Hi. I got some knowledge on repairing computer problem but i got this particular one i wasnt able to fix. No matter what option i pick in the safe mode list, the computer will not start. when i choose any of the safe modes, (safe mode, safe mode with networking etc) the computer displays a list of random commands (i dont understand any of it) and then restarts. If I try to Start Windows Normally, or use last settings that worked, it seems to start loading, and then restarts.

Any ideas?

Today I noticed that I could not open my start menu with neither the windows button, ctrl + esc, or a click of the mouse. I've also had a problem the last couple of days saving/opening files in one of the programs I used to make music. I tried to go into safe mode to do system restore, but the safe mode didn't boot. It scrolled all the system files on the screen but then just stopped and nothing happened.

So, I tried the other option (forget what it's called) that lets you perform various other system restoration tasks. I brought up the system restore screen from there, but got an error that said something about corrupt files so it could not perform the restore. I checked again, and all my restore points had been deleted.

Lastly, when I click computer, all the drives are blank with no names beside them, only the icons. I can still click them and they seem to be functioning normally, so I don't know if there is a relation to this. I don't know if some registry files were deleted or if there is some other problem. I didn't notice the start menu/safe mode/blank icon issues until I just recently installed the latest windows update.

Sorry if this seemed a little long winded, but I would appreciate help from anyone.

Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8.
It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.

Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.

The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.

Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.

Any ideas?

A:Windows wont start after 8.1 update wont boot in safe mode

What does the BSOD state? Most times it is a driver issue with the Display drivers. Other times it is hardware.

Your post is kind of confusing, not enough detail, but you may try
doing a repair install of xp. You will need to set boot priority to cd rom
in bios, and go from there.

Hello, and thanks in advance I have recieved a lot of help in this forum in the past. Last night my pc started running at 100%cpu and I unchecked a few things about searching from the start menu. They said it would stop casuing the exploerrer.exe to run at 100%. Then last night it kept crashing, but I was able to start it in safe mode. I did the system check today after work but now it asks how I want it started i have chosen all the options. It looks like its about to start then it goes to a gray screen and stops there. I know a lot has been posted about this. Is all hope lost? Of course I have files that I should have backed up ages ago... Thank you and I know you guys are busy.

Stupidly i picked up a virus through a 'windows security' pop up. Avira found a DIAL virus, still problems with IE google search affected and then Modzilla, AVG found nothing, Avira found it again, a microsoft product found nothing then Kaspersky found the nasties a rootkit (?) and another trojan. Instructed to do a system restore restart.
Now the laptop wont start up windows. It scrolls back to black screen safe mode restart. Safe mode doesnt work nor any of the start up options. Theres a flash of a blue instruction screen but that wont show up. Done the F8 key trick etc.
Other problem is the Win XP software was preloaded, no rescue disc.
Did a Sony Vaio F10 computer check which came up clear but am not progressing as worried about losing data if there is a better/another solution..
Any ideas?

A:XP wont start even in safe mode

There might be a partition on the drive that allows you to boot and restore to factory fresh conditions. What is the Sony model number?

Right now I'm trying to fix a computer that recently became effected with the "Anitvirus XP 2008" virus. Its gotten so bad that we can't get onto the desktop, and when we press "f8" to start safe mode, the option will come up, but when we click "start in safe mode" the computer restarts itself. It's done this every time. I was digging around on the internet and I found something that said that I have to make a bootable cd. Is this right? If not, does anyone know how to get past this? Please reply! Thanks!

I guess you're tapping the F8 key after you press the power button?
Some PC's will work tapping the F5 key.
Mine works using either one.

How to start Windows in Safe Mode

To use the System Configuration Utility method

1. Close all open programs.
2. Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK.
3. The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab,
Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK
4. Restart your computer when prompted.
5. The computer restarts in Safe mode.
6. Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
7. When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode,
open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT"
and click OK to restart your computer

I have a strange problem. If I try to start xp in safe mode, I get a message stating "windows did not start successfully. Recent hardware or software change may have caused this". There have been no hardware changes, although I have recently installed Malware bytes' anti-malware and SDfix. You see, I have been getting the "windows must now restart because the DCOM server process launcher service terminated unexpectedly" shut down error. I want to run SDFix to see if it helps with the DCOM error, but I cant run it because I cant boot into safe mode. I can boot normally, using the "start windows normally" or "last good configuration". Is there any other way to get my computer into safe mode?

I have a Sony Viao VGC-RA840G Windows XP Media Center Eddition. it was working fine all this time 2 yrs, till after a power outage, today. I try to start it, get to a screen where these option are given;
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

But none is working. It restarts but keeps going to this same screen with these options.

i dont have a a-drive to use a boot disk. I dont have the cd cause this was of the shelve purchase. I can use F2 to get to the BIOS screen or F8 for startup options or f10 which will take me through a full systems restore to factory defaults but will erase all personal files, which defeats the whole purpose. I have tons of photos of my 15 month old boy on there which potentially will all be lost. Is there a way that i can restore windows only w/o having to do a complete restore. I spoke to the tech chat support at sony and they say the only solution is to do a full system recovery and i should work with a 3rd party (that they keep pushing - called drivesavers- to have a back up made and do a data recovery excercise) Is this truly the only solution or are there possibly other ways to accomplish this?

Any suggestions would be helpful THANKS in advance

I have a Toshiba satellite with windows vista on it and an intel centrino, it is a laptop less than a year old. Last night it froze while using it and kept freezing so I started it in safe mode. My stupid computer programmer friend had me type something into the command part and now it wont even load safe mode, it just freezes when it is loading the windows files.

if i just turn the computer on it will get to the page where its all black and says windows with a green loading bar that slides by, but it never goes any further. If i hit f8 i can go into some things but then it says it cant find any problems in the start up and there is no recovery point. I also do not have the repair discs. HELP!!!! The problem is that windows freezes on a blank screen after the Loading windows screen. There were about 10 viruses on the computer, they have since been removed remotely. They included trojans, spyware and adware, and also [email protected] However the computer can still only be booted in safe mode.

here is a log. (from safe mode)

I know a bit about computers but i ain't the best an ain't bragging.
But i know a problem when i have one.
I wanted to get into safe mode in windows but cant.
I press f8 then select my operating system then the drivers start to load windows in safe mode.

The problem i get is it hangs on one driver, so I'm thinking this driver could be missing or is corrupt.
I have run chkdsk an have use the options to fix all errors but windows still wont start in safe mode.

I checked for Virus and Spy-ware but still no joy.
Also if this driver is missing or corrupt i cant replace it because i cant get into safe mode.

I have also tried the sfc /scannow in cmd but keep getting the message please insert windows xp disk in CD drive D:
The disk is in there i put it in ???? ????

Also don't ask me to do a restore as i have no restore points to go back to as i cleaned up the comp a few days ago.

Any suggestions as to whats going on??

Thanks in advanced

Around a week ago as I closed the computer down one evening, there was a MS update running, I allowed the update and the computer shut down.
The next morning my laptop would not start up. It would load to the password login screen and no further. I was able to go into safe mode and run system restore and this would then allow me to use the computer as normal, I was not able to use a recent restore point though. On rebooting I would be faced with the same problem.
I have updated all my security programs in safe mode with networking and run them but so far they have found nothing.
I have used Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes (the database was corrupted and was downloaded again)
WinPatrol has not notified me of any suspicious activity

in addition I have run a couple of online scans (I forget which ones)
I have run start up repair but apparently this has not fixed my problem. I am using online armour as a firewall. I am not convinced that I have any virus and my security is pretty comprehensive but I am at a loss to what to try next and would appreciate some help if possible.

A:Computer Wont Start.. Only In Safe Mode

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today. From your log it appears that you are missing one important program: an antivirus. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. Without one you are at a high-risk of reinfection; while I can try to sort your problem out, if you have no protection, the infections will keep resurfacing. Here are some great free antivirus programs:Antivir, Avast!, AVG, Bitdefender FreeInstall one of these, then run a full scan, letting it quarantine/delete anything it finds. Let me know if there is anything that it reports but can not remove.I have also noticed that you do not appear to have a firewall installed. This is an essential piece of software that acts as an extra layer of security, which restricts access to your computer from the outside world. Therefore, please download one of these free firewalls:Zone AlarmKerioIf you would like some more information about firewalls and how to use them effectively, take a look here. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click runThis.bat to start the script.Type Y to begin the cleanup process. It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.Press any key and it will restart the PC.When the ... Try pressing the F5 key down as soon as you turn on the computer. Hold it down until you hear a beep, a startup menu (a list of the computer?s various startup options) appears on-screen, or Safe Mode loads. You can press the F5 key to access Safe Mode directly in all Windows versions.

I tried going in in safe mode and this worked, but i need an internet connection
I thought maybe it has too much stuff on that account, ie hogging memory so i deleted a lot of stuff like 30 gigs of stuff but it still wont load
I need the internet connection at home so i tried going into safe mode with networking (i think that gives a net connection but maybe it emans something else)
i have ran spy bot s&d and deleted everything, also 2 other programmes + ms anti sypware new beta
thinking it was a virus but it cant be.

i tried a lot of the options you get in F8 but only the normal safe mode seems to work. i cant do a system restore as i deleted them yesterday as they were like a few gigs of stuff on it and i cant seem to find my xp cd so i cant reinstall windows, at least for 4 weeks as ican get a copy when i get home.

This started out as somthing i thought i could handel. Not long after startup the system shuts down and says it was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM. "Windows must now be restarted because the DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly." I thought i would be able to get rid of this by installing adaware and removing it that way. (I have no antivirus installed on the computer, i know im stupid, im sorry, please dont turn this into a 'your an idiot' thread ) so i downloaded adaware on another computer, burned it to a disk, (because the internet didnt work anymore on the infected computer) and figured i could install it. Well that didnt work. It would not let me install, i got about half way and it gave me an error. I attempted to start it in safe mode, and it just froze. a couple tries of that left me in a worse spot than i was. I did also try restoring it to a previous point, but it wouldnt let me click the next button....that weirded me out. Now the computer wont start, it keeps giving me a blue screen. then restarts itself. I hope i gave enough information and i hope someone can help me. Thank you for any help!

Hello All,
I am running Windows 7 RTM on a 1.75Ghz, 3Gb RAM box. Windows 7 was working fine for me, but this morning i just restarted because i thought it was acting slow. It had a proper shut down(I use verbose mode..)But then it never restarted. It just showed the HP logo and stopped.. I am even unable to get into the safe mode box(by pressing F8). I have a windows Xp bootable CD right now... and that doesnt boot either (Yes, I have ensured the booting order is correct.) What could be the cause?
Is it a hardware failure - As in harddisk crash? Because the computer just sits idle!! Strangely, I went to BIOS and did a disk diagnostic test which it passed.. But the harddisk LED didnt blink during the test(It should blink right?)... Please help me, i am really stuck here...

A:Windows 7 wont start.. unable to get to safe mode even!

Some kind of bios setting. Check to see the plug and play os is set to yes. If that's not the cause, use "standard optimized default" as the global bios setting and see how it carries on.

Can't hurt to actually update the bios from the motherboard manufacturer's website too.

When you reinstalled xp, did you do a clean install? Or just reinstalled over it? I suggest formatting and doing a clean install. If it still doesn't work, it could possibly mean that the hard drive is going bad. Find out your hard drive brand, download their diagnostic tool and do a scan. Good luck.

I have a windows 7 notebook that won't load into windows or load safe mode successfully its ends with a black screen and hangs forever. System restore wont even fix it. What command can I use to troubleshoot this other than reinstalling windows. Thanks

A:windows 7 wont start up or load safe mode successfully

If you have an install disk and can access Setup (possibly tapping F2 as you switch on) to change the Boot order to CD/DVD before the HDD, then insert the disk - Save and Exit, it will then reboot up with it and you will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD/DVD.

Select the Repair option and then Startup Repair in the Recovery Environment.

It will give you the option to select a restore point which you can opt for or pass on that and let it complete the Startup Repair.

If it reports that it was unable to repair, then you could give the restore point a try.

my dell dimensions 2100 with xp home is hanging at the windows logo screen. I can start it in safe mode, but am at a loss on what to do once there. Please help asap.
Thank you,

A:xp wont go past windows logo screen but will start in safe mode

Turn off computer.

Turn back on - as soon as you've pressed the power button - tap F8

This will present you with a number of boot options. Select

"Last known good configuration" this and see if it works.

Like the title says, my computer is stuck on a black screen. I downloaded an update and was instructed to restart the computer. After restarting the computer it went to a black screen. It won't do anything past that. I've tried starting it in safe mode but always with the same result. I have no idea what to do with this short of taking it to Best Buy to have the geek squad take a look at it and frankly I don't feel like doing that. If anyone knows how to fix this or has any suggestions, I'm open to anything. Please help.

A:Computer stuck on black screen - wont start in safe mode

Have you tried selecting Last Known Good Configuration from the Safe Mode menu? It sometimes works. Also, if you put in your W7 DVD and select Repair rather than Install after making the language choice, StartUp repair might help and if it does not, try System Restore.

Everytime i try to restart my computer in safe mode it runs the drivers than goes to a black screen and immidatly restarts. it starts up normally but right away Wiondow police pro comes up and prevents anything else from starting up. i need to boot up in safe mode to get rid of it but i cant and i dont have any disc to repair. any suggestions?

A:Computer wont start in safe mode so i can remove a virus and i have no disc.

I had a similar problem once. What I ended up doing was finding the program in the task manager, and ending the task (which promptly restarted). By doing this I knew what to look for on the hard drive. Then I went to that files directory on the hard drive and tried to delete it. I couldn't of course because it was running. See where I'm going with this? I then ended the task and deleted the file before it was able to restart, and not on the first try mind you. Hope this helps.

I am writing from my own laptop, but the problem I am having is with another laptop. It is a Sony Vaio running Windows Vista.I am getting an error message when trying to turn it on--Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:1. Insert you Windows installation disc and restart your computer.2. Choose language settings, click next3. Click "repair your computer"If you do not have the disc (of course, I don't!) contact your system admin or computer manufacturer for assistance.File: \Windows\system32\config\systemStatus: 0xc000014cInfo: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.

A:Windows VISTA: Failed to start...won't start in safe mode, or any other mode!

Typically the system32 Files I would simply replace and expect to get back in to Windows, but with The Registry file being purported as Damaged or missing I would recommend re-installing windows. You can get restore CD's from your manufacturer.

If you tap the F8 key on boot and get options to boot into other modes, I would pick Last known good configuration as you might fix the problem this way.
Not likely, but it's worth a shot.
Good Luck

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on Dell XPS 8100 with Intel Core i5, [email protected] GHz, 8Gb RAM, worked flawlessly out of the box in April (for five months). For a few weeks, powering off had produced "Installing Windows Updates, 1 (etc) of 8" - each and every time. Two days ago, power on results in normal system start until Windows Log In screen, which lasts about 2 seconds; then monitor displays all sorts of pretty colors. Left alone, the system restarts and ends in Black Screen with Start options; Start in Safe Mode works fine. System Restore works fine. But, removing power and starting again (cold) repeats above performance. Have attached zip file of Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2; but could not figure out how to include a Performance Monitor Report (no User Defined, or System reports shown).

These were both caused by hardware. Please read these to find out what it means and what to try

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .. A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint. Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress. All my MS Office 2013 programs crashed tonight and I'm trying to figure out what happened. I'm following the instructions here:

This is the section I'm trying to follow:

Starting the application in Safe Mode is a great way to find out if the problem is caused by and add-in. To do this, go to your Start screen in Windows 8 or click Start > Run in Windows 7, and type one of the following commands:

Type excel /safe and press Enter to start Excel 2013. Type outlook /safe and press Enter to start Outlook 2013.
Type winword /safe and press Enter to start Word 2013.
I'm at the start screen and the only place to type anything is in the search box. Is this correct? Because when I type outlook/safe here, it just brings up articles about opening Outlook in safe mode. Isn't it supposed to launch Outlook? What am I doing wrong?

This may be the wrong place to say this, but I HATE windows 8. Sorry.

A:How to start programs in safe mode from the start screen?

Well that worked for me, make sure you get the spacing's on the forward slash correct. The top sections was Program start excel safe mode. I clicked it and excel opened in safe mode? I don't think this has anything to do with windows 8.1 seem the method was the same in windows 7
I'm no Office expert but it sounds like you have some seriously damaged files in Office, you could try a repair install perhaps that would fix them for you.

So the other day, i was watching a video on my computer and the entire thing just white screened and died,
Then when ever i started it, it would blue screen, then start the whole thing again,
So i re installed windows, and after i reinstalled it will now only start in safe mode, this is the start up screen, as you can see there are some mistakes in the writing.

Even when i tell it not start in safe mode it does.

So my friend talked me through resetting my motherboard bios, but it will still only start in safe mode, i have disabled it in control panel.

This is what it looks like when i unplug the harddrive and turn it on, so it isnt a problem with my HD, so i was wondering if i could reset my motherboard to factory defaults, my motherboard is an asrock 970DE3/U3S3

A:PC will only start in Safe mode even when i tell it to start in normal

Yes, you should be able to reset the bios for the motherboard to defaults. But to do that you need to get into the bios and find the section that has reset to defaults button.

A:PC will only start in Safe Mode - very slow before when it could start normally

Hello and Welcome to TSF!!

You will probably need to load the files to a cd on another coumputer if you can't start in normal mode.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido (only if you have Windows 2000 or XP). If y... Read more

On Friday when booting windows failed to start and went into auto-repair. It did start then and again the next day. However this morning it failed again and the auto-repair was not able to resolve the issue, including when I told it to do a system restore.

I have tried to start windows in safe mode but rather than booting and the list of windows files is done I get a blue screen for 1 second and am back at the windows failed to launch screen (repair windows or start normally options). On two occasions while tapping f8 to get into safe mode while the screen was displaying "boot from cd/dvd" an error message came up stating that there was a disk read error.

A:Windows won't start, also won't start in safe mode.

It sounds like it's possible the hard disk has developed a problem. I'd suggest going to the manuf's website and downloading their tool for checking that specific model drive. Hopefully they will have an ISO that can be burned to CD or USB stick and you can boot into the tool and have it check the drive.

To boot from a CD or USB stick this option must be enabled in the BIOS... and sometimes the advanced boot screen that allows one to choose to boot from an alternate device has to be enabled before it can be accessed during boot (usually by tapping F12, but it can be different for different machines). So you might have to boot into the BIOS to enable these things before it will boot from a CD or USB stick.

But maybe someone else has another preliminary, easier option to try first. But a read error sounds indicative of a HD problem.

Hello Brandon and welcome to 7forums!

Looked at the most recent dump files and all point to the 0x116 BSOD known as VIDEO_TDR_ ERROR bug check has a value of 0x00000116. This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed

I also noted that your graphics card drivers were a tad old:

But I couldn't pin point the exact model of your GPU so please use the AMD autodetect utility to update the drivers:

#1 Hi, basically this probem arose from nowhere. I came back from holiday 6 days ago and my pc took longer than i remember to boot. Only till i realised the next day and day after it was getting longer and some times not loading past the 'Windows' screen. Each time when it hasn't loaded fully, I turn it off and re-boot pressing F8 to get up safe mode, which doesn't work at all.
It gets stuck on '/avgdiseh' doesn't load past and will stay like that till turned off. Start up repair does absolutely nothing, it asks to do System restore which then errors and reboots, if i press cancel it stays on the 'Scanning' screen for hours.. (8 hours today)

#2 I've now seemed to run into another problem trying to boot from my CD drive. First time I loaded everything correctly got to 'install windows' screen clicked start up repair which did nothing. Ever since that windows won't detect my CD drive even though it opens and did read CD's.(watched a film on it the other day)

I've looked online and other people have had the same problems and clearly i haven't found a solution yet. I've tried cleaning the inside of my case, double checking connections, changing boot options. From what i've read its either a failed HDD, failed RAM (, or failed CD drive in the case of my second dilemma)

I'm just curious as to whether anyone can pin point what the problem is. If its an easy fix or whether it is possibl... Read more

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Hey everyone, here is my serious problem.

Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to let my "Free Space" on my entire computer get to less than 5 GB left. It may possibly have been at 4 or 3 GB, actually.

My computer then froze, and I went to restart it. However, it would just take me to the blue screen of death. I've tried booting it up in every way I could think of, in normal mode, in Safe Mode, with the "Repair Windows" option, and everything else. My computer will simply not get past the "Loading" screen.

On the blue screen of death, it does say "Check to see if you have adequate disk space", so I am guessing that is a big part of the problem.

But here's my question. How do I free up disk space when my computer cannot even run?

*Note: I've tried going on the BIOS and Advanced Start Up, but I can't seem to find any options that would help with my situation..*

A:BSOD: Cannot start up normally, cannot start up in Safe Mode, "Inadequate Disk Space"

Use Ubuntu to free the space.

You can get it from here:

Step #2 on that page shows you how to create the USB/CD.

Then once you boot into it (choose the option where it just runs off the USB/CD) you can use it to delete your files or to copy them from the Windows Drive to an external hard drive (Note: Do not copy anything to the Ubuntu Filesystem as it will not be saved on shut-down)

Nothing works and I have to manually shut it down by holding the power button. It works perfect in safe mode. It never freezes and I'm free to use it how ever long I want. But not in normal mode, nope. Just freezes. Please help I need my computer for school work :(.. Ps. I I'm a nooby when it comes to computers

Hello CliffordJ. Microsoft Security Essentials is installed, correct? Many MSE users running Vista (but not all) suffered black screen after login following installation of Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - (KB3140527), released about a month ago. In fact there is already a thread here: The posters there disabled MSE 4.9 in Safe Mode by unticking a brand-new setting in the UI (Administrator > Turn on this app). Another method of escaping this situation would be to restore your system to a point before the update was installed, then hide the update in Windows Update. That would allow you to resume using MSE 4.8 if you wish.
I am extremely curious why this happens to many but not all MSE users running Vista. If more advanced forum members ask you for further information, I hope you will cooperate. Above all, I wonder if any other security software with real-time protection is installed (or perhaps improperly uninstalled)? Of course there is a possibility that your issue is something else...

I had this machine built just over a year ago, and only had occasional crashes (no particular activities seemed to generate the issue). About 2 months ago the crashes became more persistent, and upon restarting the machine would have trouble loading normal mode. At the screen that reads "welcome" the spinning wheel would simply freeze, and the computer would lock up. As this problem persisted the computer would either automatically reboot itself each time, or crash into a BSOD and run a dump. I can, however, start it in Safe Mode without issue.

It had been running the same install of windows 7 ultimate x64 until a couple of weeks ago when I attempted to reinstall. This solved nothing, so I reinstalled again, this time deleting the partitions and formatting the drive. Again, the problems persist. I'm inclined to think they're hardware related at this point, but I'm in no way an expert.

Hey guyz,

I am really in a great trouble. I wonder if some one could help me out with this issue.
My os details: Windows XP service pack 2.

My machine is unable to start normally. It always shows me the black screen with mouse pointer on it.
When I restart my machine it shows me the options to start my windows in:
Safe mode
Normal mode
last known good configuration

I am only able to start my windows If I select 'last known good configuration'. With the rest two I again go back to black screen.
I really cant continue my work like this any more.

Can any one give me a good solution for this?

A:Unable to start windows XP either in safe mode nor in normal mode

What is the brand and model of your computer, or motherboard, and what sort of Windows operating system disk you you have... OEM, Dell, Gateway, HP, or other recovery disk?
And how old is your system?
You either have a bad infestation, or a defective hard drive, video graphics, or memory module.
We can perhaps help more when we know what you have available.

Hello all,

I am having trouble with my fiance's laptop computer with Windows XP Home SP2. I am not able to establish a connection to the internet so I cannot run any of the online scanning tools, however I scanned and cleaned the computer in safe mode with Spybot S&D which was installed on the computer. I tried to download and install via jump drive AVG Free 8 and a current version of SpybotS&D. Unfortunately the installations failed due to the lack of internet connection. I ran Hijackthis and saved this log:

Hello skate2him and welcome,

While I see the many infections present on the system, I'd prefer to see a more comprehensive set of logs before I begin.

As noted in the final step (Step 5) of our sticky topic IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help....

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to usb stick and transfer it to the Desktop of the infected computer.

What DSS will do:create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Now here's a strange one... my computer will not reboot in safe mode. I turn on the computer, press F8, select Safe Mode (no networking), and the computer will reboot, give a message saying it was unable to successfully load windows, and ask me how I want to boot the system.

I have no problems loading windows normally.

Not sure if it will help any, but I'm also getting help in the HijackThis forum for some malware issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After encountering a couple virus, I was suggested to sue ComboFix and after the program took control of my system, it had to restart and when it did, it wouldn't let me back into Windows.

I'm using a cracked copy of Windows XP and there is information in the computer that I don't want to lose. However, every time I try to start safe mode, it will just load all the drivers and restart the computer and when I boot the computer in normal mode, it asks me for product key which I do not have. I used to patch it when I was able to get into Safe Mode.

I'm stuck in the normal mode, looking at the popup that states.

"Windows Product Activation"
This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on.
Do you want to activate Windows now?

I do not have a bootable Windows XP to access Recovery Console and I'm not sure if it will help me either, will it? Please help, as there is data I need.

Last week my home computer got a virus - PRO ANTI VIRUS 2009. I panicked and shut down my computer. When I got to the office, I searched on how to remove it and was advise to download MALWAREBYTES and run it on safe mode. I did that and run the program on my home computer three times. The last run showed 0 infection. Thinking that I now have a virus free computer, I tried to run it on Normal Mode. But my home computer won't open on Normal Mode!!! I tried pressing F8 and running everything from Safe Mode with Networking, Normal Mode, even system restore, etc.

Oh I also tried to run the system restore disk and just start from scratch, but my computer says it cannot be run on Safe Mode.

Please help as I think it will be expensive to bring to a technician...unless I really have no choice!

guys, i am stuck in an infinite loop it seems. i was trying to start my pc in safe mode, to delete a .exe file from C:\Windows\System32 which was suggested by a post to fix the "windows not genuine problem". To be able to do that, i ran msconfig and selected /safeboot under BOOT.INI tab. now everytime i try to reboot my pc it asks me to select an operating system (windows xp pro/microsft windows) if i select windows xp then it asks me to select a startup mode (safe/normal/last successful) and then no matter what i select it will reboot it self, and do the same again. If i select microsoft windows (instead of xp) then it shows MS Windows 98 screen and then goes into DOS prompt. from what i have read in some of the threads is that, i have a virus which is preventing my pc to boot in to safe mode, and because i have selected /safeboot from msconfig windows will only boot in safe mode, meaning i am stuck. the workaround these threads were suggesting was to find the boot.ini file and rename it to something else, which would fix the problem, because this file holds the info about in which mode your pc should boot. i tried to rename this file from command prompt (i cant get into windows, thats why), using "ren c:\boot.ini boot.ini" but it says file name invalid. i think this is because its a hidden file. then i tried "attrib -h boot.ini", but it says attrib cannot be used in DOS mode. urghhh. anyone has any ideas?

A:Can only start in Safe Mode

Hello dman1965,

If possible, restart the system, immediately tap / retap F8 function key to get Advanced Boot options.
Select Safe Mode with Networking (or if need be, Safe Mode).

a) Be sure you are logged in with Admistrator rights account.
b) Press Windows-key +R to get Run option. and in the run-text-box type in
and press OK or Enter.
c) You should see the General tab. It should have Normal startup selected (in the radio-box=selection)
IF it does not, then you click on Normal startup.

d) Click the Boot TAB.
Make sure that under Boot options, that Safe boot checkbox is NOT checked.
If it is, then click once on the checkbox to clear and press Apply & OK buttons and Restart system.

Reply back with your results.

As much as possible, obviously, you want to be in Normal mode of Windows.
Failing that, next best (temporarily) is Safe Mode with Networking.

Have there been any recent hardware or software or program changes recently?

nvvsvc.exe is an Nvidia driver
Has there been a recent driver update ? from which source ?

It then went to a page, with a picture i have on my computer in the background. But it wouldn't do anything, it just sits there. So i tried to start it up in safe mode, it says that there is a problem in the registry. How can i fix this? Do i need to send it in?

Are you seeing the "Advanced Options Menu" with the blue or black screen? Is one of the choices "Disable automatic restart on system failure"? At what point in the start up process does it fail and go back? What do you see? By any chance do you see the Windows logo and small text that says "loading your personal settings" or "saving your personal settings"?
Could be virus related. Do you have a second computer that you could use to connect just the "failing" hard drive to (as a "slave drive")?

I have waded through a few pages of search terms (but not all 40-odd that pop up no matter my keywords), but nothing I've yet come across seems to quite match my problem.

My computer begins booting up fine, passes the POST, then flashes white and fades to black like putting pressure on an LCD screen, and goes no further. Sometimes it repeats the white-fade. It's really quite pretty. It shows up on the network, and I can drop files onto it from another machine but the problem computer doesn't visibly enter the operating system. I can, however, start it up just fine in any of the three Safe Mode options and NO others, but when I attempt to restart and fight my way back into Safe Mode, it doesn't treat it like a reboot, making virus removal difficult at best.

I HAVE cleaned out the guts of my machine and made sure everything was properly seated. Up until my computer was infected, it worked pretty normally. Since it doesn't restart properly, I can't get Avast! to schedule a boot-up scan. I have run MBAM and SmitfraudFix. Smitfraud doesn't see anything, but MBAM sees a dozen infected files, tells me it has deleted them, and when I restart they're all back; sometimes with friends.

I KNOW I have an infection - Trojan.Vundo. Perhaps it precipitated this event?

I have received no errors notifications. Except from MBAM when I accidentally try to open it twice.

Every time I try to install SP2 the installation process goes fine but when my PC restarts, as soon as the Windows splash screen comes up it restarts again and says that 'windows was not able to load correctly'. Then it gives me a lst of options to load windows like 'Safe Mode', 'Last Good Configuration' etc. But I can only start it in Safe Mode, and then I have to use System Restore to be able to use my PC properly. It can't be a virus because I just finished cleaning my PC using Combofix and HJT in the HJT forum, so I don't know what the problem is. My PC is a Dell Dimension 4400, 2GHz Intel Pentium 4, 256MB RAM and I'm using Windows XP SP1.

I have been working on a computer running Win XP. Originally, the computer had a display issue, and I was able to reinstall the display adapter drivers in safe mode, and reboot normally. However, I need to reset the system configuration utility changes I made, and so I tried to reboot in safe mode, but the computer hangs after loading this -windows\system32\drivers\ipvnmon.sys. I checked the log, and the next drivers that failed to load were audio codecs. After that is a long list of other drivers that did not load. Any ideas on how to proceed?? The computer seems to run fine now when I boot normally.

I have a Dell desktop that I brought home from work. I converted it to work on a home network and everything seemed fine. I have another dell working just fine. I uninstalled some programs including Symantec. Now I get a blue screen stating windows has been shut down to prevent damage. I booted up in safe mode to do a disk check restarted and still same blue screen. I have the original xp install disks. Any help would be welcome.

What is the exact wording of the error message, please?

What model laptop?

How long did the laptop work properly at home?

Hi have joined this great forum but can't find relevant section on this.
I have recently had the trojan vandu.b and have been clearing and went into safe mode ......however I receive this message
System restore
System restore has been turned off and cannot be turned on in safe mode.To turn on system restore, restart in normal mode and then run system restore again.
My problem is how can I get normal mode ...I can only access safe mode at start up or when I log on.Also an administrator account has appeared on the desktop at start up.
Any ideas appreciated..Ian

A:xp start mode

Safe mode will display your administrator account in your user list.

When you go in on Safe mode, once you have rebooted can you go in normal mode.

Hi, I'm using Windows 8.1 and I followed the instructions on this site for starting in safe mode but when I got to the list I tried pressing 4 and F4 but the keyboard doesn't seem to communicate with the computer at this stage.
I also followed instructions so enable F8 safe mode start up but for some reason it doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

May I ask why you are trying to start in this manner? If there are other problems it would be mopst helpful if you can describe them.

My WindowsXP OEM is really starting to tick me off.

This isn't the first problem I've had with it, nor the first time this EXACT thing has happened before. Somehow my boot files get corrupt. First I was told that boot.dll or some such file is missing. I repaired that through the Windows XP CD Repair option, then ran a chkdsk /r. Next bootup I was told another .dll - something like hal.dll - is missing or corrupt, and when I fix that, I was told my system registry is corrupt. (The following file is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\System32\System.exe) Finally I gave up and repaired the installation through the cd's automatic repair option (after booting from the Windows XP CD, hit ENTER for setup and then R to repair existing installation). Now, however, if I try to start WinXP normally a blue screen flashes, some sentences spring up and before I can begin to read them, the PC reboots. I've successfully booted into Safe Mode with Networking (enabling me to post this). I've included a HJT log and currently have Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2006, Spybot-S&E, and ewido Security Suite installed. Last time I had to transfer files and reformat, and I'm hoping to avoid that this time.

I might add that neither an ewido scan nor Spybot - S&D search found any critical items when used in safe mode. I didn't notice any problems with the machine beforehand, either - it just stopped booting one day.
