, it reconnected to my laptop. However, rather than working normally, my computer detected it as a new drive. And then I don't know what happened but it wouldn't be detected at all.
The light on the hard disk is on, so I know it's not an issue with the power. But I don't think it's being detected anywhere on my computer because no pop-up or anything appears to install a new hardware. Nor is the drive visible in My Computer.
I tried reinstalling but to no avail. I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard disk a number of times. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually I've got it to work. So kindly remove this thread.

Hi

I joined the forum as the activity seemed high and knowledgeable . Here is my problem.

I have an 500 Gb external hard drive (one of those slimeline jobs) and use it for backup and external storage fvrom my personal laptop.
It worked fine for ages and for a while I didn't use it (didn't need it).

When I went back to use it recently it wasn't detected by my laptop (Win 7) anymore. I can feel and hear it spinning but it is not being detected. Being somewhat technical I tried the following

- I went to my local PC hardware store and bought a new cable. They helpfully plugged it in there and it showed up straight away there.
- When I got home I plugged it into laptop and again not detected.
- I trawled around disk management and no luck in it being seen.
- We have a desktop PC in the house (running Vista) and when I plugged it in there it was seen find there as well.
- My other USB devices are not having any problem so as far as I know the ports are fine.

Any ideas as I am tearing the hair out of my head

Have you tried plugging it into a different usb port on your laptop? When it's plugged in, what does your device manager show...any yellow triangles or question marks? Is there any software/firmware to download?

I have had the same Toshiba external hard drive for years and have never had any problems plugging and using from any machine, mac or pc. I recently had to reformat my hard drives and re-install windows 7, and ever since I have been unable to access my external from this machine. It still works fine on my laptop, and when I plug it in to my tower, it still recognizes that "External USB 3.0" has been plugged in and downloads the drivers. However, the drive appears neither under my computer nor disk management, nor diskpart -> list volume. It does show up in my device manager as USB mass storage but uninstalling the drivers and plugging it back in does nothing. Is there anything I can try before moving all my files off and formatting the drive, and will that even help? Thanks for reading.

A:Seagate external hard disk not detected in front panel USB port

Well not exactly knowing what type of a computer we are talking about here, I can only say, that what your are reporting is completely normal. Most computers I've ever touched have passive styled USB ports on the front of the computer, and aggressive USB ports off the back that can handle just about anything you can hook up to it.

So stop trying to connect that external hard drive off the front, not enough power and not enough data exchange rates. I would recommend that if you have all your USB ports off the back of the computer taken, I would start thinking seriously about an "amplified" 4 port USB HUB. Remember the HUB your looking for has it's own power source, and does not relying on the computer at all for it's power.

The following one is a good one, a friend of mine got her's about a month ago and has not yet reported any problems.

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES

A:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

I am having this Hard Disk problem. My old Hard Disk (Samasung 500GB) (bought in 2010) started showing signs of corruption (like Windows doing chkdsk at every boot, and data getting lost). So I bought a NEW Hard Disk (Western Digital 1TB) last month (Sep 2016) to backup all the data from old one. I didn't have time to backup but wanted to use PC so I Clean Installed Windows 7 64bit on the New Western Digital 1TB and used it about a month without any problems.

A couple of days ago i decided to backup up the data. I reformatted the New Western Digital 1TB with Gparted and did a clean Windows 7 Install again. I connected the old Samsung 500GB to the motherboard and started copying the files to the new Western Digital 1TB.

Suddenly Windows showed me an error "Windows detected a hard disk problem" which makes sense because the Samsung 500GB is old and might be failing BUT the error is showing both of my Hard disk in the dialog box.

Is my new hard disk corrupt as well?
Why is Windows showing my new hard disk as failing?
Can Windows mistakenly show both hard disk in error?

Please help i am confused. sorry for a confusing question. i will answer anything required.

I have taken the screenshot of the error message, they are in attached files.
1)The 1st Screenshot shows both my Hard disk in the error box (OLD Samsung and NEW Western Digital WD)
2)The 2nd Screenshot shows only one of my Hard disk and its the new one (Western digital WD)

hi

1) I recently bought a samsung external hard (1500GB). The problem with it was that i couldn't use it on my playstation 3. i was told to format it to Fat32 (something like that), to which i used someone's link which was provided to me. After formatting it, it was still not working on my PS and to make things worse, it was now not detecting on my PC. I use Windows 7. Can someone please help with both aspects of the problem.

thank you

A:Samsung External hard drive

Install free Partition Wizard which will often detect a drive when Windows won't. If so make sure it has a letter, or else rightclick to Add Letter.

If it still doesn't show up in Windows or PS, delete the partition and create a new Primary one in the native (NTFS?) format of the external HD. Assign a letter. Do not mark Active.

If problems persist, rightclick the drive to Check File System and if necessary run Surface Scan.

Hi looking at your picture you cant rename it as C, D, E, F are already connected and in use
I have an external drive I sometimes connect and use and when I do it comes up as E, or F depending what I have connected at the time.
If you wanted to give it a higher letter you would have to disconnect one of the other drives put that one in then reconnect and see if that works

I know about the immediate 'loss' of disk space owing to the two different methods of measurement. 1Tb to 931Gb - it's annoying, but I'm used to it.

No, before a defrag by Fixbee I had 701Gb free, afterwards - in a matter of 2 hours - I had 537Gb. Obviously, I'm not going to use this product again, where a clean-up is obviosly a 'dirt up', but how do I undo the damage that it's caused - especially if it's not the only 'clean up' tool that might do this?

Hey guys,
So I have a samsung 1.5TB External Hard Drive that all of a sudden tells me it needs to be formatted. All I did prior to this happening was restart my PC, the same way I do every day.

I have 1TB of files, pictures, videos and more on that drive with no backups of it anywhere and I really need everything back.

I have read many threads similar to this one but others don't seem to have exactly the same problem that I do, in that when connected, my EHD constantly appears and then disappears in My Computer with a pop-up message.

This means that no matter which data/partition/HD recovery software I use, it doesn't allow me to select the EHD as it keeps disappearing from the list.

So basically, when it is plugged in, every 10 seconds or so it disappears and then reappears with this pop-up message:

"You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it.
Do you want to format it?"

Obviously I don't want to format it as that means I lose all my data.

Also, it uses USB 3.0 and is connected with a USB 3.0 cable into a USB 3.0 port.

I have tried:
- Changing the letter of the drive

In terms of recovery software, I have tried a few and another thing that makes it difficult for me to use (besides my EHD disappearing all the tim) is that I don't really know which options to choose.

For example, iCare Data Recovery has 4 sub-menus:
1. Lost Partition Recovery
2. Advanced file recovery
3. Deep Scan Recovery
4. Format Recovery

2. I also tried to boot using Ubuntu live CD but failed to find my HD on it.

Try the freezer trick. Place your hard drive in zip lock freezer bag to protect it from moisture and freeze it overnight (or a few hours at least). Quickly hook up the frozen hard drive and try to boot from it. If it works, be prepared to copy your important data as soon as possible before the hard drive warms up too much. This is not a permanent fix but it may work long enough to save your data.

Hey there guys, about six months ago I started receiving an error every few days on my computer on boot, and it was something along the lines of: 'pxe-rom: Check cable connection!'. To fix it I just used my Windows 7 install CD and it was fine, until whenever it'd happen again. Now, just about three days ago an error popped up that said 'Windows has detected a hard disk problem'. The hard drive is a 640 GB Toshiba MK6465GSXN. Anyway, after getting that message I quickly backed up all of my important documents and stuff onto an external HDD. It was also very slow, slower than my computer had ever been. So, I decided to do a clean install since scans with Malwarebytes and AVG detected nothing. And then, once it finished, it popped up the error message again?! I have noticed that the slowness has gone, but I'm not installing any programs in case it does fail. I am wondering that maybe the 'check cable connection' error was telling me something, but I didn't think anything of it. So, does it sound like I need to get a new hard drive?
EDIT: I bought a new hard drive, fixed!

A:Windows has detected a hard disk problem. Hard drive failing?

In many cases, that is Windows way of saying your hard drive is in imminent danger of failing. Of course there could be other problems, but windows will usually detect it first. A tutorial that may help is simple to use, but may take a while. Disk Check I would also get the Manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic program to check the drive. You were wise to back up all of your personal information.

I have been researching a solution non stop and today when i plugged it in once again something worst happened, this time I see a External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized in Disk Management.

Can someone please help?

The irony... we get an external drive to protect our data and not loose it and then this happens

Try this to salvage what you can from it: Download MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition - MajorGeeks
Do that before any attempts to repair.
If nothing, portable drives are even less reliable than stationary ones and it's interfaces are prone to malfunction.

I recently purchased a Samsung 2.5" 500GB USB external hard disk on eBay, and received it just this morning. After a bit of testing I decided I wanted to separate it into two partitions (one for data and one for my Wii games). When I tried to do that using Windows XP's disk manager, it went formatted 99% then returned a plain "Format did not complete successfully", with no additional info. Then the hard drive just disappeared. Windows explorer will not detect it (it will make the "USB device connected/disconnected" noises upon plugging it in or unplugging it from the computer however), and neither will the disk manager, which means I can't simply delete the partition and format again. The blue LED indicating connection between the drive and the computer does blink when I plug the drive in, and then it remains static until I unplug it.

Any help is really really appreciated. I'll gladly provide additional information to the best of my knowledge.

The 32-gigabyte (GB) NAND flash-based solid state disk (SSD) can upload and download data quickly and quietly as it uses instantly-accessible static NAND flash memory instead of the rotating discs found in hard drives.

SSD weighs only half as much as a hard drive, reads data three times faster and writes data 1,5 times quicker, it said.

It consumes a mere five percent of the electricity needed to power a hard disk drive and operates silently as it requires no motor or any other noise-making parts.

A:Samsung develops drive to replace hard disk

Awesome. Solid-state memory needs to replace ferromagnetic plates of glass. Methinks this step in technology is long overdue.

You can't fix a failing hard-drive, I would suggest backup all your important files and data, and then run some hard-drive diagnostics to assess the situation better:

Run some hard-drive diagnostics and follow these steps:Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Find your hard-drive manufacturer and run their tests.

I suspect that my 640 GB hard disk (from 2008) is nearing the end of its life and would like to plan for a replacement. There does not appear to be much if any chance to replace such a SCSI disk any more. What is the best type of disk to replace it, and does it need a new controller?I run Vista (original OS) and Windows 7 (new) in a dual boot configuration. It has currently three volumes, a Vista C: drive (c.300 GB), a Windows 7 C: drive (c.300 GB) and the HP "FACTORY_IMAGE" drive 15 GB

The Background :
I built my new P4(3GHz) System in Dec 04. I used the same old 80Gb HDD

The Problem :
Apparantly the HDD survived all that (although the plastic around the bus

It was working fine. But now after taking a 4 weeks gap to cool things down

The Bios & XP Device manager shows the HDD, U can feel it working, but it

I will enclose here my complaint which I send to motherboard maker Gigabyte, regarding USB external hard disk problem. Please read it and if anybody knows how to solve this, thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

This could be any issue causing your problem , software , usb drive may have errors on it / or ?
Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.

I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.

Options:
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition - http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-windows-7-system.html
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] - https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.

Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.

All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

Hello,

I have run into a problem that has been causing me quite a bit of headache as of late. A week ago, my WD Elements External Hard Disk is not displaying under hard disk drives, but does display under Devices and Printers. This is what it shows under computer management:

I have tried to initialize the disk using MBR and GPT options but failed receiving I/O Disk Error.

Please help, thank you.

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

A:USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

Thanks

A:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

I have a Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 160GB hard drive. It came in an external casing which became tatty and so I bought a new one. Well the new enclosure didnt work and so I have only just got a new one after about 11 months.
The problem I now have is that my computer will not recognise it. I'm running on Windows XP Home, and the hard drive did work on there before I put it in the new enclosure. I have tried the jumpper settings suggested by Maxtor and it doesn't work. The only way I can get the computer to show it is by putting the jumppers on Cap Limit, then it shows a 31.50GB hard drive. I can not format the drive, I have too many things on there that can not be replaced.

If anyone can help me at all, then please I would be very very greatful.

Mei.

A:External Hard Drive Not Detected

What types of interface are you using to connect computer / external drive?

What interface options drive and its enclosure?

"Computer doesn' recognize it" also leaves a gap of unanswered questions including at which point is it not recognized?

Is it recognized by Devmgr? Are attachining via USB or other? Cause couldn't even ask what "not recognized means" until i know what should be expected.

In generalization:
- Recognized in devmgr (if that simply mean "i can see it listed under Disks, so yes." There can be still further criteria required before you could say "yes" for DevMgr so that answer is still an am not sure)

Do you see it at all in Explorer? Or do you see it but with no drive letter assigned?

Same for Disk Managment, it';s drive letter shown there? does it appear as a disk there?

So please translate "not recognized"

Hi guys,

My computer cannot detect my 250GB external hard drive and I'm having a hard time fixing this issue, and I've been searching for the problem to be fixed in the internet, unfortunately nothing was found. Before this issue happened, there was no problem, it was working fine until I did something with the registry-cleaning and such. However, my external hard drive can be detected by other computers, and I don't know why my computer can't detect it.

Does anyone of you know what the cause of this problem? I'd be glad if you can help with this problem.

Hi Frankier77,

I understand that you have checked this harddrive on a different system and it worked fine. As you said issue occurred after you made changes on the system so you can try doing a system restore:

Hi,
I have been using my Iomega HDD for a while now and have never had any problems before today.
It worked fine when connected to my Acer Netbook running windows 7 starter 32 bit. I connected to a friends laptop and it said to access it it must be formatted, so i bought it home and it said the same thing, to access it must be formatted.
I have attempted to format it numerous times and each time it says windows is unable to complete the format..
I disconnected it (safely ) and restarted the computer before connecting it again and now it is not being detected.
Any solution ideas would be greatly appreciated
Thankyou

Now it's not being detected by my Acer Netbook.. The light on the hard drive is on.. but nothing is happening on computer..
not being detrected in Disk Management either..

I have a western digital mybook (WD5000C032-002) that for some reason is not being detected by Windows 7 RC. It is a USB connection straight from the mybook to one of the motherboard's usb ports. All my device drivers are up-to-date. If I go into "Devices and Printers" and click on "Add a device"... I get a window that says "Searching for devices... Make sure your device is discoverable." It stayed on this screen for up to 1/2 hour and then I gave up and clicked Cancel. Doing this this shouldn't be necessary anyway, because as soon as I plug in the mybook it should be detected automatically, if I'm not mistaken. By the way, I can confirm that this mybook is detected by an XP machine.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

wondering if you are connecting it via usb 2.0 port. Tho technically it SHOULD still find the drive, i have noticed win7 reporting fits here if anything like a hdd is not plugged into a 2.0 port here. Most of mine are 2.0, all but one set, and when the 2.0 gets filled up at times, this is my choice, and what i have seen.

Not much to really offer you here, i dont think THIS SHOULD be a problem, and it might not be. I just notice 7 complaining alot on 2.0 use or nonuse of actually.

Do any other usb devices work, like a printer or ipod etc?

I have an 1T external drive plugged into esata port. It used to work and now it doesn't? When I boot up bios correctly identifies the drive as a seagate sata drive. When I look at device manager is says its a seagate SCSI drive and therefore the system doesn't recognize it at all? In device manager under drive properties it say " this device is working properly" I checked in disk management and the drive is there and on line but because it sees it as a SCSI drive and not sata its not found by any software??? I think its something to do with the Windows sp1 update as it was working fine. I also changed external drives....no difference......Heeeeeeelp!

Hi ronstitt.

You said that the hard drive shows up in Disk Management as online, but is the partition on the hard drive assigned a drive letter? That's caught me out in the past.

Try locating the hard drive in Disk Management again, right click the partition, and press "Change Drive Letter and Paths...". In the window that appears, check that there is a letter in the box. If not, press "Add...", and choose one.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi ,
I have this Iomega 500GB external USB hard drive it worked perfectly until I visited India. I took this to India and i tried to hook it up to my laptop it was not detected no power light nothing. I though may be because of 230v input, But power adapter does support input 120 - 230 v. Anyways it didnt work so I just removed it and thought will check it once i'm back here in NYC. After coming back I'm trying and it is same. No light and its not detected on my XP laptop. what went wrong?
I thought of adapter? But power adapter is working, I connected to another device (digital frame) and shows power. I tried to connect to another laptop its same result
It worked flawlessly when i connected last time. I think that enclosure is gone or is it that Hard drive it self is gone? Can someone experienced throw some light?

Gary

Hi,

You didn't specifically mention it, but can we assume you also tried a different USB port on the PC running Professional? Are you sure its the USB2 and not USB3 port?

Do both the laptop and PC run 32 bit or 64 bit?

Do you know the make and model of the external HDD?

Okay, the title's only the start, honestly. I'm going to start from the beginning, because i've had a LOT of related problems. So first of all, i left my lenovo y50 with windows 10 running under a bunch of blankets (because i'm an idiot). after that, booting up the computer would result in an error message reading "EFI Network 0 for ipv4 (string of numbers) boot failed". the computer would very rarely boot up sucessfully at first, but would bluescreen before long. After a couple days it would no longer boot sucessfully. I assumed that it was a hard drive issue, so i bought a USB external hard drive(which i've never used before). It was a 1tb trancend storejet. I left the burnt- out hard drive inside the computer. Plugging in the new drive originally gave me an error that no OS was detected (which is supposed to happen? I'm not sure) restarting actually got the computer running for at least an hour until it bluescreened with "SYSTEM_STORE_EXCEPTION" After that, i had the same problems as before, and BIOS didn't read a hard drive. What is my problem and how can i fix it?

Is that an old drive... We have discovered a lot of difficulties of the WD drives in external case being recognized as they age... Their life expectancy appears to be very short... too often, between one and two years.

External Hard drive (of 2 TB) was connected to my Laptop (Running Windows 7 Home Premium).

System was shut down abruptly (I guess something was being read/write from the external HDD). I tried restarting (with the external HDD connected) and the system would not proceed from the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen. As soon as I remove the external HDD cable the system shut downs and restarts. When the Operating system is up, I connect the external HDD but cannot see the external HDD drive.

I did a restart again, but no luck.

When I open 'Disk Management' it asks me to Initialize the drive. I am not willing to loose the data on it. (data is approx of 600 GB).

Files that I have in are .vmdk images, .iso files & Executable files. There are hardly any media/photo files. (I am concerned about the executable's.)

I have attached screenshot from 'Disk Management' view.

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

A:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

I have a new 320GB Iomega portable/external USB2 hard drive, purchased some time ago as a spare, but - until now - not used. So it has no data on it other than whatever might have been on it from the factory.
The fundamental problem is that when plugged in, it does not show up as a drive in the "My Computer" screen. I have plugged it in to different USB ports, and in two separate laptops, one WinXP (yes yes, I know....) and one Win7. The power light on the drive illuminates, and the case vibrates/hums very slightly which suggests that the hard drive is spinning. But it simply doesn't appear as a drive. There are some clues (which I hope forum experts may be able to interpret). See details below. First, I tried to see if there was a hardware problem:
1) I checked the connecting USB cable, by using another different and known-good cable. Same problem: drive not visible. Which suggests the original USB cable is OK.
2) To check if there was a fault in the actual Iomega PCB inside the casing, I opened the case, disconnected and removed the hard drive (it's made by Seagate), and installed it in another, spare, hard drive caddy which I happened to have - and which has its own known-good USB PCB interface. Plugged this into my laptop(s). Still no drive visible or listed in "My Computer" - which suggests that the original Iomega PCB USB interface is not the problem.
So.... is the hard drive dead? It seems to spin OK. Or is there a software issue, or something else? Incidentally all my... Read more

Hello,

I have windows 7 32 bit on a toshiba laptop. I am posting becuase this is a strange situation. I have a goflex exteral terrabyte. The computer recognizes it, lists it in the device manager and claims that it is working properly. However, I can't access it, I can't save anything to it, or get anything from it, or even see the files on it.

Now, I have a mac and a pc, the drive said it could be used on both. So i first used it on the mac (and it works perfectly) but not on the pc. It there a share error maybe?

Any help would be appreciated. I am an editor and I was hoping to be able to easily move from my computer (mac) to my clients (pc).

Thank You for any help or opinions you can give.

A:External Hard Drive Detected but not Accessible

Hi Misti,

The first use of the drive was on the Mac, is that correct? And there is no problem on the Mac - right?
i really don't have an answer, but I've had issues with my own ext HD. The original system I connected it to was XP, then a Vista machine. the HD would request me to chkdsk every time I plugged it in. Then I could see the files and on some volumes access them. Other volumes were set as read-only. After some time just being attached, the HD would mark itself offline.

It will help if you can post a full screen snapshot of Disk Managment.

Thanks,

Hey

My friends laptop is no longer booting, and I need to take the data off the hard drive before a reformat. My plan was to connect the hard drive to my laptop using an enclosure so I could copy the data over, reformat, then copy back.

However, when I connected the hard drive to my laptop via the enclosure, my laptop didn't show it as an additional drive. A light is on the hard drive enclosure, so I know there's power to it, and my laptop installs the drivers for both the hard drive and enclosure, so I know the laptop is properly connected

Like I said though, I'm not getting any option to actually use it as an additional drive

So what am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

Any and all help would be massively appreciated

PS. My operating system is Vista

i have a external hard drive that was working fine until a couple of days ago, im not sure exactly when it stopped working but the only thing i can think of is that the other day i was transferring a film to my laptop until it decided it couldn't take it any more and crashed, then i unplugged the external hard drive at the USB and shut down my computer manually

now when i plug in the hard drive it is detected in 'device manager' and 'disk management' and i am also able to safely remove the drive but it does not show in 'my computer' (or whatever it is that the vista equivalent is called)

also in 'disk management' it appears as 'Disk 1' and says that it is not initialized, however if i right click and i choose to initialize it then an error message comes up saying 'incorrect function'

i have tried different ports, un-installing and re-installing drivers, using a different computer, i cant change or even see a drive letter and after searching for many many hours through different posts and threads and trying them all im still stuck

if anyone can help me to save my data, or even just get the hard drive working again i would be extremely grateful

Allready scanned for some kind of worm with a couple of antiviruses. Also used "Flash disinfector" but my external disk keeps being recognized as a 2gb flash drive in "My computer" and i cannot access any of my files.I also tried it on a second PC and it did the same thing.
I use windows xp pro,i can see its true capacity in the System tools and i also changed the letter of the disk but no luck.Been trying to solve this for many hours but the only thing that i managed to do is for the disk icon to be shown now as disk and not as a removable flash disk but still in "My computer" it is shown as a 2gb thing instead of 600gb and with no access to my files.

Hi, I joined these forums hoping specifically that I would find the solution to this issue with my computer and the hard drive.

I recently purchased an Iomega 1TB external hard drive to back up my files from my Laptop (Toshiba satellite) because it has been constantly showing hard drive failure warnings and messages telling me to back up my files. When I connected the hard drive the first time, it worked fine and I was able to access it, but didn't use it for anything at the time. The next time I used it, however, the usual "New device" sound didn't play and the hard drive didn't show up in the file browser. I then looked up the issue to find that it is a common problem where the device hasn't been assigned a drive letter. I went to the Disk Manager to fix the issue but the device was not in the list of connected devices. I have searched for the problem several times and have had no luck in finding the solution. The problem seems to be with my computer because it works fine on my brother's computer and has no issues.

Additionally, I have been having problems with Windows Update being stuck on "Downloading 0%" and have had to use the system restore several times when getting stuck on an update message on startup. I think that this may be the cause of the problem (and yes, I have turned on the hard drive).

Any help is appreciated, and I hope to get this issue resolved so I can back up my files.

A:External hard drive not detected when connected to PC

Hey Jim101.

Sounds like the USB ports are somehow unable to recognize the drive properly. I would suggest connecting a flash drive to the same USB port and see if it gets recognized properly. If it does, try plugging the external hdd again.

Have you tried different USB ports? Just a thought.

Let me know how it turns out.

Gday

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

Hi,
I own a HP Pavilion dv1000, the problem is the hard disk is getting detected in the BIOS but at the boot menu screen fades blank and also the hard disk activity led is not glowing there after(the hard disk activity led flashes when only when power is turned on/off and not at any other instance.).

Its a SATA disc drive.
I bought a SATA BOX and tried connecting it to my other laptop but the drive is not getting detected , though the LED on the SATA BOX connected to hard disk is green (assuming green signifies working).

I also used USBDeview to see if it can detect the drive connected on the USB but it wasn't detected .

If it can be of any help here are few specifications:

Capacity : 80GB
SN : 5PK0TZGS
Model : ST98823AS
PN : 9W3183-021
FW : 3.05

Vol : +5v , 0.48 A

I have some very important data which wasn't backed up on it , any comments would be of immense help.

A:Hard disk not getting detected

Determine the brand name of the drive. Download the drive manufacturer's testing utility, preferably a utility that runs from a bootable CD. Place the drive back into its original computer. Turn the computer on and place the bootable test CD into the computer's CD drive and restart the computer again. Run the tests and let us know your result.

Hi,

I have a 250GB Toshiba laptop hard disk that is not being detected by anything. Toshiba shipped my laptop with two partitions; the first is 1.5GB primary partition, and the other is just a logical one. I inadvertently deleted (not formatted, deleted!) the primary partition while trying to install Windows 7, and now whenever the computer starts up, the hard disk's light is constantly on, but nothing else happens on screen (just blank). Setup for Windows 98SE, 2000, XP and 7 can't see it. Also, I tried HDD Regenerator, but nothing happens at startup even though the light is constantly on.

If I try to simply connect that drive (as an external USB one), then Windows 7 detects that something is connected, but hangs up on trying to install its drivers.

I know that I messed up the hard drive because of a stupid mistake, but is there anyway to retrieve the info from the logical partition? Is there anything that can recreate a primary partition?

Thanks.

We've found by experience that people who are careless and sloppy writers are usually also careless and sloppy at thinking and coding (often enough to bet on, anyway). Answering questions for careless and sloppy thinkers is not rewarding; we'd rather spend our time elsewhere.

So expressing your question clearly and well is important. If you can't be bothered to do that, we can't be bothered to pay attention. Spend the extra effort to polish your language. It doesn't have to be stiff or formal — in fact, hacker culture values informal, slangy and humorous language used with precision. Hi! I am new to Techspot and this is my first post.
I have a PC which has stopped detecting the hard drive and will not even boot. The dard disk is Seagate ST340810A 40GB. I have tried swapping cables and power supplies but to no avail. Earlier it was occasionally giving similar problem but used to work fine when the cable connections were re made. I have data on the drive which needs to be recovered.
The local vendor tells me that a new 'logic card' will need to be put in as the old one has gone kaput. He also says that the data can be recovered but is charging a fortune, and that some of the data may be lost or corrupt. He is not ready to sell the 'logic card' to me.
Being not so knowledgable in this area, please advise how should I proceed to make the drive back into working status.

A:Hard disk not being detected

You will not be able to recover ANY data if you have a hardware malfunction without replacing the faulty part. Even so, your data still may be non-recoverable. ALWAYS backup important data to more than one device.
You can try using an IDE to USB adapter, but if the controller board on the hard drive is toast, it's dead.

I needed help badly!

A computer here in the office suddenly cannot boot. Error shows that Boot disk failed. At first I thought the hard disk crashed. So I take out the hard disk and put it in my cpu as slave just to make sure the hard disk really crashed. But it works. The hard disk is fine.

So I take it back to its cpu but the error still shows. I take out the IDE Cable connected in the CD Rom but the problem still remains. It says there are no Primary Master and Slave. I check the CMOS but it was configured to automatically detect the hard disk.

What shall I do?

I have a 500GB Hard Disk. When i formatted it once, I got a warning telling that do not install the OS in this drive or you might loose data. But I had to install it there. No problem occurred after that for a few days, but one day the computer just hanged at start up.

Problem:

First time when I power on the system and start the computer, the hard disk is read in the boot menu but it hangs at Starting Windows. Without switching off main supply, when I restart the computer, the hard disk is not read under the boot menu.

When I plug the same hard disk in a later version of mother board i.e in another computer, each time on Starting Windows I get a Blue Screen. The problem is corrupt OS according to the code that appeared on the Blue Screen.

How to retrieve the data from the hard disk?
Please HELP !

A:Hard Disk not detected

First, you cant install the problem hard drive in another computer and expect it to start Windows. The Windows installation is customized to the PC it was installed on.

You can, however, connect the hard drive as a second drive on another PC already running Windows (or other OS) and look at the files inside. If you can see the files you can copy them to a backup disk to recover them.

As for the original problem, is the problem hard disk recognized as a boot device in BIOS when you start the computer from the OFF condition?

A:Toshiba external USB hard drive not detected in any laptop

Go under the Device Manager and uninstall all the USB Controllers then reboot your PC don't connect the 1 TB just yet. Make sure nothing is connect to those ports like a keyboard or mouse otherwise they'll lockup. Once rebooted Windows will rebuild the table for USB Controllers. Now you should be all set. Unless you have some sort of conflict with IRQ or Registry setting. There is a free app called USBDVIEW what you would do is disconnect from all non-disconnected USB devices that are stored on the PC these settings can cause all sort of issues.

My external hard drive (WD Passport 0748) can be detected, but doesn't show up in My Computer.
I tried everything I saw on the internet but to no avail. I need these files so badly! Help

It shows up in my Device Manager. Right clicked it and uninstalled it, plugged it back. It gets detected (again) but still, it doesnt show up in My Computer.

I went to Disk Management. It's unknown, not initialized and unallocated with black line on top. What does that mean? (See jpg 1)

It shows up in Devices and Printers but it has a yellow triangle mark on it with "!". (See jpg 2) So I click troubleshoot. It says "The driver for WD SES Device USB Device is not installed. Install the latest driver for the device." Then I click "Apply this fix." Then it says "WD SES Device USB Device doesn't have a driver. Not fixed" (See jpg 3).

I plugged my external hard drive to my other computer. I did the same thing, but still it didn't work. It gets detected but won't show up in My Computer.

Hi there,

I have a Western Digital external hard drive that is not detected by Windows anymore. When I plug it in, the hard drive does not show up on "My Computer" but it does show up on Disk Management :

I have read on the internet that this issue is usually caused by a corrupted sector or the MBR that's corrupted.

I tried TestDiskt but unfortunately when it asks me to choose the hard drive i want to select, my external hard drive doesnt show up on the list.

The only hdd that i see on TestDisk is my internal hard drive.

Every software that i tried to recover data with can't detect my external hard drive, that is why I now ask for your help.

Is there anyway I can recover the data or, even better, get my hard drive to work again.

I lost it's real power and USB cable, but I have been using substitutes that have been working fine and have been for the whole of this year. The light on it lights up half way when it's plugged in (and it's visible at the moment with it plugged in) and then flashes very brightly when connecting, and remains solid when connected. I haven't used it in a couple of weeks and I think it might have magnets in it because when its working sometimes I swivel it around and it has water in it (it doesn't.) I had it under a light-medium tin that was aluminum, but it was easily half the hard-drives weight. When I plugged it in to power everything was fine, then I put the USB in, it flashed, but then my computer didn't let it through? Now whenever I try to plug it into any of the 3 jacks I have, I doesn't even flash. Can somebody help?!

First of all I am sorry of this has been answered somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it and I really need a solution.

My desktop does not detect and external hard drive that do not come with their own power supply. I have many externals that also plug into the wall and they are working fine; but whenever it is an external without a plug, i.e. the portable ones they are never found.

They do not show up in Computer Management, so it is not because I did not assign a letter to the drive.

I have tried various things, but I don't know what I should be testing for or looking for.
These externals all work on other laptops and other desktops perfectly fine so it is not the externals. When they are plugged into my desktop, they light up normally like they should, but the desktop never detects them. I have tried these externals with the different USB cable I have on hand, but nothing seems to work. It doesn't matter which USB port I plug the device in, it still gives me no response.

I am running a i7 860 on a ASUS P7P55D Pro.
If anyone has any information or a ideas please let me know.

Thanks.

A:External Hard Drives without their own Power Supply are not detected.

This is a rather common, but sporadic, problem. The issue, I believe, is that the USB ports on the problem PC are not putting out the specified power to run the drive. This is a problem typically seen in laptops.

IIRC, USB 2.0 specifications require the supply of 2.5 watts of power over a maximum of 5 meters at 5 volts (0.5 Amps). If you are ambitious you could test for the correct specs with a good multimeter.

The other possibility is that the problem external drive is requiring more power than is supplied by the USB specifications. This is not likely in your case because the drive works on other PCs.

One work-around, in either case, would be to used a powered USB port for that PC.

Hi,

I have had an Iomega external hard for a year now and it used to work perfectly, until suddenly, my computer (Mac) won't detect it anymore.

When I turn it on, the blue light comes on and I can hear the disk spinning inside, but there is no trace of any external device connected to my mac. I've connected through USB and Firewire with no success. Going to disk utility, only my internal hard drive appears.

It simply just stopped showing up on my computer. Does anybody have any advice to get my hard drive working again?

A:Iomega External Hard Drive stopped being detected

Try a different usb & firewire port physically on your mac & try a different cable. If no dice try it on a different mac or even on a PC, see if the other computer detects it. many times w/ external hard drives the enclosure fails but the drive is ok. worse case scenario the enclosure is bad & you can remove drive to put in another enclosure, or the whole thing could be hosed. try this, post back. thanks!

Hey there, I have been using the same external enclosure for quite a few months now with no problems at all. I bought a new hard drive the other day (Western Digital SATA 80GB WD800JD), connected it to my PC like a normal HDD, and formatted it to NTFS using EASEUS Partition Master 6.1.1 Professional. I have scanned it for bad sectors via Partition Master, and ran chkdsk; all concluding with no errors.

I connected the HDD to the enclosure like normal, and it worked for a few times. Then last night I tried it and it didn't work. I was originally plugging it into the USB port located near the power button, so I tried using a USB port on the panel round the back, which kind of worked. It said it had to be formatted, so I tried formatting it but an error arose reading "The request could not be performed because of an i/o device error". I switched the enclosure off, waiting a few seconds, then back on again. The light was still on, and it seemed the same appearance-wise, but now it's not being detected in any USB ports on my PC. The USB connect "babum" sound plays, but nothing happens. It no longer shows up in any partition software and in Computer. Also, in Device Manager, it's listed under Disk Drives as 'USB Device', with its status being "This device is working properly."

I ran CHKDSK. At the beginning, it gave me the following message: "Warning! F parameter not specified. Running CHKDSK in read-only mode." It claimed to fix some things at the end of step 2, but it didn't help.

Device Manager thinks that the device is running properly.

I rebooted the machine but that didn't help either.

I ran chkdsk/f as suggested for one of the similar problems in another thread, but for that lucky guy, the drive was visible in windows exploreer.

Any ideas?

Pls pls help me a it has all my important data in it.

A:External Hard Drive issue cannot stay detected

Hi kufr, noted on the difficulty you're facing on the WD external hard disk. I strongly recommend you to try out the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics test first for the drive which might help to detect any errors on the drive itself. Here is the link for the test accordingly.

How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows

Hope it helps.
