How do I find the password for a Compaq presario PC SR5710Y, that was given to me by someone who does not remember his password.More replies
I recently did a factory setting recovery and when I got it up and upgraded to Vista Home Premiium it downloaded the 1st of the updates using the shutdown method and when I tried to bring it back up it wouldn't come up. Tried several time to do another recovery and couldn't get it to work.
I took the hard drive to a shop and had the c drive reformatted and brought it home and started the System recovery with the factory disks that HP sent me. It took up to 4 hours to run the recovery and after taking the last disk out and clicking on finish it started to restart and then came up with a command prompt and it ran something and then said building partition. That action has now been running for about 24 hours.
Can some one please help me, I'm not computer illiterate but something just doesn't seem right and I can't figure it out.

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
i dont know anything about computers so i will need a detailed explanation and i need to know how to fix it!! it just stays on the compaq screen

Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.
Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get
the Advanced Options.
Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.
So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart
My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide
I decided to see what happened when I ctrl alt delete and then decided to do another recovery. Here's some more info (could not recover errors):

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?
Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.
Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.
Here we go again, guess I am good at getting stuck on stupid, we bought five of these HP 'debranded' machines. I have a M2NBP-VM CSM mobo. I have almost everything working except the audio. Two errors in device manager PCI device and unknown device. I am suspecting that it has to do with audio since I can't get any audio going period. Yepper done the aau high def audio driver thing, chatted with HP support etc etc ran driver issues into the ground. I am using xp pro sp3, I know these things shipped with MCE and they say there vista ready.....hmmm but no xp drivers. So any of ya'all got some advice? thanx

the DVD drive stopped working and now the hard drive has errors.
I got an external USB DVD drive on it, but chkdsk cannot seem to repair the hard drive.
Anyone got any idea how to fix it or recover data off of the hard drive. I got a year's worth of work on it, and none of my files show up. Just "File record segment XXXXX is unreadable" errors about a million of them.
Suggest you stop using the drive until you can recover the data.
It is likely that drive has failed or is going into total failure.
You can purchase a replacement drive for $42 to $75 depending on size and whether you get the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm in a 40, 60, or 80 GB model.
You can obtain an adapter to put the drive into a desktop unit as a slave. The adapter converts the mobile 2.5" hard drive by adapting the pin set for the desktop EIDE cable. Adapters are available many places, including www.geeks.com, www.cyberguys.com, www.frys.com, www.outpost.com, and others... cheaply at $2.45 to $9.99 depending on where you get one.
Then you can usually drag and drop the data from the mobile drive to a desktop drive, or use drive recovery software, then you can burn a CD to then migrate it to your new drive... or just use a USB transfer.
( We work on a great number of the Presario 2500's with identical problems. Did you know there are 434 different models of the Presario 2500 series of laptops?)
With the new drive, you just use the recovery set that came with your laptop, or buy the set for about $30, including shipping, from the Compaq parts department.
But you likely will not ever be able to use that drive again. Thus, you do not want to stress it further by more restart or rescue attempts.
I have this old Compaq and I used to be able to burn CD's until the day I stuck in my little portable device one would use to store pictures and things..I forget what its called, but you can insert it into a USB port then add or remove pics or anything and remove it and put it back around your neck and go. Anyway after doing this one day I go to burn a Cd and my computer is telling me I have these new drives called E,F,G, & H, which it has now bundled into something called a USB mass storage device. it no longer recognizes that i have a working burner.. it does not even recognize that I have a drive D. All it is reading is those removable device drives that came along with my junk drive. The 'Safely Remove Hardware" option has been coming up and ive used it to disable these other drives..but its still not working..How can I fix this?
Right-Click on My Computer, select Manage. In the left pane there should be a listing for Disk Management - click that.
Now, in the right pane, scroll down and see if your CD is listed, but has no drive letter. If so, right click on the grey part and choose "assign letter". I would use Z: (no chance of a USB device trying to grab that letter).
I just bought and set up a new computer system, and am now trying to get my old one to boot, so that I can migrate the files needed for the new system. The monitor doesn't come on, and all I'm getting is a fast blinking green light on the tower. I've un/replugged all cables and power cords, and I know the monitor is OK because it belongs to my husband's matching computer, but my old one won't boot.
I'm desperate, guys! Is there any other information I can give you to help resolve my problem? I have the Easy Transfer Cable for Vista all ready to go (and the software loaded in the old computer before I disconnected it and moved it to the card table), but I can't get my Compaq to boot.
If you can't help me, I guess I'll take it to Best Buy tomorrow and let the Geek Squad have at it...
I'm trying to reformat my mom's old Compaq Presario SR1303WM. I've set it to boot from the cd-rom and I almost had it. But after deleting the partitions and starting a clean install it would only load the programs to 20%. After that it locked up and wouldn't do anything. I had to shut down and restart.
Now, it won't load from anything. Of course the old OS is gone so it won't start up on the hard drive and it won't boot from the cd. It just keeps going to a black screen with "Error Loading Operating System". Can someone please help me. I know they can't get a new computer and I just want to get a new install on this one to speed it up for them. They had a ton of malware and such on it.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Since HP now owns Compaq, I am not sure what kind of cds you have in order to attempt recovery.
Per HP Support
HP computers that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. The use of a separate partition provides a convenient process that eliminates the use of recovery discs that may be lost or scratched. A system recovery from the hard drive may not be possible in some circumstances. Your computer may contain Recovery Disc Creation software. Recovery discs for Windows XP are available from HP for a minimal cost. See Obtaining Recovery Discs for ordering information.Click to expand...
What kind of disk are you using to attempt restore, and are you using HP's support page?
Are you still set to boot from CD and to attempt to do so FIRST?
Is your BIOS properly identifying your hard drive?
What happens if you unplug the data cable from the hd before trying to boot to cd?
Do you have the "Recovery Console" option at some point during boot?
Had to default my laptop now when it starts to load windows
says starting windows setup is preparing computor for first use
welcome message comes up then says windows could not complete installation,.to complete restart the installation
i press ok and goes over again starting windows
What's the part/product number(P/N) on that Compaq Presario laptop?
You appear to have a CQ61 series model, so we need to confirm which one you have.
There should be a dash and additional characters after CQ61.
I have a compaq presario. The bios are poop. Does anyone know if there is a way to update the bios with areal manufacturer? Or am I stuck with compaq's bios? It would be really nice if there was a way to find out who makes the bios for them and update it. Any info would be great. Thank you in advance!
You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.
When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.
Like working on a NEW Dell PC, almost NO Options, no Temp monitors nothing.. junk... its a DELL!
My friend has a Compaq Presario 5340, which I might say is being a real pain! She dropped it off to me yesterday to try to fix.
Here is my problem(s): The computer starts up fine until it gets to the Windows98 screen then it hangs. She had stated it was running slow then this problem has surfaced. I have been in the MSconfig and did a selective startup bypassing the Autoexec and config files, as stated by troubleshooters in Win98. I also have used the quick restore cd's that she has and the same thing still happens, it hangs on Win98 screen.
Does anyone have any suggestions or more troubleshooting to do before I boot it out the door? Also have thought about formatting the hard drive to wipe everything out, but I have heard it is difficult to reload programs on Compaq's. I don't have any idea if she has added any new software or hardware to this computer.
Check the CPU settings in the bios and make sure that the CPU is not running overclocked.
If this is one of those 599lmr motherboard Compaqs, it'll do just what your saying if the CPU is set wrong.
I have a compaq Persario M2000. The other day, I was using the touch pad to move and it just shut off. I tried to turn it back on and nothing happens. When I look at the AC adaprter led it is not turned on and it is plugged in. I removed the battery and tried the same with no luck. the ac adapter led is still not light up. The battery is fully charged, and when i try just that nothing happens. I opened it up and removed the bios battery and checked the chips and circuits. nothing seems out of place ot burnt. I used a multi meter to check the power button and it is getting power, as well as the curcuits in the ac adapter
can someone help me or give me some ideas what my nxt step is?
I had similar problems with compaq laptops - it's the power supply in your laptop - the repair for that is about $300+
check your warranty before doing anything else...
I've searched this site, I've asked HP/Compaq, and I've checked search engines but still don't have an answer, so wondering if I can find it here.
I have a Compaq Presario 700 with what I believe is a dead hard drive. I want to replace it, but not sure if it is necessary to copy the files from the drive first. I don't think it's possible, as the drive doesn't seem to work at all. Can I replace it with a new (upgraded) hard drive and just run the original Windows QuickRestore discs, or is there something more to it that I would need?
Here's what happens: I switch the laptop on and it wants to start up, but then, before Windows is running, the hard drive begins it's lovely scraping and clunking noises and I eventually get a black screen with plain text saying windows had to shut down... and is beginning dump of physical memory. Of course, this all started after some fool (maybe me, maybe not) dropped the laptop.
Every site I've checked says I'll need to create a backup of all files before replacing the hard drive. I didn't have anything on there that I need to save, so am wondering if I can just run the QuickRestore and get back to business as usual.
Welcome to the TSG forum.
Which Compaq Laptop ???
Have you backed up all your personal Data ??
Yes .. just put in a new HD .. and run the recovery CD/DVDs
This'll put it back to the way you bought it .. assuming no other problems.
yeah, it's ancient, but i'm just getting it up and running to sell it. i got it from a friend. ok, my question is- why is the cpu fan missing? and why don't i see a set of pins on the motherboard for the fan?
i thought all cpu's needed a fan, so where's the power supply for it? (the cpu is a pentium 120mhz)
Hi, Kerri Ann!
Not necessarily. A 120MHz may not need a fan on the CPU. It will more likely have a large heatsink, and an exhaust fan at the back.
Original 500GB HDD was showing signs of eminent failure.I successfully cloned the drive to a new 400GB HDD, using NORTON GHOST.(I know this drive is smaller than the original, but less than 30GB was being used on the original)Anyway, The new drive would not boot.Assuming that the problem may be OS license-related, I ordered the Compaq Recovery Discs Set.While waiting for the Recovery Disc Set to arrive, I purchased a Sandisk 120GB SSD.(Again, I know that the 120GB SSD is smaller than the original 500GB HDD that came with the computer, but I do not plan to even fill it 50%.)Anyway, The Recovery Disc Set arrived and I attemted to use it on the new Sandisk 120GB SSD.The process seemed to go fine, all 3 discs of the set seemed to copy, and then the computer restarts and a screen displaying files flying across the screen from one folder to another stays there forever.I waited 15 hours and came back and I still just see:Files flying across the screen, from one folder to another folder. The drive activity light is blinking, but obviously there is a problem. Some possible related facts/information:The SSD is detected in the BIOS.The SSD Checks good, by the BIOS Diagnostics "Smart" Tests.I cannot find anywhere in the BIOS to disable AHCI, it only shows SATA or IDE.Current Bios version is 5.5.5, and I have been unable to find a BIOS Update anywhere.Current Memory (RAM) is 4GB (2x2GB), which was an upgrade since the machine was originally purchased. Not too sure what you need help with.
Do you mean the sound does not work since upgrading to Windows 7?
This is because the existing audio driver is not compatible with Windows 7, and unfortunately HP/Compaq do not have any Windows 7 drivers for the Presario V3417LA. The Windows Vista driver might work. You can download it from here:
Click the 'plus' symbol next to "Driver - Audio", then click "Connexant high-defintion audio driver".
If this driver does not work you will have to use Google Search to try and find one that does.
You really should have checked what drivers were available from the Compaq website before upgrading to Windows 7.
Some older laptops are just not suitable for upgrading to Windows 7 because of possible driver issues.
A mate of mine has just bought himself a Compaq Presario and asked me to give him a hand at getting it up & running so I said I would, (really a classic case of the blind leading the blind). We did get the thing going & connected to ISP so miracles do happen. What I would like to know more about is the partitioned HD that it has. Am I right in thinking it is a backup of some sort.

Related to the problem that I posted about here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic141683.html, this is a little more urgent. The Compaq will frequently, sometimes regularly lock up: screen freezes, neither mousepad nor keyboard respond, and the harddisk parks the heads. Lately, it locks up when it's on the charger, and then is fine (at least, so it seems) when on battery-power. It's also sensitive to being touched--not bumped, it's that unpredictable. Sometimes, I can move it around without problem, other times, if I even touch it, it freezes.
The fans still run like normal, so I don't think that it's overheating. I'm afraid it's a motherboard issue, which I wouldn't be surprised at, considering that it's about 6 years old.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
hello recently my pc has been failing to start up and asking to go to the start up repair my pc is fine but will this lead to future problems
Hi and Welcome to TSF!
What did startup repair find?
Do you have your Windows cd?
hello my laptop started melting charger tips from my sister used an universal charger since it wuz hers then. I checked the universal charger specs and it was not compatible with computer. The charger for my laptop is working perfectly bt when ever charging the tip gets extremely hot untill it starts to melt. I have recently changed the charging port on the motherboard but the laptop is still heating the charger tip. The system is compaq presario v2000 currently running on xp pro. i dnt want to purchase a new motherboard any suggestions on what needs to be changed.
My brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.
This is what it says....
First, if your Presario Notebook is attached to a Port Replicator (QuikDock), you must turn the power to the computer off, disconnect it from the QuikDock, and plug it into an external power socket. Disconnect any printer cables or other peripherals from the computer before using Quick Restore.
1. Insert the Quick Restore CD (bootable disk) in the CD drive, and press Enter. A WARNING message appears advising that you are attempting to totally reformat your hard drive. Confirm by following the next step.
2. Press 1 and then Enter to continue. The Power Quest Quick Restore Wizard starts copying and uncompressing data to the local hard drive. This process takes approximately 7-10 minutes.
This warning message never appears and none of this ever happens. Does anyone know why... Read more
Is there an autorun.exe? Setup.exe? Any executable at all on the root of the disk?
We have a very old Presario 4550, connected to an old cathode tube display and we also can't find a functional printer with old fashioned connectors. There are two USB ports on the back of the tower - could we connect a more modern display and printer to this tower using the USB ports?More replies
My landlady's Compaq Presario SR1103WM is acting up and I'm pretty certain it is the PSU going out because the symptoms are the same as my PC had when it's PSU went belly up on me. It starts booting up fine until Windows XP Home starts loading, than it resets. I used a WinXP disk to repair the boot files and MBR with no effect, so we decided to reinstall Windows (been needing to do that anyway). Before doing that though, I was going to try recovering pictures of her grandkids by using a Linux Live CD, and ran into the same problem with it, so that eliminated Windows problems.
To the best of my knowledge, that leaves the PSU (likely) or the memory (possible) as the probable causes. I running Memtest86+ on it tonight to eliminate that cause.
Please correct me if I'm wrong in my diagnosis or if I am missing anything, but if I'm right about the PSU, that brings me to my main problem. I have heard that many Compaq models have proprietary PSUs so that you can't use off-the-shelf parts to replace them and have to buy one from them at a higher price. Is that the case with this model or can I order one from Newegg? I looked up the PC on Compaq's web site, and it didn't even say what PSU it has.
Thank you in advance.
Memtest86+ has compleated 34 cycles with zero errors. Looks like it is the PSU.
I have this older Compaq Presario 7470 CPU, and I can't figure out how to open it. It doesn't have any buttons that pop open the chassis, or at least any that I can easily spot. I got a memory upgrade for it, and would like to put it in. Anyone know how to pop this thing open? Please email me or just reply here. Thanks!
Here's a link to their site with instructions.
I have a problem with my laptop screen. The screen is dark, however, the data is still there. Can't turn lamp on, or change anything, but can hook up to a monitor and it works. Can I fix the screen to work again? If I hit the button that turns the screen off and closes the computer down, the picture pops up for a few seconds and it is slightly red.
Its most likely that the backlight has failed. It can be fixes but it costs a upwards of $100 to do by a professional. You could try buying the parts online and doing it yourself though if you are technically inclined.
Here's how: http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2007/12/09/replace-laptop-backlight-ccfl-lamp/
I really don't know that much about computer but i have a compaq presario v6000 and i just brought a new hard disk drive ST9100824AS and i trying to put on windows 7 and its saying no IDE found when i run diagnosis test. When i go to run the windows 7 disk i get to the installing screen and its doesn't find hdd. I need some help. Thanks
I have the best luck with computers ever. My brother wanted me to format his oldschool compaq presario 5000 computer so I formatted with the win XP setup disk, when I went to restart to start installing windows after the format it takes me to a blank screen that reads:
"Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)"
I have booted with floppy and fdisk, fdisk /mbr, formatted about a million times using FAT and NTFS file systems, I have deleted all partitions, did everythinig I can think of.
Does anyone have any idea of how I might solve this and install windows? I know the HDD isn't shot because I can put it in my other comp and actually do a full win install, but when I place it back in the compaq, it brings me to the same error screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
one more thing, I am kinda a n00b at this sorta stuff so any ideas please give me the *hold my hand* explination and guide me what to do with step by step instructions, thanks again guys!
Check in your BIOS and make sure you have the right HDD displayed. It would be best to set it to auto. Also you could try setting the BIOS back to the default values.3 more replies
I have a Compaq Presario 7588
serial number: 8011dcw41090
With Pentium III 550Mhz processor I hear that I can up grade the processor to 1100 Mhz but I still need some information a bout the processor like the type of socket and the cache memory and if I can just buy a processor and install it normally without contacting Compaq service
You'd probably need a Socket 370. I don't think the Tualatin based P3's would work for you. They are the ones with 512k L2 cache. You'd need a regular Coppermine based P3. (256k L2)
I have a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop that won't come out of hibernation. With either the battery or A/C cable the power on light on the keyboard will come on after the power switch is pressed and a couple of seconds of clicks from the vicinity of the 3 1/2 floppy or the hard drive area but nothing else - no beeps or anything on the screen.
I talked to Tech support (I am out of warranty) and tried their suggestions - removing all power and pressing the power button and then reinserting the battery; turning it off, removing power for 24 hours and then turning it back on.
One suggestion I had from another source was to remove the CMOS battery but I can not figure out how to access that part of the case. I can get to the hard drive but not the battery.
Any suggestions or directions on removing the CMOS battery?

I have an Compaq Presario 5724 that I FDisked and reloaded Win98 SE on. There are some components that are not working and I need drivers for. I have been to the Compaq site, but they have 2 or 3 different drivers for all the interfaces.
How can I find out which video, sound, modem are in the thing? Or, do I have to download all of the listed drivers and try them one at a time?

I need help I have a Compaq Presario R4010US Laptop. The keyboard does not work for some reason, I plugged an external usb keyboard into it and it works fine. Could the ribbon cable that goes from the keybd to the motherbd be bad?
hi Fwilli2 welcome to TSF,
take the keyboard off and re-seat the ribbon cable. you might want to try uninstalling the keyboard from device manager and then restart computer see if it work before you take keyboard out.
I need to replace HD in my Compaq but I can't seem to get the plastic cover off front without forcing it. I am afraid I will break it. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your time.
Well you didn't say it so I will ask. Are you sure the front cover has to come off. Most cases you just remove the screws on the back, remove the back metal shroud, and access the machine from there. A few cases have the front covers come off but the majority don't.
i have a compaq presario SR5210NX with windows vista home premium ,it has a problem in/windows/system32/ntkrnlpa.exe,the state is 0xc0000225 and the information says the kernel doesnt responde or isnt working .it says introduce the installation disk windows ,but i dont have it and i couldnt enter to the recovery systemMore replies
I have a compaq presario c300 notbook. It will not boot. I get the compaq screen, then nothing. It will not boot to the cd either. The backlight comes on, so it's not that. Please help. I'm lost.
Welcome to TSF....
To get it to boot from the cd you have to change the boot order in BIOS. This can be done during boot up when you can open the BIOS and set it.
The cd you used is it the recovery cd for the computer?
Hope i am not in the wrong place ... so here gos
My Compaq Presario 2100 laptop got knocked off the table and broke the screen ,, its a 15 inch from corner to corner ,, will any other compaq models work on this Compaq Presario 2100?
Thanks in advance
Maybe, maybe not. You'll need to check the SPECIFIC laptop replacement screen you're considering and see if it's a match.
I bought a presario 1500 that I had assumed had a problem with green lines that were on the lcd and external monitor. The lady who owned it had taken it apart and sold it to me that way. I bought it today and tested it when I got home. I powered it on and I saw that the fan will move slightly but won't start and the hard drive will start but shuts down after about 5-10 seconds. The power light always stays on but nothing else. I noticed when I unplug the hard drive and battery inverter board(see link) it will shut off the power light. Could that be the problem? I don't see how the motherboard could break when it was never used. Anyone have some advise?
This looks like a power supply controller card issue. Also some systems will not run if the CPU fan is not working. You need the battery inverter board in place to power the system and light the light.
Appreciate some assistance.
Anyone know how much memory the Compaq Presario EZ 2605 (out of the box) had?

ok the dilemma is simple ok i bought this new laptop for the wife then it came with a built in webcam truth is i don't want that webcam so i bought another webcam that i am trying to use on msn but the laptop states found new hardware but doesn't install my webcam is usb ported it says m style on the cam the only thing it uses my wife states that she can access the cam thru the control panel but not in msn why is this occuring if someone could get to me asap would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance
You may need to disable the original webcam
You can disable it by going to: Device Manager (Start->Run-> Devmgmt.msc)
Then locating your Webcam (that you don't want to use) and then right click on it and select disable
Then go back to MSN and use the settings to set up the new webcam
Hello - I am attempting to get an old Compaq Presario 9546 that I obtained work correctly. I am, however, at a loss to figure out what the heck is wrong. When you boot the computer, it does the RAM check, and appears to skip past all BIOS functions (I can't go into BIOS setup... it does not exist) and then all it says is "Non system disk, please replace and press any key" - which, BTW, I have no disk in at all. When I DO put in a system floppy, it will boot from the floppy but not aqnowledge that anything else but the floppy is hooked up to the computer (I have 2 hard drives and a CD rom drive - all with the correct jumper settings). Any ideas? If I could just get BIOS to come up, I could probably fix it myself...

i just did a fresh install on this compaq laptop w/ win2k pro and i lost several of the add on thingys that compaq added to the laptop.
ie. the volume and scroll options on the keyboard. i went to the compaq site and haven't found the documentation on what the name of the programs or drivers are called for these 2 options.
any help would be nice.
You should have gotten a Restore CD with your laptop. That is the OS and all specific drivers, apps and Compaq features that were on the system. Anytime you install a "fresh" OS, you will lose all that stuff. With Compaq, I think this is not all bad. If you bought the laptop with something other that Win2K, then you are most likely SOL and on your own.
I am trying to install a Cyberdrive x16x12x40 CD-RW into a Compaq Presario 5000 series PC. If no other device is attached to either the IDE or to the power supply, and if the CD-RW isn't attached to the IDE then power will get to the CD-RW. If the CD-RW is attached to the IDE and/or any other device is attached then no power goes to the CD-RW.
Can anyone shed any light on why this is and how I can fix it.

I have a compaq presario and that is in serious need of a new processer. The one I currently have is a cyrix M II-366 at 250mhz. I origenally had plans to overclock it but I feel it would be best to leave it be and buy a new processer. what I wanted to know is would I have to buy a new motherboard inorder to upgrade it to 1gig? By the way, you would'nt happen to know why it says 366 and runs at 250. All your help is greatly appreciated.
Look in your manual. Compaq has the upgrade path documented very well in it. I really doubt your FSB is at 250MHz tho
