My laptop doesn't wake up (black screen)

Q: My laptop doesn't wake up (black screen)

So my laptop has the latest drivers and updates installed but ever since I've installed Windows 7 I get a black screen after trying to wake it up from sleep mode. When I put it to sleep (close the lid or do it via the start menu), everything works fine. It gos to sleep and the light starts blinking. But once I open the lid I can hear the sound of the hard drive starting & the wi-fi button starts to glow, it literally resumes from sleep but the screen stays black. Everything else works fine but not being able to put it in sleep mode is really a big problem for me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I've started to have a number of debilitating problems with my lumia 950, which is a shame because they are the same problems that made me leave android for the WP platform. To start off, my phone has been randomly restarting. The restarting seems to have started after the anniversary update version 1607. There's nothing common between one reset to the next, just that they become more frequent as battery life reduces (starts at around 80%). This is also sometimes accompanied by a streak yellow across the screen. I don't know if this is relevant or not.
My second issue, which has been happening the longest, is that the screen will sometimes be completely off when I wake up the phone. I will put the phone into sleep with the power button, and when I wake it up with the power button the screen is black. I know the phone is awake because windows hello will try to sign me in. I have reason to believe that the touch digitizer is also still working. This is fixed either by trying to sleep cycle the phone or by holding down the power button until the phone prompts me to power it off. This seems to wake the screen up. the screen also sometimes wakes up when windows hello signs me in, but this is rare. This problem has become less frequent since the anniversary update.
My third problem is that sometimes the touch digitizer doesn't work on wake. This is similar to my last problem, except that it always goes away by sleep cycling my phone. This problem has also become less prominent ... Read more

Ok I have my dad's laptop, can't figure out what's wrong with it. It's a 1 year old Hewlett-Packard, windows vista SP 1.

I'm tempted to just restore it. But if it's an easy fix, I'd rather not go to the
hassle of making discs.

We have a trend micro antivirus thing on here. It hasn't found anything.

Basically what it's doing is, every so often, the screen will just go black. It doesn't come back on, you have to shut the computer down and restart to fix it. The computer is not shut off though. You can still mess with the volume and turn the wireless thing on and off, via the onboard controls.

So I'm lost as to what to do. Tried googling it, couldn't find anything real specific. Thanks for any help in advance!

When I close the lid of my HP dv2045 the computer goes into sleep mode. That's good, but about 10% of the time it doesn't want to wake up again. The "fix" I use is to give it a hard shutdown and reboot. Power settings are typical for a laptop. I'm wondering if anybody knows of a method of waking it with a dark screen up.

I am having a problem that is driving me nuts! I have an HP Presario x1460CA laptop about three years old. Occasionally it will not wake up from sleep or standby mode. The computer works as I can connect it to an external monitor to see the screen. The screen is black and the back light works as when I press the button that turns off the screen when you close the lid, the screen gets darker. I have upgraded the BIOS and XP is upgraded to SP2.

SP is Home Edition V2002 SP2
Processor is an Intel Pentium(R) M at 1500 MHz
598 MHz, 512 MB RAM

Eventually it will come on after a hard boot. I have had several technicians look at it and they can't seem to find anything amiss.

Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB968389)

It?s still in dual screen mode as I can see a taskbar window fly to the second monitor. But I have to sleep and wake again to get it to come back on.

Anyone else experience something like this? I don?t remember it ever happening before and was wondering if it could be the patch.

I am having an issue that only started at the weekend, and doing system restore hasn't solved it.
Running Windows 7 Ultimate, fully patched up with hibernation enabled.
If I wake my computer using my remote it works fine, but during the night my computer wakes up to do some maintenance/updating. Normally it would go back to sleep using MCE Standby tool.
Only changes made this week were some MS updates, and now it doesn't go back to sleep. When I turn the TV on all I get is a black screen, and I have to do a forced reboot.

Can anyone help?

A:Black screen after maintenance wake

Look through Computer lags every couple seconds, and especially the parts referring to the event viewer logs and system file checks. Those logs should include information regarding the power/sleep cycles and any errors associated with those cycles. That would be the first place to check. Also, make sure all drivers are up to date, and re-install your graphics and network drivers even if they are up to date. It is possible you have corrupted drivers that are preventing the system from entering sleep again, and the network and display card adapter drivers are likely culprits with these types of problems.
To fully re-install a driver, use the following steps.Click Start Menu
Right Click My Computer/Computer
Click Manage
Click Device Manager from the list on the left
Find the device you are trying to uninstall by expanding the appropriate set of devices
Right click the device
Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
Restart your computer
Install the latest driver for the device once Windows starts.

Alternatively:Login as an adminstrative user.

Click Control Panel
Click Hardware and Sound

A:Lenovo y700 screen doesn't wake up from sleep

Hi bouga ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Checking on the support site for   Notebook IP Y700-15ISK I7 , seems no BIOS update needed for this model.
Typically even on Win Vista and Windows 7 that issue with sleep has been related to hybrid features.

Method 1 : You may try to disable it using the cmd elevated for the command  powercfg -h off .
Check on this video link for the guide steps

Method 2 : Setting Power option to High Performance instead of conservation mode . then manualy setting sleep on the start icon

Continue to apply neccessary updates that may correct this issue but for the time being , you can use Method 2 as alternate solution if method 1 fail to correct it.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Hi

I have win 8 installed for a few weeks now which I have been working on and off playing in a bios duel boot setup to see if I like win 8. (while keeping my win 7 setup)

Every thing has been fine until for the first time I put the computer into sleep , after I tried to wake it up the computer, started up but the screen was still in the standby state. I then had to do a reset as this was the only way I could get the computer to start.
It went through the boot process and opened to the desktop it a state which showed it had booted from a hibernation state (doc left on desk top open how I left it)
I tied a few options I had read in the forums like turning off "powercfg -H off" and rebooted. but this did not fix anything.
I tried a selective start up in misconfig like a safe mode start and this time when I went to try sleep then tried to wake the computer, the monitor at least started up from its sleep mode but was black (blank)

The win 7 x64 on the duel boot sleeps/wakes fine with no problems. I guess the only difference between them is the win 8 is installed on a SSD

any further information you need please ask

A:Win 8 Pro x64 After wake from sleep black (blank) screen

Just an update, Been doing a lot of searching of the internet about my problem and I was about to give in, I kept thinking it was my GPU drivers. But I was wrong

I was thinking I might have had some ideas off people from my post, but I guess without it crashing and giving a bsod it made it hard to find what was the problem.

Just to give help to anyone else reading this post I think I have found the answer . I though I had the most up to date drivers for my ACHI controller from the Asus website which where newer than what I had installed.

But once I found out that I had a Intel 5 series chipset, I found some more up to date drivers on Intel's website. Even though when I went there before and ran an online scan it did not offer any updated drivers (I guess Asus had changed them so Intel did not know them to update?)

So the moral I guess is if you think you might have up to date drivers maybe sometimes you need to keep looking, Hope this helps someone as this is a great forum.

Hi fellow HP users and forum moderators, I am using a Spectre X360 purchased in Australia and currently using it in Australia. My problem is that the laptop sometimes does not wake up from sleep/hibernate. The screen is pitch black and keyboard lighting button is functional but I tried every single button on the keybpard and pressed the trackpad. Nothing happens or responds to this. Is this a software issue? HP software or Windows 10 64bit issue?Maybe a hardware like SSD playing up? My SSD is a Samsung 256GB one. The only way to make my laptop work again is to press the on/off/sleep button for 5 seconds then it would force to shutdown then I press again to boot it up. This is getting annoying. I am writing a report for university and suddenly after having a short break or so and opening my laptop the screen is black does not want to wake up. Any solution(s) to this? Thanks in advance!

I usually lower the laptop lid when i want to put it into sleep mode; after the windows 10 update, this stopped working. I tried putting it into sleep mode from the start menue. This causes the screen to become black, but power to remain on ( I can see this from a steady light from the power button whereas sleep would have a flashing power button). The laptop's fan also increases in speed. When I try to wake the laptop, nothing happenes; I have tried to use ctrl+alt+delete, however this also does not work. I am ususally forced to resort to a manual shut down via holding the power button for a few second and restarting the laptop. I have tried updating the display adapters, restarted the laptop, and still no result. Does anyone know why this is happenning and how I can fix it?

A:Laptop doesn't wake after sleep mode after Windows 10 update

I was having the Exact Same Issue. The reason I decided to go back to windows 8 was because since upgrading to Windows 10, when my computer goes into sleep mode, I cannot wake it up. I have to press and hold the power button to shut it done and restart. Even if I close my laptop, and reopen the lid, it wont start back up and I have to press and hold the power button and shut it down and restart.  After trying to restore my HP Envy Laptop from Windows 10 to Windows 8, it got stuck in a Repair PC Loop and I could not even access the desktop, I tried the restore option to an earlier date and that failed and all the repair options also failed. The last option I had was to do a full PC Refresh, and that one worked. It took about an hour but no data was lost, and only a few of my downloaded apps were removed. An html url was left on the desktop that showed a list of all the apps that were removed. So all I did was download those back and now im back up and running Windows 8.

Hello all,

If I move my mouse or type any key during a black screen, it turns back to desktop.

Seems like ever since the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers update (I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think it's the case), my screen stays black upon being woken up from sleep or hibernation. I know it's on, and it's not a matter of the computer being slow, because it's not, and even if it were, leaving it on for many minutes and it remains blank, and the power button and keyboard and everything light up and it starts heating up, so I know it's doing something. Hitting FN-F2 for the backlight does nothing, so I don't think that's the issue. The only way to resolve it is to hold down the power button and reboot, which **bleep**ing pisses me off because sometimes I have important work up and am forced to lose it. Anyone else seeing this issue? Could it be related to the new graphics drivers, or is this something worse and hardware related? My screen seems A-OK when it comes to everything else. Thank you!

Hello,
I thought I already had my portion of "luck" with Win 8.1 but it's not over yet.
My other two threads:
Windows 8.1 RTM installation fails on Dell XPS 1340 (Solved)
http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-h...ps-1340-a.html

Second one still not solved, I can't seem to find correct drivers or way to get both BT + Wifi working.

And now I found another problem. When I close lid of my laptop and open it again the screen is black. Nothing helps to get it out of this. I have power options set to "Do nothing" for both On battery and Plugged in.

So I press power button which sends the laptop to Sleep. Then I press it again to wake it up. And this is when I see the BSOD and laptop restarts.

In minidump I see athwnx.sys and ntoskrnl.exe reported.
athwnx.sys is driver for Dell Wireless 1515 minicard (Wifi and BT). Current driver is from Microsoft, version 3.0.1.155, dated 03/05/2013.

Attached is required info created by SF Diagnostic Tool.

I hope somebody will be able to help me resolve this.

A:BSOD after wake up from Sleep (+ black screen on lid open)

Where did you get your 8.1 from? If not from a legitimate Microsoft source, you may have a "remarked" version that really isn't legitimate. If that's the case, we may not even be able to fix it.

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

1 Windows Update installed. Most 8.1 systems have 26. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

D: drive only has less than 1% free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

As you have noticed, the memory dumps blame athwnx.sys. This appears to be the most recent version, so a couple of possibilities exist:
- the current version could be corrupted (to test this - remove the wireless and test while on a wired connection) If so, download a fresh copy, uninstall the current version and then install the fresh version.
- the current version may not be to blame (run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: http;//www.carrona.org... Read more

All help appreciated

My new Windows 8 machine frequently, but not always, displays a split screen with vertical black lines after waking up. When I say split screen, I mean it appears that the screen has 'rolled' to the right, with the right third of the screen or so disappearing and rolling around to the left. I hope that makes sense.

Anyway, between the two issues, it renders the machine unusable. I can just about find the restart button, but it means I'm forced into it against my will.

Graphics driver up to date. (According to windows device driver)

Any ideas?

To be honest I?ve never heard about such issue. I think you are the first one who reports about that.
Maybe you should back-up all your data and reinstall OS using HDD recovery option.
After doing this you will have ?factory settings? again and test it if the same happen again.

For how long do you have this machine?

SAMLIB.dll is a security account manager dynamic linked lib. A repair install from the dvd should fix the problem unless you are infected with malware, or have a modified system

I have a problem with waking up my laptop PC. If I leave it be (no writing, no mouse using), then the screen just turns black with the pointer indicating "process" after about 15 min. Nothing works, when I press the buttons. Then I just have to restart it, which is rather troublesome.

I tried managing the Power Options. Right now they are:
Turn off monitor >Never
Turn off hard disks> Never
System standby >Never
System hibernates> Never

Could it be some kind of virus program or should I check the msConfig.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.
/Zquirrel.

Hi guys. I have had a problem with my XP laptop by Compaq (model nx9005).

When the screen goes to sleep when the laptop has been idle for a while, the screen sometimes does not wake up when I tap the keyboard or move the mouse. I am forced to put the system into standby and then take it back out of standby for the screen to wake up. Then everything functions correctly.

I have tried setting the monitor to NEVER switch off, didn't work. I have tried to leave the lid of my computer open, still, didn't work. This problem occurs whether the lid is open or closed when the screen goes to sleep.

If my specs help at all, here they are.

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (build 2600)

I've never seen this problem before in my life and it has me mortified.

My Sony VAIO starts. It's plugged in normally. The power lights flash, it checks the CD-RW drive, and then remains on with the main power light on and the fan on, but the screen remains black and nothing else happens. Windows XP doesn't load. No Sony logo, no "Operating system not found," nothing. It's like it's had a lobotomy.

I haven't installed anything new, and the notebook has just been sitting around unplugged for a few days. The last thing I used it for was to burn a CD with Windows Media Player. The only change I can think of is that my USB tablet isn't plugged in.

Any suggestions? Thanks, everybody.

A:Solved: XP VAIO laptop starts, Windows doesn't, screen doesn't seem to.

If it has a battery installed, try removing that. Then with the laptop power plug UNplugged press and hold the power button for a second or two.

Then plug the power adapter back in WITHOUT replacing the battery and see if you can get a normal start.

I have a dell inspiron n5110, it has the following specs: (2 years since purchse)
core i7
6GB b of RAM
nvidia 525 gt graphics card / 1gb dedicated
Windows 7 64 bit
640 GB HDD
The laptop was working fine yesterday and when i went to sleep i properly turned it off without any errors occurring. Today when i turned it on:-
-the power button turns on
-the three support buttons on the top right corner of the laptop flash
-i can see battery and power notification lights but the hard drive light doesn't blink or turn on
-i can hear and in fact glimpse the fan working.
-the screen shows nothing, it isn't a black screen because that would imply that the screen still turns on but the screen remains off.
-I hear no error beeps or any kind of booting sounds
-I should also probably mention that recently the AC adapter of the laptop wasn't working properly and i had part of its main connecting wires replaced while keeping the circuit board or main work board intact, and it worked fine after that but i am guessing the repair may have something to do with this new issue.
I have tried the hard reset or flea power method, hoping it would solve the problem but it hasn't work even after multiple attempts. The laptop is no longer under warranty and if the issue is dire and i suspect it is, i would have to send the computer to a dell support  and repair center and i have  heard maintenance and repair costs may be as much as the laptop's price depend... Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

It ba... Read more

Hi,

I'm hoping any knowledgeable people here might be able to help me, please.

After a failed attempt to install Comodo Firewall (followed by me uninstalling it), my computer will no longer boot. It starts to load windows, and gets to the point of a black screen with a white cursor (just before the desktop is loaded), then tells me:

* lsass.exe failed to initialize properly

* services.exe failed to initialize properly

After each of these, I click OK. Then I'm left with a black screen.

I've tried Safe Mode, but I get the same two errors. I believe that System Restore was disabled (I can't believe I left it off after the last virus cleaning episode!).

Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.

with puppylinux live cd i can see everything and access the files, so i don-t think it-s hardware related problem.

i don-t now what to do more, could it be a strong virus in mbr? but with fixmbr it should have been fixed, shouldn-t it?

Boot the Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD, accept any offered Repair. If none offered or it fails to start afterwards, then boot back in to Recovery Options to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots.
Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times
System Repair Disc - Create

Make sure Win7 partiiton or it's 100mb System Reserved boot partition (preferred) is still marked Active, then run the Repairs again. Partition - Mark as Active

Hi All,

I have a Windows 7 Pro x64 which has been running for a many months without any issues.

Three days ago I restarted the machine and Windows 7 didn't start anymore. I have spent a lot of time investigating it and could not find anything wrong with the boot loader or the file system where the OS is.

So the boot loader works, I have also replaced it just in case but nothing changed. I can go into the boot loader menu and chose the Windows 7 entry but then the black screen which says "Starting Windows" comes and nothing else happens.

Note that the computer doesn't hang, it simply gets stuck at some point and doesn't do anything else. The HDD LED stays on from this point forward and that is it, if I press ctrl+alt+del it restarts and if it were completely frozen it wouldn't.

So here is what I don't believe is causing the problem:

This Windows 7 runs on a pair of drives in RADI1 so it cannot be a problem with the drives. I have run checks just to be sure and couldn't find anything, no file system issues or bad blocks.

The raid controller is not reporting any issues with the drives.

I have booted with the windows install cd and tried to repair it many times but the auto repair says it could not repair it, other times it tells me that no issue was found.

The boot manager is working fine, I have replaced it just in case using bootrec /fixmbr and /fixboot and also bootsect /nt60 all.

I have checked for corrupt files with sfc and no files were corrupt, at leas... Read more

I have no idea what is wrong with this machine. Every time it reboots, the welcome screen shows up then a blank black screen for, like, 5 minutes and then a screen that gives the option of starting in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, etc and gives a countdown before it starts in normal mode whereupon it just goes to a black screen.

We tried going into Safe Mode and going back to a restore point, but it didn't help (and, curiously, there was one restore date in April 2002 which said there were no restore points on it, even though the date was highlighted, and when we hit the button for the next month, it jumped to August 2005! The computer was used in between those times as well, so I don't get that at all). We went back to the earliest restore point available.

We also inserted the Windows XP disk and went through the whole "repair files" thing, but this morning it's the same thing.

It's a Gateway. I don't know if that helps.

What is wrong with this computer? What do we need to do to fix it?

A:Black screen on startup, Safe Mode doesn't help?

Really hard to say -- is it keeping the time and date correctly?

Once in normal mode -- is the screen resolution normal?

You may need to update the display drivers.

It's an old computer and it's possible the CMOS battery has died and the CMOS settings are corrupt.

I would change the batttery on the motherboard for starters.

You may also need to to ram and hard drive diagnostics.

Sometimes the event viewer can provide some clues on recent errors.

Run eventvwr.msc and look at the system log in particular.

Recently there has been an issue with my Z930 and I'm not sure if it's a damaged screen or if it's something to do with the software. I'm also using Windows 8 as the operating system.

Earlier today the device was running as normal, but it later began flickering with a mess of pixels everywhere like a glitch, with black lines rising from the bottom of the screen.

A few seconds after that cleared up, the entire screen turned black.
It is still lit up, but there's only a blank, black screen - I can't even see the cursor.

Every now and then the screen flickers like it's struggling to keep working. I hooked it up to another screen and its typical display showed on the other device, so I'm taking a guess that it's a damaged screen.

Before I start preparing to get a new screen or even a new device, is it possible that it might be something else other than a broken screen?

Because it's odd seeing that I take great care about the screen because it is fragile to begin with, I haven't knocked it or had any fluids on the screen, so having it suddenly break like that is pretty odd.

A:Satellite Z930 doesn't work - black screen

Hi

The described symptoms like flickering with a mess of pixels sounds like a graphic card problem.
Also the fact that the same symptoms are visible on the 2nd external screen, would confirm my assumption that the GPU would be affected.

In case the internal screen would be faulty, the external screen should work properly but this isn?t the case.

From my point of few the motherboard together with the GPU has to be replaced in order to fox the issue but of course the whole notebook should be tested by an service engineer before starting to replace any parts.

Hello everyone. First of all, I would like to start off by saying I love your forum here. I have used it many, many, many times in order to resolve a problem I encountered here in our computer repair shop, so much props goes to you guys.

We have a customer's computer running Windows XP Professional that will not boot. After the Compaq splash screen, it simply hangs at an all black screen with a white blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of the screen. I have already searched your forums as well as poured over Google searches and tried various things. The things I have already tried to no avail are:

1. Boot into Recovery Console from Windows XP Pro CD and fixboot/fixmbr
2. Replace RAM with new RAM.
3. Replace NTLDR file from a working Windows XP Pro machine
4. chkdsk /r
5. Used a guide here on your forums for using xPUD with mbr.bin on a USB. Not sure what was supposed to of happened, because nothing did after I followed all the steps. Completely unchanged.
6. I have also tried booting into Safe Mode, which also does nothing.

Finally, out of my own frusteration, I booted the computer to Hirem's Boot CD and used it's "Fix NTLDR Is Missing" tool using the first option out of 10 possible fixes and wham! Boots Windows first try. However, upon restart of the customer's computer I am again greeted with the black screen and a blinking cursor. I must use Hirem's Boot CD to boot Windows each time.

Obviously one would assume it's an NTLDR issue, but... Read more

Hi Guys, I need some help here. My PC is screwed. After reading a bunch of loading screen problems I saw that all of them were problems that occurred after the XP loading screen happens. But, after around yesterday night I got up and used the computer, and when I was done I put the computer into standby mode and went back to bed. A few hours later I woke up, and still a bit sleepy I got up, turned my computer back on and held the Power Button until it shut down, all of which I did not turn on my monitor or move anything; I was sleepy. Then, today when I started my computer, the computer booted up as usual, and I saw my ASUS loading screen, and the the flashing _'s that happens when my computer loads when I start it up. But then, it just goes blank. I tried restarting the computer and try again, with the power button turn off, which just turns off when I press it, unlike when my computer is acting normally, which takes a few seconds. Can anyone help me? I just hope my hard drive isn't fried or anything. Thanks!

A:Monitor turns black and doesn't load before XP loading screen

Could you explain this again please"?
"turned my computer back on and held the Power Button until it shut down, all of which I did not turn on my monitor or move anything"

Do you mean you pressed the power once then held it for 4 seconds? Do you normally turn your system OFF this way instead of using Start /Shut Down?

Sounds like this is a desktop, recommended practice is to turn the monitor ON then the system, after use, turn the system OFF then the monitor.

Standby, Suspend to RAM and Hibernation where windows is concerned, do not always work and are highly hardware and setup dependant.

I have an Acer desktop with Vista 32bit Home Premium edition with Service Pack 1 loaded on it. My computer was working fine yesterday afternoon (at least it appeared to be), but when I tried to boot my computer up last night, I could not get my desktop to load. Windows seems to boot up, as I can get to the screen with the user names to login. No matter which user I select, however, the screen just goes black with only the cursor showing. I have tried booting from the last good boot point from the F8 menu, but the same problem persists. I have tried booting in safe mode, but the screen shows up all black once again, except for the four 'Safe Mode' texts in the four corners and the text Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 6001: Service Pack 1) at the center top of the screen.

Hello and thanks for reading,

I have a 2 year old HP pavilion dv6 series laptop running windows 7. Yesterday I turned it on and it started normally but when I tried to browse on Firefox it gave me the blue screen (for the first time ever) and it shut down. Fearing I had a virus I ran it in safe mode and started a scan and began transporting my pictures via Dropbox just in case it died on me. Sure enough a weird error message (couldnt figure out what program made the message pop up) popped up saying I had a bunch of urgent viruses.. I didn't click on it at all and before I couldn't think of what to do the blue screen popped up and it shut down. When I tried to restart it the HP splash sign popped up and the screen flickered black and a blinking cursor started in the upper left corner. So this is where I stand now... Black screen with blinking cursor. Set default setting in BIOS (didn't work) and F8 (safe mode) or F11 (system restore) does nothing... The black screen just stays there. Any ideas? Is it a gonner? I'm hoping to get back on and get my pictures if possible. Help please!

I recently did a factory restore on my laptop since it was giving me really bad problems before(BSOD on boot, unable to start in safe mode, etc). I assumed that it was caused by a bad video driver installation. Once I did my factory restore, this problem was solved, but it seems like a new one arose.

In the first few days the laptop was working fine, but I recently realised that if I unplug my AC Adapter, my laptop would work for awhile but will eventually die. The screen would just go black, then I would see weird colors and then it would go black again and I would be forced to hold the power button and restart. The funny thing is, this never happens when I have it plugged in.

I then realised that it happened when I plugged it out and moved it around, so I assumed it had something to do with the wiring inside my laptop. But it seems that isn't the case since even if I move it around while it's plugged in, it doesn't happen. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my power supply at this point, but I'm not really sure.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it!

EDIT: It just happened to me as I tried to access my task manager. I did CTLR+ALT+DEL and my screen went black, and my laptop simply restarted itself.

A:Laptop screen failure; random colors followed by black screen

EDIT: It seems it has gotten way worse. It happened while it was plugged in, and not only that, but when I tried to turn on my laptop again, the screen remained black and I heard these beeping noises. (6 beeps in succession, over and over) Sometimes I turned it on and it didn't even beep. I managed to actually get my laptop to boot, but I'm afraid it will happen again.

Hello,
I have a Sony Vaio T-series laptop (model SVT13126CXS) running windows 7. As of yesterday the screen is black...it doesn't display anything.
Laptop powers on (lights are on, fan makes noise, etc.).
I was able to plug an HDMI cable from my laptop to my TV and I am able to use the laptop using my TV screen (laptop screen is still black, but displays on TV works).
And the odd twist... this is a touch screen laptop, so I am able to touch my laptop screen and it makes clicks and moves cursor on my TV. (for some reason, the track pad doesn't work while its on TV display though).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you can give me steps into diagnosing the problem, that'd be great!
I live in a small college town and there is only one computer repair shop and since it's a monopoly he rips people off. Charges $95 for a diagnostic (if you get it fixed, it goes towards the repair; if not, it's $95). Charged my friend $120 for macbook charger and it wasn't even an genuine Apple product!

I have a gateway laptop (SOLO 5350) and the screen was horribly ripped off(during car accident). Well when I connect my desktop 17" monitor to the port on the back of the laptop and when the windows xp home edition boot screen is finished I get a black screen although the cpu is still workig properly and the monitor is still on. I reboot and press f8 and try to go into safe mode but it just hangs on the screen with all the driver names on it. Can someone guide me in a good direction before I take it to a repair shop?

A:Laptop screen damaged.....black screen at boot

Normally there's a Altfunction+key that switches the desktop from the LCD to a external monitor.. Look around on the top row of keys for a monitor symbol, then use the alternate function key with that key to switch to the monitor.

First post, but I have tried to uninstall video drivers, system restore, random registry fixes, and so forth. I also did a virus scan, showing 17 Trojans (I know, very bad). I am guessing that is how this happened, not sure though. Uninstalling the video drivers helps, until I need to restart it due to new software. Then I can sometimes get to the log in screen, but even after that, It just goes black after a few seconds. I have searched and searched all over, and have not found a fix. Any help?

Hi Hackrtanman,

firstly welcome to the forums

Can you post detailed specs of your system.

And can you try to boot into safemode and disable the video card drivers on the system from Device Manager and then restart the system and check.

I'm having a weird problem. My laptop will show a black screen when booting. It seems no matter how long I wait, nothing happens. When I attach an external LCD to the laptop, it shows the Windows load or Windows resume graphics on the external monitor, but not on my laptop screen. As soon as the Desktop Screen with the Windows Login appears, it then appears on my laptop as well.

I also can't seem to get to safe mode. I push f8 and it never comes up I haven't installed any new software or hardware to cause this.
Any thoughts?

Well heres the story..

The d/c jack on my laptop broke, i bought a new one off ebay and now it will charge ect.

The night before i plugged the new d/c jack in, i took the screen out of my laptop and tried it in a different laptop (because the other ones screen was broke and i was testing nothing else broke)

But now when i have put my laptop back together, the laptop powers on and loads windows as normally (presumably - hdd light starts flashing ect) but nothing is on the screen.

What could be the problem?

One possibility is that the video ribbon cable that goes thru the hinge area will sometimes have cracked conductor trace lines due to opening/closing the lid too much. Another possibility is that the video ribbon connectors simply need to be re-seated a half dozen or so times at the screen and mainboard to clean the connections. Either way, the screen bezel and keyboard will have to be removed to access this ribbon cable.  The laptop model and number should affixed to a label on the bottom of the machine. Video ribbons are pretty cheap but you need to know what you have. Jack E/NJ

I have my monitor set to go to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. Once it goes to sleep, it doesn't wake back up unless I either restart the computer or power cycle the display. Being that the BIOS wakes it up with no problem, I assume my computer just isn't sending the wake signal. By the way, the monitor is a Hanns-G HH281.

I have PCI-e link state power management turned off and input auto-search on the monitor turned off. No matter what I try I can't seem to get it to wake up normally. Once it goes to sleep, I have about 10 seconds to move the mouse or press a key to get it turn on, but once the light turns orange and it displays no signal, I have to power cycle it.

Can anyone offer some insight into this issue? Thanks!

I've never changed the settings, but my new Dell with windows 8 doesn't like to wake from sleep mode. Sometimes it wakes OK, sometimes I have to do a power off shutdown then restart. Has anyone had this problem? If so, how did you fix it? Thanks.

A:My Dell doesn't like to wake

A common problem for resume/waken failures are Windows drivers. Updating to the latest drivers possible can fix this problem, but as Windows 8 is rather new it may be a while till you get updated drivers for all your devices. Your best bet is to check the manufacturers web sites.

Yes, I know that there are similar threads on this problem but none has the solution for mine.

Basically, I cannot use Remote Desktop to connect to my PC which runs Windows 7 x64 Ultimate when the PC is in sleep mode. The problem didn't exist when I used Win 7 x32 before.

Here's some information that could be helpful for you in detecting the problem.

- My PC is connected to the internet through a wireless router. The IP address is fixed (through TCP/IPv4 property). Note that I can use RD when this PC is on.

- The wireless adapter is Dell Wireless 1505 WLAN mini-card. In the device manager/Power Management, I have all 3 options ("Allow the Computer to turn off this device", "Allow this device to turn the computer", and "Only allow a magic packet") checked. I have tried all combination of these options but none works.

A:Wake On Lan doesn't work

Welcome!

Make sure these settings are also enabled.

If you do not have those settings, try looking for a network adapter driver update.

Hello,         I have been using this new machine for last 2 months and am experiencing this issue from time to time. When I don't work on the laptop, I just close the lid. After some time, I see that the red led light on the lid goes blinking on slow pace - that tells me the machine has gone into sleep mode. Now, when I come back to the machine later, usually I see either the red led is still blinking or completely gone off. I open the lid, the machine wakes up and I can start working on.       However, at times, when I come back, I see that the red led on the lid is constantly on. In those occasions, when I open the lid, the machine doesn't "wake up". I see that the greed led on the power button is constantly on - so that kind of indicates that the machine IS probably awake. But, the screen is black/empty as if its still sleeping. In these situations, I normally end up with force restarting the machine - making me to reopen all the  applications once again, if not loosing some work/data.        Is there anywya I can tweak any setting or follow any best practice - that can prevent this issue from re-ocurring?         Thank you very much in advance for your suggestions.

Win 7, 64bit, desktop computer doesn't always wake from sleep mode.

I have to switch off the computer and then power up again. Screen states "resuming windows".

Windows button>shut down shows only a sleep option (no hibernation option shown)

Power option is set to "Balanced", display off 25min, put to sleep 40 min

Allow hybrid sleep is "ON"

Hibernate after is set to "never"

A:Desktop doesn't always wake up.

You do not see hibernate as a shut down option because hybrid sleep is enabled.
If you disable hybrid you will have hibernate as a shut down option.
If you disable hybrid I expect you will also get an error message when you restart the PC after a wake up from sleep failed.

Hybrid sleep uses both Sleep and Hibernation when the PC goes to sleep.
It saves the Windows session to RAM (for sleep) and hiberfil.sys file (for hibernation).
If there is an error waking up from sleep, the PC resumes from hibernation.
That is why you see the "resuming windows" when the wake from sleep fails.

I'm not sure why the wake up fails for you sometimes.
One guess is it could be an issue with maintaining the necessary low voltage required for the RAM while sleeping.
If the PSU or MB don't maintain the required voltage to RAM for sleep, seems like that could cause this issue.
Perhaps sometimes the Windows session is not written correctly to RAM when going to sleep.

How do you wake up the PC (Power button, Keyboard, Mouse, etc.)?
Do you get a single beep when the PC wakes up correctly?

I have a Compaq M2000 laptop using Windows XP Home, updated with all the updates, about 4 years old. I have a newer one, but I use this one quite a bit so I don't have to lug the bigger one around the house. I bought new memory, put it in and got a black screen. I took it out, put the old memory in and it worked for a few days. I was using it last night and got a black screen. I could faintly see the page I was on, I shut it off and could power up and only saw the black screen.

I hooked it up to a monitor, it starts to work, I get the Windows XP logo, then the monitor goes black.

Any ideas what to do? I would think the old memory is in okay, because it worked for a few days.

Thanks!

A:Laptop with black screen

I just hit Function and F4 and was able to get the monitor to work. It works with the monitor plugged in. When I went to graphics properties, it shows the monitor as the primary, I changed it to the laptop and the laptop is still black. Evidently I have a problem with whatever controls the laptop screen. Not sure I want to invest much money in this, might just look for an everyday laptop to leave upstairs so I don't have to carry my work laptop up and down the steps.

My vista laptop has been acting unusual for the past week.
Normally after it has goes to sleep, I touch any key and it wakes up.
But now when I touch a key, it wakes up, but the screen stays black. :-(

I can shine a flashlight and see that the icons are vaguely present.
There is a function key to switch the display from external to internal
or both. When I select that key, I will get a regular display for about 3 seconds.
Then I select that key again and same response.
After about 5 or so of these, the screen is normal (until next sleep).
I tried restoring to Jan 13, before the updates and it still has
the problem. I also ran chkdsk and no help.

And when I connect an external monitor, the external monitor only shows my
wallpaper, it has no icons.

Any ideas what this is?

There are other posts about black laptop screens, but this is my situation.

My son mistakenly plugged in a base speaker unit into the VGA port on the laptop. Since that time, my screen is black. I cannot even attach an external monitor and have it work properly.

I have tried, per previous posts, to take all devices off and hold power button with no battery for 30-60 seconds. When I go back to restart the computer, the screen will try to light up, but for an instant it is like a bulb goes on/off real fast. This happens after the power button has been held down.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have only had this laptop for 4 months now and it was fine until yesterday when I uninstalled Mcafee and Microsoft Office from my machine using add and remove programs. After the machine restarted it was going very very slow so I decided to copy all my documents to my external hard drive, during this process the machine froze and niether alt f4 or ctrl, alt, del would work. I held down the power button to restart the machine and this time tried the launch start up repair option. The start-up repair comes up "Windows Loading" with a percentage bar but then promptly gives me a blank black screen.

I have pressed the power button countless times to restart the machine, I can manage to get to the bios if that helps anything, I have also pressed f8 on the machine and tried starting it in safe mode, as well as the last know good configuration but that crashes like the other options did.

Hi everyone!

I've run into problems with my HP Compaq 6715b laptop. I've been getting black screens at random times - never during startup / shutdown but just during normal use.
I've tried to see if it's a display problem by hooking up an external monitor etc. but there was no signal. Another symptom which makes me think that the monitor is not at fault is because the music I'm playing at the time of a black screen stops as well.
All I can do is switch it off then back on again - starts up ok though on the bright side!
If anyone knows what I can do to fix this just let me know!

Thanks!

I too have the same problem with my Dell Vostro 3400. It happened to me thrice.

The laptop screen just goes blank and nothing seems to work. The only option left is to Force ShutDown using the power button and start up again. And it does start up properly though at start up it gives the option of SafeMode booting.

I called the Dell guy and he said he would be replacing the Fan and heat sink. Will this really solve the problem???

Hello. I purchased a Compaq F572 Notebook with Vista about 3 weeks ago. All of a sudden now, when I turn on the laptop, the welcome screen appears and as soon as the taskbar starts to display, it goes to a black screen. The only way I can get my laptop desktop to show up is to connect a second monitor, with both monitors displaying the desktop. When I disconnect the second monitor and turn the laptop back on, the same thing happens - welcome screen and then black screen. My display settings are set for "mirrored" image. Please help!! Thank you!!!

I have an old Toshiba satellite 1800 laptop running XP home - the problem is the screen went black.
I thought that it was the backlights and was ready to write it off (it works OK if you plug a monitor in) but the screen just came back. It went off again after a while but I found that if I hit the little button that causes it to beep if you close the screen up before it has shut down the screen comes back on. Unfortunately it doesn't stay on long, but every time you hit the button it will come back.
Is there a fix for this?
