Dell XPS 410 with "unofficial Microsoft Vista Pro OS". is it possible to install Win 10?

Q: Dell XPS 410 with "unofficial Microsoft Vista Pro OS". is it possible to install Win 10?

I recently acquired a Dell XPS 410 . It came complete with monitor, keyboard, mouse and all connectors. I fired it up with no problems but a message came up informing me that it was necessary register with Microsoft. I entered the product key and a message came up that essentially said that this Vista pro was not an official product. Another problem is that the Hard drive had been reformatted.
I followed the instructions to purchase another key. While Microsoft was mulling this over I was able to connect to Firefox and peruse the internet. After waiting for at least 20 minutes for Microsoft to answer the unit shut down.
I would like to keep the PC and install Win 10. But Is it possible?

A: Dell XPS 410 with "unofficial Microsoft Vista Pro OS". is it possible to install Win 10?

Windows Vista reaches End of Extended Support in 5 months. There is no point in installing Windows Vista now. It is possible to install Windows 10 on that system but the cost of the full retail license may be more than the hardware is worth.

I'm using a command line batch file to backup files from my W7 Pro x64 machine to an external USB HD. Basically, "xcopy c:\......\my documents\*.*" "external HD". I couldn't get this to work until I truncated the source directory to "documents" instead of "my documents" [the name that the W7 installer specified]. While the batch file now runs and does what it's suppose to do, I'm mystified as to why the source directory needs to have a truncated name in the batch file rather that the one it has "officially." Any insight into this is appreciated.

A:question - batch file only works with "unofficial" directory name

Hello Robert,

"My Documents" is just a symbolic link to "Documents" for backwards compatibility for older programs that still reference "My Documents". "Documents" is the true folders name. It's the same with all of the "My...." user folders.

Hope this helps,

Howdy Y'all

I've decided that all these Unofficial releases are just not worth the trouble anymore, and I'm going to concentrate on this Official RC release until we go RTM or another official release from MS.

I have specific reasons for this also, the very foremost is that MS doesn't take into consideration any feedback from Unofficial builds since they aren't set up for proper debugging and can't be relied on for true feedback. They're released to a very specific group for testing fixes to specific problems, and can cause "known" side effects that need further work. So for MS to try and go thru feedback coming from the general public running builds that simply are not meant for machines outside of a specific testing criteria, makes no sense and can actually make it harder to sort out real issues.
And while I totally understand why so many people want to have a Free OS to use for a year, I also feel it's outside of the true spirit of what Beta Testing is all about. And I think we all know MS isn't "too" unhappy with all these leaked builds either as it's been pretty positive PR so far and free advertising for them.
But I want to get back to basics and test the He!! outta this thing, and help MS get this puppy out to RTM.

I got my copy of 7100 from my TechNet subscription on Apr 30th and just got everything installed last night.

I am hoping that someone can help me with what may be a complex question.

I have a spreadsheet, similar to the demonstration file I have attached. In it, there are a range of columns. One set of columns (A - D), shows a list of numbers that are references to items in a store, and it also shows their location in the store, so it acts as a floor-plan. The next column (E) lists those items again to show the dollar amount that those items have produced in total sales (F).

So, what I'd like to do is to add a conditional formatting to show me the "cold" and "hot" spots on the floor-plan so I can see where sales are most concentrated. I would assume that this would be done with a colour scale (using the range of values in column F to work itself out)?

Either way, the figures in column F would change weekly, so the relevant cells in columns A - D would need to automatically change when they're matching cells in column E - F change.

I hope this makes sense, as it's difficult to explain, but any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to reinstall XP Home on my friends Dell Dimension 2400 desktop.
He complained of the PC running extremely slowly. So I used the original dell operating system disc and re-installed XP Home.
I'm not joking when I say that it took 10 hours to load!!!!!!!!!
Also near the end I got the message "INF Install Failure" reason "The Handle is Invalid".
I have done a search on the problem and their are various answers but none of them conclusive.
People have mentioned clearing the VRAM and increasing the speed in task manager etc, but nothing conclusive.
I thought it might be the hard drive so I tried another one I had lying about and the same happen. 10 hours to load and the same fail message.
This problem seems to be very common with Dells??
I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Okay so my internet has not been running for the past couple of days and figured it was because my WLAN service (WLAN auto config) could not start

Had a look in a few threads and found nothing that could help me as I could not start NativeWifi Filter.

So I had a look in my actual network connection settings and found that nothing was installed

- No clients
- Services
- No Protocols

So I went through and installed everything and now my wireless stick picks up my connection

The "Client for Microsoft Networks" refuses to re-install itself

It gives me the error message "Could not add the requested feature. The error is: The system cannot find the specified file"

I don't even know which file it is to try and pull it from somewhere

If anyone knows which file (s) it is that I need in order to re-install "Client for Microsoft Networks" or a .cab file or whatever that would be greatly appreciated

I am running:

9800 Gx2
2 x 2GB DDR2 800 mhz
1 x 250 GB HDD
1 x 1000 GB HDD
Coolermaster silentpro 700W

If anyone can help that'd be muchly appreciated =)

I really need this fixed

Can't be bothered having to reformat - really a last resort for me

Even just the name of the corresponding .inf file(s) for "client for microsoft networks" would help if microsoft don't have a .msi installation file for it

I know it should never have been uninstalled/removed but I believe it was a virus that did it and am still fully removing it from the system >.<

cheers guys

This week I'm at my in-laws -- and doing routing maintenance on their computers and wireless network -- which includes thorough bumper to bumper scanning of their computers for a variety of things. While doing so with their relatively new Dell laptop I encountered the infamous and incredibly annoying Browser Helper [??] that Dell, in a deal with Google, is installing on new computers.

This "feature" is incredibly annoying when ultimately encountered during the loading of a legit web page. It takes what is presumed to be a mis-typed URL or one that doesn't resolve in the DNS (domain name server) -- including from embedded ad banners -- and instead of returning a standard DNS error, it redirects the browser to a Dell web page with Google search box and a host of click-through adverts. My ISP's home page (which I was using to get to my web mail) was triggering this before the web page could completely load -- as were some web pages on Newegg before that.

Took me a while to sort out what it was as Spybot S&D, Adaware and Hijack This didn't find it (at the least I didn't recognize it in the Hijack This log). Turns out it's not that difficult to get rid of -- but Dell/Google don't make it plainly obvious.

Here's the fix:

Close Internet Explorer (important!)
Fire up the Control Panel
Go to "Add or Remove Programs"
Look for one of these programs (they've used several different program names):

I've just installed Vista x64 and I'm a little confused on how to get ffdshow working (64bit version).

If I just install clsid's latest ffdshow x64 then it doesn't work. Even if I switch media player to 64-bit (eg. unregmp2.exe /SwapTo: 64, or something) then it still doesn't work.

Also, does the Haali Media Splitter work? It doesn't seem to work at all in Vista x64.

Thanks for any help!

Well, a Codec is something that you install to use a certain type of video file, such as a codec is needed to play DVD's on your computer. I would try installing it, and see if it works then.

Haali seems to be a virus from what i know about it. Stay away from that...

I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. Just to be absolutely sure, I did a restore of a previous image of Windows 2000 and the problem went away again. I put Vista back on and the problem came back. So, this is strictly a Vista problem.Click to expand...

I have had the same problem with every Vista system I have used and every flash drive (note this means SSD NAND flash not HDD's or card adapters). AS the last discussion degraded into useless questions about hardware and other OS's let's get a confirmation that someone out there actually has a flash drive that turns its activ... Read more

A:Flash drive's "active" light doesn't turn off in Vista when "safely removed"

have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

I'm running Windows XP SP 3. I have fake "Security Center Alert" popups and "Security Center" popups. A program called "Malware Defense" has also seemed to installed itself onto my computer. And I've just noticed porn icons appearing on my desktop. It's also disabled my Avira software.

GMER doesn't seem to run. I've clicked on it a couple of times but it doesn't seem to do anything. The DDS logs are attached/follows.

Let's try this version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked Sections
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

1st noticed when I plugged in my iPhone & instead of the ususal little popup box asking what to do with pictures (can't recall what it's actually called) it now comes up with New Hardward Found.

The iPhone syncs ok with iTunes as the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" is ok in Device Manager & I can transfer music & videos etc

However the "iPhone" shows an exclamation mark in Device Manager - which is the camera drivers, meaning it doesn't show as a drive in My Computer.

Whenever I plug my iPhone into the USB it always comes up with new hardware found & tries to locate the drivers, it does this ok but when installing them it always come back with the message "access is Denied" I have tried reinstalling them from within Device Manager as well but get the same message.

I have also plugged in a USB card reader previously unused on the laptop to check if it was just my iPhone & again it finds it as new hardware & tries to install the drivers but again comes back with "Access is Denied" So it's not related to just my iPhone, it looks like is related to USB devices.

I have tried using a different USB port (There are 3) one of which has the mouse plugged into & the mouse works ok, the other has a bluetooth dongle in it & that works ok as well.

I have turned off User Account Control & this has made no difference.

I have got Avira & Comodo Firewall installed & have also... Read more

I've been trying to fix this since Friday and everything I've tried doesn't work. I've even tried using a USB. Please, Help is extremely appreciated!

Hello folks,

Couldn't really tell from the Repair Install tutorial, so which retail version of Vista do I need to purchase, so that I can perform a repair install, via "upgrade" of Vista? As I look at my OEM Home Premium disk, it has the options to install ALL versions of Vista, so does that mean I could buy the cheapest retail version, use it and perform a repair install of my OEM version, by simply selecting the correct OS as per your "Repair Install" tutorial, and then go from there?

Basically, I would like to have a "God" mode DVD, that allows me to a)perform a repair install of existing Vista installs, and/or b)perform a clean install, and to be able to do a) or b) simply by telling the installation process which version I have (Home Basic, Ultimate, etc.), and whether the copy is retail or OEM.

I thought this is why Microsoft WENT to the DVD that would allow all installs, simply by selecting the right OS and OEM or Retail. Guess not.

[Note: I apologize in advance for the second-hand information... I will be seeing this in person in the morning, but thought I might go armed with some insight from you all. TIA!]

A daughter of a friend just bought Win7 Pro x64 from her university bookstore, and when she put the DVD into her laptop drive, she is greeted with a "wrong version" or "incorrect version" error message. She tells me she is running Vista (I am assuming x86) and that she has ~4GB of memory. Has anybody ever heard of something similar happening?

She told me that she has almost all of her info on an EHD, so I told her to backup whatever else she wanted to keep off of the HDD and when I visit tomorrow we will attempt to do the install, most likely a custom install for a fresh start (laptop ~2 years old).

Since I have read in several places here on the forums that the key included with the disc is good for both x64 and x86 versions of Win7, if it turns out that she has <4GB of RAM, is it possible to install the x86 from the disc? If so, is it easy to locate? If not, is there someplace we can dl it from? She tells me that she uses it mostly for Office (reports, presentations, etc) and used to run games on it (not sure what type), so I don't know if she would "need" x64 unless she has 4GB+ of RAM, right?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. If there are any specific questions I should be asking of her or things to look for when I am in front of the lapt... Read more

as far as i understood you entered the Key that came with Windows 7 DVD, if so then she should go back to the store, cuz the key is wrong and ask for at least trying to install it infront of her. and for running windows 7 smoothly you need at least 2GB ram, Core 2 Duo processor with 2GH frequency and 3 MB L2 Cach, in this case it will run smoothly.
Now a starting fix will be: Check if the processor is compatible with x64, also when is the message appearing after doing what?

The same happens with Windows 7, the screens differ a little, and I think the waiting times between these screens a even longer, but it's the same deal

Hi, is there an existing technique that can make me install Windows Photo Gallery, not the one with the Windows Live Essentials thing???? I am using Windows 7.

I installed Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Movie Maker many months ago but I am more satisfied with Windows Movie Maker 2.6 and the Windows Photo Gallery that came with Vista. I hate the Windows Live thing cause it also comes with stuff like Windows Skydrive Upload Tool and Windows Sign in Assistant.
Windows Live Photo Gallery is more laggish than Vista's Windows Photo Gallery. And I don't even like how Windows Live Movie Maker works and looks.

So please, is there some way I can install Windows Photo Gallery on Windows 7 without Windows Live Essentials??? Thanks...

A:Install Vista "Windows Photo Gallery" ?

Hi Vertex,

As you've stated, Windows Photo Gallery came bundled with Windows Vista. There's no place to download it as a standalone program. You might be able to copy the .exe and appropriate files from a Windows Vista computer, but there's no guarantee it'll work in Windows 7.

I had Vista home premium installed on a PC, it got infected with Malware so I had to do a clean install, I did this following a format.

I installed SP1 then went to install SP2 but the install did not run, instead I got an error box saying "Unspecified Error" there was no error number.

I went thorough the whole process again including downloading the SP2 install file again but I got the same error.

This PC has only one hard drive and is not yet connected to the internet.

Hopefully I can get some help with this.

I have already searched the forums and while people have had this error it has not been under the circumstances I have and I am sure lots of others have.

I created a USB boot drive with windows vista on and attempted to install on a laptop with a standard sata drive. It is picked up the in the setup and when I reach the screen of "where do you install windows?" I get the above error.

The problem seems to be as I understand it that the first boot priority is a USB drive and the creators of Vista put in place a rule where only a CD drive or similar can have a higher priority than the disk you wish to install Windows.

On the microsoft support database the article 938984 states that this is by design. Is there a way around this? I have tried the following methods...

1. Burning Plop boot manager to disk and booting to usb through that. Still same message.
2. Used the Diskpart method to create the original USB. The method and USB works perfect and I have also had sucess with Windows 7.
3. Used method 2 on the hard drive I want to install and booted from the hard drive still the same message.
4. Tried making multiple partitions on the drive and installing to them.

The reason I need this on a USB medium and not DVD is...

1. The Vista ISO I have is 7gig big (Both x86 and x64 all versions updated to SP2) (I am going to get Duel Layer)
2. I refurbish laptops and so I am installing different operating systems and having the reliability of a USB drive is amazing.

I recently wiped my entire computer and restored it to its original factory settings because of the Vista Home Security virus and my computer was several years behind on updates. Then I updated my system to the SP1 then the SP2. I just glanced at my start menu and it says that there are 90 important updates to install and 4 optional ones. Is this normal?
One the update says: A security issue has been identified that could allow an authenticated remote attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft.

A:"Important" updates to install on vista?

Check Computer properties and make sure that it says you have SP2. That does sound like a lot of updates, but then there have been some almost every "Update Tuesday", so the number may vey well be quite high.

You may not want to download and install them all at one time, however. Pick a bunch and install, and then some more later. It's not likely that problems will arise, but if you have smaller batches, you'll have an easier time finding any that cause trouble.

Then, be smart. After you get it all set up, back it up. Your hard drive will fail, more infections will come along, and you'll be doing this all again if you are not prepared. Periodic updates to your backup will keep it recent and you can keep the first one as your "factory restore". You can even merge your restore partition with your main one for more space and make an image of that for your "factory restore". Since it will have all your programs, updates, and files, it will save you a lot of time for recovery.

Free drive backup software (imaging, cloning, and archiving - backups can be created on a second hard drive, internal or external, or on DVD's, or BluRay disks. One BluRay disk will hold most peoples' entire system drive's backup at 25 GB's using compressed images, 50 GB's double-layer):

Is the time to "Upgrade from vista to 7 supposed to be wayyy longer then it would to do jsut a clean install? (For example, hanging at 18% for a while while installing during upgrade)

(posting this since i cant get any replies to a previous topic)

A:Install time difference between "Upgrade" and "Custom"

The upgrade process will always be longer, and sometimes considerably. The upgrade process has to move/relocate previous files and keep certain registry entries based on software already installed. Did the upgrade eventually complete? (it's a silly question but you could be dual booting). If not then it could be a bad burn and your systems is taking it's time trying to read the install files from the DVD.

The following was displayed in 'Automatic Repair' on startup:

"The operating system couldn't be loaded because a critical system driver is missing or contains errors"
"amdkmafd.sys" "0xc000007b"

I had installed the new windows 10 anniversary update (1607) and after finally sorting out everything to my liking I decided to boot up Radeon Settings to see if there was an update for the driver from AMD.

I was greeted with a message saying that the AMD driver was either missing or wasn't working properly and that I should go to AMD to download and install the correct driver.

Obviously confused as to why it would be missing or had errors I continued to download AMD's auto driver detect tool and ran it.

In the 'checkbox' stage of AMD's auto detect tool I saw that under all the items was a message saying that no version of that item was installed which I found rather weird that the drivers don't exist and the culprit initially points to the windows update I just completed.

I continued with the install and it was at that point when I experienced the BSOD.
The computer didn't restart after the BSOD so after some waiting I restarted it manually.

It then booted into Automatic Repair and the obvious route after the computer won't start due to the missing or corrupted system driver would be to use a recovery disk or USB.
Sadly I have neither.

My computer that had been running the Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium since early 2009 had become an appliance:  It worked every time it was turned on and it handled every network transaction that came through my DSL line.  I had set the "Windows
Update" program to check for updates periodically, every month or so, and then to inform me when ever any update was available.  I could tell when the "Windows Update" program had been checking for updates, as the CPU usage went up to 100
percent with the used memory amount "sawtoothed" up and down for about 15 to 20 minutes.   The "Windows Update" then would tell me about the available updates and it would ask whether it should load any of those.

This  worked until about January 2016.  At that time, the "Windows Update" CPU usage would stay at 100 percent for more than an hour.  After that, it gradually got worse:  Around June 2016, it held the CPU at 100 percent usage
for about 14 hours.  In August 2016, the CPU is held at 100 percent usage by the "Windows Update" for more than 45 hours with no end in sight.  It did find some updates to load, but it would not load them as the CPU had no time to do that.

"Windows Update" is currently holding the CPU at 100 percent load  this every time the machine is booted up until all of the updates are loaded and it can not do this as the C... Read more

Acquired an hp pavilion lap top at a garage sale, real cheap. Did have Vista Home Premium but it's shot; "bootmgr missing", no factory install disk for Vista, no recovery disk, no restore points etc.. Did get a nib Vista Home Premium with it, though. Hard drive tests passed and memory tests passed, just does not boot. Since I got the nib Vista I'd rather go with a brand new "clean install" rather than get a replacement disk from hp, it might still not work, and god only knows what might be on that drive; all the needed drivers for the machine can still be downloaded from the hp website. Now, the last install of Windows I did was back in 98 and I'd be a novice when it comes to installing Vista. Any suggestions and comments would be appreciated.

Hi Jerry,

I'm not sure what you mean by nib Vista. Could you please explain what you meant? It can make a difference on how you will need to do a clean install of Vista.

I have, probably, a rather unique situation. My motherboard is an Abit AV8 Third Eye with two 500GB drives on it. I also have 2 320GB drives on a Sil3114 PCI SATA card. My partition layout is as follows.

---> 32MB /boot (primary)
---> 215GB Windows XP (primary)
---> 104GB Windows Vista/7 (primary)
---> 1GB Linux Swap (primary)

---> 40GB Arch Linux (primary)
---> 40GB Ubuntu (primary)
---> 40GB OS test (primary)
---> 200GB /home (primary)

---> NTFS Storage (primary)

---> NTFS Storage (primary)
All of the partitions are layed out and Windows XP is already installed. When I go to install Vista (or 7, same error) I load the Sil3114 drivers from USB, then try to format the 100GB Vista partition and it says "can't format partition" with the error code 0x80070057. If I try to install to the partition without formatting it just says it can't copy the data.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit: By the way, I can't switch the 320's to the motherboard controller (which would probably simplify this), because my Samsung HD322HJ drives don't work with the VIA controller.

A:Vista Install "Can't format"

I don't like to reply to myself, but I seem to have lost the edit button...

Anyway, if I manually format the partition as NTFS (with gparted) the install fails saying "cannot copy files." I suppose the drivers could be bad, but the same ones work for XP and say they also support Vista. Vista recognizes the driver (as unsigned) and sees the HD with it (obviously). I acquired them from the link in the first post.

I've got 4 SATA hard drives which all worked properly before I installed Vista 64. I now have 3 that Vista recognizes. The missing drive is a 320G WD SATA 3.0 drive. The "missing" drive shows up in the BIOS and is listed under the device manager. The device manager says the disk is working, and when I tried to update the driver I got a message that the drive was already up to date. The disk does not show up under disk management. The data on the disk is extremely important to me so a reformat without saving the data is out of the question. Any ideas on getting Vista to play nice with my 4th HD?

Thanks in advance!

Currently I have Win XP Pro x64 installed. I decided I wanted to format my main hdd and do a clean install of Win Vista Home Premium. I boot from the DVD, it goes through the "Windows is now loading files.." and "Microsoft Corporation" progress bar screens to reach the fancy blue/green/white background. I assume there should be a window of some sorts in front of this background, but there's not, hence the problem.

I tried letting it sit at this state for about 15 min but no go.
I also tried reinstalling my video drivers in XP and using just the default windows video drivers but still no change. I am completely stumped on what is going on.

I'll take a picture of the background it sits on in a sec I suppose...

I recently got a student edition of W7pro and was so excited to say good by to vista, after the custom "clean install" i was surprised to learn that my original back up disks with all of my apps would not be recognized nor the separate partition. I contacted HP and they said they "only stand behind the windows upgrade" and were unable to help me. there has to be a way to do this. is there?

to paraphrase:
I want to upgrade from x64 vista to x64 W7 (I don't care what version)
I already paid for the OS so i don't want to pay again
any help would be greatly appreciated.

quick note, I searched 5 pages deep in the forum for a similar issue and didn't find one, if there is already a work around for this please don't hesitate to point me in the right direction. Thank you

A:need help x64 vista hp to x64 W7 pro WITHOUT "clean install"

Why would you pay again for the same OS? You own it for life to move to any computer or reinstall as often as you like with the Product Key you received. It does not expire or decide it doesn't like you.

What back-up disk is this you are trying to use? If it's the Apps and Drivers for your HP model then they are also available on the HP SUpport Downloads webpage for your model. Reimporting the bloatware and useless HP apps that have better versions built into Win7 can defeat the purpose of a clean install. The Win7 installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates.

I would boot the Win7 installation DVD, use the Custom install Drive Options to delete all partitions and reinstall adapting these tips to get a perfect install: Reinstalling Windows 7

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.

Hi guys, first off I haven't been here for help in years literally this was the first place I thought of because a few years ago many generous people helped me solve my problem, this place is awesome. Please pardon me as I am only decently literate with computers but try my best.

Ok I am trying to solve an annoying problem for my parent's computer. My dad was typing a normal document in Microsoft Word (OS is XP with System Pack 2, and it is Word 2002) and he said that just yesterday for the first time, after typing for maybe a half hour, a window would pop up with a "runtime error" and it would freeze untill he clicked ok on it, and it would then shut down loosing all his work that he didn't save.

So I got on the computer and opened Microsoft Word, and was able to duplicate the problem time after time but not every single time. When I simply open word, then click to close Word, the box appears, and he verified it is the same box he saw. It says exactly as follows, no more, no less, and every time reads the same -

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program:C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\WINWORD.EXE
abnormal program termination

So I tried to research it, and came across a fix on Microsoft's support site saying remove something called COM Add-ins. I did so by following each step removing the one COM add in i found, and it did not resolve the problem at all. It still errors out. SO I grabbed the master disk and un... Read more

Installed Win 7 SP1 with media refresh from (X17-58997). Made it a bootable dvd with MS USB/DVD Download Tool. Booted from dvd and used "custom" install option. I did not reformat nor set partitions (this is where I maybe goofed?).

My disk mgmt ended up looking like this:

BUT, I also have a windows.old file which I understand only appears after a repair. Also, I thought System Reserved was supposed to be 100 MB and mine is 350??

So do I have a clean install or a repair install? There have been a couple of glitches (display adapter acting up and WMP initially not playing any files until I reinstalled mf.dll file).

Any comments? Help? Suggestions? Thank you in advance.

A:Confirm "clean" vs "repair" install from .iso?

With Windows.old, doesn't look like a clean install to me.

You didn't have to "format" or "set partitions", but you should have deleted ALL existing partitions on disc 0----if you wanted a clean install. Deleting all partitions turns the entire disc 0 into "unallocated space" and you then install directly to the unallocated space---without directly partitioning it.

Was your E drive disconnected when you did the install to C? E should not be "active".

I know next to nothing about Windows.old--maybe you can just delete it instead of a re-do, but a clean install is not going to have it.

I've seen System Reserved vary in size, but not sure I ever saw 350. But you should have deleted it as well.

hello wise ones ...
the title pretty much says it all....
im curious to know if they are the same thing (a restore / a re-install)?
im actually asking this while biting down feeling like i know the answer but i think im kind of in denial.

~ im defining a reinstall as reverting back to factory condition with all the bloat-ware, etc., where you start all over from scratch.

~ im defining a restore as picking up where you left off from a back-up / image that was made previously.

wow ! in denial big times!

i have put a lot of work into getting my system to the way i want it. (changes in the services settings being the biggest one of all) and have installed three programs that i picked up for free and use regularly that will be inactivated if theyre uninstalled.

so if theyre not the same thing - and ONLY a Re-install gives you that fresh and clean feeling, how on earth can i quickly revert back to my preferred settings AND re-install my programs and the ones i mentioned above. the majority of my stuff is freeware but the ones i mentioned above are actually full versions that were being given away and i dont have serials for those.
is this even possible?
thanks all!

A:Solved: Is a "RE-INSTALL" & a "RESTORE" the same thing?

No they aren't (fortunately) the same. Your definitions of reinstall is more or less on track provided that you mean reinstall Windows. Restoring to factory settings is a reinstall from a disk or image provided by the manufacturer. System Restore however simply roles back critical system files to a previous date, leaving programs and files intact. It does however have a limited length of time over which it can roll back.

The best thing that you can do as far as keeping your software and settings is concerned is make and store a full disk image once you first set it up. To make sure you keep your files, simply get a regular backup going.

Unfortunately you don't want your main disk image to include all the problems that necessitate a reinstall. If you have to get rid of Windows you'll have to sacrifice programs and settings because it will be those that cause the present problem. Make an image once you either diagnose and fix the problems or reinstall and personalize windows.

Don't give up on the possibility of repair for the moment. If you are worried only about freshening it up there are techniques and tools to do that for you. If you are worried about something more serious there are plenty of people here who can advise.

Have you had problems trying to disable your sound when printing on a Dell printer?

I recently installed Windows 7 and have a Dell printer (not sure if this happens with other printers) and every time I go to print it says "Now Printing" and at the end it says "Done Printing". I found this quite aggravating.

I did find a page on this website that had corrections for Vista, but not Windows 7, and the steps are a little different.

After trying to go into CONTROL PANEL and SOUNDS, I found that readjusting these settings did absolutely NOTHING to get rid of these announcements.

After some more of my own trouble-shooting, I figured out how to get rid of these announcements for a DELL printer:

1. Click on the Windows icon on the bottom left of your screen and scroll up to DEVICES AND PRINTERS and click on it.
2. Left click on your selected printer (will have green check mark) and scroll to PRINTING PREFERENCES and click on it.
3. A box will pop up. In the upper right hand corner, click on OPTIONS and scroll down to PRINTER STATUS OPTIONS and click on it.
4. Another box will pop up. Click on the circle to the left of 'Never Display the Printing Status' so that the circle becomes blue. Note: selecting this option will disable your printing announcements, but it will ALSO disable the box that pops up during printing that shows your ink levels and percentage of printing completed. If you want to continue to see this printing status box, you will have ... Read more

EDIT: Rewritten for clarity
On Realtek ALC3861 Audio Driver (ver., A00) for Windows 10, there is no longer a button labeled "Show Meters" under Speakers/Headphones > Maxx Audio Pro in the bottom right corner (please see attached screenshot). This button in previous versions of the driver for Windows 7 opened a new window with sliders to balance front and back speakers in a surround sound setup.
What I did:
Updated my OS from 7 to 10 and updated the Realtek audio drivers accordingly - to the above mentioned version.
What I expected:
The "Show Meters" button would be present in the newest Realtek driver.
What really happened:
Upon upgrade to the newest driver, the "Show Meters" button disappeared.

I have reinstalled the newest driver multiple times with no avail and tried the driver from Windows 8.1 and the default driver from Realtek with worse affects (Dell Audio window is missing most elements/drop down options, etc)

If anyone would know how to address the issue, if this is intentional, or who to escalate this to, I would appreciate it.

A:Latest Version of Dell Audio is missing "Show Meters" button. (Windows 10, Dell XPS 8700)

I feel that I should be more observant. In Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Select the Realtek device > Properties > Levels there are the exact changes I need. I don't know why I didn't notice until now. Could explain why there was no "Show Meters" button in this release but I thought Windows 7 also had the same leveling and there was the leveling in Dell Audio as well.
I'm still going with a new sound card from Creative however, seen a super nice $70 one that looks awesome and seems to have features to match.

Hopefully somewhere here can help me fix my in-laws' new computer. They bought an HP Pavillion that runs Vista 2 weeks ago. I worked fine until yesterday when anytime someonew types "h" or "s" something funky happens: The "h" loads "Hardware Diagnostic Tools" and the "s" loads "HP Support Information." This happens regardless of the application or the keyboard (I already swapped out a different keyboard and that didn't work). Is there a setting in Vista that somehow the h and s were assigned these two programs as hot keys? These seems like a stupid settings issue but I couldn't find anything within the hardware section of the Control Panel but I may not be looking in the right place. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hopefully I'm posting in the correct forum section and that this isn't a topic that has been discussed frequently as I've done extensive searches and browsing before deciding to post.

So here's the problem/annoyance I'm encountering and I'm wondering if there's some sort of solution out there:

I have Vista Home Basic and IE7. I can download files quite fine, but the problem is that when I try to open the file either from the dialogue window that shows up after the download OR when the file opens automatically after a download, a new dialogue window shows up that says "Verify" (apparently while the system verifies the file for who knows what).

Now, that window showing doesn't really bother me that much, even though it does bother me, the real problem arises when you download multiple files at the same time and open those files because once the system tries to verify all those files at the same time it ends up crashing the browser.

So what I'm mainly looking for is a setting that would disable this file verification by Vista/IE7.

I have a fairly good computer, with 2GB of RAM, 2.20 Dual Core processor so I really really doubt this is a performance issue.

Can provide screenshots if needed.

I have an HP Pavilion and cannot get the machine to power down into Sleep Mode or Hibernation. When I first bought this PC the middle of last year I remember reading after my first Windows Update that the feature might be lost as a result of the Windows Updating process. However, as the months have gone by and more and more apps having been installed and loaded on to this machine, it now takes longer for it to boot up. I always liked the Hibernate feature on my old Windows XP machine, but since I lost the Sleep and Hibernation features on this machine and realized why they were gone shortly after having purchased it, I just went ahead with complete shut downs and cold boots. I have a new Dell XPS9530 which has a software application that was installed by default called "True Color" which is normally in the task bar near the clock.
I ordered the official Dell OEM Windows 8.1 disk (red in color) and the XPS 9530 Driver CD (Gray in Color) and did a fresh install on my computer.  Neither disk contains the previously installed True Color application and I also don't see it on the downloads section on the Dell website.
Technical support was not familiar with this application so I didn't get very far - was just told to reinstall everything which I've already done.
Where is the True Color Application and why isn't it on the recovery disks since it was installed by default from the factory?

Hey Everyone my Dell Inspiron 15 failed to upload an update, and then rebooted.
Then it got stuck on the "Dell" screen and wont boot up Windows 8. I can get into the Bios, but nothing seems to help, and the Diagnostic test says that it cannot find the Hard Drive.

Any help?

I am trying to install Office 2003 on a machine running Vista. Each time I attempt the install, it runs successfully until end when I receive a message stating "Error 1324: The folder path '.' contains an invalid character." Once I click "OK," it rolls back the installation.

I have tried right clicking on the Office2003 zip file, and selecting Run as Administrator, but I receive the same error.

I have searched the regedit for "." and found one instance, which I removed (in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GABEST\VSFilter\DefTextPathes\PATH0 Reg_SZ .). I restarted and tried again - still same error message.

Any assistance that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Good morning Camilla08 -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

I have seen error 1324 before - but it does come in many shapes and sizes. So, let's see what we can do to help you through this.

First, I'd like to take a look at the contents of a registry key.

Bring up an ELEVATED command prompt START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe up top | select Run as Administrator | answer the UAC prompt - Continue/enter Admin password

Now... copy and paste the following into the "DOS" command prompt box - EXACTLY as it appears -

reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell... Read more

Download Security Check by screen317 from.

Save it to your Desktop.
Double click the install icon.
If using Vista or Win 7 - right click the icon - run as Administrator
A command Prompt window will open.
Let it scan the Pc - press any key when asked.
It should now open in Notepad.
Copy and Paste the result of the scan in the reply box below.
