Every time I try to play music in Windows Media Player no sound comes out of my speakers. I'm not sure if its just Media Player, but I'm fairly sure it's not just Media Player.

When this first started, simply turning the volume up a notch made sound come out. But the sound would stop after a minute or so. Also, it has been making my computer freeze up frequently. I've tried playing music on websites like playlist.com and my computer locks up.

This just started happening today. I looked for hardware conflicts and found none. The speakers work fine. I believe it must be some sort of Malware.

Here's my Log

Hello,

I'm not sure if the problem is with Windows or my sound card so I posted here. A few sound related things on my machine have gone strange:

- The volume icon has disappeared and will not come back. In the taskbar "notification area" "customization" box it is listed as a past item, rather than a current item. I have selected "always show" but it doesn't show. I can still get to it via the control panel.

- No windows sounds are playing (eg startup jingle, dings, etc). I have played around with the "sounds" box in "sounds and audio devices", to no avail. At the bottom of this box there is a little "play" button so you can play sounds that you have selected - this is greyed out and does not work.

- There is no sound in Flash movies, which is how I discovered the problem.

mp3s and wavs play fine, as do movie files like divx and avi. That's why I think it's a problem with Windows and not my sound card.

I am running SP2 on a A64 machine with 1Gb of RAM so performance shouldn't be an issue, and in fact it wasn't because everything was working fine a couple of days ago. I have tried uninstalling everything I installed before the problem occurred. I have reinstalled the Flash player. I have checked the settings in Administrative tools / Services / Windows Audio, which was a fix I found somewhere. Nothing works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Since no one has posted a reply i will. Maybe you should do the obvious . Try a system restore.

So, every now and then, I have a random sound, like a music clip, playing on my computer. I thought it was a weird BF3 thing because it only happened when I was playing bf3 on a certain server.

However, it just happened without bf3 running.

this music clip plays for maybe... ten seconds, and I can't figure out what exactly causes it. any ideas?

Ok, I have a strange problem. I've been Googling around, and a few people had this same problem, but there have been no fixes. Whenever I used hit my Windows Key+L shortcut (short for Switch User) a sound would play, Windows XP Logoff Sound.wav, and when I would log back into the account, it would play Windows XP Logon Sound.wav. However, as of today, they don't play. There is a catch, however. If after I turn on my computer and log into my account, I log out of the account completely, and log back in, the aforementioned sounds begin to work via the shortcut again.I have checked Sounds and Audio Devices in control panel and verified that the sounds are enabled, and I downloaded TweakUI to verify that "Beep on errors" is checked, and I just don't know what else the problem could be.Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have been noticing this also on my Win 7 system but have never seem to be bothered. Maybe a software glitch but, would probably look into this after I've seen your concern.

Hi
I've noticed over the last week my computer and my laptop are both having the device connect/disconnect sounds playing frequently and randomly. About once every 2-10 minutes, I'd say. I found that when I unplugged my modem, it stopped. How can I fix this annoying issue? Is someone trying to hack me?

Started today when I opened Pro Tools. There was audio playing that sounded like a radio station. Sometimes two tracks would be played over one another and other times there would be adverts. The audio cuts out every now and then and then starts playing a few seconds or so later. In the volume mixer it is under "Name Not Available". That's all I can think of that might help sorry :/

It is so weird, it plays the audio in the previews fine, even the vocals, but when the movie starts the speaking parts are muted while you can hear all the background noises! All my volume controls are right, my speakers are set to disable all sound effects. The programs are set to their defaults, I redid the setup for WM Center. I have an Acer computer that came with these programs and Vista already installed. Please help!

I have disabled and disconnected devices set to show, but those are all that show. I have reinstalled drivers, reinstalled windows, downloaded Realtek, enabled onboard audio in BIOS, but nothing has fixed the problem so far. When I boot into Ubuntu via USB, the audio works fine.

Hi,

I am trying to play a DVD movie that I burned about a year ago. It has always worked previouly, but now when I try to open it from Autoplay or from Computer, I get a message telling me that Windows Explorer has stopped working. Can you help me with this one?

As always, thank you and

A:Windows Explorer has stopped working when playing movie DVD

Good Evening Folks:

I am having a problem with Windows Explorer and WMP11. I have the original King Kong movie that I downloaded and burned over a year ago. Every so often I drag it out just for the enjoyment of watching it again. This time, however, when I attempt to play it I get a message telling me that WMP11 has stopped working. If I try to open the files on the disk the message tells me that Windows Explorer has stopped working and will have to restart.
When I first started to dig into this problem I was because I was getting a message telling me that the DEP had stopped working. That has been cured by disabling DEP, but now it is Windows Explorer that stops working. There are also a few other glitches that have appeared such as a language bar that appears on the screen whenever the UAC window opens and an internet connection that will not run in protected mode even though that function is enabled. I have scoured the net and have seen a number of people who associate this problem with the installation of Vista SP2? If this is the case I will dump SP2 even if it means reinstalling the O/S.
I'm running a 32 bit Vista Home Premium O/S.
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Powell Lucas

After installing it I configured windows 8 pro build 9200 to play at the start up.
It worked. However after activating the op. sistem it no longer plays the start up sound (any idea ?).
Another thing I have no idea is why Microsoft supressed the log off sound.
Who had the brilliant idea to discontinue the log off sound ?
There should be a tweak to bring it back.

Sounds Stopped Working I have windows XP and very suddenly, the startup and shutdown sounds of windows XP stopped working. Then, suddenly (and I don't know if this is related), the same day, Quicken program sounds stopped, too.

I have repaired windows, and no luck.

Strangely enough, I am able to play "wave, mp3, and other sound files in my Media player and Realplayer.

When I go to Control panel, Sounds, and press one of the sounds under the Windows schemes and press the little arrow play button, NO sound is present.

Does anyone know what is happening and how I can fix?

I don't see any yellow question marks in device manager and everything says it's working fine. I checked my cables to my computer and they are firmly in the sound card. I do have sound, as evidenced by the playing of the wav files, but not for some system sounds, and now, not for Quicken

anyone have a clue, very fustrating.

drivers installed are realtek high definition audio 6.0.1.5326 17/11/2006.

A:Vista sounds stopped working

Left-click that little speaker icon on the bottom right.

Click on "mixer."

The various open "Applications" should all have the same levels or however you want them. Experiment with the faders to see how they work; they actually work really well for keeping your specified settings across applications.

When I start up my computer, it loops an error sound over and over again, but with no error on-screen message. I have determined that when I go into services.msc and shut down the Windows Image Acquisition service, that makes the error noise stop - but then of course my scanner stops working.

What should I do to resolve this? Why would the WIA service be involved with a startup continual error sound with no on-screen message? Does the WIA service need to be fixed and is there I was for me to do that?

Thanks.

A:Startup error sounds until WIA services stopped?

WIA is a manager. You need to find out what the culprit is that is causing errors. That means it is the Scanner driver/software is what is causing the problem. WIA started to be used in Windows ME as a way of managing imaging hardware IRQ's.

Information on the service and why it is used as a device manager for imaging hardware.

System is Windows 7 32bit SP1. I do have access to a Windows install CD.

gmer did indicate that it found rootkit activity. DDS Log is below.

It makes the occasional beep when hitting the wrong button but doesn't play any sound when watching videos etc. It is a Compaq Presario 2100 running windows XP - service pack3.
I hope you can help? Kind Regards, W.

Completely randomly, my mic started only playing the music I was listening to. When I press the push to talk button in Mumble, my friends can only hear the music that is playing on my computer. At first unplugging it and replugging would fix it for a minute. Now it is stuck only playing my sound. Vista Ultimate is my OS. Any suggestions?

I'm running Vista x64, and I just bought a Cyber Acoustics speaker system. The sound is working for my media player and everything except "internet sounds" such as youtube videos. I'm using Firefox and Realtek HD Audio Manager.

The speaker system consists of a subwoofer and left/right speakers. My speaker configuration is at 5.1, and they are set to the default format "24 Bits, 48000 Hz (Studio Quality)." I'm not sure what is causing the problem but I'd love to resolve it.

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks =)

Edit: Downloaded new Adobe software and problem was resolved.

I used to have an older, HP Pavillion (don't ask me which one I have no idea) and the headphones worked great on that. On my current computer, however, the only sound that will go through the headphones are the test sounds. So I plug them into the speaker jack in the back, and no sound whatsoever. I go onto the audo devices panel and there are three devices on there. There is "Digital Output (S/PDIF)", "Communication Headphones", and "Speakers/Headphones". My headphones are still plugged into the speaker jack in the back and I disable the Digital Output device. The headphones start working, but the volume is really low, even on 100% power. I plug them into the heaphone jack on the front of the case and they still aren't working. I notice that all three devices are run by the same audio controller, IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. I then go onto the device manager to see if there are any driver updates that I need to install and I notice that there is another audio controller listed; AMD High Definition Audio Device. For whatever reason, this controller is disabled and when I go onto the properties it does not allow me to enable it (the enable button is grayed out).

Some additional (probably useless) information: the headphone jack in the front is "Beats", and my computer came with a "Beats Audio Control Panel. The icon for "Communication Headphones", by default, is a picture of Beats headphones. The previously mentioned Beats Control Panel has settings t... Read more

Actually, it's both my startup and shutdown music aren't playing. It's not as if I am overly concerned, but I wonder if anyone could share some insight. I just reinstalled windows a few weeks ago, and I don't remember the default music playing either, as I've set my own sounds to play--but they're not.

If I can, get any help--that's awesome! Thanks!

If not, I'll live. (I promise.)

Hi everyone, I have a Problem!!!! When I try to play FlV (Flash) Videos on My PC, there is no sound, only the video. Ive Noticed that it happened when i've installed Windows 7 Codecs 1.3.4. can someone help me? please
I really Need Help
Sound Card : Realtek AC 97

A:No sounds when playing Flv Videos

What player are you using. Suggest you uninstall the codec pack, then try the following.

1) Use VLC. VLC will play flv out of the box, no extra software needed.

2) If you want to play them in MPC, you'll need FFDShow.

3) If you want to play them in WMP, then in addition to FFDShow, you'll need an FLV splitter. You can download Gabest.

I would suggest you first diagnose your PC audio, then if everything is alright, try VLC. After that you can try out the other options.

I'm Running E-Machines with XP 2000+ Win XP with Vinyl AC' 97 soundcard. When I woke up from my nap today and tried to play some mp3's using winamp, it doesn't play and prompts saying "Bad DirectSound Driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error Code: 8878000A"
So I tried playing it through WMP 9 and it doesn't work either an the "!" mark appears on my song list in WMP.

I tried the trouble shooting wizard for sound in control panel and even my system sounds cannot be played. My speakers, cables and power and volumes are all fine but no sound appears. When I went to the Divice Manager and to "sound, video and game controllers" there is a yellow "!" mark on the icon for "Microsoft Kernal Wave Audio Mixer" So I went to the properties and tried to update the driver but that seems to be the lastest driver and from that point on I have no clue what to do. Any help would be appreciated! Please help cause I need my sound to wake me up in the morning for class!

A:no sound playing, not even system sounds

I suggest going to the Emachine website, and downloading and reinstalling the appropriate sound driver for your specific model. If that doesn't work remove the device with the error as well as the Vinyl AC97 driver(should be listed in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS) and reinstall the same driver you downloaded earlier.

hey everyone,

Please help, i've searched the interwebs and have not found a solution to my particular problem.

I have connected my Asus K52Jr to my Lg flatscreen via HDMI cable.
the display is awesome and is working on the t.v., but no sound comes out, instead the sound stays with the laptop.

now i know everyone says go set the tv to default device in sound setting from control panel. well if only it were that easy.

when i do go to the list showing the possible sources for my sound, it only shows either my laptop speakers or the other one that has a picture of a t.v., which i assume is what i want. only problem is that it says its not plugged in, even though it is...

i don't know if im missing something, but please help!

i've tried connecting my laptop and then restarting it, but it didnt work. i cant set the tv to default because it says its not plugged in. my audio driver is updated to latest version.

i'll attach a picture showing what i mean.

FYI its not the t.v. or cable as i can play my ps3 and it works normally.

A:No sounds playing on my T.V. when connected to my laptop.

Enable the ati hdmi output, right click on it and set as default device. From that screen shot I see that your speakers are what are enabled and not the hdmi audio. I think that will probably fix it and if not try updating your drivers.

Hi, I posted last weekend. I'm really ever on this computer on the weekends to work on my homework.  I had a great helper, who had me download and run all sorts of things to try to clear up my issues.  Unfortunately, it didn't fix the issue.  It sounds as though there's an ad or video playing, but it's choppy like it's not playing correctly.  The thing is, I had no sites open at that point, and when it is happening, there are never sites where a video is playing open at all!  I put the speakers on mute so I don't have to deal with the noise, but when the computer is doing this, everything runs super slowly.  What can I do to fix this bleeping computer?!

A:sounds like ads playing, no site open

What I ran last weekend (according to what is now on my desktop: minitoolbox, adwcleaner, jrt, and fss.  No improvements.  I really don't want to have to buy a new computer right now.  But I need a computer for my PhD program.  And this one is now having issues opening and running things.  I keep having to restart it, but when i do, half the time it doesn't boot back up. It just goes indefinitely to a black screen, but the white mouse is visible and movable.

Hello there! I've been looking all over the net and asked my friends and tried out various things, but nothing seems to work and I'm quite clueless as to what to do now to solve this problem.

Before I start, here is the complete list of my computer's specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...67&lc=en&cc=ca&dlc=en&product=3462903&lang=en

My computer is identical to what is listed there, except that I have a legit version of Windows XP installed on it instead of Vista. The Vista that came with the computer caused way too many problems and I couldn't do what I wanted with my computer so I decided to use XP till Vista gets some of its stuff fixed. I've installed all the necessary XP versions of the drivers on my computer and everything is working fine and dandy, except for one thing. For some reason, when I record sound using my headset, it also records the sounds heard on the headset at the time of the recording. My speakers aren't on and there's no way the mic could pick the sound up from my headphones, the sound isn't *that* loud. This happens with normal Windows sound recording, Ventrilo, Skype... Everything. If I speak on Ventrilo while listening to music, the music gets transmitted as well even though it's playing from my headphones. The recording used to be fine on Vista and on my old computer where I've always had XP installed. Not really sure what I should try to do now or where to start solving t... Read more

I just installed Vista on this PC, and after getting everything that I need downloaded and installed, it plays 2 sounds randomly, 1 of which I can't figure out.

The first sound it plays is the sound from AIM when you send an instant message to someone (imsend.wav). The second sound sounds like it's part of some rock music track, about 5 beats long. It's kind of hard to explain, but they both just play whenever they feel like it.

The AIM sound plays regardless of AIM being open or not, and the 2nd sound seems to play any time as well.

I've scanned for viruses/spyware with Spybot, Windows Defender, and AVG, and nothing ever turned up. This is an HJT log (I'm running vista, and it seemed to give me a few errors when scanning the PC).

Reinstallation of Vista isn't an option I'm willing to consider at this time. This also happened on my old PC with XP Media Center.

Random sounds have been playing in my background. For example, just an hour ago, I could hear a news broadcast followed by a Miley Cyrus song. I open my task manager and noticed a file that stood out named b.exe. I closed the file and the sounds stopped. I opened up to the root folder of b.exe and found it in my Temp folder. Also in it were files labeled A - F. Is this is a virus or spyware of some sort? I ran a full system scan as well as scanned the folder using Norton and found nothing. What are the files that are listed A - F? Need help please.

A:Random Background Sounds Playing?

Hi IdiotSavant,

This is a case of an anti-lock spyware. It was on my rig too this morning same thing! World wide spyware launch! Try deleting the file and then restarting your system. The spyware is really bad for your rig if it is on too long!

I was using my computer with headphones, then sound only started playing through 1 speaker. They work fine on everything else. I tried to restart my computer, but that didn't do anything. Is there any way to fix this?

A:Sounds only playing through 1 headphone speaker.

If I understand you correctly you had headphones plugged in and when you removed them only one speaker has sound. That sounds like a defective headphone jack. Disconnect the front panel headphone/Mic jack connection on the the motherboard and then see if both speakers are working. If they are that would confirm a problem with the front panel headphone jack.

To start, hello. I'm new to these forums, and I joined because I need Windows 8 support.

About a week ago, I was wondering how I went about enabling the Startup sound to play. I discovered that in order to have any Startup sound playing, the option needed to be checked in Control Panel > Sounds. Coincidentally, I found that the Windows Logon/Logoff options were missing, so I went into the registry and changed the necessary 1's to 0's, and now they appear as they should. However, when I select a sound for them, it doesn't play when I log on. It is important to note that I'm under the impression that the Logon sound and Startup sound are two different things. The Startup sound I found that I could not change without messing up Metro, so I left it as the default Windows Vista/7 sound that plays. But if I am correct, there should also be a sound played when you log in or log off.

So, in short, how do I get the login/logoff sounds to play?

A:Login/logout Sounds Not Playing

Hello Kyle, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Unfortunately, the log on/off sounds have been hard coded to be disabled in Windows 8 to help improve the performance and security during startup.

As you have already found, there's that method to add these sound events back into Sounds, but they will still not function. I was going to do a tutorial on this myself, but it was pointless to add them back when they will still not play.

There's currently just no way to get these sounds to play.

As the Title says.

My Speakers and Internal Speakers along with the Microphones are screwing up.

This problem only started today, I haven't got a clue why and I haven't changed any settings whatsoever, Everything was working fine until one moment they weren't.

I've gone into Sound to try and fix the issue, I set my Sounds as Default for the headset, and I still have them playing through both, and I did the same for the Microphone, only on that one.

In Playback Devices, Speakers / Headphones is one and Communication Headphones is another, even if I disable the first, I can't get the second as Default for both, it won't let me have Default Device for only the Communication Headphones.

Under Recordcing it's much the same issue except the first one is Internal Mic, it's allowed me to put the Microphone / Line In as Default, except it won't pick up sounds from the Mic, only the Internal Mic even if it's not enabled.

So any help would be useful, searched your other threads 4 or 5 on here and none have been helpful in fixing my issue as they're different to mine, so please don't revert me to another thread.

A:Headset Mic & Sounds Playing At The Same Time

First thing, do you have the correct Dell sound driver. Non-Dell sound drivers tend to not work or not work correctly. This is the correct Dell IDT sound driver:
Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]
The "Speakers" should be the default playback device. In the Recording section along with the mic you should have the System Mixer (could be called Stereo Mix) and that should be the default recording device.

I'm not sure about the IDT, but many systems have a sound device control panel, located in the Control Pane/Hardware and Sound and they can be configured for both headset and speakers at the same time or configured that the headset mutes the speakers.

I have had this issue for a while now and while I play World of Warcraft which is a considerably hard game to run on a computer I get sounds coming from the ACTUAL computer itself, possible the motherboard. I would be fine if all it did was beep but in addition I lose control of my character and my computer does not respond to any typing I put. I have no idea what this issue is, I use a wireless keyboard and mouse and have been told it could be the singles crossing.

I have noticed that when I type in many commands at once that the beeping happens more often, however not always and sometimes light key commands can trigger it. This problem ONLY occurs while I'm playing this game and at no other times nor other games.

All of my drivers are updated and I have already reinstalled the game. I also don't play with the sound.

I'm not great with computers so let me know if you need any other information, I'll give you all that I can find atm

The situation is, I want to put a CD in my computer and play Halo Wars' soundtrack while playing some StarCraft 2. Of course, not to bother anyone, I plug my headphones. The problem occurs once I enter the game. Everything goes well until that moment, everything is playing in my headphones and suddenly, booms, the speakers of my computer starts playing everything and I don't seem to be good enough with the volume mixer to be able to make it all go into the headphones. Thanks for help.

A:Problem about playing sounds in my headphones only

Canada, welcome to Sevenforums!

Wow, this is very very strange. If I assume your are playing the audio cd in the drive, and starcraft is loaded on your computer without needing a CD, am I assuming correctly? That is a lot of music, do you have Starcraft music disabled?

Without knowing very much about your computer, you might simply look for a place on your speakers to plug headphones in and use your speakers (speakers>headphones) as your only audio output. Or you might consider unplugging the speakers and plugging in the headphones.

Any other function would have to be through software. So you would have to look up your audio device's software (and windows standard audio controls) and change any other settings through them. Make sure your audio driver is up to date.

Hi all,

This is a problem tha cropped up after I had a major failure of my system and needed to re-install XP on a fresh partition. I had a bad memory module and it wiped out windows totally.

Whenever I try to play a sound file (music, video) the system freezes solid. I have to re-boot the system to get it to run. Also when my kids try to play a game from Nick.com, the system also locks up.

I was running the DXDiagnostic program when it froze on the 3rd sound test. I had been using a Santa Cruz sound card, when this first started happening, but now I am using the onboard sound chip with the same results.

This is a fresh (yesterday) install again with the same results. I have the latest drivers for the video card, sound chip, VIA installed. I think the only thing I don't have in yet is SP1. I'm doing that now.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.3

Thanks

Hey again guys!

I think I may have somewhat of a peculiar virus. It seems to play 2 sounds kind of randomly, one is kind of like a deep yelping noise (kind of like youd hear from a dog but deeper in tone) and the other is a weird jingle, like an ice cream truck but its only 3 or 4 notes. I've had it happen both when firefox was open and closed to test so I don't think its a site playing some weird noise. They don't seem to be doing anything malicious but be annoying, but I figured I'd take a log and have you guys take a peek. Thanks!

Hi,

This PC problem has been around since the computer was purchased two years ago.
The computer name is Compaq Presario PC AMD 64 Athlon, the OS being Windows XP Media Center Edition. I've noticed that, whenever a program loads up, taking more than 70% of the CPU (in the task manager), the computer fan spins so quickly that a very loud whirring sound is produced. Not only is this sound annoying to hear, but also I am worried about the long term damages of the computer when the internal server overheats (which is probably why the fan is spinning so loudly).
Terminating the application in the task manager is what i do if the fan-spinning doesn't stop on its own, but there are several problems:
1. If that application is System, then I can't terminate it
2. Sometimes an application (e.g. IE) loads for a second and the CPU usage jumps quickly to 100%, before jumping back to 0%. This could damage the CPU
3. If I'm using a certain program, or visiting a site that has flash media, for example, the fan would spin loudly. I'm stuck between stopping what I'm doing or enduring the loud noise before the computer invariably shuts down on itself

Is there any way to fix this problem?

A:Presario PC fan produces loud sounds, shuts down computer if not stopped

It's probably too late now but if it was doing this since it was new, you should have returned it to be fixed free under warranty. It sounds like the heatsink is not connected to the CPU properly or there is something wrong with the thermal compound connection between the heatsink and CPU.

Ok so I have a simple, but annoying problem. I have no Windows Sound Events like the login sound, the logout sound, and when the battery is low. Every other sound like playing music and running YouTube videos work fine. Even when I turn on my laptop I hear the whole computer startup sound, but I don't hear the login one. I don't understand the problem. I went into personilazation and went to Windows Sounds, but when I select one and click "Play" I don't hear anything. I tried the other Sound Themes and they don't work either. I ran the Fix It program for Audio, and it didn't find anything wrong.

if I just install win7 and nothing else everything is fine, well it`s not - because I can not access internet and video playback stutters.but the display lights up.What am I doing wrong?or is the thing just broken down due to heat? warranty was void before I cut the vent,as it is 2 and a half years old.
any suggestions,anyone?
(hope you get what I am trying to say,Im from germany and not a native speaker/writer...)
Thanks in advance

Did this laptop come with Windows 7 Ultimate or did you purchase the OS and thus installed it?
Best bet for you is to get the HP Recovery CD or DVD for your model it will have all the drivers needed for your model. Basically it will install the HP Factory Windows 7 along with everything that's suppose to go with it. This process takes a few hours to run.

So contact HP Tech support tell them you need the Recovery CD/DVD for Model HP laptop. There is a cost for this so be aware. Then you won't have these issues saying graphic driver stopped because you don't have the correct drivers etc. The HP recovery will have all those installed.

Also with every HP system you get recovery with it but it's on the HD in it's own partition so whatever got installed might have blown out that partition and now you have an issue.

I was playing Skyrim earlier today when my computer locked up on me (this happens from time to time, my video card over heats and I've just been too lazy to buy a new one that isn't a piece of junk). I had to hold down the power button to boot it back up and when I got back to my desktop none of my programs would play sound. I heard system sounds just fine and I could test my headphones from the control panel just fine also. I found out that none of the programs I boot are being put into my audio mixer and when trying to boot up Skyrim again it gave me this message "No sound device detected. Skyrim cannot run".

So far I've tried:

Hello there,

I just got myself registered and I have some problems with my sound which now exist for ~ 6 months.

1. Problem:
You could describe the problem as a sound clicking or crackling. Those appear in various situations, for example when playing a MP3, videos from YT, gamesounds and so on. Mostly they occur when the sound starts or ends (for example a cut in a film), even the simple windows-sound when adjusting the volume has this problem, when i rappidly klick on the volume-slider.

Things i tried, nothing of them helped:

Reinstalled Windows 7 two times, bought a new headset (QH-95), bought two different soundcards (Asus Xonar D1 and Asus Xonar U7), bought a new mainboard (ASRock Z77 Pro3, same as my old one), updated all drivers (reinstalled windows), checked the sound with the Latency Check-programm (everything is green), tried playing the sounds without soundcard (Asus Xonar D1) , changed sound frequienzies, played audio without WiFi on, played audio without any devices (apart from headset and mouse) and defragmentaded my harddrive.

There is still no solution until this day. I slowly start to belive i'm the only one who can hear those sounds, it's just crazy and and the same time also depressing.

Examples of videos where the crackling appears for me:

A:Sound crackling, clicking etc. when playing sounds

Hello and welcome Florian mate sorry for the wait but it is a strange problem.

Now what immediately pops up for me is you equipment on an electrical circuit that is quite close to anything that uses microwave devices - phones, ovens, wireless communications or even wired communication stuff ? ham radio??

Now another thing that I think of is the sound card sitting snuggly in that slot and are the connecting cables also a snug fit?

Now I suggest you clean the slots and sticks cards etc first. I also have to assue all drivers are up to date?

SLOT CLEANING

Now as for the slots toclean them use a strip of old credit card (or any card thin enough some arebetter than others ) about 1/2 inch wide nip the corners off one end - preferably round them offhold a piece of thin lint free cloth over theend dab on some form of alcohol - isopropyl alcohol (what we swab the skin withbefore an injection) is good and GENTLYswipe along the slots.

This can also be done for the GPU slot/s andalso the contacts of the sticks or cards - not the stick but some lint freecloth of course. See my pic for the stick but please be very gentle doing it ifyou are in any doubt - please ask before doing it but I use this all the timeand have yet to damage anything.

Lastly but not necessarily the end can you read my ditty and post back your findings

A:Random Ad sounds playing and google redirection happens

Hi,

I cleaned up some of the unwanted folders in c:\Documents and Settings\arung_sivasankaran\Application Data.
Now the problem seems to be resolved. I am not hearing any unwanted audio and google seems to be working fine.

Again I am not sure if this is some temporary relief. I will keep posted if I continue to face this issue.

Thanks

I recently became infected with the Conduit search system and some other malware. I have been able to remove most of the malware, but now sounds play out of my headphones when no programs are open. They seem to be radio commericals. The sounds come and go, sometimes sound broken or choppy, and sometimes two or more sounds play over each other. They stop when I disconnect my internet.

I have run some internet searches but cannot find a solution. One site said that Kaspersky trsskiller solved the problem. So far I have run Kaspersky PURE 3.0, HitmanPro, and Malwarebytes. I have removed a lot of malware and trojans, but now the scans are coming back clean and the problem persists.

This thread describes my problem, and seemed to result in a solution:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/455590/sound-keeps-playing-automatically-sounds-like-many-radio-stations-playing-at-once-with-frequent-adverts-cuts-out-frequently-and-then-comes-back-on/

...however, I'm not entirely sure what the person did.

You can continue with Emergency Kit - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/emsisoft-emergency-kit/
And Superantispyware - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/superantispyware/
Or to ask for a help there, where I am sure your problem will be solved.
If your defense Kaspersky is I am not sure putting it together with Malwarebytes is a good, because a conflict may arise.

I'm extremely confused as to why it's still doing this. I tested my microphone and it doesn't work with my voice. It just plays sounds from my computer. I played a youtube video and I could hear it but not my voice, so its playing sounds from my computer and not my voice.

I've tried everything now. Reinstalled drivers, mic is unmuted, made sure it isn't the steromix selected.. etc.

I have my microphone selected as default device and my headphones set as default. I've been through all the properties and still not luck, need help.

A few days ago I noticed that my Windows Start and Exit Windows sounds weren't playing at all. They were playing before, so I have no idea why they would suddenly stop working. I also noticed some other strange occurrences, including Windows booting unusually fast (i figured this might be why the sound wouldn't play, ie. it didn't have time to, but now I'm not so sure), shutting down unusually slow, icons that are supposed to be in the taskbar aren't, and when the desktop first appears after startup, the right-click menu appears, even though I didn't summon it. I looked in the sounds section of the Control Panel to make sure all the paths were correct, and they were. They even played when I pressed the play button to preview them. Also, I noticed that the maximize sound doesn't play either. Every other System Sound I can think of plays fine, though. When I double-checked the Control Panel under sounds again this afternoon, I got curious and decided to change the startup sound to see if it would work then. upon pressing 'browse', however, I noticed that the directory reset to C:\WINDOWS\Media. This should not have happened, as I have been using a custom sound scheme. I still haven't tried to see if other startup sounds would work, but i will tonight, because right now I don't really feel like rebooting again. If anyone has any suggestions, i'd be glad to hear them!

Hey guys - just about an hour ago, I plugged my computer into my TV via HDMI cable, restarted, and suddenly was getting sounds, like TV commercials, playing while on the desktop. I looked at the sound mixer and determined it was coming from something called "Name not available", so I figured I had some malware issue. After looking it up, I found this site - evidently it's a pretty common problem, but I've also discerned that it isn't something I can just fix in a few minutes by myself. So here I am...

Why is my computer making playing these sounds when...?

Anyone ever heard of the old computer game "Commander Keen"? If you're really familiar with it, do you remember the sounds that played during certain actions during the game? I.e. shooting your gun, entering a new level, etc.

Well, one day when I was really bored a while back, I downloaded the game just to see how well I remembered it all.

I uninstalled it forever ago, but sometimes my computer still makes a couple of the sounds from it. I have a dell laptop, and with that I have a Microsoft wireless keyboard. now, whenever I power on my computer and open windows, the first time I press a key such as alt, tab or ctrl (on my laptop keyboard only) it plays a couple of those sounds. And doesn't do it again until I reboot my computer and press one of those keys again.

Also, it only plays on my laptop speakers even though I have my Logitech Z-5300 THX 5.1 Speakers hooked up and on. All of my other sounds (including warning and system sounds) play over those.

Even though it wouldn't be something you could set in your Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, I checked there anyways and everything is at its default sound. Ive never changed any of those.

Does anyone have any idea what the heck is causing this?

A:Solved: why is my computer making playing these sounds when...

WOW "Commander Keen"! I have not hear about it in years.

When uninstalling a program many leave peices of themselves behind. So I recommend you try a System Restore selecting a date before you installed it. Otherwise you are going to have to search the Windows Registry and delete any forgotten peice, which is hard and dangerous to do.

HELLO!!
This is my second problem with my computer - audio&video. Soon after installing WinXP I noticed that *.wav sounds (for example standard windows clicks and messangers sounds) are sometimes good(I open 2 or 3 folders) and then they are delayed (I click to open another folder, click is heard after 2-3sec delay). MP3 files such as music are played good. Ive got standard built in mobo audio card VIA AC'97.
Second thing is about movies, when I download some short ones from internet (e.g. 30sec) which are avi or mpg, or wmv. I play one of them and everything is played too fast (i think about 2x). After several reopening the file or player everything is correct. What should I do about it?? I think its about codecs. Which one you prefer?? Should I install some megapack or what??

I appretiate every word of help C U

A:Delayed sounds & too fast video playing

Hi

First uninstall any codec packs you have installed and then update WMP, then install this codec pack.

Booted my pc up this morning as normal, but my sound had just disapeared for some strange reason........

Windows sounds seem to have disapeared, i`ve been troubleshooting this much of the day now........

what i have is the following,

Audigy 2 ZS
Onboard Nvidia Sound

to trouble shoot i did the following........

Checked my control panel sounds, it was displaying no device, were it normally shows the Audigy 2

i downloaded the drivers again for the audigy 2

I decided to power off my computer and change the PCI slot, when windows booted back up i re-installed the audigy 2 drivers, it then asked to re-boot again which i did, still it seemed to install ok at the time, it`s still just beeping.......

so i tried to tackle it from another angle........

I went into the bois and enabled the AC97 audio codecs for the Nvidia onboard sound to perhaps work........

everything looks ok, the speaker icon loads and when i double click it the windows mixer console appears to be normal, same with default audio device within control panel / sounds, although no sound, just beeps coming from my computer when i get a pop up for example........

anyone any idea what is going on?

Hi,

Ok so the problem is as follows. Sometimes when I play sounds on computer (can be msn,video/audio, software, youtube) the computer slowly creeps towards a freeze.

Sometimes the sound starts crackling and sometimes the sound keeps playing uninterrupted (say I have a song playing, it might just play normally while everything else freezes or it might start stuttering/crackling).

During these freezes HD is usually idle/doing whatever it was doing before this happened. The mouse pointer moves around the screen as if nothing has happened. CPU is usually at 100%. There is not 1 specific program that hogs all CPU power but svchost.exe's instance dcomlaunch and its service PlugPlay (Plug and play) tops the CPU chart every single time. Usually audiodg.exe is somewhere at the top too.

If I keep booting and trying sounds until it doesnt freeze the computer will not freeze until I hibernate/shut down the computer. These unaffected boots happen totally random.

I have tried updating sound drivers (my laptop has the AC'97) but that seems to do no good. Also I have uninstalled my antivir as I thought it might have something to do with it but it seems like it didnt.

I have disabled enhancements for my playback device and that didnt help the problem at all.

If you have an idea what could be causing this please speak up!

"I already checked the sound driver, no question marks appeared"... Do you mean no exclamation points like this (!)? If you can hear normal sound from the headset the sound driver is okay. This could be caused by a keyboard setting. Make sure the sound is all the way up and that it is not muted

I have an acer aspire 7736z. I've had it for about 6 months. All my mp3's are through napster and I listen to them everyday. Today when I tried to play a song, a high pitched alarm would sound. I could still hear the song but the alarm was way louder than the music. It would continue until the song ended. I also noticed that anytime my computer would make a sound, like when windows starts up, the alarm would sound instead. I've checked everything and I can't figure it out. Can anyone help me?

okay I have ran SUPERantispyware, AVG Free, Antivirus.com online, CC & Malwarebytes.. And they all either say I have nothing wrong.. or that they fixed it.. But of course, they havent. One (I believe it is SUPERantispyware) said I have to download a program from another computer, then run it on mine.. Which I did, but it didnt fix it.

SO this is on my Sony Laptop. Running Windows 7.

If I turn my sound on, there is normally some sort of noise playing... Once it was Paula Deens show lol. Sometimes I cant figure out what it is.. it will just be music of some sort or random commercials. VERY annoying. I was even logged off last night. Sitting on the log on screen, and it was still playing. I turned off the wifi & at one point it did stop it.. But then after I tried it again, it still played. So I cant pinpoint if it is a Wifi thing or virus..

I think I have that redirect virus as well.. Sometimes I will click a link, or search for something, and it takes me to some other screen. But they dont seem to have the same names so it is hard for me to pinpoint what it is..

Besides all that, my laptop still gets the BSOD randomly, but I know that isnt a virus.. But it is something that happens..

Thanks for your help!

Hey everyone this is my first post, and I've read a few of these and saw some responses. One that I saw said to download ATF-cleaner which worked fine, and also SUPER Anti Spyware. The only problem is when I tried to download Super Anti Spyware, a windows error report comes up saying that IE (even though I use FireFox) has to close, and please report the problem. SO I can't even download the solution... I have the same problem as the other posters, random noises and Mcafee and malwarebytes won't run, uninstall, or even redownload. Any help is appreciated. Hello, I have been having trouble for about a week now with my computer seeming to have an infection. I started to notice internet explorer browser windows open up frequently. I have not used Internet Explorer since I installed windows 7, I use Chrome. However, I had Internet Explorer windows opening randomly and frequently and I could not exit out of them easily. I then started to notice IE opening the program but with no window opening as well (I would get a message asking if I wanted IE to be my default browser, as if I had just started the program). Attached is a file of the program being open without "actually" being open on my computer. Usually during this it would say "iexplorer" about 3 times in the running processes tab of task manager. My friend recommended running rkill and then Malwarebytes to address the problem. I have a log for that here:Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46www.malwarebytes.orgDatabase version: 4304Windows 6.1.7600Internet Explorer 8.0.7600.163857/12/2010 2:48:37 AMmbam-log-2010-07-12 (02-48-37).txtScan type: Full scan (C:\|F:\|)Objects scanned: 438698Time elapsed: 3 hour(s), 10 minute(s), 59 second(s)Memory Processes Infected: 0Memory Modules Infected: 0Registry Keys Infected: 0Registry Values Infected: 0Registry Data Items Infected: 0Folders Infected: 0Files Infected: 0Memory Processes Infected:(No malicious items detected)Memory Modules Infected:(No malicious items detected)Registry Keys Infected:(No malici... A:Dealing with infection (IE ads popping up, sounds playing randomly)

After some more thought, I believe I am interested in wiping my computer and just reinstalling the OS. After reading some posts by people with similar problems as myself, it seems like that is a common suggestion to be safe. I have virtually nothing that I care about losing on here, but I do have some pictures and word files I would like to keep if possible. What I am interested in is information on how to properly wipe my computer clean and start fresh in order to safely and surely remove everything that might be infecting my computer. Also, is there any way I can keep my external hard drive? I am having errors where it says it is an "unknown device" and it will sometimes connect briefly when I restart my computer and then later will error and say that windows no longer recognizes the device. I expect the external hard drive is infected as well, but I am not sure if there is any way to clean this and have it be clean after reformatting the main hard drive. Thanks for any tips or help. I am in desperate need to work on my computer but I need to know it is safe to do so.

Not every time the computer loads, but occasionally I will have extra background audio ads that play randomly in the background of my computer, even when no programs are running at all. Sometimes it is just people talking and it's not really even an ad at all. I can run RKill to get rid of it for the time being, but other than that, nothing works. This audio in the background is the only problem for the computer. No other noticeable viruses, etc. Thanks for the help.

Hello all,

I have been looking for an answer to this for a few months. My issue seems to differ from the threads I pull up from a simple search.

I am having the random music (sounds like WOW music sometimes, and advertisements occasionally) that are playing at random times from my netbook.

Norton found nothing. I found nothing. No screens are open, no suspicious processes in the task manager. I felt frustrated and decided I would just reformat my netbook, and re-install XP. Which is what I did today.

However, after downloading MSN and Firefox... it started again. The songs that are playing actually sound a little different, but I'm sure it has something to do now with Windows Live Messenger or Firefox.

I have set the sound devices to no sound as well.. that has not solved the issue.

If anyone has an idea, or solution, please inform me. I am feeling at the end of my rope. Not even losing all my data to reformat my hardrive and re load windows has removed this... "curse". I've only had the new xp running two hours, and it has happened approx 6 times already (more than before)

Thanks for reading,

Elysia

I hope i have the right board. Anyway I have a sony viao laptop.
It plays random adverts all the time. It also happens when I click play on a youtube videos or the likes. It'll play over the video its very annoying.

I have scanned the laptop with fully updated AVG, NOD32, SPYBOT, MALWARE BYTES, SUPER ANTISPYWARE.
not all at once but installed them one at a time an updated them.
they all found absolutly nothing.

I've uninstalled most programs also to narrow it down but it seems to be none of them.

I've always had AVG up to date so I dont know how this happened.

Does anybody have any ideas? I'd hate to have to wipe the laptop cause im away from home for a few months and dont have discs and drivers etc.

Cheers

Just set up my new Dell 660 desktop and noticed that with Windows Default sounds
that the "navigation compete" sound effect and some others don't seem to be working.
That one sound I mention is the familiar sound you get when using IE and clicking
the mouse to navigate around the web pages but a few others are not working either.
Is it possible that in 8.1 MS has eliminated those sounds?

I went to browse the .wav files and don't see that sound listed.

Any help would be appreciated.

My Windows 7 netbook (ASUS 1201N, 32-bit) has recently started playing sounds at random. It happens whether I have a browser window open or not. Sometimes it happens once every half hour or so, and sometimes the same sound plays several times in a row. The sounds can be advertisements for air fresheners, hand lotion, or aftershave, or just some guy saying, "Congratulations, you've won!". They don't always play all the way through, but get cut off at random points during playback.Typically, I don't have problems with malware - I don't open email attachments, I surf safely, I have firewall and anti-malware software installed (Windows Firewall, Microsoft Security Essentials). Since this activity started, I've tried MalwareBytes and Spybot in an effort to detect and remove the infection; neither have worked. I've tried MBAM (Malwarebytes) and Spybot - Search and Destroy, but to no avail.

Hey guys, I recently had my computer crash on me for the first time in a long time. After it rebooted, I noticed that random audio was playing in the background. It almost sounds like a bunch of pop-up ads are open at once, but there are none open on my computer. In my volume mixer, the sound source is listed as "Host Process for Windows Services."

I have been trying to fix this on my own, but I have been unsuccessful. So far I have tried scanning with Malwarebytes/Spybot Search and Destroy, used CCleaner, used TDSSKiller and Rkill, and did a Combofix scan. Even after using all of those tools, the sounds still play, and the computer crashes after a random amount of time. Sometimes the crash happens after only a few minutes, and sometimes it happens after a couple hours. I would also like to note that the Malwarebytes and Spybot scans came up clean. I have my combofix log but I think I'm not supposed to post it here.

I would appreciate any help/advice that you have for me.

Thanks.

A:Sounds playing in background with nothing open, computer crashes every 2 hours

Hi,

Since you have run Combofix, please follow these instructions:

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.
Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.
If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.
It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient. If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members. xXToffeeXx~

So I just bought a new laptop, toshiba satellite p755-s5390, and have been noticing some static crackles/ lag. When I play music (pandora) sometimes it randomly has a static spike and lags my mouse for 5-10 second periods, then goes away. This also occurs when I'm playing an online game (airmech). When it happens while playing, it lags my screen and shoots my ping up to 500-1000 when its normally around 75-100. I also hear the static while its lagging. I have tried re-installing my sound drivers but that didn't fix anything. I know its not my outlet because I have gone to different homes/hotels and its still there. Could it possibly be my Ipod? Thanks for helping!

I have the Logitech Precision PC Gaming Headset, and recently it started dropping off sounds from games. When i switch to the speakers, everythings okay. I played with the Windows 7 sound configuration and figured out that it only drops off 1-channel sounds. And to make it weirder, when i take it off my head, it works.

Hi all,

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to 8.1 using the same hardware as before, and have encountered a strange problem that I can't find the solution to.

I'm using an Alesis IO|2 usb audio interface (which my speakers are connected to) and a Razer Megalodon usb headset. Both are completely functional when used independently (ie. if I'm not using my headset, everything plays through my speakers fine, and vice versa).

However, there are many situations where I'm used to having audio coming through my headset and speakers at the same time. For example, if I'm on a Skype call I'm used to having the call audio coming out of my headset while still being able to play music etc out of my speakers.

The problem: Since using Windows 8.1, when trying to do this, both my speaker and headset audio breaks down completely into sporadic glitchy & loud crackles. If I want to listen to music while talking on Skype I have to disable my speakers (in windows playback devices screen) to force all audio out of my headset.

Neither of my USB devices has drivers associated with them, and I have the latest firmware on both, leading me to believe this is some problem with Windows. Has anyone got any ideas? I've spent hours trying to resolve this and have yet to even find someone with the same problem...

I have a WindowsVista (2007) system and a Toshiba laptop (2008). I tried to play NetFlix instant movies and when playing, there was a bad 'tinny' digital sound playing over the dialog. I used to be able to play YouTube videos just fine, but now cannot. This change happened after I contacted Microsoft Support (directed there by NetFlix support). Initially, NetFlix told me that there was a problem with Silverlight. So, Microsoft told me to uninstall and reinstall Silverlight. This did not improve the problem. Then, Microsoft told me to install a K-light Codec pack (4.4.5) and this did not help either. Microsoft told me to do something else, but I decided to write to a site like this in an effort to get some more useful help. Do you think it's Silverlight or Flash or what. No matter the volume on my computer (at max of 100) neither YouTube nor NetFlix play appropriately. When I play computer CDs (audio) the audio is just fine. PLEASE HELP! THANKS!

I listen to my music on Winamp, yet when I'm using any other program that plays some sound effect (for example, playing some online game on Google Chrome), every time the game makes a bit of a loud sound effect, for a second or so, the music lowers itself for that second, then goes back to its normal volume.

I'm assuming this is some default option that is auto-enabled in Windows 8, since Windows XP never used to do this.

What option do I need to disable so all programs playing sound will not interfere and lower other programs' volume down?

It other words, what option do I need to disable so all the sounds play at an exact same level at all times?

Thanks a bunch

Hello If someone can help with my retarded IBM thinkpad that would be lovely.

I have had sooooo many issues with my laptop, in the 4 years I have had it, it has completely crashed at least 10 times. The last time it crashed it kept on going to a blue screen and wouldn't load up at all, I took it to an acquaintance to get fixed he said my laptop is now old and its hard drive damaged and he managed to get it working again but he said for now I should just leave it on standby when I don't need it and I shouldn't actually close it. Meanwhile he recommended getting either a new hard drive or new computer.

The newest issues of my laptop are
- I get these annoying pop up screens that lead to a commercial or open a tab to porntube.com
- I sometimes have weird commercials begin playing and I can't find where the sound is eminating from
- Firefox crashes or freezes every so 10 minutes
- My CPU is being overloaded, 70%-100% is often being used

However I must say since I took followed the opening threads recommendations these issues have ceased for the most part but firefox is still not working as smoothly as it once did. The other issues are

- I can't remove avg, I uninstalled it but its still on my laptop
- I tried downloading avast but I kept on getting error, an unfinished downloaded avast is on my program file oddly, when I went to the control panel to completely remove it and try loading avast again, it wasn't in the progams listed.

Dear Bleeping Computer.com Virus and Spyware Removal forums: HELP ME!!! I don't know when this started happening, but I seem to have picked up a really strange combo of problems. I usually keep my system pretty virus and malware free, but something snuck in and I can't get it out. About two weeks ago I started having 'FAILED' redirects...pages would not connect, even though I could ping and google search for them. Thought it was a DNS problem, so I switched my DNS to google DNS servers and it went away. Fast forward three days and I'm having really strange pop-ups that appear underneath a browser session, saying stuff like 'This website needs JAVA' and 'Thanks!' and 'Error From Webpage' and such. I suspect a virus, and try to run Microsoft Security Essentials...but I find out it is broken! I cannot use it...so I uninstall, reinstall it...and run it. Then I get stuck in a 'Critical System Change, Need to Reboot' error loop, system is hosed. I go into safe mode, run Malward Bytes, run Spybot SD, and I catch about 20-30 instances of SIREFEF.A, SIREFEF.B, etc. trojans. Remove all those, and system seems okay. NOW...I have random sounds playing in the background like it is some sort of commercial, or playing little web clips or something strange. Happens at random when surfing the internet. Also, 1 in 5-10 attempts seems to redirect. So, to surmise:

1) I'm getting random redirect attempts

Once in a while (once or twice a day) a window titled "message from webpage" will be opened by explorer.exe with a lable "Thanks" and a button "OK".I used AVG, ESET, Microsoft Security Essentials, Exterminate It, Malwarebytes, CCleaner and ComboFix and by now all scans gives the computer a clean bill of health but the symptoms are not removed.Five days ago eset gave me this report but now it gives a clean report.C:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-266775593-2276910581-870900397-1000\$R3DXH1U.txt Eicar test file cleaned by deleting - quarantinedC:\Windows\Installer\{b815768f-eb22-5c7b-fbca-993571e2f1aa}\U\00000008.@ Win64/Agent.BA trojan cleaned b... Hello,
I am an intern and have a computer that i bring with me to work. My university has given me some antiivirus software, but one day my computer started playing strange ads for Lysol, the Army and other places all on its own. Task manager/process explorer shows nothing running out of the ordinary, so following the lead from a previous post, http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/942516-unwanted-sound-advertisements-playing-laptop.html.

I have included the Hijackthis log, the Hijackthis Uninstall list and the MBRCheck log.

My (ancient) Packard Bell PC (Windows XP home) has suddenly stopped playing DVDs.
Device Manager gives the '!' in a yellow circle for "H + H DVD-ROM DVD-41SD SCSI CdRom Device" x3 and HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B.
When I troubleshoot it tells me to uninstall and then Add New Hardware. I've tried this several times but each time I get this message:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I saw an old thread in which someone was able to fix a similar problem by creating a text file to fix the CD Registry. Might this work for me?
Please help...

A:PC just stopped playing DVDs

Is this just a DVD player or do CDs work in that Drive?
