Q: Envy 15-j100 receives power from adapter but power button do...

My laptop will no longer turn on. When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

Hello,I was directed by here after submitting a warranty query by a member of CS. I did some searching online, and I (worryingly) found a heck of a lot of instances of cases splitting apart on the hinge by the power button. I got told because it is out of warranty there is nothing which can be done (besides paying for a solution of course). Does anyone have any experience of dealing with this? Despite being a laptop I think it left my house once since I've owned it.It is less than 2 years old, it is pretty rubbish since the laptop was nearly £900, and the side of the case is literally splitting/opening up.

Hello Forum, I've just managed to break the head of my HP Envy 14 Spectre (14-3011tu) power adapter cable.  The power adapter is one of those HP travel adapters (65W - 574487-001) with interchangable heads.  I called HP Australia and various HP suppliers to see if I can get a replacement interchangable heads or even a whole replacement adapter however no one has them in stock (well they have the base power pack but not the correct head and no one know when they'll get extra stock).   Do anyone know if there is a similar HP laptop that uses the same long 4.7mm adapter head as the HP Envy 14 Spectre (14-3011tu) ? I'd like to buy one so that I can hack together a new interchangable head cable whilst I wait for new OEM stock to come in.   PS. I've already ordered a few of the aftermarket adapters off eBay that clam to fit the Envy 14 Spectre however they are a few micronos too thick to fit in the socket.  Image below just in case you're having the same headaches as me.  http://support.tmg100.com/HPEnvyPlusAM1.jpg Cheers!

Hello,
After putting my computer into sleep mode last night, I was unable to get it to boot into windows this morning. When i pressed the power buttong, everything turn on and working (all fans are functional, gpu power led is on, all hard drives & cd drives are functional. But the problem is, the screen to my monitor is blank. I also noticed that my usb aren't working (mouse connection light isn't on). I tried a soft power off by holding down the power button but no luck. The system does not turn off no matter how long I hold it. The only way to turn it off is by pulling the power supply cord or turning the power supply switch off.

Hello,

Is it possible that you can test with another compatible PSU? I would strongly suggest doing so.

Also try the following steps:
?Make sure that the (internal) speaker is connected to the motherboard
?Remove all memory and attempt to boot the PC
?You should get the no memory beep errors

If the Power Supply is in working order and no beeps are present then it can be indicative of a faulty motherboard.

For troubleshooting purposes it may be a good idea to remove the components from the case and bench test to rule out a short.

Hello,

Hoping someone here can offer some advice? I own a Dell studio xps 435t-9000 that is a couple years old. I recently replaced my harddrive and since then (don't know if it's a coincidence or not) I'm having another problem. After I installed it, the first time my computer went into sleep mode/hibernation I couldn't wake it up. Power light was flashing white. Eventually I shut it down manually and then it wouldn't boot. Had a solid amber light, no power except the power supply. Fans not working. I unplugged everything and made sure it was all good. Wouldn't start. Left it overnight and plugged it in the next morning. Started up. Worked great for about 7 hours and then just randomly shut down, no errors or anything. Same deal. Wouldn't start, amber solid power light. Let it sit for awhile, reseated everything and wouldn't start.Gave up for awhile, tried a few hours later and it started. I read a few boards pointing to the power supply being bad or not powerful enough. However, I replaced the power supply about 6 months ago with a Corsair 600 which is plenty power. Could still be an issue perhaps but seems odd it would die in that little time. I also replaced my graphics card if that matters. Finally the last time I checked all the plugs I also took out the board batter for a few minutes to try and "reset" things. Not sure if that matters, either.

So, I'm at a loss where to go from here. I could replace the power su... Read more

Why does shutting down the computer, removing the AC Adapter, removing the battery (if it is a laptop), and holding down the power button for 30 seconds fix problems in one's computer. I was recently corrected in a post of mine that this does not actually do anything unless one removes the 3 volt battery from the motherboard, but I know this is not true from experience. Here is the correction I am referring to from a more experienced member:

The motherboard has a 3 volt battery installed in it. This battery provides just enough power to retain all of the BIOS settings regardless of the state of the main power or the power supply. Following the steps above will not reset the BIOS or the CMOS chip.

You can reset the BIOS defaults by selecting that option from within the BIOS settings. Usually on the Exit menu.

To reset the CMOS (Clear the CMOS chip) there will be either a jumper on the motherboard to perform this function with, or newer boards have an actual reset button.

The above procedure will work to restore the BIOS defaults if you add the step:
2b - remove the 3v battery.
But it will not clear the CMOS.

The reason I know that doing the hardware reset I described initially works:

My g570 laptop is 4 years old, so probably time for a new one...BUT I'd like to get some more life out of this if I could.  Currently I'm running only on battery power. The power button (upper left right above the F1 key) is solid white however when I plug it in...it'll start charging for about 10 seconds and then it stops charging and the power button starts flashing white.  I've tried the shutting down, taking out the battery and pressing the power button and also holding the button to discharge. Still the same outcome. I've also tried turning it on with the battery removed and just the AC power source and it turns out and makes it past the Lenovo splash screen but loses power before getting to the windows loading screen.  Any other suggestions? Or should I just assume the charging circuit on the motherboard has failed and I should rescue my data while I can?

I have had my Hp laptop for 3 years now. It has been working perfectly, up until 2 weeks ago. It would not turn on when I clicked the power button. After clicking the power button, 15 minutes later I noticed it just came to life. Sometimes it doesn't turn on at all for days, but sometimes I click the power button and it boots within 15-30 minutes. When i click the power button, nothing happens at all for that duration. No fans, no lights nothing. The only light on is the power cord button that is always on when i plug it in. I did replace the power cord, and tried cleaning out the insides, it did nothing. Should i just replace the motherboard?

I recently upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 10. When I power down the system from the menu, my computer does not completely turn off. The procedure I use is described below:

Click Windows_Start_button > Power > Shutdown

The system closes applications and appears to initiate a shutdown procedure. Everything appears to be shut off, but my mouse is still lit up. I do notice that the fan stops and everything else appears to be completely shut down. When I was running Windows 7 before my upgrade, my system completely powered down.

I have a dual boot system with Linux, and when I power down from Linux, the shutdown is complete, so I don't think I accidentally did anything to the hardware or BIOS.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm pretty sure there is some tweak in Windows 10 that would fix this, but I haven't found it yet. Thanks for any suggestions you might be able to offer.

A:Power down button does not completely turn computer power off

I found the solution on another thread. If you have this problem try the following:
1. Log in as an administrator.
2. Right click the Menu button.
3. Left click -> Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable
4. Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended)
5. Make sure Hibernate is unchecked.
6. Left click Save changes.
The next time you shut down the computer, it will be completely powered off. At least this worked on my machine.

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Does anyone know of such a reference?

I first logged out of my computer and came back and I noticed an orange light on the power button. I shut it of and turn it back on about two times with the same results of an orange light. I then shut of the the extension that houses 10 plugs. When I turned on the extension I turned on the computer the power button didn't give off a blue light or orange light. The VGA cable, mouse, keyboard, Ethernet cable are all plugged in. I later removed all the connects to the computer gave it a minute and plugged it all back in. There is a solid green light on the back under the power cable. The fans turn on there is noise coming from inside the computer a soft humming and light fan from the back of the computer. But the power button will not turn on. The monitor light is orange and says "No Input signal Input 2,Go to Power Save." When I switch to input 1 it reads "Cable Disconnected Go to Power Save." What internal issue could this be?

Hi everybody,

I tried to search on google about this, but it's not really help and it never happen to me before so I post here.

My PC was running normally for a long time, just couple weeks ago I sent my faulty video card (xfx nvidia 8800 ultra) to get warranty service and they sent me back another. The new one works fine, but a week later I tried to turn on my computer and there's no power at all. No lights on, no fan running, just no sign of power. So I check inside if there's any wire from the PSU is unplugged, but everything looks good, nothing seems wrong. I'm sure the power from the wall is good and the power switch on the back is on. So I tried to check the wired again, push the power cable to the mother harder and press the button, it worked. But that doesnt solve the problem, if I put something heavy near the PC or the desk is vibrating a little bit, the power turns off. I press the power button again it would not turn on until I open the case and press the power cable to the motherboard harder, it's on. I then close the side panel, it's off, no power.
This is really annoyed me, I dont know what else to do. What caused this problem? The power supply or the power button? Can somebody help me?

My system specs:
ECS G31T-M mobo, Intel E8400 Duo, 2x2GB RAM
2x2 SATA HD, nVidia 8800 ultra video card

Hey folks! Thanks for checking out my post, I've looked online, but couldn't find a solution, so I thought I'd make my own post. Some details: This laptop is an HP DV6-3064 ca. It was purchased refurbished about a year ago, and has had almost no problems to this point. I was at a friend's house using my laptop, and everything was working fine. Shut down, packed it up, took it home, pulled it out, pushed the power button, and nothing. I didn't leave it in the sun, or bump it on anything. Just brought it home and it wouldn't turn on, with no warning signs or anything. Now I looked into power issues and I can guarantee my battery as well as the AC adapter are perfectly fine. I also tried the hard reset but still get nothing. The light by the DC jack does not turn on when I plug it in. Now, I'm relatively tech-savvy, and since my laptop was no longer under warrantee I figured I'd check it out for myself. (Don't really have the resources to take it to a repair shop). The DC jack looked like it might have had some wear on it, so I ordered a new one from a reputable seller on eBay, replaced the old one, and nothing changed. I'm completely at a loss here. Weird thing is, when I have the laptop opened, and plugged in, I can feel the motherboard heat up a bit. Not sure if it's supposed to do that, but I know there is power going to it, even though the DC jack light still does not light up. If anybody has any insight, PLEASE let me know, and if you need any more info... Read more

A:HP DV6-3000 Getting NO power. No response from power button ...

Bannor,  The LED on the DC jack usually is an indicator of whether the AC adapter is working properly.  That light is on a different circuit and does not require a good system board.  If the light does not come on usually the adapter is bad. If you've already tested or replaced the adapter then the dc jack is the next step however when HP replaces this part in the repair depot they usually replace the entire board (with jack soldered on) at once.  You might consider replacing the entire board. Wes

Hi,
In reference to the following posting, http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19676126:
I am not the individual who initiated this query but I did have the same issue with my Dell Inspiron 5547, where it wouldn't turn on after a power button shut down.
I followed Hema's instructions by removing the battery and charger and then holding down the power button for a few seconds, and then putting back the parts. It seemed to have done the trick... At least for now. Is this just a temporary fix?
While doing a Google search for a solution I seem to have encountered a number of people who experienced the same issue. Can you also explain why this happens with this particular Dell laptop? Is it a model flaw?
Thank you

After installing windows XP Pro SP3 I found that there is a missing button in Power option properties. The missing button is (When I press the sleep button on my computer), I can find only (When I press the power button on my computer).
My system configuration is as follow
Mother board Gigabyte EP45-UD3R Rev 1.1
My graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 5670

It worth saying that I can shutdown, hibernate or put my PC into sleep mode, so the functions are working but only the button is missing.
I will appreciated very much if some can advise me how to restore the missing button. Is there some option in BIOS that will enable this button?
I contacted Gigabyte customer support, but they directed me to Microsoft, I also contacted ATI but they directed me to Microsoft or BIOS settings. In my BIOS I can't find any option that may affect this button. Any advise will be appreciated

Does the case actually have a separate Sleep Button? I suspect it's not even connected, as the motherboard manual doesn't show a connection for a Sleep Button, only a Power Button.
Windows Power Options won't list it, as it doesn't exist.

If you have a Sleep Button on the keyboard, it might not be listed in Power Options either. That would be up to the Driver software to add that option. You may have to use the software that came with the keyboard to configure the sleep button on the keyboard.

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

`

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

Hello all!

I just recently brought my laptop in to be looked at/repaired. The local technician told me that my laptop system board died due to the Windows 10 updates not playing nice with my old Windows 7 operating system (originally, my laptop had Windows 7 Home, last July I upgraded to Windows 10). I have started to look for a new replacement system board, however I have a few questions. I looked at the service manual for my laptop and can't figure out which replacement system board is adaquate/what they all mean. The serial number of my current system board in my laptop  is 720566-001. I googled this system board number and keep finding results with 720566-501 and 720566-001 in the title for the same system board. Most boards I find on eBay also have the number as 720566-501. My question is this: Will I be able to use a 720566-501 system board to replace my current 720566-001 system board?

Hi, There are dozens (if not hundreds) of HP Envy 15 models/products around, your machine is an HP Envy 15t-j100 which is a CTO machine. You can see 720566-501  is for many different models/products:      http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=720566-501 for your machine its part number is 720566-001. 720566-001 and 720566-501 may be VERY similar but not the same. Regards.

As has happened with many other people, the left hinge on my laptop is breaking loose.  I just dumped out a bunch of loose plastic chips that were rattling around inside.  I have to hold the bottom half of the case closed to keep the hinge from prying the case open when closing the laptop.  The right hinge seems OK so far.  I assume I need to get this fixed...

You should change it in Nvidia control panel - You can configure which programs will use the nvidia or the integrated cards. And also you can change which would be the default one.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5yFO1083ss

I purchased an HP Envy 15t-j100 laptop two years ago that I use for home and work.  I have never had a problem with it until today.  I was stretched out working this afternoon, when I noticed that the space between my monitor and my keyboard were out of alignment.  I closed the laptop, and upon investigation, found that one of the hinges is cracked.  I have not dropped the unit and I am the sole user of this laptop.  I realize that I am out of warranty and I am in no position to cover a costly repair.  I'm worried now that I googled the problem and found that a failed hinge on this unit is common, as I also purchased this laptop for my father less than a year ago.  I have had excellent service from HP in the past and I hope that thi s time will be no different.  Can you please tell me if there is anything that can be done to remedy this cracked hinge before it gets worse and causes other problems?  I'm afraid to move my laptop off the kitchen counter, for fear that the keyboard will come apart, as the cracked hinge seems to be pulling the keyboard open.

Hi, I think you are talking about disk, not disc (normally for CD/DVD or BD). Yes, basically you can use any SSD. There are many around but current hot is Samsung  850 Evo for price / performace            http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/memory-storage/memory-storage/ssd/MZ-75E1T0BW My suggestion: use 1TB (same size with the existing HDD) and simply clone the whole old HDD to SSD then make SSD as drive 1. You may get a small problem: even your machine has 2 bays but no cable inside for bay 2. You have to source one, please try from:            https://www.newmodeus.com/ Regards.

Hi, I am having a problem with booting up my computer. Everytime I turn the computer on, the HDD light comes on but the power light doesn't. When I press the reset button, everything starts working and the computer boots up. I think the problem might be the wires that get plugged into the motherboard. I don't know how to correctly install them and the manual that came with the motherboard doesn't help at all. I have a GA-7IXE4 motherboard with 1000 MHZ AMD and 256 MB RAM. If anybody could assist me with this problem, please do so. If anybody knows how the wires are suppose to be plugged into the motherboard correctly, please let me know because I think that might be the main problem. Thanks.

I sat down to my laptop this morning, only to find that it won't power on. The battery isn't dead, as I left it charging overnight. When I hold down the power button, nothing happens. There is no lights blinking from the power button, CAPS Lock, or anywhere else, nor is there any beeping noises. The only light on is the small LED beside the charging port, which is only on when the power cable is attached. I've tried hard and forced restarts numerous times, some with only the battery put in after, only the power cable put in, or both. I'm currently at a stand still with this laptop. It's about a year and a half old, but I might just bring it to a shop to get replaced if I can't fix it.

Is sleep button the one which will be on the keyboard?

On the CPU there will 2 buttons one will be to start the computer and another one to restart computer?

Can these buttons be used to work like to enter in sleep mode, hibernate mode etc(Making changes in power options in control panel)

I'm having windows 7 computer

A:Power button and sleep button

sleep buttons depend on the manufacturers to where they go. most laptops sleep function is assigned to an F key and used in conjuction with the function or "fn" button. usually on F2 or F3.
These buttons are not programmable via the power options in control panel.

if its a desktop and doesnt have a dedicated sleep button you can reasign the task to either the restart or power button within control panel and or set it to sleep/hybernate after a given time.

HelloMy notebook stopped charging recently and I discovered it was because the fuse in the plug had blown.Bought new fuses to replace the existing one hoping that would allow me to charge my notebook again. My notebook will not turn on even when plugged in and when I press the power button an orange light blinks next to the charger port.I have had problems with my notebook overheating over the past few months and I'm worried an internal part has broken. I can't remove the battery as it is all build in and I'm wary of taking the notebook apart myself as I don't want to cause future damage. The notebook is about 3 years old and I don't have the money to replace expensive parts.Any help would be great!! Thanks in advance

A:HP Envy 4-1203sa no power

What exact fuse did you replace? Are you sure you have a working power supply? The blinking orange light indicates a very small charge left in the battery which you would expect to see if a good power supply had not been attached for a while. The laptop would run on battery until it is exhausted.

Hi, Try the following. Open Settings and select System.  Select Power and sleep, then click on Additional power settings - in the following window, click on 'Choose what the power button does' in the left hand pane. In the subsequent window, first click on 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' ( near the top of the Window ) and then remove the checkmark from the box against 'Turn on fast start-up (recommended)'.  Click the Save Settings button, then close any open windows and restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, download the IMEI driver directly from Intel on the following link, unzip the package and run the installer. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26127/Intel-Management-Engine-Consumer-Driver-for-Intel-NU... When the installation has completed, restart the notebook. When the machine has reloaded, re-enable Fast Start-up and reboot the notebook once again - let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hi, I have recently bought a HP Envy Phoenix 860-007ng (purchased in Germany as I am currently living here). My question is around whether the power supply is large enough. Here are the key specs: - Intel® Core? i7-4790K-16 GB DDR3 (2 x 8 GB) - NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980 Ti (6 GB)- 500 Watt Power Supply-128 GB SATA SSD-2 TB 7200 U/min SATA Having done some research online I understand the 980ti graphics card I have normally needs a larger PSU. My question is why does the computer comes with a 500 watt PSU? And is it worthwhile/possible for me to install a new psu manually? Many thanks for your help! Andy

A:Power Supply on HP Envy Phoenix 860

Greetings, I don't work for HP. You are correct. A 500 W PS should not be able to power a retail version of that graphics card. My guess is Nvidia or a licensee of Nvidia ( EVGA, Gigabyte, Zotac, MSI ) modified the card for HP to work with a 500 W PS. You could replace the PS. I just upgraded to a Corsair RM650X PS in my Envy Phoenix 810-150. It was somewhat of a hassle. Very tight working conditions inside the case. You must measure the existing PS and purchase accordingly.  You would know if you have insufficient power on the 12V rail. It is also possible you are on a tight rope. Adding any additional components could push the power supply to it's limit. Cheers!

I have HP Envy 15 (j165no) doesn't power up as of today. It has been working until yesterday when i turned off. Today it won't turn on no matter what I do. I have tried it with a battery in and plugged in. Tried with without a battery but still plugged in. I also tried it on battery only...all without any effect. No LED's light up (even the one on the power button or the white/orange one next to the power input). I measured power brick's output and it is still putting out power. Even i did hard reset as i read instraction on hp support. But no result. Is there something inside the laptop that I can try to replace, or will I probably have to replace the entire montherboard?

Hi

I have a compaq presario (see below for specs)
It does not want to turn on intermittently. I have to shut it off and play
with the cables (hard drive / power button / cd drive) and then it turns on.

It does not get to the ram check part of the startup. Is there a way to diagnose this problem? I think it might be the startup button / on off button.

Would a pci pc diagnostic card find this problem? I might have fixed this issue
for now since I messed with the cables recently but, I'm thinking it will start up again when my wife tries and uses the PC.
Thanks for any ideas

Sorry, I mistakenly posted this in the Win 7 forum.
Attempting to create a SHUT DOWN or POWER button for Win 8.0. and have tried several solutions. No matter what I type into the NEW SHORTCUT window such as, POWER BUTTON or POWER BUTTON. Exe
I get an error message saying ?The File Cannot Be Found?. What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks for your help, eddie460

A:Win 8.0 Power Button

The Windows 8.1 upgrade has a better way to turn off the system with the right-click lower-left of the screen (or Win-X) menu. Also, the small $5 app Start8 will bring back a Windows 7-like Start menu, complete with a shutdown command. I would recommend these two.

However, if you have the basic Windows 8, you can also create shutdown, restart, etc. commands and add them to the Win-X menu or run them from a shortcut or batch file too.

Code:

Sleep

%windir%\System32\powercfg -hibernate off
%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0
%windir%\System32\powercfg -hibernate on

Hibernate

C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState

Restart

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00

Shut Down

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00

Sometimes when I press the power-on button on the tower, it starts up OK, then cuts out, & goes quiet, the button is still depressed, I press to get it out, then press again.
Sometimes I have to press several times, the screen then tells me "Several attempts have been made.....etc., press F1 to access BIOS......or boot-up {default} will start in 5-4-3-2-1 seconds" I then leave it to do this, I'm not going into BIOS!!
I gather that this is a connection/mechanical fault, can you pin-point it for me please?

Maurice

A:Power On Button

Hello Maurice it has been a while.

There a couple of settings that may be causing your problem ,but if you won't go into your Bios I am not sure how you can deal with ,unless a buddy can stop by.
There is usually a setting controlling the function of the Button.
Sleep/suspend setting ?
What do you want to do?

I have a Dell L433C. The unit seems to overheat when the machine is on for a long period of time, It wont turn back on, so the user had this great idea of constantly hitting the power button until it did. Which for some reason seems to work. After he hits it about 25 times the unit turns back on, I have checked the wires and made sure the connections inside the machine, and outside the machine are ok.

I am not sure that its the power button, but it would seem that even if the unit was on for long periods, it should restart by hitting the power button. Unless its overheating? would excess heat cause the unit not to boot? The workstation is in a small office in a shipping and recieving area, its not next to a heater, and the office isnt kept at hot conditions. I am wondering if bad ram, or a bad cpu, can keep the unit from booting up after its been on, or should I just order a new power button, then power supply, and do a process of elemination?

Thanks

Eli

My neighbor has a Gateway 506GR. She says it's about 3 or 4 years old. She says she got a BSOD and shut down the computor... doesn't recall what the error was. Now, when we push the start button the PSU will act as if it is starting to power up as long as we hold the power button in. Even so, the PSU fan will begin to spin, stop, begin to spin, stop... as long as we hold in the start button. I'm thinking it needs a new PSU, but I don't want to get one and find out its the start button. I've disconnected the HD and CD player and it still doesn't start. It's a 300w PSU.
Any thoughts?

Can anyone tell me why my power button has disappeared from vista start menu?

A:power button

You can change which icon displays in the Start menu by right-clicking on any blank space within the start menu, selecting properties, and the prompt is right there.

Hope this helps,

Usually when I put my computer into sleep mode the power button goes orange but now when I turn my computer into sleep mode the color is blue and its flickering at first I didn't notice because I left the PC but when I came back its flickering on and off I thought an error happened but when I pressed it, it woke up normally. Is their anyway to fix this? Because its annoying, I think it has nothing to do with any software or programs. I didn't touch any hardware parts except for the RAM that I cleaned.
Specs:
HP Pavilion P6640D
Windows 7 Home Basic 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Pentium? Dual Core CPU E6700 @ 3.20 GHz
2048 MB RAM Samsung 2rx8 PC3 10600u
Intel? G41 Express Chipset

A:The Power Button

You touched the RAM? How did you clean it? A flashing blue light may be an indication of a hardware issue.

I would power off the computer completely, unplug it, then press and hold the power button for at least 30 seconds. Next, open it up and remove the RAM, then install it again. Be sure it is installed evenly and securely. Re-assemble the casing, plug it in, and see if the flashing blue light is gone. If it does not, then try running diagnostics. HP provides them on their website for download.

WARNING: Because of the cold weather, be sure to use a grounding strap before touching the RAM. If you don't have one, then at least try to be sure you're electrically discharged by touching a metal object.

First I may know what my problem is, but I want to make sure, before i replace a Power supply. After a normal shutdown, Windows XP, if I restart right away, there is no Problem. But if I wait 15 min, or longer, I must hold in the Power button 5 sec, take my finger off, then press, and computer starts. This is like a Hard shutdown. I repair my Computer, but try to get a print of a Compter, good luck.

Sounds like the BIOS is set up to use power management. Turn all of the PM features off and it should work the way you want.

My power button works fine but the switch thingy that needs to be plugged in all the way, which is under my keyboard (it's the one right above the screw with the label M2.5L4) is loose so any time I need to power up my laptop I have to take my keyboard off and push it in all the way then push the power button. Any tips to fix this or help in any way would be lovely

Dell Inspiron 530 was working okay before I went on holiday. Came back, logged on, all loaded up but computer screen froze. Shut down in normal way. Now it won't come back on. The power light is on (blue) and DELL name came up on the screen, but the screen is now blank.. I can hear the hard drive fans going there are no other sounds from the hard drive, no beeps just the blue light. Left it on for a while to see if it would eventually load up but nothing. I unplugged the power supply, tried a different USB for the keyboard. The wireless mouse is lit up .

A:Power button

Restart your computer.
At the first text on the screen or when the Dell logo appears, tap <F2> until the message Entering Setup appears.
From the BIOS look around and make sure that you can see the CPU, HHD, Memory...
Note if anything is missing.

The other day I decided to turn my envy off for the first time in roughly a week. I usually just leave it on, plugged into the charger, putting it into sleep mode when im not using it. For some reason, ever since then I have not been able to turn it back on. Whenever I press the power button, The power light blinks. The pattern is a single short blink every 3-5 seconds. This continues until I take the battery out. Sometimes, if I leave it be for a day or so, I am able to get the computer to turn on, but It will not boot. I can hear the fan going, see the lights turn on as they are supposed to, however the screen remains black. I am under the impression that this either a hardware issue, or the CPU is just toast. either of which would suck. Normally I would take to a computer shop and have them look at it, but right now I'm serving in Iraq, so im SOL. And yes, I have tried everything under the sun to get it running. I have taken the battery out and left it out for an extended period, tried turning it on with and without the ac adapter plugged in, tried to perform a hard reset, and a combination of all of them.

Last thing to try is remove the cmos (RTC) battery overnight, put it back in, if you get the bios post screen immediately enter the bios and set the date and time (before windows loads)  If you get it working, download the latest bios and install it. Then the latest grahics driver. Service manual for the 15t-1200

I have a boot up issue problem with my HP Envy Phoenix 810-160 desktop.  1TB HDD and 16GB SSD.  Originally Windows 8 and upgraded with the "free" Windows 10 OS. Returned after a 13 day trip and got the Hard Drive Error (3F0).  UEFI Diagnostics tests all passed multiple times.  After switching BIOS settings back to defaults, error changed to 3F6.  Every time I boot now, I almost immediately get the blue window Hard Drive Error (3F6). I hit F2 and go to Diagnostics.  Skip that by exiting out...computer boots - but very slowly.  Thereafter works perfectly until I shut it down.  Takes a long few minutes to finally shut down (all lights out).  Computer is 30 months old. My 16GB SSD DOES show up in Device Manager but NOT in Explorer.  In Windows 10 Disk Management, the SanDisk 16GB SSD shows up as Disk 2, Unknown, shows little round red icon with a down arrow, 14.9GB, Not Initialized and 14.91GB Unallocated.  I thought this was supposed to be the "fast" boot disk.  I'm afraid to "initialize" this SSD for fear that I might format it and lose what's on it. Can you HELP?  Would you agree that the SSD is not operating as it should?  If it is the "boot disk" how is it that windows starts at all?  Would physically uninstalling the SSD help? Thanks in advance, Bill

Hey there, EXPERTS!  My laptop has the following problem: Envy m7-k211dx Will Not Power On- LED Near AC Plug Blinks 3x When Power Button is Pressed. I've performed hard reset by taking out battery and holding in the power button... no luck. The 3 blinks of the blue led lite occur only when the AC is plugged in, then when the power on button is pressed. This happens regardless of the battery being in or out. When the AC pin is plugged in, there is no action at all on the led light (no blink, not on)... only if the Power On button is pressed... then 3 blinks and nothing further. I have tried holding the power button for over 30 seconds, but nothing after the initial 3 blinks. I've tried using 2 power cords- both have been 19.5v output, with one being 4.62a and the other an iGo Green power supply with the correct "715" tip. Given that the led light does not illuminate when the power is plugged in, I'm assuming that the battery is not being charged. I can't tell if the battery has a charge or not... it is HP part 756478-421(4ICR19/66), 14.8v, 2620mAh, mfg 2014/11 and says replace with HP spare 75643-001. It is a HP VI04. Sorry if TMI... but better too much than little, right? I feel certain that the 3 blinks by the led, only when AC power is plugged in and the power button pressed, is telling something... and I'd be most grateful if one of you folks could give me some guidance.  Mike

I have my brothers laptop and have replaced the screen for him. It may not be relevant but I have also installed an SSD hard drive.I removed the broken screen to get the part number to be able to order a new one. While I was waiting for the new screen to be delivered, I connected a monitor via the HDMI port and installed Windows 10 Pro, anti-virus and anti-malware software along with numerous windows updates. All worked fine and the laptop had been rebooted several times. However, I powered it off, connected the new screen, using the four screws to hold it in place, then powered it on.The power light illuminates for anywhere from 2-4/5 seconds then goes out and that's it! I attempted the "hard reset" prodecure I found posted on the boards, to no avail. I have also disconnected the battery and reconnected it, disconnected the CMOS battery and reconnected it and finally removed and reseated the two memory modules installed. So, I am unable to confirm the new screen definitely works but on the other hand it looks like it could be a motherboard failure just coinciding with the screen being replaced? Is there anything else it could be or I can try? I am confused as the laptop has been running the past two or three days while I have installed new hardware and a new OS.Help!!

Hello,I have a H8-1414 that will not startup right after legacy boot was activated. I have no screen (Blank screen) and no power to the usb ports (This means i cannot even access the bios by memory). I also have had 6 long beeps a couple of times and I changed the video card. I do have the 6 beeps once after the replacement. I reseated the memory blocks as well, disconnected all drives including memory card readers, Hard disk and Cd drives. The unit is only connected with one usb keyboard and the video card (connected via PCI-Express) i have swapped monitors and cables as well. I Also performed a biod reset via the bios reset jumper next to the bios battery with both the battery installed and disconnected. Anyone else had this issue? Please help. Thank you.

A:Envy H8-1414 will no start, no screen and no usb power

Are you seeing a power led lit on the PC? What happens when you press the power button?    Had you considered removing the video card and then powering up the PC?If the video card has failed, you still have  HDgraphics provided by the CPU? Have you seen the no-start troubleshooting document?
