Q: Something Deciding Safe Files Are Infected...

(See attached)

My Firefox download progress bar has decided to take a dislike to from the malware forum.
How can I sort this out please? So sick of software thinking it's being 'useful' !

A: Something Deciding Safe Files Are Infected...

That could be Firefox' baked-in Google Safe Browsing/Phishing Protection (or w/e its called now), see if you can find a likely pref from this page to add/modify from about:config:

I recently was infected by .scr virus from csgolounge, where a user posted a link to a knife "screenshot". I then clicked on the link assuming it was safe and it downloaded a .scr & ran it. It then started to control my mouse and attempted to access my gmail accounts for steam, to trade off my skins. Luckily my gmail was protected and stopped the person (russian ofc) from accessing my account. It did however get my passwords (quickly changed) and managed to send a trade offer to another account. However I had steam email confirmation security so nothing was taken. Here are the steps I took:
1. Deleted the .scr file
2. Changed passwords
3. Restarted (was still active, moving my mouse, typing etc.)
5. Turned my computer off, turned off my internet connection.
6. Restarted (without internet), no sign of it being active.
7. Ran antivirus (windows defender, full scan, didn't find anything)
9. Did a system restore
Even after these steps I'm still unsure whether i'm totally safe. It had a keylogger so i don't want to type any passwords etc. I don't know if it has infected any registry stuff or whether it is still present (defender didn't find anything).
Can anybody help me?
BTW I live in Australia (UTC/GMT +9:30), so I might be quite late with replies (1am here atm) etc.

Safe Transactions with Infected PCs (2 web pages).

This is an interesting technology making its way to market. It is launching to 6 million customers of an undisclosed online broker in the near future.

The method is that it uses a rootkit to burrow into your OS - Windows only for now on IE and Firefox browsers, but they are working on Linux, Mac and Safari browser versions.

I am not sure that they can guarantee that their rootkit burrows deeper than any malware based rootkit (in order to provide the deepest protection as they seem to make in their claim).

On my WinXP Pro SP2 I used a free anti-keylogger that drilled into the system ahead of everything else (services) so that it was the first to execute before any system services. If they could do it - my assertion is that the malware authors can also - and the anti-keylogger was so proficient that I remember one member did not like it being so low-level and uninstalled it - but, it did its job very well.

The way I confirmed that the anti-keylogger was first to execute was a tool from Microsoft Technet SysInternals toolset here that listed the order of execution at boot time of system services.

As with any software, try it at your own risk - and if you do - please post your review in this thread.

If my PC was infected, I wouldn't even risk it. I'd be using extremely personal details and I'd only enter them on a PC I know is clean.

I've got a gig fixing a friend of a friend's laptop. It essentially won't boot. The laptop itself is like, God probably like 10 years old! Most likely has some form of virus or malware on it. (I'm ashamed to say my friends think they either "don't need AV," or "I can't afford [free] AV." )

Anyway, I was thinking to hot swap the hd into my rig, and scan it.
I'm running:
-full Webroot Internet Security Suite
-full Norton 360
-free Avast!
-free Avira

Obviously I won't be trying to boot from this drive until everything says it's ok. I did this last week without even thinking twice, with a different definitely-known-to-be-infected drive, and no real-time shields picked up anything. But really, how safe is this? Is it even possible for anything to try to start messing with me?

A:Hot-swapping infected hd: Is it safe?

FWIW: you might want to use one of those small <$20 external USB drive connectors that support the laptops drive and then run malware bytes and your AV against it.

I have done this and cleaned up drives without a lot of aggrivation.

I'm building a pc from scratch for gaming and Photoshop and I need to decide between rather to order the I7-3770K from a friend from the U.S in late May with a discount that he has from Intel for just 169$+shipping. Or wait for my uncle to arrive from China in July and he can bring me I7-4770K or i5-4670K (they will probably be corresponding price). So I need to decide between i5-4670K (227$) and i7-3770K.(169$)
Will the i5-4670K be better then i7-3770K? What do you recommend to buy?
What about the Z78 boards and new chipset will they be better then the current?
In June there will be cheap mobos or only hi-end?

A:Help deciding which CPU to buy

The 3770K should still be betther than the unreleased i5 part. However, that price you're getting it at ($169??) seems too good to be true. You might be getting ripped off.

If you can wait, I'd wait until Haswell is launched to see what happens.

I have a Radeon HD 5450 "silent" card in my build at the moment and my WEI is pathetic an d looks to be a graphics hold up.

Now I am not graphic savvy and have an idea that Radeon is better than NVidia or so my son tells me they are but am not planning on a lot of gaming just the usual flight / submarine sims and don't want to go spending squillions on a card that I would not be getting the use out of except for what I said and perhaps enhancing the screen.

Perhaps if I had a reasonable one I could be tempted into some of that fancy graphic stuff for sigs etc

So what brand and what sort of specs would I be looking for please?

A:Deciding on a GPU

What's your budget? Maybe list a high and low dollar amount so we have a range.

Ati is rolling out their 7xxx series and there are already some good deals available for the 6xxx series cards. Maximum PC lists my card (the 6870) as the best budget card on their list.

Maximum PC | XFX Radeon HD 6870 Review

(Ignore the price they have listed. I paid about $220 a year ago and with rebate they are now in the $170 range and still falling.) - XFX Double D HD-687A-ZDFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

If you want to compare it to pricier stuff, here is the whole works:

Best of the Best - Maximum PC-approved hardware and components for your rig building needs | Maximum PC

A list of of the exact games you'll be playing could help further fine-tune recommendations.

I should also mention that with the ongoing video card war still hot, Nvidia has some good deals, too.

I'm in the market for a new computer and I'm seeking some advice to help me decide between 2 good deals I've come across. Here's what I'm looking at:

AMD Athlon II 635 (2.9GHz) Quad-Core, 6GB DDR3, 1TB SATA II Hard Drive (5400RPM), Integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics

AMD Phenom II 945 (3.0GHz) Quad-Core, 8GB Memory DDR2, 1TB SATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM), Integrated ATI Radeon HD 3100 graphics

Both systems are $600, run Windows 7 Home Premium, and seem otherwise pretty similar, I'm already planning on adding a graphics card and better power supply.

So it's pretty clear both have pros and cons. Athlon II 635 vs Phenom II 945, 6GB DDR3 vs 8GB DDR2, 5400rpm vs 7200rpm drive, and the integrated graphics cards (from what I can tell the 3100 has been around for a long time, too long?)

Thanks for any advice, or even better finds for $600.

A:Need help deciding

1) I take it then you have no interest in building your own system?

2) what will you use it for?
3) The DDR2 alone eliminates that one

Here lies my dilemma
On one hand if I use XP I get 5.1 Surround sound when listening to online radio or watching dvd's.

On the other hand I love the speed of vista and the overall way it works, it is very nice operating system but when I use 5.1 mode I get the weirdest sound on xfi and a microphone that echo's inside games that use voip and other sound recording/morphing apps.

To better explain this I have an altec lansing 251B 5.1 surround sound setup which sounds fantastic when played thru XP x86 when combined with my XFI extreme music. When I use this great audio setup in vista I sometimes am lucky to get full 5.1 surround sound in certain apps and movies or radio stations.

Whats weird about this is, my audio normally comes out of my center and my left channels which produces a roll your eyes upsetting left fade effect.

I just dumped vista and installed XP, but I really want to use vista however I don't understand why or even how to fix 5.1 with XFI in vista. Some help would be much appreciated, because man do I notice the difference of slowness in xp now that I am back to using it. I'd prefer to use vista if I can get my 5.1 to work properly

There must be some trick with XFI and the audio control panel or even the creative panel application which I don't mind installing should I need to in order to fix it.

In vista my apps and system just responded faster and my sata transferred at 60-65mb on file copies.

Hi 08Roush- Your problem sounds like a driver issue. If you have installed the latest driver/s for your setup, there may in fact be a compatibility problem with the 64 bit OS. Firstly: Yes--I'm aware that there's not a single "best" AV out there. And I know that no AV will protect anyone 100% of the time. I know common sense is the best tool, etc; I've read quietman7's posts and the guide (

Anyway, I would just like to hear some opinions for choosing an AV based on my current rundown. I've done prior research, so I know the basic gists of most AV programs. Here goes:

I am deciding on an AV for 64-bit Windows 7. I share a nice, new desktop computer with my two brothers. Being young and addicted to the web, the lot of us are not prone to be the safest internet surfers/users in the world, but at the same time none of us are terribly gullible or lacking in common sense, so we won't go around clicking and downloading anything that will likely harm the computer. (Actually, to be honest, I'm a relatively safe surfer, but I cannot always control my brothers.) My brothers game from time to time, so I'd prefer something that's light on the system and that's not a huge resource hog (I hear Kaspersky is pretty heavy). However, I don't necessarily want to give up better security for size/weight of the AV. Also, price isn't my primary concern (I'm willing to pay for quality), although it'd be nice to opt for something cheaper. Also, I'm already using comodo firewall + malwarebytes (free vers... A:deciding between AVs

My personal choice is NOD32 Anti-Virus if choosing a paid for program as it leaves a small footprint. That means it is not intrusive and does not utilize a lot of system resources.I recommend taking advantage of the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Pro) Protection Module in the full version which uses advanced heuristic scanning technology to monitor your system and provide real-time protection to prevent the installation of most new malware. This technology runs at startup where it monitors every process and helps stop malicious processes before they can infect your computer. Keep in mind that this feature does not guarantee something will not slip through as no product can detect and prevent every type of malware. The database that defines the heuristics is updated as often as there is something to add to it. Also keep in mind that Malwarebytes does not act as a real-time protection scanner for every file like an anti-virus program so it is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute. Enabling the Protection Module feature requires registration and purchase of a license key that includes free lifetime upgrades and support. After activation, Malwarebytes can be set to update itself and schedule scans automatically on a daily basis. The Protection Module is not intrusive as the program utilizes few system resources and should not conflict with other scanners or anti-virus programs. If any conflicts between Malwarebytes and another security program are reported, suggested solution... Read more

A:A Little Help Deciding

Hi Vapo, Welcome to forum,

I would hold onto Vista for the simple reason Windows Seven is a RC and you will not be able to upgrade from it once the RTM is out. No matter what, you'll have to revert back to vista or buy windows seven and do a Clean ReInstall. If anything, I would install a fresh copy of the 64 bit in place of the 32 bit Seven just to test it.

It seems many people aren't planning ahead far enough or don't realize they won't be able to keep a fully working RC on there PC. According to ms, user's will not be able to use a RTM license key or upgrade to RTM from the RC. A clean install is in everybody's future.

I'm from Australia and have limited amount of money to spend on a new system. I am thinking about an :

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor
ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NForce 4 Ultra

I need memory and a case, as I already have a graphics card, harddrive, monitor, sound card, speaker etc. I will use this computer for multi-tasking (minimal gaming and no draining programs like video editing etc). But I have a few questions first:

1. I need a cheap case, how much power will I need for the PSU: 300w, 350w, 400w or more?

2. With memory, will I need DDR ram?

3. Is the only difference between the NForce Ultra and SLI the extra PCI-Ex slot?

Thanks in advance,

A:Help deciding what to buy

I have just built a 64 bit system using a 450watt psu and it works, howerver, i reccomend u get the most powerful psu u can afford.
With memmory, get the best u can afford as the quicker the memmory the better.
Sli allows u to use 2 graphics card together however, they must be identical for it to work.
Lastly, as the 64bit tech is still new there are a few compatability issues. For example, the system that i built, the disk that came with the mobo is absolutely useless as it wont run the installer program at all. Ive downloaded the drivers but some work and some dont (sata is useless at the mo).

Hello everyone, my name is Kyle. Apparently I am quite new to this forum, I just thought I'd introduce myself. Anyways.

Here's my deal. I am a freshmen in college at Virginia Commonwealth University. I have built my own desktop rig and am quite familiar with the components and functionality of computers, but I have a new venture: I need a laptop for school.

After a lot of reviewing and reading, I have come to like the Dell Inspiron 13 notebook. It seems like it can do what I need it to. This is what I want from my laptop:

> I hate lag, and RAM issues, so lotsa RAM.
> I need this for internet, I have a linksys wireless N (WRT160N) router, so a compatible notebook chipset would be quite desirable.
> I want to play some casual games, but I don't think I'll try for much FPS games or very graphically demanding games.
> As an engineering student, I will be needing to use AutoCAD.
> Price isn't so much of an issue, I just want it to last.
> I want long battery life and an efficient, cooler processor that won't overheat.

On Dell's website, they can configure the Dell Inspiron 13 between these options:

Intel Core 2 Duo T5800
Intel Core 2 Duo T8100
Intel Core 2 Duo T8300
Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200

*The T3200 and the T5800 are right out because of the 65nm chips and their inefficiency. I was leaning towards either the 8100 or the 8300. The 8300 costs $50 more for 300mhz more. Is it worth it? Will it run much hotter... Read more

A:I need help deciding.

If you think you will want XP, go to the For Office > Small & Medium Business section of the Dell website where you can still get XP on some Vostro and Latitude models.

Note that if you buy a laptop with Vista and later decide on XP, you may not be able to find drivers, depending on the laptop model (my son experienced this with a Gateway laptop that now has no wireless or sound capability).

I have a dell vostro 200, which came with the FoxConn G33M02 mobo, and a 300w PSU. I have upgraded the CPU to the Intel Wolfdale E8200, dual core @ 2.66 GHz. My ram is kinda screwy, for a total of 3gb I have 2x 512mb @ 333 MHz and 1x 2048mb @400 MHz. I plan to upgrade the ram, but ddr2 ram is crazy expensive for some reason. Right now upgrading the PSU or ram is out of the question, I just need a video card to play some relatively basic games. Like Prime World from Nival, and once I buy it Guild Wars 2, also Diablo 3.

Hi and thank you for reading me
Several days ago, I launched a in-depth scan with avast! and a few problems popped-up. Most of them were called PUP and were located in my Temporary Internet Files. I found the ones for IE and deleted them but I don't know if Mozilla has its own separate files. Furthermore, one identified as a trojan was located in my Windows Defender scans file (I have the name of the specific infected file if that might help) but I can't find it and even if I did, I don't know what to do with it. Do I just delete it or do I have to do anything else ?
Also prior to that scan, I had very bad network connexion problems. I basically couldn't have access to the web for one of those three reasons :
- Home network but no Internet access
- Unidentified network with Internet access
- Unidentified network and no Internet access
Someone suggested that I might be infected so I did the scan. Now after that, my connexion is much better but not flawless, so I'm wondering if those PUP's might have something to do with it.
Lastly, I've been trying to download .exe files from several hosting sites and everytime I do, in the last few seconds of my download, Mozilla freezes. Seconds later, the file is supposedly on my computer and what I find instead is a file named trzF636.tmp The problem only ever comes with hosting sites and it's K-I-L-L-I-N-G me !

I am trying to fix my father's desktop computer, which he seems to have sufficiently filled with Malware. I am having a very hard time dealing with this, and am hoping for some help. Here are some of the things I know so far: It is a Dell running XP. Currently, I cannot run task manager, either in normal or safe mode. I cannot install Hijack This, MalwareBytes, or any other program in an effort to remove anything. Some of the names I have run across are "AntiMalware Doctor", "Security Tool", as well as the "Microsoft Security Essentials Alert" (particularly when I try to run taskmgr or regedit in the normal mode). I have been able to access regedit when in Safe Mode with Command Prompt... That is as far as I have gotten. I found some junk that seems to be related, but each restart brings me the same "Microsoft Security Essentials Alert" when I reboot and try for the taskmanager. As I can't seem to run anything on the desktop, I am using my laptop to try to download any potentially useful programs and move them over with a jump drive, but nothing will load. Hi there
Out of the blue today when I started up chrome my normal tab opened (I use new tab redirect) and another tab called opened up as well.
I ran malwarebytes and it kept blocking the program over and over but to no avail.
After wards I ran rougekiller and when it popped up as PUP i deleted it (this was in chrome) it was gone, however i was signed out of chrome and I need to stay signed into chrome for work purposes. When I signed back in it was back and now when I run rougekiller it will not disappear.
I went to C:/ProgramData and tried to delete the DLL files there however that didn't work either.
In my control panel there is a random program called Fast and Safe by Gtgroup however when I try deleting it it comes up with an error message stating:
There was a problem starting C:\PROGRA~3\FASTAN~1\FASTAN~1.DLL The specified module could not be found
I believe it is referring to the files I tried to delete earlier
I really am at a lose as to what to do and require some assistance!

Windows 7, booting up, trying to go into Safe Mode, with networking.
As soon as it comes up, I try to log in (Still disconnected from the network, and it reboots the system.
Is this something new, or maybe unrelated?

A:Lucky Infected and No Safe Mode now?

Welcome to BC...
This is the second time this week that someone has posted not being able to boot into safe mode. Please
start a new topic in the Malware Removal forum and let the pros see if it is a new malware or just a coincidence.
Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.
If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.
When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. Explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.
After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can close this one.
DO NOT bump your new topic. Wait for a response from one of the Team Members.

I'm not able to use internet in regular mode of windows xp. If i restart in safe mode with network support I can access the internet.I have checked everything concerning driver issues etc. The ip is correctly assigned. I have done several scans wit MBAM, I've used registry cleaners, etc. It all started a couple weeks ago when the pc started working very slow. I did a disk cleanup, defragmented the harddisk, did registry cleans, scanned for viruses etc. It was a bit better but not too much. - On a small Peer-to-Peer network...
- One PC is infected
- Setup is: Cable Modem connected to small Linksys Router connected to a few PC's

1 - Is it a concern that the malware could spread to other PC's in the small Workgroup?
2 - If so will this fix it while still allowing the infected PC net access...
.. turn off all clean PC's
.. remove the infected PC from the Workgroup
.. turn on the clean PC's
This way the infected PC is not in the Peer-To-Peer Workgroup but it is still sharing the same router...

Right now I'm turning off (or disconnecting) all clean PC's from the network before turning on the infected PC. This is a problem for other users.

Thanks for any help.

Hi guys. I just joined this site and this is my first post. My desktop has been infected with Malware/Viruses and won't boot in any mode (safe, safe + networking, last good setting, or normal mode). The closest thing I get is when i go to safe mode and i get a total black screen with no start button or taskbar and on each of the four corners says "safe mode". However, I cannot do anything else on the screen. (Using laptop right now due to desktop being down)

After some research on the web I found that I could try the Avira Rescue CD and would hopefully remove the malware/virus. It's been almost a week but if memory suits me right, the virus was called Cleanup Antivirus. I also was experiencing google redirects. I have already finished most of the steps on the following Avira rescue cd instructions website:

I am currently stuck on step 7 part 2&3. The reason for this is because in the command line, I type exactly what is instructed but the only thing it does is in the next line says:

"Devices" (text is in a neon greenish-blue font) (This is when i type in "ls /mnt")
When i type in " /mnt " it then says "/bin/ash: /mnt: Permission denied"

Not sure what to do because I have already restarted my computer and tried all modes including safe and normal but am still unable to get my normal computer settings.

I would get my log files with Hijack ... Read more

I would be very grateful for some help sorting out a friend's PC please.

I've read the First Steps page but cannot carry out all of the suggested scans.

When I boot the PC normally, it works very slowly loading XP Home, then suddenly reboots itself before getting to the login screen. I discovered that it will run in Safe Mode with Networking and I'm using it now to create this thread!

I've run dds.scr and the scan result is pasted below. (Attach.txt is included here in a zipped file). When I try to run GMER nothing happens. The egg timer appears for a few seconds but nothing more. I have downloaded SPTDinst-v162-x86.exe. Executing this file results in a popup stating "No SPTD version was detected". The Uninstall button was greyed-out but the Install button looked inviting, so I clicked it and was prompted to re-start Windows. I restarted XP in Safe Mode and it appeared to load SPTD.sys.

Before looking at this forum I was going to attempt a Windows re-install and backed up My Documents onto a USB memory stick, which I then scanned with Avira on a another laptop. This revealed 16 music files, which had been downloaded with Limewire (I presume), all containing the same virus - EXP/ASF.GetCodec.Gen. I've uninstalled LimeWire now.

I have tried to install Avira AntiVir Personal (in Safe Mode) but, after extracting a load of files to a Temp folder, it gets part way through 'Preparing Installation...' then crashes(?).

I don't know what to try n... Read more

Hi there
Out of the blue today when I started up chrome my normal tab opened (I use new tab redirect) and another tab called opened up as well.

Hi, last fri I received an email via my yahoo account from UPS ( which I now now is not). I think this is a nasty virus has worms too.Avira scanned the file before I unzipped it, I did not get any warning, even though I had updated avira files before, then it went spirling downhill!!I had so many windows opening up, I immediately disconnected from the net then proceded to virus scan with Avira. At the end of the scan, it could not help as it was infected. I could not open the report, even though there were warnings.I tried Spybot scan which found a majority of problems which I allowed the fix. I did not think it wise to go on the net as I kept getting Internet Explorer pages opening up.All during this time I was getting Norton virus updates and warnings - I dont have nortons so ignored them and did not open any of the files. Just closed at the X them and made sure i was disconnected from net. After spybot cleaned up, I used ATF to clean my temp files and then turned off and re-started.Since then I can not log on to windows, even in safe mode and adminstrator. Browser keeps crashing and PC still very slow. I couldn't do anything unless I was in safe mode. Initially, the icons on desktop were almost completely gone. System is 7 Premium, 3 GB RAM, AMD processor. Thanks for getting me started on getting out of this nightmare.

A:Slow Infected PC; ran JRT and ADW from safe mode

Let's start with a scan using DDS. See if you can get into 'safe mode with networking' :

Download DDS from one of these links:

DDS.pifDisable any script blocking protection
Double click the dds icon to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt
Attach.txt <--- will be minimized in the task tray

Save both reports to your desktop.
Include the contents of both logs in your next post.

The scan will instruct you to post Attach.txt as an attachment.

I have Wxp Pro on a Dell pc. I get no pop-ups, but programs are slow to open and slow to run. I can't start the pc in safe mode by using F2, F8, F12, etc. When those keys are used, the pc ignores it and starts normally.
When a browser window is open, I can open a site, can scroll thru the site, but can't click on any links or buttons. It acts as if it is just a graphic.
One strange thing, if I minimize the browser window, then maximize it again, I can then surf inside the site.

I have run Ccleaner and Ada-ware. I then ran Rkill, then SuperAnti-spyware and Malwarebytes. Running a full scan on both. SuperAnti found 53 items, quarantined all, but no help. Malware did not find any issues.
I've tried a system restore, but keep getting "can't restore system.......".

Any fast help is appreciated, this is for a school secretary's pc.

I'm on a really tight budget and i dont game that often, so basically i just want the most bang for my buck. here are the contenders so far:

ASUS Geforce 6200 - $94 on newegg
ASUS Radeon X700 LE - $106 on newegg
ASUS Geforce 6600 - $122 on newegg

I've been reading this comparison:

which has the x700 (and im pretty sure they said they didnt use the pro version) killing the other cards. well, lemme know what you think, thank ya

CPU - AMD FX-8350

RAM - Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT8G3D1609DS1S00

Graphics Card - GIGABYTE GV-R777OC-2GI Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 2GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready Video Card

If I build the above I will take the DVD, card reader and the 1TB WD Blk HDD from the 540 and install in the build. By doing this I keep my costs around $800... the XPS-8700 is $850.

ALSO, if I build, I have a few questions...
(1) are the above parts compatible?
(2) do I buy a SSD as my master HD and my WD Blk as my slave?
(3) buy another WD Blk HDD and setup a RAID 0 to get a speed bump or

hey guys i was planning on getting a 8800gt a couple months ago. Then my older brother wanted me to go halfs with him on a ps3. So there my saved up money for a 8800gt went and now my birthday is coming up in april then my confirmation in may so im going to have at least like $500. And now i was debating to still get a 8800 gt or a 8800 gtx . Im going to start off with my explanation of the 8800GT if i get the 8800GT i dont have to get a new power supply . Next i will tell you about the 8800GTX if i get this card i will need a new power supply ( any suggestions on the power supply?) also this card will give me amazing performance and wont totally break my bank because the one i found is only $399CAN . But i was thinking since i found the 8800 gt so cheap i might get a new power supply and just grab 2 8800gt for SLI the 8800gt i was looking at costed $239CAN each
anyways any suggestions guys? much apppreciated!

First the specs:

Giga-byte GA-7 VAX
ATI 9800 Radeon Pro
768 DDR 2700
AMD Athlon XP 2000 (1.67 GHz)

So I just wanna give my system a little bit of a boost. I'm thinking maybe something like an AMD Athlon XP 2700 to get my computer up to a 2.0 GHz speed, just not sure if it's worth it. Also I'm looking at some of these "Barton" processors that AMD has. What's the scoop on them? Would I be better with going with a Barton than a regular Athlon XP?

Let me know what you all think.

A:Need some help deciding on new AMD Processor

im not sure it quite works like that rick. i had a 2500+ barton last year, well known as the best overclocker, which you can get up to over 3200+ speeds. "Barton Support" isnt quoted anywhere, i think you'll find most boards, given a sufficient FSB will work, if not at full pace. the only difference of course is the clock speed and the L2 cache. in all honesty, they ARE better, but buy the fastest you can afford, the 3200 is the top at the mo, and damn it's fast.

BUT you must make sure your board supports a 400MHz FSB for the 3200. (though it'll run at 333 if you ask it, but slower)

why not get a 64? - damn good.
the 3000-64 isnt much more than a 3200+ barton XP.

Choices!!!!!!! good luck

If I were to buy a single 1 GB card could I then add another card of different size in the other slot at a later date, or do both slots have to be the same.

Also, my current RAM is PC2100, how can I find out waht's the highest speed of RAM that the computer would benefit from and what happens if the RAM is too fast for the rest of the system?

I've tried the 'Crucial Memory' site for information but my laptop isn't on there.

Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone I need help deciding on a new mobo, processor, memory and video card. I very frequently go to so anything there is cool with me. I had originally planned on,, for the mobo., for the video card., for the processor., for the memory (times 2).

Are these choices adequate for an nice system? I have exactly $450 to spend so if anyone could help me put together something a little faster and cheaper that woulc rock. Also I do not plan to overclock this new computer so those mobile processors are not an option. I have always trusted nVidia graphics cards so I would like to stay with that especially since I heard that ATI cards are sometime not compatible with most games. As for the memory I know that 3200 would be better than the 2700 so if anyone could help me look for something faster that could rock too.

I would like nothing better than an 3200+ processor but don't really have the cash for a new one, and since refurbished ones do not come with a warranty (or the OEM ones too) and I don't have any extra cash I really need a new one. I'm looking to get a laptop to basically replace my desktop PC. I really like the macbook pro, but I don't have the kind of money to buy it, and I'm not a big fan of apple or macs. I have also looked at HP, the pavilion dv5t series with the intel core 2 duo 8600 (2.4 Ghz), the 1680 x 1050 display (is the infinity screen nice?), 3GB memory, 512MB 9600 GT, 250 GB HDD. Here's the link if you want to see it . These are really the only two I've looked at so far. I spend a lot of time online, and will also probably be doing some light gaming, and a lot of music and movies. I'd like to be in about the $1300 range when I'm done (although less is better). Any input would be great. Thanks.

A:Help deciding on a laptop

Your link doesn't work, although from the specs it doesn't look too bad. It'd be better going for one with an 8600 series video card, since it'd be cheaper and more suited to light gaming.

I am trying to be as cost efficient as possible here, I am looking to soon play spore and warhammer online at max settings and just have a nice pc that will last me for a while.

These are my current specs and My dillemma is whether I would be better off buying a new mobo case and vid card one piece at a time or buy a barebones kit and scrap everything else I can out of this comp.

My budget is going to be around $500-$600 dollars.

I was really thinking the 680 4gb instead of 2gb but I'm not quite sure if I am going to need the extra ram. I use two monitors but only one for gaming at 1440x900. I play DayZ, Battlefield 3, and other latest games and whatever is coming out. (Battlefield 4 etc).

Because I need to get a new quality PSU I don't know if I will be able to afford a 680 4gb or a 2gb. I was looking at the Radeon 7970 and was wondering what would be the difference besides I will be saving money. Same with the 660ti which I heard you could overclock it to have the same performance as the 680. (Is that true?) And what would be the big difference of getting a 670 4gb or 2gb opposed to the 680?

I could really use some help on making my decision. Right now here are my specifications-

Windows 7 64 bit
500gb HD + 200 Gb external
700w psu ModxStreamPro
Phenom ii x2 960t Quad Core overclocked @ 3.2 ghz
Sapphire Hd Radeon 6850 1gb edition (have two but crossfire has too many glitches and performance issues)
Asus m5 a99x mobo

I am finally updgrading from my 700Mhz Celeron. Here is what i have narrowed the choices down to:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+

Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield

They are about the same price, but the 3400+ comes with a free mobo so it is actually $50 cheaper. The Intel is dual-core, Athlon single. Intel is 2.66GHz, Athlon is 2.4GHz. Intel is 533MHz FSB, Athlon is 800Mhz FSB.

Seems like a toss-up to me, any undiscriminating suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks

Hello everyone. I'm here asking for any recommendations for a soon-to-be college freshmen. Price range is about anything under $1,500 if need be. So I'll take any suggestions.

Also, what do you think about the Lenovo Y410 notebook or Lenovo 3000 Family N Series?

A:Deciding on a Laptop

Are you only going to be using it for college work and Internet browsing?
If so then here we would buy something around £250 - £400 ($500 - $800) is normally good enough for a college freshman.
I'm not sure on American pricing, But we have to pay 17.5% tax on our products here so they would be cheaper there. You probably wouldn't even have to spend as much as I've said.

Okay, so I've been looking and shopping around for a laptop recently, and have narrowed it down to 3-4 specific ones. They are all approximately within the same price range, so price isn't a reall matter to me at the moment, but I would like to know which would probably be the best for my money, such as graphics card, processor, battery life, etc. This will technically be the first laptop I buy, so I want to double check with others to make sure I don't make a mistake. I'm also not familiar with the laptop versions of graphics cards and processors, so I don't know exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm mainly planning on using the laptop for Internet, writing, college, watching movies and videos, video editing, and on the go, although I will also put a few PC games (not high end games like Crysis) on there as well so I can play some of my favorite games without my desktop, so I'll need a card strong enough for that. I'm overall just looking for the best all around laptop from those below. I wouldn't want to pay more money for something less powerful.

Hello there,
I know almost nothing about computers. I feel that's a good way to preface my little request. I currently have a T3104 emachine (Specs: and am looking to play a game that is about to be released (Ultimate Alliance, specifically.) I'm far from what one would concider a gamer, so odds are this is the only new game I play for the next one to two years. That said, I'm looking to spend as little as I have too... but more than the bare minimum needed to play this game. If I'm going to spend money on this, I'd prefer not to have it looking like ****. I'd say my range is in between $100-$200 dollars, hopefully ending up in the area of $150 or less.
Any help would be quite appreciated.

A:Help deciding on a videocard

I doubt very much that that pc will ever play a game like that!!!!

You don't even have an agp slot so you will only be able to run a pci graphics card!!!!
It's probably not possible to turn the onboard graphics off to help with performance with a new card!!!
And the pathetic little power supply unit (psu) would almost certainly die and take the mobo out with it!!!

My son wants to buy a tower pc for gaming like WOW, Sims 4 and other pc games.
I was thinking of buying him the following and was hoping to get some advice if good or not.
Asus Z97 pro(Wifi)
Intel Core i7 -4790 3.6ghz 8mb.
Kingston Hyper X Fury 16g Kit.
Asus GTX660 2G graphics card.
Hoping someone can please give me some honest advice.

A:» Help Deciding on a tower Pc

Do you have a budget for this?

You don't mention hard drives. You should certainly get an SSD for at least Windows and applications. You can use an ordinary hard drive to store data.

I don't game, but I'd guess gaming types would tell you to emphasize the graphics card. There are several steps above the GTX660 that you could consider, but it may be perfectly fine for the games he intends to play. I have no idea.

What resolution will he use?

An i7-4790 would likely be considered overkill for gaming, but if it's within your budget, knock yourself out.

Likewise with 16 GB of RAM rather than 8.

What case do you have in mind?

What power supply?

I assume overclocking is not on your agenda since you haven't chosen a K series processor. In that case, there's no reason to splurge on a Z97 motherboard.

Hey Guys it me again with yet one more question to the guru's who have helped me build this awesome computer in my signature. I need to get the right kind of memory for the mobo and processor in my sig, the only problem I have is the Processor is 333Mhz FSB and I would like DDR400 (which my mobo supports) installed. Does the Processor FSB matter in terms of memory? I am looking at,, is this good memory? If anyone has any suggestions, please write them down. Thanks again guys and gals.

A:Need Help Deciding On Right Memory

As long as the memory is as fast or faster then your CPU FSB you will be fine. With motherboards that use NForce chipsets its best to have the memory syncronized with the CPU for best performance - you can lower the speed of PC3200 to 333Mhz in the BIOS on quality motherboards. PC3200 would also allow better overclocking of your CPU's FSB as its designed to run at 400Mhz already.

The RAM is selcted is ok, but not the best - it has a latency of 3, whereas really good ram has lower latencies like 2.5. If you want really good RAM check of Corsair twin sets for Dual-Channel.

hello all, i am currently looking into a paid antivirus program for my pc. i've done plenty of virus cleanouts here at my job and we recommend and install kaspersky for our customers but since the newest version i haven't been satisfied with the program, and i am seeing a lot of pcs coming back with virus issues even with kaspersky so now i am looking into something different.
after reviewing the latest av comparatives ( i'm interested in eset smart security or bitdefender internet security. i was considering trend micro but it is very lacking in options and a bit too simplistic for me, not a fan. i'm running a trial of bitdefender at the moment and it seems perfectly fine but people really seem to hate on it for one reason or another. eset smart security i haven't particularly heard bad things about but it seems their detection rates aren't quite as good. i'll test it later if they have a trial.
if the issue with bitdefender is that it's "heavier" but has better detection rates doesn't bother me honestly. another option that could work is malwarebytes premium, but it doesn't seem particularly user friendly and lacks some of the nicer features of the bigger programs.

Malwarebytes Premium is NOT an antivirus.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not an anti-virus program nor should it be used as a replacement. Malwarebytes does not act as a real-time protection scanner for every file like anti-virus software so it is intended to be a supplement, not a substitute. The following quote is a statement from the Malwarebytes Team.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not meant to be a replacement for antivirus software. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a complementary but essential program which detects and removes zero-day malware and "Malware in the Wild". This includes malicious programs and files, such as viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and rogue applications that many antivirus programs do not detect or cannot fully remove. It is important to note that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware works well and should run alongside antivirus software without conflicts. In some rare instances, exclusions may need to be set for your specific antivirus product to achieve the best possible system performance.

Hi Photo people

Just looking for upgrade from my FinePix F30 as xD card isn't making anymore.

I am looking for new camera. I would like to use camera to use in safari, but in digital compact.

Compared to lots of camera, I quite like Lumix TZ40.

16 megapixel
20x zoom
Wifi and gps
Panorama mode

A:Deciding on camera

is that your budget ? £250

you would need to have a long zoom for safari , and that camera with a 20x zoom of 24mm x 480mm
should be OK, as it provides a long zoom and high ISO _ BUT Quality maybe worth seeing a review
then you need a good ISO range and speed , which again you have a good range -

HOWEVER, it will depend on the sort of quality using the camera at the extremes of zoom and higher ISO actually produce
I quite like and also for camera reviews
But they do not appear to have any reviews available

in the US the TM40 is known as the ZS30 - I think, going by the ephotozine site
and this site does have a review

Hi everyone. I have spent days now trudging through laptop specs and deals and think I have narrowed my search down to 2, I am open to any suggestions however!
Requirements - for my 16 year old son (birthday present for the big 16!) for GCSE's and college. I want it to run as fast as possible for my budget but he has an Xbox one for gaming so that is not a consideration. I am aware though that he may like to play some of the PC based civ games. I would like lots of storage too.
Budget - £300 or under. I am trying to be realistic about what we can get for that money and get the best and most reliable machine.
I have found these two which look promising but can't decide (as I said though I am very grateful for any other other suggestions) I don't want to buy second hand.

I am having intel 845 MB with P4 2.4GHZ CPU, 512 MB DR 266 RAM and ATI Radeon 9500 PRO 128 MB Graphics card. I have tried video editing with this setup (using pinnacle 8 / Adobe premiere pro) but finding rendering takes lot of time and even the final quality is not up to mark.

I am thinking of upgrading my system. Should I go for a new MB with DDR 400 support. As I am having a decent 8x AGP card will you please help me in deciding the best value for money upgrade. Is it worth to continue with present graphics card or should I go for a total new system with PCI Express card.

Thank you in advance

A:help deciding upgrade

personally i would go with a better graphics card first due to the fact that video editing is one of the most graphic intensive things you can do and all though your card is 8x agp and works good it really doesnt have the hardware features that you would need to do major video editing however faster ram and a faster processor would also help if you a very serious about it. a lady who lives right above me who does video editing for a living has a dual xeon processor chip running at 3.4 ghz with 3 gig of ram and her computer still gets lagged down every now and then. good luck

Were you happy with the acer when you first got it? Its a laptop so installing a new graphic card may be difficult at best and more than likely impossible. Your current graphics chipset may even be built into the motherboard. If the performance has slowed down and you liked it when you first got it, a clean install would resotre that performance.

Getting ready to upgrade me and my girlfriends video cards this weekend and in an effort to avoid the ever so popular 15% restocking fees I was wondering which drivers are less botched up on Windows 7 64-bit at present?

We both have 9600 GT's (G94) at the moment but I'm leaning towards ATI since we just upgraded our motherboards and it has the 780G chipset. No intrest in hybrid crossfire, just vaguely remember hearing nvidia and ATi don't mesh well together. Not rulling out Nvidia all together on that alone though.

The 9600GT's we have are both 512 DDR3 with cheap stock reference coolers. From what I heard it's better to have a higher amount (1GB) of slower (DDR2) memory with larger monitors than less (512mb) of faster (DDR3) memory. Is this true?

A:Need Help on deciding which Vista Os to run

Mostly minor things. 64 bit is a tad faster and can recognize more ram than 32 bit can. 32 bit recognizes around 3.3ish gigs of ram but that's more than you'll need. I always laugh when people buy computers with something like 8gb of ram - you'll hardly go over 3gigs EVER.

Hey everyone, just trying to get some finality to my new computer build here and I wanted some opinions on cases. After much research and the like, I have settled on,
As far as the power supply, which one of the next two would you guys help recommend,, this is the one I really want or,
Now as far as the case, I chose that for its big size and room to work on the mobo if need be and since I won't be doing any oc'ing at all heat won't be much trouble there. But does the case look like it can take a couple of extra fans such as, Lemme know guys and I'll take steps to try and get something that will remain COOL at all times if this case doesn't meet your par. Thanks.

A:Need help deciding on case

Never can afford an aluminium case but $120 is a lot of bread for a box.

The case is not much different from my top one costing £45 or $75 but at leat it got a LCD panel with temperature probes into CPU, mobo and the video card with the day and time information, moving CD and hard disk graphics. It came with a 400watt psu too. In the past I have never spend more than £25 on an ATX case but two weeks ago I paid £35 for box because it has 5x5.25" bays which is ideal for disk copying work..

I need help deciding what Mobo and CPU to get. I want to be able to play Half Life 2 nicely. I'm pretty sure i want an ASUS Mobo (about $500 tops) that will work for AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and if it's a good idea will work with DDR2, atleast 2GB memory, and 256MB graphics card.

I also wouldn't mind your opinions on the best memory, HD, graphics card, PSU, etc.

Thanks in advance,

A:I need Help deciding about Mobo and CPU

is there ddr2 for amd?, but just to let u know, the 2 gigs of ram will cost u at least 350 and a nice asus mobo will be another 150, they have a new sli mobo if u want to do that

Hey guys, I'm going to order my new setup either tomorrow or friday, but I'm hung up on what cpu/combo to get. Here's what I've narrowed it down to....

For the mobo...I'd like to have support for SATAII for the 2x hitachi drives..SLI is not necessary because I plan on upgrading a few months down the road...but I have some questios concerning the raid on these boards.......

The UT nF4 SLI-DR and nF4 SLI-DR have " NV RAID 0/1/0+1 JBOD", whereas the Ultra-D only has "raid 0/1" ..what's the difference in the two? Also, the firs two mobos (ut/nf4 sli-dr) have an additional sata raid and additional raid controller "sli 3114", but the Ultra-D doesn't...will any of this effect the performance of the hitachi sataII hdds in raid 0?

For the cpu...I'm new to overclocking, but I'm willing to take the time to learn/test so I'd like to get it to 2.4ghz or if higher is possible (stable) on stock heatsink/fan or si-120/120mm fan...

Since I'll be upgrading later on I wanted to keep this as close to $1000 as possible or maybe a little over...the rest of the computer is listed in my sig (price for those items is $627) so for the remaining money I'd like to get the best cpu/mobo combo possible...I'm open to other suggestions on the rest of the comp parts too, but I... Im building a new computer and cant decide if i should go to the 64 bit win 7.
I searched around and it seems to me that some programs dont work on 64 bit systems, but the article was from 2008.
I like the fact that i can utilize more ram but is that the only advantage? What would you guys do?

A:Need help deciding 32 or 64 bit install

I had the same problem about a month ago. And i asked the same question. Even though the world is going to 64bit it is way to early and there is like no 64bit programs. The only programs that do well in a 64bit environment are Photoshop and Video editing software. If you are a gamer or a normal computer user go 32bit.

I'm trying to decide on a Athlon 64 X2 (AM2), but I really can't figure out which one will work better. It's primary function will be gaming. Which one of these would be the better choice?

I noticed the 5400+ has a 1mb cache, but a speed of 2.8GHz. While the 5200+ has a 2mb cache, but a speed of 2.6GHz. What effects the performance (At least for gaming) more?

Are there are any better AM2 Processors for ~$200? I'm just looking for the best possible deal.

hi all. i am building a system for my brother and i am undecided about which cpu to get.

the cpus in question are the amd athlon xp 2500+, amd athlon xp 2800+, and the intel p4 2.4c. the 2800+ and 2.4c i can get at the same price. is that 800mhz fsb and hyperthreading worth it? i hear that the 2.4c could OC pretty good. or should i just save 100 bucks and get the 2500+ and OC that. i am unsure at what i should do.

thank you all in advance.

A:need help deciding which processor to get

the 2500+ with some good cooling and fast RAM will go easily and cheaply to 3200+ speeds (which is faster in games than MOST P4s and MUCH cheaper)
get a 2500+, a A7N8X Deluxe, and 2 sticks of 256(or 512)meg DDR3200 corsair CAS 2 ram

That second site doesn't list any specs for the RAM. Either set would probably be just fine. If you're looking to overclock then you may want to look at higher end RAM. If you're using an AMD64 CPU, value ram is just fine.

Hey guys.
Right now I have a HP Pavilion a1123c which is pretty good except for the built-in graphics card. I recently got a Geforce 7300 GS PCI Express to play games only to find that my PC only has PCI slots. I've been looking in the motherboard market, but I dont know what to buy. Any suggestions on what motheboard both works and is cheap?

A:Need help deciding a motherboard

Take a look at the few PCI cards at anything above $60 and 128 MB will be good... the more you spend, the better they are... They may even have a couple of 256 MB cards left.
They do not have any bad cards... but it is a matter of cost.
When they are gone, they are gone.

my friend wants me to fix his computer. Yesterday when I first played with it, it started up until it got to the Windows XP Professional logo, then it rebooted everytime. So i decided to try and format it. Today I brought my disk from home, and it inspects all the configurations fine, but when i choose format using NTFS it says "Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged. Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected." I'm sure the drive is connected fine, because i dont think he would ever open it himself and look. But i did open it and everything looks fine to me. I also tried to format with the NTFS (Quick), and the same thing. I told him that his drive is probably crashed. Its a Pentium 2, Gateway 2000, not sure of the specs, but when the computer starts it says:

0640K System RAM passed
0095K Extended RAM passed
0512k Cache SRAM Passed

While formating there is 6,142MB (6GB) free. And thats all thec computer has is 6 GB of memory. I told him that it would be better if you bought a new computer. So what do you guys think? This computer dead? or just needs a new HDD?

Hello new forum, my name is Becca and I have been advised to post in here.  First, I would like to say thank you for what help I have received, and your patience and guidance.  Ok let me start at the beginning.  Around the end of September or beginning of October my laptop started acting krazy.  I would check for Windows updates and try to download and install them only to have them fail, or all fail but 1 or 2 would go through.  And one day it said I had 61 updates, because it had not updated in over a week.  So I had already been trouble shooting, me reading articles and feed back in MIcrosoft support or or on Microsoft -tech.  Then I notice one day this user “Updatus” came up.  Well there is no one on my laptop ever, just me.  I went back again trouble shooting and went word for word  in this steps found on Microsoft support to remove this account.  I backed up a copy of my registry keys first and then I thought I had this account deleted only for it to be back tomorrow.  The next day, I am changing some settings in control panel and was going to back up some stuff when I get this error message saying I could not back up because files in the Task Scheduler were corrupt or tampered with.  So when I opened the Task Scheduler Ig showed me that HP Active Health Scan (HPSA)was the same error, along with all of these;pc health Analysis, HP Support Solutions, Frame work updates, MC updates_scheduler, Dis... I recently reinstalled my computer and it runs like a dream again Beforehand I was having mouse glitches, freezing, missing icons, and my antivirus wasn't updating itself properly--neither was Malwarebytes Pro. I scanned my system many times but neither could find anything wrong. I don't think I had a virus.. but I know I had something going on, possibly malware.

I currently have my files sitting on an external hard drive and Google Drive, and I'm concerned about reinfecting my system during the transfer & download of these files. Apparently, malicious things can still travel through the autorun.inf file of my external hard drive, and the .exe files sitting on my Google Drive. Are there any precautionary steps I can take to secure my system from any possible infection? Please help~

A:are my files safe?

External storage media and flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drives are prone to infections which involve malware that modifies/loads an autorun.inf (text-based configuration) file into the root folder of all drives (internal, external, removable) along with a malicious executable. For flash drives and other USB storage, autorun.ini uses the Windows Explorer's right-click context menu so that the standard "Open" or "Explore" command starts the file. Malware modifies the context menu (adds a new default command) and redirects to executing the malicious file if the "Open" command is used or double-clicking on the drive icon. When a flash drive becomes infected, the Trojan will infect a system when the removable media is inserted if autorun has not been disabled. Keep in mind that autorun.inf can also be a legitimate file which other legitimate programs depend on so the presence of that file may not always be an indication of infection. If you backed up files due to malware infection, make sure you scan them with an an anti-virus prior to copying them back to your hard drive. The safest practice is not to restore any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), dynamic link library (*.dll), .ini, .bat, .com, .cmd, .msi, .pif, or script files (.php, .asp, .htm, .html, .xml) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid restoring compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executables inside them as some types of malware can penetrate compr... Read more

Looks normal to me, I have much the same files, except Mapping3. The repository is for data held in the Web Based Enterprise Management form and used by WMI (Windows Management Interface). Do you have any reason to suspect them? Virus scan flag them?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, if not then sorry !

My laptop is infected with vitumunde, vundo and there has also been notes from noton saying its blocked kill.av and spysherrif. I found this forum a few days ago and posted a hjt log in the forum. I'm still in the queue at the moment, but since hten i have used ad-aware and spybot s&d, used msconfig to only use microsoft adn symantic etc and then scanned again in safe mode. It seems to have helped stop the popups but spybot is still stopping something from making registry changes again. Anyway, I use this computer fro studying and it has all my essays and psych projects on it, is it safe to move them to my desktop ? .....this'll teach me to back things up !!

Any help appreciated.

I have been using AdwCleaner for a while now and it does help a lot. Sometimes ads pop up in my browser and I would just run AdwCleaner and it fixes the problem. Every time before I do this, of course it shows the findings which it detected which are ready to be cleaned but the only boxes I left checked are the ones that are related to the ads that have been bugging my browser and didn't tamper the ones that are related to the registry and other stuff because I don't even know what they are supposed to be. I left their boxes unchecked as I was nervous it might do something wrong with my registry (and other stuff too). Judging by the fact that AdwCleaner did detect them, should I delete these files? I would just like to know if it is safe to proceed with the cleaning. Here is my log:

Hi Guys,

My WinXP Sony Vaio VGN-215M has been infected by what the Dr. Web demo identified as 'NTRootkit.83'. The first symptom I noticed was .EXE files starting to disappear, including my Norton Antivrus. Another problem I noticed is my wireless network connection has disappeared (no networks show up anymore).

I have tried a variety of tools including the McAffeee Rootkit tool beta, but it seems this one is still sticking around. Dr. Web support indicated I should reboot in safe mode and then run Dr. Web to remove it, BUT; when I try a reboot in any form of safe mode, it:

a) reboots
b) shows the loading screen, and then goes through a list of drivers on the bottom of the screen
c) reboots itself back into normal mode

So effectively I cannot reboot into safe mode.

I have output the following Hijackthis logfile, if this helps:
