Adding SSD to Dell XPS-8900

Q: Adding SSD to Dell XPS-8900

Apologies if my questions are redundant to other posts in the forum, BUT, I couldn't find ones that covered my questions specifically.
I'm hoping to add a OCZ Trion 150 960GB 2.5" 7mm SATA III Internal Solid State Drive TRN150-25SA3-960G to the Dell XPS 8900 I just purchased. Currently it has a 1TB HDD but no second drive.
My questions:

Is the SSD I intend to purchase compatible with this desktop?
If not, why (ie, what should I look for in an alternate)? And what is a good alternative to the SSD I'm proposing.
Does the XPS 8900 come with spare power and SATA for a second drive?
Do I need a 3.5" mounting adapter?

Thanks in advance. Again, apologies for the simplistic questions, but I'd appreciate a response.

Hey guys,
My Dell xps 8900 have 8Gb ram (4Gb x2) DDR4 2133 UDIMM. Currently it has 2 empty slots. I just bought an 8Gb (8Gb x1) ram DDR4 -2133 UDIMM Crucial stick. I make sure it has the same CL, voltage, etc. I run Crucial scan and it says this stick is compatible with the Dell 8900. My question is can I just add this single stick to the system to make it a total 16Gb, if so which slot do I put it in? so it will end up with 4x2 sticks and 8x1 stick.  I've read somewhere saying the Dell xps 8700 wouldn't boot if the dual slots are not filled up. Mine is a Dell xps 8900, however.

A:Dell xps 8900 adding more ram

Ummm....you have a problem...
The XPS 8900 has 4 RAM slots. So in order to install one new 8GB module, you'd have to uninstall one of the existing 2GB modules.
Even if you do that, the XPS 8900 doesn't support 14 GB of RAM (3x2GB + 1x8GB =14GB). The supported configs are:  8 GB, 16 GB, 24 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB.
And it's always best to install RAM in matched pairs. So you probably need to remove all four 2GB modules and install 2x8 GB to get 16GB. Or, if crucial will take the 8 GB back, you may be able to exchange it for 4x4GB to get 16 GB, assuming that works out cheaper.
EDIT: If you might ever want to go above 16 GB, it might be prudent to use 2x8 GB now which will leave you with 2 empty slots in which you could install 2x4GB (for total of 24 GB), or 2x8GB (for total of 32 GB).

I recently bought ax XPS 8900 desktop that came with 2 x 8 GB RAM sticks.  I would like to add 16 GB more but the Dell.ca site only offers 16 GB sticks for the 8900.  I assume that one has to add 2x8's to fill the four slots and not mix different size sticks.  If correct, how can I get  2x8's from Dell?

A:Adding RAM to XPS 8900

It looks like the same here on the US website.  I would go to crucial or newegg and see if you can find chips in the 2x8 range you are looking for.  Crucial is really good at getting you memory that works with your system.

Hi,
I have an older XPS 8500 with a 32GB SSD installed and would like to take that out and add it to my new XPS 8900, that already has a 32GB SSD installed.
Can I do this (have 2 SSD drives?) First, is this worth  doing? What would be the advantage I could gain? And if doable and advantageous, what do I need to do to install the 2nd SSD? And is there anything I need to be careful of or recommended setup to make the most out of the 2nd (additional) SSD drive?
Thanks!

A:XPS 8900, adding a second mSATA SSD?

In the below picture of the XPS 8900 motherboard, there are two M.2 slots, #9 and #21. We install a WLAN card in #21. But you could remove it and install another mSATA drive.

The next thing to consider is which of the current drives is hosting the operating system. If the operating system resides on the current mSATA drive and the data is on the slower sata 3 drive, there should not be any issues adding another storage drive. Also be sure to create the operating system backup DVD or USB key in case you need to reinstall. Then take pictures of the bios screens to reference when you change the hardware. Take some time and read through this thread.

Haven't yet opened my new (just delivered) XPS8900. It was ordered withb16GB of RAM and have ordered 16 more of RAM for a total of 32GB.
My question is should I set up the computer first, get it running and then the install the extra memory?  Or install the extra memory before setting it up for the first time???
Thanks in advance!!!

A:Adding 16GB to brand new XPS 8900

It should be just fine to install the RAM after the fact. The BIOS should detect the change and configure it accordingly. Windows may just display a message about RAM and the Windows Experience Index.

I have a new Dell XPS 8900 connected to a Dell U2413 monitor using the HDMI to mini-HDMI cable.  When I switch off the monitor (to save the screen and energy), the PC jumps into an unrecoverable power saving mode, shutting down all open applications in doing so.  The mouse and keyboard lock up.  The only way to restart the PC is to press the power button for several seconds (hard reboot).   This began happening recently.  What can be done to fix?

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

Hi, this should be a relatively easy question to answer for those in the know.  If I order up a new 8900 desktop with the GTX 970 card, will it have a DVI port on that card?  I have a monitor I am fond of and want to continue to use, but it only has DVI.

A:Dell XPS 8900 DVI

Typical GTX 960/970/980 has 1 DVI  , 3 Display Port and , 1 HDMI.

I purchased a new Dell XPS 8900 desktop, 64-bit operating system with Windows 10 Home about a month ago. The computer has never made a sound, whether it's Windows system sounds or sounds associated with programs. No sounds come from either the third-party speakers or the headphones, which work with other computers. So far I've tried the following:
Installed the newest version of the RealTek High Definition Audio driver from Dell website (it's green-checked on Control Panel)
Did speaker setup with Dell Audio Manager
Performed speaker setup and testing through Control Panel > Sound (testing produced no sound)
Inspected cable connections multiple times
Performed audio diagnostics through Dell Support website (the computer failed the first test, the second wouldn't continue because of a specious time zone issue, which didn't exist)
The speakers are plugged into the green jack on the back panel, and the headphones are plugged into front headphone jack. One thing I did do was to edit the registry to install the Windows sound mixer, which was not present in Windows 10. I did add a video card and another internal 3TB WD hard drive to the computer, but none of those actions has affected my old computer.
I've tried about everything I know so far. I believe this is likely some kind of software glitch or conflict, but I can't get the computer to make a sound. Control panel tells me that everything is working normally. Does any... Read more

Worked fine until today, 1/1/2016 -- Happy New Year, NOT!
Changed power cable, use a different outlet (other items like LAN router and network printer power just fine). Computer will still not start.
When I plug power into computer power light comes on bright then goes out (this seemed normal before). Then if I push the power button computer does not start.
I do appear to get a orange light sequence of 2-1 after trying to turn it on -- and that continues. May be some sort of POST signal?
I can return the computer (not my first choice) after our upcoming trip. But I'd prefer to get it up and running today. Have some work to do.

A:Dell XPS-8900 Will Not Start

More info. I had four external USB3 drives attached, two powered and two are Seagate Wireless drives -- one of which is recharged via its USB port.
Unplugging only that second Seagate drive lets the machine start up. So the issue may be too much of a current drain on the USB board.
Once booted, the system seems to run fine with that Seagate Wireless drive attached, and it will Restart with it attached -- just not boot from a Shut Down condition.
Not sure I really understand this, but I can live with it.
If someone seems something more insidious in this behavior, please advise; purchased the XPS-8900 at COSTCO and still have about 55 days to return it if it is defective!

Hi I was wondering if I can purchase and use a MSI R9 380 GAMING 4G for my new Dell XpS 8900 computer? I am concerned about the stock psu not being enough power for this card. I belive the stock psu is 460w but this card has a System Requirements Power Consumption of 150W.
And this is the card I would like to use:

A:R9 380 GAMING 4G in a Dell XPS 8900 HELP!

The stock 460w is designed for 150w of video power. That card uses 225w or more.  8 Pin = 150w  + 75w from the X16 slot = 225w if it uses a 6 pin and An 8 pin this is 300w

I am in search of figuring out what to do.  I have had this XPS 8900 for about 2 years.  1st year ran fine. 2nd year I was doing a recovery and our power flickered and nothing is on this desktop.  will power on but nothing.  How do I get recovery disks to put back in what it came with?    Thank you  Chris

A:Dell 8900 Desk Top XPS

Recovery disks will not do any good if the computer won't boot. You need to find and replace the damaged hardware if any. Try turning it on and immediately keep tapping F12 without waiting for any screen to see if you can get into the boot menu to run hardware diagnostics and include a custom test of the hard drive. Try booting to your repair disk.
Report the status of all the lights and explain what you mean by power on but nothing-- nothing on the screen or nothing on the drive or no sounds or fans, etc.

I bought a lightly used Dell XPS 8900 computer. The original owner did not reset the computer. It is erratic. I tried to create a system disk but got an error message. Apparently that's not an option.  I don't know if this system is encrypted or what the problem is. I''ve tried to remove the games the previous owner installed but get an error message with that and cannot uninstall them. Even though I've spent 2 days installing the software I use, I want to reinstall Windows 7 Pro & start over. Can I download the OS from Dell?

I recently purchased the following Dell 8900
Dell XPS x8900-3756BLK Desktop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB HDD + 32 GB SSD) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 with 4GB DDR3

I would like to replace the graphics card (I flight sim a lot) with a GTX 960 4GB DDR5 card, either myself or have a computer repair place do it.
Which specific cards would be easiest to install in my machine - if I search for GTX 960, I see all kinds of different length cards, 1 and 2 fans, etc.
I'd like to purchase the following card, if it will be easily installed...
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 4GB GDDR5 PCiE Graphics Cards GV-N960OC-4GD
Would a new graphics card be difficult to install myself?   What is involved?
Thank you,
Steve

A:Which GTX 960 Can I use to upgrade my Dell XPS 8900

The XPS 8900 and 8700 share the same case so if you look in this thread you'll see the cards that fit and the cards that needed some case cutting.
en.community.dell.com/.../19611037
I can personally vouch for the the MSI GTX 970 gaming 4GB fits so check the size (length and height) and if less it should fit without issue.
If you can wait a few weeks or maybe a month, the GTX 1080 looks to be an amazing card for the price and power draw. It is going to be slightly more expensive, however much more capable.
The install is easy. search for youtube videos and you should find one.
edit: and you can sell your GTX 745 on ebay and recoup some of the cost.

I have been reading about installing a 1tb SSD drive in my unit and keeping the 2tb as drive D/E. I would clone my existing drive to the SSD using EaseUS, remove all the data which would remain on the original drive. Has anyone been through this scenario and could you send me the correct procedure.
Thanks,

Recently I moved my XPS 8900's internals to a bigger case. When powering on, it appears to all work but when it gets to the dell screen, it goes black. I can press f2 or f12 for the setup menus but it never gets there. It appears to be a POST problem, with blinking power button and keyboard capslock and scroll lock LEDs. It blinks in a pattern of 3-7-1-6. I cannot seem to get it to boot. Anyone have a clue what the problem might be?
Thanks,

I recently purchased an XPS 8900 with Win 10 Home installed. I want to run the OS & apps off an SSD, but the methods to get that to happen have not worked so far, namely cloning the HD to the SSD. Pretty much everything I've seen on the forums here and on the internet don't seem to take into consideration UEFI, which has proven be an enormous PITA in this process, as i have to keep switching between UEFI and Legacy modes to get the system to (try to) boot off the SSD.
The install is fresh - i.e. no user data yet, so I'm not worried about losing that data. The recovery partitions are intact. I created a recovery USB drive from within Windows 10. Any guidance on this would be welcome. Thanks!

Hello and thank you very much --
Yesterday the cursor disappeared so I turned the pc off manually.  When I turned it back on after a few seconds all was OK.  Cursor disappeared again, so I tried the same thing, but the computer now won't turn back on at all.
The start button lights up amber then immediately goes out.  No sounds.  I have unplugged and plugged back in all the cords from wall, router, modem.  The lights on modem and router are all normal,  The laptop I am using as I type right now is hooked up to the exact same system, I'm not using the laptop wirelessly.  I have also unplugged the power and held down the start button for 10 seconds as was suggested on Dell's website.  But pc still won't respond.  If I unplug and replug  the whole thing from the wall or plug and replug the AC adapter, I see the Dell logo for a moment on the screen and then the message it is going to power saving mode, then black.
The pc that won't turn on is a Dell 8900 which I bought 6 months ago and has worked perfectly up to now.  I use Windows10.
What should I do next?

Contact Dell Tech Support for warranty support.
Might be power supply or video card.  If you use a surge protector or power strip, remove those and try connecting PC directly to the wall outlet.

I started having problems with the mouse not waking up. I would have to un plug it from the back of the tower. Dell replaced that computer and I just got another one lase Wednesday and set it up on Friday. I did add a printer and Acrobat Reader and I noticed that the computer came not to go in to sleep mode. I changed the settings and it seemed to be working and now is doing the same thing. It went to sleep and I tried restarting it. That did not work and I used the arrow keys to shut it down and then restarted it and the mouse worked. Is this a windows problem or a computer problem? does any one know or have this problem it's windows 10.

I am planning on adding an SSD and doing a clean install of Win 10 on my new XPS 8900. I've spent a lot of time researching this and have notes and tutorials to follow that I feel comfortable with. The one area that I have not found good answers and only general advice is on reinstalling the drivers. The advice has been to go to the Dell download center and get them there.
To make sure I end up with the correct drivers on the SSD, I first took a look at what I currently have in the Device Manager and compared them to the list of drivers on the Dell driver page specific to my computer tag #. That has been an exercise in frustration. I have lots of questions. Please be patient. Hopefully this will help others also.
Let's start with the video drivers. Device Manager vs Dell list:

I have the GTX 745 and the Dell config on the Dell site lists it correctly. So why doesn't it show up on the list specific to my computer? Instead it lists an AMD. So, now I select to show all drivers for all XPS 8900s and it adds the following driver:

Even here, the GTX 745 isn't listed. Why? Can anyone from Dell explain why they don't have the driver listed for the most common graphics card installed on current XPS 8900s?

So I just bought a Dell XPS 8900 i7 6700 from the outlet.  I intend to upgrade to a a newer z170m mobo that will support non-k oc, memory upgrade to faster memory that will oc, bigger psu, and gtx 980ti, and clone old drive to ssd drive.   What issues will I have with drivers, licensing of windows 10, etc..  I'm going to use a water cooler for the cpu.

A:Dell XPS 8900 i7 6700 upgrade questions

Huh?Sorry, what you're suggesting makes no sense.
The Windows license is LOCKED to the Dell motherboard.  You can NOT use a Dell OEM license on a non Dell motherboard. The XPS 8900 case does not support a water cooler.  Your only option would be to put the radiator through the front, and then you'd really need an air barrier to separate the exhaust from the air intake area above. You should also upgrade the power supply.   You'll also want to change the DRAM. So, you're taking about another motherboard, another case, water cooling, and another Windows License.  You can get a Windows 10 license for under $100.
So, by buying the XPS 8900, you got a CPU.  Imho, buying an i7-6700K is better.  They are specially screen to support higher clock rates.  In fact, you'll be lucky if a non-K can clock as high as the base clock of the 6700K.  Intel has been trying to support the K demand.  So, people can forget about "being lucky" and getting a non-K that can clock as high a a K-version.  The 6700K cpus are coming down in price.
Fwiw, I strongly suggest getting an ASUS motherboard.Good Luck.

I have been a Dell customer for many, many years and have never had a problem with order deliveries until now.  I ordered a Dell XPS 8900 special edition on 7/16 and have had three different estimated delivery dates posted on the websites (all wrong), the latest of which was today.  I have been in contact with customer service and told of a parts shortage (after placing the order of course).  This is highly unlike any experience I have ever had with Dell.  Is anyone else experiencing delivery delays and inaccurate delivery estimates, or am I just "lucky"?

Hi Guys,
I myself and a friend manage to change the factory XPS 8900 CPU fan cooler to Corsair Hydro H100i GTX liquid cooler but there is one thing which is bothering us. My system will test the corsair liquid cooling fan in very high speed every time I boot up the system. We manage to get rid the fan not detected screen but we don't know why system is still test the fan without showing us error. Is there any way to bypass or disable it? I need help for this.
Much appreciated.

I have an XPS8900 with a Dell supplied 750 TI card fitted.  I would like to replace this with an Asus Strix 960 GTX board.  It is longer than existing board and I am not sure if it will fit due to ram slots and some power plugs for HD etc.
Has anyone fitted the type of card to an 8900 and does it physically fit on mboard.
Thanks

Just received a Dell XPS8900 i7 with the 27" 4k monitor. As soon as I plugged it in it started running. It immediately went to an amber flashing On/Off button. Tech support says it is probably a bad mobo. I also couldn't get the monitor to work. From what I can gather the DirectPort cable is DP on one end and mini-DP on the other. Is that correct? Can I use a full DP cable (not mini on the one end)?

A:Dell XPS 8900 dead on arrival. Question about DP cable.

Below is the back of an XPS 8900. Near the bottom is the discrete added video card 10/11/12. If your XPS 8900 came with a discrete added video card, you should connect the monitor to it, not the middle 6/7 onboard video ports. We can assist more if you can provide the specific discrete added video card model.

I realize that this is not a "Flight Simulator X" forum, but I have a hardware issue somewhere with my Dell 8900 and am trying to figure it out.
Flight Sim is an intense game resources wise, but mainly on the CPU, which in my case is 4.0 Ghz i7-6700 so no issue there, Ram is 16 GB and I just installed (thanks to help from this forum!) a new GTX 960 - all specs are more than enough for Flightsim.
So I am puzzled that in the simulation I am having problems where the "textures" that cover the simulated ground, aircraft, lights, etc. take forever to load - I'll be flying along and suddenly the game will start struggling to load textures in areas of add on scenery (Orbx Pacific Northwest etc.) - everything looks great but then things gradually get blurry, I lose the textures off parts of the plane etc.
I should have a GREAT PC for running FSX, but there is a bottleneck to texture loading somewhere.
I suspect maybe the hard drive - while flying that little blue light on the top of the PC (which I believe indicates the hard drive is working) is blinking almost non-stop - it may be that the hard drive isn't feeding the game it's textures quickly enough?
Also - in case it is a hard drive speed issue - what would be the easiest way to install a new, fast hard drive just for FSX?   Would the open PCI-E slot I spotted next to where I mounted my graphics card take a SSD drive?   If so, which ones would be of the "plug and play" variety?

Hello,

Getting pretty close to deciding on a new Dell XPS 8900 desktop.

Seems like all the major brands have the same horror stories re service, returns, etc., and have more or less come to the conclusion it is pretty much the "luck of the draw" irrespective of which brand you get.
Agree ?

The Dell XPS 8900 seems to come in a few different flavors.

As I've mentioned, my family does no gaming.
Do a lot of photo and video work and viewing, YouTube viewing, internet surfing, etc.
Pretty much the Sr. Citizen kinda home stuff.

a. Would appreciate your opinion if it is worth an additional $ 100 to go from a:

6 th Gen Intel Core i5 - 6400 with 6M Cache

to a:
6 th Gen Intel Core i7 - 6700 with 8 M Cache

b. And, for the video Card: another $ 100 to go from a:

GT730 NVidia GeForce 2 GB DDR3

to a
GTX 745 NVidia GeForce 4 GB DDR3

Would I likely notice any differences for either upgrade ? If so, how ?

Thanks for opinions,
Bob

Bought an XPS 8900 from Best Buy May 2016. Used as stock config since then as a home CAD machine.
I think it came stock with a GeoForce 730, maybe ?
Had it hooked up to a single Dell monitor via the DVI cable.
I took an NVidia Quadro 2000 2GB video card from an older XPS 8700 that I had installed it in and had been running fine, plug and play, and removed the GeoForce 730 from my new XPS 8900 and installed the Quadro 2000 in the new 8900, expecting no problems.
The Quadro has DVI out and two (2) Displayport out. I tried the DVI, no luck. The tried the Displayport, still no luck. Monitor is asleep, does not respond.
I know this card is a little older, but I am not sure why it would not be supported on the 8900, when I just plug and played it on the 8700, no problem?????
is the NVidia Quadro 2000 not supported for some reason? why?
Is there any way I can make this work ont he XPS 8900?

IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE OF THESE UNITS ON CLEARANCE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.  You originally quoted me one of these units at $814 on the 11th of July. You also said that you had some leeway in being able to lower that price.. I'm ready to buy one today if you could lower the quote to $775 inclusive of Tax.

I have a Dell XPS 8900 Special Edition that I purchased a couple months ago. I would like to upgrade the OEM GeForce GTX 745 that it came with to a EVGA GTX 960.I have the Dell XPS 8900 (i7-6700k processor), 32gb memory, 2tb HDD + 32gb m.2 SSD cache, Dell UP2516D monitor, and Windows 10 Pro. I will be adding a second Dell UP2516D monitor soon and later will add an SSD and move the OS and applications to that.
My needs aren't gaming. Primarily I do business applications (MS-Office, including Access and Project), finance and investing, and a lot of photo and video editing.  The photo editing software will use the GPU if I upgrade.
EVGA suggested either of the following, based on what would fit:
http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-1961-KR
http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-3963-KR
These cards are almost identical except;
#1 is 10.1" long, has 2 BIOS, 2 fans, and uses 160 watts for $170
#2 is 6.8" long, has 1 BIOS, 1 fan, and uses 128 watts for $160
I thought I would replace the graphics card myself, but once I opened the case, I wondered if either card will even fit.  I've seen that other people have swapped out their graphics card, so it must be possible.
When I look in my case, the existing graphics card is a single slot.  Both of these cards are dual slot.  Also, it looks like there are some transistors right next to the existing card.  When you install a dual slot card, ... Read more

Hello,

Really totally confused about this, and would be most appreciative for some help and suggestions on.

Have a new Dell XPS 8900 desktop PC.
Has Realtek integrated audio, apparently. (ALC3861 7.1)
I imagine it?s pretty much the same setup for all of their PC?s with Realtek integrated audio.

Presently use the Green output jack in the rear to feed a pair of Logitech Desktop Z-200 desktop speakers. Works just fine.

I would like to now add the following:

Have an output from a radio (Home Patrol scanner) that has a Line-Out
Jack. Would like to feed this into pc, and be able to select either the normal
pc audio (which now is outputted on the green jack) OR this new input.

a. What input jack on the pc should I use for the radio?s output (Line Out) ?
I?m thinking the BLUE one. Is this correct ?

I would want it to also, of course, be outputted on the green jack to the desktop speakers.

b. I looked all over of every pc screen I could think of, but could find no option
for selecting (switching) between the pc normal output, and this new extra
audio input.

Where and how do I do this selectio/switching, please ? Caveats in doing ?

Hello and thank you very much --
Yesterday the cursor disappeared so I turned the pc off manually.  When I turned it back on after a few seconds all was OK.  Cursor disappeared again, so I tried the same thing, but the computer now won't turn back on at all.
The start button lights up amber then immediately goes out.  No sounds.  I have unplugged and plugged back in all the cords from wall, router, modem.  The lights on modem and router are all normal,  The laptop I am using as I type right now is hooked up to the same system, I'm not using the laptop wirelessly.  I have also unplugged the power and held down the start button for 10 seconds as was suggested on Dell's website.  But pc still won't respond.
The pc that won't turn on is a Dell 8900 which I bought 6 months ago and has worked perfectly up to now.  I use Windows10.

I have a 1 month old Dell XPS 8900 and my Avira virus scan flagged Dell Foundation Services as a virus.  It came pre-installed with Windows 10 and Dell Foundation Services.
Specifically:
C:\Program Files\Dell\Dell Foundation Services\DCF.Branding.dll
[DETECTION] Contains suspicious code HEUR/APC (Cloud) [WARNING] The file could not be copied to quarantine! [WARNING] Error in ARK library [NOTE] The file is scheduled for deleting after reboot. [NOTE] It is recommended to restart your computer in order to finish the repair.
Has anyone else experienced this?  Shall I just let Avira delete this dll?  Will that break the application?  Should I uninstall Dell Foundation Services?  What does Dell Foundation Services do?  Is it needed?  Thanks

A:DCF.Branding.dll flagged as a virus (Dell Foundation Services) on new XPS 8900

It is probably safe. The HEUR/APC code you see is telling you that it found a process that triggered their heuristics engine. The heuristics engine scans running processes, and flags things that attempt to modify files on your computer.
See: http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/Dell-Foundation-Services-141858-program.aspx

I recently bought a Dell XPS 8900 desktop and Dell U2414H monitor. After hooking the two together with a Displayport to Displayport mini, everything seemed to be fine. There was a signal and the display was on. I turned off the monitor and put the computer in sleep mode for a little while. When I returned and turned both systems on, there was no picture. Just a statement saying the monitor was going into power saving mode. I tried unplugging and replugging the monitor back in and that didn't work. I got the same problem after connecting the computer to a different monitor so I suspect it's the desktop. I also get the same problem using the HDMI port instead. The only thing that seems to fix this is by doing a cold shut down and restart of the desktop. Can anyone tell me what the problem is under these circumstances?

I purchased a Dell XPS 8900 Desktop recently with Windows 7 Professional OP System pre loaded. The first thing I did was to make a list of the list of all system components, the date and version of each. Next I went to Dell's Web Site, enter the computer tag number, and created a list of all Dell updates for this computer. Then I downloaded and installed all component updates except the BIOS update which was the same version however there was no date listed for it.
I have experienced hang ups and freezes from the beginning of using this computer and I continue to have the same freezes and hang ups. With the number of complaints of the same problem regardless of operating system you would think Dell Management and sales would recognize that there is a legitimate problem with this computer and assign their engineers to research the problem and issue either a recall or a fix to XPS 8900 users. I am a long time computer professional with over 45 years in the IT community. I have always trusted Dell and recommended their products to family and friends as well as contacts in the IT community and prospective buyers. Dell can either acknowledge the problem with this product and take appropriate corrective action or they can ignore the problem which will not go away but the buyers of Dell products will when the word gets out. I no longer feel comfortable buying or recommending Dell computers to or for anyone.

I've heard it is good to defragment your hard drive, especially for the flight simming that I use my machine for.
But my machine has a SSD for caching fed by a regular hard drive - and the normal defrag utility won't let you at this "hidden" traditional drive.
Is there a way to safely defrag my actual behind the scenes hard drive?
Thanks,
Steve

A:How do I "Defrag" my Hard Drive - Dell XPS 8900?

Don't worry about it. The cache SSD is small and used only to store files that Windows needs in a hurry or when memory (RAM) gets full.
Probably gets rewritten frequently, so unlikely to affect performance, even if it ever got fragmented.
If it ain't broke, don't break it!

Get a 22" Dell monitor and connect it to the vga port on your laptop. There is an Fn + (some other key) that will enable the external monitor. You can press the Fn+(some other key) combination so that either the laptop display is used, the external display is used or have it set so both are used for the display. Typically the combination is the Fn key plus one of the F keys at the top of you keyboard.

So I can add any hard drive on top of the 6gig it has (ie a 30 gig), or replace the existing 6gig with a 40 gig, I think.

Question is can I just go buy any old type hard drive or is there something special because I'm working on a Dell?

Thanks
Will

A:Adding/upgrading a Dell HD

No, there's nothing special for the drive in the GX1's and you're not limited to a 32GB, the common limit on these older computers, hard drive limit. However you will need one of these to surpase that limit: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=promise

Oddly, if a 40GB drive works then then next common limit is 74 - 80GB. Also thats 32GB (40) per drive - you could have 4 by 32GB drives if you like.

I have an old P1/233MHz w/13.6 GB HD running Win98SE and a Dell P4/1.3 w/20 GB HD running WinMe. I wanted to move my 13.6 into the Dell and run it as (C)master (move 20 w/Me to (D)slave), clean the 20 and use it for content. Dell says that will void warranty, that 13 must be slave. Questions:
1. How to get around that? (switch HD's and switch back if need be?) Or just leave be until I install WinXP? Any advice, comments, opinions?
*note: 13.6 has about 4000 hrs. on it; 20 has almost none and has lots of programs installed.
2. Whichever is master/slave, is there any problem moving a HD with another O.S. into slave?

"MODULES MUST BE ORDERED AND INSTALLED IN PAIRS for Dual Channel mode.

This system supports both DDR400 and DDR333. When mixed, the memory speed will default to DDR333."

So here's our question; we wanted to add two 1 gig sticks of PC3200. That leaves two empty slots. Can we use the old memory with the new, for a total of 2 1/4 gigs?

Hello, and thank you in advance for any help.
I have a 4 year old Dell Dimension 2400 running XP.
It has 256meg of memory in it, and is running slow these days. So I wanted to increase its memory to something like 1gig. Thats affordable to me.
I have heard that I cannot simply add a 1gig memory stick to this computer.... It would not properly work and give me 1.256gig.
So I have to remove the 256meg first. I understand that OK.
But I was told that I must populate "both" memory slots in this computer..... they cannot be unbalanced. So to get 1gig I would have to buy two 500meg memory sticks.
Is that true, or can I just remove my 256meg stick and simply install one 1gig stick that I could buy at Office Max, or Best Buy, or a place like that?
Thanks again for any help.

Adding memory should not necessitate a PSU upgrade unless you're really currently borderline. Changing the CPU not be a problem unless there's a very big difference between you have now & the one you intend to put.

I doubt you'll be able to run a Core 2 Duo on that machine though but I'm not sure as I can't seem to find any info on such a possibility.

Hi, I just bought a dell xps 15 9550 with 6th gen i7, 8GB RAM and 256gb ssd. Is it possible to add an extra SSD for the remaining 2.5 inches hard disk slot. If it's possible do i need to buy the connecting cable for SSD too or does that cable already included there?
Thanks in advance,

A:Adding extra SSD for dell xps 15 with 256gb SSD

Thanks for the post.
Just one quick question.  I am trying to install a 2.5" Samsung Evo 850.  Do I need to install another device driver to get the BIOS recognized the SSD?  My BIOS version is 1.1.19.  After the installation, Windows 10 can access the SSD on and off, and I cannot see it from the BIOS unlike the original PCIE SSD that came with XPS 15.  Thanks.

I am trying to add a 2nd Western Digital 320 G hard drive with a cage to mount it in for a Dell Dimension 2400Intell Celeron 2.4 GHz PC with 1 G of SDRAM memory. I have a 120 G Western Digital HD, 2 CD/DVD combo drives, and a floppy drive connected now to the MOBO. I have a new 80 pin IDE cable with connectors for master, slave and the card/or mother board. It is a miniATX motherboard. The BIOS is AU6. It is WindowsXP Home Edition SP3.

I have recently installed a Masscool XWT-RC018 3-Port SATA & IDE PCI Card - 2 Internal SATA, External SATA, Internal IDE, SATA 1.5Gbps Support. When ever I try to connect the new hard drive, the PC fails to boot.

I have tried switching from Cable Select to "master" and "slave", changing the BIOS to auto detect, and switching the boot sequence.

What else can I do to make this work? Re-configure the cabling and boot sequence? Change/add the jumper shunts? Do I need to adjust the software or hardware for the PCI 3 slot since briefly my son's friend had installed a video graphics accelerator card that I have removed and uninstalled its drivers, since it was causing my PC to crash?

A:Adding 2nd HD to a Dell Dimension 2400 PC

Either the Dell power supply is too weak or the motherboard is too proprietary to handle the SATA controller

I have done a memory finder on newegg and located sticks for the desktop I bought used. I have one question, however. The manual (found at dell.com) shows 200 and 266 MHz, but doesn't give the PC number, such as PC 700 or PC 3200. Newegg shows memory sticks for this desktop with higher MHz. Please advise me--can I purchas a higher MHz number?
thanks!

I inherited a 2005 Dell Dimension 2400 from a friend recently and would like to know the benefits of installing another hard drive to supplement the existing unit. The Dell PC processor is is a Celeron 2.40GHz, 80GB hard drive with 256MB DDR Sdram shared memory. It runs windows XP home edition. The 2nd hard drive that I'm thinking about installing is a Western digital 120GB, 7200 RPM Caviar IDE-ATA interface, compatible with windows XP. I also inherited it with the computer.
I intend to do graphics work with the PC, and my question is will the 2nd hard drive improve the performance, or would I be better served to increase the memory before adding the extra drive?
Also, how hard is it to install another hard drive and/or additional memory? Is there any type of programming that needs to be done besides just physically installing the unit?
The other problem I have is that the Western Digital drive is missing the installation manual and programming disc. Are these easy to get from the manufacturer?

Thanks for any and all replies

Hey everyone,

The display on my old Dell Studio 1735 died and I just got a refurbished one from Dell, same model. I'm wanting to add the HDD from the old computer to the new Dell in its second HDD bay. I have it removed but am not seeing anywhere to attach the connection. Is there a different caddy for the second drive bay? I thought I could just take the old computer's HDD and swap it into the new one's second bay since it has the caddy and connection already. I'm not seeing a connection anywhere hear the second bay,

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Question adding second HDD to Dell Studio 1735

Looks like you need a new caddy. As it says, this is only for the second bay so it must be different to the other one.

Dear All,

I would like to add my old master drive from my old computer (WD 1 TB SATA) to my new XPS8900.  Any advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.  I have looked at the service manual, but that did not seem to have info on doing this-or perhaps I was not well-versed enough to make sense of it.  I also want to make sure it is read as the slave drive and not the boot drive.  I will then go in and delete all the old windows files (I have information on the drive I would like to keep if possible).
thank you, Don

A:Adding 2nd hard drive to dell xps8900

"Master" and "slave" drives  went out with the dodo bird!
Should be simple to install the new HDD.

Power off and unplug the PC
Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
Open the case and insert the HDD into the drive bay, and install the screws to hold it, according to page 55 in the manual
Connect a SATA data cable to the HDD and then to an available SATA port on the motherboard. The boot HDD is connected to SATA0 (blue connector) and the optical drive probably to SATA1. You can connect the second HDD to SATA2 (see motherboard layout on page 16).
Connect a SATA power cable from the power supply to the new drive
Close up
Reboot and immediately press F2 to go into BIOS setup. Look at the SATA port entry for whichever SATA port you used for the added HDD and make sure it's Enabled.
Then look at the Boot Sequence in BIOS setup and put the added drive last, or delete it from the boot sequence
Save any changes to BIOS setup, exit and reboot.

That should be all it takes...

I have a dell dimension 3000 pent 4 windows XP. The current graphics card appears to be "onboard" my son is having problems playing some games and I was told I could add a better graphics card. Not knowing a whole lot about computers, I purchased a BFG Tech Nvidia 6200OC graphics card. I put it in an available slot in the computer and attempted to install it, messages appear it is working properly but.... I think there is some conflict between the "onboard" one and the installed one I want to use. Is there a way to "disable" an onboard graphics card? and once I do disable if possiable THEN do I plug the monitor into the new card?
Thanks for your help, ....my sons REALLY thank you....

Your manual will tell you how to disable your onboard graphics. If you haven't got it then visit the dell website.

Hello All... Thanks in advance for any help! I am trying to add a second hard dirve to a Dell Dimension 4700. The driving I am trying to add is the drive that went bad. New drive works great.

I have it connected properly I believe and the Bios recognizes it and it is turned on in Bios. I have a ton of family photos on this drive and I need to retrieve them.

Would like to do this without sending this drive out. Thanks

A:Adding Second Drive Dell Dimension 4700 won't recognize Help!

well if it is a bad drive, maybe its already dead. You will do better if you get a hard drive enclosure 3.5, hook up the drive and run a file recovery software. I dont believe windows will recognize it normally...

You don't. It should see it attached in the right place on the single cable with two connector and the twisted bit. A is the end one, B is in the middle.

I just added 512MB memory to the existing 512MB that came with the PC. When I booted up the machine I could smell something burning (like the smell of a soldering iron) and the computer did not boot at all. Nothing came up on the monitor and it indicated no signal was coming through. The power light was on, I could hear the motor running. The diagnostic lights on the back of the PC indicate that no memory is detected. I tried all combinations of the two memory cards in the two slots, but no luck at all.

So what burned out? The memory, the mother board? Do you think the hard drive is still OK? What do you suggest I do? I live in San Francisco -- is there someone local you recommend? I need to fix this problem ASAP.

Please email me with your answer -- [email protected]

HELP! and thanks.

I have a couple of questions about adding memory to my Dell laptop. Will a standard
"256 MB DDR SDRAM, PC2100 / 266 MHz" card work (bought locally at Walmart or RadioShack) along with the factory installed 256MB?

Secondly, where can I get step by step instructions (with pictures) on how to add the memory?

And where can I get a teeny-tiny phillips screwdriver to open the memory compartment?

My wife has a DELL inspiron 530s.....I am trying to persuade her to let me fit a graphic card I have....a Geforce GT-730 1GB DDR5 OC boost edition.

she does not play games, but does a fair bit of web browsing and uses MS office word a lot....

what I would like to know ( for me its a no brainer, as I already have the card, have no use for it and being low profile will fit the dell perfectly ) is what benefit should she expect to see and or will it give some measure of future proofing as websites become more complex....?

thanks

A:what benefit in adding graphic card to dell inspiron 530s

I don't think it's going to be worth the effort given what she's using it for. And what is the output on the power supply?? Factor that in if you go ahead and try to install the graphic card.

But if it were me.. I wouldn't do it.

I'm trying to add a second hard drive to my dell dimension 8200 on a Windows XP system. The original hard drive was set as Cable Select. I moved the jumper to Master and set the second hard drive to slave. I attached the ribbon cable such that the end is plugged into the original drive, and the middle connector is plugged into the second drive.

Now, in the Bios, both drives appear, with the original showing as "primary drive 0" and the second drive as "primary drive 1." However, when I boot up, the second drive does not appear in Windows. Shouldn't the second drive appear as a secondary drive?

What do I need to do? Thanks!

sounds like you have done all the correct things - BUT is the drive you added formated , or possibly faulty

have a look in disk management
start>control panel > administrative tools> computer management > disk management
is there a
Drive 0
and a
Drive 1
whats the status of the drive 1 ?

Someone (my boss) has asked me if I can add a video controller card with an HDMI output to their Dell 5100/e510 desktop PC. They bought an HDTV for Christmas and it has an HDMI input. They want to now be able to connect it to the PC. The PC only has on board video out of a VGA connector.

There is one PCIe 1x slot and one PCIe 16x slot on the motherboard. I have barely become familiar with AGP. PCIe is foreign to me. Some of the cards that I have found on line that may work have all kinds of features like multiple analog and digital video outputs and video inputs. Some of the cards also seem to need a separate PSU connection. One of my concerns is that I have all ready added two more hard drives to the PC a while ago and the power supply is rated at 305 watts output. I would like to pick a card for him that will give him a good picture without dropped frames or artifacts but will not overload the power supply.

Any suggestions for a suitable video card that should work with the existing hardware? Should I tell him that he will probably need need a new PSU with more output power? He says he does not need any other outputs than HDMI and he does not need any video inputs. I suppose it would be nice if the card supported HDCP for future use.

case cooling can be an issue. depending on the card you may need to move the HDD bay and do some trimming.
