A: please help Two hard drives in Explorer View

Hello majid55, and welcome to Ten Forums.

By default, Windows 10 will show your drives listed under "This PC" and as their own separate group in the navigation pane.

The tutorial below can help show you how to remove these separate drives.

A very knowledgeable techie on another website said : "I avoid Seagate like the plague and few other people I know in the business do too. From personal experience over the years, Seagate drive failure rates have far outweighed all other manufacturers combined."

I'm looking to have a computer built for me by allpczone, who has an exceedingly stellar rating on eBay. I want to get two 1 TB hard drives in my new computer. My external HD is getting full, so in the near future I'll be looking at adding another one to the mix. Only thing is, I'd like for all my films to appear seamlessly in one folder, so I don't have to search accross 2 hard drives.

I don't know whether this is even remotely possible or not.

Is there a way to make Win7's Libraries show the contents of a folder but not the folder?
Ie. now it shows up as like this:
Is there any way not to have those 3 locations segregated, as if it were just the one folder?

Alternatively, is there an alternative way to "trick" Windows into thinking that 2 hard drives are one single drive? Perhaps a special USB hub?

Hello. I have a brand new Sony SVT13112FXS - hard drive is a hybrid of 500 GB HDD and 32 GB SDD.

I was attempting to reformat it to get all of the anti-virus stuff off, except when I tried to reformat no disks were shown in the reformat tool. It asked for drivers, so I assumed I'd need to install the SATA/chipset drivers. I downloaded them from the Sony website but it wouldn't allow me to install them (from a flash drive). Specifically the error is "No drives were found. Click load driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation."

In my troubleshooting I (stupidly) marked the wrong partition as active and got the dreaded "bootmgr is missing" upon restart. I attempted to repair using the windows 7 disk as a recovery tool and selected "startup repair" 3 times, but it still does not work.

I am able to get into command prompt and I am assuming I can inactivate the (wrong) active partition there. However, when I go into DISKPART and type "list disk", all that shows up is my flash drive that I am attempting to install windows from - the computers hard drive does NOT show up here.

I will also happily completely reformat instead of repairing, but I cannot do that since I can't get the disks to show up in the reformat tool.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
-Lauren

Edit: My next idea was to try Gparted - any thoughts?

Just today this just started happening. Have no clue why, but suddenly explorer.exe began using all the resources it could and kept growing in size, RAM and virtual memory. My external drive also acted like it was being read, but I wasn't doing anything to it. I haven't downloaded any new software other than VLC.
It seemed to only do this while clicking on one .avi file I had Azureus not download. The other files are fine, but simply clicking this file makes the drive start doing what it was doing, and Explorer started eating the system. The file gives can in use error when I try to delete it also. I thought it could have been that file, either a corruption or bad sector, but the problem popped back up when I was transferring a few more .avi files from my laptop drive to another external drive. I'm pretty sure I didn't click or hover over any files I didn't download completely. The same symptoms occurred, but neither of the external drives looked like they were being read. Since I read from the laptop drive, maybe that was in use, but I'm not sure. Ending explorer and running it again fixes the problem until I click the problem file again. Also no new processes running in the background. Is there a simple solution or explanation to this problem? Thank you.

A:Explorer using 100% CPU suddenly with external hard drives

Well the problem is with the codec information that was with the avi the simplest solution to that is to delete the avi file in question, it will not work it will just keep doing the same thing over and over there is no fix for that problem unfortunately.

Hi all,

so I've been trying out build 7100 for a few days on my system, which includes quite a bunch of hard drives (usually around 8 of them) and ever since I got to run Windows 7 for the first time, most HDDs are listed as "Local Disk" in its explorer, while they're obviously supposed to be named something else (screenshots included below).

The thing is, even when I try to rename them, nothing changes in explorer. But there's a twist. If I have a look at the disk management utility in the control panel, everything looks fine! Labels are here and even get updated as I try to rename them through explorer although nothing seems to happen.

I've really tried out a lot of things already (ie : matching the security permissions of a working disk with the other ones, checking out if this has to do with the various sata chipsets those drives depend from) and I'm definitely running out of ideas. I couldn't find any consistent link between the working drives until this hit me right in the face... The only drives actually showing their names in explorer are of the same size, which is also the biggest one (1 Tb)!

Did anyone else ran into in this issue? Any ideas how to to fix this?

Oh yeah, one last thing : this only seems to affect my Sata drives. My IDE DVD drive and my usb flashdrive show labels correctly. And just in case, all those drives are showing up fine when I boot Windows XP instead.

A:hard drives labels not showing in explorer

But i only have SATA Drive, before 2 days there is no such problem.
Now I can see drive names in Disk management of Windows 7 and normally in Windows XP (Dual Boot)

Last thing, i run a full pc scan by eset nod antivirus before this problem

Hi,

Since upgrading from windows XP to windows 7 I've experienced several issues:

When browsing windows explorer it's quick to return the following error message

Usually after closing the program it then creates further issues such as right click lock ups on sub folders which I have to start task manager to physically end task on a sub folder that's stopped responding just to get rid of the window.

Another issue which seem to be permanent is when I resume computer from stand by or hibernation it shows BSOD then restarts I'm not sure if all these problems are related but I eventually plan on fresh formatting my pc but I'm just hoping that I won't encounter or experience the same issues.

Additional info:
Operating System:
Windows 7 Ultimate

Processor:
Intel Pentium 4 2.93GHz

Ram:
1.00GB

System type:
32-bit Operating System
Thanks for help

A:Explorer right click lock ups and hard drives not always displaying

Since you're getting BSODs and plan a clean install, you'd be best off to go that route right away, rather than spend a lot of time trying to clean this up.

To bump performance a notch or two, add more memory, as 1GB is slim for running Windows 7 without a lot of hard drive thrash.

We have a MAC machine running on BootCamp for Windows 8.1 as well as the MAC. It's been runing for almost 1 year. We found that on the Windows side (C:\ - BOOTCAMP) that this machine is only 4GB free space out of 371 GB. So we are starting to troubleshoot to find out what causing this.
We checked on C:\ drive (including Hidden file/folders) and select all the files and right click PROPERTIES to see the size and we found is 306 GB. So we are missing 66 GB !!!
Any ideas what causing this?
BTW ... we are running Windows 8.1 and we backing up via File History to external network device. But we now the fact that if the machine is not connected to the network, it backup to local disk. Now, we did setup to cache offline 5% of the disk BUT could be this is the issue?

I'm appreciated your feedback.

A:File size different between Explorer and Hard drives Prop

Bootcamp is a Virtual Machine. It will expand or shrink the VM, depending on the needs.

Also the fact that Mac OS-X uses a more efficient way of handling Drive Space use than Windows does.

Easiest way to find out is to click on "About this Mac" and "More Info". Mac OS-X 101.

Disk Inventory X is one of the better programs out there that shows you what is using up drive space for Size of the folders and how many files.

I believe I have contracted some kind of hidden virus. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do. I've purchased SEVERAL anti virus programs, anti spyware programs, etc....

nothing seems to work.

i've completely reloaded my system 4 times now (and even bought a new hard drive for a fresh install), i've spent hundreds of dollars on a couple of new external hard drives to keep all my business files intact.

it began with one of my extra drives shutting down every time i accessed it. it was a storage disc for my office files.

then, the problem began happening on all of my external hard drives and then, it appears, any folder that contained video files. i noticed a suspicious looking file called thumbs.db (which is usually normal, but this one is kind of greyed out- it looks different than what i'm used to seeing).

i thought i had the problem licked until today when i reloaded my system yet again (and now it takes about 10 minutes for the black screen to come up with "windows xp" and finally load).

i also spent 2 and a half hours on the phone with microsoft, who couldn't help me either

so, if anyone can help i will be eternally grateful!

i'm very new to this posting stuff so, if anyone could help could you please email me directly at [email protected] so that i don't miss your help?

Thank you in advance!!

Recently I formatted all the hard drives on my Gateway MX6214 Notebook computer.

When I attempt to install Windows XP it says the Setup cannot continue because no hard drives were found.

Obviously, the hard drives are in working condition because I also checked with some bootable diagnostic tools and the hard drives are check. But now it seems the "internal?" drivers on the hard drives have also been deleted during the format, so WINXP cannot recognize during installation. Same goes for installation of the OS Ubuntu =/

I do not have the original diagnostic cd that came with the notebook.

Are there any solutions anyone can point me towards?

Hi,

I have a folder with about 20 images and 20 folders (with avi's, images, and txt files inside).

When I initially check the disk size (while the folder is being viewed in Icons View), the disk size reads 28,415,404,695 bytes.

When I change it to Thumbnail View, the disk size increases to 28,415,444,631 bytes.

I know it's only a 39,936 byte difference but I'm just wondering where this is coming from? When I change it back to Icons View, it still reads 28,415,444,631 bytes. How do you get it back to the original 28,415,404,695 bytes?

Thanks

Hi,
I currently have 2 PATA hard drives installed in my system that both run off the same IDE ribbon cable. My MSI MS-7184 motherboard has 2 SATA connections and 2 SATA power supplies available. Would I benefit much by upgrading my hardrives to SATA ones? One of them holds the operating system and programs etc (160GB) and the other stores my mp3's (320GB). Would there be much speed gained or not enough for me to notice? Also would data be transferred faster if my PATA drives had one IDE cable each instead of sharing one? I seem to have 2 IDE connections on the motherboard.

Kindly stop starting multiple threads that discuss the same subject (libraries and user folders). The first one located here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/614766/libraries-issue/#entry4005914 already started receiving relevant replies and people are more likely to follow it, so I recommend you stick to that thread and await responses therein. If you then middle-click the icon on the start-bar, or open another instance of Windows Explorer while the first, failing one is open, everything loads fine.

As you see in the screenshot Explorer just sits there trying to load the folder I've requested. This happens, seemingly, randomly, at least I haven't been able to find a pattern. If I unmount all network drives the problem disappears. Sometimes it loads within a few seconds while some other time it can keep loading for several minutes preventing me from doing anything useful. As you can imagine this is very frustrating. One solution to temporarily bypass this is to cut the network connection and open the folder I need and then reconnect the network.

System:
-Windows 10 Home/Pro.
-ZyXEL NAS540 with latest firmware (I've gone through several firmware updates since purchase).
-Other devices mounted as network drives for easy access (e.g, Android phone, Shield Android TV, etc.).
-Router Netgear WNR3500Lv2 with Tomato firmware 132 by Shibby (Same as NAS, gone through several firmware upgrades/-downgrades, problem persists).

The router is Master Browser and WINS Server and these features are turned off on the NAS. ipconfig /all shows WINS Server as 192.168.1.1 (router).

My hard drive won't boot, and SMART says it's 'BAD, backup and replace."

I can't replace it now(no money), so I was wondering if there's a way to get Windows 7 completely pulled off the drive from its sectors and transferred to another storage drive WITHOUT the hard drive connected to a motherboard, no BIOS, etc. Just independent of its self, with the jumper/power to start it, can data be physically removed from it without it being connected to a motherboard?

Is there any way something like this can be done?

Because here's what I want to do ...

I want to clear the hard drive and keep its files, the OS, and other files on it, move them to another storage drive, then boot them from, say, a 64GB USB drive, and install them on a new hard drive from there. Will something like this work?

Assuming I boot from the USB with a new, functioning hard drive installed, can I just sort of "move" the OS to the new, empty hard drive to install it there? What are the steps of doing this exactly?

I'm not skilled/experienced in this area at all.

I am running Windows XP SP3 right now on a Lenovo 7650-ELU and experiencing some odd problems. For some reason, the laptop I have will not recognize USB Flash Drives that I put into it or External Hard Drives. I know that the USB ports work correctly, because I have plugged in optical mouses and keyboards that work. I searched the forums and didn't see anything like this.

It's odd how when I first insert them, it makes the sound and shows the icon in the taskbar that would allow me to safely remove the device, but nothing else. So far, I have gone into the device manager and uninstalled all the USB ports and restarted hoping this would solve my problem, but it continues to do the same thing.

If anyone has some helpful advise, please post. I appreciate all the help.

zformer,

You can consider the use of the Panda Vaccine on your computer and USB Drives:
Download Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine - MajorGeeks

This tool provides a two way security by vaccinating both computer and/or USB drives.
It work on NTFS, FAT, FAT32 formatted drives.
However, vaccinating a USB drive cannot be undone without formatting the USB disk, using a hex editor, or a File Manager in a Linux distribution..

Next, make sure that your Antivirus can scan USB drives. Some do not have this option.

I've got an old Dell Inspiron 8200 PC that the office uses as shared storage, printer server etc, and it's been having issues seeing USB drives correctly (Although the laser printer that's on USB has never ever had a problem!?!)

Yesterday it dawned on me that instead of plugging in the extra 2 drives I need I could put another couple of hard drives in, in place of the optical drives, that are never used on that machine.

So after a bit vague googling it seemed this was possible, so I went ahead and removed both optical drives, replacing them with 2 hard drives, (so now the PC has 4 internal drives).

... and they work! You wouldn't believe the hassle I've had with NetworkAttachedStorage and various different USB drives, while figuring out that this machine doesn't like USB drives!)

The thing is: the drives seem to be running really slowly. Is this because CD drives won't need to receive data as fast as hard drives do? Is there any way of setting it up to send data faster to these drives?

Everything works flawlessly except for connecting external hard drives and thumb drives through the usb port. I've tried multiple hard drives/thumb drives on multiple ports on the front and back with it working only once for the thumb drive. Usually Vista keeps sounding the device connect and device disconnect dongs for a few minutes and then every once in a while says the drive needs to be formatted, but the drives work fine on my Laptop that's running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Is this a common problem with x64 or is there something wrong with my system?

This looks like a mixture of two things.  First, the first half of the numbers is a CLSID for your C: drive.  Second, the second half is a registry reference for Norton Backup Drive used by Comcast.  So, if you happen to be using Comcast's Norton, this may be your anti-tamper function to protect your C: drive.  try looking here:  http://community.norton.com/en/forums/remove-backup-drive-norton-Comcast

I have just recently changed my PSU. I now have conflict with the hard drives and the DVD ROM and CD RW. When i plug the main wire in (the wide wire which goes to the motherboard from the drives) it seems to freeze the computer. As i do this, there is a change in noise coming from the computer it seems to go quieter. I think that when i plug the drives in it takes most of the power away from the hard drives therefore they are unable to run. I am running a 400w PSU for a P3.

Am i right in saying this, if so what can i do to over come this? I have been advise that it might be the jumpers on the CD RW and DVD ROM but i haven't changes these plus i do no what/how these work. Could this be a/the problem?

Thank you

A:Conflict between hard drives and cd drives

That would be the IDE cable and they have to be connected to PIN#1 of the drive to pin #1 of the cable there is a colored strip on one edge of the cable that connects to PIN#1 of the drive when connecting the drive the colored strip should be closest to you. Also please don't tell me your connecting cables with the PC powered up. IDE drive can also be daisy chained (two drives on each channel Master and slave)

So the machine I am working with is a consumer line Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Media Center and the latest A17 bios. It came with a 60GB sata hard drive that was almost full and wanted to upgrade to a larger drive. I grabbed a brand new Seagate 320GB hard drive.I booted up Acronis and attempted to clone to from a 60GB drive to a 320GB. Everything looked perfect. It saw all four partitions from the source drive and once done showed that for the destination as well. I shut off the computer install the new hard and proceed to boot. The computer attempted to boot but then received a stop 0x0000007b error (unmountable boot volume, for those unfamilar). Common issue when cloning disk so I proceeded to boot to an XP disk so I could repair the Windows install. Once it booted up, I noticed the drive was shown as a 58GB hard drive (the brand new 320GB drive). I restarted the machine checked the bios and it saw the drive as a 58GB hard drive. I pulled the drive and hooked it to four other machine that all stated the disk was now a 58GB hard drive. We checked disk management, booted to several hard drive testing tools and even poped it into a linux environment. The drive had been Permanently changed to a 58GB disk. To my disbelief, I started investigating. I tried another 320GB new hard drive, this time with ghost booted from win 98. Same process, everything seemed perfect. Reboot, dosnt start. I check the BIOS. This drive as well has been Permanently changed to a 58GB.Keep in m... Read more

I'm making an inquiry for a friend..

She has a computer with 2 hard drives.
The problem began with a 'screen error' saying to check the monitor connection. She bought a new monitor and had the same error message.

She then began having hard drive read/write errors. Thinking she may have gotten a virus, she wiped both her hard drives and reformatted.

When she tries to reinstall XP it gets about half way through and gives her the read/write error again and will not complete installation. This is true for both of the hard drives.

So far she's tried cleaning the connections on her 4 memory sticks (while grounded) and still cannot reinstall Windows due to the read/write error.

What is your suggestion for her next step since she has no working operating system from which to run tests?

While looking into another possible problem with a hard drive on my system,I began unplugging the devices (there are four of them) to isolate the problem and in doing so, I I seriously corrupted C drive, and began getting 0x7b BSOD messages. First I tried to do a System Repair with the Repair disk. It didn't work. I have a cloned version on an other HD for just such an occasion, so I attempted to boot from it. No dice, which surprised me. Remembering that one of the options in repair involved such a disk, I attempted to fix it that way. It refused to recognize it as well. I sat and waited a moment to consider my next move when the computer rebooted. Ok, let it run, and upon finishing POST, now I have Win7, Win XP (my dual boot) and Win7 Ultimate (Recovered) as my boot choices. Win 7 (Recovered) runs, but Win7 does not. XP still runs (thank god!). but here's the rub: if I disconnect either of the drives, my original (C drive) with the original installation or this cloned drive (J Drive) the system will not boot. Further, any updates say to the video driver installs to Drive J but it is obvious from running checks with EasyBCD and Security Essentials, some of the information is coming from C, some from J, therefore the "Virtual" name in the title. They are both contributing to the boot.

I am tempted to leave it but it isn't totally complete. For instance, I cannot install updates; the Windows Installer can't be found. I ran several checks and attempts on that as w... Read more

A:A Virtual Hard Drive? Two separate hard drives now run Win 7 x64

Do you have an Advanced Format (AF) drive or a drive greater than 2.2TB on your machine. For some reason WIN 7 ASSUMES that you want to use the AF drive rather than a different drive that you may have specified. This happens whether you are trying to do a new clean install or a repair on an already existing installation. Also, WIN 7 does this with no warning leaving you to ASSUME that you made the new install or repair where you wanted it.

I have very recently experienced the exact same problem when I updated my motherboard and processor.

Even though I did a sysprep on my old install to prepare for the new motherboard, WIN 7 still struggled with the 3TB drives. I tried a few times to 'repair' my install, but then again WIN 7 put the repaired install on another drive.

The only way that I found to prevent WIN 7 from defaulting to the AF drives was to unplug them completely. By this time, my old installation had become so corrupted thay I finally had to resort to a new install instead of the easy migration I had expected.

Once I removed the AF drives, the new install went completely smooth with no other phantom or otherwise installs on the AF drives.

I did have backup copies of my system on an image on an 'Acronis Secure Zone' (ASZ) partition, but with a clean install of WIN 7, once I told Acronis to use the ASZ, it deleted the backups and created a new empty ASZ.

I have a system and 3 internal hard drives.

The drvies are 120GB, 160GB, and 180GB but my system only recognizes 111GB, 149GB, and 167GB respectively. Tha tis about a 7% loss of space for each drive. 33 gigs lost in total. That's a lot of space.

None of the drives are partitioned and it's not and HP or other like system. It's a custom built PC. I only have an OS (WINXP) installed on my C drive (the 160 GB drive).

No matter how I connect these drives (on-borad IDE or IDE controller card) my system will not recognize the full space of any hard drive I install on my system.

The 120 is slave to the 160 and the 180 is on an ATA controller card (Promise Technologies) all by itself. All are Western Digital. The 180 is a special edition (and I recommend you stay away from WD special edition HDs. I have had to swap it for a refurb 3 times in 1.5 years. This is the first time I have installed it on a newer computer, though, so I hope it does not break like it did on my old, ancient system 3 times. My old system was and AMD 850 Duron with 128M RAM..but I digress).

So is there a way to get back this 33 gigs of missing HD space or is this just the way it is with WINXP?

Thanks in advance.

BTW, my MB is an ASUS P4P800SE with a Cerleron D 2.4MHz in case any of that matters.

Usually I have the Cassic Windows Folders on with the View as Web Page, which adds the image to the top left of the Folder and shows details of the file selected.

I've modified a few individual folder views to display the name of the file or folder, date created, date last accessed, and file type--in that order, reading L to R.

Can someone tell me how to make this view apply to all folders? I was unable to find the info at support.microsoft.com. I'm aware of the Folder Views option in Control Panel, (also in Tools |Folder Options) which provides for some customization, but that facility does not give the user the flexibility to state all the possible information that can be displayed, or the order of columns.

I set my Windows Explorer view by going to View, Choose Details, and then setting the column headings that I want to see, and then choosing the column widths (in pixels) that I want for each column. Then I Refresh the window and then go to Tools, Folder Options, and View. From that I select to make all folders the same view. This has worked for quite some time, but recently, when I reboot, the Windows Explorer reverts to the Microsoft default view. Can anyone tell me how to make MY need override MR. GATES desires???

Hi Everyone,

This is my first ever thread in a support forum so please go easy on the jargon for me!

I cannot view any images at all on any site on the internet. It's my partner's laptop and under his log-in he doesn't have a problem like this. It's so bad that I cannot click into different sections/headers of sites as I can't see them (for example, apple.com is almost inusable, it's just a blank page full of red crosses for me!)

I've followed some advice I've found on the internet but none of it has worked, e.g. changing security settings to default level, ensure the encoding is in western european ISO etc.

Has anyone experienced anything like this and managed to fix it? If so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Jess

You mean, remove the "BreadCrumbs"? You can do that with Classic Shell, there is a setting for Explorer. Just google Classic Shell and download it, scan it before you install it though, because I found a fake with a virus attached, and it has been floating around previously valid websites. Try to download it from only the developers site, dont get it from cNet or any place like that.

I like my explorer in the "classic style" with the Folders bar down the side and all files listed in "detail", but since the last couple of automatic Windows updates, it no longer starts up with the Folders bar, which I have to manually click every time, and shows all files in icon by default. Until today, if I click on View Detail, Windows remembered this for that particular folder, and over time all of my regularly visited folders would start up in detail, so the manual configuration was only minimal. Today, however, all files in all folder are back to icons as default, and Windows no longer remembers the detail setting when I revisit folders. Any advice?

Hi,
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).

I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.

I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks for your help

A:View Thumbnails in Explorer

I am going to say that because the pics actually reside on OSX, windows is unable to create a thumnail cache. It does this to speed up the viewing time, however your windows really doesn't "own" the pics folder on OSX and may not be able to build this cache properly and therefore you would not have any thumnails. here is an excert from the mighty Wikipedia about it:

"Beginning with Windows Vista, thumbnail previews are stored in a centralized location on the system. This provides the system with access to images independent of their location, and addresses issues with the locality of Thumbs.db files. The cache is stored at %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer as a number of files with the label thumbcache_xxx.db (numbered by size); as well as an index used to find thumbnails in each sized database.
However, when browsing network shares with write permission, Windows Vista and Windows 7 store a Thumbs.db file in the remote directory instead of using the (local) central thumbnail cache. This can cause issues when deleting remote shares, as the directory will become locked for a period of time when selected as Windows Explorer automatically creates a remote Thumbs.db file.
Creating Thumbs.db files on remote shares can be disabled with a Group Policy setting"

Hope that makes some sense, it would seem that is the problem to me any way.

yet another round of "ZT doesn't like changes that don't help him" here.

as we all know, vista (and 7) have all kinds of derpy templates for what details are shown when you pick "details" view in windows explorer. but I don't need to have half the ID3 tag of a given mp3 sprayed all over the details view along with a totally meaningless "out of five stars" rating thing. and having directories change to that if ever there's more than a few mp3s in them gets annoying; I value meaningful details; filetype, file size, date modified, etc. is there any decent means to keep myself from having to go and manually fix every directory and subdirectory that gets music in it?

A:explorer "details view" templates...

IMO...Windows is designed to provide a number of options to the varied owners of PCs. I consider this a plus.

I employ details view on my systems...but the details I reflect for a given folder/directory...vary according to the content. I don't need music file data on non-music files...and I want to see certain data in folders containing music.

I put all of my music in one partition...and then set the default detail settings for everything in that partition, choosing only those options I am interested in (bit rate, artist, size, etc.).

That strategy serves my needs and that's the only way that I can think of to easily get like items reflecting the same details in Windows.

I've had this problem for quite some time, and never bothered with it, because it wasn't crippling the use of my computer. But I'm trying to clean up my computer, and I want to try to tackle this now.

My problem is that I can't view things in windows explorer. When I open up certain folders (c, windows, temporary internet files, etc), it ends up looking like this with only the top row of folders visible:

I can access the folders directly through the address bar, or I can scroll through them with the arrow keys (beneath the field of vision) and the name will show up at the top. But I still can't view them. Many of my folders are fine, so I'm not sure why these ones are like this.

Someone told me it had something to do with my registry, but I hesitate to go mucking about in there unless I know what I'm doing.

help? anyone?

A:explorer.exe crash when trying to view files!?

You might try this in case explorer itself is corrupted:

SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

or if you have a Restore Point made before it hit the fan, try using that.

The new pinstack in Windows 7 is cool but one thing I don't like is the 'library' the default Explorer icon takes you to. To fix this and restore a basic 'drive view' is quite simple;

Update the Start Menu Shortcut
Click on the Start Button and type in Windows Explorer.

2. Right click on the shortcut when it appears in the search results and select Properties.

3. On the Shortcut tab, change the target to:

4. Click Ok to save the changes.

How can I set the view in Windows Explorer to be the same every time, regardless of what files I've been working on? All my files are on my D:\ drive, but when I open Explorer, it trots off to somewhere in the C:\ drive; I've attempted to set the "default view" (as I understand it is to be done), but that makes no difference. I want it to always open to D:\, showing the files there. Is that possible, or (typically) does Microsoft insist on Doing What's Best For Me and I just have to put up with it?

Many thanks. Appreciated.

A:How to Designate View in Windows Explorer?

If I understand this correctly, all you need to do is right click on the explorer tab in the taskbar (assuming you have it pinned there) and then right clik on the windows exploer option again. Then change the Target from %windir%\explorer.exe to D: and every time you click on it it should open right to D

On my wifes computer, when using Windows Explorer, I cannot get it to stay in folder view. When I click on a folder, it displays a single window with the folder contents, but the panel on the left showing the folders goes away. I cannot find a way to bring it back.

This is a real PITA when copying or moving files from one place to another. All I can do is, copy the files, close WE, re-open WE, and navigate to the destination folder, press Ctrl+V to paste the files into the new location. Then, if I want to delete the from the original location, I have to repeat the process and delete them from the first folder. I could use, CTRL+X, I know, but I don't trust Windows enough to do that.

There must be a way to make WE behave like in XP, but I have not found it. Thanks in advance for help here.

A:Folder View in Windows Explorer does not appear

If I understand the problem correctly, you must enter the "organize" tab, choose "layout" and then select navigation pane. Hold the shift down when you exit . The next time you open up you should be able to see the folders all the time.

Just wondering if anyone has discovered a registry hack to get Windows Explorer to show file size in details view as KB, MB, GB as appropriate? FreeCommander has had this option for years.

A:Get Explorer details view to show kb mb gb as appropriate?

Are you meaning that you want to customize the columns being displayed? If so then please right-click on "column heading bar" and tick on the Size Check Box. Or is it something else that you are looking for?

G'day everyone

For all of my folders, I use the detailed view in Explorer, but for one specific folder I sometimes want to use tiled view. I mean I mostly want to use detailed view, but on some specific occasions I need to use tiled view for that folder.

What I'm hoping is possible is to create a shortcut (e.g. from my Desktop) to that folder, in such a way that the shortcut properties specify which view should be used when the folder is opened using that particular shortcut.

Is that at all possible?

Alternatively, is there a way that a folder can be launched with certain view settings, using e.g. a script or commandline method?

Thanks
Samuel

A:To specify Explorer view settings in a shortcut -- possible?

If you set a folders properties from tools-folder options, the view of that one folder will be saved, it only affects everything if you click the apply to all folders which obviously you wont.

Ok I dunno how else to explain this but to provide a screen shoot.

1) I'd like to get rid of the Favorite links crap at the top, it just takes up space and I would never use it.

2) I would like to see the options above folders that had file, edit, view, Tools.

3) would like to see the icons in the bar for the same like Cut , Copy, Paste, delete and Map drive ...etc. I used them all the time and makes work so much easier for me.

4) Using WinZip now only allows you to just one option and that is to extract all. wich forces you to select a folder and then extract. The old better way (for me at least) was right click and select Extract files Here.
IS ther any way of getting that back?

I installed WinRar but it's not listed when I right click on a Rar file. What can I do to make that option appear in the right click options list as it did in Win XP Pro?

I know this is a lot so I will say thanks now for any help someone can give me.

When I explore a folder with (mainly) image files in it, they are displayed as tiles (thumbnails?) but widely spaced out vertically.

If I scroll the window up/down to refresh the view then the rows of images are closer together. Please see the attached "before" and "after" screenshots.

Is there any way I can get Explorer to do this automatically?

A:Q: Explorer - row height for icon view

Hello DarkStart,

You can increase the Size for the Icon Spacing (Vertical) Item in Advanced Appearance Settings to have more space between icons in all Windows Explorer windows.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Ok, apparently I've been just reading here for years and didn't register. Silly me - Sorry! It's an attestment as to how good the site is really. Anyway, I think this is my first question and I am soo appreciative of all the great advice found here it's saved me many times. Thank you!

In XP's Win. Explorer when deleting a file I have manually do View | Refresh in order to really see it is gone. Most people are used to it just disappearing, and don't believe that delete still really works like it used to. The view refresh thing is getting old. Is there any way to make the refresh automatic when something is deleted? I have tried setting all folders to be alike and checked all the "classic" settings for file handling (details etc.) Thanks - yep as you can figure I'm new to XP.

I recently had a virus removed from my computer. I have Windows 7. After the virus was removed, I noticed that Internet Explorer was missing.

At the time, I didn't realize that IE 10 is embedded in Windows 7. The virus removal software must have disabled IE.

I went to the Microsoft download site and decided to download IE 11 (pre sale download). I figured that IE 11 would remove any previous version of IE and install IE 11

The download (IE 11) did not download completely !

I went to documents/downloads and double clicked on IE10-Windows 6.1-en-us.exe

That brought me to a User Account Control Box which read: Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to your computer. The box listed:

Program Name: Internet Explorer 10 / Verified Publisher: Microsoft Corporation / File Origin: Downloaded from the internet

I clicked on yes

A box came up which read: Internet Explorer did not finish installing. Setup can't continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer.

How do I restore IE 10 to my computer ?

A:Unable to view Internet Explorer

There's a couple of ways that you can try -

First go into Windows Update/Installed updates to see if it's listed.

IE10 isn't embedded in Win 7 and is acquired via Windows Update.

You can right click on it and select Uninstall - this will revert you to whichever version you had before the upgrade and after the reboot, try the download again.

A more robust approach is to go Progs & Features/Turn windows features on or off and uncheck its box, but before you do this - you must have another browser installed as you will lose all access to the Internet as you will have effectively uninstalled IE - but give the first method a go first.

Hello all! I'm new here and was hoping someone could help me out. I am an aspiring CPA and just to sat for a section of the exam. In order to check your score you have to go to the NASBA website. Unfortunately I'm having problems viewing the website. I tried to contact them a couple of days ago and have not received a response, so I was hoping someone here could help as I am anxious to see my score. Here is my issue. When I go to the website, www.NASBA.org, I can view both the header where the NASBA log and search functions are and the 4 main categories (Members, Exams, Meetings, Library) along with sublinks. I can also view the footers at the bottom of the page (About NASBA, Center for Public Trust, etc.), however I cannot view what is in the middle of the page. This occurs on all pages within the site. There is an "error" on my internet explore that says done. There are several error messages, one of which is

Line: 143
Char: 3
Error: Unspecified Error
URL: http://www.nasba.org/nasbaweb/NASBAWeb.nsf/WPHP?OpenForm
Please note I actually get an error on almost every single internet explorer page that I open, all of which are "unspecified errors". I really appreciate any help you may provide.

A:Internet Explorer Help (Can't view webpage)

In IE click on 'Tools' >> 'Internet Options' >> 'Advanced Tab'.

Scroll down to 'Multimedia' and look for 'Show Pictures'. Be sure the box is checked.

If you want to stop the reporting of script errors:

Line: 143
Char: 3
Error: Unspecified Error

While in the 'Advanced' tab under "Browsing' uncheck "Display a notification about every script error".

I've searched the archives, but can't find a solution to my issue. I thought I read of a way to remove the annoying description panel in Windows Explorer in W2K, and just have the tree on the left, and the files on the right. The nice pictures and description of the folder takes up valuable window space!

Thanks, all.

Win XP Home : When i open Windows Explorer, the default view has "My Documents" drop-down list. I don't want that. I want the "My Computer" section to be the open drop-down.

How do I change that forever and forever ... as opposed to having to forever and forever re-click the view every time Explorer opens?

ALSO: I never use the My Music or My Photos subfiles; how do I erase them forever and forever?

Thanks. Appreciated.

SageThumbs is a program that allows thumbnail views of rare or unsupported file types like PSD. Up until now it's only been available for XP but now is windows 7 ready - 32 & 64 bit.

It's freeware and you can download it at softpedia - download SageThumbs.

Just thought I'd pass it along.

A:View PSD thumbnails in Explorer...FINALLY

Sorry Tagen, after coming across your suggestion here, I tried SageThumbs, and must say it is worse than not having SageThumbs. After installing even the normal blue PDS icon became plain white sheet. I uninstalled it and re-installed it, but no change. I'm now trying out Irfanview. My system is an old Dell with Windows 7 Professional. (32bit).
