Q: Gave remote access to a "Microsoft tech support" am I safe?

I got a pop up that was loud and wouldn't let me close it saying, "your computer has been infected call Microsoft" and I did because I turned it off and it was still yelling st me when I turned it back on. I gave the tech remote access and he said I had a tiny something trojan virus. Well I didn't fall for paying, got off the phone, held power button down and turned computer off. Am able to use it fine now with no more warning but am I safe after giving the remote access? I was on the phone for about 30 mins while he was going around to different areas in my computer telling me what all of the "problems" were.

Long story as short as possible.
Just upgraded to full version Windows 10. In the previous 2 tech builds IE stopped working. Error
“ This page cannot be displayed “
Microsoft x 3 Techs 5 hours of remote assistance could not resolve the issue. I had no terminate the connection as was taking too long. Their final suggestion was that they feel there must be some (add-ons) preventing IE from starting.
 
I cannot cover all they did here over 5 hours
However, here are some key areas of trouble shooting done
 
Remediation
Reset Winsock and Network Settings
Reset Proxy Settings
Created another admin account (IE did not run with different user)
Removed Kaspersky Security
Internet options > advanced > restore default > Reset IE settings
All IE add-ons have been disabled within IE settings
Msconfig > turned off all services
 
Has anyone else had an issue like this? I’ve just created and attached a diagnostics scan as this is beyond me level.

Hello,
 
My father saw a pop-up that said his computer had an error and was infected with malware.  The pop-up had a phone number to call.  He talked to someone who said he was a certified Microsoft technician and got my dad scared about the Zeus virus.  My dad gave him access to his computer and they did a remote session.
 
The person did not ask for a credit card number, he asked to be mailed a check but wasn't too worried about getting paid. 
 
I know that my dad should not have done what he did  But now I'm trying to clean the computer from what may be compromised.  I am currently running SpyHunter and it has already found 217 threats detected.  It looks like the scary one is HawkEye keylogger and there is also Conduit Search/Toolbar and FindYourMaps Toolbar.  I'm 70% done.  
 
I'd love to know what to do next and if someone could please walk me through all the things I need to make sure and take care of to keep my dad safe.  Thank you for your help and support!

I have a hp psc 1350 v printer, trying to install on this machine; printer was installed on this machine in nov.2003 and worked fine until 2 weeks ago. at that time , printer quit working and in the control panel, printer icon showed up like a hidden file. tried to reinstall printer several times with no success. contacted hp support, spent several hours, spanning 4 days ,installing and uninstalling software, trying to install this printer. changed usb cables and same problem.other usb devises are recognised instantly. Hp support sent me a new printer, tried to install, same problem...no printer. so, tried to install printer on 2 other pcs and no problem, worked great (one machine has the exact same mother board as the problem pc).Hp says its a chip problems, problem started when i did a windows recommended driver update for via chip. CAN YOU HELP?

Uninstall the printer, through ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, then go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager and remove any left over HP/printer entries - look under HP, USB, all the categories. If HP gave you a seperate uninstaller to use then run that, they usually have one and if you look through your CD you might be able to find it hidden somewhere. Then unplug the printer and all other USB devices - except USB a mouse and Keyboard if yours happen to be USB.

Now still in Device Manager remove all USB hubs and then all USB Controllers.

Now go here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403 and download and install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and reboot as request. Then reboot again after the USB controllers are reinstalled.

Now download the latest printer drivers from HP's website for your model if you haven't done so yet and start the installation. Do not plug in the printer until prompt to do so or until the installation is totally complete. When plugging in the printer use a USB connector that is not near the one you used before - they are usually in pairs of two.

If that Fails you can do a System Restore from Programs - Accessories - System to a date before the problems started and hope it works and doesn't recur.

XP runs better with more RAM - if there's nothing wrong with it then add it back in.

Okay so this is a pretty long story. Anyways I needed C++ Redis 2015 for a program for school to work, It kept failing so I went through the trouble shoots, repairing, deleting, reinstalling, repairing all previous C++ redist versions, restarting computer etc etc Then I went to the next trouble shoot which was to update windows. It would not update even after running the update reset tool and cc cleaner and at this point I was fed up and contacted Microsoft.
After about three hours of the techie screwing around in my pc she says lets try updating to win10. I say fine as long as I can downgrade back to win7. It upgrades, windows updates are working but god win 8/10 on a non touch screen sucks. So I almost immediately switch back to win7 after confirming that windows updates are working and C++ redist 2015 would download without fail. But apparently the techie deleted my catroot folders at some point into her troubleshooting, I stopped paying attention after like 2 hours. This of course corrupted my bios. Which gave me the amazing 0000000X6 Process1_FAILURE_INITIATE BSOD
At this point I had been up like 20 hours and stopped using my brain, she recommends I get into bios and switch the boot options to my Disc Drive and reinstall windows which I knew I wasn't going to do because I have like 100 hours of school work including my dissertation and thesis and 80% of my group project on it and am not willing to lose it. If you can't start Windows or get into BIOS, you could try resetting BIOS by removing and reinstalling the CMOS battery,
Some motherboards also have a hardware reset option, so you don't have to remove/reinstall the CMOS battery.

Your specs show you have a Desktop PC, getting the PC manufacturer or motherboard manuals might help you with BIOS and CMOS reset instructions.

Our company, a small based business, wants to get into Remote Tech Support, Customers call in, or visit the website, and we fix problems remotely.
Of couse they must have internet access...that works...

Asking from all the people here, who has ideas of what kind of software would do this?
I have checked multiple online companies, prices can get steep.
Only 1 person, maybe 2, will be doing this remote support starting out, so dont need anything with 50+ users license.

I was thinking like PCAnywhere, or VNC, and such, but not sure how that would work web based and such...and I know Microsoft has the Assistance built into MSN Messenger, but it is remote view only i believe.

Anyway, I would greatly appreciate some alternatives...especially cheap ones!

I went to Symantecs web site for tech support on my virus product and they asked for remote access for my computer and I allowed it. Well it took them 2 hours to fix a 45 minute problem. The person wasnt paying attention to me and I did most of the work fixing my problem and so when the company sent out the survey on tech support I complained and gave out the persons name. Ever since then My computer has lost the cd rom in which i finally got back and then it lost the scanner and I am working on recovering its drivers and such. Now when I email people it take forever to type a line and every time i turn on MSN messenger I have to type in my info even after I have clicked save all information. I have attached my hijack log. and I am aware of silentbug, i have it to watch my childrens activities online lol

Hello.  This account is being used by two people: the PC owner and a neighbor who is trying to help.  The PC owner had a cold call at the beginning of September which claimed to be able to tell that the PC owner was sending infected files.  A week later, the neighbor heard about this and recognized this as a tech support scam.  The neighbor was able to determine that the tech support scammer had installed the free version of AVG AntiVirus, but not much else. 
 
The neighbor attempted to run a few free tools to find out if any malicious software was left behind, but due to problems with saving the logs or virus scanners apparently crashing, the neighbor and the PC owner never found any conclusive results for most of those.  The neighbor was following some advice given on a different forum to the victim of a similar scam (link), so dds logs have already been created, but the neighbor would rather have someone who understands them take a look at them. 
 
The neighbor also ran TDSSKiller, but set to Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system.  No actions were taken to remove anything using this tool, but a TDSS file system was detected; we don't know what is on it, yet.
 
The scammers apparently used TeamViewer to access the PC owner's computer, and maybe LogMeIn Rescue.  An empty folder was left for LogMeIn Rescue, but program files remained for TeamViewer.  The neighbor copied... Read more

Boy do I feel stupid, I was having trouble with figuring out my new outlook email. I got frustrated looking online for information and called what I thought was a Microsoft tech help ctr. The person on the phone told me she would connect me with a tech. thru a chat window at chat123.us. I proceeded to follow prompts and began chat with the tech. the tech stated I was probably infected with third party spyware and my email was hacked.During the process the tech asked to check some things. she pulled up a command prompt window and started looking at my ip address, she also got my start-up window open. When done she said I was infected and showed me where. She said she could fix for a fee. Already suspicious I declined and logged off. I ran my avira free antivirus and it came up clean and my computer seems to be ok but I fear I may have compromized my system. What now?

I don't know anything about computers and my 87 year old mother knows even less. She frequently will click on something that causes her email system to change passwords without being aware of it or do something else that causes her problems. We live an hour apart, but she wants me to come over to help. I thought I found the solution when her service provider COMCAST offered tech support through their XFININTY. She could call them, they would remote into her computer and fix her problem usually within 20 minutes. A few days ago, she got a letter saying that they were cancelling that service option and refunding her $ 15 monthly fee.

I have heard of so many scams out there. Are there any good legitimate and reasonably priced tech support services out there that she can call to remote into her system to figure out her issues? She has Windows 2010 and uses Outlook 2010 for email.

Hello.  We posted in the Am I Infected? forum previously in this topic.  To recap, there are two people using this account, the PC owner and a neighbor helping out.  The PC owner gave remote access to someone running a tech support scam, the neighbor has been trying to do some scans to figure out what (if any) malicious software may have been left behind and remove it.  One of the performed scans was with TDSSKiller and after we posted the log we were directed to make a topic here.  Logs are still posted in the other topic, but DDS logs were created previously which have not been posted.  We also just ran DDS again, to give you fresher logs to look at, should that make a difference after running SUPERAntiSpyware.  SUPERAntiSpyware found only found tracking cookies, which have been removed.
 
GMER was also suggested by the previous helper, but we have been unable to reach the website to download it, either on the owner's PC or on the neighbor's.   We did not run Malwarebytes AntiMalware a 3rd time (the 2nd time had no detections, the 1st time had maybe 2, but the log wasn't saved before the neighbor could view it).  The other scans which have been attempted were with Microsoft Security Essentials (which found nothing) and an online ESET scan which crashed before its results could be viewed.

I recall many years ago VNC use to have a client you could use with a VNC server that would allow very easy remote support
 
You could place a link on your website the client would download a small file and run said file and the tech would get a notification that someone needed assistance and you would connect.
 
For the life of me I can not remember the tool used to wrap VNC inside this application.

I am looking for the best remote control software that works on a budget.

What do you recommend?

I would like most of the following features below. Most important is
that I can provide the most common support features to solve a
person's computer problem remotely, and it works through firewalls
with no client or support person setup. I imagine that means a
web-based solution like webex.com or inquerio.com, but they are too expensive for my
budget.

I liked DualDesk's features and price but the trial prooved not to work for a client's firewall I think. That is why I believe web-based is the answer.

Hey all,

What applications do you guys use for this? Today my dad called me with his printer not working. After some unsuccessful attempts of trying to walk him through troubleshooting over the phone, I tried to get him to invite me with Windows 10 Remote Assistance, but it just gave him the error that his computer was not set up to send invitations.

Not sure what that was about. Then on a whim, I had him join and create a join.me meeting, and once I could see his screen and control his mouse I quickly fixed the problem.

Join.me isn't the best for this purpose though, as it prevents you from performing admin tasks (once you start something that requires elevated privileges, you lose mouse control)

Are there any better alternatives for next time I could use to screen share with him?

I liked the fact that join.me didn't require me to mess with port forwards for a direct connection like something like VNC would.

I don't really know what other options there are. I'm not a professional, so I am obviously not going to go out and buy an expensive software package for this purpose.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe there is a quick fix to the "this computer is not set up to send invitations" message. (Maybe this is because he uses webmail, and doesn't have a email address associated with Windows?)

Appreciate any suggestions.

My grandfather got taken in by a Microsoft Windows Support Scam and I'm fairly certain that his laptop's got a bug that I can't get rid of.

What happened:

He got a popup (while using Internet Explorer and after downloading an Adobe update) that said there was a security issue and that he needed to call a number for Windows Firewall Service.
(I looked up the number and apparently other people have been taken in by this scam. Here it is on a Microsoft forum:

After he told me what happened, I checked out his laptop. He had about a dozen popups that wouldn't close and some malware programs were added, which I have removed.

My grandfather got taken in by a Microsoft Windows Support Scam and I'm fairly certain that his laptop's got a bug that I can't get rid of. 
 
What happened:
 
He got a popup (while using Internet Explorer and after downloading an Adobe update) that said there was a security issue and that he needed to call a number for Windows Firewall Service. 
(I looked up the number and apparently other people have been taken in by this scam. Here it is on a Microsoft forum:

So in recent days I have been advised by Microsoft that they cannot provide me with support resolving a windows 10 activation issue. I replaced a motherboard for one of my clients and it failed activation even after reentering the key. Everything looked as it should be to activate. I went to Microsoft for support and they refused to help me because i am a technician ..not the owner of the PC. This policy of not providing tech support to computer repairers because they are not the owners of the system is ridiculous. I am interested to know if anyone else has had similar experiences from microsoft "support"

New motherboard (if it's a different model than the one you replaced) = new system according to Microsoft's EULA/ToS for Windows keys. So if it's an OEM key, new motherboard = buy a new key.

My son just called me saying a window popped up saying something along the lines of "your computer may be infected.  call Microsoft tech support" and then they listed a number to call. Well, my son being the computer savvy expert that he is called the freakin number. He let whomever on the other end log into our computer and then told my son he needs $200.00 to clean it up for us. Could anyone tell me what (if any) damage could have been done?? This is the kids computer, so, as far as i know there is no important login information on it. But it is connected to the house wifi and I just don't know if that could be an issue.

So he called the number (1-888-447-4192) not knowing it was a scam and they said they were from Windows and that they needed remote access to his laptop to solve the security issue, which he gave them. (He said he did not give them any personal information, however.)

After he told me what happened, I checked out his laptop. He had about a dozen popups that wouldn't close and some malware programs were added, which I have removed.

I appear to have multiple viruses wreaking havoc. At first things were just v. slow, then there were a few screen wipeouts and my wireless connection just kept shutting down. Now, I am only able to boot my computer to XP using the Last Good Configuration, must go to the internet directly thru the Verizon DSL box (Linksys Wireless G not working at all), and must disable patch-resistant Sasser popups using Run/shutdown -a before I can get on the web. And once I am on the net, I can browse generally and check yahoo email but can't log in to other password sites (for example, MyEbay) or complete online transactions (for example, purchasing anti spyware software online), and I battle constant pop up ads.

I was on the phone with microsoft yesterday about one virus I identified - Sasser. They had me download two files to fix it - the Sasser Worm Removal Tool (KB841720) and I believe a patch (KB835732) but they didn't work. Tech Support gave up, said I was probably "infested" with other viruses that were preventing these tools from working. Can someone help me?

I've run samples of other anti trojan and spyware and virus hardware - some found nothing wrong with my machine (Trojan Hunter, Panda) - others found multiple issues. WHAT a MONTH! My "new", now 4 mo old system had a bad memory stick which caused sooo many problems that I have had to reformat hard drive, reinstall W2KPro, and start all over! Have been on the line with MS tech support almost constantly for the last 22 days. Bummer! BUT... hopefully this system will operate correctly now...
I use a free auction build/submit software called AuctionSubmit for posting eBay auctions. The eBay "categories" need to be updated or it will not post the built auctions. When I try to update I get a ( run-time error 3315: Field categories can't be a zero-length string ) pop-up box. This program did work on the machine before the reinstall just fine. The other thing that has changed is installing Norton Internet Security software. Is there a possible conflict between the two programs? I really need to get back to work but can't without the Auction Submit. Help!!!

A:Need help after Microsoft Tech Support! Run-time error! @#?&!!!

A lot of AntiVirus, Firewall and other similar software can cause headaches through conflicts etc. The best plan is to shut down such software before installing anything else. Try uninstalling your ebay program, shut down norton, reinstall ebay and then turn norton back on (allow for restarts etc), this may solve your problem. Good luck.

The other possible causes could be that you are running different versions following your reinstall of Windows; ensure all your software's upto date if you can, this tends to result in smoother systems altogether.

The title pretty much says it all. What I have been seeing for some time now is a lot of my clients that click on ads in the right hand advertising panel of the facebook page have ended up with malware on their systems and big warnings on the screen to call a toll free number to fix their system and when they do are told it is Microsoft tech support which it is not and they want access to your system. If you give it to them you are then really in a jackpot of a problem. So just a warning, I tell my clients that it is a good rule of thumb NOT to click on anything in the right pane of their page as you have no clue which ones will cause this issue. Of late mostly the ones about stars dying or having other problems seem to be the most likely ones but I have seen it in others as well. One would think that facebook would do something about these type of things but sadly they are about the almighty dollar and don't seem to care. So every one please watch what you click on facebook. Especially if it seems to good to be true because if so it usually is.

I just helped a small office transfer all their existing computers and equipment over to a new office site. They had new voice and data cables run, as well as patch panel and telephone and cable modem equipment set up in new office

The private telephone tech requested that I port forward port 8000 to the telephone equipments' IP address

He also requested that I provide the Office Static IP address to him

My question is--am I opening this office's network up to any security risks by forwarding port 8000 to his telephone equipment's internal system IP address and providing him the actual Static IP address of the office Internet connection?

I upgraded from norton internet 07 to N 360. When I power up computer I get a message
"Auto-Protect experienced an unexpected error 0x000003E8 3035,6"

When I tried to install N 360 got message "Extraction failed. File corrupt"

Norton online support instructed me to remove all existing norton with following link :

Did that, then the instruction was to click a link to reinstall N 360. Did that but still get the "Extraction failed. File corrupt"

Okay so this is a pretty long story. Anyways I needed C++ Redis 2015 for a program for school to work, It kept failing so I went through the trouble shoots, repairing, deleting, reinstalling, repairing all previous C++ redist versions, restarting computer etc etc Then I went to the next trouble shoot which was to update windows. It would not update even after running the update reset tool and cc cleaner and at this point I was fed up and contacted Microsoft.
After about three hours of the techie screwing around in my pc she says lets try updating to win10. I say fine as long as I can downgrade back to win7. It upgrades, windows updates are working but god win 8/10 on a non touch screen sucks. So I almost immediately switch back to win7 after confirming that windows updates are working and C++ redist 2015 would download without fail. But apparently the techie deleted my catroot folders at some point into her troubleshooting, I stopped paying attention after like 2 hours. This of course corrupted my bios. Which gave me the amazing 0000000X6 Process1_FAILURE_INITIATE BSOD
At this point I had been up like 20 hours and stopped using my brain, she recommends I get into bios and switch the boot options to my Disc Drive and reinstall windows which I knew I wasn't going to do because I have like 100 hours of school work including my dissertation and thesis and 80% of my group project on it and am not willing to lose it. @ Dell's that is........... i researched as much as i could before contacting them, my issue being an application (Zcfgsvc.exe) (for my wireless connection) was running my processor at almost 100% almost all the time...i thought maybe a driver was missing...i did just do a total reinstall due to a hd replacement..
Anyway this is what he did....it was pretty neat..he took over my computer by remote access...went into my c drive from there he located my Zcfgsvc.exe file cut it and pasted it on my desktop....and said "there"....!!!! ya..thats it....leave it there!!!!...i dunno! ....it's not running up my processor, but, do i really have to have it sitting there all the time???....finding info on this subject has been really really hard...i can usually fix things myself, but this one was very difficult to find info on....at best i would get sites that would offer me a "reg scan" or reg cleaner.....is that what i need to do?.....any advice would be welcome...thanks...Joanne

Looking confused, he thinks for a second, the just starts typing "calculator" on the Desktop. After that doesn't work, he starts clicking around until he accidentally grabs the top of the screen and pins it on the side. He then clicks in the empty space and makes it to the Start screen. Then, he looks for calculator in my pinned things, and after no success, he then types "calculator" again and successfully opens the program. His first comments "well, it will take some getting use to, but it's no big deal." I then show him how the Start button actually is there, just hidden. He affirms that yeah it's no big deal, just will take some getting used to.

Later, he was watching me use my PC, and I downloaded the Wikipedia app and pinned it. After that, I put down the computer and played some Xbox with him beside me. He's very interested in history, so he picks up the computer, and goes into the Wikipedia app. He asks me how to search in the app, and I showed him how to use Charms. After that, he was using it as if he had his whole life. He searches some Wikipedia, then when he can't find what he wanted there, he goes back to Start (using the hidden button) and hit the IE icon (which sends him to the desktop) and uses it to search and find things. I have an HP Pavilion Laptop, Windows 7-64bit.
My WMP11 does the following:
1. It clones music titles...even in front of my eyes.
2. Music files disappear.
3. Titles are now assuming wrong names even though content remains.
4. My music files come from my Music Library. Those have not changed or cloned..

5. I deleted WMP11 and re-installed...but all the above errors returned.
6. My Library files are skewed. Music is mixed with Video and with Documents and all around. Why? I dunno.
7. My music library is around 25GB; but it changes with the losses mentioned in #2 above.
8. I tried RealPlayer but their format leaves a lot to be desired by me. Also, it keeps requiring Flashplayer and no matter how many time I download it, it asks for it again.
9. I am 80 years old, not very computer savvy and I'm blessed with Parkinsons. Music is my hobby.

I have just deleted @BIOS because I just read where it has no known benefit, I did this because my system is running is slow .

In Facebook the settings have altered so I cannot access the title part of frames to click on or the bottom of friends list to see the content,

Also the pages in general have this stupid advertising called Discovery that keeps coming up across the bottom of page

Also there is advertising that keeps coming up over the images of items for sale, this is adverting similar items
Can you please advise how best to get rid of this unwanted advertising and correct other issues please.

My 81 yr old mother, who I'm proud to say isn't afraid of using computers, mistyped a URL on May 26, 2015 resulting in a pop up message stating that her PC was infected and to call 866 250 6058, which is support.me.

She tried to call me to find out what to do but I wasn't available, so unfortunately, she called the 866 number and followed the instructions from "Angie".

My mother typed H H H ( don't know in which screen ), then clicked OK

She was then instructed to go to the support.me website, and was told to enter code 379855, and click RUN. She clicked RUN again, then OK and restarted her PC, which appeared to run normally without any errors or pop ups. She wasn't asked to pay for the service and therefore didn't provide any credit card info.

My concern is that she may have unknowingly installed remote access software from support.me.

I've told her to not use this PC but to use her laptop from now on.

I've searched online and the following link shows the webpage where the code is entered, which appears to be connected to the logmein remote access tool.

Short story - MS Support working to resolve issues started after restart hangs during the install process for Aug 9, 2011 Windows Updates.

The MS team leader on my account calls this morning requesting that she and the two other MS analysts be allowed to take over my Dell by Remote Access tonight and work hands on my system.

I use the involved PC mostly to support software I use when consulting to a US Agency. So I started with the Operations Manager. These are the items in place:
MS Support is on approved list for the government agency I work for as a consultant.
MS identity confirmed by my employer.
MS already under non-disclosure agreement with employer.
Employer had me install a program today that protects the files with their data in it that is stronger than what I normally use.
A clean boot has been done and there are no non-Microsoft services running
The installed program also requires me to click a button once per minutes to show I am watching and kind of like UAC will make me respond affrimatively to allow them to proceed to open any folder, run any exe, run cmd
Employer had me shred some files (temp, %temp%, some of their files, and some individual files using my software which meets Dept of Defence 5220.24-M(ECE) protocol

I need advice on how to secure my computers from the people I thought were Dell support. They took online access to my Laptop and netbook a Dell Inspiron mini 1012, runs windows 7 starter. The CPU is an Intel Atom N450 has 1gb of memory, I also have a Dell laptop my daughter gave me a few months ago. The dell is only a few months old.
The Dell M5040  AMD E-450 APU  Graphics Radeon HD 1.65. Memory 3 gb,  64 bit system running Windows 7 premium. I wanted to format the hard drive and reinstall windows 7.  I had trouble getting into the bios or into the boot to set the boot order.
 
I phoned a number I thought was Dell support, I got through to a very nice Indian chap who said he would sort all my problems out for me, and then said it would only cost £131.00.  The alarm bells were ringing by now but I had let him have remote accessto the Laptop thinking it was Dell (I know). The company is called Techvedic, they said I would have a 12 month “Technical support”. They put a document on Laptop. Only I really do not want them in my computer again.

I am the network administrator at our local volunteer FD & RS. Let me re-phrase that. I am the one who seems to be the most knowledgable person regarding computers so I was nominated to be administrator. I won't even pretend to be an actual administrator. I currently have our 3 pc's running XP Pro networked very well. They're talking and doing what they're supposed to. We have cable broadband leading to a Linksys router leading to the Dell server. All PC's are domained to the server. The powers that be purchased the dell server in an effort to get up to speed with the rest of the world and so now I'm teaching myself Active directory & users, etc... My trusting husband fell for the scam where a pop up window told him that there was a problem with his computer and to call a number pretending to be Microsoft. He called them and gave them remote access to our computer. He  paid the $300.00 to fix the problem. Of course it was not Microsoft he was talking to. It was a "company" called ProTekt. I came home right after the computer had to be rebooted. At the point that I came in stopzilla (presumably)  was waiting to be installed and the mouse curser was moving around the screen. I immediately turned off the computer. The person he was dealing with started calling and have called a few times since but I have not picked it up. We immediately drove to a safe computer (30 min drive) to reset all important account passwords. I called my credit card company and have also put a fraud alert with all credit reporting agencies. I disconnected the computer from the internet and took a look at what they did:
 
They uninstalled my virus software and installed what appears to have been support.com , wisecare, malwarebytes and total uninstall 6 and stopzilla software.   You did a clean rollback?  Meaning restoring Windows OS to the before-the-phone-call state, correct?  If so, you're probably ok from that vantage point.  Did you also change your modem/router hardwire & wireless access password[s]?
  What kind of backup images are you making?  I'm hoping you are making OS-partition images and data partition images onto at least one if not two usb external hard-drives - at least bi-monthly.

When I installed Win8 on one computer I need a H.P. printer driver. So I went to H.P. support/download did not find the needed driver so I called their Tech. support. A friendly support guy looked at my system and told me my copy of Microsoft Win8 bought at Best Buy was not a legit copy, also my system had been infected and they needed to remove my Win8 clean my system and reinstall Win8. made me a deal of a reduced price of $250US I knew this was not right so I begged them good buy went to Best Buy where I have good friends in the Geek Squad. they got the needed driver and printer works fine.
Today my Netgear routher died, called Netgear to get my lifetime warranty. This also was a support in India guy said it would cost $39US to make sure it was the router I said thanks but no thanks. Took my old Netgear router back to Best Bye where I bought it three years ago and they gave me a new Netgear router. I needed setup help so called Netger as new user also in India guy was friendly looked at my system and helped me get it setup. Then he informed me my computer was under attack and my files were being read he could fix my system and protect my files for the small sum of just $85US. Well I was using a small backup H.P. computer on the Net. hardwired and it was almost never used. So I knew it was a India Tech. support scam again.

I cannot login to support.microsoft.com page, also I cannot access the "Microsoft Knowledge Base". I always get the error message: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. I run "Network Diagnostics for Win XP" and I got the message:"Windows did not detect any problems with your internet connection over HTTP and HTTPS, but was not able to make a successful conection over FTP. The most likely cause of this problem is that firewall client running on your machine is blocking the necessary FTP ports".
NOTE: In Advanced tab (in Internet Options) the "Enable FTP folder view" and "Use passive FTP" are checked. I use the Windows Firewall (on (recomended)) in Win XP Pro SP2.

Hey, You could try an alternative firewall, i used to find windows firewall to be quite overly obtrusive... my advice is Comodo Firewall Pro (its freeware)... But if you dont want to go down that route then i dont know what else is going on (you can always just try disable windows firewall and see if it [temporarily] fixes the roblem)...

My internet connection is broken (gasp...I'm on dial-up!) and there seem to be weird things about it. As I mentioned in the subject, I called Verizon support twice...and they gave up. So, I'll try hard to describe issues (I'm not that good at this), and if all else fails, maybe you could suggest a resource that can help. I was going to call Geek Squad until I read the reviews here.

Okay...everything was fine until we had a local blackout for a few hours. I don't know if it's related. Then the internet connection was gone.

I have a Dell desktop running Vista home preium...brand new computer. It's a westfell modem, and right now I don't have it connected to the router.

They had me do the typical turning off the moden, resetting, etc. Checked all the connections. When the had me do the DOS stuff a couple things happened. The address was wrong, and they tried to have me do a config/release. It said it had to be elevated, and they gave up at that point. I asked if I just needed to go into an administrator mode, and she didn't understand.

I realize you'll probably need the config/all stuff. If you do, could you tell me how I copy it from DOS?

Finally, I am fine about calling for help. If you don't suggest Geek Squad, who do you suggest?

hello to everyone!!

im working as a tech support agent for one of the biggest ISP in the US.. its a good paying job and also very challenging.. i use to troubleshoot internet connection issues for residential accounts (1 pc only) and for all other issues that i get, i browse for similar issues on the forums of this site.. well, most of them came pretty handy (esp for the security forums).. now, i got transferred to the networking department and im in a total loss!! i can do simple troubleshooting and install assists for new networking users but i really need help in issues like:
1. remote access/ port forwarding
2. invalid IP addresses on the wireless devices
3. file and printer sharing
i was browsing through all the topics but i cant find any.. if there is someone out there who can help me with this issue and give me some pointers on how i am going to do this in an easier way.. i would really appreciate any assistance..

Hi

The process svchost.exe maxes out my cpu after my computer has been on for about 2 days. There is nothing special happening when it starts running. I have used Process Explorer to investigate and it is only when i stop the service "Routing and Remote Access" that the cpu usage comes back down to normal. However, this messes up my internet connection so it really is not an optimal solution. I would really appreciate if anyone could help me with this!

2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".
3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local system account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic". Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.

I bought a new PSU, that came in the mail today. Once I started up the computer I discovered that my USB ports don't work. Last Friday when my video card died, my 4 year old broke the two front USB ports. The computer's manufacturer surmises this shorted out the back ports and now wants to replace the motherboard and case. Both are under warranty, thank goodness.

So now my conundrum, I didn't buy the new PSU from the manufacturer, but it is the same brand as my old one. Do I just send the box back with the new one (which lets them organize the cables ten times better than I can) or do I put the old one back in? Or do I send both? There is nothing wrong with the old PSU, it's just not powerful enough for my new graphics card, which is NOT leaving my possession!

I'm sure I'm over thinking this, I just don't want to be screwed over.

My computer has become very slow in loading programs such as Firefox. Once it is loaded it doesn't work smoothly as before. Not Responding message appears and everything stops working for a while. Scrolling also doesn't always work. Sometimes the arrow changes to the hourglass and stops working. After a while it changes back to the arrow again and so it continues.

Quite regularly I get the "script not working" message window in the middle of the screen with "continue" or "cancel" options. Sometimes it is the Shockwave plugin and at other times it is Google or other script. And often the end program command doesn't work. For the last few days, script error message for Internet Explorer comes on at powering up.

I have been thinking of reloading Windows but with no more Microsoft support for XP I don't know how I am going to get the updates.

I know the laptop is very old(2001) but I really use it mainly to check emails. Any help in resolving the above issues would be highly appreciated.

First off, All updates are available for Windows XP and will continue to be available till the end of time. There will just not be any NEW updates for XP. I just installed XP on an old computer 2 days ago and ran all of 142 Windows Updates.
As for your current installation, try running a Clean Boot. If this works then add one startup item at a time, restarting each time till the computer becomes unresponsive, then you know what the problematic program is.
Also, go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter, in the command prompt type a Y for Yes and reboot the computer. Check Disk will go thorough 5 stages and takes some time. It will check your HDD for integirty.

If this is your computer (http://www.lg.com/hk_en/notebooks/lg-X120-L), it has a VGA video output connector.

Your TV would need to have a VGA, DVI-A, or DVI-I video input jack. The TV would also need to support at least one of the video resolutions and refresh rates that the computer can feed to the VGA connector.

I had a company called Advanced Tech Support remotely tune up my computer. But they could not do it until I had Verizon come out and see why my download speed was only 0.43. Verizon found the problem and got my download speed up.After that ATS took my computer over for about 3 hours. Now all my downloads are fast and buffering problems are gone.
I think probably though. Just upping the speed would have fixed the problem. But I had already payed them So I let them do the work..
Here's my question. I watched them remove my "Revo uninstaller", my "Should I remove it" and my "Spybot" When I asked the representative why she said because they all have a bad reputation for Malware. Has anybody here heard this about these 3 programs.? I sure haven't. Unless you guys here at TS warn me not to I'm going to put them back. Especially since I like the way Revo gets rid of the extra crap. and Spybot has found things that MBAM and SAS didn't Thanks

Personally I've never had any "Malware" problems related to revo that I know of. I think (s)he just didn't like the program. I'm not familiar with "Should I remove it" & I quit using Spybot when they updated the program a few years ago.

version 5.1.2600 (media center) service pack 2.0 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz version x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6 current speed 1660 MHz

Let me start by thanking you for your patience as you read this. I contacted HP Tech support via chat numerous times to discuss general questions around some concerns I had regarding a "space issue" I was having. The "space issue" actually was caused by a surplus of photos I had in "MY PICTURES" which I thought I had removed after I burned them to a disk as well as video files located on another user profile.

Anyhow, I contacted HP support and was advised to do a "non destructive" recovery and was completely assured that this would resolve my problem and all files and applications would remain in tact unharmed. Well that was crap.

Once the recovery process was complete, all user information was gone. No user profiles existed on the login screen. I had to recreate a user profile. The recovery reverted everything to "factory settings", however all files were found on the old user profile which was located under "documents and settings" on the c:\ drive.

I also bought Amazon (for the free shipping) pre-order Upgrade and have gotten MS support already.

They are required by policy to troubleshoot to completion any issue, even elevating to a research team that communicates with the developer teams, as long as customer is cooperative.

As with any tech support you may get a bad agent or someone having a bad day. I always politely hang up and call back.

In the past by being appreciative and eager to learn, I have gotten a full education in clean reinstalls w/o bloatware, virus hunting, optimization, etc. - worth far more than the price of the product.

Good day, Can anybody advise or guide me on above captioned matter? I currently use "Zuumedia", who incidentaly are good but their prices keep going up and up. Being a pensioner I have to watch the pennies and 120GBP seems a hell of a lot to what it used to be. I live on the west coast of scotland miles away from anybody who can help me so need some way of online support. Can you advise??

Consider all the options available. Sites like and especially this one can solve most software problems. Really thorough books are available. I just pulled one containing 1101 pages just on Vista from my shelf. On a per inquiry basis, any tech can "share" your computer. If you're uncomfortable working inside the box, there has to be local or shipping help available. Your current "service" can't physically fix hardware anyway. With all the money you'll save, you'll be able to afford the new and hopefully error free computer when this one bids adieu.

I hope somebody can help me with this, i would have done a search to see if its in a previous thread but i did'nt know what it would have been listed under.

Problem:
I had a desktop that was a wired connectoion and wanted to give it to my kid, so i got a wireless network card and installed it. The card seemed to be working fine, but it would not connect to the internet. (it would hang on "aquiring a network address" then error out saying windows coudlnt connect..)
I called Belkin tech support who tried a bunch of nonsence scare tactics to make me believe my registry was corrupt and that i had a virus. end result- pay them money and they would fix the issue, AND i would be protected for some amount of time. I believe it is 30 days, 90 days, 6 months a year or even 3 years.

What they didnt know/ask/think about was that the router and network card were both brand new, and that the computer I was having issues with had a fresh install of win XP with paid antivirus program. However, unfortunately I did call the number, and when they wanted money I said absolutely not. Now, when I power up that PC, I get a pop-up that asks for admin password (not the Windows or BIOS popup). I tried command prompt, system restore, and reinstalling windows deleting everything but what was installed and personal files, and still the same popup requesting a password. I tried Esc, and cancel and enter, all not working. 
 
Any suggestions? Any help at all greatly appreciated

I support 2 labs where students log on to the domain. All the workstations are XP Pro. How do I copy a printer into "all users" profile so that everybody logging on sees the printer. I don't want to set the printer individually on each profile..

Log on as administrator, or yourself if you have admin rights. Add a printer as Local Printer and uncheck automatically detect, create a new port as Local port, where the port name is \\printserver\printername then just allow the wizard to complete.

I am having a problem with my granddaughters laptop. The anti-virus had expired when she brought it to me (I'm an IT guy). She was getting popups about cleaning her laptop. It had Optimize pro, My PC Backup, etc. installed (she's 13, not sure if she responded to the popups or not.

I've removed what I thought was junk, installed Microsoft Security Essentials and Malware Bytes, but I can't get either of them to launch and scan the laptop.

I have a friend who had a problem on her computer and she called her ISP Comcast for help since she uses their Norton anti-virus program. To make a long story short, she had to provide them with both her log in & email passwords and then they wanted to charge her $215 to clean her computer.
That doesn't make sense to me - I'm not aware of any reliable ISP tech support asking for passwords. I know they ask for permission to take control of a computer and then supply a service number the computer user has to enter. Is this something new that an ISP tech support asks for passwords.
 
She has changed her email password and I recommended to her to also change her log on password.

I believe that I posted the following in the incorrect heading "Software" when I should have posted it under hardware. Therefore I am posting it once again and hoping in desperation that someone will be able to help me with this problem. Thanking you in advance for any assistance!

Two weeks ago I purchased the Samsung Galaxy S tablet model: TS-700 with ?Kit Kat 4.4.2? which is exactly what I wanted. I ran into constant notification attempts by Samsung to get me to install Lollipop 5.0.2 which I do not want. I tried to evade these attempts but finally lollipop was automatically installed on my tablet without my permission. I turned it on to find the installation process in progress and a warning not to turn off the tablet. I hadn't thought to prevent this by disabling automatic updating. So I got blind sided by Samsung.
I now want to downgrade from lollipop back to Kit Kat 4.4.2 as I detest lollipop and it immediately started causing problems whereas Kit Kat was working like a charm.
Before attempting this, I am seeking a qualified tech persons knowledge, advice and instructions on the best way to do this. I am reasonably computer smart so I am confident that given precise instructions I can do it.

Hello,

It all began with a free space issue - after connecting numerous times to HP support tech, i was told to do a non destructive system restore., which i did, only to find my user profile gone, and all the dlls that run my applications no longer working. The space issues was from too many picture files, which i discovered my husband had uploaded about 1500 pictures of a friends wedding. so once i got rid of those pictures, the space issue was resolved.

After being completely frustrated, and a lot of research, I read to "copy over" my old user profile files from under "documents and settings" to the new profile i created.. which I did. I also did a disk clean up and defrag.. and evidently have deleted a bunch of things i shouldn't have. I never actually recovered the user profile.. the weird thing is... is that the picture i had chosen associated with the old profile i'm trying to recover.. was recovered. totally weird voo doo stuff going on in the background i guess. so now i want to scream. i guess i can delete everything.. i've backed up all the stuff that was under my documents. so no big deal, however it's the applications that i'm worried about. when doing the non destructive restore, it took me back to factory settings.. so my norton 2007 internet security was replaced with the 60 day trial version of 2006 that came with the PC (which was purchased in december 2006 and in march 2007 i got some freaky virus and the geek squad folks did a d...
