Upgrade Optiplex 330

Q: Upgrade Optiplex 330

Hi ! I recently found a Optiplex 330 and i want to upgrade it. The actual CPU is the "***" Intel Celeron 430 (1 Core @ 1.8Ghz) Yes, 1 Core..
Anyway, i need informations about the best processor i can put into this machine. I see on the manual of this computer only 1 or 2 core processors (Pentium Dual-Core, Celeron Dual Core or C2D). I need to know if i can put an decent C2Q.
I think the Q8400S is a good idea but i don't know if it works. I'm not rich, i can't buy a lot of CPUs for testing. My BIOS is A11 (Latest) but I think DELL on this release "block" the possibility to put a Quad Core Processor inside this computer. I don't if it's true or false
Thanks for reply
PS : Sorry if my English is bad, i'm French

A: Upgrade Optiplex 330

Intel G31 Express Chipset ICH7R
Core 2 Quad Anything is not supported.
Core 2 Duo E6850 SL9AU would be max. They are not expensive now.

This is not a Dell conspiracy its what INTEL says the chipset supports. So your answer is False has nothing to do with Bios.

It will install and run but there is no driver support for it from Dell.
The 745 is an older system that came out in the Win2k days and the only driver support is 2k, XP, and Vista

Hi, I would like to upgrade my 755 SFF with a PSU that provides more power so I can install a better GPU (now Radeon 5450).

Can this be done, does the motherboard handles a bigger PSU?

What PSU should I buy and where?

A:Upgrade the Optiplex 755 SFF PSU ??

This is not an option for the SFF and never will be.
Look for a 755 mini tower so you can use 75W cards instead of only 25W cards.

What's the fastest dual-core and quad-core CPU the OptiPlex XE can handle with the stock heat sink and stock PSU?
The Dell Technical Guidebook lists E7400 dual-core as the fastest compatible CPU (no quad-cores) but I see many listings on eBay for OptiPlex XE's with E8400 CPU's. That leads me to believe that the newest BIOS (A05) supports CPU's with 1333 MHz FSB.

While I am reasonably certain my question has answered previously, the erroneous results that I've had to sort through thus far, no matter how I word the search, have been dauntingly numerous. These days I try to make an effort to find ways to cut needlessly time consuming tasks. Especially on the or computer. Life's too short to be spent rewording searches.
That said, my question is: what are my options, if any, for upgrading the CPU in my Optiplex 9020 sff i5?x

A:Optiplex CPU Upgrade

You'll need a 4-th generation (Haswell) CPU -- stick to the non-K models (the K-models are not locked and won't work in an Optiplex).
The i7-4790 will work:
(don't try the i7-4790K).

My machine currently has an Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5300 but I would like to upgrade it to an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 or Core 2 Duo E8600. Would either them work without having to change the PSU?
I would like to put the maximum amount of RAM inside, Crucial tells me its 8GB, Dell's tech guide says 4GB. Who is correct?
I need to add a HDMI port, can anyone recommend me the best card for this machine, remember it is SFF. I won't be gaming but I need it to cope with (HD) video files and I prefer nVidia.

Hi, I'm looking for advice on what soundcards will work on my Optiplex. Essentially I'm looking for something that can record my guitar with sufficient volume. I'm not looking to build a home studio, just something that doesn't leave me having to max out my speakers just to faintly hear what I recorded. So, those are my two requirements, and hopefully as cheap as possible. Any help very much appreciated.

A:Optiplex 755 SFF Soundcard Upgrade

The SFF only has one PCI slot. Note, not the newer PCIe (PCI Express) slot. I have sorted this from high price to low. Even though I chose PCI, newegg still lumped some PCIe in there which you cannot use.

Hey Guys,

I have a Dell Optiplex 745 with an E6400 @2.13ghz. I was wandering if it would be possible to install an E8400 @3.0ghz? Would my mother board be able to take this?

Thanks in advance.

A:Optiplex 745 Processor upgrade

I strongly suspect it can.

Both are socket 775 processors and will fit the motherboard.

I'd guess you could go as strong as a quad 6600, but there is always a chance you'd need a BIOS update.

Google tells me that there is a BIOS as late as 2.6.4 from March 2010.

Really, I wouldn't expect a significant difference going from E6400 to E8400, but I don't know what you're paying for it nor what you expect.

But now I realized that the speed is frustrating me. I have upgraded the ram and the hard and the graphic card withe magic of second hand shopping. But the processor is still a slug.
I tried figuring out what processor is compatible to Optiplex 960 motherboard, but I did not really understand how to find out.
Can somebody please let me know what is the maximum possible processor that I can hook up to this old fella?
The current speed is 3.0Ghz, and I think its not dual or quad.

Hello All,

My first post here so apologies if I do anything wrong!

My problem is with a Dell Optiplex 780 that has been donated to me, running Vista Ultimate. It came with 2GB RAM and is apparently upgradeable to 16GB.

So, I ordered a 4GB stick of RAM, put it in the computer turned on, fan whirrled madly but the PC didnt boot up, took the RAM out and it booted fine with the old RAM. So, bought a 2GB stick (both brand new and correct using Crucial Scan) and the same problem again, doesnt boot.
So, what am I doing wrong, when I have added RAM to other PCs it just pops in and Hey Presto! no problem, not this time. Am I meant to make some changes with the BIOS/Software etc?

It's very frustrating as it should be such an easy upgrade, no?? I really would appreciate someone smarter than me to help.

Thanks in advance.

A:RAM upgrade for Optiplex 780 Vista

Check BIOS settings. The CMOS should detect the new RAM on boot.

Details about your RAM can be found with PCWizard.

Through the Optiplex 780, the chassis remained the same - that said, you're better off buying a new (or a newer used) system than upgrading this one.
You'll find systems in the $200-300 range complete -- not a lot more than it'll cost for a board+CPU+ RAM alone.

I just installed a recycled Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor into my 740.  It's the 89W version, not the 125W.  The processor I'm replacing is a 65W 3800+.  The BIOS recognizes and identifies the new processor correctly.  The system boots (faster) and runs stably for the first few minutes but then the temperature starts to spike.  Up until that time the temperature is constant and moderately hotter than the 3800+ (seems reasonable, 89W vs. 65W).  I've swapped between the two processors several times, recleaning and reapplying thermal compound each time, without changing the outcome (other than a slight reduction in the old processors temperature).
I have the latest BIOS.  The fans are all turning and moving air.  The automatic fan speed control is behaving correctly.
At this point I have three questions:
1) Does the fact that the BIOS recognizes the 6000+ and the system boots cleanly mean that the 6000+ is actually compatible with my motherboard?
2) Do processors fail in this way, run fine but then go into some sort of thermal runaway?
3) Can the same heatsink that's been untouched for 4+ years and full of dust work for a 65W processor and then fail with an 89W processor after a thorough cleaning?

A:Optiplex 740 Processor Upgrade

Bios should be upgraded BEFORE changing CPU.  Otherwise you can have a system that wont even boot.

Optiplex 740 System BIOS 2.2.7Optiplex 740 System BIOS
Processors are not mechanical or chemical engines.  They do not go into thermal runaway.  They DO Burn up and die with improper heatsink mouniting and or lack of thermal compound.
Higher performance Heatsinks are not like the aluminum versions.  They have copper heat pipes.

These are usually for 130W processors vs 65W or 95W processors.  The POWER SUPPLY must be larger for some which is why QUADS DO NOT GO INTO USFF versions and or may require a TOWER 305W or greater power supply.

Changing the CPU is not validated or supported by Dell.  Which ones work or are Validated with the latest bios can be found by asking Chiris M what the Dell part numbers are.  Same with the heatsinks.  There are REQUIRED copper performance heatsink upgrades so it is NOT possible that the cheap aluminum heatsink is used with 85W+ and up cpus.

A:Probs with RAM Upgrade on Optiplex 760 (4 to 8GB)

Darthmaul1988,Below is memory information and configuration as well as memory specs the Optiplex 760.MemoryThe OptiPlex™ 760 system supports up to 8 GB of memory with a 32 bit operating system. The memory speeds supported are 677 MHz and 800 MHz DDR2 memory. Both dual-channel and single-channel configurations are supported.Like DDR, DDR2 is also SDRAM-based architecture with double data rate. But unlike DDR, DDR2 has some additional features, including 4N data prefetch, differential strobes for greater noise immunity and to improve timing margins, on-die termination (ODT) to improve signal integrity, and off-chip driver calibration (OCD) to improve system timing. DDR2 SDRAM supports Suspend-to-RAM and provides enhanced power management features (Power Down mode). What Is DDR2 Memory? In 2004, the computer industry moved to a next-generation memory architecture called DDR2 to allow it to continue implementing faster and higher-density main memory solutions. The transition from DDR to DDR2 is more evolutionary than revolutionary. DDR2 architecture is the same DRAM-based technology the industry has used for years but with some enhancements:.Higher speeds — DDR2 provides higher memory transfer rates. Current industry specifications call for transfer rates of 400, 533, and 667 megatransfers per second (MT/s). No other motherboards do not fit nor do they work with the ribbon cable to the front panel.

You would have to make sure that you get PC6400 DDR2 Ram if you do that.

Has anyone tried to upgrade Dell Optiplex 990 from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10?   I'm having problems upgrading and could use some advice.

A:Optiplex 990 upgrade from Windows7 to Windows 10

Best advice is not to upgrade. Windows 10 can be installed on almost any computer but it doesn't run well on all of them especially older models with windows 7. It can make computers fail. Since you never upgraded to windows 8.1 on that computer, you shouldn't install windows 10 now. Wait until you replace your computer to get windows 10. Check the Dell list for models that can be updated. The 990 is not on it. Heed the warning.

I have an old Optiplex GX280 with the following hardware:

Intel Pentium 4 HT @ 3.2 GHz (1 core, 2 threads)
2.5 GB of DDR2 (2x 1GB, 1x 512mb) (Supports up to 1GB x4)
PNY Nvidia Geforce 9400GT 1GB GDDR3 (PCI-Express)
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3

Obviously, I'd be putting on 32 bit if I were to upgrade it, but I'm not sure if I'd really gain anything performance-wise by putting on Windows 7. I've heard that it is faster than XP on machines that exceed the minimum system requirements and this PC obviously does. I bought it off eBay for $80, then put some upgrades in it. I added 2GB of RAM and the Nvidia card, which in total cost me $90 for those parts.

A:Optiplex GX280 - Should I upgrade it to Win7?

Let's just say, given the amount of memory, it wouldn't run any slower than XP. If it was me, I'd upgrade it if I had a license to spare. I don't know if I'd spend the money on Windows 7 for it, unless I got a great deal. You won't have any issues going to Windows 7, though.

Hi all,
First post! Ok here goes I'll try and make this short. I recently got gently used Dell with 1 gig mem and a celly d. Runs great until I try and multi task. Slows down, no crashes but should be better. Should I try and if possible upgrade processor? If so what do I need to check (mobo, chipset etc) Other then more ram(wich I will indeed increase) is there anything else I can consider to speed this thing up a bit?

Just to clarify..
I am using xp pro.any search on anything slows this to a crawl Also I have conflicting reports, can this machine take 2 or 4 gigs of ram? What do I check to find out?
Thanks for the help by the way
by celly i meant celeron d
sorry for the confusion

A:Upgrade Dell Optiplex 320 w/celly d to?

Update the BIOS.
That computer can utilize a lot of memory. That, combined with an update of all drivers from
and upgrading to Windows XP Professional will just about do it.
Upgrading the processor will not provide noticeable improvement unless you also upgrade the video graphics card as long as you also upgrade the power supply.

Hello I wanted to ask about a graphics card upgrade for my dell optiplex gx620.

Current specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.00Ghz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS
HDD: Seagate 250 GB

I am pretty sure I can upgrade the GPU but don't know which card works the best for it. Also my Power supply is 280 watts.

Thanks and if you need more info please tell me.

A:Dell Optiplex GX620 GPU Upgrade

With the very small power supply you will be limited. Unless there is a pressing need for better graphics I would just stay with what you have. Many (most) of the Dell's in the period when the GX620 (2005 area) was made have proprietary power supplies. If you have the full desktop you "may" be able to find a higher power replacement. If this GX620 is the smaller compact case models I would forget it.

Dell only supports XP as the latest OS, although that is not the restricting hardware issue.

Sorry to be so negative, but you are very limited.

- What is the fastest range of CPUs I can put in there  ?  Based on purely CPU power.  I'll be putting in a dedicated GFX card.

- 16GB RAM possible  ?

Then what can I do with a low-profile graphics card  ?  What's the maximum it could handle  ?

Is there a possibility of neding to upgrade the PSU when it comes to maxing out the GFX potential  ?

The 4790k is in continuous Turbo Boost mode. The core frequencies are selected according to this performance schedule:      4.4 GHz - up to 2 active cores; 4.3 GHz - 3 active cores;  4.1 GHz - 4 active cores. Odd quirk here -- turbo multiplier 42 is missing??  CPU-Z multipliers vary from 44, 43, to 41. The cpu (stressed) runs at 4.1 GHz. I used Dell's bolt-on fan and heatsink (twice as big as Intel's) with Arctic Silver 5 TIM.
Currently, the bios for the Q87 chipset mobo does not display overclocking parameters. I'm OK with that... no games, I do real work  . Here are some interesting screenshots --
Above:      Spread Spectrum at work on the Bus Clock -- range is 99.76 - 100.24 MHz approx.

A:Optiplex 9020 MT i7-4790k Upgrade !!

Thanks for the update on this combination.
You mention constant Turbo mode. Does the CPU never throttle down in light load? Like throttle down to 800MHz to save power and lower CPU temp. It appears that way even though CPU-Z shows a multiplier range of 8-44. Maybe I'm not reading this right.

I need recommendations on a cheap half height PCIe x16 card, that has two digital outputs via DVI or HDMI (preferably both the same type of port, either or).

What size Optiplex?  If its not the full desktop, being one of the smaller variations its going to be difficult to find something.  You may want to look for a Small Form Factor graphics card or if you have the normal desktop, something that isn't so bulky.  It also depends on your power supply.

Can I use pc 133 high density sticks if it is sdram?

The sticks you want are 512MB PC133 non-ECC with 16 chips (8 chips on each side), don't worry about getting ECC RAM it's probably not worth it. Kingston make suitable RAM, here's a link to their page:

Good day,

Thank you for your services.
I am trying to upgrade my desktop computer model # OptiPlex 780 and it is standard items I dint touched it before, after I did check what is the compatible ram speed, voltage and timing then I bought this model:
Its from Kingston - hyper-x blue or you can check the details by the Munificent code mentioned above or visitng this link:

The problem:
When I remove the original 2GB Ram and installed this 4GB ram on the first slot, the light # 1 & 3 start to led with sound like buzzing continuing without booting or windows interface.

I tried to:
- Change the slot
- Fix the maximum ram which is 4GB each slot up to 16GB
- Fixed the original ram 2GB in slot 1 then fix the new ram in slot 2 or 3 and 4
- Update the BIOS to version 15A and update all drivers from
- I make sure that the ram is compatible from the Dell Guide Book on this link:

So please help me in this case, this is urgent and I used this computer in my work and main office.

Thank you and regards,

Hi all,
have an Optipex 780 USFF and am thinking of upgrading the processor.
Dell specs say that the most powerful processor this will take is a Core 2.

I'm just wordering if anyone has tried installing a more powerful ship in these and what youve tired.

Ideally looking for a core 2 quad but am aware some of these have a higher TDP.

I'm not bothered about how hot it gets, but am just looking to see if it's compatible with the board etc.

I read many posts about the opportunity to upgrade an Optiplex GX620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium D. upgrading up to a D 930 or a D 960 seems good (according to the feedbacks).
Intel developed a lot of Dual Core processors. For example Pentium E 5500
When we look at the specs we can see that the socket is the same (LGA 775), and the FSB (800 mhz required) also. The voltage of the E5500 seems to match with the voltage of the D or 4 . I understand that E5500 has a smaller TDP (65 W) than a pentium D and should not give problem with heat..
My question is : can we upgrade an optiplex GX 620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium E 5500 ? and, if it is, does it worth it?

A:Optiplex GX620 upgrade to dual core

Short Answer NO you cannot.
The E5500 will not work in the 620.
Bios MUST BE UPDATED Before changing CPU.
Max CPU is the Dual Core Smithfield D820 or D840 CPU  Pentium D

A:best processor upgrade for Dell Optiplex GX620

The GX620 doesn't support any Core processors. The chipset theoretically could do some of the low end ones, but the bios has to recognize the processor and then more or less let the motherboard adjust the voltage provided to the processor.
The best you can get is a Pentium D I believe. The first Optiplex with Core support was the 745 if memory serves.

I am wanting to bump the memory of an old Dell OptiPlex GX110. I inherited it with 256 MegRAM (2x128). I have another computer with similar memory and 256 (so I could conceivably keep one 128 & add the additional 256). However, while researching it online I ran across a note from a memory supplier similar to, "Use only our special memory". Is that hype or is there special memory in these??

Both are SDRAM- the spare 256 is Crucial Memory from an old Toshiba 98SE machine

I had a pair of 256s in one of these and PCLinuxOS runs fine in it--- I am hoping that putting the 384 of RAM to speed things up on this one.

Your thoughts would be appreciated

Frankly, you don't really want to upgrade this machine. It has a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz processor, a non-upgradeable proprietary power supply, and only an AGP slot for a graphics card, and even then it only accepts a low profile card. Just about the cheapest PC you can buy right now will outperform this machine several times over.

Hi Asfand_Munib,
Before installing a new processor, please update the BIOS to latest version from Here.
Note : Please save and close all running programs and documents and disconnect all external peripherals (printer, flash drives, external hard drives, etc) and connect the computer to a surge protector before updating the bios.
If all the lights are green and you are not receiving any beep codes from the system then it means that the processor has been installed correctly. Please check if the keyboard lights (Capslock, Numlock, etc) respond when you press the corresponding keys. Please verify the connections on rear of the system and check if they are connected firmly. Also, check if you are able to hear any windows jingle sounds after some time when you power on the system. Please share the exact model of Optiplex 745 you are using as it comes in 4 form factors viz Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF), Desktop (DT), Small Form Factor (SFF), and Mini-Tower (MT). I'm not a hardcore gamer but i do play the odd source game, mmo and quake 3.

Hello, my Optiplex 7040 just arrived this week.  I bought a Kingston 120mb SATA ssd in a 2280 stick, so I'm trying to see if I can use this for my main boot drive (Windows 10) and then move the 500gb 3.5 Sata drive over to a storage drive. When I install the 120gb 2280 stick into the M.2 slot, and load the bios...   *It shows up under General / System Information / PCI information / Slot5_M.2 & also under Device Information / SATA-4   *When I look under System Configuration / Drives, it also shows up under SATA-4 here as well.  However, it's showing up as a 0gb Drive under 'type'!
So when I boot from a USB drive to try and reinstall Windows on this M.2 stick, it's not showing up at all.
When I connect the M2 SATA drive and load Windows on the existing 3.5 SATA drive that came with the 7040, the M2 2280 stick shows up in 'device manager' under the hard drives.  The serial # there corresponds to a Toshiba-form hdd; unfortunately, I can't do anything with it in Windows 10.
SATA operation is set to AHCI, and I am booting into legacy with the USB.Any thoughts?  I'm wondering if maybe I have a dead memory stick.  There's no real way I can test it on another computer to see what happens.

Hello - we just updated our Optiplex 745 from Win7 to Win10 and we cannot get the dual monitors to work properly.
Prior to the upgrade, we were able to run dual monitors (1 primary & 1 extended screen) without a problem. We used a dual DVI splitter to make this happen.
After the Win10 upgrade we have both monitors displaying the same thing and the system settings no longer sees the second monitor in the Graphic or Display Options windows.  Additionally, the VGA port is not recognized so I can't run a 1 VGA & 1 DVI combo.
Any ideas why this might be happening?

A:Dell Optiplex 745 Win10 upgrade now can't run dual monitors

Dell hasn't tested this model for compatibility with Win 10, so there might be some compatibility issues.
Did you install the latest Intel Chipsets and Intel Graphics driver for Win 10? Go to the Intel Download site and let their wizard scan your hardware for suitable drivers.
If you have an add-in video card, go to that manufacturer's site (eg, NVidia or AMD) and look for a Win 10 compatible driver for your specific video card.
And keep in mind that an add-in video card disables the onboard video ports. So make sure both monitors are connected to the add-in card, assuming you have one.

I've bought a CPU on the basis that it's compatible with the old dell optiplex SFF that I have and it works but only for several minutes. I think the strongest chance is that it's because of the need for a more powerful fan to keep the CPU temperature within recommended limits.
I've looked at some cheap options but I don't know if I need to connect to another power supply lead or anything else in order to get a fan to cool. The cheap options for doing this are on ebay for about £4 including heatsink (see: )
Can anyone comment and tell me if I can use this type of cheap athlon recommended fan and heatsink in the 740 without any problems?

The power supplies in the SFF are so small and the case is soo small that there are few to none upgrades.  USFF systems have no slots whatsoever.
The 19W ASUS EAH5450 would be the ONLY one I know works.
The Silent ASUS card fits all models Except the USFF.  Optiplex Tower is a better choice because you can use much better cards.
USFF isn't upgrade-able due to no slots.

After a looking into it I found the that the PCI Serial Port driver is missing and that this may be the most likely cause of my issue.
To fix it I took the following steps:
1. Downloaded and intstalled the latest chipset drivers from the DELL website. These drivers are labelled for windows 10 use
2. Down loaded this driver DRVR_WIN_R296702.EXE for the foxconn PCIe add in card driver.
3. Reinstalled windows 10 to see if the drivers would automatically update.
Unfortunately none of that worked, the only other option i see is to possibly run the fox conn driver install in compatibility mode, but I worry that it won't work.
Another possiblity is to install windows 7 install all the needed drivers, then install windows 10 over top to see if that fixes it. Or leave widows 7 as is.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and resolved it? If so how?
Has anyone been able to upgrade fully without issue?

A:Optiplex 790 PCI Serial Port Driver Missing after Windows 10 Upgrade

That driver is not foxconn.
It is also likely that you need to install CHIPSET drivers before PCI or PCI-E devices are "seen". Note that WT64 is WINDOWS 10

I have an Optiplex 5040 with an i7 and a free PCI-E 16x slot. I want to add a Geforce 1070 in this machine but I need a larger PSU to support it. Can I remove the factory one and install a 800w PSU and just use a 24-pin to 8-pin adapter cable to supply power to the Mobo while having the connections for the new graphics card?

I recently purchased a refurbished Optiplex 7010 MT. Core i7 3.40GHz 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD, DVDRW, 7P Minor side issue: I have already ordered the memory to upgrade it to 32GB RAM based on the advice of the store that sold it to me and Crucial.  Unfortunately, if I read the dell-optiplex-7010-manual-en.pdf right.  It can take 8gb RAM but only two of them for a total of 16gb.   Is it possible to utilize all four 8gb DIMM?   If not, the importance of the speed of the graphics has become even more important.
I need to upgrade the power supply and video card to run Adobe software -- Photoshop, etc. Based on prior experience, I need the fastest possible graphics option.    I'm thrifty but not stingy ... if I can get a racehorse for a bit more then I will.
The video card that I'm thinking about buying is the GEForce GT 640 recommended by Dell. Is there a specific version since the specifications also say "(OHGA3/M209N)"? I would prefer to be able to use a card with more memory but still PCIe 3.0 which appears to be much faster than the PCIe 2.0. If there is a better card out there, please let me know.
The power supply is standard. Since this is April 2016, the Dell recommended Corsair 650TX appears to be hard to get at best, Is there another power supply that would work?
Thank you for your help. Much appreciated!

I was planning on buying either a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF or an Dell Optiplex 980 SFF but I would like to know which one will work with Windows XP 64 Bit.

A:Will Windows XP 64 Bit work on a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF or Optiplex 980 SFF?

For Windows XP 64 Bit its best to use the somewhat hidden (old ftp website):
This has the old drivers listed of multiple versions including the XP x64 drivers not mentioned on Drivers and Downloads. The new ftp website is slightly broken at present.

That is the correct setting. DDR stands for Double Data Rate. CPU-Z is showing the "I/O Bus Clock". If you double 665 MHz, you will see you are running at 1333. 1333 is technically the transfer rate but is falsely advertised as the frequency.

Careful usage generally talks about "500 MHz, double data rate" or "1000 MT/s", but many refer casually to a "1000 MHz bus," even though no signal cycles faster than 500 MHz.Click to expand...

I bought it refurbished for $200.  It's working great and even overclocks in bios.  There is this thing about it though that it strange sometimes.  The audio crackles.  I'm presently not experiencing this from my rear port where it does it but it might do it again later.  The front port works odd, only one speaker works; the right one.  Also, my onboard speaker stopped working.  I'm going to keep this computer most likely when I buy a new one.  It's a 2.99 Ghz Core, the one I have right now.

After my previous gaming machine died a certain death I bought the Optiplex 380 as a budget replacement, it currently isn't capable of supporting any games besides the Sims 1...
I need to change/add a decent graphics card but I'm not sure what to get as I know the motherboard/power supply is limited in what it can cope with. I also don't have a £100s budget to buy something at the moment (although I'd likely shop second hand anyway).

So what do people suggest I get so that I'm able to play anything online? Thanks.

A:Optiplex 380

You are limited to SINGLE SLOT low power low profile cards 25W max.
The 380 doesn't meet MINIMUM requirements for most modern games with a 25W GPU.

I'm currently running a Dell Dimension 4600, 32 bit windows xp as a home user.
I have upgraded to a optiplex, which appears to have wireless included. I have yet to use it, but I wanted to gather some facts about graphical use. What graphics card were available for this? the 760 I imagine was on sale for two years or so, as it was late 2007 released, and the one I have got is a refurbish does include windows 7 on the front.
It has windows 7 64 bit  professional on it anyway, so I guess it wouldn't of been an early release model as Vista was the system on sale at that time.
Thank you

A:Optiplex 760

This is not a late 2007 machine.  Windows 7 came out in 2009. Dimension 4600 is from 2002 and AGP DDR1 so its not even remotely similar.
You can only use single slot cards and Only in the Tower and Desktop or SFF models.

I was wondering if I could find out if the USB 2.0 ports on the Optiplex 990 DT are high speed (480 Mbps) or full speed (12 Mbps). I see in the manual that the 19-in-1 Media Card reader USB port is 480 Mbps, but I don't see any specification for the other USB ports.
Thank you

A:Optiplex 990 DT USB Speed

They're 2.0 so the theoretical max speed is 480  Mbit/s.
They'd be USB 1.x if the max was only 12 Mbit/s.
Look in Device Manager. You should see one Enhanced Host Controller entry which is required for the ports to run as USB 2.

I am new to this site, and I am needing some help. I am trying to erase the hard drive on a Dell Optiplex 755 with Windows XP, and reinstall factory settings. I have already reinstalled major drivers once, but the user says that this harddrive is "buggy", and since I'm suppose to be the IT guru he wants me to do a factory reset. My two questions are this. First. Is it Ctrl F11 or F12 that I hold when starting up, and where do i go from there? Secondly. Do I need anything like killdisk or paragon disk wiper pro to fully erase harddrive?

Thanks for youtr help.

Trying to fix this thing up for my grandaughter. It has a 200 mh. processor 128MB ram and a 40GB hard drive. Now it seems that the mb. drive controller is inop. At least that is what it says when I try to boot. I was told that it wouldn't support the 40 GB drive anyway so I bought a PCI ATA card. By the way I installed a 6GB. drive to see if the MB.would boot it,and it said the same thing. How can I get it to boot? It seems impossible because I need the PCI card to get to the drive and the system needs the driver for the PCI card to run the drive. Is there any chance???

Hi everyone,

I have been looking up about getting a replacement for my existing CPU which is an Intel Core i5 (Version: 2400) and upgrading to the new Intel Core i5 4460 which does support HD better for what I needed, such as movies and gaming (I only need up to 60FPS).

But other than that, I have been looking either at a portable GPU. The GPU is called a Zotac GeForce GTX 960 4GB (from NVidia). I just want to know if this will fit and will it work well with my PC?

I just want to know if the new Intel Core i5 4460 will fit in the Optiplex 390's motherboard, the same for the Zoatac GeForce GTX 960 4GB GPU.

But I would be interested to see what you have come up with any other CPU/GPU recommendations for this Dell Optiplex 390 Desktop.

Many thanks,

A:New CPU/GPU for Dell Optiplex 390

Because the optiplex comes in three form factors, which one is it? The Desktop ones? or the smaller one?

Anyways, to be able to upgrade to a Haswell processor you'll need a new motherboard aswell (Those with H81 chipset will do). The Zotac GTX 960 will work provided you have enough juice from the PSU to be able to supply the graphics card

I just installed a SSD (Intenso 120GB SATA III) on my Optiplex 390 and bootet from DVD to install Windows 7. I removed the old HDD before. SSD was found during installation and everything worked without any complains. So everything perfect... Windows installation correctly completed. It says...
But after the first reboot after installation, there is just the blinking stroke - so no boot device found.

BIOS settings are correkt:
SATA = configured as ATA
Boot sequence = SATA

I disconnected all devices except the SSD... But still windows is not booting. I also tried to fix the bootloader and I did the "repair startup" thing from the windows DVD three times. Further I created a rescue DVD with AOMEI Partition Assistent. It says Partition is active and bootable...
When I plug in my old HDD to check the SSD in windows I can see the windows installation on the ssd. Read/write works perfect.
Any ideas how to get my Optiplex 390 to boot from the ssd?

Thanks a lot!

A:Optiplex 390 - Booting from SSD not possible

SSD's do not work ATA and therefore cannot be installed that way.  You have to use AHCI and use F6 drivers.   If you dont use F6 drivers windows will not find the drive and refuse to install. SSD's are ADVANCED FORMAT Devices and Require 4k sectors,  WIN7 SP1, and F6 Drivers.  This is not a negotiation this is Required.
The 390 uses the Intel H61 Chipset

Windows 7 Requires INTEL RST 9.6

I just purchased a (barely) used Optiplex 960 from my office (my employers often sell used equipment to employees if they want to get rid of it).  It's in great shape, clean, and all the hardware seems to work, except for the fan speed controller.  I know it's supposed to adjust the speed of the cooling fan depending on how hot the CPU is getting, but it's not doing that.  The fans seem to stay on low / medium speed even when the CPU is pushing 70 degrees C according to Speedfan...which is WAY too hot.  The only way I can get the fan to speed up is by disabling the auto-speed control in the BIOS and leave it on 100% constantly.
Anybody have any suggestions?  Is the temperature controller damaged, or do these systems normally run hot?  Thanks!
