A: FAQ(23): Unpacking downloaded SoftPaqs

You can unpack a SoftPaq by running it with a few command line switches. To do this, open a Windows command box and refer to the following information:Unpacking a SoftPaq fileSp#####.exe ?pdf ?f<path> -s WhereSP####.exe is the Softpaq to unpack.-pdf is a run time switch that overrides the build parameters.-f<Path> is a run time switch that overrides the default path set at build time.-s instructs the package to unpack in silent mode skipping the welcome, license and directory screens.EXAMPLE:At the command box prompt (with Administrator rights to prevent access issues) go to the directory where the SoftPaq is and type the following: sp59909.exe -pdf -fC:\SWSetup\sp59909 -s

From time to time I use the "HP SoftPaq Download Manager" (HPSPDM) to update the soft of my EliteBook 8770w machine. But lately few SoftPaqs are causing me troubles:  Whenever I try to install them, the "HP SoftPaq Download Manager" forces me to restart the PC and after that the SoftPaqs reappear in the HPSPDM with status "Newer version available" ! How to find out what's going on? Does the HPSPDM creates some kind of a installation log?  P.S. This issue is not vital for my PC, but drives me crazy that such a "enterprise software" behaves like that.

Hello, I'm dealing with this issue since Monday and it's driving me nuts. I want do deploy the newest driver with the SSM for our Notebooks 820 G2 via USB Drive. Downloading and preparing seems to work with the SDM. I prepared the SSM and the USB Drive like it's said in the documentation, but when I start the SSM in update mode the SSM window pops up and closes without any error. It seems like the SSM doesn't find any packages to install and just finishes without doing anything. Becaus of that, I wanted to get a logfile, but the SSM seems to just ignore my demand. The downloaded files look like this:  I wonder why there is no *.cfg file but a *.html file in the folder. The latest documentation I could find was published in 2014. In this documentation there is no word about any *.html files in the directory, but there should be a *.cfg file.  This is my commandline entry to start the program: E:\HP\Treiber\SSM\SSM E:\HP\Treiber\SSM\SSM.exe /accept This is the commandline entry to start the program and create a logfileE:\HP\Treiber\SSM\SSM E:\HP\Treiber\SSM\SSM.exe /accept /debug /log:"E:\HP\LOG"  I'm pretty helpless and have no idea what to do next. Hope you guys can help me :-/  Sorry if there are any mistakes, my english is a bit rusty. best regards Jan-Eric

A:SSM does not install preloaded softpaqs

I'm also having the same problem but only with our brand new HP EliteOne 800 G2 PC's. I've updated SSM to include the drivers I'm missing (which is plenty) and launching SSM as a part of my Windows Deployment (WDS). I'm installing Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit also. Every other HP PC make / model I have runs SSM fine. Almost all the drivers are typically installed and the EliteDesk 800 (G1) and EliteOne 800 (also G1) both get all their drivers fine via SSM. I also include a "Extra_Drivers" directory within the SSM Softpaq's there I will typically expand missing drivers. After Windows runs a Windows Update (part of WDS), these extra drivers are installed. I've had to update the HP Softpaq Download Manager to 4.2.4.0 to capture the "HP EliteOne G2 23-inch Non-touch All-in-One PC" which is great.  SSM runs fine because the first component is executing Diskpart that creates the hidden partition for HP recovery. This runs perfectly on the EliteOne 800 G2, but NO other driver softpaq's are installing and the same missing drivers remain after SSM has finished. I always set WDS to reboot the PC after SSM has executed which is the standard task sequence I have built. If SSM reboots the PC then WDS returns an error.  SSM command being lanched by WDSstart /wait c:\windows\SSM\ssm.exe c:\windows\SSM /accept /noreboot /nu /nolog /to:600 /ti:"SSM executing from the Windows SSM Directory" Why are none of the new EliteOne 800 G2 softpaq's running? I've downloaded a large application (Quicken) in .rar format. I extracted it with Winrar and now I have 18 tidy little bundles of 15mb each in the intended directory. Bad news is I haven't the faintest idea what to do with them now. there aren't any .exe or installation files as far as I can see--just those 18 bundles. Can anyone straighten me out?

I'm trying to install Renaissance Starter Edition, but the program just unpacks the files somewhere, and doesn't actually start the installation routine. I tried it at work, and it started installing, but on my PC at home, it unpacks the files, then nothing. It goes that fast, I don't know what the files are, or where it's put them. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone
It's a long time since I don't write an article in MA but I decided to explore some important concepts to analyze malware.

"Understanding packers and detecting a packed file" is a topic treated by @kram7750 in this thread :http://malwaretips.com/threads/malw...ng-packers-and-detecting-a-packed-file.42356/

I will talk to unpacking
The manual unpacking is definitely the most complex to learn. Although a malware can be sometimes much more difficult by a packer, it is much easier to explain the theory behind a malware, rather than explain the operation of a packer. This is primarily due to two reasons. First, you need to have a unpacking knowledge of a wider number of arguments: it is not enough to understand the machine code and know that debugging. In addition, the term "packer" is very generic. The packer implement all sorts of anti-reversing techniques and even an entire book would suffice to explain them all in detail.

I will try to make myself understood even by those who don't have a clue what a packer. However, it is useless to deny that you have to engage, and not just to see this introduction. Do not confuse, even if there are other threads, this article represents the real end of our route. If you include the following, all the rest you'll learn without difficulty and it will update your knowledge base package. Here, we define the article on manual unpacking the culmination of knowledge. To write this introd... Read more

I recently ordered a new PC from ironsidecomputers and it didn't work when I plugged it in, I later pulled the front connectors loose replugged them and was able to get it running but the reset powered it on power button reset the system. I was happy but PC was in the wrong spot so I turned it off put it where it need to be and nothing I tried all other outlets then the one that worked previously but nothing. I referred to manual and seemed original set up was wrong but I'm not getting to work in the right set up. What am I doing wrong is it just power problem? I would be talking to tech but it's the weekend. A:PC has no power after unpacking

Sounds like to me the front panel connection is hooked up wrong, which could do some damage to the system over time. If your not comfortable taking it apart and reconnecting all if it, I'd wait and take it back to the place where you bought it and have them look at it and fix it.

I have just replaced my old desktop for a new one that comes with windows 7 64 bit. But not sure why ever since I started using the new desktop to unpack rars and especially rars with parts, both winrar and 7zip often have error messages like:

"Packed data CRC failed"
"The volume is corrupted"
"The file is corrupted"
etc.

For example, one of my family member who lives in Ireland wants to send me a bunch of videos and photos taken from a trip they went. He packed these bunch of files into three part rars and uploaded onto a file hosting website and so I have to download each one of them. I first tried jdownloader and downloaded them but couldn't unzip it. Then I tried to download in the normal way using firefox but still couldn't unpack. And I started to think is the pack corrupted?

But then I tried to use my netbook (with win7 32 bit starter os) and downloaded the files through this computer, it unpacked smoothly without a hassle. I then tried to copy the files I have downloaded using my new desktop to my netbook and try to unpack them there but again it saids the file is corrupted. That means somehow it's not winrar or 7zip's problem but the way my new computer writes the files into the hard disk creates corrupted files?

So what's wrong with my new computer? Even my old desktop won't have these problems. Is it because of the 32 64 bit difference? Perhaps my Ireland cousin packed the files with winrar 32 bit and i used 64 bit didn't work? Or ... Read more

Whenever I download a large archive, whether it's 7z, RAR format or some bin format (that's unpacked via provided installer), I always have problems unpacking.

What happens is that, while extracting, I receive errors about some files that are corrupted and cannot be extracted. The FUNNY thing is, if I try to extract the same archive again it says some other file is corrupted while the one that was "corrupted on my first try now extracts properly. I don't know how is that even possible.

1) I know that the archives I download/get from friends are not corrupted, and I can trust those sources.
2) I've tried basically everything, like re-downloading, trying with numerous attempts, and updating the software I use (7z, Win RAR, or Daemon tools for those bin archives I mentioned).

Any help? Thanks,
VAO

I'm wondering if your hard drive has some bad sectors. You might run a disk check program to see. Your drive manufacturer will probably have one.

My problem is that if u wanna unpack an exe file, could be a setup exe., then it will save the data in the temp folder (Windows drive), and my problem is that i made a patision (or however to spell that in english.. ) so i got 10 gb for windows, so if my windows ****s up i will be able to just reinstall without worrying too much for my files. (Programs like registery mechanic will often solve the registery prob.) Anyways, this means i don't have enough space on my c-drive, as i should have given it more ofc.. Should have given it 15 instead, as my programs are on that drive aswel... anyways! thats not the matter.. the matter is that when some exe. files wants to extract they want to extract huge amounts of software before installing, im talking about 1,3 gb + here, and i cant get that much space without deleting half of my programs or so.. SO what i want to know, is there a way to manualy unpack an exe. file ? Or is there a way to change its unpacking destination, so it won't save in temp.. thanks for all upcomming answer.

- Hans, Denmark.

A:Hard times unpacking exe files.

Change the place where it unpacks to the other partition you have for files, programs etc. This should be on the extraction wizard.

Hi guys, I have just recently upgrade my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7, but since then I haven't been able to install most games.

During installation, each game has a different error message but generally, the problem seems to lie in games that require unpacking large files, such as *.bin. For example, while trying to install Assassin's Creed 3, this message appeared:

An error occurred while unpacking: archive corrupted! Unarc.dll returned an error code: -7. ERROR: archive data corrupted(decompression failed)Click to expand...

or

Decompression failed with error code: -12. Bad CRC in the archive data0.binClick to expand...

Please help me, I'm going mad.

Computer's spec:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz (4CPUs)
RAM: Elixir DDRam 3 2GB x2
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
DirectX 11
Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D
BIOS: 9/24/9 Ver: 08.00.15

What I've tried so far:

Updated drivers of graphic card, mainboard, etc.
Ran as Administrator.
Installed in safe mode.
Tried installing these games in another computer (everything's fine)
Reinstalled Windows 7.
Formatted entire HDD, reinstalled Windows XP (now even Windows XP has this problem)
Bought a new HDD

You may have other Spyware issues. First you can disable the Firewall. If the Spyware program opens then it has it's own Firewall that conflicts with Windows. You should also download CCleaner delete temp files, run Registry Cleaner too. Then download malwarebytes run full scan delete nasties.

This help request might fit in alternate discussion threads, but this seems like the most logical place to post... these could be 2 separate issues, but it feels like they are connected to me.

Problem:
A - Unpacking any RAR, Zip, 7z, etc file - particularly large ones results in CRC or other unpacking errors 90% of the time. Sometimes a simple retry works, sometimes re-downloading the compressed file works.. sometimes nothing works. Anything over 1GB is almost sure to fail miserably every time (often fails on different files within the package.
(this occurs using winzip, winrar, 7zip)

B - Multiple game client crashes - Oblivion, Various MMORPG (WoW, LOTRO, many others) crash constantly.. if the computer doesn't freeze or blue screen, the error is 100% the client .exe file .. it doesn't happen just on strenuous load sequences or 'laggy' areas.. it can just happen sitting in the middle of an unpopulated area.. varies once per 1-5 hrs.. rarely goes 3 gameplay attempts without at least 1 crash.

Both errors have occured pretty consistently over the last 3 years.. i give up on some games that have more crashes than others.. and give up on some because i can never even unpack the game to play it.

first of all, hello to you all

as they thread title may allude; i am a little disgruntled at my first atempt to install my brand new genuine Windows 7 x64 Home Premium OEM

after the first 4 attempts at installing Win7 i managed to get around the installer asking for 'unknown device driver' by unplugging my card reader. I have been running XP x64 OEM for some time and have re-installed it at least 5 times and have never had any problems what so ever; if only the same were true for Win7!

having done some research it became clear that Win7 should take no more then 30-40 minutes to install; but here i am 23hrs later and it STILL hasn't even started installing yet; its still 'unpacking windows files' @ 99%...

has anyone else had this problem? if so, what did you do to fix it?

thanks in advance

A:23hrs - "unpacking windows files"

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Nice job on the system specs.

Sorry your having problems.
How long has it been at 99%?

We've made a list of questions which are the result of reoccurring incidents seen so far.
If you can have a look at these and give us your answers we'll be able to give you better suggestions.

Questions to use for help with Installation Issues

We have also seen people with AMD mother boards having these problems, try taking out all memory cards except one, if that doesn't work then move the memory card to a different slot and try again.

Do you have HyperTransport function settings in your BIOS?
There are two options in the BIOS Setup called K8 -- KN HT Speed and K8 -- KN HT Width, both are normally set as Auto. Change them to K8 -- KN HT Speed to 1x and K8 <-> KN HT Width to 8 8. You can change them back after the install.

If this doesn't work, then reply with more details and we'll try again.
EDIT:
Just read a thread where a guy with an AMD board was having similar problems said he turned off 'Cool 'n Quiet' setting (the feature that turns down the fan RPM). He also found a bad RAM stick by running memtest86+. After that Win7 installed with no problem. Might be worth a try.

Hi... I was wondering if anyone else is having same problem as me when trying to install the 32-bit RC. I have created a 50 gigs logical partition on my hard drive to install windows 7 on (i'm using Vista Home Premium on my Dell laptop). on installation screen i select the drive for the new installation and so it goes to the next screen where it shows a list of bunch of stuff that it's supposed to do. The first one is "copying files" or something along those lines which gets checked and so it moves to the second thing that is i believe called unpacking the installation files (or something similar). My installation "freezes" there as it shows 0% for about an hour or two and then it errors and cancels the installation.
any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers

A:Think I Downloaded Something, Help

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer I don't see any malware there. Some points:Do you have a bought license for Norton? Or did you get it for free? The reason I'm asking is, it's a really heavy app for an antivirus. You can install a better antivirus that's waaaay lighter and easier for the computer, and takes less ram and actually is more efficient too.So, I recommend uninstalling Symantec's products and installing AntiVir (That's the promotion license for AntiVir Premium -- 6 months for free. You can get their free edition here) or Avast! instead.Another valid point: when did you install Service Pack 3? There has been several flaws with it.. Some people have really bad problems with SP3, I seem to be one of the lucky ones with no issues. Did you notice the problems after installing it?Also have a read through THIS TOPIC.Finally.....Click Start >> Run and paste in:"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daftClick OK.Click OK to the prompt from Deckard's System Scanner.Click Scan.Checkmark every entry found.Click Fix.Let me know how you get on.

Is there any utility that will tell me after the fact who downloaded anything to me? In my case, it's probably an update of some kind. But it has already happened because I see in Networx > General > Today that sometime this morning about 600 mb was downloaded to my computer. Is there any record of the source of this download in Win7, Firefox or some utility I can use to discover today's download, and to maintain a log in the future?

Hello. I downloaded the new sp3 update yesterday and followed all the instructions and i was ready to restart my computer. When i did, everything went fine until after the loading screen it gave me a blue error screen. Since i needed the computer in working order, I used a pc recovery tool (pressed F10 when it started up) and did a non-destructive recovery which took about 20 minutes. Then after that was done i had to restart and do the windows first start up thing. Then i finally finished and saw that all of my custom features and files were no where to be found! All my applications and games that i downloaded are still in shape, but all of the custom features (like background, WMP playlists, Updates) were all gone. so is there any whay which i can restore my old settings? I need to have all my original settings as soon as i can please .

Thanks

Hi cloud366, it sounds like you have done a repair install. When you pressed F10, did you choose Last Known Good Configuration from the boot menu?

Also, check in C:\Documents and Settings for a duplicate profile. It could be that your original profile has corrupted and Windows built you a new one.

All those type of "custom features" live in your local profile.

I just purchased a new HP desktop, INtel core 2 Quad processor, 64 bit performance with 8gb of ram, 1 Terrabyte hard drive. It came with Vista home premium 64 bit edition. I had previously purchased Vista Ultimate for a laptop that no longer works. When I downloaded Vista Ultimate I put in the 32 bit instead of the 64.....I am not able to do a restore to go back to the way I purchased it. I am not very computer savvy. Can anyone please help??? Thank you. And what would be the down fall for keeping the 32 bit installed (somone had told me I wouldn't be using the full capicity of the computer) Thanks again.

32bit will only see 4gigs of ram and usually only be able to use abt 3.3 its also a bit slower depending on how you use it. when changing from one OS format (32bit) to another (64bit) it has to be a clean install.

Now about restoring you may have a backup there and available but since you are 32 bit and it isnt you cant use it. If you were to reinstall vista 64 it probably be available

system running : windows XP professional with sp3

okay, as the title implies, while surfing the internet a tab appeared in the firefox window that said "Updating..." but never showed/displayed anything. After that, I noticed the windows start/tool bar had changed from the XP theme version to the classic version. Then i noticed that there was no network connectivity. When I tried to look up what was wrong, the properties, rename, and delete options have been disabled from the right-click menu.
I received a message that there was attempt to update registry but whatever was done was restored, then my PC reboot.
what I've done so far:
I tried to boot using the windows xp CD but nothing happens. Windows eventually boots up, but I don't get any options to run repair or anything.
Used CA anti-virus for scan and found nothing (did this again in safe mode and still found nothing)
I did a search to see if I could find what was modified, it shows that all user accounts including a Helpassist?? account have been updated in some form or fashion so i don't know what else to do

I see svchost.exe, services.exe, and system taking up 50% of CPU occasionally but not sure what to make of that.

to get the internet started I tried to turn on some network services but all failed due to 'timeout'

Please let me know any ideas, or how to get started on trying to fix this problem.

thanks,
homero
other pcs are connected to the internet just fine.

When you say downloaded, if you've kept your Vista updates up to date you should have SP2 and IE9. Go to your Windows Updates and install and check in restore hidden updates for more installations.

If they are still present, then download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and while you are there grab the RogueRemoverFree as well. Hello

I have setup every application to "ask me before checking for updates",

Even when I am not using any brower, email or any opther application, I notice that my lights on my modem are blinking quite fast... that is something is being downloded. It has been going on for quite sometime.

How do I find out what is being downloded (or uploaded)?

I use
toshiba laptop

IE9
MS office 2010
Internet secuirity (antivirus, etc ...) from Bell
Thank you very much

A:How do I know what is being downloaded?

And you have no browser open? And check for new email only infrequently?

You could try disconnecting from the modem and see if any program complains.

In Network Connections right click on your connection and select Status. Watch the Bytes sent and received to get an idea of the upload vs download and how much.

Hi everyone,
New user to SevenForums.

For the longest time we did not have IE on our HP Smart Touch. We would use Firefox. Well, I needed to get IE 10 installed. I downloaded IE 10 from MS and installed. I made sure the Turn Windows Features On/Off from Control Panel had IE selected. However, after I went through the installation, IE 10 was not available. It is showing as an installed update to Windows but does not show in the Control Panel>Program and Features.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get IE running? or how I can check what may be disabling it?

I do not know how IE was removed and unavailable to begin with.

Thanks for any help.

Okay, I did a dumb thing. I actually wanted to transfer my Carbonite account to a new computer. It is a laptop with a 40 Gig of HD. I realized (perhaps too late) that I selected "Reinstall" instead of Transfer My Account" and that my Carbonite files were larger than the laptop could handle. Well I stopped the downloading of files when the computer said that it had no more room. Later the computer screen went black (actually light gray) and the lights were lit up showing that it was reading or trying to read the files it had. It never completed it's boot up.

I tried to go in and reboot it into a Safe mode, but it won't let me. Says it can't go into the Safe Mode.

So, is there ANY way to save my hide and get this back?

A:Downloaded too much... now won't boot.

Still trying to resolve issues with IE8. Looking at downloaded controls I see three instances of Java Plug-in. All installed at the same time when I installed the latest version of Java.

Is this normal? If I remove one (and then two) will it remove all of them? Should I just disable two?

Then looking at "run without permissions" I see even more instances of Java Plug-n.

I do want to keep Java Plug-in but wonder why I have so many of the same?

A:Three of the same downloaded control add-on

Those three seam to be the same. If it was my computer I would remove all Java and get a fresh download of Java. I think this might answer all your questions.

Hi. I have a mustek scanner to which I have had to download the software for (reformatted pc and now the original installation cd will not run as kids damaged it, BLESS).
This download is in five parts all of which I have downloaded into my own created 'downloads' folder on c: (they obviously are now 5 different files in this folder).
On the website I downloaded them from it stated 'download all 5 files from web onto pc's hard disc under same directory'. I did not do this as I didn't know what it meant ( thought I would play and work it out but I'm just too stupid).
When I click on first file it starts and then asks me to insert next disc because they are not in this said directory, all being separate.
Can I now make/find or whatever this directory and move them into it and how or must I first make/find this directory and and download them again directly into this directory and how?
Please be gentle with explaination/terminology as as you have prob' gathered my pc skills are more than limited!!
Your help gratefully recieved, Steve.

A:Downloaded driver

Hi Steve1ramsey,
First of all, there is nothing such as "too stupid".
I would rather say that we all start somewhere.

If you remeber the name of the folder you created and put the different files in you only need to change the last part of the path.

Eg. You copy the 5 files in different folder, let's call them "Folder 1", "Folder 2", "Folder 3" etc.
Then you start the Setup from Folder 1.
Later it asks you for disk 2.
You can see the whole path to the Setup, like C:\driversfolder\Folder 1\
You just change "Folder 1" to "Folder 2" and then press OK.

That should do it. In other feel free to ask again
Good luck!

Hi everyone,

I have AVG Free 2013, which needed to be updated (i've since done this) and when closing Google Chrome, I got the message that avgui.exe was being downloaded. I did a little research, and most places seem to say it has to do with registry errors, but AVG had never done anything like that. Does anyone have any possible reasons for this? Thanks in advance.

A:avgui.exe being downloaded?

Hi -The process known as AVG User Interface belongs to software AVG Internet Security by AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o (www.freeavg.com).It is a Verisign signed file. The file is certified by a trustworthy company.File avgui.exe is not a Windows core file. The process can be uninstalled in the Control Panel.NOTE : avgui.exe is able to record inputs. Therefore the technical security rating is 10% dangerous. In the event of any problems with avgui.exe, you may want to do the following:Uninstall the associated program Go - Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove programs (Programs and Features in Vista and Windows7) > Delete > AVG 2013 or AVG 2011If this is bothering you, then you can replace AVG free with any of these Free Antivirus programs > >Microsoft Security Essentials (what I currently use)Avira AntiViravast! Thank You -

Hey all,

Sorry I'm new to the forum, hopefully this is the right place to put this.

I've just upgraded my Dell XPS 420 to windows 7-32bit Home Premium from vista and now any time I try and install a program from the internet (even things like iTunes or Firefox) I'm runnig into problems.

Once I've downloaded any set-up file I click on it and the user account asks if I want to allow the program access. Once I click yes it thinks about it for a bit and then nothing happens.

I've tried running them as administrator and in compatability mode. I've also tried unblocking them in the properties and even re-downloading and installing without any user account settings or firewall but nothing works.

I even thought it might be a bad install of Windows so I formatted my hard drive and tried again but still no luck.

Can anyone please help, my computers basically useless right now

Thanks

Hi and welcome

I suspect you have a DEP problem. Can you go into event viewer by typing event viewer in search. Go to the windows logs>application tab. A:downloaded to death.

You can't download anything that will help. That PC will not run Mass Effect 2; it would need a faster processor, which would require a new motherboard, and more RAM, and a better graphics card, which would require a new motherboard and new power supply to meet the requirements. So you actually need a whole new computer, one built/designed for gaming.

I just downgraded from Vista SP2 to Vista SP1 and by doing so, have somehow screwed up my downloads in both Firefox and IE8. Whenever I download in either one, the download results in a file that is 0 kb.

The strange thing is, Google Chrome somehow wasn't affected by this downgrade (if that's what caused this) and I can download files fine in that browser.

Can someone tell me what's going on here and how to fix this in IE8 and FF 3.5? I've already tried reinstalling FF and it didn't help at all.

A:Downloaded Files Are 0 KB

Why did you downgrade form SP2 to SP1? Try reinstalling SP2.

Just a little note, that IE8 came over with the latest updates from Microsoft and I downloaded it thinking that they improved it and ironed out all the previous problems with it, but they didn't! Big mistake!!!! I just recently went back to IE7 because there were too many websites that were causing me problems, plus my web printing was not working anymore for my HP printer and I found out that I could not print any of my cards in American Greetings!!!! I pay for that service and was very upset when I had a wedding to go to and could not print my card at the last min.!!!!! That was the staw that broke the camels back.....So, it was bye bye IE8, I am so disappointed in Microsoft for rushing this browser out to there knowing it has all these problems....Shame on you!!!!!

I have managed to get a-hold of something that is messing with my system. I'm hoping someone can help me. The first sign something was wrong was with McAfee. It notified me I wasn't protected. When I tried to turn it on it would turn off on it's own. I have downloaded several security packages since and scanned but none have found the problem. Now the computer is becoming more and more sluggish.

It's an intermittent problem and I have not yet seen a pattern.

I can work for 30 mins with no problem then phhht, the only way out is to hit the restart button on the case. Sometimes it's only minutes and then phhht.
All unsaved info is lost.

As an example I was replying to a post in this forum and it froze 4 times in the process.

After I have hit the restart button, most times it reboots normally but sometimes it says windows was unable to open and offers the safe mode.

There must be a conflict of some sort, has any body else had this problem?

I bought Easy Hi Qrecorder program a few years ago. It worked fine. I had to re-download to a new computer as the other had crashed.

I use XP home edition. The Easy Hi Q recorder is reputable, from Roemer Software. I redownloaded it to the next computer which had been recently cleaned out of my son's user account and all his programs and files.

The Easy Hi Q downloads fine and installs. But when I click on the execute file to start it, I get "DWGTrueView 2010 wanting to install instead, which was part of an Autocad program my son had, for mapping. I can't seem to get rid of this mix up. Then of course it can't find the "source" file from that autocad program since it has been deleted for months. I also tried a clean disk and defragmented after deleting all my sons files.
I just want my Easy Hi Q recorder to work properly and open up.

I just tried an XP repair using the XP disk. Still no change. And it took all afternoon to do this.

I recently installed Real Player. Since then, when downloading a .mp3 file in Internet Explorer, once the File Download box pops up, the filename is changed to .mpga format. If I just highlight the download link, the file will be named as .mp3. Also, I uninstalled Real Player, and this doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. Any ideas? I don't want to have to keep renaming or converting files every time I download an mp3.. I'm really looking for a solution to the entire problem so that they'll download as mp3's again. Thanks in advance for all your help!

A:Downloaded mp3 to mpga in IE6

Sounds like, when you installed Real Player you did not select [Custom] and check your file associations. Or did not use the Real Player option to always reset file associations if another program changes it.

Actually, before installing any ADDITIONAL player, you should check what files are associated whit your current player or players, and make sure the file association of the new player are not in conflict.

I always uncheck ANY association conflict in a new player, then change them later to the player I want to be default for the file.

According to a Google hit for MPGA, = Mpeg-1 Layer3 Audio Stream and that links to Winamp. Bet you have Winamp installed and it is over-riding the file association for mpg. You need to disassociate mpg from Winamp.

Hello, I have an HP laptop running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It's actually been relatively fine for me until the last few days. I was having some problems editing video files and couldn't figure out why, so I updated to service pack 2. Around the same time, although I honestly cannot be sure that it was because of the update, none of my downloads will work. I believe it happened once or twice before I updated my sp but now I can't download ANYTHING. It's bizarre. The entire file will download and the file will show download progress just like normal. But, once complete the file shows up as 0 kb and doesn't open. I've tried using firefox 3.5.3 and IE 8...both do the same thing. I have also checked my permissions and made sure that I am allowed access to all of the folders that the documents are saved in. Nothing seems to help.

I really don't want to have to format/reinstall windows since I have quite a bit of stuff I would need to backup. Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated. Thanks.

I downloaded a virus about a month and 1/2 ago. As soon as I opened the program I got a bsod " irqL_not_not_less_then_or_equal_to" then my laptop turned off. I tried to reformat before I tried to get rid of the virus. It did not work I had to restore using system Image. Obvious now that was the wrong thing to do. Well It got rid of the bsod's, but now I cannot run any kind of bootdisk because it will turn off about the middle of whatever I'm running. I've tried reformatting with win7 bootdisk, spotmau's bootdisk "Partition wipe, disk wipe", killdisk, hitachi disk fitness test disk. I've also ran scanners ; AVG anti-virus, Avira antivirus(which was what I was running and also scanned the program before opening it with avira.), Gmer, Sophos anti-rootkit, kaspersky anti virus scanner, mbr check, tdss killer, etc..... hah....just about everything I could download... And found nothing. So I've still got something screwing me up but none of these programs can find it... Possibly buried it after trying to format and using sytem image. Since it wont let me do anything with the boot disks is that in Would it be coming from MBR? Any help is very appriciated.

A:Downloaded virus, and I've tried everything to get rid of it.

Hi,

That does sound MBR related. You need to try and scan prior to Windows loadup. To do that please follow these steps:

1. Download and burn the F-Secure ISO file to a CD using something like IMGBURN.
2. Turn on your PC, then enter the BIOS before it has a chance to load the Windows OS.
3. In the BIOS, make sure the CD/DVD drive is first in the boot sequence.
4. Insert the F-Secure bootable CD into the CD/DVD drive, and boot the PC.

The PC will now boot using Linux. F-Secure will then update its anti-malware database (ensure you leave your ethernet cable plugged into your router/modem). Follow the prompts to do a scan of your system - it may take quite some time.

Make a note of the malware that it finds, and post the names here as we may need to do some additional work depending on what it finds.

Note that if some critical system files are infected, F-Secure deletes them, and your system may not be bootable. In this case, you will need to do a clean Windows install, preferable after a secure wipe of the hard disk. Make sure any critical data is backed before scanning.

Regards,
Golden

whenever i download anything from the internet and when i open it .it says me to accept.i accept.then a shield like symbol appears on the task bar and when i click it its gone.plz help

A:cant open anything that is downloaded

Koushal,

I'm afraid that isn't very clear which is probably why you did not receive an answer. But it sounds like one of two things is possibly happening... either the file you have downloaded and are trying to open is being blocked by your anti-virus, or by your firewall. Or if by "open" you mean you are trying to install it, it could be you don't have admin rights to install, so it's a Windows UAC 'shield' you see.

To increase your chances of getting help, I would suggest taking a screenshot of the 'shield' if it sticks long enough, or of the msg you see right before the shield appears.

Can I ask a really stupid question?
It's about locating downloaded files. Not the ones where I select save and then select a folder but the ones which don't offer that. For example right now Java is downloading but the files are not going where the existing Java files are (C:/Program Files/Java).
My question: how can I find out where files have downloaded to?

A:Where is that downloaded file?

If you know the name of the file, even partial name. You can do a Search. If you only know the extension, for Java it is .jar or .idx, you can search using a wild card (search: *.jar) Java files are stored under C:\Documents and Settings\yourprofilename under .java, .javaws or jpl_cahce folders. Be sure you are showing Hidden Files and Folders.

I had an issue with my laptop (Dell Inspiron) where this black screen claiming there were no bootable drivers would come up immediately and I couldn't even get into safe mode or anything. I figured the best thing to do would be to reinstall Windows XP and just start from scratch... After scrounging around everywhere I found a dusty Windows XP CD in the house and installed it, but the screen looks way different than the way it is before, like something was amiss with the screen resolution? At first I thought I had downloaded an older version of Windows by mistake as even some of the icons looked different, but after speaking with a more computer-knowledgeable friend he claimed there aren't really any differences between XPs.. And also that when you reinstall XP all your drivers are lost - which probably explains why I have been trying in vain to connect to the internet to no avail. I don't think I have all the necessary installation CDs and am pretty clueless as to what to do. Should I just bring it to a professional and have them redownload everything for me? Thanks in advance.

A:Re-downloaded XP... now all the drivers are gone

It is easy to do yourself, no need for a professional.

Simply go to http://support.dell.com and click in the center where it says "Drivers & Downloads" "I'm looking for drivers and downloads"

From the next page it will ask you for your DELL service tag or model #. Once you pick that you will need to make sure it has the correct operating system listed (XP, VISTA, or Windows 7) and it will show all available drivers for your computer.

Alternatively, if you scrounge around some more, you may find a cd that should have been included in the original packaging that will contain all the drivers. It sounds like, at the very least, you are missing the video drivers. You can access the Device Manager using any of the methods below. The device manager will list all hardware installed and will show devices that are not installed properly with either a red X or a yellow !

A few days ago I accidently downloaded a virus. I clicked on the download button, instead of the download link. The download button was a virus, when I opened the file, it proceeded to download many unwanted programs to my computer. Some of the symptoms my computer is having are:
-File keeps popping up on my desktop named, "Continue Live Installation"
-That same file opens on its on several times while im on the computer. I Close It and do not continue with the installation
-Almost everything I click on makes ads pop up in new windows.
-Their are ads all over websites that would normally not have ads (ex. Youtube, facebook)
-Computer is generally slower
Those are my problems. Things I have done so far are:
-Immediately uninstalled unwanted programs via control panel
-Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and got rid of anything it found
-Ran RKill and JRT
-Ran Hitman Pro and got rid of anything it found

After this I am still having all the problems listed above. I hope someone can help me out please!!! This is a work computer and I haven't been able to do any work all week .

Hello

I downloaded a program that was marked safe by Norton. However it downloaded some malware with it and changed my home page to delta search, as well as blank tabs to delta search. The computer program processing and internet speed has slowed down so I suspect more programs (malware/viruses) have been downloaded. Also, five programs were downloaded - Browser Protect, Delta Chrome Toolbar, Delta Toolbar, Gorilla Price, Yontoo 2.51. Additionally a window that won't go away keeps coming up with "BrowserProtect.exe has stopped working". Finally, the above five programs are running processes - when closed in Task Manager (windows vista) they come back - hence I think they are malware.

I was cautious about just deleting the programs installed listed above as I've had damage done to my computer previously when this happened about a year ago. Additionally I don't know how to stop the message above reappearing. Also, as mentioned, I think I have additionally (undetected) malware downloaded.

I've run a Norton Scan but it has only detected tracking cookies and deleted these. Nothing else is detected, and the latest virus etc. definitions were downloaded prior to starting the scan.

I've added the logs requested in the "read this before posting" file as attachments as the previous post I attempted was deemed too long (i.e. over 300000 characters". Sorry - I hope this is ok, otherwise I can re-post them individually.

hello all;
heres a good one for the gurus.
i am running an hp compaq dc5850 sff. i have two hdd. one with all my America's Army stuff on it. on one i have the deploy client and game but nothing else that pertains to AA2.
so i decide to start to set up AA2 on the vista hdd as it is on xp hdd, the first thing i do is go to my maps website of choice and start to download the user created maps i like. everything looks good, i choose the correct directory and file and even hit the open folder button to make sure the map is in the right place and it is.
now the good part, i close everything up and go back to the map to make sure it will start and play correctly and it is not there, i search for it from the search window at start and search tells me the closet it could find was the same map but on the E drive, which is where the xp hdd is when i boot vista.
any ideas?

What happens if I download and install an application TWICE? I am looking at a vendors suggestion. I am having a problem and the vendor suggests that I download and install WINDOWS LIVE MAIL. I think I have it installed already.
1-how can I tell if I have it already?
2-what would happen if I downloaded it and I already have it?

My OS is Windows 7

A:downloaded and installed TWICE!!

If you already have the software installed, when you run the install program it will probably have the option to "Repair" or "Modify".

Now, if you do download a newer version, there is a possibility you can have them both installed at the same time.

Hello. Thank you for offering this forum of help! I have run Malwarebytes, Spybot, spyware doc, and Auslogics.

Downloaded new IE 9 yesterday. Click on IE 9 icon but IE 9 does not start. I read that one problem may be registry, missing files from older IE, or spyware, so saw using Hijack This as a possible option. I notice right at the start it states "MSIE: Unable to get Internet Explorer version!"

Thank you for any suggestions you can offer. I really appreciate your knowledge because I'd love to use IE 9.

Here is my log:

HI,I've got malware problems, I'm tired of paying mac bleepty, and heard about AVG.I downloaded DDS, but can't seem to down load GMR. I have vista home premium 32 bit running on a 64 bit computer, mainly because some of my old programs wouldn't run on vista ultimate 64 bit software. I've attached the two files requested.PaulActually, I have to add that Gmer downloaded but is trying to extract and doesn't seem to be able to. I tried getting task manager up to shut it down and try again but task manager gives a file error...I'm tempted to reboot and try running gmer again.PaulEDIT: Posts merged ~BPHi,I was finally able to run gmer in safe mode, and have attached the log file. Hopefully you guys aren't too busy. For the most part, right now I think I have a malware problem, where a program comes up and tells me I have worms, or identity theft and to purchase their software to fix the problem. Thanks in advance for your help.PaulEDIT: Posts merged ~BP

I downloaded a game called the curse of monkey island through a torrent.

i already own the game, but it was scratched.

Once i finished downloading it, It was of course in image file, so i ran it through daemon tools. Autorun worked and everything, but when i clicked on install the clock showed next to the mouse for a few seconds then it stopped and nothing happened.

Then i went into the main folder and clicked setup.exe and ran as administrator.. again nothing hapened.. Ive tried burning it to a disk too with no luck.

A:Cant Run A Game I Downloaded.

This game was released in '97. I doubt if it will even run on Vista. You can try compatibility mode

Hi,

I downloaded Windows 7 RC 64 bit and I'd love to install in on a partition on my PC ... only ... how do I make a bootable image of it?

I've downloaded ISOBuster as suggested at the Microsoft site, I also have MagicISO free version and Nero 8 Ultra, none of these seems to want to work for me.

I did a Nero copy of the image which apparently has nothing to do with a bootable image ... duh.

The MagicISO seems like it will work if I purchase it ... first things first ... can I do it for free?

The ISOBuster seems absolutely impossible to decipher it's "Simplicity"?

Can Nero make a bootable image?

Can anyone pray tell me what I don't know. I'm really eager to hear it.

Thanks,

John

PS I hope my dumbness is only temporary!

A:OK, I got Windows 7 RC 64 bit downloaded.

Have you tried Imgburn?

I know you are saying he made an error ..... I've seen that dialogue box 1000 times the last 3 months and I know what I clicked on. I don't like Win 8.5 and I'll never trust those people again. I became so angry trying to stop that I damaged the computer (the plastic crap they refer to as a case has no decent access .... it's your computer and access should be easy).
The display is fine but is now upside down ..... does anyone have a fix for this ? 2) How do I get this unwanted crap off my computer (it took me over 4 months to get my event record even close to not looking like a Christmas tree with no help from MS or HP .... I don't want to go thru that BS again ) and restore it back to Win 8.5 ??
Thanks ....

Hello,

It sounds like you didn't uncheck the optional "Upgrade to Windows 10" update before manually selecting to install available updates.

You can use the method in the tutorial below to go back to the previous Windows.

Windows 10 - Go Back to Previous Windows - Windows 10 Forums

Once you are back to Windows 8.1, you can use the tutorials below to disable the "Upgrade to Windows 10" update and GWX icon.
